The Pharcyde: Where Are They Now?

The Pharcyde continue to perform as a unit.

pharcyde

The Pharcyde, a pioneering force in alternative Hip Hop, are underrated geniuses. They captured the hearts of fans with their innovative rhymes during the early 1990s. Known for their groundbreaking 1992 album, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde , they churned out hits like the jazz-infused “Passin’ Me By.” As time passed, fans often wondered: where are they now? Well, The Pharcyde is still actively pushing out awesome music. As a unit, and as individuals, their artistry has only improved. While they may not be the talk of the town, their core fans continue to root for their success. Here, we will delve into the collective and individual journeys of The Pharcyde and its members.

Becoming Alternative Legends

The Pharcyde is an American Hip Hop group that was formed in 1989. The original members were Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson), and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart). Altogether, The Pharcyde gained recognition for their playful, yet innovative approach to Hip Hop. Their music is characterized by witty lyrics, unconventional flows, and jazzy, soulful beats.

Following the release of their second album Labcabincalifornia , which received mixed reviews, problems began to arise between Fatlip and the other group members. This led to him leaving the group in 1995. Despite this, the group showed support for Fatlip and his solo career. By 2000, the trio of remaining members made a comeback with the EP, Chapter One: Testing the Waters . Soon after, Slimkid3 left the group to pursue a solo career in 2000.

Waxing On

Persisting with just two members, Bootie Brown and Imani carried on as a group. The Pharcyde released the 2004 album, Humboldt Beginnings , which marked the introduction of collaborators Schmooche Cat and Spaceboy Boogie X. While they have not released new material as a collective, The Pharcyde reunited in 2008 for the annual Rock the Bells Festival Series. The group went on tour the following year and reunited again at Rhymesayers Entertainment's Soundset. In 2022, all four members reunited on the track “My Bad.” The track was released as a part of Fatlip’s album, Torpor . Two years later, Fatlip, Imani, and Slimkid3 performing as The Far Side (formerly of The Pharcyde), went on tour.

Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson)

After his time with The Pharcyde, Slimkid3 continued to contribute to the music scene. Now going by his birth name Tre Hardson, the rapper released his debut EP, The Legend Of Phoenix in 2000. Two years later, Hardson released his solo album Liberation . The album featured artists like Saul Williams, Kim Hill, and Chali 2na. As a solo artist, he stayed true to his unique flow and lyrical style that The Pharcyde fans loved.

In 2006, he released another album, SlimKid3’s Café . Collaborating with DJ Nu-Mark, they first released the EP, Another Day Another Dollar in 2011, and then the album Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-Mark in 2014. His recent ventures showcase a dedication to musical expression that goes beyond the boundaries of traditional Hip Hop. On the personal front, Hardson is satisfied leading a lowkey life, but still performs with The Pharcyde.

Imani (Emandu Wilcox)

Imani has maintained a presence within the industry with his solo endeavors, also highlighting a commitment to his artistry. The Ethiopian rapper, dancer, and activist may not have been as high-profile as some of his counterparts, but his contributions to the genre underscore his unwavering passion for Hip-Hop. He has launched two albums exclusively in Japan, Sagittarius 71 Volume 1 , and Dosier Volume 1 . Under the independent label, Chapter One, Imani is set to release a solo album soon.

Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson)

Bootie Brown has taken on various musical ventures since The Pharcyde’s heyday. His recent work exhibits his willingness to experiment with different sounds and styles. He’s since collaborated multiple times with the popular alternative band , Gorillaz. Bootie Brown provided vocals for the track "Dirty Harry," contributing to the unique and eclectic sound that Gorillaz is known for. While Bootie Brown is not a permanent member of Gorillaz, he has joined them on several tours. These include: the Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour, Humanz Tour, and Gorillaz World Tour 2022.

Fatlip (Derrick Stewart)

After he departed from The Pharcyde, Fatlip embarked on a solo career. He worked on projects with artists, including: The Chemical Brothers, L.A. Symphony, The Wascals, and Neon Neon. In 2005, he released his solo debut album The Loneliest Punk , which included his 2000 single “What Up Fatlip?” The album remained his only album until 2022, when he dropped Torpor . The lead single, “Dust In The Wind,” featured Bone Thugs -N-Harmony’s Krayzie Bone . Overall, Fatlip’s journey has been marked by candid self-expression, and artistic evolution.

Did Hip-Hop Vets the Pharcyde Reunite? Depends Which Member You Ask

By Kory Grow

Nearly three decades have passed since Fatlip exited the Pharcyde , one of the cleverest, funniest hip-hop groups to emerge in the early Nineties. Since then, he has put out a solo album, The Loneliest Punk , scored an underground hit with “What’s Up, Fatlip?” and even buried the hatchet with some of his former fellow Pharcyde emcees. Fatlip and original Pharcyde members Slimkid3 and Imani have been touring as the Far Side, though the original quartet, which includes Bootie Brown who owns the Pharcyde trademark, hasn’t gathered together since a short-lived reunion in 2008.

“It is [my voice], but they lifted the song from another project,” Brown tells Rolling Stone  from Australia where he’s on tour with Gorillaz. “I can’t remember what it was. I don’t know where they got the lyric from or who they got it from. I definitely know it’s an outside project that I did for something, but for the purpose that they’re using it for, I never recorded it for that. So I don’t know where they got it.”

On the track, Brown raps, “I find the hardest thing to do is admitting when you fucked up.” Slimkid3 offers, “Thought I was being honest, my bad.” And over a beat that echoes the Pharcyde’s breakthrough single, “Passin’ Me By,” Fatlip says, “I feel like I need some atonement.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Despite the track being on his own album, Fatlip declined repeated requests by Rolling Stone to clarify the reunion claims and respond to former members questioning the authenticity of the reconciliation. The album’s producers Sccit and Siavash the Grouch, however, spoke with Rolling Stone .

“We said, ‘Why don’t we get Bootie on here?'” Sccit says. “We tried to reach him directly, but it was very difficult, so we had to do everything through his manager. We started talking in financial terms, and we settled on a pretty high amount. And then we got the vocals. This is when we started thinking, ‘It’d be great if we can make this into a Pharcyde track.’ So we tried to communicate that [to the manager], ‘Hey, I think this will be great if we can put four people in.’ We were hoping this song would bridge the gap and get everyone back together on a love tip.”

“Fatlip loves the track, Imani loves the track, and I feel like Bootie is warming up to it,” Siavash says. “There’s still a lot of unresolved issues, so he’s just trying to figure it out.”

Similarly, when Imani first heard the track this week, he didn’t remember it. But it didn’t bother him. “I had no idea, so who knows?” he says. “That’s the magic of music.”

“We have so many projects that we have been working on and are a part of that I forgot I even did it,” Slimkid3 tells Rolling Stone . “But I just had a couple listens right now, and I’m happy with what I put down to represent for the whole.” When asked about reuniting, he says “this question is loaded,” since only three members of the group have reconciled.

Rick Ross' Drake Diss Video Is Actually Self-Promo (And It's Genius)

Why is everyone beefing with drake, santa fe klan proves mexican hip-hop has a place at coachella.

After speaking to Fatlip’s team, he said he felt like he was being threatened. “They’re like, ‘We know you don’t own the trademark in the right way, and we can go after it,'” he says. “And then we got to talking about everything else. And then they kind of hit me with, ‘You should just do it for the love of hip-hop.’ It’s all so confusing. Basically, I felt like nobody authorized this song to be used the way that it was, even to the point that they were trying to tell me that they wasn’t trying to bill the song as Pharcyde reuniting. I didn’t understand that if they can get in touch with me now, how come they couldn’t get in touch with me before they even put the song together?”

Thirty years ago, the original Pharcyde members were tight with each other and had buzz from the beginning, when their debut — 1992’s Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde — climbed to Number 75 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of singles like “Passin’ Me By” and “Otha Fish.” They’d been a group since 1989 and their callow chemistry worked for them on the one-liners of “Ya Mama” like, “Ya mama’s glasses are so thick she look into a map and see people wavin’ at her.” The album was eventually certified gold, but the good feelings didn’t last long. Fatlip parted ways with the Pharcyde shortly after the release of their second album, 1995’s, Labcabincalifornia , citing creative differences. He scored a hit a few years later with “What’s Up, Fatlip?” and its hilarious, self-deprecating Spike Jonze-directed video.

On the back of the 20th anniversary of Bizarre Ride a decade ago, Fatlip and Slimkid3 toured together with two of the album’s co-producers, J-Swift and L.A. Jay. Bootie Brown and Imani sent the other two members a cease-and-desist since some shows were billed as a “Pharcyde European Tour,” according to Courthouse News Service . A judge issued an injunction to the ex-members telling them not to use the Pharcyde name.

Both sides traded barbed insults in interviews. “They want to erase everything that ever existed,” Slimkid3 told HipHopDX in 2012. “They want people to look at them as the Pharcyde like me and Fatlip never existed. You can’t do that. We’ve made history already. You can never erase us from history.”

“[Fatlip] told me that he can’t stand to hear Imani’s voice, and can’t take being onstage with him anymore because of [it],” Brown said a decade ago, according to Okayplayer . Imani laughed at the claim in the same article, saying: “That’s the same guy [Fatlip] that Facebook’d me, talking about, I need to come down and do the [Delicious Vinyl] show with him and get these millions! That’s why he’s funny! ‘Cause he can’t stand my voice, but he’ll be the first one to call me on some, ‘We need to go do this.’ So which is it?”

Since then, Imani put aside his misgivings and made peace with the two former Pharcyde members. He had been working with the producer Computer Jay in downtown L.A. and says he tried to get Fatlip to work with him.  They started making music together, and Fatlip eventually presented him with the “My Bad” beat and asked if he’d want to record on it. “Me and Tre had been talking on the phone and Tre was like, ‘Yeah, I’m down,'” Imani says, adding that Tre sent his parts in from Portland, Oregon, where he lives. “I don’t know the situation with Bootie Brown, how that came about.” Ultimately, the three of them decided they liked working together again.

Earlier this year, the trio anointed themselves “The Far Side (Formerly of the Pharcyde)” and booked a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of Bizarre Ride . They recorded a limited-edition cassette with Spear of the Nation , which came out in February, and are looking into future projects. Imani says he’s even been back in touch with J-Swift.

Imani says that while he and Bootie Brown kept the Pharcyde going, they no longer see things the same way when it comes to the group. “I was under the impression that you forget everything after 30 years, and he just wasn’t into the idea of collaborating with Fatlip and Tre,” Imani says, adding that his communication with Bootie Brown fell apart around 2018.

Although Imani, Slimkid3 and Fatlip are working together again, they can’t use the Pharcyde name without Bootie Brown’s blessing. “I know everybody’s kind of ticked off because basically I own the trademark to the name and everything, but it wasn’t something that I stole from anybody,” Brown tells Rolling Stone . “I paid for it. I went to the former label. None of us actually owned the name; I had to actually take the former label to court to actually get it and pay for it.

“So a lot of people just had this false narrative that basically I took it from Fatlip, or I took it from Tre,” he continues. “They basically was out the group, and there was some things that was going on that I felt that needed to be stopped. And so during the process of going through legal stuff with Delicious Vinyl, the trademark was essentially on the table. So I had to pay for it, and so why not own myself? Or own what I basically put the work in for? It wasn’t a real big deal until later down the line, everybody, ‘Hey, why are you the only one that owns it?’ ‘Well, it was about 20, 30 grand that was dropped on it.’ But nobody talks about that part. It was just like, ‘How does one person own it?'”

When Brown first heard “My Bad,” he didn’t even remember the verse. Then it came back to him. “When [my manager] showed it to me, he said, ‘The song is going to be called “My Fault” and it’s going to be dealing with the times and kind of just apologizing,’ but it didn’t say I was apologizing to the former group members,” he says. “It just kind of said it’d be cool to have a song called ‘My Fault,’ so I was unaware of everything that went down.”

When he heard that it was being billed as a Pharcyde reunion, he reached out and asked them to fix the statement because he hadn’t agreed to a reunion. Then he said he felt they were making “subliminal threats.” “My last question to them was, ‘Hey did you guys even get authorization?'” he says. “And they kind of went around the question. They just kept saying, ‘Do it for the love of hip-hop. Why do you have the name if all four people built it up?’ I said, ‘Nobody cared about the name when I took control of it.’ This could have all been avoided if they reached out and said, ‘Hey Brown, we’ve got this idea.’ But they went ahead and put it on the record and billed it as the Pharcyde and at the 13th hour are trying to clear something that was a mistake. But at the end of the day they’re still telling the untrue story to you saying that I agreed with it. I’m just totally confused and baffled why they would still hold onto something that’s false.”

“I guess the only thing I could do is maybe get upset and mad, but with so much going on coming out of Covid and everything, whatever,” Brown says earlier in the week. “I really just don’t have that kind of energy to put into hostility like that. I put it more into an awareness of this is the environment, this is what’s going on and try and navigate around that.”

“We did have a long conversation with [Brown’s manager],” Sccit says. “As long as it’s not publicized as a full-fledged reunion and ‘everybody is back together and this is it, Pharcyde is back as a group,’ it’s a Pharcyde track — Pharcyde is back for one song — but they’re not back for a full-fledged reunion. So as long as we put it out like that, then we’re good.”

“I think it would be really dope for us to come together in these times after all of our experiences to put the cap on that,” Imani says. “We wanted to do three records. We did two of them so far. We know a lot more than we did before.”

Because of the way Brown feels about the track, though, a true reunion is unlikely anytime soon. “Fatlip knows the truth of how the song came about,” Brown says. “He has to because it’s on his record. If Fatlip or someone recorded on my record, I’d say, ‘Does he know this?’ That’d be my first question, because, like, I don’t talk to this guy. ‘How’d you get him to do this?’ He has to know it wasn’t legit how they got it. And he doesn’t want to incriminate himself by even getting on the phone to say something about it because he knows exactly that it wasn’t authorized.

“I’m just gonna roll with it,” Brown continues. “I think they’re going to get exactly what they’re getting out of it right now, which is a whole media stir of everyone being up in arms. ‘Why is Brown doing this?’ I’ve been in this kind of situation since Tre and Fatlip had left the group. This drama has been going on for about 20 years now. I guess I’m used to being the bad guy because I stand up for myself, and I feel like people should just tell the truth. … If we’re gonna clear the air, let’s clear the air correctly.”

Golden Age Thursday: The Pharcyde “Runnin’” Live In Europe 1996

  • By Ryan Dillon

The argument of who is underrated and overrated in the world of Hip-hop always leads to some strongly held opinions. The overrated discussion can go on forever, debating whether or not this artist should be on the cover of this magazine or if that artist should garner the amount of praise they receive. In terms of underrated, hip-hop seems to be on a united front. When discussing acts that deserve more praise, The Pharcyde are always at the top of the list. The California four-piece seemingly reinvented artsy rap and formed melodies through natural chemistry and sharp cadences.

Originally formed in 1989, The Pharcyde quickly established themselves as more than another West Coast hip-hop group. Made up of Fatlip, Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani, along with producer/DJ J-Swift, the group released their acclaimed debut, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde in 1992. The LP placed the group in the spotlight due to its fun-love melodies and comedic lyricism. Fast forward to 1995 and The Pharcyde links up with arguably the best producer hip-hop has ever seen: J Dilla. The incomparable MPC conductor added a dark, syncopated sound to The Pharcyde’s bright sonic playground. Dilla was brought in to help produce the group’s sophomore effort, 1995’s Labcabincalifornia .

The most acclaimed and well-known collaboration between Pharcyde and Dilla is their hit “Runnin’”. The murky instrumental is dotted with spurts of vocal samples and one of the cleanest drum patterns ever recorded. This juxtaposed Pharcyde’s cartoonish flows and animated melodies perfectly, creating one-of-a-kind textures that illuminate whatever room they enter. In our Golden Age video of the week, the room is a European concert hall in 1996. The Pharcyde had just released their sophomore effort to mixed reviews and conflict had arisen in the group. Fatlip had begun arguing with other members and vice versa, creating a combative recording environment that might’ve contributed to the darker tones of Labcabincalifornia .

Regardless, there is no tension in this performance. You can see the natural chemistry between the members as their harmonies penetrate time and circle the room like a flock of tropical birds. Check out The Pharcyde performing their hit “Runnin’” back in 1996 below.

This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential.

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport.

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm.

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s proposed return to boardroom ‘incredibly positive’ for PGA Tour

  • New chief executive of European Tour group welcomes move
  • McIlroy motivated by desire to end split in elite men’s golf

The newly installed chief executive of the European Tour group, Guy Kinnings, has urged the PGA Tour to seize the opportunity provided by Rory McIlroy’s willingness to return to the boardroom to help heal divisions in the game.

The Guardian revealed on Monday that McIlroy will assume roles on the PGA Tour’s policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board, subject to a vote on Wednesday. McIlroy is motivated by a strong desire to end the current split in elite men’s golf, where the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour are essentially operating independently of each other.

“I would welcome it wholeheartedly,” said Kinnings, who succeeded Keith Pelley this month, of a McIlroy return to a position of power. “It would be an incredibly positive move for the PGA Tour to take but it would be great for everyone.”

Golf’s key constituent parts now involve various tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV. McIlroy enjoys positive relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF.

“He takes an interest in so many aspects of the sport,” Kinnings added. “I have known him for a very long time and he is so thoughtful. You think you know what is going on in the game and then you listen to Rory and say: ‘Wow, he has put that so well.’

“You want to have people who are ready to apply that kind of knowledge, experience and thinking. He is very well connected with people at the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour – we rely on him hugely – and also the PIF. He is the right person with those connections [and] would be a huge asset.”

Kinnings is adamant that a “united, global” route is necessary for the sport. “I see this as an amazing opportunity,” he added. “We truly have that, with the right people and voices to help shape it. Tiger [Woods] is involved, I am delighted Rory is looking at this. These are the people who should be helping to shape the game they have given so much to.

“I think it needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly. You need the right people round the table, giving it thought because this is complicated.”

McIlroy would become the only European voice on these PGA Tour committees, which itself is notable. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have a strategic alliance but there has been general concern about European golf being left behind, with focus on the US. “I was always delighted to have European representation,” said Kinnings. “I think it is far better to have a global view and Rory truly has that.

“It is such an important time and he is passionate about reaching this solution that we all agree is in the best interests of the sport globally. So I think he would be so valuable, so constructive. Personally and on behalf of this tour, I would be delighted if he was back playing a very significant role in the important discussions that are ongoing.”

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

the pharcyde europe tour

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Where to go

Our favorite destinations: These 12 destinations are at the top of our wish list for where to go this year, without crowds. In 2023, we explored an Alaskan bear paradise, Brooklyn’s famous pizzerias and a hidden gem in Italy, among other highlights .

Travel like a local: Residents share their favorite places in our top city guides: New Orleans , Rome , Tokyo and Mexico City .

National parks: This comprehensive guide has details on all 63 U.S. national parks. For a deep dive into five of the most well-known, you can listen to the Field Trip podcast . Then explore tips from locals for visiting Yosemite , Glacier and Everglades .

Tales from the road: Dolly Parton has opened a new resort at her theme park complex in Tennessee, while “Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have a new hotel in Waco . Road-trippers may be just as excited to see the cartoon beaver at Buc-ee’s , and bargain-hunters should consider a stop at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Ala.

Nas has announced a new UK and European tour to mark the 30th anniversary of his groundbreaking debut album Illmatic .

The 50-year-old rapper will perform Illmatic , which he released at the age of 20, in full.

Register below to buy advance tickets in the presale.

The 15-date tour will begin in Finland in October before arriving in Britain on 10 November for shows in Manchester, Edinburgh, Wolverhampton and London.

The platinum-certified album includes classic Nas tracks such as “N.Y State of Mind”, “Halftime”, “The World Is Yours” and “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” and is regularly cited as one of the most important and influential records in rap history.

In 2021, The Independent ’s Sam Moore wrote : “As listeners of Illmatic and the rest of his discography know, Nas was always an old head with a baby face, more philosopher than hustler – but he is also a linguistic genius, capable of bending words, rhymes and syllables at will.”

The new tour will begin at the House of Culture in Helsinki, Finland on 22 October. It will then call at B-K in Stockholm, Sweden (24 October), Kb Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark (25 October), the Palladium in Cologne, Germany(27 October), Fabrique in Milan, Italy (30 October) and Halle 622 in Zurich, Switzerland on 31 October.

In November, Nas will play the Gasometer in Vienna, Austria (2 November), the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin, Germany (3 November), AFAS Live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (5 November), Le Zenith in Paris, France (7 November) and Stadthalle Offenbach in Offenbach, Germany on 8 November.

In the UK, Nas will appear at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester (10 November), Usher Hall, Edinburgh (11 November), University Wolverhampton at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton (14 November) and finally the Royal Albert Hall in London on 15 November.

Fans can register here to buy tickets in the presale, which begins at 10am BST on Tuesday 23 April.

General tickets go on sale at 10am BST on Thursday 25 April.

In a five-star review of Nas’ 2021 album King’s Disease 2 , The Independent ’s Annabel Nugent wrote: “While most of today’s prominent rappers were not yet born when a 20-year-old Nasir Jones was coming up in New York City, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t cite his 1994 benchmark debut Illmatic as an inspiration. A wordsmith, revered elder statesman, teacher, storyteller: the legend around Nas is all-encompassing.”

New Schengen Visa rules: Know changes in travel, insurance trends; senior citizens visiting Europe shoots up by 100%

New schengen visa rules ushered in significant changes in travel and insurance trends, with those aged 70 and above visiting schengen destinations doubling. in the upcoming season, 82% of travellers to europe will visit france, switzerland, italy, germany, netherlands, and spain..

New Schengen Visa rules brought in significant changes in travel trends, a 15 percent uptick was noted among travellers who declared pre-existing ailments.

New Schengen Visa rules have resulted in a doubling of Europe-bound senior citizens, a survey by insurance broker Policybazaar.com revealed. The new Schengen Visa rules, announced on April 18, have also spurred significant changes in travel insurance trends over the past few days, including a 3-4 per cent surge in users who booked travel insurance policies, as per the Policybazaar survey.

Travellers to Schengen destinations aged 70 and above have doubled compared with last year's figures. A significant rise in travellers declaring pre-existing diseases was also noted.

The most sought-after add-ons for travel insurance included coverage for baggage or loss of belongings, trip cancellation, adventure sports coverage, and pre-existing disease (PED) coverage, as per the report.

Manas Kapoor, business head of Travel Insurance at Policybazaar.com, pointed out a surge among Europe-bound travellers who booked long-term travel insurance, after the new visa rules came into effect.

The survey noted a 3-4 per cent surge in users who booked travel insurance policies for travels that exceeded 45 days in April 2024. “This trend is expected to rise further due to the relaxed visa norms," Manas Kapoor pointed out.

In the upcoming summer season, 82 per cent of Indian travellers to European countries will be visiting popular destinations like France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain, according to the survey.

The survey found a 15 per cent rise in travellers to Europe who declared pre-existing conditions including Diabetes and Hypertension, compared with last year's figures.

Under the new regime, Indians will be granted Schengen visas for two years, thus facilitating their entry to any of the 29 European countries multiple times. This two-year validity is further extendable by 5 years under the ‘cascade regime’. This means Indian tourists can travel and stay in any of these European countries as visa-free nationals for a longer period.
