Day 1 : Kochi

Meet your trip leader at the hotel, post-lunch at 13:00hrs, and head out to see Fort Kochi by bike.

One of the foremost trading hubs on the western coast of India, Fort Kochi drew colonial interest with its aromatic spices. Along with traders from China, Portugal, Arabs, and Holland came a cocktail of religions, cultural practices, and diverse food. Kerala owes its cosmopolitan vibe to the traders who braved the seas to come to this land.

In the evening, we convene over dinner tonight at a seaside restaurant known for seafood and Indian delicacies.

Itinerary Image

Day 2 : Alleppey

A classic coastal ride along a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach on one side and unevenly spread serene backwaters on the other. See the birdlife in action with egrets, cormorants, herons, kites, kingfishers, ducks, and many more. A short stop to see the art of making traditional boats, locally called “Kettuvallom”. They make wooden boats both for backwaters and sea.

We may also see coconuts, cut into halves being dried under the sun. The dried coconuts will be further pressed in the oil mills nearby to make the coconut oil. From curries to Ayurvedic oils, coconut and its oil is an essential part of daily life here.

Other common sights that you may see – People collecting clams by diving in and out of the backwaters, small village fish markets and auction centers, ladies walking door to door for selling fish, fishermen returning from sea, and Christian churches almost every few kilometers.

We keep biking through small fishermen villages, lush coconut trees, and plentiful fish farms.

Kochi-Allepey.PNG

Day 3 : Vagamon

From below sea level village in Alleppey to the hill station of Vagamon, the lands transforms from rice fields & lakes to rubber plantations & valleys.

We take an hour vehicle transfer to cycling start point. A hilly ride, with both dips and steep climbs, but the shades of plantations help you grapple with this challenging ride better. The last 15 km of cycling is an uphill ride all the way to the hotel.

Allepey-Vagamon(63km).png

Day 4 : Thekkady

This is going to be a beautiful ride – from the tea gardens of Vagamon to Cardamom Hills of Thekkady, with few coffee plantations in between. It’s the last day for hills and is yet another challenge.

The birdlife is plenty with mynas, parakeets, drongos making calls, and flying from one tree to another.

Vagamon-Thekkady.PNG

Day 5 : Madurai

We take in the spectacular views of the western ghat mountains before descending to the neighboring state Tamil Nadu.

Cycling through many villages with banana plantations, vegetable farms, vineyards, and windmills we reach the town of Theni. Post cycling we have around 2 hours of vehicle transfer to Madurai.

Thekkady-Madurai.PNG

Day 6 : Chettinad

It’s best to visit the main temple early in the morning when it’s relatively less busy. Meenakshi Amman (Sri Meenakshi) temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvati. The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500-year-old city of Madurai. The temple complex houses 14 magnificent Gopurams or towers including two golden Gopurams for the main deities.

Madurai-Chettinadu.PNG

Day 7 : Chettinad

Today the day is at leisure and you can plan your own day. Chettinad is home to the Chettiar community, a wealthy merchant class family from Tamil Nadu. With palatial houses that used to host life celebrations, festivities, and rituals, the village has a story to tell of its glorious past. Most of the palatial 18th century mansions that one will get to see here were built using materials imported from east Asian countries and Europe about 100 years ago.

The celebrated Chettinad cuisine is one of the spiciest and the most aromatic in India. The fresh ground masalas give it the distinctive integrity in taste. The cuisine that is pre dominantly non-vegetarian stretches out into interesting snacks and delectable vegetarian dishes too. At Mansion, one can learn to cook Chettinad cuisine with the Aachi(elderly lady) from the village.

Aathangudy, a village situated about 10 Kms from Visalam is a place famous for its hand made tiles. There are over one hundred small scale tile factories in this village where the entire tile making process is carried out by human hands.

The famed Chettinad's Cotton sarees and textiles are woven on in small handloom home units across Chettinad. A couple minutes walk away from Mansion is one such handloom unit making the most vibrant Indian textile.

Day 8 : Thanjavur

After breakfast, we ride into the adjoining temple village, Thanjavur. The World Heritage–listed Brihadishwara Temple is the main highlight here with its large Maratha Palace complex. Thanjavur is dotted with beautiful living temples in the entire region.

Chettinadu-Thanjavur.PNG

Day 9 : Kumbakonam

Today is a classic ride where we pass through small villages and see plenty of rice fields on one side and the river Kaveri flowing on the other.

Thanjavur-Kumbakonam.PNG

Day 10 : Pondicherry

The ride to Pondicherry is slightly long but not difficult. It’s easy to pace up given that there are no major climbs. You will find fishing villages and salt plains, as you ride along the breezy sea. A former French colony, Pondicherry is a quaint seaside town with cobble-stoned boulevards, bright cafes, buildings remnant of French architecture, and the famous Aurobindo Ashram. The town was distinctly divided into the Black (local) and White (for Europeans) town and has a vast amount of history and architectural interest.

Kumbakonam-Pondicherry.PNG

Day 11 : Pondicherry

Today's ride is optional. You can plan your own day today or ride with us to Auroville. A unique township, Auroville was constructed to include communities from all over the world, based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities. It has ballooned to encompass more than 80 rural settlements spread over 20km and about 1800 residents. If you’re really interested in the philosophy it’s worth the ride out to the visitors center to find out how it all works and eat some great food at the café.

You can also try your hand at surfing in the mild waves of the Tamil Nadu coast or take a quick dip with scuba experts on this day.

Itinerary Image

Day 12 : Mahabalipuram

Pondicherry-Mahabalipuram.PNG

Day 13 : Chennai

Mahabalipuram is a very small town, most of which you can cover on foot. It wakes up to the sound of sculptors’ chisels on granite, creating impressive sculptors, which make for great souvenirs. You can browse hassle-free and buy from the fixed-price Poompuhar Handicrafts Emporium or from the craft shops that line the main roads. Explore the lighthouse and take a guided trip to the temples of Mahabalipuram.

After the morning exploration of Mahabalipuram’s age-old temples, we take a transfer to Chennai. Explore a bit of Chennai if you have the time. The hot sultry seaside city represents a wonderful cusp of traditions and contemporary lifestyle. Visit the busy Mylapore temple area to see pilgrims buzzing in and out of the famous temple and the streets drenched in a splash of color.

A great tour

We loved getting food in the villages on the road (both when the driver/guide stopped to get it and when we stopped and ate at the place) - idly, dosa, etc. - as well as the fresh fruit and lime juice the guides provided. The schedule was good. We appreciated Dibin adding extra kilometers to the planned routes based on our wish to ride further. He found excellent routes. Overall a great tour.

Located 140 km from Karaikudi, Rameshwaram is a small island and a pilgrimage center connected to the mainland via the famous Pamban Bridge. The town of Rameswaram and the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple find mention in the Hindu epic Ramayana where it is said that Lord Rama, the King of Ayodhya offered prayers to Lord Shiva here in Rameswaram after his victory in the kingdom of Lanka.

Also, Lord Rama along with Lord Hanuman and his monkey clan built the famous Ram Setu across the sea to be able to reach Lanka and free Sita from the clutches of the demon King Ravana. Since time immemorial, Rameshwaram has been on the list of Hindu pilgrims and travelers who choose to visit this holy place in India at least once a year.

The beautiful architecture of the temples and the timeless beauty of the beaches are bound to fill you with an absolute sense of wonder. A ride across the human-made Pamban Bridge is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in India. Another major point of interest in Rameshwaram is the famous Dhanushkhodi Beach. Until recently, the beach was well-known for a temple and a church which, however, got washed away in a cyclone in 1964, leaving behind ruins. Rameshwaram tourism is not just about the temple and worship. Head down to the farthest point of southern India and explore its untouched beauty.

Yercaud Bike Tour

Adventure travel at it’s best! I have done three different tours with Unventured now (and definitely the number will go up in future). First started with the the day tour of “Treasures of Nandi Cycling Trail” and enjoyed riding around the Nandi hills, learning about the people living in the villages around Nandi and historical heritage of Nandi. The second was a weekend getaway to Yercaud. Starting from Salem and cycling all the way up to Yercaud with some intense climbs and hair-pin bends is a wonderful experience. The third was a weeklong Bhutan Bike and Hike Tour. Cycling in Bhutan and seeing the country is a serene experience. Why I love traveling with Unventured? 1. Commitment to traveling green. Try to avoid use of plastics as much as possible. 2. Conscious effort to contribute to the local economy and work with local people everywhere we visit 3. Hassle free cycling experience. All the bikes are in great condition and here I can boast that in Bhutan we rode on KTM MTBs! And we always had support vehicles with us throughout the ride, so we don’t have to worry about food/water on the way. We ride comfortably and stop to enjoy the surroundings wherever we want to take pictures.

You will be redirected to your dashboard shortly. We will also call you back in 24 hrs .

  • 14 Wheels, 11 Souls, One Dream: The Epic Road Trip Down South!

27 Mar 2023

This is not simply a travel diary, but each word denotes the happiness in fulfilling a long cherished dream. Traveling has always been a passion. But the real stint of ‘life on two wheels’ actually began to thrill when the epic Malayalam movie NPCB was released. As a child, I would stand on the road, watch riders ride with glory on two wheels, wave at them and dream. The dream of being among them, the dream of being one of them, the dream of being a rider one day. The child in me grew and the dreams too grew with him.

The wait was over and finally, I could see my dream coming alive, the road trip was happening! I was ready along with my 10 friends for an epic trip from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by road.

Check Out Our Amazing 4 Days Tamil Nadu Road Trip

Day 1: Arrival in Thrissur Day 2: Drive to Udumalpett and sightseeing Day 3: Visit to Kodaikanal Lake, Guna Caves, and the Fairy Falls Day 4: Drive to Ooty, sightseeing, and departure

Day One: Get Set Go!

And the journey begins

After days of planning, discussions, route redirections, people coming in and going out of the group, reasons big and small, 11 men went to sleep on 13th August with the dream of kissing the roads, the following morning. Travelling thousands of kilometers wasn’t what mattered, waking up at 4 AM and getting ready was what troubled them.

With sleep yet to retrieve and the sun yet to wake up, they packed their bags, tightened their jackets and the 3 Enfields, 3 KTMs and a Honda left for the road trip. Engines roared, gears shifted and the trip was on!

The bikes sped past the college gates, onto the bypass and fixed their wheels straight on the highway to Thrissur. The first destination was Athirapally waterfalls. With the morning cold troubling us, getting over 70 kph was tough. The sun as still asleep, the bikes crossed the Calicut borders and entered Malappuram , two hours continuous ride from there and we reached the cultural capital, Thrissur.

The beautiful Athirapally waterfalls

With our stomachs yearning for food, we had to stop for a while to find something to eat. Hotel Bharat served us hot dosas and vadas and the sip of hot tea swept away the sleep that was still lingering in our eyes. Fresh, we set the wheels on the road again. Thrissur- Ernakulam highway was so tempting that the speed limit that we set was soon forgotten. The speedometer raced past the hundred mark with ease. Once the highway was over and we entered the lone road to the falls, the speed returned to its limits.

By noon, after a small lunch near the falls, we set out again for our next destination, Valparai . It was already 2 PM and we had 95 km to cover before sunset. We were on our way and it started raining. We were so helpless and there was no place to halt, we let the rain wash us all the way. With the roads so narrow and the rain reluctant to retreat, we reached the hilltop much later than we expected. A small tea break provided us the information that Munnar was having repeated showers. Irritated by the rains, we decided to drop Munnar from the plan.

What an Idea Sirji

Next was a visit to the Sholayar dam that gave time to enjoy some photography. After sunset, we decided to call it a day and rest. A small dormitory, comfortable enough for eleven of us was sheltering us for the night. It was a cold night, we ate what we got, alarms were set and tired after the journey we soon dozed off.

Day Two: Kodaikanal Here We Come

A beautiful shot of the sunrise

Sharp at 6 AM the alarms went off, we ditched it to enjoy another hour’s sleep. After grabbing a bite, we were back on track by 8.30 AM. We bid goodbye to the beautiful Valparai hills and slowly turned our wheels towards the 41 hair pin road that leads to Pazhani.

The bikes, just like the ants on a rope, started descending the hill, one following the other, twisting, turning, gears shifted all together, one behind the other. We stopped on the way for tea and photography sessions, and after a two-hour ride we reached the bottom.

The bottom of the hill greeted us with a small yet beautiful waterfall, monkey falls . It was very crowded, which shortened our halt there. Udumalpett was our next destination and we had the clock ticking so that our Muslim friends could make it in time for their Friday prayers.

A beautiful shot of Monkeys in the Hilss

The view of the Pazhani hills and the temple were quite tempting , but the hot sun and the 100 steps to the hill top made us drop the plan of visiting it.

We turned our wheels to our next destination- Kodaikanal. On this bike ride to Kodaikanal we had 70 km to cover, but the hot sun made us take a halt. We took rest under the trees on the road and stayed there until the sun began its ride towards the west.

Road Trip to Ooty

We again set off and started climbing the hills. The roads were narrow, with pits here and there and a deep valley on its side making it a risky ride up the hill. On the way, we halted at a place which appeared like a small market with few shops, we all had a cup of coffee.

We then continued our trip to the queen of hill stations, which was just 15 km away now. By the time we reached Kodaikanal , it was already dark hence we took shelter in a nice cottage near the lake. The tired hearts and engines, both wished for a night full of sleep. Stomach full of food, and an hour or more of useless talks, we retired for the day. Our Kodaikanal road trip had finally ended after a long day.

Day Three: Flat Tyre Leads To Change In Plans

View from the hills in Kodaikanal

Two days and 500 km, the ride had definitely slowed down a bit. A good night’s sleep in the cold mist filled hills of Kodaikanal refreshed the riding spirits in all of us. We were again ready for the freedom ride and it was a great day to get started as it was Independence Day.

We visited the Kodaikanal lake, Guna caves and the fairy falls . After a quick tea and snacks session from a small shop and we left for Ooty. The aim was to reach before the day ends. We followed the same road that we took to climb up the hills, till Pazhani. On our way down, we could see a number of riders proudly accelerating upwards. Though strangers, yet we shared the smiles that gave a feeling of brotherhood. After an hour or so, we were down the hills.

We travelled some distance more towards Pazhani and then we observed that one of our bullets had a flat tyre . There were no shops in the vicinity. We rested on the roadside, and few of us went in search of a mechanic. A while later they came back with two mechanics, who were clueless about repairing a Thunderbird.

Biker Gang on the Way to Ooty

Almost two and half hours, the issue was resolved and we again set our wheels on the road . Our plans altered, and we thought of finishing the day at Coimbatore. The roads were smooth, straight and were free from traffic. What more should the riders need! Hence for the first time in the journey, we ignored the speed limits and accelerated away to glory. We reached Coimbatore by 6 p.m.

After resting for an hour and hogging on to some food from the fun mall in Coimbatore, we continued our journey towards Ooty . The night ride was just beautiful and by 10 PM, we reached Mettupalayam. We were all so tired that we couldn’t even move another inch. It took us some time to find a place to stay, once we reached the rooms, we were all fast asleep.

Day Four: When Dream Comes Alive

Elephants crossing the road to Ooty

We started our final day by 8 AM and it was a three-hour ride to Ooty. The road to Ooty was full of fellow riders and the sight of a wild yak on the road, we realized that ditching Ooty the night before was a good decision . The train from Coonoor to Ooty, garden and lake all were responsible for making our trip to Ooty memorable.

The entire experience was mesmerizing and that is why we never wanted to come back. Since that was not possible, we chose the longest way possible to return . Instead of the Ooty- Gudalur road, we decided to take the Bandipur and return through Gundalpet. The ride through the Bandipur forests was exciting. The fear of wild animals crossing our path added thrill to our adventure. Talking of adventure, can’t really miss out on the life-threatening episode we experienced . One of our riders was foolish enough to sound blow the horn in front of an elephant group on the road side. The elephants came running towards us and for a second we thought we would all be dead .

Biker gang on the way to Tamil Nadu

Somehow we escaped and we dared not to stop again in the forest. Once we were out of the forests, the bikes slowed down and at the same time 60-70 bullets raced past us , everybody was enjoying their freedom. We tried but couldn’t match the speed of those experienced riders. We soon reached the Kerala borders.

A cup of coffee and we started our journey back to the hostel from Wayanad . We travelled down the Thamarassery Churam and the rain began pouring down. We were all silent, the dream was finally coming to end, we never wished for that.

James Road Trip To Ooty

Another hour and we were all back in the vicinity of our college. One last acceleration, gears shifted and we were all back in our hostels.

Road Trip on bike from Bangalore to Kodaikanal

Photo of Rahul Sharma

Kodaikanal was in my mind from past 6 months. Finally this was the day when I was leaving for Kodaikanal.

My other friends suggested me not to travel to kodaikanal by bike as it is very far, also there are 2 girls with us but I love long road trip on bike.

We were four people(2 boys and 2 girls ), we left from kormangala, Bangalore at around 12:30 A.M.

We planned to leave at 10:30 P.M previous evening but it was raining very badly that day so we left at 12:30 A.M next day.

We took N.H 44 (sri nagar-kanyakumari highway) from Bangalore to reach kodaikanal via Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Karur - Dindigul - Kodaikanal.

Total distance from Bangalore to Kodaikanal through this route is 465 K.M

An alternate way was also there with 410 K.M through state highway 83A  from Dharmapuri through Erode.

We took the longer way as we thought national highway will be of good condition and safe, as we were travelling in night.

As soon as we reached Hosur which is 40 KM from Bangalore it started raining again. We stopped at a petrol pump for around 1 hour. Rain Stopped at at around 2:15 AM .

At 9 AM we reached Salem which is approx half of the kodaikanal. in salem we had our breakfast and took rest for around 1 hr also we clicked some pics there.

At 10:00 AM we left from Salem, As soon as we left from salem weather became very hot. In morning it was very easy for us to ride the bike but when weather became hot we started feeling very tired.

By the time we reached Dindigul it was 12:30 PM and we were fully tired. Temperature was very high. Kodaikanal is 100KM from Dindigul.

From Dindigul we took NH 183 till katturroad Arch and from there we took state highway 156 toward kodaikanal.

After Katturroad arch weather became warm , we were able to see the hills after traveling 40 km through hills we reached kodaikanal at 3:30 PM.

After reaching kodaikanal we started looking for hotel to say as we didn't booked hotel in advance because we checked 2 days before rooms were not available online.

We searched hotel for 2 hours but we didn't found any hotel to stay. Due to some permission issue 90% hotels of kaidaikanal were seized and remaining hotels were fully occupied.

As we didn't had lunch that day so we though of having luch first. After lunch we again started asking people for room but we didn't found even single room .

Till 10PM we kept searching rooms, finally we met one person who told he has a room with single bed and rent is 5k for one night. We agreed but after talking with property owner he told us that room has been already booked by someone.

We became very frustrated, Also we started feeling scared as it was 11:30 PM by that time and we were fully tired.

Only option left with us was going 40Km down to Katturoad where we might found hotel to stay. It was scary for us to travel back 40 km through hills at 12:00 midnight. Also it was raining very badly so there were chances that bike may get skid.

Photo of Road Trip on bike from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by Rahul Sharma

We started feeling awkward standing there at road s hops were shutting down.

We were left with no other option also we could not spend whole night on road so we decided to go back 40km down.

At 12:00 AM we left from kodaikanal, it took us 2 hrs to cover 40 KM .

After reaching Katturoad we were happy that finally we will get some place to sleep. But our bad luck there also we didn't found any hotel to stay.

We travelled back 60 KM more and reached Dindigul again. There we found a hotel Parsons Court. We booked 2 rooms for 3500 Rs each. By the time we reached this hotel it was 4:30 in the morning.

After going to our rooms we slept till 2Pm . After that we went for lunch and in evening we just went to roam around in the city.

Parsons Hotel was very clean and nice though it was little expensive.

We thought of leaving from Dindigul next morning at 4 AM.

At 4:30 AM we left from Dindigul toward Banglore. We tried to cover as much as possible before sun becomes hot.

That that weather was not hot, so we didn't faced much difficulty.

At 2:00 PM we reached back Bangalore. :) )

Note: Kodaikanal trip was a bad experience for us just because we didn't booked room in advance. So if you are thinking of visiting Kodaikana then please do advance hotel booking . If you don't have a confirm booking them please don't visit Kodiakanal especially if you are traveling with family or girlfriend. Otherwise you will face lot of difficulty there.

Total cost for this trip was Rs 7500 in which bike petrol was of Rs 2200. My bike was Yamaha Fz.
