Star Trek: Prodigy

  • View history

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [6]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [7]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [8]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [9]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [10] [11] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [12] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [13]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [14]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [15]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [20] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [21]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [22]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [23]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [24]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [25]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [26]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [27]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [28]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [29]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [30] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [31]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [32]

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [33] The series removal from Paramount+ was effectuated three days later, on 26 June 2023. [34] The series was on Nickelodeon already on a broadcast hiatus, and therefore not to return afterwards. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the completely unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". The decision to place Prodigy outside the realm of that same franchise and offer it up to third-party outsiders however, was counter to their " Star Trek Universe" all-under-one-roof franchise umbrella concept instituted at the start of 2021 . [35] [36] [37]

On 21 July 2023 , showrunner Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Up until that point only the first ten episodes had been available, which was conforming to the recent physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [38] While the franchise had intimated that the series had not performed to expectations, Prodigy had managed in the meantime to gather a fanbase of its own, which had resulted in a run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement, causing them to sell out quickly in the home market. [39]

Aside from that, this fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [40] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [41] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [42]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [43]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premier in 2024 , [44] [45] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December. [46] [47] A consequence of this is that if Hageman is to see his hopes for post-season two productions come true, he has to convince Netflix to pay for the entirety of the production costs, as the franchise itself has distanced itself from Prodigy . [3] This could turn out to be a tall order for Hageman, considering Netflix's prior experience with the first three seasons of Discovery (see: Netflix: Footnote ), despite Prodigy hardly having caused any division within " Trekdom ", if any at all, as opposed to Discovery .

One such market concerned the Netherlands and Flanders, where the in the Dutch language dubbed version of the show debuted for an one-time run on the local Nickelodeon Benelux channel on 18 April 2022 , albeit the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) only. [1] Repetitive regular airing of the entire first season started on 31 October 2022 in support of the local Paramount+ encompassing SkyShowtime which had been launched in the country six days earlier, and where Prodigy was included in its startup content catalog.

  • ↑ There was very little doubt left, if any at all, that the franchise had no intent whatsoever to pay even a single penny more for Prodigy beyond the season two post-production completion, after they had taken their definitive leave of the series in their official statement, "Star Trek: Prodigy will not be returning for the previously announced second season. On behalf of everyone at Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and CBS Studios, we want to thank Kevin and Dan Hageman, Ben Hibon , Alex Kurtzman, and the Secret Hideout team, along with the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work and dedication bringing the series to life. Star Trek: Prodigy: next episode, trailer and everything we know about the Star Trek animated series

Star Trek: Prodigy is the latest Paramount Plus original set in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Paramount Plus has become the home of all-new Star Trek content, and the animated kids’ series Star Trek: Prodigy is one of the biggest new hits from the ever-expanding Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Prodigy joins Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Short Treks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the Paramount Plus streaming service. What makes it stand out from its sister series is that it is specifically geared toward a younger audience, a first according to Paramount Plus.

Information on Star Trek: Prodigy and all of Paramount Plus’ Star Trek series was shared during the September 2021 Star Trek Day presentation , but if you want to find out about everything you need to know about Star Trek: Prodigy , read on below.

The next episode of Star Trek: Prodigy is the mid-season premiere, titled "Asylum." There's no episode description yet, but we'll add one here as soon as it's available.

What’s the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future.

The series starts off with the young aliens working in a scrap yard where they stumble upon an abandoned Starfleet ship. Though they know nothing about space travel, together they set off on an adventure that will introduce them to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy , which will feature 20 episodes in its first season, split into two segments, was created by Dan and Kevin Hageman.

Who is in the Star Trek: Prodigy cast?

The main voice cast for Star Trek: Prodigy consists of Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as The Diviner, Jimmi Simpson as Drednok and Kate Mulgrew, reprising her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager , who appears in the series as a hologram on the ship.

IMDb lists a number of other actors expected to provide their voices to the series. This includes Jason Alexander, Jameela Jamil, Daveed Diggs and Robert Beltra, another Star Trek: Voyager alum reprising his role as Captain Chakotay.

When is the Star Trek: Prodigy release date?

Star Trek: Prodigy premiered on Paramount Plus on Oct. 28, 2021, releasing the first 10 episodes. The second half of the season premieres October 27, 2022.

We also know that there will be more of the animated series beyond that, as Paramount Plus has already renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for season 2 .

Is there a Star Trek: Prodigy trailer?

Here's the trailer for the midseason premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy.

Part of the Star Trek Day presentation back in September included the first official trailer for Star Trek: Prodigy . In it we get to briefly meet the teenage aliens that will comprise this makeshift crew and the beginning of their adventures. Watch the full trailer below.

How to watch Star Trek: Prodigy

Though Star Trek: Prodigy is produced in part by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the series is a Paramount Plus original and therefore will play exclusively on the streaming service, which means you’ll need a subscription to watch.

In addition to Star Trek: Prodigy , a Paramount Plus subscription also gives you access to all of the other Star Trek series created for the streaming service, as well as the classic TV series that initially ran on TV.

Paramount Plus also provides access to thousands of other TV shows and movies, both classic and originals.

How to watch Star Trek: Prodigy online — release date and time and more

Janeway returns when we watch Star Trek: Prodigy

The animated cast of Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy's hour-long premiere episode debuts on Thursday (Oct. 28). We expect it to arrive at 3 a.m. ET / 12 a.m. PT.

It's Janeway season once more when we watch Star Trek: Prodigy online. Yes, the Voyager captain is back, but this time in hologram form. The Paramount Plus series is about to make its debut, and it looks to introduce Star Trek to a much younger audience, as the cast is primarily composed of teens and children.

This new crew, which will helm the U.S.S. Protostar is apparently led by the 17-year old Dal (voiced by Brett Gray), who is of an unknown species. The rest of the cast includes Gwyn (voiced by Ella Purnell), a Vau N’Akat raised on a mining planet, Zero (voiced by Angus Imrie) is a non-corporeal genderless lifeform, the 8-year-old Brikar Rok-Tahk (voiced by Rylee Alazraqui), Murf (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), a hungry and adorable blob who cannot be destroyed and Jankom Pog (voiced by Jason Mantzoukas), a 16-year-old Tellarite.

  • We've tested the best streaming devices
  • The best Netflix shows and series

In that cast, you've already recognized some notable names, including Baker (who's voiced characters in everything from Avatar: The Last Airbender to Star Wars : The Bad Batch to American Dad!) and Mantzoukas (co-star of The League and voice actor in Big Mouth and Invincible). And on top of that, yes, we've got Kate Mulgrew back in the Trek-world.

The series starts off in a cold, desolate way, but hope comes in the form of a giant ship, the U.S.S. Protostar, which is where hologram Janeway lives. Of course, this ship isn't their property, and the rightful owner of it looks like an angry felllow, and wants their vessel back.

Listen up, Trekkies, we’ve got some prodigious news to share.

Star Trek : Prodigy , which was canceled by Paramount+ ahead of its second season premiere, has found a new home on Netflix. Season 1 will hit the streamer later this year, while the never-before-seen Season 2 will debut sometime in 2024.

Cancelled Shows Saved

Adds Kate Mulgrew, voice of Admiral Janeway, “I’ve always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world.  They have shown their collective passion, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again.”

When the show was originally canceled in June, co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke told fans via X (formally Twitter) that the Prodigy team was “completing Season 2 on schedule and seeking a new home,” adding, “Everyone on the cast and crew loves  Star Trek: Prodigy  deeply.”

Per its official logline, the younger-skewing animated series “follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered — a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise — but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”

Along with Mulgrew, Star Trek: Prodigy ‘s primary voice cast includes Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as The Diviner and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok.

Recurring voices include Daveed Diggs as Commander Tysess, Jameela Jamil as Ensign Asencia, Jason Alexander as Doctor Noum, Robert Beltran as Captain Chakotay and Billy Campbell as Thadiun Okona.

+1 for Netflix

At first glance I thought that was an animated picture of Matt Gaetz.

Now I am not canceling Netflix.

Hmm… condiering it’s Netflix, it’s questionable if we’ll get anything beyond season 2. But I guess we should be happy for whatever we can get.

Yeah, I can’t imagine the deal would actually allow them to make more than what has already been produced. It’s weird enough that a Trek show will be airing on another network – Paramount has worked hard to collect them all on P+. But if it does well enough on Netflix, maybe Paramount will have second thoughts and buy it back.

Indeed. Even if it goes no further—which I presume will be the case—2 seasons is better than 1. 🖖

If the show meets expectations on Netflix they could order further seasons. Generally speaking Netflix won’t be picking the show up with the view two seasons and done. They’ll want more if there’s demand from their subscribers.

And generally aren’t they know for three seasons for most shows?

Their animated shows go on for longer usually. Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous had 5 seasons, and has a sequel series out next year, which will be at least two seasons.

Best news I’ve read all day!

YES! I confess I put off watching what looked like “kiddie Trek” for a long time… but I was pleasantly surprised by how it developed and its links to the franchise (particularly Voyager). Just in case anyone is still on the fence…

So Paramount+, which promised to be the home of all things Star Trek, unceremoniously dumped their own IP, is now sharing Star Trek with their much wider-reached arch-rival Netflix. The same Netflix, where Paramount spent money to buy back some international streaming rights of Star Trek when they were launching Paramount+ internationally as the home of all things Star Trek… Business nonsense aside, I’m so happy for all the creative teams who worked on Star Trek Prodigy! They didn’t deserve the poor treatment from Paramount, I’m glad they get a wider audience with Netflix.

lol. you know if not for netflix. we would not have most current star trek content. due to netflix was back end funding new shows .up till recently.

There was no new Trek during the time those shows were on Netflix. Discovery was the first new one since Enterprise, which pre-dated Netflix streaming. How did Netflix in anyway contribute to new Trek content prior to picking up Prodigy?

They aired all the treks and movies pre paramount/cbs plus, ds9 and voyager were part of netflix till a few years ago

ST Discovery was heavily funded by Netflix and Netflix had exclusive international right sand CBS all access or Paramount + had like North American rights

Awesome 😁 so glad Netflix picked it up. Paramount was stupid to cancel it seeing as they have the other Star Trek shows. Don’t have Netflix but I’ll get it once Season 2 drops!!!

When Prodigy started, there was a plan announced that the first run would be on Paramount+ (All Access then), and there would be a later second run on Nickelodeon.

The first 10 episodes did air on Nick.

Any word on whether this deal prevents a second run of the remaining episodes on Nick at some point?

Nick cancelled Prodigy as well. that was not only paramounts doing

Not this deal, but at the writeoff time it was stated the show wouldn’t be returning to Nickelodeon

So grateful to Netflix for this. I love this show. It’s my favorite of the new Star Trek shows (though I do enjoy them all to varying degrees). Hopefully it’s successful enough to get a 3rd season, but even if it’s not, I’m just happy we’re actually be able to see this season.

I wonder what this means for a home video release? I love having Star Trek Blu Rays on my shelf, but Netflix is known for being pretty stingy will allowing that.

Um first season already is out on dvd and I’ll likely rewatch the 1st half of season 1 as again one of the best episodes even if you were a non trek fan was episode 6 as it had an all star voice cast bringing the best of the best from all the previous Star Trek shows

hopefully the ending is tidy enough

This is great news-thank you Netflix! I always had a feeling that Star Trek Prodigy would find a new home I thought that it would land on Amazon Prime, but Netflix is just fine. I hope that Prodigy fans sign up for Netflix. It is important to support Prodigy so we can have a third season &, onward. I am looking forward to viewing Season 1 again and to Season 2 in 2024.

Still hoping Netflix do this for the final unaired season of snowpiercer!

Please tell me you know the difference between “formally” and “formerly”…

First Look | Star Trek: Prodigy - Season 2, Episode 1

Admiral Janeway is about to take the former crew of the U.S.S. Protostar under her wing on a real Starfleet ship!

Star Trek: Prodigy  creators Kevin and Dan Hageman revealed an extended first look at the second season's premiere episode this weekend.

Commenting on the exclusive clip, the Hagemans shared, "Our talented and dedicated  Star Trek: Prodigy  team is hard at work on Season 2 and all of us can’t wait for the world to see it. It’s just too good.”

In the clip, the former crew of the  U.S.S. Protostar  and now warrant Starfleet officers in training — Dal, Rok-Tak, Zero, Jankom Pog, and Murf — are reunited for an internship under the command of Admiral Janeway. They soon meet The Doctor, a dear friend of Janeway, who escorts them to the admiral's new ship. Starfleet has asked Janeway to observe a new wormhole to deem if it poses a threat — the very wormhole they created when they self-destructed the  Protostar .

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix outside of markets including Canada where it is available on CTV.ca and the CTV App, France on France Televisions channels and Okoo, in Iceland on Sjonvarp Simans Premium, as well as on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Central and Eastern Europe. Star Trek: Prodigy is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - What We Know So Far

Dal looking excited

"Star Trek: Prodigy" is the latest in a long line of excellent "Star Trek" shows, and a markedly different animated take on the sci-fi franchise than the comedic " Star Trek: Lower Decks ." It's also the first major "Star Trek" show that focuses on a bunch of complete space voyage amateurs, who stumble upon a mysterious Starfleet ship called U.S.S. Protostar, and use it to escape their less than ideal living conditions as miners on Tars Lamora.

Due to the fact that the show begins in the incredibly distant and dangerous Delta Quadrant of the galaxy, the early episodes of "Prodigy" have plenty of world-building to do for a "Star Trek" show, and it'll be interesting to see how the show progresses over the course of multiple seasons. Of course, in order to do that, the show actually needs to have more than one season. Will "Star Trek: Prodigy" become a multi-season phenomenon, or is it destined to remain a one-season wonder? Here's what we know about Season 2 of "Star Trek: Prodigy."

What's the release date of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

" Star Trek: Prodigy " will indeed get a second season, and what's more, it might arrive sooner than you think. The first season's mid-season finale is only beginning to loom on the horizon, but its numbers have been impressive enough that Paramount+ has already confirmed Season 2 is incoming, according to Deadline . This, of course, is a pretty tantalizing prospect for Trekkies who don't like to wait for too long between seasons.

Considering that the Season 1 mid-season finale airs on November 18, and the back half of the ten-episode season starts airing on January 6, 2022, The season won't end until February 2022. Since Season 2 will reportedly drop at some point in 2022, this means fans should have far less than a year to wait for it.

It's highly unlikely that the seasons will air back to back, so you probably shouldn't expect "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 2 before summer 2022 at the very earliest. If Paramount+ intends to follow the first season's evidently successful footprints, it would make sense to air the season premiere at roughly the same time of year. As such, the most logical release date of the new season would be in October 2022.

Who's in the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

We still don't know which characters survive the events of "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 1, or whether someone jumps ship to explore a particularly interesting planet. As it stands, though, it's pretty easy to wager that Brett Gray's Dal R'EI is the lynchpin of the series going forward, thanks to his role as the closest thing the U.S.S. Protostar has to a captain, and his mysterious origins. Ella Purnell's Vau N'Akat youngster, Gwyn, also seems like she'll be around for a while, which means that his father, the evil Diviner (voiced by John Noble), might also continue to grace the show with his devious attempts to capture the main characters' mysterious starship with the fearsome Drednok (Jimmi Simpson).

Though it's always possible that the first season will feature a tragic death or departure, it would also be pretty surprising if Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazragui), Zero (Angus Imrie), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) wouldn't be around in Season 2. As with Season 1, you can probably expect so see plenty of high-profile celebrities in fun recurring or guest roles, as well.

One of the greatest characters in "Star Trek: Prodigy" is, of course, the hologram version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the main character of "Star Trek: Voyager." The AI version of the character is a snarky, yet ever-present and helpful mentor figure to the main characters, which is great ... but also somewhat worrying, considering the fate such characters tend to suffer as the story progresses, and as the heroes learn to get by on their own. Hopefully, Hologram Janeway "lives" to see Season 2, but don't be surprised if this doesn't turn out to be the case.

What's the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

Since Season 1 is still ongoing, there's no way to know where the sophomore season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" intends to take things. Provided that the show doesn't plan to deviate from its premise too much, it's probably safe to say that the U.S.S. Protostar will continue its turbulent journey from the remote  Delta Quadrant to  Alpha Quadrant . Since the majority of the most famous "Star Trek" civilizations hang around in the Alpha and Beta quadrants, it's likely that the motley crew of main characters will run into more and more familiar faces as their journey progresses — think humans, Romulans, Klingons, and the like.

Due to the show's concept of starting where no man has gone before and boldly working the way back, you can probably expect the characters to bump into plenty of classic "Star Trek" civilizations as their journey progresses.

What To Expect From Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 told an epic story of the show's six young alien heroes saving Starfleet and the galaxy from destruction. At the end of Prodigy season 1, Dal R'El (Brett Gray) and his friends were accepted into Starfleet as warrant officers under the supervision of Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Prodigy season 1's finale set up intriguing directions for season 2, as Janeway must now lead a new mission into an alternate future to rescue the stranded Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), with Dal and the others coming along to help. Meanwhile, Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) is traveling to her homeworld of Solum to try to prevent the dark path her people, the Vau'Nakat, will take against Starfleet.

Star Trek: Prodigy surprised and delighted fans with its rich characters and exciting storytelling, as well as its multitude of Star Trek legacy guest stars. Famous faces from the past like Captain Thadiun Okona (Billy Campbell), Admiral Jellico (Ronny Cox), and others appeared in Prodigy season 1, and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman promise even more legacy characters will appear in season 2.

Prodigy has also become a sequel of sorts to Star Trek: Voyager ; it not only reestablished Admiral Janeway's lofty status in Starfleet , but it continues Janeway's relationship with Chakotay. The Hagemans have indicated they have plans for more seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy , and even a possible feature film. But it's good to know it won't be too long a wait until Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 returns later this year.

Star Trek Prodigy Season 2 Cast: Who will be in?

Brett Gray embodies Dal R’El, a 17-year-old captain of mysterious origin on the USS Protostar, later revealed as an augmented human with diverse alien DNA. Ella Purnell portrays Gwyn, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog,  and Angus Imrie voices Zero, a genderless Medusan wearing a containment suit. Rylee Alazraqui is Rok-Tahk, an 8-year-old Brikar with a penchant for science over security. Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, an invincible Mellanoid slimeworm. Jimmi Simpson as Drednok, the Diviner’s enforcer. John Noble is the ruthless Diviner, while Kate Mulgrew voices Janeway as an advisor and Starfleet Vice Admiral. We anticipate the full first-season cast to reprise their roles in Season 2.

Season 1 Review

According to Decider, the series is worth a stream as the Prodigy crafts an entertaining narrative that, while loosely linked to the broader Trek universe, becomes even more inviting to both newcomers and seasoned fans with the inclusion of Mulgrew.

Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 “Mirrors”

Star Trek: Discovery picks up immediately where “ Face the Strange ” left off, as our protagonists track their quarry’s ship to a hidden, interdimensional pocket of space that holds a few surprises for them and the audience.

Thanks to some sciencing from Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) and Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ), Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) has a way to find where Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and L’ak ( Elias Toufexis ) are. Apparently, there’s a wormhole hiding in plain sight near where Discovery lost track of the criminals’ warp signature.

This wormhole is too small for a Crossfield- class ship to fit through, so Burnham and Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ) – the latter of whom is on a mission to rehabilitate Moll, if possible – take a shuttle and see what’s on the other side of the wormhole’s aperture. Find a surprise, they do indeed, as the I.S.S. Enterprise , the evil version of the heroic Starfleet ship, is nestled in the wormhole – albeit without its crew, which apparently evacuated the vessel at some point. It’s beaten to hell and serves as a refuge for Moll and L’ak, whose own ship was destroyed by the interdimensional pocket of space’s destructive environment.

star trek prodigy release date

Discovery writers sure can be sneaky! They’ve been foreshadowing the appearance of a Constitution -class for the last two episodes; remember when Gen Rhys ( Patrick Kwok-Choon ) and Commander Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) both remarked the Connie was their favorite ship? As we’ll see, this isn’t the last bit of foreshadowing that comes true in this episode.

“How did it end up in interdimensional space?” “I don’t know. Must be one hell of a story.” – Book and Burnham upon seeing the I.S.S. Enterprise

Astute viewers will recognize an often-used cost-saving measure in the annals of Star Trek history: the reuse of sets from another concurrent show. (Seriously, rewatch TNG , DS9 , and Voyager and you’ll be surprised how often props and sets are reused between those shows.) As Burnham and Book explore various halls and rooms, including the bridge and sickbay, the familiar surroundings seen in Strange New Worlds are subtly transformed by Mirror Universe iconography. While nods to the iconic starship Enterprise are always appreciated, our initial reaction to this surprise location—admittedly tinged with pessimism—is that it’s of course it’s the Enterprise . A practical move, perhaps, to keep expenses in check. By Grabthar’s hammer… what a savings.

Finding the ship deserted sure is strange, and Burnham and Book ascertain Moll and L’ak are in sickbay, presumably with the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle. But first, the pair check out the transporter room, which holds some strange items, such as blankets, children’s toys, and a locket that holds a picture of two people, which Burnham inexplicably decides to take with her. Moreover, the dedication plaque of the I.S.S Enterprise tells the story of the ship and its crew: the Terran Universe emperor seemingly tried to make changes to the way things were done in that evil universe, and the Enterprise escaped and picked up refugees who were trying to flee the Terran Universe and enter the Prime Universe.

One of the leaders among those on the Enterprise was a Kelpien, who Burnham deduces must have been the Mirror Universe version of Saru, and that the crew must have fled the Enterprise once it got stuck in the interdimensional pocket of space. Is it just us, or does this sound like a potential episode of Strange New Worlds ?

Burnham, Book, Moll, and L’ak face off in sickbay, where Burnham makes a startling connection between L’ak and a particular dilemma he is facing. The criminal pair hope to use the Progenitor treasure to clear L’ak’s Breen blood bounty. Yes, L’ak is Breen, that enigmatic and masked species from Deep Space Nine . Neato!

The rest of the episode bounces between what’s happening on the Enterprise , and flashing back to how Moll and L’ak first met and became romantically involved. Moll, the courier, would do business on the Breen space station on which L’ak, a member of a royal Breen family, was posted. The two connected over L’ak’s recent demotion and efforts to fight the embarrassment that came with it.

Over some time, the two became nearly inseparable, and L’ak even took the bold step with Moll by showing her his face – a big deal in Breen culture, as keeping their masks on allows them to retain their true, semi-transparent form, and not the solidified appearance we’ve seen on L’ak. Their relationship is tested when L’ak’s superior (and uncle), Primarch Ruhn ( Tony Nappo ) decides to interrupt their courtship. L’ak doesn’t take kindly to being asked to kill Moll, so the Breen turns on his own people, earns a Breen blood bounty, and flees with Moll. The pair now share a goal: earn enough latinum to retire on an (unnamed) fabled planet somewhere in the Gamma Quadrant, free from the trials and hardships of the courier life.

Suffice it to say, “Mirrors” is most memorable because it casts a welcome light on the shadowed backstory of this season’s main villains. Moll and L’ak are now a relatable pair, star-crossed lovers who are hell-bent on earning themselves a happy ending. As much as we don’t want to see the Progenitors’ tech get into the wrong hands, who now doesn’t want to see everything work out for Moll and L’ak?

Anyway, the quartet still need to get off the Enterprise , but the shuttle on which Burnham and Book arrived is destroyed by the turbulent pocket of space. With mere minutes to spare before the Enterprise is destroyed by the wormhole’s tiny aperture, Book and Moll share some last-minute words about their shared relationship with the late Cleveland Booker, and how Book hopes Moll makes the right choices regarding her quest for the Progenitor tech. Burnham, meanwhile, engages in a melee with L’ak, and the Breen ends up injured and inadvertently relinquishes control to Burnham of the next map piece in the Progenitor puzzle. The courier and disgraced Breen end up escaping the ship in a convenient Terran warp pod, leaving the chase between our heroes and enemies for another day.

“If we hit it precisely with a sequential hexagonal pattern, it should stay open for approximately sixty seconds. But once it collapses, it’s gone for good.” “Why hexagonal?” “Doesn’t matter… it’ll work.” – Adira ( Blu del Barrio ), Rayner, and Stamets as the crew finds a way to get the wormhole aperture bigger. We think this line from Stamets is reflective of the evolving working relationship between the results-orientated Rayner and the crew, and how this relationship is getting better the longer Rayner is first officer.

Burnham devises a novel way to signal her first officer for help in getting the Enterprise through the aperture: a pulsing tractor beam emitting from the Enterprise , shot through the wormhole’s opening, in a numerical sequence featured in a famous play from Kellerun culture. Rayner is then able to lead his crew to devise a way to pull the Enterprise into normal space.

The sequence where Rayner is faced with command of a ship tasked with the near-impossible rescue of his captain is the best of the episode. It’s no secret Rayner was knocked down a few pegs after his demotion and reassignment to Discovery , but that lack of confidence and inner angst is demolished thanks to Rayner listening and working with his bridge crew to save the Enterprise . Plenty of lesser-known bridge officers get a say in how Discovery could help the Mirror ship, and lightning-fast decision-making shows Rayner back on his game.

The last element to note about this episode is some emotional trouble Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) is having. Tilly provides an outlet for this angst. Culber explains the experiences he’s had in the last few years – namely dying, coming back to life, and being a Trill host – really put into perspective the intellectual journey he is on in the face of the Progenitor’s quest. Tilly helps him realize he isn’t only experiencing an intellectual quest, but a spiritual one. This conversation is just another instance of Discovery setting up some wild expectations for what the crew might ultimately discover at the end of the season – something beyond the bounds of science, perhaps?

star trek prodigy release date

Even though their prey gets away again, Burnham and her crew have the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle, and it is hiding in the I.S.S. Enterprise ’s sickbay. Hidden in the map piece Burnham grabbed from L’ak is a vial, which Stamets will analyze soon. Burnham learns the crew who escaped from the I.S.S. Enterprise ended up in the Prime Universe and were able to start new lives. A Terran scientist aboard the Enterprise , Dr. Cho, ended up being a branch admiral, and we’re meant to assume she was one of the scientists on Dr. Vellek’s team hundreds of years ago as they studied the Progenitor tech. Dr. Cho then hid her piece of the Progenitor puzzle aboard her old ship as a symbolic gesture of her ability to find freedom in a new universe.

Discovery continues its final season with another thumbs-up episode that serves an important lore-building role in the franchise. Seeing the Breen again is a joy, especially since we were staring at one the whole time and never knew it. And how striking was that Breen space station where L’ak was based? Another important note for Star Trek historians is that now the Mirror Universe Enterprise is in the 32 nd century, and stationed near Earth thanks to Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detmer piloting the ship back to Federation space. Will we see that ship again this season?

As the Progenitor puzzle deepens, so do the emotional stakes for our crew, exemplified by Culber’s introspective journey, the subtle reignition of Book and Burnham’s relationship, and Rayner’s triumphant return to leadership. We’re now at the halfway point in this season, so there’s still plenty of time for surprises, emotional consequences, and expectation-setting for this eagerly awaited treasure.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Hopefully, you’re watching this episode with subtitles on, because goodness is it hard to hear what masked Breen says.
  • The Mirror Universe version of the U.S.S. Enterprise was last seen in the Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror,” albeit this wasn’t the Strange New Worlds version of the ship. Likewise, the Terran version of Spock, whom Booker asks if Burnham ever met, was in that same episode.
  • How did Adira conclude they were the one who brought the time bug aboard Discovery ?
  • Why didn’t Burnham and Book try talking down Moll and L’ak before diving into the room with the holo-projected doubles?

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery stream Thursdays on Paramount+ , this season stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).

Star Trek Origin Movie Confirmed by Paramount, Logline Revealed

Star Trek has been dormant on the big screen for a long time, but the franchise is looking to get back into theaters within the next two years. At CinemaCon, Paramount unveiled its titles for the company's movie slate for 2025 and 2026, officially confirming plans to release a major Star Trek film during this time.

Previously, it was reported that a new Star Trek film was in development that's separate from the planned sequel to 2016's Star Trek Beyond . The film slate reveal has now officially confirmed that the project is in development, and as it's currently untitled, it's listed as Untitled Star Trek Origin Story . Also confirmed to be on board are director Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ), writer Seth Grahame-Smith ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ), and producer J.J. Abrams .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Gets Renewed, Lower Decks to End With Season 5

A brief logline was provided by Paramount, describing the project as " an origin story that takes place decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film ." This is also confirmation that the prequel is connected to the 2009 movie along with its two sequels. Given the timeline, it can be expected to follow an all-new cast of characters, though there are likely to be references that connect the film to the other Trek movies.

Star Trek 4 Is Still in the Works

Meanwhile, Star Trek 4 remains in active development, even after multiple false starts over the past several years in getting made. In March, it was reported that the project was getting back on track with The Flight Attendant co-creator Steve Yockey signing on to write a new screenplay for the movie. Franchise star Zoe Saldana recently addressed the project's slow development, sharing how she still had hope the movie would see its eventual release.

What Is Star Trek: Discovery's Spore Drive and How Does It Work?

"I still have hope. I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team,” she said on The Playlist's podcast . “I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on Star Trek, which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so."

The untitled Star Trek prequel is expected to be released in 2025 or 2026, but a release date hasn't yet been set.
