Tequendama Falls is a great spot to visit if you're around Bogota . The city may have a lot to offer to its visitors, but this half-day trip is certainly something you'll want to visit if you're craving a bit of nature.

Even though you can't really get close to the waterfall itself, the views are incredible, and there's no hiking involved. Something to keep in mind is that the weather has huge influence in the overall views, but we'll get to that later. Let's start with how to get to Tequendama Falls.

*Please note that this blog post may contain some affiliate links, which we make a small profit on, at zero cost to you.  Links are only used on products & services that we've used and believe in, to give you the best buying experience.  Purchasing from these links helps us to continue providing free travel guides for you- so thank you for your support!

How to Get to Tequendama Falls

To get to Tequendama Falls you can get a ride for the 50 minutes it takes to get there. If you're traveling on a budget or just want to get to experience public transportation, the ride takes a little longer. If you have a car, you can skip the next four paragraphs. The bus network called TransMilenio has exclusive lanes for their buses, as well as the chance of connecting from one to other without having to pay every time you hop on and off.

Tequendama falls bus bridge

Head to the Transmilenio Station in Bogota.

You need to find, depending on where you are, the closest TransMilenio station and get a bus towards San Mateo. In our case, we traveled from La Candelaria so we took the bus F23 until Ricaurte station. From there, we walked along the platform (without leaving it!) and went under a tunnel that connects platforms. The first ride was 15 minutes long.

The Bus Towards San Mateo

Once here, we hopped on to the G43 towards San Mateo (it's the last stop). After you get there, you now have to get off the station, cross the bridge to your right and find any bus that goes to Mesitas. This second bus was 30 mins long.

We have a  non-spammy  weekly newsletter, where we give travel tips, and exclusive content and discounts .

There are only two buses, a blue one from the company TEQUENDAMA and a yellow one from VELOSIBA. Tell them you go to the zoo, as some drivers don't know the waterfall by its name.

Also, make sure you set the price beforehand to avoid getting ripped off. The real price is between 7,000 and 8,000 COP per person, and the ride takes around 30 minutes.

Renting a Car in Bogota

If you don't want to go through the hassle of public transportation, a better option is to rent a car, which can be done either at the airport, or inside the city center.

Here is a site we use for most of our car rentals:

Taking a Tour to Tequendama Falls

Don't want to go on your own? There are also a few different tours that go there. Here are the options:

Tequendama Falls: Food & Beverage

All along the road you will also find simple restaurants to have a bite while enjoying the view of Tequendama Falls. Next to San Mateo station (where you wait for the last bus) there's a mall and a lot of small kiosks where you can get anything from hot dogs to empanadas.

The food, though, may not be the healthiest one out there. Our personal recommendation is to pack some sandwiches or snacks before going to Tequendama Falls. This way you will avoid unhealthy food, as well as to save some cash on the way.

Things to Consider for Tequendama Falls

Here are a few other things to keep in mind when visiting Tequendama Falls.

Salto de Tequendama Danni & Fede

The Clouds Here are Low

Once you get to your destination, there's one thing to wish for: that the clouds aren't low. As you go up in the mountain, you're more likely to find yourself surrounded by clouds that prevent you from enjoying the view of the waterfall. If you go on the weekends, you can visit the Tequendama museum, located next to the viewpoint.

Tequendama Falls clouds

The weather can make a huge difference on your visit.

Have patience, and you may find that the clouds will move out of the way!

The Museum Only Opens on the Weekends

There's a nice, small museum built in an abandoned hotel. The main focus of the hotel is to create consciousness about the ecosystem contamination. It's very nice, but it only opens during the weekends, so keep it in mind if you're visiting during the week.

Tequendama Falls museum

The museum next to Tequendama Falls

There's Not a Lot of Infrastructure

The viewpoint is located just on the side of the road. To get closer to the fall you will have to walk down a little hill, and it can get very slippery. The restaurants are built next to it, but the infrastructure in general is quite basic as well. Nothing bad, but we feel like it's something to have in mind.

Don't have time to read the whole article and want to save it for later? Just pin it!

Want to Use a Bathroom? That Will be 1000 COP

As mentioned above, there isn't a lot of infrastructure. therefore, no public bathrooms can be found. The only ones available are the ones the restaurants offer, so if you have an urgency you will be at their mercy. (Although 1,000 cop are something like 30 cents of a dollar).

The beauty of Tequendama Falls ( Salto del Tequendama in Spanish) is that it’s only actually a simple half day trip from Bogotá , and for the ease of it, Tequendama Falls made it into our list of best day-trips & weekend breaks from Colombia’s capital . This place is dripped in legend as the site from which the native Muísca people jumped to their deaths to escape Spanish slavery (and in indigenous folklore were turned into eagles to be able to fly to freedom), and its reputation for suicide by modern Bogotanos continues today.

Before we get into the nitty gritty details of the day, check out our video of our time at Salto del Tequendama here (p.s. please don’t laugh too hard, this was our first ever video):

Ok ok, you laughed, didn’t you? 😉

After you’ve read this post on Salto del Tequendama, you may also want to have a browse of:

  • Choachí and La Chorrera, Colombia’s tallest waterfall
  • 29 places to go in Colombia: The bucketlist
  • 16 safety tips for Bogotá and beyond

Firstly, why should you visit Salto del Tequendama?

Well, if the images we’ve shown you so far don’t quite get the point across, Salto del Tequendama is a pretty damn epic waterfall. Its levels of cascading mean you can get lost watching the water hit different points. On a misty day, it’s even more enchanting.

The Hotel del Salto that hovers on a cliff’s edge next to the waterfall only adds to the mysterious feel of the place.

And besides, it’s a really easy, cheap way to diversify your stay in Bogotá amidst all the greyness of the city centre.

What’s Hotel del Salto?

Hotel del Salto (not to be confused with Hotel Tequendama , a fully functioning 5* hotel in the city centre) is an iconic part of Tequendama Falls. It’s the only proper brick building you’ll see for miles around Hotel del Salto and has not faltered in its stunning romantic style.

It was originally built in 1928 and became a place for rich Bogotanos to take a break from the city.

Historically, Hotel del Salto was pink, but as part of its ongoing restoration (which apparently is being partially funded by the French government?!) it has now been painted white.

It sits right on the edge of Salto del Tequendama, so the views are second to none.

So can I stay at the hotel at Salto del Tequendama?

Sorry, it’s a no. Hotel del Salto has not been operating as a hotel for decades, but you can still go in to explore. Inside is a museum which is open to the public on weekends. Entry costs 9000 COP and the tour (which is in Spanish) goes through a lot of the preservation work they’ve been doing around the area.

Hotel del Salto is said to have had ghost sightings in the past, but the tour unfortunately doesn’t touch much on that!

If you really love the paranormal, don’t miss the new ghost tour in the city centre of Bogotá which explores the haunted sites of La Candelaria (with a beer!). You can book a place on the tour here .

Does Salto de Tequendama smell?

A little, depending on the day. It is amongst the most contaminated rivers in the world, after all.

Fun fact: the reason Tequendama Fall’s Hotel del Salto closed half a century ago was because the smell from the river (which carries much of Bogotá’s sewage) got too overpowering.

You’ll be glad to hear that efforts are now being made to clean up said river, and while there was a horrible smell in the surrounding countryside during the journey, the Salto del Tequendama itself didn’t smell at all when we visited.

Is there anywhere to eat nearby?

Depending on how many photos you tend to take, and how long you wish to spend admiring the view, you probably won’t need to stay at Salto del Tequendama for that long.

There are plenty of typical grills with baked goods to chill out in for half an hour or so – we recommend the café tinto with panela (unrefined sugar cane). Take a few thousand pesos in cash and get yourself a snack with a view 🙂

Colombian street food | Morcillo | Guide to Tequendama Falls | Bogotá day trips: Salto del Tequendama | Colombia travel guides by Cuppa to Copa Travels

What’s the best time to visit Salto del Tequendama?

The day you go to Salto del Tequendama depends on whether you want to go inside the supposedly-haunted Hotel del Salto – this is only open on weekends. If you’re just there for the view, take a trip down on a weekday and enjoy the place pretty much to yourself.

The viewing platform is all open at all times with no entrance restrictions or fees, so time of day doesn’t matter.

In terms of the best month to visit Salto del Tequendama, any month except December, apparently. A single internet source has reported that the river tends to dry up during this time, but we went during February (at which point we found the water of Tequendama Falls to be very much flowing!) so can’t verify that claim.

If Bogotá has experienced some decent rain in the day or 2 leading up to your visit, we imagine it’d be fine in December anyway.

How do I get to Tequendama from Bogotá?

Salto del Tequendama sits some 30km outside of the centre of Bogotá. Now, you can get from central Bogotá to Tequendama Falls via Uber which will cost around 70,000COP each way, but we like a challenge, and instead chose to get to Salto del Tequendama from Bogotá by public bus.

There are two options, the first is for those already central in the city, e.g. in Teusaquillo or Chapinero. The second option is for those already south in the city, such as La Candelaria.

Both options take around 2 hours, though you may shave off some time if you don’t need too many Transmilenio changes to reach the start-point of the the second option.

salto del tequendama bus

1. SALTO DE TEQUENDAMA FROM SALITRE TERMINAL DE BUSES:

  • In Salitre Bus Terminal, go to the windows of either Cootranstequendama or Flota La Magdalena
  • Buy tickets for one of their hourly buses that passes Salto del Tequendama. This should cost around 12,000 pesos
  • Tell the bus assistant to stop at Salto del Tequendama – it’ll be really obvious when you get there as you’ll see the white Hotel del Salto. Et voila!

2. SALTO DEL TEQUENDAMA FROM FURTHER SOUTH (e.g. La Candelaria)

  • Download the free TransMi app
  • Use the app to work out how to get to San Mateo Transmilenio station from where you’re staying (don’t panic, it’s a good app!)
  • If you haven’t already got a TransMilenio card, you’ll need to buy one from an official station stall. Top up the card there too (one journey of any distance costs 2,300 pesos in 2019, including changes as long as you don’t exit the barriers. You can buzz more than one person in using the same card)
  • Find your bus number and make your way down to San Mateo
  • At San Mateo, cross one of the highway bridges; you’ll come out near a shopping centre
  • Cross the first two lanes of the highway and stand on the central reservation – you need to flag buses from the far lane
  • There is no official bus stop, so just wave down any bus going to Mesitas (blue Tequendama or yellow Velosiba companies offer this)
  • Tell the bus assistant to stop at Salto del Tequendama
  • We paid 7000 pesos on the way there, and oddly 6000 on the way back. Who knows?!

Guide to Tequendama Falls | Bogota day trips: Salto de Tequendama | Colombia travel guides

How do I return to the city from Salto del Tequendama?

When you’re ready to leave Salto del Tequendama to get back to Bogotá, stand on the inner-side of the road and flag down pretty much any bus; they should all be going to the capital.

Just tell the driver when you want to get off!

What if I don’t want to travel independently to Salto del Tequendama?

Worry not, there is a very well-rated tour which includes both Salto del Tequendama and a coffee hacienda visit from Bogotá.

They’ll pick you up straight from your accommodation and offer an English-speaking guide throughout the 8-hour day trip.

Is it true the falls are completely dry in December? I read this on Wikipedia but haven’t seen any other information about it elsewhere.

Hmm, not that we’ve heard of. Looking at some Bogotá news articles, it dried up due to the water being stored in the Muña reservoir to use for energy, but that was only for a short while in 2010. It’ll be much more powerful in rainy season, but we went at a particularly dry point when it hadn’t rained in a long while and it still has lots of water. We visited La Chorrera the following week and that was completely dry. Maybe the wiki contributor got their wires crossed?!

I love legends and folklore and this waterfall seems to have them. A half day visit to Tequendama Falls from Bogota seems an ideal trip to make.

And mega easy, too! 🙂

These simply stunning falls are around 90 minutes from the city centre. And can easily and safely be reached by public transport.

The name Tequendama means ‘he who precipitated downwards’ in Chibcha – the language of the native Muisca people. And, it couldn’t be more fitting to describe this 400-foot waterfall that thunderously crashes over the cliff edge.

This complete guide has been curated to answer all your questions. That way, you’ll have a fun, easy and stress-free day out to the waterfalls and the nearby abandoned hotel…

The Salto del Tequendama falls on a clearer day, the different cascade levels are visible between the clouds

About the Tequendama Falls

Located just outside Colombia’s capital city of Bogotá, these waterfalls are some of the country’s most spectacular . What’s more, they’re easy to reach by public or private transport and can be seen directly from the roadside. No hiking is required!

With an impressive height of over 400 feet (132 metres to be exact), you might be surprised to learn that the waterfalls are seldom visited by tourists in Bogotá . In fact, many holidaymakers, backpackers and travellers won’t have even heard of Salto del Tequendama even after spending time in the city.

But, as a result, the viewing areas of the waterfalls are rarely busy . An exception is weekends with great (clear) weather.

So, you’ll have the chance of unspoiled views of this stunning waterfall surrounded by lush green nature. All without having to queue for photos, pay an entrance fee or feel rushed in your experience.

However, it isn’t possible to view Cascada Tequendama from its base inside the almost-vertical walls of the small canyon. And neither is it possible to swim in the plunge pool – although not that you’d want to…

The Bogotá River, on which the Tequendama Falls are located, is one of the most polluted in the world . Sewage and rubbish continue to contaminate the river despite attempts to improve water quality.

Because of this, the waterfalls are known to smell rather unpleasant .

I visited in 2022 and didn’t notice any smell at the waterfalls themselves from the viewpoints.

But, it was very noticeable slightly upstream where the road passes close to the river. Here, there is also clear foaming and pollution in the water, which is always sad to see.

The Bogota river - heavily poluted and foamy in places

What is the abandoned hotel next to the waterfall?

Also overlooking Tequendama Colombia is the striking five-storey Hotel del Salto . Perhaps most famous for being an abandoned hotel , the building was originally designed to be a train station .

The building of the train station – with a hotel – took place between 1923 and 1927 and that usage continued until the 1950s, connecting the waterfall with Bogotá.

The once-booming success of the railroads in Colombia was reduced to financial losses and poor returns on the large investment needed to construct them. By 1950, the railways ceased operation having failed to connect this vast country with any financial value.

From then, the building became known as Hotel del Salto – a restaurant and hotel for the wealthy Bogotanos. Sadly, from the 1980s until the early 2010s the building sat completely abandoned.

Tequendama Falls Museum

While looks can be deceiving, today, the building is no longer abandoned thanks to restoration work over the last 10 years. Now, the building is home to the Tequendama House Museum , which has exhibitions and a coffee shop.

On a misty day, you might be forgiven for still thinking this is an abandoned, haunted, old hotel. Especially since the museum is only open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (9.00 am to 4.00 pm) .

Entrance to the Hotel del Salto to learn about its history costs 12,000 COP , with children under 8 entering free. This price includes a self-guided audio tour that’s easy to follow by scanning QR codes throughout the museum.

Guided tours lasting 45 to 60 minutes are available and these start every 20 minutes, with the last tickets sold at 3.30pm. However, the tour is only available in Spanish .

No photographs are allowed to be taken inside the Tequendama Falls Museum.

The Hotel del Salto on a foggy day in Bogota

Best Time to Visit Tequendama Falls

Perhaps one of the reasons that few people make the day trip from Bogotá to the falls, is the ever-unpredictable weather in and around the city .

At 2600 metres of elevation and the world’s fifth-highest city, Bogotá’s weather changes quickly . It can go from blue skies and sunshine to torrential downpours and sad, overcast days at the drop of a hat.

And, with its location inside a steep canyon, El Salto del Tequendama Falls really are susceptible to thick clouds being carried up the valley. As a result, sometimes, you’ll travel all the way there just to have no view .

Trust me, I speak from experience! Luckily, I did get a few breaks in the clouds to see the waterfalls and snap a few quick pictures (see below). But, overall, it was a wet whiteout.

Although it can be hard to predict what the weather is going to be like at Tequendama Colombia. The best time to visit is on a relatively clear day . Low clouds and rain in the city are good indicators that Cascada Tequendama might not be visible today.

Technically, Bogotá’s driest months are December, January and February . However, these still all have at least 10 rainy days on average. Meaning around 1 in 3 days will see rain.

Additionally, mornings generally have better weather in Bogotá . Try to visit early in the day for the best chance of seeing the waterfall!

Where are the Salto del Tequendama Waterfalls?

The falls are around a 30 km drive southwest of Bogotá – located in the Soacha province in the Cundinamarca department.

The nearest towns are El Charquito, San Antonio del Tequendama and Pradilla. View the location on Google Maps here .

How do I get to Tequendama Falls from Bogotá?

Getting to the waterfalls from Bogotá by public transport is pretty straightforward. The quickest route is via the Transmilenio bus to San Mateo and then a local bus towards Soacha. Or from the north of the city, you can take the local bus direct from Terminal Salitre .

The journey is safe and comfortable as it’s mostly city roads rather than windy mountain roads.

The slower but simple option is to take the bus from Terminal Salitre all the way to the falls. This is the most direct option, but getting to the terminal from the areas where tourists typically stay is less easy. And it can take a long time, particularly with rush-hour traffic.

The second option is to travel from La Candelaria and surrounding areas using the Transmilenio network and then change for the bus to the waterfalls . Both are explained below…

From Terminal Salitre

If you’re staying near the airport, around the botanical gardens or in El Chapinero, then travelling via Terminal Salitre will probably be the most convenient and time-efficient.

  • Take a taxi to the terminal . I recommend using Cabify for the fastest pick-up and good pricing. Avoid flagging yellow taxis as you’ll have to pay the meter price, which can go up quickly in traffic.
  • At Terminal Salitre, head to Module 1 (colour-coded yellow) and buy your ticket to El Salto del Tequendama from the desks of either Cootranstequendama or Flota La Magdalena .
  • Once you’re on the bus, l et the driver know you want to go to El Salto so they can drop you off at the right place. Although, it’s always a good idea to follow along with GPS on your phone. Then, you can always ask for ‘aqui’ (meaning here, pronounced ah-key) when you’re in the right place.

Expect there to be slow-moving traffic between the terminal and the city limits . As a result, the journey time is likely to be between 60 and 90 minutes but could be more.

The buses run every 15 to 30 minutes before 9.30 am. After this time, you could be waiting up to 90 minutes for a bus, so make an early start.

From La Candelaria

As Bogotá’s most popular tourist district, this is where most people will travel from. This route requires you to take the Transmilenio network – think buses that look like trams – and then the bus to the waterfalls.

  • Use the Transmilenio to get to San Mateo Station . The best station to start from around La Candelaria is Las Nieves (rather than Museo del Oro), because of the way the lines run. The journey time is around 1 hour.
  • Alight at San Mateo Station and walk over the pedestrian footbridge towards the large Gran Plaza Soacha shopping centre and then down to road level.
  • Cross the first part of the highway to a small grassy central reservation . Here, you’ll need to flag down a blue Tequendama bus that has ‘Mesitas’ on the front. Don’t worry, you won’t be the only person waiting here.
  • On the bus, ask the driver for ‘El Salto’ . The fare is fixed at 8000 COP and is displayed inside along with all the other destinations. A ticket officer may board and you can pay them the fare, or pay the driver before you get off. To be doubly safe, follow the GPS on your phone to make sure you’re dropped off right by the waterfalls. The journey typically takes around 30 minutes.

Using the Transmilenio Network

To ride the Transmilenio, you’ll need a card that you preload your fare onto . The card costs 7000 COP and can be bought from any station on the network .

The good thing is that you don’t need a card per person . If you’re travelling as a couple or group, just buy one and then load enough money for each person to travel. As you pass through the barriers, pass the card back for the next person to use.

A one-way fare on the Transmilenio network is 2950 COP for any distance assuming you don’t exit through barriers along your way.

Additionally, use the Transmilenio app to work out the best route to get to you to San Mateo Station from where you are staying. However, the way the lines work, I found that the most convenient station to start from was Las Nieves, which is just a few minutes walk from the Gold Museum.

The bus stop location opposite the shelter at the Tequendama Falls

Returning to Bogotá from the Waterfalls

Getting back to Bogotá is even simpler as you can take any passing bus because they’re all going to the city.

Buses heading to the city will be coming from your right-hand side as you look at the road from the waterfall viewing platforms. Simply flag the first passing bus and get on.

The bus stop is the ‘P’ sign opposite the roadside shelters pictured above.

Although, it’s fine to flag from the other side of the road as you’ll have a better line of sight of the approaching buses.

Once you’re on the bus, you can either get off at San Mateo and change to the Transmilenio or travel all the way to Terminal Salitre for onward connections.

Facilities at the Waterfalls

  • Parking: Freely available along the roadside next to the waterfalls
  • Toilets: Only available inside the Hotel del Salto (if open)
  • Food & drink: Available for purchase from the various vendors located along the roadside. The food is typically grilled or boiled on the open-fire pits and includes items such as arepas, empanadas, meats and corn on the cob. Beers and soft drinks are also sold.

A variety of snacks available from the food stalls, pictured include arepas, empanadas, corn on the cob and sausages. Colourful soft drinks line the top shelf

Are the Waterfalls of Tequendama Worth Visiting?

At the quickest , a day out to the Tequendama Waterfalls will take 3 hours for the round trip .

If you’re visiting the museum , you can add on another 60 to 90 minutes – including time admiring the waterfall. If not, you’ll likely spend no more than 30 minutes at the waterfalls – less if it’s foggy.

So, it’s definitely a journey-heavy outing. But, the buses are simple to use so the journey isn’t stressful.

For me, even though I barely got to see the waterfalls through the cloud, I still enjoyed the day out.

By going early, I was back in Bogotá by early afternoon. So I still had plenty of time to do other things that day.

Whether it’s worth visiting based on journey time and costs (these are low), will vary from person to person. If you’re a city lover, then you’ll probably find activities more suited to you in Bogotá .

But, if you want a no-exercise-required trip out to a stunning waterfall, then I’d definitely recommend visiting El Salto del Tequendama Bogotá (on a sunny day)!

If you’re undecided, you could also consider a trip to Cascada La Chorrera , another impressive waterfall just outside of Bogotá. At an astounding 590 metres tall, this waterfall is Colombia’s tallest.

Tequendama Falls, Bogota Overview

The Tequendama Falls (Salto del Tequendama) is a 132m high waterfall off the Bogota River, located about 30 km southwest of Bogota in the municipality of San Antonio del Tequendama. Circa 10000 BC, El Abra and Tequendama were found to be the first permanent settlements in Colombia. According to Muisca legend, the waterfall was created by Bochica, who used his staff to break the rock and release the water that covered the Bogota Savannah. According to another legend, during the Spanish conquest in South America, in order to escape slavery the indigenous people of the area would jump off the Salto Del Tequendama and become eagles.
