Fly fishing in Northumberland

Fishing in Northumberland

You'll be hooked to northumberland.

Pack up your rod and bait and visit Northumberland's lakes , rivers, islands and coast where you will find a wealth of fishing opportunities. No matter what aspect of fishing interests you, Northumberland can offer you the best. Whether you’d like to fish for salmon and sea trout, wild brown trout, or rainbow trout there are numerous venues available. River fishing can be catered for from the mighty Tweed in the North, to the Tyne in the south. Between these two rivers there are the River Coquet , Aln, Wansbeck and Till , which all provide exciting opportunities to catch wild fish. Coarse fishing enthusiasts appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of the Tyne and the lower reaches of most of our rivers while casting for perch, roach, dace, gudgeon and pike. Larger reservoirs , such as Kielder and Derwent (famous for grayling fishing in the autumn and winter), allow anglers to bait, spin or fly fish. Smaller still waters, at Chatton, Thrunton Long Crag, Caistron, South Linden, Higham Lakes, Sweethope Loughs, and Langley Dam, all offer excellent lake fishing for the novice while still providing a challenge for the more experienced. Most of the smaller lakes are fly fishing only but coaching can be arranged prior to the actual day. These still waters are dotted all around the county and one will be within easy travelling distance no matter where you are staying . There are professional fly fishing coaches and guides available who can provide any tackle that is required and ensure your day fishing is fun. The stunning Northumberland coastline is so varied for sea fishing trips, any fisherman will be in their element. There are superb sandy beaches , and numerous rocky areas which provide the shore angler the chance to catch a wide variety of saltwater species including cod, pollack, and summer mackerel. Casting a line from a pier can be fun too! Craster , Amble , Seahouses , and Blyth all have piers and charter fishing boats for those who wish to go sea trout fishing. Be sure to check the Northumberland County Council website in advance of your visit for up to date information on fishing permits and licences, as well as checking tide times for tidal rivers and islands.

Tweed - World Class Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing

Horncliffe Fishings Tweed - The Beat

Situated on the border between Scotland and England near to Norham village with its historic castle, church, pubs and butcher (that sells fishing supplies, pies, sandwiches and drinks –  Traditional Butchers, Game Dealers, Wine Merchants & Cheese Specialists R.G. Foreman & Son – Founded 1840).

The fishing hut has stove to keep guests warm and looks out across a lawn on to the river. Sitting between Norham village and Berwick-upon-Tweed

The Horncliffe Fishings are easily accessible for ‘confirmed-as-booked’ customers/guests only.

Vehicular access to the normal meeting point at the Greenhill Fishing Hut is via a hardcore track, which is generally smooth (but not suitable for a Ferrari or other cars with low ground clearance) leading through privately owned farmland for about 1 ¼ miles to the Greenhill Fishing Hut which occupies a very peaceful setting at the heart of the beat.

There are now 2 cattle grids to cross but if you do open a gate accessing or departing the beat please ensure to leave it securely closed. There may well be livestock in the fields that are not immediately visible from the track or its gateways.

Please drive slowly and make sure to keep dogs well away from livestock. Thank you for your much appreciated assistance.

Greenhill Fishing Hut

A fishing hut (formerly the netting shiel) situated at the bottom of the Beat 2 is equipped with wood gas and gas fires, a small refrigerator and gas cooking hobs, together with barbeque facilities and adequate parking spaces. With sufficient notice an additional boatman can be arranged to provide ghillieing at a cost per day.

SUSTAINABILITY

The River Tweed Wild Salmon Co is committed to sustainabilily and the preservation in this unique location.

EXPERIENCE HISTORY, DISCOVER THE STORY

Based in Berwick Upon Tweed, a historic walled town famed for it’s turbulent past, the River Tweed Wild Salmon Co still maintain and preserve the traditional skills of salmon fishing using Net & Coble which have remained largely unchanged for over 900 years. Discover the story of this amazing tradition first hand with one of our experience days.

WE ARE COMMITED TO SUSTAINABLE FISHING

The recent Scottish Wild Fisheries Review by the Scottish Government has deemed The River Tweed to be a Grade 1 river. This means that the wild fish stocks of salmon and sea trout are healthy and sustainable, therefore, under the guidance of the Scottish Government  a harvestable surplus can be taken from the river. These conservation measures are under constant review.

The River Tweed Wild Salmon Company appreciates the importance of sustainability and delay the season start to help protect Spring stocks of salmon.

Net fishing can legally start on April 1st but we usually delay our start as we are mindful of fish numbers in the Spring . When we do start it is predominately for sea trout. The River Tweed Wild Salmon Company is the only commercial fishery left on the River Tweed and is therefore the only route to market for  Tweed wild salmon and sea trout as it is illegal to sell rod caught fish. We tag and record  each fish caught to ensure traceability and providence. This gives our customers the reassurance of origin and guarantees the highest of quality every time.

Each session lasts approximately 5 hours. Morning, afternoon and evening sessions are all available throughout the season.

EXPLORE BERWICK

Fishing on the river tweed.

The Tweed has a world famous reputation, running through Berwick and the Scottish Borders, forming a historic boundary between Scotland and England and acting as one of the best salmon rivers in the UK with people visiting from all over the world for Berwick Fishing. Best known as a salmon river but it also contains good stocks of brown trout and grayling. Regarded as a Scottish river but the last 19 miles extend into the English river banks where we take pride of knowing that there is a river that produces more fly caught fish that any other river in Britain. There are 2 ½ miles of single bank fishing and half a mile of double bank fishing, with easy wading on both sides. Wild fly fishing can be an exhilarating experience and also quite daunting, so why not speak with a Berwick Fishing guide and improve your chances of landing a prime catch. Choosing the right flies is of the upmost importance when looking to have a successful day on the river and there are plenty of tackle shops and online experts to buy from in the area.

Local Fishing Season

The longest season of any salmon river in the country, the Berwick fishing season runs from 1st February through to the 30th November, with fishing Monday to Saturday. Anglers can take up the opportunity to spin for salmon from the 15th month. March sees the water temperature increase and levels rise, encouraging salmon to move more freely and improving the number of catches. Summer months are very popular when the selection of fish in the river increases; the excellent fishing can be enjoyed at very reasonable rates. Autumn fishing on the Tweed brings in keen fishermen from across the globe for the big black-end fish run. This time of year is when migratory fish head up the river to spawn so the amount of fish in the river is quite staggering; it is a good time to visit the Tweed with many anglers securing catches in double figures.

Berwick Fishing Information

The fishing prices in Berwick vary throughout the year and are charged per rod. Double check the fishing regulations before setting out. All sections of the Tweed Angling Code are adopted by all beats and must be observed strictly by rods fishing the water. For more information about fishing the Tweed contact the River Tweed Commission.

Sea Fishing

The coasts and harbours in Northumberland provide visitors with a fantastic opportunity to go sea fishing. Charter boats will take visitors off shore from Berwick harbour for a day of truly magnificent fishing in our North Sea. When you arrive back specialities such as Berwick crabs and lobsters can be seen being pulled off the brightly coloured fishing boats in the harbour. This is a chance to impress the locals with your own catch of the day.

Berwick Fishing History

Berwick upon Tweed no longer has the thriving herring port that it did in the 19th century, employing hundreds of local people as fishermen; sadly the days of herring trade in the town are over but a trip to Holy Island just 25 miles away is a great way to appreciate the hulls of the old herring drifters.

Hi all going to be staying at Berwick caravan park next week for a few days. any tipvwhere to fish where is a good tackle shop to get a bit of bait from? Is there any mackerel about still or what's about? Thanks john

sea fishing trips berwick upon tweed

Hi Bully Unfortunately there are no shops to get bait from that I know of without travelling a good 40 miles to Amble. That said Amble is a short drive off the A1 and you will pass the turn off for it if you are driving up: 4 Newburgh St, Amble, Morpeth NE65 0AQ From Berwick you have an array of sandy beaches just to the south of you, Goswick springs to mind as being one of the nearest where there are Flounder and small Turbot to be had at the moment. They will both go for supermarket mackerel baits. To the North about 7 or 8 miles up the A1 there is Eyemouth (opposite the golf course) which may still have the odd Pollock about but I would very much doubt you'd get Mackerel now. It throws up Cod & Coalies all year, as well as St Abbs (depending on your love of climbing). These will go for fresh Mussels (Berwick Morrisons sells them) There is a pier in Berwick that you may be tempted to try as well. I have thought about it in the past but a quick google of it put me off as there appeared to be a majority opinion that it was crap, but you never know.

I'm sure there's a tackle shop on Marygate (Game Fair) that sells bait.. or at least they used to! Might be worth popping in and if he can't supply it he might point you in the right direction.

Really?? I was wondering why I wasnt able to access there website a few days ago... shame cos the guy was always very helpful everytime I went in!

Hi; I'm staying at Haggerston in early April, are the beaches there any good and if so what can I expect to catch. I shall be bringing some squid and Mackeral and perhaps oiled lug. Would these baits work.

Are there any beaches nearby where I can pump a few worms?

sea fishing trips berwick upon tweed

you can dig lug at the little beach next to the pier (north side), used to be cracking for canny lug but last time I tried was hard work, still enough for a sesh though. Sorry to hear about gamefair like

Going to give it a bash next week will let you know how I get on.

sea fishing trips berwick upon tweed

Was in Berwick in mid September and it had shut down then. You can get very basic frozen bait at the FMA in Eyemouth just 8 miles further on - a tub of frozen Mackerel for £2.50 if he still has any. Had a few other bits. Might be worth ringing first - Tel: 018907 50373 I've been looking at bait stockists in the area for a while now and it's basically dry between Edinburgh and quite a way south of Berwick. As are stockists of fishing tackle. I'm looking at it as a possible business venture. Enjoy Seahouses - love that part of the country. I usually stay in Armstrong Cottages - the green and white ones on the road between Bamburgh and Seahouses.

Thanks I am looking forward to it never been before but I heard the area is stunning.
