The Bay of Fires in Tasmania as seen on our Tasmania tours

  • Tasmania Travel & Tours

Beijing, Amsterdam, San Fran… Hobart? You’d better believe it. In 2013, Lonely Planet, citing the city’s growing gallery and gastronomy scene, ranked Tasmania’s quaint capital one of the world’s top ten cities.

You’ll find no quarrel with us on this point, other than to add that Tasmania’s natural assets are no less worthy of worldly acclaim. From fairly unpromising beginnings (it was founded by the Brits as a penal colony), Tasmania has developed into one of Australia’s most treasured travel destinations. Boasting some of Australia’s finest beaches, mistiest mountaintops, loneliest patches of wilderness and most enigmatic/elusive/endangered/extinct animals, this island state is a nature lover’s wonderland. Tasmania travel highlights

The Tarkine

The Tarkine

Containing within its bounds approximately 1,800 square km of rainforest, 60 species of rare, threatened or endangered flora and fauna and a high concentration of aboriginal sites, the Tarkine is one of Tassie’s greatest natural treasures.

Hiking in Cradle Mountain

Hiking in Cradle Mountain

Albeit among stiff competition, Cradle Mountain is Tasmania’s finest place for hiking – if not Australia’s. Choose from leisurely strolls along elevated boardwalks to intermediate overnight hikes to the 80 km long Overland Track.

A toast to Wineglass Bay

A toast to Wineglass Bay

From Freycinet’s breathtaking lookout, Wineglass Bay looks like it belongs in the Whitsundays. Climb up to one of many vantage points for that no-filter-needed photo, or cool off in some of the clearest waters you’ll ever likely enter.

Launceston

Tasmania’s only inland city, Launceston charms with its attractive riverside setting, elegant 19th Century architecture, picturesque alpine backdrop and nearness to the vineyards of Tamar Valley.

The Henty Dunes

The Henty Dunes

Reaching heights of 30 metres and stretching for 15 km along Ocean Beach, the Henty Dunes are the place to get sand in all the wrong spots. Choose between tobogganing, quad biking and sandboarding.

Tasmania tour reviews

Trip rating, time of year, esperance & southwest adventure , december 2019.

Thanks Adventure Tours for managing our itinerary during the tour so as to keep us safe and to ensure a good experience even with the worst fire season known in Australia unfolding throughout the nation in the summer of 2020. Some of your tours were cancelled where necessary. I felt we were in good hands throughout.

What people are saying

“Great tour. Awesome tour guide and tour group. Amazing places. Breathtaking waterfalls. Beautiful scenery. Heaps of fun. Options to suit various needs / fitness/ abilities. We were extremely well looked after by Evan our tour guide who gave us interesting and entertaining commentary and lots of opportunities to experience the beauty and wonder of Tasmania’s natural landscape, wilderness and wildlife. “

“ It was my second time exploring Tasmania with Under Down Under. Both tour guides, Tim and Keygan, impressed me greatly with their extensive knowledge of Tasmania. I learned a lot during the tour and will surely come back. I highly recommend this fantastic experience. Thanks again, I had a great holiday! “

“Our 10 day tour has been fantastic. Justin (guide) was forever cheerful and went out of his way to accommodate our preferences. It’s so unusual to have a guide who can let the itinerary ebb and flow a bit (but still seem to get where we need to be when we need to be there). And Tassie itself is amazing. Just beautiful. I loved this holiday and I’m so sorry it’s finished. “

You’ll have a welcome meeting at 9:30 am to meet your fellow travellers, followed by a short walk to ningina tunapri – TMAG's Tasmanian Aboriginal culture gallery – to start your journey off by connecting to the Traditional Owners of Tasmania. Then, leave Hobart behind, and head to the historic town of Richmond – home to over 40 heritage buildings. Stop for lunch and walk the charming streets before continuing north. On the way, there are optional stops at a local whiskey, gin and vodka distillery or at a winery. After your tasting, continue to the coastal town of Bicheno and your accommodation for the next two nights.

Join your leader for the walk to Wineglass Bay, voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches, then after lunch follow the path up to Cape Tourville Lighthouse. Pose for a picture (or two) in front of the panoramic views, and then head back to Bicheno. This evening, there’s the option for you to join a guided tour for a closer look at the life of the area’s Little Penguins as they return nightly to their rookeries to feed their young.

  • Freycinet National Park - Wineglass Bay Lookout walk

If you are interested in doing the guided penguin tour tonight, please book directly through the operator's website: bichenopenguintours.com.au. Please note that this activity can sell out far in advance, so it is recommended you make a booking well ahead of time.

This morning, you’ll depart Bicheno and follow the Great Eastern Drive until you encounter the peaceful northeast corner of Tasmania. The Bay of Fires is remarkable for its long stretches of dazzling white beaches, shimmering turquoise waters, coastal heath and woodlands abundant with wildlife and orange coloured granite rocks. Take on one of the multiple walking paths, then head to St Marys – a heritage hinterland town surrounded by natural beauty. Your next stop is Campbell Town, steeped in convict history. Then, visit some local dairy producers to sample their cheese and ice cream. Later, arrive at your accommodation in Sheffield. The former hydroelectric hub has reinvented itself as an arts community. Always carry additional warm clothing, including a waterproof outer layer.

From Tullah, enjoy a full day exploring Tasmania’s West Coast. You’ll drive to a range of lookout stops before entering the enchanting takayna/Tarkine region. The largest tract of temperate rainforest in Australia, the Tarkine is alive with unique creatures and habitats not found anywhere else on earth, and is home to vast forests of myrtle, leatherwood and pine trees – living links to Gondwanaland that it once shared with Patagonia and New Zealand. Take a walk among the pristine rainforest and discover Tasmania's highest waterfall encased in a lush fern forest and rocky cliffs. Then, take the road to the very edge of the west coast, and your accommodation for the night in Strahan.

  • Tarkine - Rainforest Hike to Montezuma Falls

Your driving time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Start the final day on the Apple Isle by passing through Queenstown’s eroded landscape of treeless hills, then stretch your legs on some great short walks along the Franklin River and to Nelson Falls. This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our ‘Moderate’ and ‘Challenging’ levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with several challenging stages. These trips can involve more physical challenges such as tougher terrain, harsh conditions or high ascents. Self guided adventures rated moderate to challenging involve carrying a full pack and being self-reliant (with emergency support available).
