Videos show terrifying moment bull elephant lifts safari truck

The safari guide who warded off the elephant was praised by wildlife experts.

Frightened tourists can be seen ducking between seats during a tense standoff between a bull elephant and a safari truck in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Videos of Monday’s incident show a bull elephant lifting the 22-seat truck up several times with his trunk before letting it drop. The driver can be heard calling for the elephant to "go away" and slapping his hand against the side of the truck to scare away the animal.

Hendry Blom, a bystander who caught the incident on camera, told ABC News: "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."

Another video from inside the truck shows frightened tourists cowering on the floor of the vehicle. One woman can be heard praying as the elephant approaches.

Poncho Mogodiri, field operations manager of Mankwe Game Trackers, the tour company involved in the incident, told ABC News the guide and guests were in animal hide when the bull elephant approached. "Hides provide you with the rare opportunity to unobtrusively view the wildlife and birds at close quarters," according to Pilanesberg National Park.

Mogodiri said some of the tourists "came too close to the elephant to take pictures and he started getting aggressive."

The guide's actions -- revving the engine, slamming car doors and shouting to ward the elephant away -- have been widely praised by wildlife experts. Mogodiri said the guide reacted "by the book."

"Anyone that’s worked with elephants will tell you when a bull like that charges, you don’t turn and run, you need to make as much noise and stand your ground," said Ron Magill, communications director at Zoo Miami.

Mogodiri confirmed the bull was in musth, or when an elephant "experiences an increase in reproductive hormones and becomes highly aggressive," according to the Pilanesberg National Park website.

No one was injured in the incident, though Mankwe Game Trackers told ABC News one family had been offered counseling after being left "extremely rattled." The Pilanesberg National Park said it will be conducting an internal investigation of the incident.

An elderly US tourist was killed and four others hurt when an aggressive bull elephant charged and toppled their safari vehicle during a game drive in Zambia .

The attack at Kafue national park, in which the large pachyderm ran from a wooded area and barreled into the side of the truck, was captured on video and posted to social media by ABC News. It identified the tourist as 79-year-old Gail Mattson of Minnesota.

Keith Vincent, executive director of the safari operator Wilderness, told the network in a statement that the elephant’s charge was unexpected, and the driver had no opportunity to escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he said .

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident.”

Wildlife officials and local police say they are investigating Saturday’s incident, which took place in the national park about 220 miles north-west of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. Covering almost 8,700 square miles, Kafue is the country’s oldest and largest national park, and is popular with tourists for its abundance and variety of birds and animals.

Wilderness said four other guests in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Family members of Mattson, who also had a home in Arizona, told Minnesota’s KSTP News that she was “living life” on the game-watching holiday. Photographs of her in a safari truck clutching a flower, taken on the day of her death, accompanied the network’s report.

John Longabauth, a friend from Arizona, told the outlet he would miss her adventurous spirit. “She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” he said. “Because her birthday is in the summer, she was going to be 80, she felt like she would start slowing down.”

Zambia’s neighbor Zimbabwe has expressed recent concern at a growing conflict between humans and elephants from a rising elephant population, especially one that is migrating more as the climate crisis disrupts animals’ access to food, water and cover, in Africa and around the world.

When it comes to arguing about the best off-road truck there are a lot of contenders. In my mind, however, there’s no real competition for the title. The customized safari rigs—based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79—that professional guides in Africa use for their clients have a set of features and capabilities that no other vehicle duplicates.

Qualities of the Best Off-Road Truck

What earns these rigs the top spot? For starters, they actually spend the majority of their time off-road. These are not pampered garage queens or casual weekend rock-crawlers. On a daily basis, these trucks have to tackle mud, hills, rocks, sand, water and brush that is thicker, thornier, and nastier than anything we see in North America. And what other vehicle needs to be able to hightail it across the veld with an angry elephant in pursuit?

Everything on these trucks is hardened for tough use and survivability. But unlike pure off-road vehicles like UTVs and other four-wheelers, they are road capable. The guides who rely on them road trip from one part of Africa to the next for work, so the trucks can handle long hours on pavement.

I’ve spent many hours and days riding in safari trucks over the years. Not only can they crawl across axle-breaking ground, but can do it with a Cape buffalo loaded in the back. And should you want to take a break and enjoy a luxurious meal, they do that too. About the only thing you can knock them for is not being used in the snow and cold. That’s a valid point. But even so, they’re still the best off-road truck.

Best Off-Road Truck Features

My friend Rob Lurie, a hunting guide from Zimbabwe, owns the truck pictured above. He’s been in the safari industry for more that 25 years and has worked the kinks out of his builds. He goes through a truck every five years or so and at this point is making only small modifications to his design.

Base truck : Toyota Land Cruiser 79 single-cab pickup. “This is the landmark safari vehicle of Africa,” Lurie says. “It can carry about 1.5 tons of load and has 4-wheel drive with differential locks on the front and the back. It comes with modern features like power steering and air conditioning but is still pretty simple.”
Motor and Transmission: “Mine’s a 4.5-liter V-8 diesel with a single turbo charger and 5-speed manual transmission. It’s the same engine that’s in the 200-series Land Cruiser, which is similar to the Sequoia that you have the in States and that has the twin turbos. The 4.2-liter straight six diesel is more common in Africa, but I like the V-8.”
Fuel : Dual 90-liter tanks for 180 liters of diesel, which translates to 47.5 gallons of fuel. In stock configuration, the truck gets about 19 mpg. With the mods and extra weight, expect that to drop significantly, but even at 16 mpg this safari rig will have a cruising range of more than 700 miles. For perspective, if you started driving the truck from New York City, you could probably get to Indianapolis before stopping for gas.
Base cost: $70,000. “It is built in South Africa but we pay a 65 percent duty tax to the government to import the vehicle, so that’s what really pumps the price up high.”

Add-Ons and Modifications

Front bumper. Gets replaced with a heavy-duty brush bar that incorporates LED lights and a 12,000-pound Warne winch. “Driving through the bush you have to worry about stumps and animals and the winch is useful in a lot of areas for getting us out of the mud and sand and gullies,” Lurie says.
Mesh seed catcher. “That stops the grass seeds from going into the radiators. It’s pretty important early in the year and when it rains a lot and the grass is high,” he says.
Rear bumper. “We replace it with a heavy-duty bumper that we can use our hi-lift jacks on to jack up the vehicle when we either get stuck or have flat tires,” he says. “Also it is a stepping bar for guys to get in and out of the truck.”
Tires. “I hunt with standard 7.50R16 14-ply tires as we’re in a lot of gravel, sharp stones, and rocks,” he says. “I find the wider, nicer-looking off-road tires get damaged a lot more so I hunt with standard-width tires that are narrower but much tougher.”
Air compressor.
Suspension. “With the extra weight we put on the vehicle we have to upgrade the suspension. I put EFS heavy-duty leaf springs on the back and heavy-duty coil springs up front with heavy-duty shocks all around,” he says. “I also have greaseable shackles for the spring hangers on back and every year I change out the shackle and spring bushings. They take a lot of flack from the dust and move around a lot.”
Hunting platform. “There are a whole lot of different designs. Mine has a gun rack that holds three guns and a hunting seat behind the cab that can seat three people and is removable for when we’re loading big animals. It also has brackets on either side to hold two spare wheels and keep them out of the way,” Lurie says. “There’s also a roof rack with a basket above the cab that can hold jackets, cameras, and other bits and pieces.”
Side steps. Two sets of rungs on either side to help hunters climb in and out of the truck.
Rhino lining. Protects the steel work in the back tray of the vehicle from blood, salt, scratches, and rust.
Hunting box. “It has axes, ropes, pulleys, spare tubes for the tires, repair kits, my tool kit, shovels and a pick—just a whole plethora of stuff,” Lurie says.
Fridge/Freezer. “I have an Engel 40-liter (10 gallon) fridge/freezer that runs off the 12-volt and keeps our drinks and anything else cold all day. Especially useful in summer when temperatures hit 110 degrees and you go for a walk and come back to a nice cold drink,” Lurie says.
Safari chairs.
Lunch kit. “I have a tea-box with all my equipment for coffee and tea and a lunch box where I keep the bits and pieces for grilling meat in the field, plates and knives and forks and spices,” he says.
Lights. “I added a light bar up front and replaced the cab light with an LED strip that’s much brighter and have some portable lights in case we need to skin out an animal in the dark or if we get stuck in the field,” he says.

Ultimate Overlander

There you have it, the makings of the best off-road truck on earth. All-in, this configuration will tack another $10,000 on top of the $70,000 base price. That’s a lot of cheddar, but the most painful part isn’t the price tag but rather that the truck isn’t available in the United States since it lacks air bags and other touches our government insists upon.

I’ve hunted Africa many times over the decades and can guarantee that whenever someone goes on their first hunt, two things will happen. One, that person will start planning their second trip before they leave. And, two, they will want a safari truck of their own. Even after all this time I still crave one. Maybe someday we’ll be able to have the best off-road truck that any of us who have ever been to Africa dream about.

'Aggressive' Bull Elephant Charges and Lifts Safari Truck Blocking His Path in Shocking Footage

Tourists on a safari in South Africa had a wild and unexpected animal encounter.

According to the Associated Press, a group of tourists were on a safari trip through Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa on March 20 when they encountered a pushy bull elephant.

The animal was unhappy with the vehicle's proximity. In response to the truck's presence, the wild animal charged toward the vehicle and tossed it several times, per the AP, almost piercing the truck with its tusks.

Footage from the incident shared on TikTok by @hendryblom shows the animal walking at the truck and then lifting it with his trunk while the driver of the vehicle yells at the enormous creature. In the video, the elephant drops the truck on the ground, backs away, then approaches the vehicle again and picks it up. After the elephant drops the safari truck for a second time in the clip, the vehicle reverses out of the animal's path.

"We might win next time at 2 truths and a lie," the TikTok user captioned the clip. The poster, named Hendry Blom, told ABC News that those who witnessed the clash "were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck."

The shocking footage has received over 65.3 million views. A second video posted by @hendryblom shows the same incident from inside the safari vehicle.

According to the AP, the driver and passengers were not injured during their encounter with the elephant but were frightened by the interaction.

Elephant attack leaves American woman dead in Zambia's Kafue National Park

Johannesburg — An elephant attack that left an American woman dead in Zambia was captured in harrowing cellphone video over the weekend. The clip, shot by tourists in Zambia's Kafue National Park, begins inside an open safari vehicle during a game drive.

In the distance, a large bull elephant can be seen coming toward the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen in the video clip, but someone is heard, saying: "Oh my goodness," before a man says, "it's coming fast."

The vehicle stops and then another voice, presumably the game ranger, tries to ward off the elephant verbally as the large pachyderm hooks its tusks onto the vehicle and rolls it several times.

Family members confirmed that Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old Minnesotan, was killed in the attack. In the post on Facebook, Rona Wells said her mother had died in "a tragic accident while on her dream adventure."

Mattson, a retired loan officer, was 11 days into a month-long vacation overseas, her family told WCCO, describing her as "adventurous" and "loved by everybody."

Wilderness Safaris, which operates the tour in the Zambian park, said in a statement that it was cooperating with national authorities to investigate the incident and it offered condolences to Mattson's family.

Wilderness said the other tourists traveling with Mattson were also Americans, four of whom sustained minor injuries in the attack.

"Our guides are extremely well trained, but sadly the terrain and vegetation was such that the route became blocked," the company said, explaining that the ranger "could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough."

Mattson was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa after the incident but succumbed to her injuries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest national park at 8,650 square miles. It's a popular tourist destination as it's home to five of sub-Saharan Africa's iconic big animal species, lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffalo.

So you’re going on a safari to see the open plains and incredible wildlife of Africa? One of the most important details to check, before booking your trip, is what types of African safari vehicles, overlanding trucks, and other forms of transportation are used.

The range of safari vehicles is enormous. From walking safaris with enclosed transfer vehicles to pop-top 4X4 safari vehicles, and from 4-seater to 44-seater overland trucks. You can go bare-bones or air-conditioned high-luxury, local dugout mokoro, horseback, or air safaris for a bird's eye view. The important thing is to choose the type of African safari vehicle or overlanding truck, and other means of exploring (or combination) that suits you, for the ultimate African safari experience.

1. Africa Overlanding Vehicles (Overland Trucks)

These expedition trucks are specially built to deal with the rough roads of Africa, where potholes, deep ruts, and river crossings are pretty ‘every day.’ They are normally used for longer and larger (12 to 44 people) overland Africa tours, so need to be able to carry a fair amount of equipment while still offering the budget traveller a relatively comfortable trip and good views of the passing scenery and wildlife.

African tour operators choose the best overland truck for each trip, according to the area being visited and the anticipated terrain that will be covered.

Overland Vehicle Seating Arrangements

Overland trucks may differ in their seating formation and size. Some have all forward-facing seats, while others may have some backward- or side-facing seats. The seats are generally raised, allowing for good views over the African landscapes, especially in grassy areas, where you want to be able to spot animals in the grass. Ask your tour operator about seating formation and how many are seated in a row – some overland trucks seat up to three per row, which makes seeing out a bit more difficult if you’re in the middle – before booking your overland tour.

Windows, Pop-up Roofs, and Taking Photos on Overland Trucks

The overland trucks generally have large windows, some of which open vertically, others horizontally – allowing for good views. Many of them also have a pop-up roof. This allows you to stand up and get 360-degree views and photos.

Luggage Space on Overlanding Trucks

All overland trucks are equipped with storage space (some lockable) for luggage and equipment – some under the seating section, others at the back of the truck, and some with a detachable trailer. Obviously, space is at a premium, so be sure to pack only the absolute essentials. Also, when packing, use soft luggage rather than hard (e.g. Samsonite), as it is much easier to fit into lockers and overhead compartments.

Most overland trucks have a safe onboard for the storage of valuables.

Mobile Kitchen & Diner

Many meals while on safari are prepared and eaten out in the bush, far from civilization. The overland trucks are fully equipped for this. Most safari trucks have a ‘kitchen’ section (often fold-out, beneath the seating area) with a stove and hand dish-washing area. They also have a fridge/freezer/cooler boxes to keep supplies and drinks fresh in the African heat. Africa Overland Tours are thirsty work!

Safety First on Safari!

Safety is non-negotiable. Check with your tour operator that there is a fully-stocked First Aid kit onboard, safety belts on all seats, and some means of communication (radio, etc.), in case of emergencies while on safari. All legitimate tour operators have their client’s safety first in mind and ensure that their overland trucks are kept in a good condition and are reliable for long trips – larger fuel and water tanks, spare tyres, knowledgeable and well-trained drivers, etc.

Modern overlanding trucks come fully equipped with the modern gadgets that we've all got used to. With iPod/MP3 points, you can listen to your own soundtrack as you watch the African landscape slide by. Some smaller tours use smaller overland trucks – seven to nine-seaters – which provide window seats only, so nobody has to be in a middle seat.

These are state-of-the-art 4x4 overland vehicles used on small-group overland tours. A custom-built luxury overland truck comfortably accommodates up to 12 guests. They are specially designed to provide extra space and amenities. 2. Minibus or Microbus Safari Vehicles

For smaller safari groups and shorter tours that don’t go through hugely rugged areas, adapted microbuses (or minibuses) are used. As safari vehicles, Toyota Quantums and Mercedes Sprinters are most commonly used. The optimal number in most of these safari vehicles is six to ten people, forward-facing.

When booking a safari, find out from the tour operator which safari vehicle is used, and how many window seats there are, to ensure that everybody gets a window seat and has a good view of the spectacular scenery and amazing animals of Africa.

These safari microbuses are specially adapted for safari travel and are generally equipped with GPS tracking, sliding windows, cooler boxes, fire extinguishers, and First Aid kits. They generally have a softer suspension than other safari vehicles, giving a slightly more comfortable trip. Many of them – especially on Kenya Safaris – also feature pop-up tops, allowing travellers to stand and view/photograph the countryside and animals from the minibus.

Some minibuses are fitted with air-conditioning. This is a welcome relief from the sweltering African heat but may detract from the whole experience of Africa, as the windows will be closed, blocking out the sounds of the bush.

3. Land Cruising Safari Vehicles

Land Cruisers and Land Rovers are used on many safari tours. They range from ‘bare-bones’ models i.e. no added ‘mod-cons’, to highly specialized vehicles that may include air-conditioning, MP3 players, and slightly tinted windows for protection from the sun. Some of the newer safari vehicle models also have pop-up roofs, for added viewing potential, especially in Tanzania.

Safari Vehicle Seating Arrangements

These safari vehicles, in general, can carry four to six (extended version) passengers, all forward-facing. Check the seating configuration with your tour operator before booking. While extended safari vehicles can carry more people, they tend to be slightly more difficult to handle on the road. Most of the Land Cruisers are 4X4s, allowing travel over the rough terrain that Africa is known for… Have a look at images of the road into the Ngorongoro Crater if you want an idea!

While self-hire safari vehicle options are available, tour operators all have experienced drivers who, more often than not have extensive knowledge not only of handling the rough terrain but of the areas through which we travel.

Most Land Cruisers are equipped with all possible safety features – fire extinguishers, First Aid kits, seat belts and many have airbags. They have specially designed fuel tanks to allow the economical use of diesel during long journeys and snorkels for travel through rivers.

In general, luggage is taken either in a trailer or packed on the roof, to keep the safari vehicle as uncluttered as possible inside, for your comfort. Remember to pack lightly!

4. Open Game-Viewing Safari Vehicles

Within many of the game parks, smaller, open-sided, or completely open safari vehicles are used for game drives. While these are not suitable for long distances – wind, dust, sun, and Africa’s elements can be harsh! – they are great for game drives as they allow you to get up close and personal with the sights, sounds, and smells of the African bush.

These safari vehicles are most often adapted Land Cruisers which seat between six and nine passengers. Some are designed with tiered seating so that nobody’s view is blocked by the person in front of them’s head!

Protection from The Elements

Due to their being open to the elements, it is vital to protect yourself against the African sun. Hats, scarves, and windbreakers are all excellent shields from fiery hot UV rays. 5. Bird’s-Eye View Flying Safaris

‘Air safaris’ are offered at various places in Africa, like Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta . A flight over the delta in a small plane gives you an idea of the vastness of the area. A helicopter flight over Victoria Falls will make you feel like an eagle soaring above this spectacular area!

7. Boat to the Great White Sharks

The custom-built shark cage diving boat is typically a 46-foot (14m) long catamaran with a spacious upper deck for surface views of the sharks and other marine animals and platforms for the bait and decoy handlers to ensure the best possible shark viewing. Safety is of utmost importance and there are life vests for all passengers, fire extinguishers, a life raft, and capsize bottles on the boat. In case of medical emergencies, there are two onboard First Aid kits, oxygen cylinders, and fluid replacement.

Not only is your safety cared for, but that of the sharks too. The cage has no sharp points or edges that could hurt the animals. The cage itself is specially constructed of reinforced steel and can take five people comfortably. It is lowered and winched back up using a winch from a sturdy gantry. Oxygen is supplied from the boat to divers via a ‘hookah’ system with hoses running into the cage.

One of the best ways to watch wildlife and birds on safari in Africa is without a doubt by boat. It's hard to compete with a laid-back sunset cruise. 11. Winding Through the Waterways in Mekoro

If your safari includes a trip into the Okavango Delta , you will more-than-likely experience the gentle pleasure of a trip in a mokoro canoe. Mokoro History

These traditional dug-out canoes are made of wood and guided by a ‘poler’, who stands at the helm. 14. Walking Safaris in Africa

This is (obviously) only an option once you are in the game reserve. Depending on the safety i.e. the presence of dangerous predators, many game reserves offer guided walking tours. This is the ideal way to get a true, African, wildlife experience. By walking through the bush all your senses experience Africa – sight, smell, sounds, touch – unadulterated by the sound of motors and really off the beaten track.

Watch terrifying moment bull elephant charges safari truck in South Africa forcing students to run for their lives

Three terrified eco-students had a lucky escape when their safari truck was attacked by a bull elephant and rammed off the road.

The huge six ton, 13-foot tall tusker, which was in season for mating, became enraged when the two vehicles came close to its breeding herd.

The confrontation happened after both trucks came to a stop behind each other on a dirt road on the Selati Game Reserve near Hoedspruit on the edge of Kruger Park in South Africa .

Incredible videos show the bull elephant–with ears flaring suddenly charging at the visitors.

The giant bull then flattens its ears and charges, ramming its tusks into the vehicle.

The guide on the viewing seat, in front of the bonnet, jumps for his life to avoid the elephant’s tusks.

Its tusks slice through the bodywork of the safari truck and it lifts the 11-seater vehicle off the ground, pushing it off the road.

Screams can be heard from the three students on board throughout the 30-second attack.

Fortunately just as the safari truck is on the point of being rolled over the bull elephant breaks off its attack and stands defiantly in front of them.

A brave guide from the second safari truck runs to help the three students who are frozen with fear in their seats shouting “get out, get out, get out” and rescues them.

He orders them to run to the safety of his truck keeping the wrecked first vehicle between them and the bull elephant as the guide and spotter also escape.

The terrified students were taken back to the safari lodge and have received counselling but were unhurt. The wrecked safari vehicle was later recovered by staff.

Bull elephants when they are ready to breed go into what is called musth, where their testosterone level can multiply by up to 60 times.

The become sexually aggressive and highly violent towards humans, and they secrete a tar like discharge on the side of their heads which warns of their sexual arousal.

The herbivores, which spend most of the day eating, are in musth for two to three months a year when they cover as many females as possible and fight their rivals.

They have been known to attack African villages. Elephants, mainly in musth, trample or crush to death an average of 500 people a year.

EcoTraining is based at the 18,000 acre Selati Game Reserve which is home to 135 elephants as well as black and white rhinos and lions, leopard and cheetah.

MD Anton Lategan said: “On a routine activity EcoTraining instructors and trainees came across a breeding herd of elephants and stopped to allow them to settle down.

“An elephant bull, who was with the breeding herd, mock charged the vehicle.

“The elephant bull mock charged again, when they moved forward slowly, and then made direct contact with the game drive vehicle and displaced it off the road.

“Once the vehicle had come to a standstill the trainees were moved to the second vehicle parked in close proximity by instructors with 25 years of experience.”

The general manager of Selati Game Reserve, Bryan Havemann, said: “Although the vehicle was badly damaged, thankfully none of the people on the vehicle were injured.”

The footage captured by an eco-student on the second safari truck has gone viral.

In 2018 a top safari ranger Mark Lautenbach, 33, was trampled to death by a bull elephant that had broken into a game park lodge on a rampage on the Madikwe Game Reserve, by the Kruger.

2. Minibus or Microbus Safari Vehicles

For smaller safari groups and shorter tours that don’t go through hugely rugged areas, adapted microbuses (or minibusses) are used. As safari vehicles, Toyota Quantums and Mercedes Sprinters are most commonly used. The optimal number in most of these safari vehicles is six to ten people, forward-facing.

These safari microbuses are specially adapted for safari travel and are generally equipped with GPS tracking, sliding windows, cooler boxes, fire extinguishers, and First Aid kits. They generally have a softer suspension than other safari vehicles, giving a slightly more comfortable trip. Many of them – especially on Kenya Safaris – also feature pop-up tops, allowing travelers to stand and view/photograph the countryside and animals from the minibus.

Some minibusses are fitted with air-conditioning. This is a welcome relief from the sweltering African heat but may detract from the whole experience of Africa, as the windows will be closed, blocking out the sounds of the bush.

10. Game Viewing Boat Cruises

Mokoro History

These traditional dug-out canoes are made of wood and guided by a ‘poler’, who stands at the helm. Angry elephant lifts safari truck into the air, ‘traumatizes’ tourists

An angry bull elephant in Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa attacked a safari truck, twice lifting it into the air and slamming it down as terrified tourists took cover between the seats.

Video posted on YouTube by iReport South Africa shows the attack from afar and from inside the truck.

The driver yelled at the elephant “hey, hey, move, move.” He slammed the side of his door. But nothing worked.

Finally, the driver backed up and the elephant lost interest, wandering off the road.

The South African reported that it remains unclear when this incident occurred and if anyone was injured.

Commenters on YouTube were critical of the driver, calling him an “idiot” and a guide “with no respect,” and insisting he be fired for “putting tourists in danger.”

But one commenter who claims a friend sent him a video that shows the complete story, not just the end, defended the driver’s actions.

“The elephant entered the car park whilst guests were both on foot in the open and on the walkway (fairly secure) to the hide,” the commenter stated. “The guide sat there quietly with his engine off until the elephant started to approach the vehicle. The elephant didn’t back off and kept coming closer, not responding to warning shouts and door slamming and slapping as they normally will.

“Whether or not the guide took the correct action next is not for me to say, but he took what he thought was the correct action to protect his guests and those on the car park. He started his engine and revved it, hoping the elephant would leave the car park. I understand why he did it, and hindsight is a wonderful thing. I hope the full video is released because I am sure you will all feel some compassion towards the guide and how absolutely terrified he must have been, whilst taking actions to protect others in a very difficult situation. I have no doubt that the guide and guests have been traumatized by this event and I beg for your understanding until you too have seen the full video. It makes so much more sense.”

Pissed Off Elephant Lifts African Safari Truck In The Air

Tourists in a south african safari park were thrown up in the air by an angry elephant..

A group of tourists in South Africa got the scare of a lifetime when an elephant approached their safari truck and lifted the front end of it into the air earlier this week. Note to self: do not piss off elephants .

This all happened on March 18 in Pilanesberg National Park, an area northwest of Johannesburg , according to ABC7 . A group of local South African tourists were in the area when they got too close to the elephant bull in an effort to take better pictures. That’s when the big fell got aggressive and approached the safari truck .

Videos taken by people on and off the truck showed the elephant lifting the front wheels of the vehicle off the ground with its tusks before letting it drop to the ground. As you may have imagined, a great deal of screaming can be heard in the video. You can see the guide backing the truck up and slamming his hands to try and convince the elephant to stop, but that very much did not work.

Eventually, the guide reportedly got out of the truck to chase the elephant away. That moment wasn’t captured on video, but I’m going to assume it worked since no one is dead. In fact, nobody was even hurt by the encounter with the big boy, but the park offered counseling for those who were rattled by what happened.

Here’s a little explainer of why the elephant may have acted the way it did, from ABC7 :

The tour operator Mankwe Game Trackers told ABC News they understand the elephant was in musth, a periodic state of the bull elephant characterized by aggressive behavior and a surge of testosterone levels.

This is a great way to travel Africa, having a guide and driver look after you mean you don't need to worry about anything at all and it's a great way to make new friends as well!

Botswana and Falls Overland: Wildlife Walks & Safari Drives

I was hesitant to book this tour because I have never been to Africa before. I was afraid for my safety and there were too many preparations (such as vaccines/camping equipment) for a week-long trip. However, this whole experience changed my mind and my preconceptions about Africa. We had an epic time with Patrick and Helms. They are both rockstars! Patrick is an exceptional person and a natural leader. He is an all-around guide, entertainer, cook, driver, doctor, foot splinter-remover etc. He made sure to accommodate everyone's needs, especially those with dietary restrictions. He immersed us in African culture by teaching us the phrases from different languages and singing songs. There is not a day that we do not sing "Jambo Bowana" except the first day he taught it to us because we all just woke up from our naps. Helms is the sweetest person on this tour! He is a reliable driver with a mechanic background. Our vehicle, Lando, had popped a tire and sparked a fire. His split second decision to stop and evacuate all passengers has prevented serious/lethal injuries. The Lando was not equipped with proper emergency gear and we had to ask passing vehicles for their fire extinguisher and jack. Helms remained calm and focused on fixing the Lando. Unfortunately, the damage was worse and the Lando could not continue on. We had to wait for a couple of vans that took 5 hours to get to us. Helms was left behind to watch over the vehicle for the next 3 days ALONE in a highway where lions roam at night. He prioritizes our safety and comfort. Throughout the entire trip, I know that I can trust this man with my life! I hope G Adventures would develop concrete/feasible back up plans for situations like these to protect their employees. The people of Africa are welcoming and kindhearted. My favourite part was to see the Okavanga Delta people. It was a wholesome, humbling and heartwarming time. Despite their limited resources (i.e., food/water), they still carry an optimistic outlook. This is an unforgettable experience! It saddens me that this tour had come to an end, but I am filled with joy to have seen Africa with such a great company. And I would do it all over again if I can have the Patrick and Helms! I can't name a better duo. Thanks guys!

Serengeti Trail

Serengeti and Ngorongoro are amazing! We were very lucky and saw a lot of big cats (lions everywhere!). Personally I would have done one more night to visit Ngorongoro because half a day there is too short time. The other stops (Kisii, Lake Victoria and Mio Wa Mbu) where not so interesting for me (I had more expectation for the lake, maybe), but are more “technical” stops for the long trip. Balloon safari in the Serengeti is very expensive but it’s something special to do.

Namibia & Botswana Uncovered

It was a very nice experience for a first group tour. It was a bit fast to my taste and sometimes I felt it was more about seeing than feeling the places we traveled to.

Tony and Sam were most excellent hosts, very knowledgable and informative.The tour was, in the end, a very life changing experience that I will treasure forever.The scenery, the animals, the people along the way were fantastic. It is hard to choose what was my favourite part of the tour, but a few notables would be Zanzibar, Victoria falls,Masaai Mara, Serengetti, The Crater, Namibia. Among individual camping area's Elephant Sands, Canyon Roadhouse, Kande Beach stand out in my mind.Again THANKS to Sam and Tony for making the trip a very warm and pleasurable experience, the meals that these guys can cook up on a 2 burner campstove are amazing, especially Tony's BBQ ribs, they are to die for.

The Grand Southern Safari

The itenerary was not always followed. The most egregious problem was staying 250 km (3 hrs.) on an extremely rough road from the gate of sossusvlei (dunes). It also made the day before about 150 km longer and the day after 100km longer. Neither accommodation listed on the itinerary was used. We also didn't get a half day in the delta that was on the itinerary. I will send a more detailed evaluation to trip advisor when we finish our trip.

The Southern Safari

What an incredible trip! Highly recommend the Southern Safari to everyone! Extremely good value for money, and also had amazing drivers and tour leader! Especially JB and Philippa! Both of them were always helpful and positive despite the stress that comes with organising a large group! I can recommed this trip to people of all ages being 17 myself and the oldest on our tour was in their 40's. Everyone got along well and enjoyed themselves! Absolute Africa is a great company!

Morocco All Aspects Tour

I have rated the trip as good but I must qualify in saying that it could have been a disaster. It all started before the trip even started. In order to avoid 22hrs of connecting flights and layoff, I have decided to stay an extra day so that I can catch a direct flight. I have asked Tour Rada to arrange for a hotel close the airport for 150CAD, When I received my voucher prior to the commencement of the trip I noticed there wasn't one for the extra night hotel. I asked Mr. Kahlil from the tour operator Morocco Discovery but received no voucher. I then called Tour Rada to ask them to confirm if Mr. Kahlil cannot make the arrangement, I want a refund of my 150CAD and make my own arrangement. It was then Mr. Kahlil came back with a note saying that he already has a confirmation at the Hetel Atlas Sky Airport. I told him I am OK with the selection and he returned with a note saying it is "all confirmed". As you would have guessed by now, there was no confirmation on record when I show up. Fortunately, the driver Mr Abder (I think his full name is Abderaman) stayed with me instead of just dropping me at the hotel entrance. He ended up prepaying for the hotel. Apparently, Mr. Kahlil has given Mr Abder some money to pay for unforeseen expenses. That is a clear indication that Mr. Kahlil know well in advance that there will be a lot of "unforeseen" events. According to the brochure, the tour will be accompany by a "Tour Leader" and "An Excellent Cook" who will be cooking us best Moroccan breakfast and dinner. I believe the original plan was for a group of 10. When no one except me and my wife show up, I can understand why there are no tour leader or cook. What I cannot understand is that there seemed to be very little planning considering that the tour is scheduled to run every two weeks all the way to Dec 2019. Every morning involve a fury of phone calls between the driver and his car rental agency (Mr Abder works for the car rental agency not Morocco Discovery) to find out where we will be staying that night. Because Mr Kahlil do not communicate directly with Mr Abder, there appears to be a large number of calls just to relate the negotiations back and forth. Some times new hotels provided to the driver days before were changed and he only find out because I was asking some questions that requires classification. It was like a new crisis every day. We only ended up staying in one of the hotels listed in the voucher. All other accommodations are last minute arrangements, many of which are not even paid directly by Morocco Discovery. Mr Abder has to paid with the "emergency fund". He was not just my driver, he is also my pro bono tour guide, my guardian angel without whom, the trip would have been a total disaster. In all fairness, I must give some credit to Mr Kahlil as there were a lot of mistakes but he more than made up for them in most cases. There were 5 nights where we were suppose to stay in camps but we ended up staying in cottages at camp sites of guest houses instead. At the end of the day, I seriously doubt if he makes any money out of the trip. This leads me to the advice I have for travelers who plan to take the tour based on this review. I gave the tour an overall good rating not because the tour is well planned. On the contrary, if it was not for the herculean effort of the driver, the tour could easily have been a disaster. It now turns out to be one of the most memorable trip we have ever taken so far due to the many challenges overcame all along the way. However, this is no warranty that the same outcome is awaiting the next traveler. Please take into consideration all the warning signs not just our outcome. When I book a tour, I always look for one that seemed to be good value but one I think the operator can earn a fair return as well, a win win combination. A badly run tour that consistently loose money will eventually run out of options and ended up hurting themselves as well as their customers and suppliers. There is no fun to be abandoned in the middle of a tour when an operator went bankrupt. Based on my experience with this tour, there are ample warning signs for you to consider with care. Good luck.

Nairobi To Cape Town (56 Days) Coast To Coast

Great value trip from Nairobi to Cape Town. Well laid out truck (bench seat face-to-face style, rather than coach style seats). Plenty of storage space. Good itinerary, including via Zimbabwe rather than most companies which go via Zambia. Good choice of excursions. Let down by weak tour leadership (friendly enough, but poor organisation) and too much group drinking sessions (including tour leader), but this may have just been this particular group (who otherwise were great company and made good friendships post-trip). Overall though, definitely recommended.

African Sky

The two of us (my wife and I age 32) were quite happy with the trip. The wildlife spotting was excellent and the people throughout Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda were amazing. As with any tour like this, the people you're with make a huge difference. We were lucky to have a really good group overall, but as always there will be some people you won't enjoy being around. Here are our tips or things we wish we had known ahead of time: 1) There will be very long days in the truck. Even though it's 7 hours to the destination, you might spend 4 hours in the truck leaving the park/wildlife spotting before your journey starts. So you're usually in the truck between 7 - 12 hours each day. 2) Find out what special excursion options are available before you leave as best you can because you'll need to organize it with the driver and guide in advance. Some may be helpful and anticipate it, but make sure they know what you want to do. 3) ATMs are few and far between, so make sure you get enough cash. Tanzania was more expensive than we expected relative to Kenya and Rwanda. 4) Our biggest disappointment in the trip was the gorilla trek from Kisoro. It was our most anticipated part of the trip, but unfortunately our tour guide 'checked out' and let the manager at the accommodation organize everything. We were looking forward to a 3-4 hour hike through the Bwindi forest to locate the gorillas but were never informed about how the day would go, what to expect or asked anything about fitness or expectations prior to getting into the transport at 6am the day of the trek. On the way there, the driver asked if we wanted a long or short trek in a very conversational way and each person in transport responded with their preference (3 long and 1 short). We had no idea how this would affect our day or that our responses were being used to plan our day. We felt it was him simply being curious. When we arrived at the meeting point, the drivers ended up organizing the groups from multiple accommodations and our driver put all 4 of us in the shortest trek of the day. We requested multiple times to join a couple that we had been traveling and planning our gorilla adventure with that was in the other transport vehicle from the accommodation, but they told us that it had all been decided and we could not change. The driver then spoke to the rangers and updated us with information saying that our two groups had about the same distance to walk (1-2 hours). We were satisfied with that and stopped trying to join the other group. After walking down an open dirt path for about 15 minutes outside the boundary of the forest, we found our gorilla group 10 meters into the forest. The gorillas were amazing and we really enjoyed our time with them. But for us, a major part of the adventure involved tracking the gorillas through the Bwindi forest. When we got back to our vehicle, we asked our driver if he could take the 3 of us that wanted a longer walk on a trail in the forest and he requested an additional $125 / person for a 45-minute walk. As it turned out, the other group went on a 4 hours trek. At that point, we realized that our driver simply told us what we wanted to hear so that we would shut up. For the most expensive and for most people the highlight of the trip, I really felt that the guide (and Absolute) did not take any responsibility or make any effort to ensure the Gorilla trek was the highlight most people want it to be.

Amazing experience! Before arriving, I was nervous about what overlanding would be like, especially as someone who had never camped before. It was exactly what I expected it would be and the staff did a great job being their for anything you could possibly need. They clearly explained daily/weekly itinerary, how to put up your tent, what to buy, where to eat, what to see etc. And they will even fix your flip flop if it breaks! Overlanding as a type of travel may not be for everyone, every overlanding company drives longs days and does some camping. But if you want to slow down, see the land and meet really cool people I couldn't recommend Oasis more. The best part was that all of the staff are incredibly helpful, from answering questions online prior to my trip, to their caring CEO, to my amazing driver and group leader. I did 93 in africa and I've already booked another trip on the silk road. Can't wait to be back!

I really love my Serengeti trip! The workers were awesome, Jacob, Evy, and Eric rocked it! They were always ready for anything. The food was always delicious and we never went hungry. People said they liked a certain thing and she made sure to include that. Jacob was helpful with setting up and always told us what to expect and was full of knowledge. Eric was an awesome driver.

You’ll be conducted through pristine live oak hammocks and ephemeral wetlands in comfort and safety where you’ll get spectacular close-up encounters with giraffe, ostrich, bongo antelope, Grant’s zebra, blackbuck antelope, axis deer, warthog, red river hog, Père David’s deer, pygmy hippopotamus, Brazilian tapir, scimitar-horned oryx, and more unique and endangered species in large herds. What kind of animals do you have?

Giraffe Ranch has hundreds of animals representing 70+ different species all housed under huge, ancient oaks and grass lands in this beautiful environment that is right out of an African safari. Because our property consists of about 50 acres of pristine wilderness, we’re able to house a variety of exotic species such as giraffe, zebra, bongo antelope, otters, lemurs, hippos, pere’ Davids deer, warthogs, monkeys, and more! You’ll also have a chance to see a variety of native wildlife.

I do not want to pay for a tour; can I just come and feed the animals?

No. The optional add-ons are only available with the purchase of one of our safaris.

Which tour time is best to view the animals?

All of our tour times are great! The animals that we house here are specifically chosen because they do well in central Florida’s climate.

Where do your animals come from?

Because we have so much space for our animals, babies are a very common thing! Most of our animals are born onsite. We buy, sell, and trade with other licensed facilities.

What should I wear?

Although not required, we recommend close-toed shoes. We go rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the weather.

Can I bring my pet?

We do not allow any unauthorized animals on the premises, which includes our driveway and parking lot. Please leave all dogs, cats, and other furry critters at home.

Will I see every animal during the tour?

Our guides make every effort to encourage our residents to greet our tour groups but the distance at which they are viewed can vary due to the large areas our animals inhabit.

This Rivian R1T Safari Rig Looks Like the Ultimate All-Terrain Golf Cart

Slightly silly looks aside, the Rivian makes a neat choice for a safari rig for a few reasons.

Electric trucks' silent operation helps them excel at exploring the outdoors. It also helps in caring for it too, like the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust does with Rivian R1T pickups custom-modified for safari duty.

These photos of the trucks were taken by an environmental lawyer visiting Kenya and then circulated on Rivian Forums and Facebook . They show a Rivian converted to right-hand drive (Kenya drives on the left), and its cab cut away from its beltline up. That allows it to fit a safari canopy and four rows of seats, for a passenger capacity of eight, with excellent visibility in all directions.

It's the perfect vehicle for wilderness tours and conservation, as the R1T's electric drivetrain doesn't drown out the sounds of nature, or startle animals the way combustion engines can. Should a bull elephant or hippo charge the truck, its dual- or quad-motor four-wheel drive can skedaddle it to safety—and over any terrain, with excellent ground clearance, suspension articulation, and traction.

They're not just for sightseeing, either; they're also vital maintenance vehicles. The Trust says it uses its Rivians for anti-poaching operations, transporting firefighters and rangers, and local health and education programs. It charges the trucks using a solar power array, which with Kenya literally on the equator works well at all times of year.

The Rivian in these photos might be based on one of the four originally delivered to the Trust in October 2022, as part of a conservation pilot project with Rivian. A series of R1S SUVs are supposed to follow—it's not clear if they'll be modified in the same fashion, but it's hard to imagine them being any less of off-road all-stars than the R1Ts are.

An elderly woman was killed in Africa during a safari trip -- this after an elephant charged her party's vehicle ... and flipped it over, which left her fatally wounded.

The unidentified woman 80-year-old was on a safari Saturday in Zambia at the Kafue National Park -- and at one point in the excursion, a bull elephant charges their truck ... and rams into it head-on, all of which was captured in a dramatic video.

The elephant tips over the vehicle, and you can hear panicked screams from the tour guide as well as the patrons -- including what sounds like the woman who actually died.

A chief executive of a conservation and hospitality company called Wilderness Safaris -- which was heading up this trip -- later confirmed that an American tourist had been killed in the attack ... and that another female guest had been seriously injured, and was flown to a hospital.

Four other guests who were part of this safari were treated on-site for minor injuries, and were provided trauma counseling as well.

In terms of how this happened, Wildness says the guide's route became blocked by the terrain and vegetation as they were driving along -- and that they didn't have enough time to move the vehicle out of the way before the elephant could hit them.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.
