The Best Tennis Games on PS4

Tennis World Tour 2 (1)

Tennis games – or should we say decent  tennis games – are a rare breed on PS4, for some reason.

Back in the days of PS3, we had too many to choose from. Virtua Tennis, Top Spin, EA’s Grand Slam… even Sega had its own title, with Superstars Tennis! For the first few years of the PS4’s life, it had no tennis games whatsoever. Thankfully, for those of us who love the racket sport, tennis games finally started to trickle in – but our selection is still rather limited.

If you want the joy of hitting that fuzzy yellow ball without the hassle of going to visit an actual tennis court, look no further. We’ve rounded up a list of the best games to capture the sport of tennis on PS4 in all its glory. We’ve tried to weed out the not-so-good games, leaving only the best.

Read on through to see our pick of the best tennis games on PS4.

Want to support GameSpew? If you decide to buy any of the games on this list, please consider using our affiliate links, included below each entry. It won’t cost you anything extra, but we’ll get a small slice of the purchase. Thank you.

1. ao tennis 2.

Released in 2018, AO International Tennis wasn’t particularly well-received. In fact, at launch, it was pretty much deemed unfinished – and while developed Big Ant Studios eventually fixed most of its glaring issues through patches, it never quite recovered from its initial reception.

Thankfully, Big Ant has followed up with AO Tennis 2 . Released in January 2020, it’s a much better game than its predecessor straight out of the gate. With a fully-fledged career mode, an extensive character creator and a plethora of game modes and training to take part in, it’s one of the most comprehensive tennis games you’ll find on PS4. There’s also a wealth of professional tennis players in the game, with their likenesses faithfully recreated thanks to motion capture and 3D scanning.

2. Super Tennis Blast

Don’t let  Super Tennis Blast ‘s cutesy cartoon art style put you off; this is a serious tennis game in disguise. Featuring a traditional scoring system, the game’s CPU opponents mean business. Even when you set the game on one of the easiest difficulties.

It’s great fun and easy to pick up, though. There’s plenty of customisation options for those wanting a harder challenge. And those wanting just a bit of fun can choose their avatar from dozens of pre-set models. Best of all, you can play in local multiplayer with a friend – or three, if you fancy a game of doubles. There’s a full range of moves available, with different face buttons doing volleys, backspins, lobs and other kinds of fancy moves so you can feel like a true tennis pro.

3. Tennis World Tour

When it first launched, Tennis Word Tour wasn’t received particularly well – and for good reason. It was essentially unfinished, with numerous issues. You couldn’t even play online, which is quite a big deal in a game where multiplayer is a key element. Thankfully, since its release, Tennis World Tour has had more time and love poured into it, and many improvements have been made. Now, it’s one of the best tennis games on PS4 if you’re looking for a serious game. It might not quite live up to the standards of the excellent Top Spin series, but it’s certainly not bad.

Tennis World Tour features a decent career mode that sees you create your own player. Starting from the bottom of the league, you’ll work your way up to tennis greatness, playing in a variety of locations and against plenty of opponents of differing skill levels. There’s also quick play and online play options if you don’t want to bother with the whole career ladder business. The basic version of the game  can be picked up relatively cheap now , and the newer Roland-Garros Edition is more expensive  but comes with a wealth of DLC.

We think its better than its sequel, which scored just a paltry 4/10 from us thanks to its timing-based shot system, which really missed the mark.

4. Everybody’s Tennis/Hot Shots Tennis

We’ve all heard of Everybody’s Golf , but tennis?  Everybody’s Tennis , or  Hot Shots Tennis  as its known in North America, is a re-release of the PS2 classic that became available on PS4 in 2016. It’s never had quite the same following as its golfing counterpart, but it aims to bring the same level of fun and accessibility to tennis.

If you’re looking for a serious tennis sim on PS4, Everybody’s Tennis  is not it. But if you want something that’s cutesy and easy to pick up, then this may be the game you’re looking for.

Of course, since it was originally a PS2 game, its graphics aren’t exactly cutting edge, but thanks to its cartoon art style it’s not so much an issue. Whether you’re playing alone or with friends in doubles, Everybody’s Tennis  has plenty of fun to offer.

5. Timber Tennis: Versus

Remember Timber Man , the game from 2015 that hard you chopping word in humorous arcade fashion? Well, Timberman is back, but now he’s trying his hand at tennis. Timber Tennis: Versus takes the same arcade-style gameplay and humour and applies it to a tennis court. It’ll have you using a range of power-ups and special moves in order to defeat your opponents.

While it has the basics of a tennis match – passing a ball to and fro across a court – it’s certainly not the most serious game of the sport on this list. But with tonnes of characters to unlock and a variety of weird and wonderful opponents to face off against, it  is  a lot of fun.

And it’s only £1.69 to buy on the PSN store. So you really can’t go wrong, can you?

6. Dream Match Tennis VR

If the ‘VR’ on the end of its title didn’t give it away,  Dream Match Tennis VR  is a virtual reality game, so you’ll need a PSVR headset to be able to enjoy it. Released in 2018, it puts you on the tennis court in a first person perspective and aims to fully simulate the experience of a real game of tennis.

If you’ve got motion controllers, that means actually swinging your racket. Real ball physics have been recreated in  Dream Match Tennis VR , too, meaning that topspins and slices can be performed accurately – if you’ve got the skill, of course! The game also boasts more intelligent AI opponents, making for more challenging and rewarding matches.

So, if you have PSVR and fancy playing a game on the courts, you’ll undoubtedly find a great experience here. It’s one of the best tennis games on PS4 – providing you’ve got a headset, of course.

7. Racket Fury: Table Tennis

Another game that requires PSVR to play,  Racket Fury: Table Tennis  brings the tabletop version of tennis to life by pitting you against a range of… robots. Sure, why wouldn’t robots be good at tennis?

Table tennis tends to be a little more accessible to newcomers than the full-sized version of the game, and so  Racket Fury  is pretty easy to get to grips with. Use motion controllers to swing your bat to and fro to hit the ping-pong ball.

But keeping a steady hand and controlled movements is important: the table is much smaller than a full tennis pitch, so swing too wildly and the ball will fly out of bounds. And those robots are better at table tennis than you think:  Racket Fury  proves to be a great challenge. It’s well worth a go if you’d rather play table tennis than the real thing.

8. Tennis in the Face

We’re cheating a little bit here: Tennis in the Face isn’t technically a tennis game in the traditional sense. But it does have “tennis” in the name, and it does involve hitting fluffy yellow balls with a racket.

In  Tennis in the Face , our hero Pete Pagassi (lol) is out to save his city from Explodz, an evil energy drink corporation set to take over the world. It’s his job to destroy Explodz, and his only weapon is a tennis ball and racket. In the style of Angry Birds, its up to you to use a limited number of balls in which to aim and take down all the targets on a level.

It’s a very simple premise, but it’s a lot of fun. There are over 100 bright and bold levels to work through, and whether or not you’re a fan of tennis, it’s well worth picking up. Especially since it’s dirt cheap. If you’re looking for one of the best “serious” tennis games on PS4, this isn’t it, but as far as the fun factor goes, it’s right up there.

The 4 Best Tennis Games On PS4

tennis world tour ps4 game

Tennis on the PlayStation 4 does not have quite the same options as some other sports. That is not to say that there are not some great tennis games, but no huge production companies decided to make a major splash on this platform.

What are the best tennis games on PS4 out right now? Whether a person is looking for simulation, arcade, or even immersion, these stand out as the best of the best currently. With the focus shifting to the PS5, this likely remains the definitive list for tennis fans on the PS4.

1. AO Tennis 2

tennis world tour ps4 game

When Big Ant Studios first released AO Tennis, many people thought it instantly became the best video game on the PlayStation 4 . It was definitely a great option in its own right, and might even technically be #2 if it were included on this list.

However, AO Tennis 2 is even better. They made some slight adjustments here and there, adding new players and several other customization options to make it a more robust game overall. They also listened to fan feedback, and it certainly paid off.

It is not a perfect game by any means, but it does have just about everything a pure tennis fan would like. It has the Australian Open license for real play on the real courts in Melbourne, but people have to use heavily customized options for all the other major tournaments. The community does a good job of creating these lifelike venues, as well as players to use in the game as well.

The career mode is pretty bare-bones, but can capture the attention of people who want to rise up in the ranks. It takes a little bit of time to get to the top, but it is interesting to face off against created and real players. There is an online community that is pretty challenging as well, and to this day, the best competition is found there.

It will be interesting to see if a new version of AO Tennis comes out in the future. There are still some minor gameplay issues that could be fixed, but other than that, It seems like a great step towards a truly revolutionary game on either the PlayStation 4 or the PlayStation 5.

  • Solid player lineup as well as the Australian Open license
  • Tons of customization options for just the right look
  • Top levels are extremely challenging
  • Net play is a little shaky
  • Not a ton of major improvements noticeable when jumping from AO Tennis

2. Tennis World Tour 2

tennis world tour ps4 game

There is certainly a bit of a rivalry between Tennis World Tour and AO Tennis . Both released follow-ups of their initial games, and while Tennis World Tour 2 closed the gap a bit, it is still lagging behind.

Some of the graphics look more impressive, and they have improved the player roster as well. However, the game is a little sluggish and does not feel as realistic as AO Tennis.

Another thing that is lacking with Tennis World Tour is the customization options. Many would like to see more customization options so that it can look like the real thing. Too often, people are stuck playing against made-up, unrealistic characters.

It is hard to recommend Tennis World Tour when AO Tennis does so many things better, but tennis enthusiasts might be wanting to check out both on their own. It is still a solid game, and when messing with sliders, the play changes enough to look a lot like real tennis.

  • Great graphics
  • Improved rosters
  • Lacks realism overall compared to AO Tennis 2
  • Customization is not great

3. Dream Match Tennis VR

Dream Match Tennis VR is the perfect option for players who want to feel like they are actually playing the sport . It is a virtual reality PlayStation 4 game that requires the necessary equipment to get a feel. Having a first-person perspective can be very entertaining, and it works well.

The company did a great job of getting the ball physics down, which adds to the realism overall. There are different levels of challenges, so players will not get bored all that easily. They also have a few sponsorships to go along with the game, which helps to add to the immersion.

Some people do not want to get out there and actually move around when playing a video game, as that is what real tennis is for. With that said, plenty of people are looking for different challenges with a virtual reality setup.

This might be the perfect option as one of the sports that translate well. The controller feels like an actual racquet, and it shows just what potential VR has in the sports gaming world.

  • First-person tennis video gameplay works well
  • Capable of getting a decent workout
  • Continually provides a challenge
  • Must be up and active to play
  • Limited game modes

4. Super Tennis Blast

If the first three games focus on realism, Super Tennis Blast is a very simplistic game that will feel a bit more like an arcade-like game . There are many real types of strokes, but they just might not be looking the best on-screen.

The developers did not spend much time on getting the design just right, but everything else plays as it should.

Not only is the game inexpensive, but it can be very addicting since the gameplay is fast overall. Tennis matches can sometimes take a long time when it is too much like a simulation, which is frustrating for gamers who might not be fully immersed.

This is more of a game that can fit into just about any type of schedule. There is even the opportunity to play very short matches by using different scoring systems.

Think of this game more for casual tennis fans instead of those really into the sport. More intense tennis fans will want a little more licensing and realism to the game, but those who want to battle it out as a fast-paced alternative will be very happy with Super Tennis Blast.

  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to learn
  • Challenging for all types of players
  • No real licensing
  • Feels a little cheap to some

Top Pick: AO Tennis 2

There is just too much to like about AO Tennis 2 , which is why it is the best overall game for the PlayStation 4. While it is a simulation game, there are different levels so that people are never overwhelmed.

There is a challenge for really good players, as well as those just starting. Having a chance to play with licensed pros, or custom-built ones downloaded from the online servers, adds to the overall feel. It is a game worth trying, especially with the different pricing over the years.

Tennis world tour review -- a poorly served return of pro tennis video games.

Tennis World Tour falters in just about every aspect bringing players a disappointing, unsatisfying and monotonous experience.

It has been a few years since we've been graced with a proper professional tennis video game. Not an arcade-esque, cartoonish styling but an accurate representation of the sport. Bigben Interactive and Breakpoint Studio changed that with the release of Tennis World Tour . With a development team comprised of people who worked on the well-received Top Spin series, surely we'd get a game worth your time. Unfortunately, Breakpoint sets us up with an attempt that fails in every facet.

Right at the start, as I loaded into Tennis World Tour ’s menu, I ran into what I would consider one of the more problematic issues with the game. It doesn’t have online multiplayer at launch. The spot the mode occupies states that it is “coming soon.” As of this writing, it has been a few weeks since launch, and it has yet to be implemented.

[pullquote]"If the game's single player options were varied and entertaining, this wouldn't be as much of a problem; that is not the case."[/pullquote]

In general, sports games rely heavily on their online modes to keep players invested until the next title releases the following year. This may be a special case considering it is the first entry but the lack of multiplayer still is disheartening. If the game’s single player options were varied and entertaining, this wouldn’t be as much of a problem; that is not the case.

Local multiplayer is available in the Exhibition mode but only includes singles competition. I understand that Tennis World Tour is attempting to take a more realistic approach; I’m not expecting a bunch of mini-games or goofy takes on the sport. An option to play doubles would have sufficed, giving the game some variety. Instead, the monotony of singles competition takes over Tennis World Tour , not only in its Exhibition mode but also in Career mode.

Career mode is where Tennis World Tour shines, even if it is for just a short moment. You begin by creating a character, man or woman, and customize them to your liking. However, the choices are incredibly limited, letting you only choose between select preset faces, serving styles, and other limited options.

Hilariously, the most customizable feature is how your character groans. Out of all the customizable features, the groan not only has the most options available but allows you to choose how frequently they groan. By the end of the character creation process, no matter how much you try to create something unique, your character will look generic.

After you create your non-descript tennis star, the game takes you to the Career mode hub where you’ll choose to train, rest, play an exhibition match, or partake in a tournament to become the number one tennis player in the world. Doing one of these activities will decrease how rested you are which is indicated by a meter at the top of the screen; to replenish the meter, you’ll need to rest. On paper, this is a great concept but was executed poorly as there doesn’t seem to be any consequences for resting.

As you train and play some matches, your character will level up, in turn giving you attribute points to add to one of three categories: defense, attack, and serve & volley. This will increase your stats and your overall rating. Additionally, you’ll also earn skill cards – which are split into four categories including stamina, power, control, and agility – that will augment certain facets of your game. For example, the power skill “rocket serve” will grant you a 5% power bonus for serving. You can also appoint an agent and coach that give you cash and leveling bonuses respectively.

[pullquote]"However, when I compared the two pieces of gear, the differences between them seem minuscule. In some ways, the tiers are more based on look rather than statistical benefits."[/pullquote]

You will also earn some cash that you can spend on gear. Like Destiny or World of Warcraft , Tennis World Tour has tiered gear indicated by color. As such, you would assume that high tier gear – in this case, purple colored gear – would be better than low or mid-tier gear. However, when I compared the two pieces of equipment, the differences between them seem minuscule. In some ways, the tiers are more based on look rather than statistical benefits.

Similarly to the general concept of Career mode, this is an excellent idea on paper but fails to feel imperative to the game’s loop. There were matches where I saw myself against AI players two or three levels above me and still had no problem defeating them. The skill cards effects never felt like they turned the tide of the game in any significant way. The leveling system seemed more like a façade for its lack of depth by just putting a bunch of arbitrary numbers in front of your face and making them look important.

The lack of features and depth Tennis World Tour has would have been fine if the gameplay was solid. I can get over the simplicity of the game if the actual act of playing was enjoyable. Unfortunately, it is the opposite.

The gameplay isn’t unlike any other tennis game. There are four shot types -- normal, topspin, slice, and lob -- each represented by one of the face buttons. The longer you hold the button, the more powerful the hit is; the harder you hit the ball, the more your stamina will decrease. Stamina affects how fast you run and your accuracy, so theoretically, you don’t want to hit each ball as hard as you can. However, like everything else in this game, stamina doesn’t seem to be an issue. Every match I played, I drained my stamina by the first game and still managed to win with ease.

If anything, you will be held back by the game’s bad animations. Since Tennis World Tour is striving for an authentic tennis experience, the character animations attempt to capture a true-to-life tennis match. As such, your button inputs aren’t immediate; instead of them triggering the shot you want to take, it triggers the animation which is then followed by the shot.

It reminds me of the problem old NBA 2K games had; it favors looks rather than tight mechanics which leads to a frustrating experience. There were multiple occasions where I would move to the area where the ball was going to land, perfectly set up for a shot only for my character to stand there motionless. There were also plenty of times where I hit a ball that I had no chance of hitting. In fact, the ball wouldn’t even hit the racket and make its way to the other side of the court. For a game that is trying to emulate a sport that requires so much precision, it lacks so much of it in its gameplay.

[pullquote]" Tennis World Tour is a disappointment, plain and simple."[/pullquote]

Tennis World Tour ’s presentation is just as monotonous and uninteresting as the rest of the game. The announcers don’t have a lot of dialogue, repeating themselves every single match you play. The various courts you’ll visit are bland, lacking any variety save for its looks; I would assume playing on a clay court would be different than grass, but it all feels the same here. If the plan here was to capture tennis as the most repetitive and boring sport in the world, I’d say this is a very accurate representation.

Tennis World Tour is a disappointment, plain and simple. It's one thing to not have key features at launch, but the absence of solid gameplay puts the final nail in the coffin. It's not only dull with its weak and monotonous presentation but frustrating as you watch your generic created character not swing at a ball they could easily hit across the court. There is something to some of the RPG elements within the career mode, but my progression or "gear" doesn't feel like it affects my character's ability to perform well. Tennis World Tour had the opportunity to become the video game series players go on to play a professional tennis simulation. Instead, we are given a joyless and empty experience.
