We're based in Rome, Italy and Santa Fe, New Mexico. We spend most of the year in Rome, developing relationships with local travel experts in the Mediterranean and scouting new destinations and experiences.

Founder Melissa Cicci has traveled widely throughout Europe, the Arabian Gulf, Asia, and Latin America. She is a private travel specialist, as well as a tour director for affinity groups such as university alumni associations and cultural societies. Healthy and tasty food at the Four Seasons in Santa Fe

Santa Fe Itinerary

This itinerary combines luxury, great food, the outdoors and arts in Santa Fe and can be as relaxed or adventurous as you like. It places you at the Four Seasons Rancho Encantado, which is not downtown, but nestled alongside the Santa Fe National Forest and close to the Santa Fe Opera. There is free shuttle service to Santa Fe’s downtown, plus a variety of built-in adventures we think you’ll like to explore Santa Fe.

Day 1: Arrive to Santa Fe

Private transfer from the Albuquerque Airport to your hotel in Santa Fe. Check in at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, where luxury meets nature, just a 10-minute drive from The Santa Fe Opera House. 

Your casita room, complete with a wood burning kiva fireplace, heated floors and a deep soaking tub offers all the privacy and comforts of home in a single-storey, 630-square-foot (59-square-metre) Southwestern abode. These casitas are equipped with an indoor wood-burning kiva fireplace, heated floors, and a deep soaking tub. Outside, enjoy a furnished patio.

Savor a welcome drink, before getting settled and enjoying the spa or grounds before dinner (included).

Day 2: Mountains & Native American Culture

OPTION 1: FULL DAY AT BANDELIER AND SAN ILDEFONSO PUEBLO 

• Guided hike  at Bandelier National Monument with  pick up  from the hotel. 

Take an easy hike along Frijoles Canyon and  learn about the history and culture of the Native American people  who once inhabited this area. Your guide will point out petroglyphs along the cliffs and show you various hidden caves.

• At around 1:00PM, the group will be transported to  San Ildefonso Pueblo  for a traditional  Native American feast  
• After lunch, the group will enjoy  a pottery making demonstration  and  a guided walk  around the Plaza at San Ildefonso Pueblo. The group will meet  Elmer Torres , who once served as the Governor of San Ildefonso Pueblo, and be able to enjoy learning more about the history of the Pueblo People.

OPTION 2: GUIDED HIKE AT BANDELIER AND MOUNTAIN BIKING 

• Guided hike at  Bandelier National Monument with  pick up  from the hotel. 
• Catered picnic  lunch  at Bandelier and transportation back to Santa Fe or
• Guided Mountain Bike excursion  along the Rail Trail from 2:30PM to 5:30PM. This is an easy ride with great views of the surrounding mountains. There are uphill and downhill sections but, overall, it’s an easy excursion on a trail that is packed will for mountain biking.

Day 3: Santa Fe Horseback Riding and Relaxation

Saddle up to explore Santa Fe on a two-hour ride in the Pecos Wilderness.

• This riding outfitter takes pride in their horses and matching horse and rider. Group rides are booked by skill level and beginning level riders will not be placed on intermediate or experienced level rides.
• All riders must provide their height, weight and skill level at the time of booking in order to match riders to the horse and group.  Weight limits vary depending on horse availability. Riders who weigh more than 225 pounds (235 lbs during winter months) cannot be accommodated.
• Hotel pick up and transfer R/T included.

After horseback riding in the morning, spend the afternoon at the resort. Take a hike, enjoy the pool, book a spa experience or find somewhere to enjoy Santa Fe views with a good book.

Unplug, recharge, and pamper yourself at your resort. Several options are available, we will be happy to reserve your time and ensure you indulge in a serene environment. Ask us for more details. 

Day 4: Santa Fe Plaza & Downtown

Meet your guide in town after reaching Santa Fe historical district by Four Season complimentary shuttle. 

Follow your dedicated guide for a tour of  historical downtown Santa Fe,  followed by a curated  Canyon Road art walking tour . 

Your guide will bring a fresh perspective to Santa Fe’s historic arts district. Home to over 80 art galleries, Canyon Road is a “must see” for any art lover visiting Santa Fe.

There are lots of cute shops and restaurants in downtown Santa Fe. Enjoy lunch and also dinner, if you choose, downtown. Shuttle back to the Four Seasons.

Day 5: Santa Fe Relaxation

Enjoy the day on your own in Santa Fe, luxuriating at the Four Seasons or exploring more art and culture in Santa Fe. 

Day 6: From Santa Fe… Home

After breakfast, check out of the Four Seasons and head home.

Babette Alfieri, Founder & Owner

Africa Calls, Ltd., a small boutique travel company specializing in Southern and East African safaris, was founded by Babette Alfieri in 1989 and is registered in the US as a limited corporation. The permanent base of operation is in Santa Fe, New Mexico where Babette and her daughter, Christina Alfieri have established their office. Babette’s background in the travel industry began in 1971 with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in their 5th Avenue, New York office. In 1974 she joined South African Airways in New York where she handled sales, marketing and public relations until she left in 1980 to join the prestigious tour operator, Abercrombie and Kent. She was Vice President of Sales Eastern USA with specific responsibility to develop special interest travel programs to Southern Africa with American Zoos and Museums. She designed and arranged many such programs until 1986 when A&K transferred her to Zambia’s magnificent Luangwa Valley, to handle all of their incoming Zambian clients. For the following three years she also traveled around the world marketing the company’s Southern African division. In 1989, she founded Africa Calls with the intention of offering unique adventures far off the beaten track, and away from the ever-increasing tourist crowds. Today Babette’s time is split between Zambia and Santa Fe.

Christina Alfieri, President & Owner

In 1995, Christina joined Babette full time at Africa Calls as her business partner. Prior to this, Christina’s career began in the finance and private banking field where she worked for Chase Manhattan Bank and Brown Brothers Harriman in Boston for eight years. Christina has traveled extensively throughout Southern Africa since early childhood, and brings a wealth of African knowledge and adventure travel experience to the company. Today Babette and Christina are continually updating Africa Calls with regular travels throughout Southern and East Africa to keep informed on the latest safari products, in addition to both accompanying selected small groups annually on safari. The entire administrative responsibility of the Africa Calls office is Christina’s domain. Her impeccable attention to detail has become Africa Calls’ trademark, and is illustrated by the number of repeat travelers and referrals that we receive. Africa Calls is consistently among the top ten producers for some of Southern Africa’s most prestigious safari camps and land operators. Africa Calls objective is not only to show you the true wilderness areas where wildlife abounds within Southern and East Africa, but where possible to also introduce you to the local people and communities. Should you desire you will have the opportunity to visit schools and clinics and to meet local artists, purchase their goods, and witness traditional ways of life. With over five decades of combined African experience, Africa Calls, Ltd. is able to offer their clients a truly customized safari of the highest caliber. Karen Schwoerer, Office Manager

Karen Schwoerer joined Africa Calls in 2018 as Office Manager. Originally from a small town in Wisconsin, USA, Karen was drawn to Santa Fe, New Mexico, by a love of mountains and sunshine. Her career in office administration has previously afforded her opportunities in interior design, education, and healthcare, but travelling has long been her passion. Her adventures have brought her to, amongst other places, the beaches of Greece, the sunflower fields of Macedonia, the pyramids of Egypt, many a Parisian café, and national parks around the USA. Karen loves the outdoors and spends most of her spare time hiking, bicycling, and camping. She’s also a proponent of the circus arts and is often found hanging from a trapeze, stilting, or clowning. Africa is of particular interest to Karen, who studied African History, along with Anthropology and Linguistics, while studying at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Westwind Travel did a great job of arranging travel for me to the Seattle area. First, they set it up for April 2020, but I had to cancel, due to Covid--everything shut down in my destination. Terry kept track of my reservations with the airline, which she said were eligible for a full credit when I reschedule, even though I paid for a non-refundable fare! A year later, I was able to make the trip, and the ticket somehow magically had dropped to nearly half the already-discounted price! Score! Terry's assistant had researched it for my spring 2021 trip, and found that virtually-free fare, and told me I'll have credit left over for future travel! Amazing! I love these people! It's not the first time I've used them, and I will continue to in the future. I'm so glad they've managed to stay in business all these years, with all the ups and downs the US economy has been though. Hang in there, team!

This is the worst travel agency ever. Stay away! Terry, the owner, totally screwed up my Christmas trip to New Zealand to visit my little brother. It is now March and I am STILL trying to get credit for the trip. STAY AWAY FROM WESTWIND TRAVEL AGENCY IN NEW MEXICO!!!
