Difference between a photo tour & workshops.

There is a typical question to understand what are the differences between both types. All our trips are focus to teach all participants , but as you can see in our list of trips, you can find different kinds of trips.

For us, teach & travel is essential on all trips. But we differentiate the tour according to the conditions we can find. Basically, a Photo Workshop is more focused to teach you than showing you a place , so the itinerary can change according to great opportunities that can appear through the trip.  A Photo Tour is focused to follow the itinerary and visit all places always that weather doesn’t make us change plans.

How to take professional large group photos (15 Simple tips)

shooting photo groupe tours

At Surf Office, we’ve seen our fair share of large group photos.

From small groups of 20 to large parties of over 100 employees, we’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges of group photography.

That’s why—to take the pressure off you—we often provide a professional photographer to capture the memories of your offsite retreat .

But great photo opportunities inevitably come along when the professional is absent, and in these moments you’ll wish you had a few tricks of the trade hidden up your sleeve.

To help prepare you for this moment, we’re sharing 15 simple group photography tips for better large group photos. ‍

Level up your group photography with these beginner-friendly tips

Knowing how to take group photos is a useful skill with benefits that extend beyond your company retreat.

After learning the following tips, you’ll come up with better group photo ideas and feel more confident the next time you’re on a family holiday, at a birthday or attending a Christmas dinner.

shooting photo groupe tours

1. Scope out a location ahead of time

Preparation is key to getting perfect group photos, and it starts with finding a suitable backdrop.

When you’re scouting your surroundings, look for somewhere that won’t distract too much from your subjects. A chaotic background with lots of patterns, colours or objects will make it difficult to pick out faces.

Keep it simple.

A location with natural level changes will also help you to create more interesting compositions. Look out for gentle slopes, rocks, public benches, etc.

If you’ve got exciting activities planned for the day, consider taking your group photo on-site. For example, if your taking a tour of a football stadium, a group photo in the stands could be perfect! ‍

2. Bring props if necessary

Once you’ve found the perfect location, you can decide whether the scene could be enhanced by the use of props.

A flat location, for example, could benefit from a few chairs or blankets that will allow you to switch up the levels.

It’s up to you how visible you make your props. If they’re aesthetically pleasing, you might wish to make them a centrepiece. But if they’re purely functional, you might want to disguise them when you start composing your shot.

shooting photo groupe tours

3. Prepare your camera gear beforehand

Besides the camera itself, two pieces of gear are must-haves for group photography, they are:

  • A wide-angle lens

A wide-angle lens allows you to get closer to your subjects while keeping everything neatly within the frame. Without a wide-angle lens, you’ll be forced to stand far back, causing you to lose lots of facial detail.

The tripod helps keep your camera steady and gives your subjects a collective focal point. If you’re shooting at slow shutter speeds, the tripod is essential for achieving crystal-clear images.

And the nice-to-haves…

  • Light diffuser

A remote allows you to take multiple photographs while away from the camera. Without a remote, you’ll be forced to use the timer setting, restricting you to just one photo at a time.

If you’re shooting indoors, it could be argued that a flash deserves a place on the must-have list. But because you can achieve great results without one, it’s here, among the nice-to-haves. Shooting with a flash delivers even light to all of your subjects and reduces heavy shadows. Just make sure to warn everybody that you’re using one first!

Light diffusers fold down pretty small and they’re lightweight, making them handy to travel with. If you’re shooting indoors, especially on a bright, sunny day, placing a light diffuser over the window will soften your lighting and improve your results.

shooting photo groupe tours

4. Choose a time of day for your photos

The best time of day to take your group photo is during the early morning or evening (otherwise known as dawn and dusk).

This is because these times of day provide soft, warm light and long shadows—essential elements of great photographs.

Shooting in the middle of the day, particularly when the sun is bright, could result in flat colours, racoon-eyed subjects and squinting faces.

shooting photo groupe tours

5. Establish a dress code

A group photo is a fantastic opportunity to show off the company merchandise!

If you’d like everybody to wear branded clothing, make sure to remind your employees to bring these garments with them.

Don’t want branded clothing? Opt for solid colours.

Too many colours and patterns in your group photo can be overwhelming. When the photo day comes around, ask your employees to wear plain clothing in simple colours like black and white.

If some employees didn’t get the memo, try to disperse the colours and patterns within the image. Prevent colours and patterns from clustering together as this can be distracting.

shooting photo groupe tours

6. Pay attention to the details

When you’re busy directing a large group of people, it can be easy to forget about the little things.

But these details make a big difference to your final image.

When you’re arranging your group, look out for things like untucked shirts, scruffy ties, unkempt hair, etc.

Try not to take too long with this, as you don’t want your subjects to become bored or restless. If you need to, enlist the help of a detail-oriented assistant.

shooting photo groupe tours

7. Find the right lighting

As we mentioned earlier, the best time of day to take your group photo is in the morning or evening because the light is warmer and softer.

If you’re taking your photos outside, look for a shady spot and position your subjects towards the light source. Remember this: good lighting is more important than a good background.

If you’re forced to take your photos in the sun, position your group with their backs to the sun or wait for some cloud cover.

For indoor group photos, make use of your flash and light diffuser to provide even lighting to each of your subjects.

When you’re framing your shot, look out for any stray shadows from things like window frames, trees, buildings etc. ‍

8. Create a balanced composition

Composing a group image can be an overwhelming challenge. With so many people to organise, it takes a charismatic individual to hold the attention of the crowd and provide clear direction.

If you aren’t experienced with composing large group photos, here’s one piece of advice: don’t complicate things.

A balanced composition is typically the easiest to pull off. Here, you’ll position the tallest subjects at the back and in the middle, and the shorter subjects in the front and to the sides.

Oh, and don’t forget to use the landscape or some props to create different levels and overlap your subjects.

Asymmetrical placements work too, but they’re more challenging to pull off.

If you’re dealing with a very large group, don’t make the composition too deep, that is, don’t create too much distance between the front and back rows—this can result in some blurry faces!

shooting photo groupe tours

9. Form connections between your subjects

In the heat of the moment, you might not think about the connections between your employees. Sure, a congealed mass of people creates feelings of oneness, but maybe there are more creative ways to go about it?

Consider whether you can segment your group in some way. Perhaps you’d like to arrange your group according to departments, for example?

Whatever you decide to do, creating connections between your subjects can make an everyday group photo more unique. ‍

10. Find a good vantage point

You’ve probably noticed it yourself: photos always look better when they’re taken slightly from above.

The same goes for your large group photo.

If you can, take your pictures from an elevated position (bring a step ladder if you think you’ll need one). This eliminates unwanted double chins and—if the light is coming from above—reduces dark facial shadows.

shooting photo groupe tours

11. Shoot with a smaller f-stop

Uh-oh, now we’re getting technical.

Don’t worry, this is a pretty simple tip.

F-stops control the amount of light hitting the lens. A large f-stop creates a shallower depth of field (more blur between foreground and background), while a small f-stop creates a deeper depth of field (less blur between foreground and background).

Large group photos are often layered, so using a smaller f-stop ensures that all of your subjects appear in focus .

However, if you’re shooting in low-level lighting, beware: a smaller f-stop will require you to use a slow shutter speed which could make your image blurry.

In this scenario, use a tripod and ask your subjects to remain as still as possible! ‍

12. Mix up the poses

To come this far, you’ve put in a lot of hard work—now make the most of it!

As the director, you dictate the mood of the photograph. If you want a serious picture, communicate this to your subjects. If you want something more casual, give them a conversation prompt and ask them to speak to the person next to them.

You can even ask your group to force a fake laugh, which, inevitably, will turn into genuine hilarity.

shooting photo groupe tours

13. Don’t let others shoot over your shoulder

Organising a large group can be an intimidating task and—in an attempt to increase the likelihood of good photos—we’re often tempted to ask others to take photographs with us.

This is a big mistake and one you should avoid.

The obvious problem with this is that your subjects will be looking in different directions. But what’s more, they’ll be receiving direction from multiple sources.

Some will be looking at the ground between photos, one employee might be picking their nose, while others have turned around to steal a glimpse at the sunset.

Take full responsibility for the photos and you’ll get better results. ‍

14. Look out for candid opportunities

A group photo doesn’t always need to be a choreographed procedure.

If your group is engaged in an activity and you happen to have your camera close at hand, make the most of the opportunity!

You might find—in these “fly on the wall” moments—that you capture your best images. Unaware that they’re being photographed, your subjects will appear more natural and at ease .

shooting photo groupe tours

15. Be confident and take the lead

We’ve purposefully left this tip until last, but it’s as important—if not more—than the others.

Getting great group photographs is all about confidence. With so many people to organise, you need to embrace the role and provide the necessary guidance .

Don’t be afraid to be bossy and charismatic. People are looking for direction and it’s up to you to give it to them. Plus, the more direct you are, you quicker you can get your shots—you don’t want your subjects to get bored or frustrated, so make it quick!

What our participants say about our recent photo tours?

shooting photo groupe tours

I have been in Prague before and have taken many “tourist” pictures, but on this photo tour, I was not a tourist. I was a photographer (and Martin had to occasionally remind me of that. ) This time, I took photos that were different from those that millions of tourists take every day. Our tour group visited several places that tourists don’t even know about, and when we shot in the popular tourist locations, we were shooting photos in a different way – seeing the tourist sites through the eyes of a photographer. We looked at details, patterns, and interesting compositions in the Moravian landscapes, and in the many different types of architecture and streets across the various cities and towns. We even photographed some ordinary, mundane things and turned them into fascinating photographs. One afternoon, when it started to rain during our shoot, we found something else to photograph and came away with creative, unusual pictures. I even captured a photo of a “ghost” lurking around the Old Town Hall tower. Some new techniques for me were: shooting in very poorly-lit locations, shooting long exposures, and using ND filters. I also learned new Photoshop techniques that make pictures pop out more. Overall, the tour was an exciting experience and I have greatly benefited from it. I am not a tourist. I am a photographer!

shooting photo groupe tours

I stumbled across Inscape Photo Tours on one of my many internet searches – and am I ever thrilled that I did! Right from the first contact by email with my initial enquiry, Martin was attentive and helpful answering all of my many questions. And my experience on the tour itself was no different. The tour was extremely well organised and ran absolutely smoothly. I have no doubt about how much work was put in behind the scenes by Martin and his team to make sure things went according to plan – and everything did – making the tour an absolute pleasure to be a part of.

Not only did I learn an enormous amount about landscape photography and editing techniques under Martin’s guidance – I had an absolute blast! (Made even better by the awesome group I was on tour with:-). I would have no hesitation recommending Inscape Photo Tours to both beginner and experienced photographers alike – and I for one will definitely book another tour with Inscape.

Thank you Inscape!

shooting photo groupe tours

This was my first photo tour with Inscape tours and it won’t be my last. Everything was very organized. As traveling photographers, we didn’t have to think about anything but our camera gear. We had two guides (Martin, the owner) and Jan. Both were wonderful and always willing to help with any photography advice. On a couple of days, we had some local models which we got to photograph in various locations. We also received candid feedback during post-processing which is always helpful.

Martin had all the details worked out ahead of time and was quick to resolve any issues were encountered. Our tour was made up of solo travelers. We had a small group and everyone got along. Looking forward to joining about photo tour in the future!

shooting photo groupe tours

This trip was fantastic thanks to Martin’s great planning and enthusiasm. Every detail was well executed from the lodging to the photography locations. I did not know any of the participants beforehand other than Martin. The group was diverse, engaging and alot of fun. Everyone was willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for getting some great shots. Even when weather did not cooperate, there were plans for expanding our photo processing skills at every level. I would not hesitate to book another amazing tour with Inscape Photo Tours. Hopefully, soon.

shooting photo groupe tours

I was a bit nervous regarding the extent of the physical and extreme environmental challenges of photography in Iceland at this time of year.  However, Martin’s planning and attention to the details of the itinerary ensured a very enjoyable trip.   Each and every day was fun and filled with learning regardless of what the weather dished out. Both Martin and Jan were committed to making sure everyone came away with great photos and the knowledge to continue in their photography journey.  If we weren’t outdoors on a shooting adventure, we were indoors learning how to post process our photos to their greatest potential. Regardless of the level of ability, experience or camera equipment, everyone was equally inspired and encouraged by both Martin and Jan with genuine enthusiasm for our learning. I will treasure the memories of this adventure!

shooting photo groupe tours

“I had a wonderful experience of joining Martin and Jan on a recent Iceland photography tour. The entire tour was well planned, good accommodations, safe transportation and spacious cars for 2 small groups. Jan and Martin provided knowledgeable in photography as well as the locations for the best ways to get amazing shots. It was a pleasant, fun, a lot of memories photo trip, I enjoyed every moment!”

shooting photo groupe tours

Let me start off by saying that I learned so much from Martin of Inscape Photo Tours. I’ve been shooting landscapes for well over 10 years and have watched dozens of YouTube videos on landscape photography. But there is no substitute for going on a photo shoot with a knowledgeable and experienced photo guide.

I am well versed in the technicalities of my Nikon D850 but I’m lacking in the nuance of composition. I always thought that I had no control over the placement of elements in my viewfinder. Martin taught me otherwise. By making minor adjustments in position and/or camera settings, I was able to come away with some amazing photographs that were balanced and harmonious.

Regardless of you experience level (novice through advanced), Martin will work with you to get that compelling photograph. He will teach you how to look for leading lines, patterns, colors, and how to frame that shot. He’s very patient, he’s hands-on, and he’ll even work with you during post processing. I highly recommend Inscape Photo Tours with Martin Bišof. You will not be disappointed.

shooting photo groupe tours

This was our second photo tour with Inscape and just as before all details were nicely handled to maximize time for photography. Martin had great locations lined up for photo stops but also showed flexibility in some impromptu locations, one of which turned out to be amazing. Martin and Jan (often one of his guides) are both great photographers and helpful with issues that arise with cameras or gear.

They help with composition if needed or will just let you go off to shoot alone if that is what you prefer. They are both quite pleasant and fun to be around. We had a great time and have already signed up for another photo tour! Thanks guys!

shooting photo groupe tours

Hi Martin and Pedro. I am home now and showing my wife the pictures of our trip. I was very pleased with your tour and would recommend it to anyone considering on signing up.

It was a great group and I would definitely go on another trip!

shooting photo groupe tours

This Photo Tour with Martin was absolutely great! We did this in autumn, the colors of the fields and the woods were stunning. Under Martin’s guidance, I took incredible photographs, I never thought I would ever be able to shoot such beautiful pictures. Not only the autumn colors, the beautiful sights in Prague, Telc, and Cesky Krumlov, and Martin’s insightful photography advice made the tour a great success for me. A highlight was the (photographic of course) shooting of owls, a new experience, that also resulted in beautiful images.

Everything was very well organized, we stayed in excellent lodgings, and even had the occasion to taste Czech wines (which were excellent). Martin is an incredibly nice person, very patient and always in a good mood. I hope to join him on a photo tour again in the future. Thanks, Martin!

shooting photo groupe tours

I have booked 2 photo tours with Inscape Photo Tours, the first was the trip to Iceland and the 2nd one was to New Zealand. Both tours were extremely well organized. Both Martin and Jan are excellent in assisting the clients.

I had a fantastic time on both tours and can only recommend taking part in these tours. I am already preparing for the next on in Lofoten!

shooting photo groupe tours

What an incredible tour! I was able to get the most iconic shots I’ve been after for years. Each day was extremely well organized so that we were able to best make use of the light and location. Even when the weather wasn’t cooperating, there were contingency plans on what best to shoot so that no time was ever wasted.

Martin and Jan’s expertise and friendliness was over the top. Their unique ability to provide individual instruction on both composition and editing to photographers of various levels of experience was amazing. I’m thrilled having finished this photo tour with dozens of pictures I’m proud to hang on the wall and can’t wait to sign up for the next trip!

Thanks Inscape!!!

shooting photo groupe tours

Martin Is absolutely fantastic as a photographer tour guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the Czech Republic and therefore was able to take me to those great out of the way places I would never find on my own.

Martin’s goal was always for me to get the shot and he was extremely helpful when I had issues with some of my camera settings, even though he shoots Canon and I shoot Nikon. Martin is very talented, pleasant, and well organized. It was a joy to spend the week photographing with him and I intend to make a return trip during the Fall of 2024.

shooting photo groupe tours

Since my last trip with Martin and his crew at Inscape Photo Tours, and the wonderful people I was able to meet in Iceland. I was eager to make another one and it was on… Lofoten 2020 Wow such a blast having to meet all the same people and have one of my best time in my life with such a rich country with beautiful landscapes and vistas.

To me Inscape Photo Tours is not only about the actual photo tour and be able to be in front of outstanding landscape, it is about meeting with great people exchange knowledge and most importantly make friends with whom to spend more good times like this. Thank you all for the great time and experience, stay safe and well, for till our next photo tour <3

shooting photo groupe tours

10 days in Iceland with Inscape Photo Tour has been one of the great trips for me. Martin and Jan opened a door to post-processing world that I never knew could make your photos go from good to wow. Martin and Jan both are passionate about photography and same passion reflects in their exemplary efforts to make sure every participant became friends with their camera and lenses and had great pictures of Iceland. Visiting Ice cave was one of the coolest experiences for most of us on the trip. Thanks to Martin for going an extra mile to reschedule Ice cave tour with another company earlier than the planned one as weather was getting miserable.  As an added benefit, everyone in the group was enthusiastic and fun to travel with.

Iceland is beautiful country and exploring it with Inscape photography tour was a perfect fit. Now, whenever I take a picture whether phone or camera, I am always thinking “Have I clipped the highlights in the sky or how can I make this composition better” 🙂  Hope to explore another part of the world with Inscape Photo Tours in future.

shooting photo groupe tours

“Attending the workshop in Iceland 2017 with Inscape Photo Tours was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Jan and Martin are not only excellent photographers, but also great friends. They do much more than teaching you the techniques and art of photography. They know how to inspire and motivate the attendants. More than a group, it became a supportive team. I had lots of fun and I´ll never forget it.”

shooting photo groupe tours

My sister and I joined Martin’s trip to the Lofoten Islands to photograph the northern lights. The entire trip was very well organized – lodging, transportation, and some meals taken care of just as described, and the accommodations were all very nice.

The locations we visited were amazing and we got beautiful photos, including photos of the aurora! We really appreciated Martin’s local knowledge that allowed us to find the best locations for shooting depending on light and weather. One thing that made this trip extra-special was the one-on-one post-processing that Martin provided to help us organize and edit the many photos we were taking. I came home from the trip with amazing photos and an improved understanding of how to work with lightroom and photoshop to get the most out of those photos. I also really appreciated the small group setting and the amount of communication that Martin provided. We always knew what the plan was and what factors might cause us to re-evaluate the plan, such as weather. The whole group was able to provide input on what kind of photos we wanted to take and what techniques we were interested in learning about.

Overall an incredible trip and a great opportunity to improve my photography skills!

shooting photo groupe tours

I cannot recommend Inscape Photo Tours more highly. I met Martin after doing a morning photography class in Prague and was so impressed with him that I decided to come on one of his multi-day package trips. I am so glad that I did! My sister, who is a much better photographer than me, met me in Norway and we visited the Lofoten Islands, which were incredibly beautiful. We met up with the rest of our small group and our two guides and quickly formed some new friendships. Everything was organized for us so we really didn’t need to think much, which was great! All of our accommodation was really nice and also within proximity of insane views.

At first, I thought I wouldn’t be taking great photos because I am such an amateur, but with the help of Martin and our other guide Pedro I got the MOST AMAZING PICTURES! I can’t even believe I took them! Turns out when you have professionals teaching you how to take and edit photos, as well as chauffeuring you around to the best spots during the right times for the best light, you too can be an amazing photographer.

I learned so much and had a fabulous time. I will definitely be doing another trip with this company in the future. This was a once in a lifetime experience, and I am so thankful.

shooting photo groupe tours

We enjoyed the tour to Iceland so much that immediately signed up for the incoming tour to New Zealand with Inscape Photo Tours. Martin and Jan are very professionals. They have the ability to teach at all levels with patience and encouragement. I’m personally improving my photography techniques by capturing amazing images in some of the most incredible travel destinations under their direction. We are also happy that we had the chance to meet nice people, especially on the New Zealand tour. We had fun and unforgettable memories that will stay with us forever!

shooting photo groupe tours

Awesome, awesome trip! I had the pleasure to go to Lofoten Islands in Norway with Martin and Pedro this February ( 2023 ). It was a great experience! They were both very helpful and available at any time to help us with composition, technique, post-processing, gently critiquing our work and providing constructive criticism and always ready to answer any questions we might have.

Great atmosphere, a lot of good laughs. Accommodations were spot on, clean and simple. I will definitely book another tour with Martin at some point in the future!

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

moscow-impressions-cover

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

moscow-sf-19

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

moscow-sf-15

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

2. Museum Metro

shooting photo groupe tours

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

moscow-sf-18

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

moscow-sf-35

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

moscow-sf-45

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

moscow-sf-52

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

moscow-sf-30

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

moscow-sf-51

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

moscow-sf-42

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

moscow-sf-17

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

moscow-sf-26

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

moscow-sf-48

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

If any of you have been to Moscow before, tell me about your experience and impressions of the city and country in the comments below! And stay tuned for more on Moscow, including some of the best Street Photography shots I captured while there.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a 5-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

"I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her record-tying fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany's Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark's Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron , shooting 76-72.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-3 12th with the eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present."

Kyle Rittenhouse, deadly shooter, college speaker? A campus gun-rights tour sparks outrage

shooting photo groupe tours

Kyle Rittenhouse is not a typical college campus speaker.

In 2020, at the age of 17, he took an AR-15-style rifle to a Black Lives Matter demonstration and fired it, killing two people and injuring a third. Rittenhouse said he pulled the trigger in self-defense and was acquitted of wrongdoing .

He has since penned a book, “Acquitted,” and has set out on a series of college speaking events dubbed the " Rittenhouse Recap ." He is slated to appear Thursday at Clemson University in South Carolina.

Rittenhouse is selling books, and ostensibly promoting the right to bear arms on campus, but he’s also trying to persuade young people to join the conservative movement. The key group behind the appearances, Turning Point USA, is led by the self-described “youth director” of President Donald Trump’s first campaign and a key ally rallying votes for Trump this year.

The group told USA TODAY that it isn’t a nationally organized tour – that its chapters independently requested Rittenhouse. Student chapter leaders told USA TODAY that Rittenhouse is an important conversation starter. “I think sometimes you have to be kind of polarizing to pull a crowd," said Brady Seymour, president of Turning Point USA's chapter at Kent State University in Ohio.

The provocative choice of backing the Rittenhouse tour is par for the course for Turning Point and its local affiliates, which have hosted controversial figures like Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist and Holocaust denier . But it has stirred up devastating pain and disdain in a man he almost killed.

"He has used every moment to gloat and to make light of taking life," Paul Prediger said, speaking publicly for the first time about what happened in protest of a Rittenhouse speech last week at Kent State. "As if that were not enough, Kyle has embraced and been embraced by those who peddle hateful rhetoric, who believe in nationalism that excludes those who do not look like or think like them, and who have sought to amplify a troubling desire for violence against supposed political, cultural, and religious enemies."

Rittenhouse's message on his campus tour – that students should be allowed to take up arms, including to fend off "these Hamas, Palestinian terrorists" if they invade dormitories – has sparked protests and raised questions about free speech and just how far it should be allowed to go. A similar question helped lead to the resignations of the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University , who stepped down amid fierce criticism for equivocating when asked if calls for the genocide of Jews would be allowed on campus.

Rittenhouse, in a statement provided by spokesperson Jillian Anderson, said his campus appearances are not part of an official tour or book-selling venture, and he is reminding students of their rights. "Every American has a constitutional right to bear arms," he said, "and it should not be infringed by a college campus."

Experts say context matters. Tom Ginsburg, a law professor at the University of Chicago and faculty director of the forum on free inquiry and expression, told USA TODAY that federal regulations require colleges and universities to ensure their learning environment is not hostile. Within that framework, some incendiary language could be permitted in a general public space but prohibited if directed at an individual or group.

"That's a key distinction," he said. "Is it said in general, as part of a general demonstration, or is it shouted at a particular group of people who might then reasonably perceive it as being a threat of some kind? And if it's the latter, then it could be punished."

Kyle Rittenhouse says students should carry guns on campus

On the evening of Aug. 25, 2020 , Rittenhouse brought a rifle to the site of intense protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man. Amid a scuffle with protesters, Rittenhouse fatally shot Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounded Prediger.

In a trial that drew national attention in 2021, Rittenhouse said he shot the men in self-defense after Rosenbaum threatened his life and Prediger pointed a gun at him. Prediger said he thought Rittenhouse was an active shooter. Critics said Rittenhouse had no right to fire his weapon and was illegally acting as a vigilante militia. A jury acquitted him of all five charges he faced, including intentional homicide.

Rittenhouse soon took on celebrity status in right-wing circles where the right to bear arms and use them to defend life and property is sacrosanct. The weekend after his trial, he flew to Florida to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort and to appear on Fox News for an interview with conservative host Tucker Carlson.

At Kent State, Rittenhouse implored students to fight to be allowed to carry guns at school.

"We have these blue boxes that are on the campus – we've all seen them, you push a button, it calls the police, and you get connected to a dispatcher," he said. "How long does it take a cop to show up, though? When somebody is trying to kidnap you or somebody is threatening your life, is that the quickest option to be able to protect yourself?"

He encouraged students to join conservative groups like Turning Point USA and said elected officials don't care about them.

"What makes me really scared, and I get really upset that people, especially young campus students, aren't allowed to carry firearms, just because I'm scared that what happens if these Hamas, Palestinian terrorists come to the U.S. and try to attack us?" Rittenhouse said. "Are we supposed to be left defenseless? Are you supposed to be left defenseless because you're not allowed to have a gun in your dormitory?"

After Prediger – formerly known as Gaige Grosskreutz – criticized his speaking tour, Rittenhouse posted a video clip on X, formerly Twitter. It showed Prediger admitting he pointed a gun in Rittenhouse's direction before being shot. Rittenhouse did not include text in the post.

Students accuse Turning Point of 'hateful actions'

In the days leading up to his arrival at Kent State, demonstrators staged a walkout, organized a vigil, and spray painted "Welcome, killer" on a free-speech landmark. A Change.org petition urging the university and Turning Point USA to cancel Rittenhouse's visit gathered more than 3,700 signatures. The event spurred Prediger to speak out. Hundreds showed up to protest.

"I stand with the students of Kent State University who have had enough," Prediger said.

Students said it was particularly insensitive for the campus to host Rittenhouse and his message about guns on campus given the school's history. On May 4, 1970, four students were gunned down at Kent State when the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd gathered to protest the invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

Aimée Flores, a representative from the university's Spanish and Latine Student Association, said the organization encouraged students "to learn more about Turning Point USA.... their hateful actions on campus and throughout this whole year, why we don't agree with their actions."

Seymour, the school's Turning Point chapter president, said the event was about "creating conversation." It had no relation to the 1970 killing of protestors, he said.

"In his speech, he talked mostly about having the right to carry on campus, considering students aren't allowed to at Kent State," Seymour said.

"These two stories are completely different and 50 years apart," he said.

Protests at every campus on 'Rittenhouse Recap' tour

Other “Rittenhouse Recap” appearances prompted vocal opposition and protest.

At Western Kentucky University , protesters held a sit-in and march last month. His appearance at East Tennessee State University in February also sparked demonstrations – local press reports show one protester wielding a sign accusing Turning Point of empowering "stochastic terrorism" – the incitement of violence through public demonization of a person or group.

In the days leading up to Rittenhouse's appearance at The University of Memphis in March, the school fielded a barrage of complaints from students, faculty, and community members. Protesters held signs with messages like, “Put Rittenhouse behind bars, not a podium.” Rittenhouse abruptly left the stage after about 30 minutes as protesters shouted him down.

Universities said allowing the events – and the protests – upholds key tenets of American democracy and academic tradition: Free speech and freedom of assembly. Turning Point USA’s chapter at The University of Memphis is a registered student organization, the school said.

"We cannot ban speech because it would go against a core value and because of well-established laws governing free speech on public university campuses,” Kent State said in a statement provided to USA TODAY. “Upholding the First Amendment rights of free speech and peaceful assembly for all, the university has a long history of allowing peaceful dialogue from all points of view, including those whom some may feel are offering different and/or sometimes controversial opinions."

Turning Point has history of booking controversial speakers

Turning Point USA has a track record of booking controversial and provocative figures, placing it at the center of debates over First Amendment rights on college campuses, where it says it has grown to more than 800 chapters since its founding in 2012.

In late 2016 and early 2017, the group was behind a nationwide campus speaking tour by Milo Yiannopoulos – a former Breitbart writer banned from Twitter for harassment and dropped from the agenda at a Conservative Political Action Conference after videos surfaced of him defending sexual relationships between 13-year-old boys and grown men. Yiannopoulos said he was joking and may have used "imprecise language."

In 2019, Turning Point’s Iowa State University chapter claimed partial responsibility for extending a speaking invitation to Fuentes, a white nationalist who has said he wants a "total Aryan victory" and self-identified as a "sexist man," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Last year, representatives of the group confronted, criticized and assaulted an LGBTQ+ instructor at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Turning Point has taken action against members for promoting hate speech. In 2019, the group expelled a member at the University of Nevada Las Vegas after a video surfaced of the student shouting "white power" and using a white supremacist hand sign.

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, said the Fuentes event was not sanctioned, and a local chapter official was tricked into arranging the appearance. He said that Turning Points has repeatedly denounced white nationalism . Kolvet said that in general, students should be able to hear from controversial speakers. "We do our best to make sure that there's going to be enriching discussion, that the speaker is going to be, I would say, uplifting, inspiring, productive."

He said Turning Point chapters chose Rittenhouse as a speaker. "There just happened to be schools that asked for Kyle because he came out with a book and he made himself available, essentially."

Turning Point touts itself as a key player in conservative politics , as does its founder and president, Charlie Kirk , who told conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh 's show in 2019 that he “traveled the country for about 70 days straight carrying Donald Trump Jr.’s bags and getting his Diet Cokes.” In addition to becoming Trump Jr.'s "body man," he took on the role of "youth director of the campaign," Kirk said. Speaking at the Republican National Convention in 2020, he called President Trump the "bodyguard of Western civilization."

Kirk also speaks on college campuses, where his fiery rhetoric has sparked controversy. At a speech last fall at Missouri State University , he said all immigration to the U.S. should be halted, called global warming an "academic distraction," and speculated about how many Hamas sleeper cells might be active in the U.S.

Expert says universities grappling with non-academic provocateurs

Ginsburg stressed that colleges and universities must allow free speech. "It’s pretty clear that their obligation is to make sure that event goes forward and to make sure it's not disrupted," he said. "At the same time, peaceful protest also has a long tradition on campus."

Ginsburg said an added dimension to their challenges is the more recent phenomenon of campus speakers who intentionally draw negative attention.

"What we're now seeing is that people are sometimes getting invited to campus who aren't necessarily academics. They're not articulating a truly academic point of view," Ginsburg said. "In some cases, we have provocateurs, including some people who actually are seeking to be canceled, seeking to be protested."

He said people like Rittenhouse often capitalize on controversy. "He's certainly part of a media ecosystem in which you do have some of those kind of characters where, if you can get canceled, it ups your follower rate and you can portray yourself as a victim," he said.

To the Turning Point leader at Kent State, it's a tactic the group uses to advance conversation.

"That's the sad reality of how people are," Seymour said. "You kind of have to stir up drama or be a polarizing character for people to end up paying attention to you."
