By Matthew Ismael Ruiz

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have postponed their third concert in a week. Earlier this weekend, Springsteen announced that their March 12 show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, would be postponed “due to illness.” Their March 9 show at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, was postponed earlier this week. The band has now postponed their March 14 date at MVP Arena in Albany, New York. The group has not disclosed who was ill.

“Due to illness, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s concert at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday March 12 has been postponed,” Springsteen wrote on Twitter . “We are working on rescheduling the date so please hold on to your tickets as they will be valid for the rescheduled show.”

E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt said , “No need to be anxious or afraid. Nothing serious. Just a temporary situation. We will all be back in full force very soon.”

The Connecticut show will now take place on September 16, Springsteen announced . The Albany show is going to happen on September 19, and the Columbus concert is scheduled for September 21. Previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, he said.

Guitarists Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, saxophonist Jake Clemons, and violinist Soozie Tyrell have all missed shows on the band’s 2023 tour after contracting COVID-19 , though none of the concerts were postponed. The band has 15 dates remaining on the U.S. leg of its tour before heading to Europe in late April. Additional U.S. dates are scheduled for this summer and fall.

If you don’t think the Delta variant is real, a few performers and concert promoters might change your mind: KISS and Florida Georgia Line are the latest musical acts to announce they’re canceling or delaying shows because of the resurgent pandemic.

Stevie Nicks, Nine Inch Nails, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Garth Brooks and other artists also have recently scrapped or postponed tour dates as the coronavirus’ highly contagious Delta variant continues to sweep across the United States and abroad.

Several musicians have returned to the stage as the country gradually reopens for the first time since COVID-19 vaccines became widely accessible. But some have begun to back out of performances as the recent surge in coronavirus cases takes an increasing toll — primarily on the unvaccinated community.

Other performers — such as Phoebe Bridgers , the Foo Fighters, the Eagles, Phish, Dead & Company and Maroon 5 — are requiring concertgoers to produce proof of immunization or recent negative test results before entering their shows.

AEG Presents, the promoter of marquee music events such as the Coachella festival, recently announced a mandatory vaccination policy for staff and fans at upcoming shows. Meanwhile, some major festivals are already canceling this year’s dates, with more likely to follow suit.

As of Aug. 20, 64% of Californians had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine — but hospitals are quickly becoming overwhelmed after seeing coronavirus hospitalizations multiply over the span of a few weeks.

The new wave of live music cancellations is, of course, reminiscent of the beginning of the pandemic, when musician after musician — from BTS and Billie Eilish to Khalid and Mariah Carey — began scrapping their planned 2020 concert appearances slowly, and then all at once .

Here’s a running list of artists who have altered their 2021 touring schedules so far.

Rock band KISS delayed its next four appearances in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin after bassist and singer Gene Simmons tested positive for COVID-19.

“While [guitarist and singer] Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he has recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms,” the group said in an Aug. 31 statement.

“The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days. ... All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates once announced. More information will be emailed to ticket holders directly.”

KISS’ End of the Road tour is expected to resume Sept. 9 at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine.

Florida Georgia Line

On Aug. 20, country music duo Florida Georgia Line canceled the remainder of their I Love My Country tour, citing safety concerns.

In California, the “Cruise” hitmakers were expected to travel to San Diego, Mountain View, Wheatland, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Bernardino in November.

Other stops on the itinerary spanned Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Connecticut, New York, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington state and Washington, D.C.

“While we’ve been able to see some of y’all at shows recently, everyone’s continued safety has been weighing heavy on us,” the group said in a statement.

“We’re so bummed to have to cancel this tour, but we know in our hearts that we still have to make sure we’re keeping our fans and crew safe. We love y’all and can’t wait to be back out when the time is right.”

BTS posing in a line on the Grammys red carpet

Global pop supergroup BTS officially pulled the plug Aug. 20 on its highly anticipated Map of the Soul tour, long after postponing the North American leg of the tour in March 2020.

“Our company has worked hard to resume preparations for the BTS Map of the Soul tour, knowing that all fans have been waiting eagerly and long for the tour,” the band’s record label, Bighit, said in a statement.

“However, due to changing circumstances beyond our control, it has become difficult to resume performances at the same scale and timeline as previously planned. ... [Allow] us to offer our sincere apology to all fans who have waited for the BTS Map of the Soul tour to resume. We are working to prepare a viable schedule and performance format that can meet your expectations, and we will provide updated notices as soon as possible.”

Nine Inch Nails

On Aug. 19, rock band Nine Inch Nails canceled the remainder of its 2021 concert appearances “with great regret.”

“When originally planned, these shows were intended to be a cathartic and celebratory return to live music,” the group said in a statement.

“However, with each passing day it’s becoming more apparent we’re not at that place yet. We are sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment and look forward to seeing you again when the time is right.”

Garth Brooks

Country superstar Brooks announced Aug. 18 that his stadium tour would be going on hiatus while his team continues to “monitor the virus’ impact and watch how schools, sports, and other entertainment entities are handling this stage of the pandemic.”

As a precaution, the singer has canceled five upcoming performances across Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts and Tennessee.

“In July, I sincerely thought the pandemic was falling behind us. Now, watching this new wave, I realize we are still in the fight and I must do my part,” Brooks said in a statement . “It is with a heavy heart we announce the decision to cancel all 5 shows but with a hopeful heart, we will reschedule and start over when this wave seems to be behind us.”

“The joy I have seen in everyone’s faces as live music returns has been more than worth our constant diligence to maintain safety protocols not only for the fans, but for our band, the crew and the hard working staff in these stadiums,” he added. “Their dedication to safety for the people who fill those seats has been a miracle to watch and a blessing to receive. I am truly grateful.”

California metal band Korn canceled and rescheduled a slew of concert dates Aug. 16 after frontman Jonathan Davis tested positive for COVID-19.

“On Saturday, we received the unfortunate news that Jonathan tested positive for Covid, and needless to say, we had to postpone the show last minute,” the group said in a statement .

“As always, our primary goal is to ensure the safety of everyone involved, so this is something that has to be done. Jonathan’s spirits are high, and he’s resting and recovering now. We’re as disappointed as you are about the circumstances, but we’ll get through it though, and we can’t wait to see you once we’re back, firing on all cylinders once again.”

Some of Korn’s August shows in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire were postponed to late September and early October, while performances in New York have been canceled.

Tony Bennett

After performing back-to-back, sold-out shows with frequent collaborator Lady Gaga in early August at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, famed crooner Bennett will no longer go on tour this fall as planned.

“There won’t be any additional concerts,” Bennett’s son told Variety Aug. 12. ”This was a hard decision for us to make, as he is a capable performer. This is, however, doctors’ orders. ... He’ll be doing other things, but not those upcoming shows.”

Earlier this year, Bennett’s family revealed that the veteran musician had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease . In addition to his health complications, Bennett’s advanced age — he just turned 95 — places him firmly in the high-risk category for COVID-19.

“It’s not the singing aspect but, rather, the traveling,” his son told Variety. “Look, he gets tired. ... [D]oing concerts now is just too much for him. We don’t want him to fall onstage, for instance — something as simple as that.”

Titled “One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga,” the singer’s recent appearance in the Big Apple already had hinted at Bennett’s retirement from live performing. Still on the horizon, however, is his second and final joint album with Gaga, “Love for Sale” — out Oct. 1.

Stevie Nicks

On Aug. 10, legendary Fleetwood Mac rocker Nicks , 73, announced her reluctant decision to abort a string of upcoming tour dates in Colorado, California, Texas and Louisiana.

“These are challenging times with challenging decisions that have to be made,” the “Edge of Seventeen” hitmaker explained via Twitter. “I want everyone to be safe and healthy and the rising Covid cases should be of concern to all of us.

“While I’m vaccinated, at my age, I am still being extremely cautious and for that reason have decided to skip the 5 performances I had planned for 2021. Because singing and performing have been my whole life, my primary goal is to keep healthy so I can continue singing for the next decade or longer. I’m devastated and I know the fans are disappointed, but we will look towards a brighter 2022.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd pulled out of its forthcoming shows in Ohio, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama on Aug. 9 after longtime guitarist Rickey Medlocke tested positive for COVID-19.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Aug. 13 appearance in Atlanta was moved to Oct. 23.

“Rickey is home resting and responding well to treatment,” the group said in a statement . “We will continue to update you on his condition.”

Michael Bublé

Canadian singer-songwriter Bublé also amended his touring schedule on Aug. 6 “due to concerns over the rising number of Coronavirus infections.”

The “Just Haven’t Met You Yet” artist’s August concert appearances in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida have all been rescheduled to October, while new dates for the South American leg of the tour “will be announced shortly,” according to Bublé’s Twitter account .

Limp Bizkit

On Aug. 7, rap-rock band Limp Bizkit, which performed at Lollapalooza in Chicago late last month, indefinitely postponed the remainder of its August tour dates “out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the band, crew and most of all the fans,” according to a statement.

“In short, the system is still very flawed,” frontman Fred Durst told Billboard . “Even if the performers, crews, staff, and promoters do their best to ensure safety on and behind the stage, that doesn’t ensure the safety of the audience as a whole.”

Tickets purchased online for shows in New York, New Hampshire, Virginia, Nebraska and Texas will be automatically refunded.

On Aug. 11, Grateful Dead cover band Joe Russo’s Almost Dead postponed its upcoming indoor shows in Wisconsin and Missouri to late March, while canceling multiple appearances in Michigan and New Orleans.

“After much consideration and discussion, we believe it’s in the best interest of our fans, band and crew to err on the side of safety and caution at this time,” the group said in a statement.

“As of now, we will continue playing [select] shows with ... additional safety precautions. ... As the year progresses, we will make decisions based on the best data available with the health and safety of ourselves and our fans in mind. We apologize for the bad news and deeply appreciate your understanding.”

The String Cheese Incident

pic.twitter.com/pFmSvfko8V — The String Cheese Incident (@SCI_Official) August 12, 2021

On Aug. 12, Colorado jam band the String Cheese Incident canceled its weekend performances in Kentucky and Ohio after one of its members tested positive for COVID-19 — “despite all being vaccinated.”

“We are super bummed we can’t play music for y’all, but this is how the world seems to run these days,” the group said in a statement. “Thanks for the continued support, and we look forward to crossing paths soon.”

The band also canceled appearances in late August at the Big Top and the Backwoods Festival at Mulberry Mountain, but its website says it will play shows in October and later in the year.

Alternative Rock Band the Neighbourhood Is Going on Hiatus (EXCLUSIVE)

The group is best known for the 2013 hit "Sweater Weather," which has seen a resurgence thanks to TikTok.

Alternative rock band The Neighbourhood are taking a hiatus, multiple sources confirm to Variety .

The group, best known for the 2013 hit “Sweater Weather,” released its fourth album, “Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones,” in September 2020. They played two shows in October 2021 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y., and released a new line of merch in November. The group has not been active on its Instagram account since then.

The Neighbourhood’s hiatus comes as lead singer Jesse Rutherford posted several snippets of what seems to be new solo music on his TikTok account beginning Feb. 14. The band had previously announced a tour in Europe beginning in September, but a source close to the situation tells  Variety  those dates will ultimately be canceled.

Consisting of Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott and drummer Brandon Alexander Fried, the Neighbourhood formed in 2011 and saw fairly quick success with the release of “Sweater Weather” and first EP “I’m Sorry.” In 2013, they signed to Columbia Records and performed at Coachella ahead of the release of their debut album, “I Love You.” It debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 200, with “Sweater Weather” reaching No. 1 on the alternative songs chart.

In October 2015, the band released its second album, “Wiped Out!,” which reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group’s third, self-titled album “The Neighbourhood” came out in March 2018, and was followed by “Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones” in 2020.

Popular on Variety

The band has recently achieved viral success on TikTok, with songs “Sweater Weather” and “Daddy Issues” becoming the soundtrack to several trends on the video sharing app. This has translated to a chart resurgence as well, with “Sweater Weather” reaching an all-time peak of No. 30 on Spotify’s global chart this year, nearly 10 years after its release, according to Chart Data .

‘Exhausted and dangerously low’ … (L-R) Sam Fender, Arlo Parks and Justin Bieber.

‘This should not be normalised’: Why musicians are cancelling tours to protect their mental health

High-profile acts from Justin Bieber to Arlo Parks have cancelled gigs recently, prioritising mental health over the demands of a relentless industry

I n early August, Yard Act were at Stansted airport, waiting for a flight to Sicily, when singer James Smith hit a wall. “It felt as if I was in a cattle shed,” he says. “I was banging my head against the table saying: ‘I can’t do this any more.’”

Since the Leeds post-punk band released their debut album, The Overload , in January, their touring schedule had been relentless. Critical acclaim and a Mercury nomination had only amplified the pressure – bigger bookings kept coming, and the band was determined to play them all. “That weekend we were playing a castle with The Flaming Lips,” Smith says. “It was a dream come true. You feel ungrateful saying you can’t do it.”

His band and crew admitted they all felt the same. After consultation with their management and label, they made the difficult decision to cancel a run of shows in Europe. “Rest time at home is what our bodies and brains need right now,” the band said in a statement.

Yard Act are not alone in their sudden buckling, and their openness about why. A number of high-profile acts have recently cancelled tour dates, stating the need to attend to their mental health, from Wet Leg to Disclosure , Justin Bieber , Shawn Mendes , Gang of Youths and Russ.

This week, Arlo Parks became the latest, cancelling a run of US shows and explaining how the relentless grind of the past 18 months had left her “exhausted and dangerously low”. Her decision followed Sam Fender’s announcement that he was cancelling his US tour support slots with Florence + the Machine due to burnout: “It seems completely hypocritical of me to advocate for discussion on mental health and write songs about it if I don’t take time off to look after my own mental health.”

Yard Act.

There are two factors at play here: a growing willingness among musicians to talk about mental health struggles and the demands of their profession, and an industry desperate to spring back to life after a devastating pandemic, with turbo-charged touring and promotional schedules to make up for perceived lost time.

Couple this with pitiful income from streaming, and the mounting cost of living, and the pressure to work more and chase success increases further. “Those opportunities are rare,” says Smith, of the endless touring momentum. “No one owes you those slots, and you can say no to them, but if you lose traction, and then those opportunities don’t come along again, that’s on you.”

Music Minds Matter (MMM), the music industry mental health service run in conjunction with Help Musicians, has noted a marked increase in uptake. “After a protracted period of relative inactivity there have been heightened numbers of people coming to us about stress, anxiety and performance-related anxiety,” says Joe Hastings of Help Musicians. MMM is able to direct those in need to a range of services, including a 24/7 hotline, therapy, online resources and peer-support sessions.

While the growing pressure on artists is concerning, Hastings says there is some solace in the fact that people are reaching out for help (some record labels also offer free therapy to their artists) and discussing their issues. “The way that artists are articulating their experiences wasn’t this common even five years ago,” he says.

Social media has helped here. Over the summer, Arooj Aftab spoke on Twitter about the gathering strains of touring: the flight-price increases, fuel, visas, taxes and hotels, promoters’ fear of raising ticket prices, audience reticence to attend shows post-Covid and in a cost-of-living crisis. She had returned from her recent tour with headline slots and sold-out shows to find herself still tens of thousands in debt. “And I’m being told that it’s normal,” she wrote. “Why is this normal. This should not be normalised.”

Singer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins posted about the promoter who threatened to cut her fee a week before her show because she only planned to play with two musicians, not the larger ensemble she sometimes plays with. The promoter said that only the bigger band warranted the full price. She was forced to find local musicians who could improvise in order to fill out the lineup and receive the promised rate. “It made me question my relationship with self-worth,” she says. “Though I’m reminded all the time that they’re losing money, too – the promoters, the festivals, the venues.”

Cassandra Jenkins.

It came on the back of a brutal tour in which Jenkins needed to advocate for herself daily just to maintain some sense of wellbeing. At one point, realising she hadn’t taken a day off for two months, and with two more months of touring ahead, she cancelled two shows. “Every day, I was asking: Am I burning out? Is this how burnout feels? When you’re asking that question, you’re already past that point.”

Jenkins likens musicians speaking out on this subject to the recent number of athletes talking about their own vulnerabilities. “It’s really good to talk about this,” she says. “But it’s also really hard to talk about, because it’s really hard for people to think about their favourite artists struggling to do what they do.”

Music journalist Ian Winwood is the author of Bodies , a book that offers a fascinating, damning insight into the unhealthy demands and excesses of the music industry. While it “seems willing to have a conversation about mental health”, he says, “the litmus test is whether it’s willing to challenge the notion of ‘the show must go on’.”

Winwood recalls interviewing a dope-sick Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, clearly in no fit state to face the media, and hearing Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro recounting the time he “collapsed in Toronto airport, placed on a gurney, wires sticking out of him” but still went on to play two Coachella shows “because he had trained himself to believe that the band’s career rested on two concerts”.

Of course many musicians are far from ever playing Coachella, and it is hard to believe that for them, cancelling shows for the benefit of their mental health would be received as warmly as it is for Parks and Fender – or that they would have the safety nets and support networks to do so.

But these high-profile acts’ open discussion of industry challenges could prompt a trickle-down effect. MMM’s Hastings notes that it is “important to enable artists to make difficult decisions on the basis of having a good understanding of what they need to take care of themselves and lead happy and healthy careers”. Bigger artists speaking about the mental health demands of touring may also educate promoters, venues, labels, managers and audiences, prompting greater empathy for anyone struggling at any level.

At any stage in your career, that understanding should not be so hard, Jenkins says. When she cancelled her dates in Spain, she felt heartbroken by the Spanish fans who posted crying emojis beneath her announcement on Instagram. She wrote back to every single one. “And I received so much love back,” she says. “At the end of the day, people just want to show you they care. They see that you’re vulnerable.”

She hopes that similar understanding of musicians’ vulnerability might extend to those involved in the infrastructure of touring. She talks of the huge effect of one Swiss host simply cooking her a warm meal and talking as they ate together. And of End of the Road festival being “the best festival I’ve ever played – because it’s just so well-organised, it allowed everyone to have a lightness about them”. These were “beautiful, intimate experiences, and examples of how care in real time resulted in a better performance”.

Wet Leg.

In every cancellation statement, and every interview for this piece, musicians have been quick to mention their gratitude for having a music career, for touring the world, playing shows, meeting their audiences. “I can’t express how grateful we are to have such an awesome fanbase,” Fender wrote. “Thank you for always sticking by us.” Parks spoke of how grateful she is “to be where I am today” and promised: “I will do everything I can to make this up to you.”

There is a fear among musicians, Winwood says, that if they ever complain, audiences with “proper jobs” outside the music industry will think they are ungrateful. But, he says, it’s worth remembering one thing: “If an artist has risen to a point where people know their name, they are already tough, they’re already resilient. So if they are telling you they are broken, believe them.”

W.A.S.P. Cancels 2023 U.S. Tour Due To BLACKIE LAWLESS's 'Extensive Back Injuries'

Because of the extensive back injuries suffered by Blackie Lawless during the European leg of W.A.S.P. 's 40th-anniversary tour, the band's previously announced 2023 U.S. tour has been canceled and will be rescheduled for spring 2024. Tickets and VIP packages can be refunded at the point of purchase.

Lawless comments: "The extent of the trauma I endured on the 2023 European tour was far greater than originally diagnosed and surgery will now be needed to correct the problem. In addition to the original herniated disc, as that tour continued, a second disc became herniated. Upon returning home, a second MRI also revealed a broken vertebrae to my lower back.

"I've been fortunate to work with the best specialists in the U.S. and I've been in intensive rehab since we got home. It's going well but the damage was pretty extensive and all the doctors agree moving the tour a few months back will be the safest thing. It's all been as the result of an injury that happened several years ago. I'm working my butt off to get ready and I'll be up riding on [my mic stand nicknamed] Elvis ... bigger and badder than ever. If the Torture Never Stops, then the 40th Never Stops!"

During a May 25 appearance on SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" , Lawless spoke about completing W.A.S.P. 's recent European tour while seated after suffering a herniated disc in his back. He said: "This past Monday was my 10-year anniversary from when I broke my right femur. And it's a long, complicated story, but what's been going on with my back is a direct reflection of what happened with that femur being broken. Because I wore a lift for nine years, and come to find out I did not need that lift. And that was only determined last summer, so the lift was taken out. But the spine had adjusted to me walking with that lift. And when we took it out, then that's when the problems started. And it actually started at the beginning of the U.S. tour. And I was able to get through the U.S. tour okay, and we thought it had settled into place, but when we got to Europe, we quickly discovered, about two weeks into the tour, that was not the case. And what was happening is that the vertebrae were compressing some of the disks. I ended up rupturing a disk, and then that starts leaking out a gelatin that then wraps itself around the nerves coming out of the spinal cord. And that then creates this thing called nerve pain. And I don't know if people understand what that is, because I had heard of it but I had never experienced it before. And it is pain that you cannot imagine. It is unlike anything you've ever experienced before."

The 66-year-old guitarist/vocalist, whose real name is Steven Duren , continued: "I had to go to Berlin four times to get treatment. I received eight epidurals throughout the tour. That was the only way I was getting through it, because the pain is literally off the charts. And the doctors there told me, they said, 'This thing can become so intense, people commit suicide from it.' And I can see why people would do that.

"The first time I had to go in, you have to go into a surgical center because it's not something that can be done in a regular doctor's office. So we were in a hospital in Berlin. So they take me into the surgical room, or the operating room. And he told me, he said, 'Now I'm gonna inject this needle or insert this needle into you and I'm gonna touch your spinal cord with it.' He said, 'I want you to get ready for this.' Now, I didn't know what that meant — until he did it. And when he did it — I really don't have accurate words to describe what that feels like. The closest way I can explain it is it felt like an explosion, like a bomb went off inside my legs. And he said, 'I'm gonna have to do this one more time.' And I swear to you, I grabbed the table with both hands.

"You see these movies about mafia and things like that, where they're pulling guys' fingernails off with pliers. You don't need that," Lawless added. "You just show somebody a needle — they'll give up their kids. I'm here to tell you — there's nothing like it. I mean, you cannot fathom it unless you've been through it.

"So, anyway, they were able to keep me running, but they were afraid that I was gonna do further damage. So the deal was halfway during the tour that I would pull back about 50 percent of the movement that I was doing. But it started getting worse and worse. And we got to Zurich about two and a half weeks ago, and something happened during the show, and I knew something wasn't right. And that's when we went to sitting after that.

"We got home this past Saturday, and I went straight to the doctor's office. And they looked at me, and we said, 'Okay, let's do new pictures.' So we did new pictures this past Monday.

"I have a thing, and they determined this in Berlin — it's called mechanical compression," Blackie revealed. "And what that means is you get vertebrae that start pushing against each other, but they grind against each other at the same time because they start to cramp. Well, when we were doing the show in Zurich, it was cramping really bad and I couldn't get it to stop. And I was literally , literally hanging on to [my mic stand] Elvis while I was trying to sing and play at the same time.

"So we did the new pictures on Monday, and I have a cracked vertebra now in my spine. But as bad as that sounds, it's not the first time it happened," Lawless said. "It happened the first time in '92 on 'The Crimson Idol' tour. I got a little too close to the edge of the stage one night and some of the fans pulled me off the stage into the audience, and I ended up upside down in the crowd and they fell on top of me, and I broke a vertebra then. So this is the second time I've been through this. So it'll heal on its own. I start therapy tomorrow — it's a swimming pool thing that I'm gonna have to do to start first. But they say they're gonna have me up to speed in eight weeks to start the tour. So I'll be ready to go."

Fan-filmed video of one of the first shows of Lawless performing while seated, from the May 15 concert at Sono Music Club in Brno, Czech Republic, can be seen below. Lawless 's chair was built into his custom mic stand.

Ween has abruptly canceled all seven April concerts on the band’s upcoming 40th anniversary tour . In a note addressed to fans, guitarist/co-founder Mickey “ Dean Ween” Melchiondo  wrote that he is stepping away “from performing live in order to preserve my mental and spiritual well being.”

See the full note from Deaner below,

For the majority of my life I have been blessed enough to have a career doing the thing that I love the most. This privilege has never been lost on me. The fact that the music reaches other people and means so much to them is something that I never take for granted, and for which I am truly grateful, all of the time, every time we perform. At this moment in time though I need to step away from performing live in order to preserve my mental and spiritual well being, and instead focus on myself and loved ones. I know this will come as a disappointment and with great inconvenience to many people who bought tickets and made travel plans, and for this I sincerely apologize. I look forward to returning to the stage with the enthusiasm, joy, and renewed sense of inspiration that our fans deserve, and that I require of myself when we play live. Thank you and god bless.

The affected shows include stops in Atlanta (4/19), Nashville (4/20), Birmingham, AL (4/21), Charleston, SC (4/23), Asheville, NC (4/25), Raleigh (4/26), and Richmond, VA (4/27). Then in September, Ween is due to celebrate 30 years of Chocolate and Cheese with the band’s debut at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on September 27th. For tickets and a full list of tour dates visit the band’s website . Ween had previously kicked off its 40th anniversary year with a four-night, two-city run in Phoenix and Del Mar, CA .

Get well soon, Deaner. ♥

KISS cancels Knoxville show following band member's illness

tour cancelled band

Knoxville won't become a "Rock City" after all. Classic rock band KISS canceled its performance at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, the venue announced on social media Nov. 24, the same date as the scheduled show.

The news comes after KISS canceled its Nov. 21 show in Ottawa, Canada, and its Nov. 22 show in Toronto after band member Paul Stanley got the flu, according to The U.S. Sun . Thompson-Boling Arena posted on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the Knoxville show was no longer happening either.

The page on Thompson-Boling's website for the concert states that refunds will be available for ticket-holders wherever their tickets were purchased.

Podcaster and music journalist Mitch Lafon announced on X first on Nov. 23 that the Knoxville show was canceled.

"I’m told that KISS’ Knoxville show is canceled. Official announcement should be forthcoming. Staff were apparently notified to not report for work," Lafon posted. A follow-up post included a screenshot of an email sent to AXIS Security employees informing them that the show was postponed due to illness.

The stop in Knoxville, part of the band's "End of the Road Tour," was announced in March.

The band started in 1973 in New York City. KISS was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Original members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer are current band members.

KISS has performed in Knoxville before, including during a previous "farewell tour" stop in 2000, also at Thompson-Boling.

This is the third cancellation or postponement of a major band's Thompson-Boling Arena show due to illness this year. The Chicks postponed a July 29 concert to to Sept. 21. More recently, Aerosmith postponed a Knoxville concert that had been set for Jan. 13, 2024, for the band's "Peace Out" tour because of Steven Tyler's larynx injury. A new date for the Aerosmith show has not been announced yet, but previously purchased tickets will be honored.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Architects Cancel Rescheduled 2022 North American Tour

Architects had been planning to return to the concert stage in the U.S. next month, but according to a new statement from the band, that's not going to happen. The band cited "logistical issues" as the reasoning for the cancellation.

The group was set to perform with We Came as Romans and Like Moths to Flames on the run, that was set to launch on Sept. 6 in Minneapolis. This actually was a rescheduled run that had been pushed back due to the pandemic when Polyphia and Loathe were set to support the band in the fall of 2021. The shows were in support of the band's standout 2021 release, For Those That Wish to Exist .

In their statement, the band writes, "It pains us to announce that despite the best efforts of everyone in our band, our crew and the rest of the team, a number of logistical issues have forced us to cancel our upcoming North American tour. We had been looking forward to playing so many new songs for you, but everything from transportation to visa approval timelines and other hurdles have made the trip impossible at this stage."

They continue, "We recognize the last few years have been a challenging time for everyone and we were really excited to perform for you and share moments together that only live music can facilitate. We will announce new plans to return as soon as we can. The last thing we want to do is announce new dates that we will be unable to uphold. Thank you for your understanding. We will be back. In the meantime, refunds for tickets & VIP will be made automatically to the method of payment used to purchase."

Meanwhile, We Came as Romans also addressed their fans, but it appears as though they have something else in the works following the cancellation news. "We're extremely saddened to share the cancellation of the For Those That Wish to Exist U.S. Tour," wrote the band. "Architects are facing logistical issues that prevent this tour from happening. However, we've got some exciting news to share with you soon. We can't wait."

Though the tour was tied to the For Those That Wish to Exist album, fans of Architects know the group has been working on new music. Just last month they issued a new song called " Tear Gas " with the reveal that a new album titled The Classic Symptoms of a Broken Spirit would be coming on Oct. 21 via Epitaph Records.

Stay tuned to see what adjustments all three bands make to their 2022 scheduling with the tour now off.

Every 2021 Concert & Festival Canceled Due to COVID-19

These are all the 2021 concerts and festivals that have been canceled or rescheduled because of COVID-19 and the surging delta and omicron variants.

By Billboard Staff

Billboard Staff

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

While there are a lot of promising signs in the current touring landscape — from the successful rollouts of the Rolling Loud and Lollapalooza festivals to major events like Bonnaroo and ACL Fest remaining on the fall schedule — there are plenty of examples of the surging COVID-19 pandemic’s toll on an already-struggling industry.

Because there are near-daily announcements of cancellations and postponements, we’re keeping track of the latest in this updating list. Below, find all the 2021 concerts and festivals that have been canceled or rescheduled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ( These are listed in descending order of announcement, so find the latest cancellations at the very top . )

The Strokes

Trending on Billboard

The Strokes were set to ring in 2022 with openers IDLES and Hinds for New Year’s Eve performance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn before cancelling the event on Christmas Eve. In a statement the band said, “We were so excited to be performing for everyone in Brooklyn this New Year’s Eve, but the Omicron variant has thwarted our plans. We’ve made the decision to postpone our show at Barclays Center.”

The Flaming Lips

The psychedelic rockers had been scheduled to perform two New Year’s Eve shows in Tennessee, but announced alongside the venue on Dec. 27 that the concerts would be postponed until February due to the surge of COVID-19 cases. “The Flaming Lips and The Caverns are heartbroken to deliver this news, and we know you’re no doubt sad to read it, but the health and safety of guests, staff, crew and everyone on stage is of utmost importance,” they said in a joint statement.

LCD Soundsystem

The group canceled the final three shows of their Brooklyn Steel residency due to spiking COVID-19 cases and requests from fans to nix the concerts. Just days earlier, LCD Soundsystem had said they would not nix the shows .

iHeartRadio Y100 Jingle Ball

Jingle Ball’s Florida stop, which was scheduled for Dec. 19, was canceled the morning of the show . “Due to the increased transmission of the new Covid-19 variant and to further minimize any potential risks, as a precautionary measure and for the safety of our staff, talent and guests, we have made the decision to cancel tonight’s iHeartRadio Y100 Jingle Ball,” iHeartRadio tweeted.

Charli XCX and ‘Saturday Night Live’

Hours ahead of her scheduled performance on SNL , the pop star announced that her set was no longer happening. “due to the limited crew at tonight’s taping of snl my musical performances will no longer be able to go ahead,” she tweeted. “i am devastated and heartbroken. … it can’t happen this time but I’ll be back! i am currently safe and healthy but of course very sad.” The news came shortly after the NBC late-night comedy show announced that it was going to tape without a live audience due to surging COVID-19 numbers. The show also sent the majority of cast members home, and aired pre-recorded sketches as well as holiday favorites from years past as Paul Rudd hosted for the fifth time.

Megan Thee Stallion and Jonas Brothers

The rapper and the sibling trio both nixed their performances at Atlanta’s Jingle Ball on Dec. 16 after members of their teams tested positive. “While I tested negative today, I’m not feeling well, and as a safety precaution, I won’t be able to perform at Jingle Ball in Atlanta,” the rapper  tweeted . The Jonas Brothers said a member of their production crew had fallen ill, and that the siblings were “extremely disappointed” to not perform for fans.

Brett Eldredge

The country singer announced on Dec. 16 that he had contracted a breakthrough case of COVID-19 , and had to reschedule his Dec. 17 and 18 shows. “Today has been a really rough day. I was about to go to the airport to fly to Chicago … and I’ve been feeling like I’ve had a cold or something the last few days,” he shared in an Instagram video. “When I went to go check one last time to see if it wasn’t COVID or something, and unfortunately, it turns out I have COVID.”

Evanescence

Kiss cancel string of shows on farewell tour as Paul Stanley struggles with flu

Kiss cancel Ottawa, Toronto and Knoxville gigs with farewell tour set to wrap up in New York on December 2

A picture of Paul Stanley performing live with Kiss in 2023

Kiss have cancelled three shows in a row on their farewell tour as frontman Paul Stanley struggles to fight off the flu.

Show in Ottawa and Toronto in Canada, and a performance in Knoxville, Tennessee, have been pulled this week. They band were scheduled to perform at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on November 21, the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on November 22, and Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville tonight (November 24).

But all three were cancelled as Stanley recovers. As the band's End of the Road World Tour is due to come to an end with two nights at Madison Square Garden on December 1 and 2, any chance of the lost dates being rescheduled seems unlikely.

Announcing the cancellation of the two Canada dates, Stanley said: "Toronto and Ottawa… I've done everything possible to get onstage and be a part of the incredible 2 1/2-hour celebration planned but this flu has made it impossible.

"I along with Gene, Tommy and Eric couldn't be more disappointed and send our deepest apologies."

The announcement about the cancellation of the Knoxville show was accompanied by the following statement: "Due to an unforeseen illness in the band party, we are unable to perform tonight. Refunds will be available at your point of purchase."

Five scheduled dates remain on the End of the Road World Tour – tomorrow (November 25) in Gainbridge, Indianapolis, November 27 in Rosemont, Illinois, November 29 in Baltimore, Maryland, and the two Madison Square Garden shows on December 1 and 2.

Why was the Morgan Wallen concert canceled in Mississippi? What you need to know

tour cancelled band

The venue was set and concert-goers were waiting for Morgan Wallen to take the stage in Mississippi Sunday night. He never made it.

"Ladies & Gentlemen, Unfortunately, Morgan has lost his voice and is unable to perform tonight – therefore tonight's show has been canceled. Please make your way safely to the stadium exits. Refunds for tonight's event will be available at point of purchase," stated a post on a massive stage screen.

To say that people were upset by the turn of events would be an understatement.

People took to social media to post about the abrupt cancellation as they were waiting for the country music star — whose popularity has skyrocketed in the past year — to take to the stage at the University of Mississippi Rebels' Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.

As the news spread so did rumors attached to the sudden cancelation.

Here's what we know so far about the April 23 concert and more about the singer.

Morgan Wallen cancels Mississippi concert, rumors swirl

The billboard chart-dominating country superstar stated that he needs vocal rest.

"After last night's show I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor and working through my vocal exercises trying to get better. I really thought I'd be able to take the stage and it kills me to deliver this so close to showtime, but my voice is shot and I am unable to sing," stated the 2022 Academy of Country Music Album of the Year winner via social media just before his scheduled performance in Oxford, Mississippi.

After this rumors swirled on social media, wondering if there was some other reason for the cancellation.

Wallen's social media accounts and his website have not been updated with any more information about the cancellation or how the singer is doing as of 11 a.m. April 25.

Lawsuit against Morgan Wallen

After Wallen bailed on a concert with more than 60,000 of his fans, one has filed a lawsuit against him for it.

Brandi Burcham, who had tickets to see Wallen at Vaught Hemingway Stadium Sunday, has filed suit against the country music star in class action complaint.

The suit states, "Even if ticket prices are refunded, no offer has been made to reimburse concert goers for other out-of-pocket expenses they incurred in connection with the concert cancellation, including transportation, lodging, food, merchandise sales, transaction fees, and other such expenses."

How do I get a refund for the Morgan Wallen Mississippi concert?

After the announcement that Wallen wouldn't be performing, concert-goers were directed to the point of purchase desk for a refund and now the Ole Miss athletic department has reached out via email to all who have purchased tickets for the canceled concert.

"Thank you for your patience as we process all refunds for the Sunday, April 23 Morgan Wallen concert," the emails stated. "All orders placed through the Ole Miss Athletics Ticket Office will be refunded at 100% to the original payment method.  Refunds include all tickets, parking, fees, order charges, and VIP packages for Sunday's show."

What about other Morgan Wallen concert dates?

Wallen was only just starting his world tour when his voice gave out.

Wallen's current tour cycle would take him off the road for his dates on April 27 at Grand Rapids, Michigan's Van Andel Arena, April 28 at Moline, Illinois's Vibrant Arena, and April 29 at Lincoln, Nebraska's Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Vibrant Arena already announced the rescheduling of Wallen's scheduled concert to Sept. 8 on Facebook.

The date following that trio of shows is in Jacksonville, Florida, at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on May 4. The Florida venue has not posted anything about the concert on the arena's office social media pages.

Morgan's vocal rest amid a global tour has been compared to what happened to Adele, while she was seeing phenomenal success of her album "21", almost a decade ago.

During a 2011 ABC interview, Dr. Gaelyn Garrett, Senior Executive Medical Director of Nashville's Vanderbilt Voice Center, stated, "I'll put someone on complete voice rest (meaning no singing or talking) for a week. Then I'll check them again in a week to make sure there's no recurrent bleed."

Kid Cudi, one of Joe Burrow's 'idols,' cancels Insano World Tour after breaking foot

We can now say that Joe Burrow and his favorite rapper have one thing in common.

They're both on the injured reserve.

Kid Cudi, an Ohio native and known to be one of the Bengals quarterback's "idols growing up," announced in an X post Wednesday that he is canceling his Insano Engage the Rage World Tour after breaking his foot at Coachella on Sunday.

Cudi said in the post that he has a "broken calcaneus" and that he'd soon be undergoing surgery. He added that "there's gonna be a long recovery time."

"We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all," Cudi said. "There's just no way I can bounce back in time to give 100%. The injury is much more severe than I thought."

The nine-month tour featured over 40 concerts across North America and Europe. It was scheduled to kick off in Austin, Texas, June 28 and he was supposed to stop in Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for a show at the Heritage Bank Center, as well as in his hometown of Cleveland on July 31.

Cudi added in the post that anyone who bought tickets will get a full refund and new tour dates will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

The 40-year-old rapper, who was a special treat just for second-weekend fans at the coveted music festival in Indio, California, played to an overflowing Sahara tent crowd. However, late in his 40-minute set, he tried to jump down from the stage during his hit "Memories" and he severely injured his foot in the process.

He took an awkward tumble and immediately winced as he rolled to the ground. He was seen being escorted off by two men as he was not able to put weight on his leg.

He confirmed in a late-night social media post that he did in fact break his foot.

The Insano World Tour is named after Cudi's ninth studio album, "Insano," which was released in January and features 20 tracks.

Shad Powers of the Palm Springs Desert Sun contributed to the report.

The Battle Over Classic Rock Band the Guess Who Just Went Nuclear

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

For the past six months, Burton Cummings, founding singer and songwriter of classic rock group the Guess Who , has been in a bitter legal dispute to wrest control of his old band’s legacy. Now he’s adopting an aggressive and relatively unheard of approach to make that happen: giving up on certain royalties so the band can’t play his songs.

As Rolling Stone previously reported , Cummings and original Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman sued the current iteration of the Guess Who (as well as the band’s original drummer and bass player Garry Peterson and Jim Kale) last October, alleging that the group that currently holds the Guess Who trademark is “a cover band” using the original group’s recording in ads “in an effort to boost the Cover Band’s ticket sales for live performances and to give the false impression that Plaintiffs are performing.”

“I’m willing to do anything to stop the fake band; they’re taking [Bachman and my] life story and pretending it’s theirs,” Cummings tells Rolling Stone. “They’re not the people who made these records, and they shouldn’t act like they did. This doesn’t stop this cover band from playing their shows, it just stops them from playing the songs I wrote. If the songs are performed by the fake Guess Who, they will be sued for every occurrence.”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Not a lot of artists are both the writer and the publisher on their songs, and Burton Cummings fortunately is, so this is a very rare case where the artist can take this action,” Yu says. “And I think this situation shows the direct nexus between their false advertising and who they say they are.”

The move is focused on agreements set through groups called performing rights organizations (PROs). The termination targets all the venues the band would play. Almost every concert venue in the country has blanket agreements with various PROs such as BMI and ASCAP, who collect royalties on behalf of songwriters for the public performances of their works. If a venue has licensing agreements in place, the venues’ artists are free to cover any song from the PROs’ repertory.

By Thursday morning, the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama, and the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida — who would’ve hosted the Guess Who’s next three shows — announced cancellations as well. Tickets for shows beyond those dates remain on sale as of this article’s publication.

An attorney for the Guess Who didn’t respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the shows. In December, the band took to social media calling Cummings’ and Bachman’s suit “meritless.” In a memorandum, the band argued that “there is no dispute that Defendants lawfully own ‘The Guess Who’ trademark,” and that Consumers who see an ad for a concert by the Guess Who would not reasonably assume that Bachman and Cummings are performing merely because they were in the band many years ago.”

Assuming the group does play the classic-era songs at their upcoming shows, both the band and the venue they played at could be on the hook for legal recourse, Cummings and his team tell Rolling Stone .

But like most nuclear options, Cummings’ strategy doesn’t come without the risk of some mutually assured destruction. While terminating the rights complicates the current Guess Who’s performances, it may also significantly hit Cummings’ own earnings. Aside from working with concert venues, PROs also collect royalties from when songs are played on the radio, on TV shows, or even when they’re played in the background at restaurants or shopping malls. With the license terminated, Cummings will likely lose out on seeing those royalty payments. And that’s not just on the versions he recorded, but on covers such as Lenny Kravitz’s Grammy-winning “American Woman” cover.

The termination is the latest development in a decadeslong dispute that bubbled over with last year’s lawsuit . The fight began when the band’s original bassist, Jim Kale, obtained the trademark to the Guess Who name in 1986, as the band hadn’t secured the trademark before then . From then on, Kale had organized several tours using the Guess Who name featuring a heavily rotating lineup.

By the late 1980s, the Guess Who’s original drummer, Garry Peterson, joined the band as well. Kale retired in 2016, leaving Peterson as the only original member left. But he doesn’t play every show, Bachman and Cummings alleged, meaning some shows feature no original members of their band.

Since Cummings filed the suit, he says that the band had removed his access to the Guess Who’s Spotify for Artists page. (When the suit filed last fall, the band’s Spotify page showed a picture of the current Guess Who lineup, but as of publication, it’s now a picture of the old band.)

Cummings also tells Rolling Stone that within the past month, the band’s lawyers said they’d “sue me if I ever even say I was ever in the Guess Who.” “You know how ridiculous this is? What next, can I not say I was born and raised in Winnipeg? That I’m Canadian?”
