Nissan Patrol Super Safari review: the best of both worlds

Off-road or on the motorway, the 2022 model of the region’s legendary suv is here to conquer everything in its path.

Since its resurrection in 2017, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari has continued to dominate as the region’s favourite off-road vehicle. The Japanese manufacturer bowed to popular demand and brought the wilder Nissan Patrol back into production, and tweaked and tuned every new version for the better.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari follows the trend. For starters, it sits slightly higher than its predecessors. This not only gives you a better view of what’s ahead, but also creates more clearance underneath the car to comfortably deal with extremely uneven terrain. Or an extra-large speed bump.

Engine: 6-cylinder, 4.8-litre Transmission: 5-speed automatic and manual Power: 280 brake horsepower Torque: 451Nm Price: from Dh153,00 On sale: now

Nissan has also introduced cruise control, anti-lock brakes, smart tyre-pressure monitoring and a number of other driving aids that make for a more comfortable ride. It’s now available in either a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The result is that the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari feels more at home than ever when you’re driving it on asphalt. We were fairly surprised just how smooth the drive was and the silence in the cabin as the 4.8-litre, 280bhp V6 engine roared away was impressive.

Choose between cloth, leather and PVC upholstery. Photo: Nissan

Now, if you just read that paragraph above and are worried that the Super Safari has been declawed, fear not — it’s equally as fun off the road as it is on it. There’s not much (if anything) that the robust suspension and new telescopic shock absorbers can’t handle. You feel more in control than ever thanks to the intelligent system that manages engine speed when under or oversteering. When we took it for a gentle spin off-road it instantly felt safely at home. The temptation to plant our foot and bounce over every hill in sight was palpable. This one lives for rough terrain.

Nissan has been very clever with its 2022 Patrol Super Safari. While improving the driving experience for thrill-seekers it has introduced the safety and comfort features found in the more luxurious Nissan Patrol, which will appeal to drivers. You can choose between cloth, leather or PVC upholstery for inside the cavernous cabin, with each seat providing comfy and ample space. And we love the straightforward nature of the Bluetooth connection that hooks your phone up to the in-car entertainment system easily.

Yes, it’s more of an everyday SUV now. You can use it for doing the school run, transporting friends and family or nipping out to do the grocery shopping. But it’s also ready to be loaded up with camping equipment, shovels and recovery sand boards at a moment’s notice for an off-road adventure.

Nissan’s evolution of the Super Safari has so far been well balanced. And this 2022 version delivers its most complete version yet. There’s no need to rip up the rule book when it comes to improvements, and by focusing on functionality and interior comfort upgrades, the Super Safari will live on for a long time.

Bachir Gemayel, Sales and Marketing Director, Al Masaood Automobiles argues that the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is a step ahead of other SUVs

The exceptional design, impressive technologies and vibrant performance of the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari are a perfect blend that works in sync to deliver a pleasurable overall driving experience to its owners. This drives the popularity of the Nissan Super Safari model further upwards, consistently winning the hearts of many car enthusiasts in the UAE who are in search of new off-roading adventures.

As a reflection of its growing popularity, Al Masaood Automobiles, the official distributor of Nissan in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, witnessed a 30 per cent sales increase in the Patrol Super Safari during the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. A large 90 per cent of its buyers were male customers whilst 10 per cent were female as reported by the company.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari continues the rich heritage of the Nissan brand in the region and showcases the Patrol’s undisputed standing in the UAE’s automotive culture. It comes as no surprise that a growing number of women drivers are gravitating towards this model, as they, like their male counterparts, invest more in and value its class-leading power.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari picks up where the previous models had left off. It builds on the SUV’s immense popularity amongst car owners in the UAE and the region who are after powerful vehicle performance designed for off-roading adventures.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 offers enhanced performance supported by a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which can produce 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, the Patrol Super Safari, which is available in a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, delivers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway.

Equipped with many capabilities and aesthetic features, it boasts a unique exterior and interior design for a memorable driving experience. Staying true to the Nissan identity, it incorporates features that combine strength, stability, control and robust performance even on rough terrains.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 is available across Al Masaood Automobiles showrooms in Abu Dhabi in colours black, white and gold, with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. In addition, the striking `Super Safari’ decal can be seen along the side of the car, complemented by a set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Customers mainly gravitated towards the black and twilight grey colour combination in 2021– accounting for 49 per cent of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari sales during the period. However, the radiance of the white hue proved to be a great driver of customer demand in 2022. During the first quarter of this year, the white Patrol Super Safari units constituted 52 per cent of the total sales.

As for its interior, the new model sports luxurious leather seats with a special Super Safari emboss that adds a unique touch to the model’s overall appeal. It also includes a display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and a wireless charger for added comfort and convenience. Its advanced technologies are amongst the highlights of the Patrol Super Safari, reflecting Nissan’s commitment to building vehicles with outstanding features that can level up the overall experience of its customers whilst on the road.

The Super Safari 2022 offers a host of Nissan safety features, including cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system that prevents understeer when entering or exiting a corner, and dual-front SRS airbags that reflect Nissan’s attention to the smallest details of security and safety in its models.

Providing the right features and technologies to instill confidence and guarantee reliability and stability at various road conditions, the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is without a doubt a step ahead of other SUVs in its segment.

Nissan patrol super safari: enduring off-road icon’s encore run.

By Ghaith Madadha - May 01,2023 - Last updated at May 01,2023

First introduced in 1997 and resurrected again seven years after its ostensible retirement, the fifth “Y61” generation Nissan Patrol’s 2017 Middle East comeback marks a welcome return of a rugged and authentic off-road icon.

Now dubbed the Nissan Patrol Super Safari and beloved by Gulf motorists in particular for its near-legendary durability, extensive off-road ability and high comfort levels, the Y61 has since been sold concurrent with the more modern and refined, if perhaps more softer-edged, “Y62” sixth generation Patrol, circa 2010 onwards.

Reliable reputation

A favourite family car and lifestyle off-roader, the Y61 Patrol’s position as an icon of the Gulf automotive scene is rooted in its extreme durability.

This is perhaps best exemplified by its popular use as the basis for highly modified uphill sand dune drag racing, where its proverbially “bullet-proof” engine is routinely tuned to in excess of 2,000BHP.

Playing to such a reputation, the revived Patrol Super Safari has since also spawned more off-road capable factory modified Middle East market Falcon and Gazelle editions.

If pitched as a resurrection in response market demands in its return for private use, the Y61 has, however, never truly been retired, and remained available for fleet sales to non-governmental international agencies.

In regular service for use in inhospitable terrain and demanding conditions by such organizations during its 2010-2017 “hiatus”, such vehicles were more basic and utilitarian variants, whereas the revived Super Safari is a more sportily styled and better-equipped variant with extensive and more up-to-date comfort, convenience and tech features.

Refreshingly uncomplicated

Boxy, chunky and upright, the Super Safari’s ruggedly utilitarian styling is virtually unchanged for it revival run, bar for the addition of more muscularly defined wheel arches, slightly redesigned light elements and the addition of two-tone paint, tailgate spoiler and new alloy wheel design.

With a big glasshouse and low, level waistline allowing for good visibility, the Super Safari’s design is refreshingly uncomplicated and easier on the eye with its horizontal emphasis, airy cabin and low wheel-arch to bonnet height, than more complicated and vertically-oriented modern SUVs.

Renowned for its durability, the Super safari’s thoroughly proven naturally-aspirated large displacement 4.8-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine carries over. Capable of handling huge power upgrades at the hands of aftermarket tuners, the Super Safari’s engine is relatively unstressed in its stock factory state.

Developing 280BHP at a low-revving 4,800rpm and a more substantial 332lb/ft torque at 3,600rpm on the more generous “gross” rating, as advertised, the Patrol’s engine is, however, estimated to produce perhaps around 248BHP and 310lb/ft by the more widely used ‘net’ rating system.

Ruggedly smooth

A silky smooth “straight six” with a responsive yet relaxed demeanour, the Super Safari’s engine is progressively linear in delivery.

Pulling well from tick-over to redline, it is confident and capable, if not excessive, but delivers good low-end response, a versatile mid-range and an eager, if low-revving, top-end.

Driving the rear wheels — under normal conditions — through a smooth shifting 5-speed automatic gearbox, the Super Safari’s engine is perhaps thirsty compared to more modern engines, but nevertheless carries its significant 2.5-tonne estimated heft through 0-100km/h in approximately 10-seconds.

Built on a rugged ladder-frame chassis and riding on multi-link coil spring suspension with good articulation, the Super Safari is designed with off-road ability and durability in mind, and even features an electric-driven winch embedded in the front bumper.

For traversing rough terrain, the Super Safari features good 215mm ground clearance and 47° side slope and 38.7° grade capability, while short overhangs allow generous 37° approach, 27° ramp and 31° departure angles.

Its off-road abilities are meanwhile underpinned by its tough four-wheel-drive system that includes low range gears and a locking rear differential for more demanding conditions.

Sturdy and spacious

An unassailable off-road beast, the Super Safari nevertheless avails itself well on-road. Tough but comfortably compliant, its suspension and tall tyres provide a cushioned and settled ride quality, making short shrift of big and sudden bumps and potholes.

In handling and manoeuvrability, the Patrol certainly isn’t a corner carving road racer, but isn’t particularly unwieldy either. It is instead confident, balanced and predictable through corners, and comparatively well contains body roll, while steering is light and user-friendly, if not layered with nuance and feedback.

Confidently planted and stable on highway, the Super Safari has an impregnably sturdy sense of insulated refinement, which extends to cabin quality.

Airy and spacious, it comfortably seats front and middle row passengers, and features twin side folding third row seats to accommodate a total complement of seven.

Styling is meanwhile elegantly uncomplicated, with user-friendly controls and instruments, and plenty of storage space. Updated in presentation and materials, the Patrol’s cabin incorporates more contemporary amenities including an infotainment screen system, reversing camera, and automatic climate control.

Driven in the UAE: 2021 Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Auto test drives.

Amidst clamour for luxury SUVs, this fabled iteration of an iconic off-roader stands tall

auto safari

Introduced towards the end of 1951, the Nissan 4W60 — later named Patrol — had a relatively slow start. But over the decades, helped by the much improved G60, the MQ, and the GQ iterations, the Patrol nameplate established itself as a badge to be reckoned with among off-road enthusiasts. However, it was the fifth-generation Y61 version that truly cemented its now legendary status as a go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle. While it was popular in markets such as Australia and South America too, in the Middle East, the Nissan Patrol almost became an integral part of the landscape. This was especially so here in the UAE. The Y61 Patrol Safari was so popular among the country’s off-roading enthusiasts that it was safe at the time to assume that it would only evolve at a pace similar to that of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. It seemed too good to be altered, and was etched into the collective psyche of the region’s dune-bashers.

However, as rival brands started churning out capable SUVs loaded with luxury trappings that appealed as much to the affluent city driver as it did to the daring explorer, the Safari started looking archaic. The modern, comfortable, luxurious, and sophisticated Y62 interpretation of the legendary Patrol was launched in 2010, complete with a new platform, a design overhaul, an interior that oozed luxury, a new V8 engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a new, more capable four-wheel drive system. Sales figures show that was a wise decision, but what seemed a wiser decision to Patrol aficionados was the one taken by the Japanese carmaker to keep the Y61 in production alongside the new version.

auto safari

The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line of the Y61 that is specific to the Middle East. While it essentially remains the same for the 2021 model year, a few tweaks and additions here and there have made sure it remains suitably updated. These include three new colour combinations, with a black exterior colour option joining the existing white and gold body colours. Also available as an option is a new gold accent across the roof, bumpers and spare tyre cover as an alternative to the dual tone accent from previous models, letting owners create the combination of their choice. The classic ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car has also got a subtle refresh. New 17-inch alloy wheels with a ‘diamond cut’ pattern and black paint rounds out the exterior upgrades.

auto safari

The interiors of the 2021 Super Safari have also been updated with new tan leather and cloth options to choose from. If you choose the tan leather option, the seats come with a special Super Safari embossing. A new 8-inch display and audio system with Apple Carplay add a touch of modernity to the otherwise delectably utilitarian cabin.

auto safari

The rest of the good-old Safari remains the same. The 4.8-litre inline six-cylinder mated to five-speed automatic is superbly capable, refined and smooth on- and off-road. While an adventure-oriented three-door variant is still available, the five-door model is as practical and comfortable as any modern SUV and is still a great family car. It can easily seat seven passengers thanks to the two foldout cargo-area seats, which are also reasonably comfortable. It also comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in cool box, making it an ideal companion for impulsive detours into the wilderness with family or friends.

auto safari

And the rough country brings the best out of the Super Safari, with its straight-line drive transfer allowing on-the-fly shifting from 2WD to 4WD with just one shift of a lever. The navigation system, rear locking differential, front and rear-pintle tow hooks as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera make sure you are ready for anything that the mountains, the desert or the back woods throw at you. Stability control and a tyre-pressure monitor are standard, as are dual front airbags, ABS, an immobiliser and cruise control.

auto safari

A single model lasting six decades and still going strong is no mean feat. Not more than a handful of cars have managed to achieve this in the history of automobiles. And even as the Patrol nameplate keeps evolving in its successive iterations, if Nissan chooses to keep the Y61 going with periodic updates, there will still be takers. And they will tell you why this is one of the best SUVs on sale today.

The Oldest New SUV That Nissan Still Makes And Why It Exists

In a day and age of cutting-edge tech-laden EVs, find out why Nissan continues to offer the rugged body-on-frame Patrol SUV in certain markets

  • The Nissan Patrol Safari Y61, known for its off-road prowess, has maintained its reputation for ruggedness and has a devoted fan base, particularly in regions like Australia, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • The Patrol Y61 is highly valued by non-governmental organizations and the United Nations for its unmatched capabilities in accessing remote and challenging locations, making it the ultimate choice for traversing unforgiving environments.
  • The Patrol Y61 offers versatile powertrain options and a comprehensive range of trim levels, catering to various needs and applications. It boasts a powerful 4.8-liter gasoline engine, making it a favorite among Middle Eastern tuners who push its performance to over 1000 horsepower.

Fewer vehicles can command the respect and admiration that the legendary Nissan Patrol Safari does. The Patrol Safari built originally in the 1950s with inspiration from the Willy's Jeep, this Japanese marvel has managed to uphold its reputation of unwavering ruggedness, owing to its exceptional off-road prowess. The Patrol has garnered a strong following in regions such as Australia, the Middle East, and Africa where off-road exploration and daring escapades prevail, and has cultivated a devoted fan base.

The fifth-generation Patrol Safari Y61 is a model the North American region never had the pleasure of seeing, however, the region got its first introduction to the Patrol-based platform in 2010 with the introduction of the second-generation Infiniti QX56. The Patrol Y61 remains the oldest new Nissan SUV that is still in production in selected markets as demand for the SUV has not weaned the slightest.

The Patrol Safari doesn't hold the distinction of being the oldest Japanese truck still in production, that spot is shared with its arch-nemesis the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series . While the newer iterations of the Nissan Patrol boast heightened luxury and a plethora of modern features, these aspects gracefully take a back seat in the narrative of this article. Instead, it is the fifth-generation Patrol Super Safari Y61 that claims the spotlight in this epic saga of classic mobility.

A 4x4 That Is Worth It For Corporations And Enthusiasts Alike

For nearly three decades, the Nissan Patrol Y61 has stood as the primary choice of vehicle for Non-governmental organizations operating in Africa. The vehicle's unmatched capabilities have made it an indispensable asset for these organizations, allowing them to access remote and challenging locations that are beyond the reach of conventional pick-up trucks and standard SUVs. Given the necessity to transport vital supplies to remote areas, the Patrol Y61's enduring performance has solidified its position as the ultimate choice for traversing such unforgiving environments.

Enthusiasts love the Patrol Y61 for its off-road capabilities thanks in part to its four-wheel drive system with an intelligent rear differential lock that allows the SUV to navigate difficult terrain such as mud or sand easily by distributing torque evenly to the rear wheels. Up front are three-link and five-link rear telescopic shocks and heavy-duty coil springs to ensure that the SUV beats all obstacles in its way. Nissan has made sure that whether enthusiast use or corporate, drivers are not left lacking with a host of features including:

  • Tan leather seats and door trim
  • Eight-way powered driver seat
  • Four-way passenger seats
  • Automatic climate control
  • Navigation system with Bluetooth, USB, CD, AUX, and AM/FM radio
  • Rear Pintle hook
  • Dual front airbags
  • Cruise control

In the Middle East region, the Y61 Patrol is a regular fixture on the desert dunes, in both its original form and as customized versions, a testament to its popularity and adaptability in the region. Nissan's continuous production of the Y61 Patrol isn't for amusement purposes as the vehicle is one of the big sellers in the region.

In the United Arab Emirates, for example, the Patrol Super Safari Y61 has a base price of 178,000 AED, which translates to $48,461. While this price point might not raise eyebrows among North American readers accustomed to different market standards, it's essential to consider that the Patrol Safari is the definition of basic as you will be hard-pressed to even get navigation on some models.

Versatile And Robust Powertrain Powers This Body-On-Frame SUV

The Nissan Patrol Y61 has firmly cemented its position as the preferred vehicle for Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the United Nations (UN). Recognizing this significant role, Nissan has curated a collection of aid-specific models tailored to the requirements of these organizations. These specialized models are equipped with a diverse array of engine options, catering to varying needs across different trim levels. The engine displacements span a range from 2.8 to 4.8 liters, encompassing both four and six-cylinder configurations, available in either gasoline or diesel variants.

The Nissan Patrol Y61's extensive lineup of trim levels ensures that there is a model suited for every specific application. The available trims include STD, GL, GRX, Amsterdam Stock GL, and Ambulance. This comprehensive range caters to a spectrum of needs, from essential transport to advanced configurations required for specialized missions.

Specifically, the Patrol Safari is powered by a 4.8 liter inline six gas-powered engine producing 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Power translates to the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic transmission. The Patrol's 4.8-liter gas engine is noticeably more powerful than its competitor the Land Cruiser 70 Series. As expected, the powerful six-cylinder gets horrendous gas mileage of 13 mpg when off-roading and 19 mpg in city driving.

Nissan Patrol Engine Specifications

The diverse engine line-up of the Patrol is held in high regard as reliable and durable, some Middle Eastern tuners have pushed the 4.8-liter engine to over 1000 horsepower. These tuners race the highly modified Patrols up the many steep dunes in the Middle Eastern region, A quick search on YouTube will yield many videos of modified Nissan Patrol beating supercars and recking dunes.

The Rugged Nissan SUV's Design Variation And Interior

The Patrol Y61 has always had an iconic design that has not changed much from the previous generation Y60. From the beginning, the Patrol has maintained a rugged boxy design that is functional and appealing . The Y61 received a light refresh in 2005 that saw new fender flares, headlights, and a larger taillight. The front is dominated by a long hood sheltering the beastly six-cylinder and a large bumper, a long side step makes it easy to step into the vehicle through the large doors.

The Nissan Y61 Patrol can be had as a four-door SUV or a two-door available in the Middle Eastern Region. The rear end features a split barn door with a spare tire housing mount on the right side, the rear of the Super Safari sports a spoiler at the edge of the back that adds to the visual appeal. Although rugged, the Patrol Super Safari does have a sunroof that offers a bit of modern creature comforts.

The interior of the Patrol is as simple as it is practical. The Patrol Safari comes with leather seats with leather door inserts contrasting the black dashboard. An 8.0-inch infotainment system takes center stage in the middle of the dash with silver contrasting sides. Unlike many modern luxury SUVs today, the Super Safari has a traditional shifter in the center console. The center armrest features a cool box to store your drink on those hot weather days.

Summing Up The Nissan Patrol

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari is an undeniable legend of offroading that very few have had the pleasure to experience due to its limited market availability and lack of modern-day creature comforts. This SUV exists in Nissan's portfolio of vehicles to serve individuals and organizations with a desire to go places many would dare not.

The Patrol is the last of a dying breed along with the 70 Series Land Cruiser that is unapologetically raw in its build concept, a vehicle that justifies the phrase " if its not broke, dont fix it". The fifth generation Y61 Patrol is a gentle reminder of a bygone era of automotive industry when manufacturers cared more about how well machines worked instead of pleasing the masses with plush interiors and unnecessary technology that distracts from the journey.

2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” Is The New SUV You Really Want

We have lamented the Nissan Patrol SUV not being available in the US. Instead, we are stuck with the overpriced, bloated, overstuffed Armada. The 2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” is the new SUV you really want. This is a full-size SUV 4×4 available in the Middle East and the Philippines. They’re rugged, dependable, and as capable as any stripped-down Toyota Land Cruiser.

The 2021 Patrol Super Safari has seen limited changes which is probably good

super safari top speed

Nissan has chosen 1) not to change it since the late-1990s, and 2) not to make it available anywhere else but the aforementioned countries. For 2021 Nissan has added some great features and upgrades making us want it even more. The change you’ll notice first is that black has been added to the very limited pallet of Patrol colors. So now paint colors have really expanded with black added to either gold or white. No, we’re not kidding.

The other noticeable changes include 17-inch alloy wheels, now finished in black. Also, the Super Safari decal on the quarters has been updated. Nissan doesn’t hesitate to pull out all of the stops for some exciting and dynamic changes from 2020 to 2021 models. Not.

Inside the center stack is housed an eight-inch infotainment screen and includes Apple CarPlay. New cloth upholstery along with tan leather are two new features. An option is the addition of Super Safari embossing in the seats.

The Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door

super safari top speed

So why does the Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door, and the rest of the world doesn’t? Thierry Sabbagh, Nissan’s Managing Director in the Middle East, told Carbuzz that Super Safari’s longevity in the Middle East is due to its “deep-rooted heritage.” He continues that the Patrol “adds a modern look to the powerful performance and durability of the SUV – maintaining its credibility to be the ideal partner for an off-road driving adventure across the region.” In other words, he doesn’t have a clue why.

We suppose if he knew why he’d be head of marketing or he’d be a VP at Nissan. Instead, he is tasked with providing no reason for the reason the Patrol is popular there and why it is not sold here. But we digress.

One reason we can readily see why the Patrol is so popular in the Middle East is price

super safari top speed

One reason we can readily see is because of the price . The 2021 Patrol Super Safari lists for 171k AED, which translates to $47k in the US. Some may find that a bit high considering the Nissan Armada starts at just $1,500 more. But let’s get real; most Armadas are loaded up to the $65,000 to $80,000 price. That is getting close to twice the price of a Patrol.

We can lament further but instead look to the immediate future for a new Nissan Titan and its SUV offshoot Armada. Nissan has a lot of catching up to do as it has let its catalog of vehicles somewhat die on the vine. That in turn has caused a cash crunch that puts the future of the company in question. There is hope that Nissan can get its act together and start a product cadence of new, competitive vehicles that match feature to feature the best in each class.

‘Al Ostoura’ 2024 edition of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Nissan celebrates rich heritage of the Patrol Super Safari with exclusive 2024 ‘Al Ostoura’ edition

Dubai, UAE (29 February 2024)  – Nissan has announced the launch of a special edition 2024 Patrol Super Safari to commemorate the iconic SUV and its esteemed position within the Nissan Patrol line-up in the region. Titled ‘Al Ostoura’, which literally translates to ‘The Legend’ in Arabic, the GCC-exclusive model pays homage to the Patrol Super Safari’s rich heritage and celebrates its deep-rooted connection to the people of the region.

The Patrol Super Safari, affectionately referred to as the “VTC”, is based on the fifth-generation Nissan Patrol, which was originally produced from 1997 to 2010. Its formidable all-terrain capabilities and class-leading power made it a popular SUV for off-road enthusiasts and thrill-seekers in the Gulf region. The enduring customer demand for this model in the GCC led to its revival in 2016 as the Patrol Super Safari – and it has been in production ever since.

The 2024 ‘Al Ostoura’ edition marks the culmination of the legacy of the fifth-generation Patrol and features various exterior and interior design enhancements inspired by the region’s desert landscape. Marking its distinction are special badges on the SUV’s rear pillar and engine, featuring ‘Al Ostoura since 1951’ engraved in Arabic calligraphy, alongside the SUV’s iconic silhouette.

The distinctive Arabian desert dunes also inspire a recurring design motif in the Al Ostoura edition – proudly displayed on the spare tire cover and fender garnish, as well as interior elements such as the centre console badge and floor mats. The rich color palette, featuring two exterior color schemes, is complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels, distinctive body stickers and contrasting exterior inserts on the roof, bumpers and wheel arches.

Thierry Sabbagh, President, Nissan Saudi Arabia, INFINITI Middle East and Managing Director, Nissan Middle East, said , “The Patrol is a legendary nameplate for Nissan in the Middle East, and the journey of the Patrol Super Safari over decades is a testament to the deep emotional bond we have built with our loyal customers. By combining exceptional performance and nostalgic memories for GCC nationals and expatriates alike, it has successfully integrated itself into the cultural fabric of our region. The ‘Al Ostoura’ special edition encapsulates the spirit of the Patrol Super Safari and is our way to express our gratitude to the people of the region who have made it more than just a vehicle, but a cherished part of our shared heritage.”

Legendary ‘Al Ostoura’

A rugged and reliable off-road vehicle, the 2024 Patrol Super Safari Al Ostoura is powered by a 4.8-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, delivering 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Featuring Valve Timing Control (VTC) and Nissan Induction Control System (NICS), it offers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway. The power is seamlessly directed through a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission.

Beyond its powerful performance, the “Al Ostoura” is equipped with an electronically controlled power steering for effortless control at low speeds and firm handling at high speeds. This is complemented by cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, dual-front SRS airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) to ensure a safer and more connected driving experience, both on and off the road.

The 2024 Nissan Patrol Super Safari Al Ostoura is now available through Nissan’s partner network across the Gulf region. This exclusive model joins the wider model line-up, which includes the Patrol and the race-inspired Patrol NISMO models.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
