Can Tho seems to be a bustling city, with a stream of commerce flowing continuously down the Hau River. But treat yourself to a room on its leafy banks, dine on its sun-ripened fruits and fresh river fish, glide on sampans through its sultry canals, and you’ll soon realize Can Tho’s big city facade is just half the story. The other half? Misty sunrises over the water, lazy afternoons swaying in a hammock, and balmy evenings announced by a chorus of insects. Under the Mekong Delta’s blazing blue skies, Can Tho leaves a vivid impression.

Famous for its countryside charm, Da Lat draws couples, wellness seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. Phu Quoc’s gleaming white sand beaches have earned it the nickname “Pearl Island”, but the island’s environmental conservation efforts and cultural heritage deserve as much attention as its picturesque sand and surf. Fishing and agriculture remain primary industries, and more than half the laid-back island has been protected by a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006.

Home to fish sauce, pepper, and pearls, Phu Quoc offers both luxury and local life, with clean water by day and clear skies at night.

Southern Vietnam - The economic and social heart of the country

To the east, bordering the China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, the South (in Vietnamese means Nam Bo) is a multifaceted region. This region is also known as the breadbasket of Vietnam, as it brings 40% of food production to the country.

Boat on Mekong River

Boat on Mekong River

The administration of the South divides into 2 main parts:

Southeast – 6 provinces Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Binh Dương, Đong Nai, Ba Ria–Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City.

Mekong Delta – 13 provinces Long An, Dong Thap, Tien Giang, An Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Soc Trăng, Bac Liêu, Ca Mau, Can Thơ.

Southern Vietnam begins from the Mekong Delta to the mystical Central Highlands of Vietnam with the fine white sandy beaches of Phan Thiet on the coast. Must-see sites on South Vietnam Tours include the floating market on the Mekong, the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh, elephant rides near Lak Lake, the mystical culture of ethnic minorities in the highlands of central Vietnam, the romantic city of Da Lat, the matriarchal village of Ede, the plateau of Buon Ma Thuot, the spice and rubber town of Pleiku, etc.

HOW TO ORGANIZE SOUTH VIETNAM TOURS?

1. best time to go.

south vietnam tours

Southern Vietnam has a hot and humid tropical climate. The region records the highest annual temperature in the country. The ideal time to go there is from November to March. The intense heat of April, May and June can bother some visitors. The monsoon from June to September is accompanied by heavy rains, but it is generally short.

It is possible to travel all year round in the south of our country. Otherwise, we would avoid planning any South Vietnam Tours during the rainy season. During this time of year, you should visit the center of the country, especially the beaches of Hoi An.

2. Best destinations to visit

Ho chi minh city:.

Economic pole of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is a dynamic city, overflowing with activity and life. It looks to the future while showcasing the architecture of its colonial past. Unlike Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City is no more than 4 centuries old. During your South Vietnam Tours, especially in Ho Chi Minh, you will cross the modern districts of the city center, the authentic alleys and vast shaded parks lined with colonial houses.

It is also a lively city at all times. You will observe its inhabitants practicing their daily sport in the squares of the center since the morning. During the day, the traffic will reach an impressive density. Later in the evening, the parks will be taken over by young people and street vendors. Ho Chi Minh is a city that we experience the most when we visit it. You will particularly notice the exploration of Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Reunification Palace, the Central Post Office. You can walk around Cho Lon or Binh Tay market. You will appreciate the colors of the countless kiosks and the eternal animation that reigns there.

It is also from Ho Chi Minh City that you can go to the Mekong Delta, the great pagodas of Cao Da or the Mui Ne seaside resort – the kitesurfing spot or even the resort town of the French during the colonial era. – Da Lat.

Mekong Delta

The mythical Mekong is divided mainly into nine essential arms (hence the name “river of the nine dragons” – Cuu Long given to it by the Vietnamese) and multiple tributaries to form a country of water, islands and islets.

The Mekong River originates in China and travels thousands of kilometers through Asia. It flows into the China Sea in southern Vietnam and forms a vast delta with hundreds of rivers, streams and canals. A circuit around the Mekong Delta offers as many natural discoveries as cultural visits. It crosses villages of farmers and fishermen in the middle of plains covered with rice fields and orchards. There are many waterways to reach the famous floating markets.

In addition, from the coast of Ba Tri to the Cambodian border at Chau Doc, you can meet several different ethnic groups (including Khmer or Cham) and different religions (Buddhist, Catholic, Caodaist, etc.).

>> Recommended tour : Southern Vietnam Sightseeing and Beach Relaxation for families in 9 Days

Comfortably installed on the shores of the China Sea, a trip to Nha Trang allows you to enjoy accommodation with various amenities and admire the landscapes of mountains and beaches bordering the islets. Nha Trang is one of the most famous resorts in Vietnam. To get there, the easiest way is to take a plane from Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh.

Nha Trang Beach

Nha Trang Beach

Nha Trang is the perfect place for a lazy break during your trip or to relax a bit at the end of your stay. You can access its main beach, but it mostly has stately resorts that don’t always offer the glamor and privacy one might ask for on a peaceful trip. Also, to find more exclusive addresses, it is best to deviate somewhat from the city center and reach the south of the main beach or the small neighboring bays. In these quieter places, you will find small structures and discreet and careful service.

South Vietnam Tours cannot miss a few seaside days in Phu Quoc to take advantage of an ideal setting to extend your circuit by extending it by the sea. The island is located in the south-west of the country, in the Gulf of Thailand, off the city of Ha Tien. It is accessible by ferry from the mainland, but we highly recommend arriving by plane. Indeed, the boats serving the island are not very comfortable and the travel time from Ho Chi Minh will be too long. Your holidays in Phu Quoc will make you discover the largest and most welcoming of the 22 islands that make up its archipelago. Its mountainous terrain is covered with thick tropical forests. Relatively far from the coast, Phu Quoc has crystal clear waters and a beautiful coastline, the most famous of which are the bays of Thom, Khem and Sao. Most of its coastline stretches along the west coast of the island. Some comfortable hotel addresses welcome you to enjoy the special landscape during your trip to Phu Quoc.

3. Best dishes to taste

A good trip cannot miss the local gastronomic discovery. From North to South of Vietnam, Vietnamese cuisine offers different flavors, alliances, combinations. Discover the rich cuisine of South Vietnam through some specialties not to be missed!

Banh Xeo – Vietnamese savory pancake

This crispy and delicious Vietnamese pancake is made with rice flour and turmeric. Stir-fry and fold in half, topped with thinly sliced or ground pork, shrimp and bean sprouts.

south vietnam tours

We eat “banh xeo” with mustard greens or salad leaves as well as herbs and sauces made from fish sauce. The “banh xeo” from southern Vietnam is distinguished by the addition of coconut milk to the batter.

Banh Canh is a dish not to be missed among the specialties of southern Vietnam. There are many versions of this dish such as “banh canh” with pork, duck, blood clot, beef dumplings, crab, shrimp and coconut milk… “Banh canh” has become popular in the delta and southern Vietnam.

This very popular dish, especially in Saigon, is made from broken rice grains, the cheapest type of rice produced during the threshing process.

south vietnam tours

Com Tam Saigon

This broken rice is served with thinly sliced roast pork and pork skin mixed with grilled rice flour, grilled pork loin or ribs, steamed omelette or fried egg and vegetables sweet and sour, minced cucumber. All are dipped in shallot oil and sweet and sour fish sauce.

“Hu Tieu” or the signature soup of Saigonnaise

Served in a large bowl, the noodle soup consists of a clear broth simmered with pork bones, vermicelli, pork, prawns and quail eggs. Like pho, Hu Tieu is the proper name for the type of rice noodles used as an ingredient for dishes in southern Vietnam. This type of rice clearly comes from the Mekong Delta and the paste is less thick. For “Pho”, seasonings have an elective place in the recipe, but for “Hu Tieu”, you have to add sweetness otherwise it will never be accepted by the people of South Vietnam!

south vietnam tours

Elephant ear fish

This is a Mekong Delta staple that will be served to you in a restaurant or on a river cruise. The fish is fried then served upright on a wooden grill.

Each guest cuts a piece of meat then places it in a sheet of rice, with a few lettuce leaves, mint and chopped vegetables. Then we make a small roll and dip in the sauce. It’s fresh, light and delicious!

I really enjoyed my trip. Our guide was very friendly and accommodating. Everywhere we stopped to eat was good. My only complaints were with the first hotel in Da Nang, which had a lot of insects, and the restaurant bathrooms of some of the places we stopped to eat. It was during the New Year holiday so options for restaurants were a bit limited. Other than that, great trip, beautiful country, friendly people everywhere.

Ho Chi Minh and Phu Quoc Island 7 Days 6 Nights

Good tour with a good balance of activities and free time. Food was great, as was the pretour service. The drive from Can Tho to Rach Gaia is a bit rough but was helped by the comfortable car and a nice coffee break. The tunnels are good and you get to choose between a good range of automatic rifles and heavy machine guns to shoot. I chose a m16 and an m60 but there is a carbine, ak47 and a couple of others. The ammo is very expensive though at 60,000 for 10 bullets. The war museum is one of the best parts, I learned loads and the traps and chemical weapons (agent orange) engaged my morbid curiosity. Great tour, I’d definitely recommend it!

What people love about 7 day southern vietnam tours.

We were very happy with the organisation and care shown by Hoi An Express, our leader and drivers
The folks at Legend Travel Group were terrific from the booking process through the amazing daily experiences in Viet Nam.
Booked a group tour well ahead and somehow it became a private tour on arrival in Vietnam. Were greeted at the airport by the driver (not much English) who got us to the hotel where we met the tour organizer Danny. He provided us with all the info and schedules. Very helpful!. Couple days in Hanoi were great with tours to see major highlights. Got lucky, no crowds, to see Ho Chi Min memorial. Hai Long Bay was amazing - one night cruise was great. Then great few days in Saigon with Mekong river cruise. Great guide Tin Tin in Saigon took care of all transportation and tours. We really enjoyed the trip.

This morning, we will visit Cu Chi Tunnels . At its height, the tunnel system stretched over 250 KM from Saigon to the Cambodian border and was three levels deep. The network included innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centers, and kitchens. Today the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience and a feel of what underground life during the U.S.-Vietnam American must have been like. We then return to Ho Chi Minh City and have free time at leisure.

I now refer my friends, family and colleagues, as well as book all of my tours, accommodation and flights with Maika because I feel very lucky to have finally found an organisation in Asia that gives me the confidence to do so.

The tour was very well organized, and the guide spoke very good English. We got to see and experience so many things: Besides visiting a pagoda and Buddha statue, we also went on a boat ride (with a stop to enjoy a coconut drink) and visited local businesses producing rice paper, conical hats and mats. We had fresh fruit and tea for a snack and Pho soup for lunch which was delicious! We had such a good day and would highly recommend this tour!

We went on this tour, two families of four, with children aged 9-12 years old. We were really happy with it and highly recommend. Lin was our guide and she was fantastic, would really do a trip with her again. It was nice to do this privately and easy to adjust with Lin if needed. Maika helped us book the accommodation in Can Tho which we really appreciated. Would highly recommend and for sure do again.

PaulSoltheran

You did a great job looking after all of our family of 7. The kids enjoyed all the tours and especially the Mekong cruise …as did we……because the kids were so happy we got to enjoy some time to ourselves too. I would recommend Maika Tours if your thinking of visiting Vietnam!

South Vietnam Itinerary: Where to go?

South Vietnam Itinerary: Where to go?

South Vietnam, where to see the beauty of modernity, excitement, yet tranquility and mystery. It is home to the most vibrant and largest metropolis of Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), a region of lush rice fields and tropical fruits – Mekong Delta and many untouched tropical beaches on paradise island – Phu Quoc. Other than that, historical landmarks, diverse culture, meandering waterways, floating markets and friendly local people… are what you can experience here. Let’s explore highlights of South Vietnam through Vietnam Travel’s suggested following itinerary which help you plan your Vietnam trip perfectly.

Table of Contents

1. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), 1-2 days

2. dalat, 2-3 days, 3. ben tre/ my tho day trip, 4. can tho, 1 night, 5. chau doc, 1 night, 6. phu quoc island, 3 – 7 days.

Being the Vietnam’s largest and most exciting metropolis with a prominent history going back hundreds of years, Saigon is very hectic, crowded, noisy, yet historic and interesting. Thanks to the country’s largest international airport – Tan Son Nhat, this city is usually a starting point of Southern Vietnam journey. You should spend a day to visit all key sites in the city such as War Remnants Museum, former Presidential Palace, Saigon Municipal Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office… If you are into learning about local daily life and bustling atmosphere, don’t forget to visit China Town (also called Cho Lon) and Ben Thanh Market for modern fashions, jewelry, CDs, luggage, and an array of local products. Fine Art Museum is also a must-see place, located in a beautiful colonial house combining French and Chinese styles; it presents a large collection of fine artworks from paintings to historical objects.

It is recommended to explore a famous historic monument – Cu Chi Tunnels on the second day, just 70km from Saigon city center. Cu Chi Tunnels was used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War (or “American War” as it’s referred to here) as protection against American air raids. Those inclined are invited to crawl through selections of the tunnels to better understand what life was like for the Vietnamese soldiers during wartime. This tour just takes you a half day, so you can combine this day with a cooking class in Saigon to know more about Vietnamese cuisine. At night, you can taste some traditional foods of Saigon and wander around Bui Vien Walking Street with a lot of bars and nightclubs to discover the city’s nightlife.

Just one hour flight from Saigon, you reach Dalat where you can feel 4 seasons in a day. This small city is an ideal escape from the heat of Saigon nearby and features on a series of green pine-covered hills, a silent small lake in the center, a set of flower gardens and French-style architecture.

Some famous places you cannot leave off when visiting Da Lat are Thien Vien Truc Lam – the largest Zen Monastery of Vietnam, Tuyen Lam Lake, the art deco former summer residence of Bao Dai – the last Emperor of Vietnam, Lat village – home to a number of distinct ethnic minority groups with varying traditions and beliefs… There is a big market centrally located where you can find a lot of local specialties and see the local’s daily life in a slow pace, in contrast with busy life in big cities.

Boat - a popular mean of transportation in Mekong Delta

Boat – a popular mean of transportation in Mekong Delta

From Saigon, you can take a day trip to My Tho or nearby Ben Tre with 2 hour driving. You have chance to visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, an ancient Southern gem with the combination of Asian and European architecture including Renaissance period and Romanesque. Take a boat trip on Mekong river for a glimpse at the delta scenery, visit fruit orchards, coconut groves, traditional workshops, and home-made products are must-do activities here to experience the unique lifestyle of the Mekong Delta. Besides, you may want to explore Vietnam’s “rice bowl” by cycling through the lush countryside and peaceful villages, meet the local people working on their water rice fields and learn about their local life.

Lying by the mighty Hau River, the southernmost tributary of the mother river Mekong, Can Tho is a delightful gateway to Mekong Delta. It is well-known for the busy floating market, called Cai Rang . The market begins in early morning, from 5am until midday but it is best to be here before 8am to see the busiest moments of the market on a motorized boat, a popular vehicle of Mekong Delta region. You then have chance to visit famous fruit orchards and sample the fresh, exotic fruit, venture deeper into the country-side, passing traditional houses made of wood and palm leaves as you observe the activities of the local people.

From Can Tho, you can drive to Chau Doc continuing your journey or back to Saigon.

Chau Doc is located in the northwest part of the Mekong Delta, close to the river border of Vietnam and Cambodia, about 250km west of Saigon and 120km from Can Tho. This little town is known for its beautiful scenery, cultural diversity and a transit point to Cambodia via Vinh Xuong river border crossing and Tinh Bien international border gate.

Some specialties are beef sausage, steamed palm sugar rice cake, Indica salad…

Phu Quoc is often chosen to be the ending point for relaxation after a long journey throughout Vietnam. The island is famous for its stunning beaches, untouched natural environment, the easy going and relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals. You can either lie on the beach, chill out at your resort or take part in a lot of interesting activities here such as swimming, sun bathing, boat-sailing, snorkeling, scuba-diving, etc. For those who are looking for something more adventurous, a walk along a park trail or motorbike ride in Phu Quoc National Park will give you memorable experience.

Ultimate Southern Vietnam Guide — 13 Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, and Mui Ne

south vietnam tours

Race over sand dunes, stuff yourself with the best local street food and take on Asia’s longest coaster — this is our complete guide to Vietnam’s best experiences in the South!

Dalat Tuyen Lam Lake Kayaking Tour Sunrise Drone Shot - South Vietnam Guide

During our last trip to Vietnam, we got to explore the central area (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) and we loved it. This time, we headed to Southern Vietnam to delve deeper and get to know Vietnam even better.

Phu Quoc Island Hopping Drone Shot - South Vietnam Guide

After exploring Southern Vietnam, I understand why it’s such a popular destination. Each city had something unique to offer — it’s almost like packing several mini trips into one.

Here’s our ultimate Southern Vietnam Guide — the best experiences in Ho Chi Minh , Da Lat , Phu Quoc and Mui Ne !

Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh Nguyen Hue Walking Street - Vietnam Guide

First up on our Southern Vietnam guide is Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon till 1975), Vietnam’s bustling capital and largest city. Ho Chi Minh was previously colonised by the French and still retains much of its European architecture.

The city is bursting with delicious food and rich history, and it’s also a good base to explore the rest of Southern Vietnam!

1) Day Trip to Cu Chi Tunnels

Cu Chi Tunnels Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh - Vietnam Guide

The Cu Chi Tunnels is a popular day trip from Ho Chi Minh city. I’d admit I didn’t know much about Vietnam’s history before the trip.

But our guide was very knowledgeable, and helped paint a clear picture of Vietnam’s milestones from her time as a French colony to the country’s independence!

Ho Chi Minh Day Trip Cu Chi Tunnels - Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh

The Cu Chi Tunnels is a 250km-long network of tunnels, used by Viet Cong troops (pro-communists in Southern Vietnam) during the Vietnam War to combat American soldiers! The Americans had more advanced technology, so the Vietnamese had to move underground to evade aerial bombing.

We walked through a small section of the tunnels and caught a glimpse of what it was like to be living in that era. Overall, the tour was really insightful — it’ll be useful to start your Vietnam adventure with this.

Mekong Delta Boat Tour - Vietnam Guide

If you’d like to extend the day trip, consider the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta full day tour ! This includes a local lunch and a relaxing boat ride down a canal off the Mekong Delta.

Cost: ~S$31/pax for a half-day tour Tour timings: 7:30AM – 12:30PM, 1PM – 6:30PM (Tour operator will confirm pick up timing the night before) Meeting point: Pick up from hotel

2) Explore Local Markets

Ho Chi Minh Ben Thanh Market Clothes Shops - Vietnam Guide

Markets are a way of life in Vietnam and the ones in Ho Chi Minh don’t disappoint. Ben Thanh Market is the city’s most well-known market, located centrally in the heart of district one. It’s a touristy spot, but still worth a visit if it’s your first time in Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh Ben Thanh Market Shops - Southern Vietnam Guide

You’ll find all sorts of things here — clothes, spices, souvenirs, and my personal favourite, a section dedicated to local food.

Ho Chi Minh Ben Thanh Market Noodles - Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh

There are several stores selling a variety of Vietnamese cuisine. We had barbecue pork noodles (60,000₫), beef vermicelli noodles (50,000₫) and fruit smoothies (30,000₫) — a satisfying meal for under S$10 total!

Ben Thanh Market Opening hours: 6AM – 8PM Address: Đ. Lê Lợi, Phường Bến Thành, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh 200 Market Night Market - Vietnam Guide

200 Market in district four came highly recommended by our Vietnamese guide. We arrived at a chaotic intersection of street food stalls — motorcycles constantly weaving through the crowds, hawkers barking out orders.

Be warned — it’s not catered to tourists, so menus are only in Vietnamese. Despite this, 200 Market turned out to be one of our favourite street food experiences in Ho Chi Minh!

Ho Chi Minh 200 Market Egg Omelette - Vietnam Guide

The language barrier turned into a game of “point at food and get surprised”, and we ended up loving every dish that came. Plus, eating on little red stools inches from the road is truly as local as it gets!

Ho Chi Minh 200 Market Streetfood Stall Barbecue Seafood - South Vietnam Guide

Dishes we tried include banh xeo (crispy Vietnamese shrimp omelette, 40,000₫), bahn mi (30,000₫), noodles (45,000₫), barbecue clams and snails (50,000₫/plate) — all pretty affordable.

*Pro-tip: Bring small change! The locals don’t enjoy having to break up large notes. Don’t use wet wipes if you don’t need them too — restaurants in Vietnam charge extra for it!

200 Market Opening hours: 5AM – 11PM Address: Nhà thờ, Xóm Chiếu, Phường 15, Quận 4, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh 70000, Vietnam

3) Visit Saigon Skydeck

Ho Chi Minh Skyline View from Saigon Skydeck - Vietnam Guide

Fun fact: The design of Bitexcon Financial Tower was inspired by a lotus, Vietnam’s national flower!

Ho Chi Minh Saigon Skydeck Bitexco Financial Tower - Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh

For unobstructed views of Ho Chi Minh, head up to Saigon Skydeck. It’s located on the 49th floor of the Bitexcon Financial Tower and has informative touch screens where you can learn about the city’s landmarks like the Sai Gon Central Post Office.

Cost: ~S$11.90/pax Opening hours: 9:30AM – 9:30PM (Last entry 8:45PM) Address: 36 Đ. Hồ Tùng Mậu, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

4) Sightsee at Nguyen Hue Walking Street

Nguyen Hue Walking Street Music Fountain - Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh

Nguyen Hue Walking Street is Ho Chi Minh’s main pedestrian street. It’s the heart of the city — both sides are lined with cafes and shops; at the end, there’s a lotus fountain centrepiece and the Ho Chi Minh government office.

We passed by both in the day and at night and the street really comes to life after dark. There are a few street performers and street food stalls too!

Ho Chi Minh Saigon Nguyen Hue Walking Street Cafe Apartments Exterior - Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh

Along Nguyen Hue, one particular building stands out. That’s The Cafe Apartments — a refurbished apartment building now housing several cafes and shops.

Ho Chi Minh Cafe Apartments Interior - Southern Vietnam Guide

We walked all nine floors in search of the most aesthetic cafe (they charge 3,000₫ to use the lift) and settled on Saigon Oi on the fifth floor.

This cafe has a minimalist interior and large windows with views of the walking street — great for people watching! Drinks start from 43,000₫.

*Pro-tip: Fork out the cash and pay to use the lift! We only found out after that most cafes reimburse the fee for customers.

Nguyen Hue Walking Street Entrance fee: Free Opening hours: 24 hours Address: 22 Nguyễn Huệ, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh 700000, Vietnam

Next up on our Southern Vietnam guide is Da Lat . It’s just an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh, but you’ll find completely different landscapes — mountains, lakes, and waterfalls!

Da Lat was once a summer getaway destination for the French, so a lot of the architecture here is European. Another reason to visit: Da Lat has a mild temperate climate, with average yearly temperatures of 20°C. Yes , we’d recommend packing a jacket.

Getting to Da Lat from Ho Chi Minh: 55min flight (from ~S$34 one-way)

5) Kayak at Tuyen Lam Lake

Dalat Tuyen Lam Lake Drone Shot - Best Things to do in Da Lat

Da Lat’s Tuyen Lam Lake looks like something straight out of Jumanji . It’s vast and tranquil, with plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. We went on a sunrise kayaking tour , where we got to watch Da Lat come to life in the wee hours of the morning.

Dalat Tuyen Lam Lake Kayaking Tour at Sunrise - Best Things to do in Da Lat

Waking up at 4AM was so worth it. After a quick lesson, our guide let us paddle out on our own for around 30 minutes to enjoy the sunrise. We had the entire lake to ourselves, apart from another couple on the tour — and it was an incredibly surreal experience.

Da Lat Forest Campsite during Tuyen Lake Kayak Tour - Best Things to Da Lat

Then, we kayaked down the lake to our breakfast spot. Breakfast was coffee and instant noodles — the perfect comfort food for the chilly Da Lat weather. We had our meal in a serene forest, before kayaking back to the starting point.

This tour was easily a highlight of our Southern Vietnam trip and in our opinion, one of the best things to do in Da Lat!

Cost: ~S$22.80 for a 3hr tour Tour timings: 5AM – 8AM, 8AM – 11AM, 2:30PM – 5:30PM Meeting point: Kayak Tuyen Lam Station (Hoa Cẩm Tú Cầu, Phường 3, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng 66115, Vietnam)

6) Take on Dalat’s Alpine Coaster and High Rope Course

Da Lat High Rope Course Adventure - Best Things to Da Lat

Conquer Da Lat’s high rope course adventure — seven areas of high elements obstacles! Visitors get a thorough safety briefing on how to attach the carabiners properly and navigate obstacles.

After that, it’s pretty much a do-it-yourself adventure. There were guides on standby, ready to assist when needed. Our favourite part of the course was the 200m-long zip line that goes through the forest!

Da Lat Datanla New Alpine Coaster Experience - Best Things to Da Lat

After that, take on Asia’s longest coaster trail, stretching for 2.4km! This ride isn’t for the faint-hearted — you’ll speed through scenic pine forests and experience sharp turns. Don’t worry though, there’s a brake to slow down if needed.

Cost: ~S$27.10/pax Opening hours: 7AM – 5PM (New Alpine Coaster), 8AM – 4PM (High Rope Course) Address: Prenn Pass, Ward 3, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province

7) Go Cafe-hopping

Da Lat Cabin in the Woods Drone Shot of Diners Enjoying Food - Southern Vietnam Guide

Another must-do in Da Lat is to tick off Instagrammable cafes with a view of mountainous landscapes. Like Cabin in the Woods , a rustic cafe filled with wooden furniture and fun photo spots!

This cafe is a hidden gem — the road there is narrow and more suited to bikes than cars. But trust us, the cafe is really pretty and worth the journey.

Da Lat Cabin in the Woods Drone Shot of Food Noodle Dish - Best Things to Da Lat

There are both Western and Asian dishes — we got tom yum noodles (50,000₫), sausage and fries (70,000₫), and a variety of drinks!

Cabin in the Woods Cost: From 50,000₫ (~S$3) for a main dish Opening hours: 7AM – 8PM Address: Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng Province, Vietnam 670000

They sell interesting desserts, like passionfruit cheesecake (55,000₫) and purple mousse (45,000₫) — which we enjoyed while taking in the views of the city.

Tui Mo To Cost: From 45,000₫ (~S$2.70) for a dessert Opening hours: 7:45AM – 9:45AM Address: Hẻm 31 Sào Nam, Phường 11, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng 66118, Vietnam

Step aside, Ha Long Bay , there’s another beautiful island paradise in Vietnam. This is Phu Quoc , Vietnam’s largest island — with a 150km-long coastline offering white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

Getting to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh: 1hr flight (from ~S$34 one-way)

8) Day trip to Phu Quoc’s Pristine Islands

Phu Quoc Island Hopping Drone Shot - Vietnam Guide

There’s no way we could visit Phu Quoc without seeing the islands. Our full-day island-hopping tour included trips to Fingernail Island, Gam Ghi Island, and May Rut Island.

Phu Quoc Island Hopping Gam Ghi Island Drone Shot of Snorkelling - Vietnam Guide

We went snorkelling at the first two, exploring reefs and a teeming marine life. Lunch was then served on board with seafood and hot soup, before setting off to the next island.

Girl on Boardwalk Phu Quoc Island-hopping - Southern Vietnam Itinerary

After expending our energy at the first two islands, May Rut Island was the chill respite we needed — we docked and spent around an hour exploring on our own.

There’s a gorgeous beach on the other side (accessible via a short hike!), with beach chairs for rent if you’d like a brief afternoon nap. Just note that the shore has some sharp rocks so thread into the waters carefully — someone lost their toenail here, just saying.

Cost: ~S$35.50 (incl. of lunch, snorkelling equipment) Tour timing: 8:30AM – 4:30PM Meeting point: Hotel pick up available

9) Take Photos at Sunset Sanato

Phu Quoc Sunset Sanato Face Art Installation - Vietnam Guide

Sunset Sanato isn’t just another beachfront resort. What makes it special is its collection of unique art structures, right by the ocean! It’s kinda like an outdoor museum, with art pieces designed by architect Nikita Marshunok.

Entrance fee: 70,000₫ (~S$4.20) Opening hours: 9AM – 9PM Address: Dương Tơ, Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

10) Tick off Thrilling Rides at Sun World Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Aquatopia Water Park - Best Things to do in Phu Quoc

Here’s another way to cool off — a trip to Aquatopia Water Park within Sun World Phu Quoc . There are six themed zones, and our favourite ride was Tropical Twister, a water slide with lots of twists and turns!

Phu Quoc Cable Car to Sun World - Southern Vietnam Guide

Getting to Sun World Phu Quoc is an adventure in itself — a ride on the world’s longest non-stop cable car. It’s 7,899m long and is the only way to get to Sun World! Along the way, soak in views of the An Thoi Archipelago.

Entrance fee: ~S$30.70 (incl. of round trip cable car ticket) Opening hours: 8:30AM – 5:30PM Address: Bãi Đất Đỏ, Phú Quốc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

Mui Ne White Sand Dunes Drone Shot - Best Things to do in Mui Ne

The last place on our Southern Vietnam guide is Mui Ne. Google Mui Ne and you might think you’re looking at photos of Dubai instead. It’s home to vast sand dunes — the perfect playground for adventure seekers.

Getting to Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh: 5hr bus ride ( from S$11 one-way )

11) Explore Red and White Sand Dunes

Mui Ne Red Sand Dunes Sandboarding - Southern Vietnam Guide

Book a private jeep tour to visit Mui Ne’s stunning sand dunes. First stop, the Red Sand Dunes. They’re a bright reddish-orange shade, and snake along the coast. Here, you can rent a board (30,000₫) to surf the sand dunes!

Mui Ne White Sand Dunes Couple Posing for Drone Shot - Best Things to do in Mui Ne

After that, it’s a roughly 30-minute drive to the White Sand Dunes. They’re the main attraction — a lot bigger than the Red Sand Dunes and more impressive. It costs a bit more (~S$24.60/group) to visit the White Sand Dunes, but it’s worth it — select it as an add-on when booking the tour!

Mui Ne White Sand Dunes ATV Rental - Best Things to do in Mui Ne

There’s the option to rent an ATV on the spot for 600,000₫ (~S$36) for 1 hour, which sits up to two guests! Unfortunately, there’s a staff member driving the ATV — but we got to steer it ourselves after giving a tip.

Cost: From ~S$31.70/jeep (up to 4 pax), incl. of round trip hotel transfer Tour timings: 4:30AM, 9AM, 1:30PM Meeting point: Hotel pick up available

12) Surf at Little Buddha Beach

Surfer at Mui Ne Beach - Best Things to do in Mui Ne

This might come as a shock — in a town that’s mainly known for sand dunes, surfing is also one of the best things to do in Mui Ne! At Mui Ne Local Surf School , both beginners and intermediate surfers can sign up for surf lessons.

Lessons take place at Little Buddha Beach , where kitesurfing is also popular. There are private and group classes available, as well as board rental (without lessons) for experienced surfers.

Cost: ~S$35/hr for a group lesson, ~S$28/day for board rental Opening hours: 6AM – 6PM Address: 246/2B Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, khu phố 3 Phan Thiet, Bình Thuận Province, Vietnam 800000

13) Walk Along Fairy Stream

Girl and Boy at Fairy Stream Attraction - Southern Vietnam Itinerary

Walking along the Fairy Stream is another popular thing to do in Mui Ne. It’s essentially a shallow stream nestled between bright orange and red limestone rocks! Most people take off their shoes to walk in the water — we did as well.

Mui Ne Fairy Stream Waterfall - Best Things to do in Mui Ne

At the end of the path, there’s a small waterfall. In total, the journey takes about an hour! There are also stalls along the way selling snacks and souvenirs.

Entrance fee: Free — but there’s a parking fee of 10,000₫ Opening hours: There aren’t any official opening hours, but we’d avoid going after 5:30PM when it starts to get dark Address: 40B Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, Phường Hàm Tiến, Thành phố Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận, Vietnam

Planning a trip to SE Asia and wondering where to go in South Vietnam? Here are 5 unmissable destinations, plus recommended activities & accommodations.

Best time to visit Southern Vietnam

The weather patterns for Vietnam are quite unique to each region. In general, the best time to visit Southern Vietnam is from November through until April. This is Vietnam’s high season, and it is the time when you’ll get the best weather across the southern portion of the country.

That being said, the central region of Vietnam, from Hue along the coast to Mui Ne, will be warm and dry for most of the year, although you may find it quite humid in July and August, and wet from then on. From April onwards, the far south, including Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Phu Quoc, become humid and wet.

Phu Quoc has a monsoon season, and if you don’t intend to sit in a hotel room, it’s best to avoid Phu Quoc from May to September.

A richly decorated gateway, part of an imperial tomb complex, surrounded by leafy trees.

The city of Hue was home to the last Vietnamese Imperial Dynasty, from 1802-1945, when Emperor Bao Dai abdicated the throne.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Imperial Citadel is the main draw card today, with millions of travellers visiting each year.

What to do in Hue

The Imperial citadel was the home of the last Emperor and the seat from which he governed. Inside the Imperial Citadel, the Imperial City encompasses many shrines, temples and buildings including the Forbidden Purple City.

The Forbidden Purple City is the inner most city, a private sanctuary for members of the Royal Family.

Scattered throughout the city of Hue are the tombs of previous Emperors. The best tombs to visit in Hue are the tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh.

Khai Dinh’s tomb in particular is stunningly beautiful, showing his extravagance.

Hue off the beaten path: How to visit the abandoned dragon water park.

The Perfume River runs through Hue and is used to fill the moat surrounding the Imperial Citadel. The river is so named because of the flowers from orchards up river that fall into the water in autumn. The river offers a beautiful stroll along the promenade beside it.

During the Nguyen Dynasty, as home of the Emperor, Hue had some of the best cooks in the country, and some delicious dishes are still local delicacies. Try some Bun Bo Hue, or Banh Beo, a steamed rice cake with topping, usually pork and prawn.

Where to stay in Hue

For accommodation, try Anh’s Homestay which offers a shared lounge and garden and free WiFi, or the Tam Family Homestay , which is within walking distance of the Imperial City.

A woman rides a bicycle past a row of yellow buildings in Hoi An, Vietnam.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed town of Hoi An is about 120km south of Hue, on the Vietnam coast. Known for its architecturally and historically significant sites, arts and crafts and beautiful beaches, Hoi An is an unmissable stop on a tour of Vietnam.

  • Travel from Hue to Hoi An by train via Danang (3 hrs; $8), by direct bus (5 hrs; $6) or by taxi (3 hrs; $75). Check prices and reserve tickets on Bookaway .
  • View my full Da Nang to Hoi An transportation guide .

What to do in Hoi An

Hoi An’s Old Town was a bustling trading port between the 15th and 19th centuries, with spices and ceramics being traded with the rest of Asia.

Traditional old houses and businesses can still be seen lining the Thu Bon River while cobblestone paths and small alley ways are lined with craft and textile shops. Colourful Vietnamese Lanterns adorn the streets and light the way at night.

Take a day to relax and wander the streets of the Old Town, and at night, visit the many restaurants and bars that line the river. If you’re visiting Vietnam with kids , your children will love a trip in the bamboo boats or a hands-on rice farming experience.

If you’re looking for local dishes to try , Cau Lao is a delicious noodle dish from the region. Banh Mi Phuong, made famous by Anthony Bourdain, really does have the best Banh Mi in Vietnam in our opinion.

For a little culture in the Old Town, the Precious Heritage Museum is a must. A huge collection of photos and traditional costumes from many of Vietnam’s minority tribes line the walls of this amazing museum.

French photographer Rehahn spent five years photographing most of Vietnams 54 Ethnic groups and the resulting images are incredible. Some of the traditional outfits inside the museum are the only ones left in the world.

Another cultural attraction most often visited from Hoi An is My Son , the ancient Cham ruins. Not quite as spectacular as the Cambodian temples of Angkor , My Son is still worth a visit if you’re in Vietnam.

The Champa Kingdom existed between the 4th and 14th centuries, with the buildings of My Son constructed over those 10 centuries. Unfortunately, they were damaged during the Vietnam war and only 17 of the 71 original structures are still standing.

Just outside Hoi An is An Bang beach, one of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches. Relax on a beach chair sipping coconut or explore the A Bang tourist area where you’ll find plenty of resort style accommodation.

For the green thumb, the Tra Que farming village lies between Hoi An town and An Bang. Wander the fields and see traditional methods for growing vegetables, or join a farm tour.

3. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

A brick church with a statue of Mary at the front and high-rise buildings in the background.

The dazzling, frantic city of Ho Chi Minh is the most populous and most visited city in Vietnam. A mix of history and heritage, and modern urbanisation it is easy to get lost in the fast pace and overwhelmed by the surroundings.

It takes a special kind of nerve to cross the street for the first time, and yet the city draws you out, calling you to explore.

Ho Chi Minh City was formerly known as Saigon, and the more you explore the southern portions of Vietnam the more you’ll hear it still referred to that way. It was the capital of South Vietnam and the home of the government until the end of the Vietnam War.

  • Travel from Hoi An to Saigon by overnight train via Danang (18 hrs; $38), by overnight bus (22 hrs; $21) or by plane (1.5 hrs; from $24). Check prices and book tickets on Bookaway .

What to do in Ho Chi Minh City

Visits to the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels are a great way to learn a little about Vietnam’s history and the Vietnam War. The view points here are naturally a little one sided so it helps to take away the bigger picture rather than some of the details.

Some parts of the War Remnants Museum are particularly disturbing while the Cu Chi Tunnels is undeniably interesting.

The Reunification Palace or Independence Palace, was the home and office of the South Vietnam President during the Vietnam war, and technically also where the war ended, as North Vietnamese Tanks broke through the gates. Kept in its original state the Palace is beautiful and a fascinating insight into design of the era.

One of the most beautiful pagodas to see in Ho Chi Minh City is the Jade Emperor Pagoda. A Taoist pagoda with hundreds of Tao and Buddhist deities, both beautiful and horrifying, lining the walls. Inside an inner sanctuary is the Jade Emperor, surrounded by a swirl of incense.

For dinner, the Benh Tanh Street Food Market is an enormous market of food stalls with food from every continent. A selection of Vietnamese and Asian delicacies, fresh seafood, desserts and local beer, you can eat until your heart is content.

One of the beautiful things about Ho Chi Minh City is that in the middle of all the madness, there are parks. Green, quiet, peaceful sanctuaries where you’ll find locals sitting around, or maybe doing Tai Chi. If the hustle and bustle get too much, you’ll find solace inside these areas, including one of the most popular, Tao Dan Park.

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

The backpacker and main tourism district of Ho Chi Minh City is the Pham Ngu Lao ward, in District 1. In the centre of this area, off Pham Ngu Lao is Baoanh Hostel , close to the restaurants and bars but in a quieter street.

On the opposite side of the Saigon River, District 3 is known for its colonial architecture. It’s also close to many of the usual tourist sites such as the Ben Thanh Market. The Hello Saigon Homestay is in a great District 3 location.

Men unload watermelons and other fruit at a floating market in Can Tho, Vietnam.

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and the fourth largest city in Vietnam. It is the perfect mix of traditional Vietnamese culture and lifestyle and modernised tourist infrastructure, managing to maintain a relaxed, local feel while catering to the many Mekong Deltas visitors.

  • Travel from Saigon to Can Tho by bus (4 hrs; $8) or private taxi (3 hrs; from $109). Check prices and book tickets on Bookaway .

What to do in Can Tho

One of the highlights of Can Tho is a boat tour of the Cai Rang Floating Markets. Hundreds of boats filled with fresh produce meet in the centre of the Hau River to trade their goods with travellers and other Vietnamese alike.

While it’s interesting to see the Cai Rang Floating Market, the real highlight is taking a tour that takes you down the picturesque back canals of Can Tho. Generally, a 3-4-hour tour will include the Cai Rang market only, as it is about a 45-minute boat Ride from Ninh Kieu wharf where the boats leave. Book a longer tour to see more of Can Tho’s rural river life.

Aside from floating down the river, there are plenty of interesting temples in Can Tho. The Ong Temple is right near Ninh Kieu Wharf. A couple of kilometres away is the Binh Thuy Temple which is also worth a visit.

About a kilometre from the Binh Thuy Temple is the Binh Thuy Ancient House. The house has been in the Duong family for six generations. The inside of the house is like an amazing antique store, filled with all kinds of pieces featuring both French, Chinese and traditional Vietnamese design.

At night, the boardwalk along the river and Ninh Kieu Wharf is the place to be. There are some bars and restaurants opposite the water, and the boardwalk will take you along the river down a lit path past some beautiful gardens and nice resorts.

5. Phu Quoc Island

A green house on a sandy beach with tall palm trees in the background.

Phu Quoc is located at the bottom of southern Vietnam. A large island with beautiful beaches Phu Quoc is fast becoming the Resort capital of Vietnam. Not untouched by tourism, and rubbish, it can be a little disheartening however there is plenty of Phu Quoc to celebrate and enjoy.

  • Travel from Can Tho to Phu Quoc via Rach Gia by bus + ferry (5.5 hrs; $25). Check prices and book tickets on Bookaway .

What to do on Phu Quoc

One thing you can’t miss on Phu Quoc are the beaches. The most popular beach is Long Beach as it is lined with accommodation options and is near the centre of town. Sao beach is also a popular option, although very busy. If you’re after quiet seclusion, Cua Can or Vang Bau are lovely.

Another great beach is Rach Vem, or star fish beach where the sand is covered with star fish at low tide. It’s great to see them but remember not to lift them out of the sea. The water around Phu Quoc is fairly flat, and very warm. It’s the perfect way to spend a few days.

The An Thoi Marine archipelago are a series of islands off of Phu Quoc that form a marine reserve. You can take a boat trip out to the islands to go snorkelling . The calm clear water provides great visibility.

The Dinh Cau Night Market is where you’ll find delicious local dishes and plenty of sea food, just caught in the waters further off Phu Quoc Island. You’ll also find some of the more unusual Vietnamese foods on the menu.

For something a little more relaxed and natural, the Phu Quoc Eco Lodge is within walking distance of both Cua Can and Ong Lang beach, but still only 10km from the Duong Dong Night Market.

There are so many wonderful places to go in Vietnam, you could easily spend years travelling through the country and not see half of it! These places to visit in south Vietnam will give you a great feel for the country and take you to some of it’s most fascinating locations.

Where to go in south Vietnam: Pin it!

Ver Interesting information. I plan to visit Vietnam in November. I have not yet booked though as friends have told me that the weather is not kind for tourists until January onwards

What a great article! We’re currently dreaming of going to Vietnam again – we’ve been there before and we love, love love it! Here’s to a year with loads of travel plans and new experiences!

– Veronika

This was an interesting article, with lovely detail and it summarised the must see’s really well, I found it by chance researching my holiday for next summer. I was shocked however that you have an affiliate link to Kiwi.Com. This is a disingenuous company that have ripped many many people off using Covid as an excuse, flights were cancelled due to Covid and they haven’t processed refunds and don’t respond to messages. It’s disappointing that you don’t research companies before associating with them and I urge that you don’t recommend them any longer to save others taking your recommendation and being thousands of pounds out of pocket. If any readers of this blog are thinking about using Kiwi, don’t just take my word for it, I urge you to research them, look at TrustPilot, their FB pages, Google reviews.

Hi Audrey, thanks for your comment. I can assure you that I do my best to thoroughly research all companies I recommend, but this was an oversight on my part. I have not had a chance to follow up on these SE Asia articles post-pandemic. Very sorry to see that Kiwi has gone downhill. I will not be recommending them again.

Have a wonderful trip to Vietnam!

I enjoyed this article and share your travel experiences and the destinations you describe. Saigon is a bustling city with a sea of motorbikes. Phu Quoc was beautiful and enjoyed my beachfront property. Hospitality was wonderful in both destinations and the locals were welcoming. The War Museum us absolutely one-sided…tourists beware, it is not for the faint of heart. Cu Chi tunnels are interesting and the ride to and from are definitely worth experiencing.

Terrific suggestions, thank you Artrice!

This is really helpful for my upcoming trip this December. Can’t wait to visit this beautiful country! Thank you very much for your post.

You’re welcome Michelle! I hope you get to visit South Vietnam 🙂
