Since 1991 Star Clippers Ltd. has offered sophisticated travelers the ultimate cruising vacation alternative – a tall ship “mega-yacht” experience aboard authentic re-creations of the classic sailing clipper ships that ruled the waves during the 19th century.

The brainchild of Swedish entrepreneur, Mikael Krafft, Star Clippers operates three of the largest barquentine and full-rigged sailing ships in the world. Star Clipper, Star Flyer and flagship, Royal Clipper are a triumvirate of four and five-masted sailing ships that offer the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht.

The parent company of Star Cruises is Genting Hong Kong (formerly Star Cruises Limited). Star Cruises’ sister brand is Norwegian Cruise Line. Together they are the third largest cruise operator in the world behind Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL).

Star Cruises was incorporated in 1993 and has been cruising in the Asia-Pacific region long before it was trendy for the other cruise lines. Their fleet of luxurious mega ships are mainly ex-Norwegian Cruise Line vessels, meaning that they share many of the same features such as children centers and lots of dining options. Star Cruises is currently refurbishing the ex-Norwegian Dream for re-launch in 2013 with the new name, Superstar Gemini.

Star Cruises recruit prospective crew exclusively through its crewing manager, Strada Maritime Corporation and Martley Shipping Inc. Deployment is processed through regional crewing agencies in mostly Asian countries.

The company provides casual, active cruises aboard nineteenth-century clipper replicas sailing ships to unusual destinations in the Caribbean, South Asia and Mediterranean. Among the sailing ships cruise lines, Star Clippers is intended to fit between budget priced Windjammer Barefoot Cruises and pricey Windstar Cruises. Typical passengers are half from the Americas (U.S., Canada, Latin America) and the other half from Europe. They are active travelers, seeking adventure and off-the-beaten-track itineraries, not interested with casinos and night clubs. The man at the helm of Star Clippers is Mikael Krafft, a Swedish entrepreneur who, at the age of 6, landed his first job at a shipyard near his home in the Stockholm archipelago. As a child, Krafft listened to the stories the old seamen told, and his love of sailing was born. When he was 12, he sailed his own 18-foot boat over 20 miles of open seas. Later, he practiced maritime law in Sweden and France. In 1986, Krafft relocated to Brussels where he founded the White Star Group, involved with real estate development. White Star Group is the parent company of White Star Clippers, which commissioned Star Flyer and Star Clipper. Krafft launched the Star Flyer and Star Clipper in 1991 and 1992 in Belgium. They were the first clipper ships since 1911 to be granted the certificate of highest quality by Lloyd's Register of Shipping. The even more ambitions Royal Clipper was launched in 2000, the largest clipper ship built in a century.

On the employment side, these ships offer limited number of positions. Casino and entertainment departments staff should be looking for jobs with other cruise lines. On the other hand, working onboard a tall ship will be a blast for the right people.
