The Rohan Palace or Hôtel de Ville, the Bordeaux Town Hall

Bordeaux’s Rohan Palace or Hôtel de Ville is an important historical building located in the city of Bordeaux, France. It was built between 1771 and 1784 and was originally the Archbishop’s Palace of Bordeaux. After the French Revolution, it became the Bordeaux City Hall in 1835. It now houses an art collection and is used for official events and ceremonies. Recently, it suffered an arson attack during the protests – find out all about it!

History of the Rohan Palace in Bordeaux

The Rohan Palace in Bordeaux, France, has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century. Originally, it was built as the Archbishop’s Palace of Bordeaux between the years 1771 and 1784. This majestic mansion was designed by architect Richard-François Bonfin, intended to reflect the status and rank of the Archbishop of Bordeaux at the time, Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec, Prince of Rohan. The construction of the palace was an ambitious process that sought to replace the old medieval archbishopric with a more imposing building in accordance with the standards of the time. During this period, Bordeaux was a prosperous city and this was reflected in the architecture of its most emblematic buildings.

The French Revolution and the Rohan Palace

With the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 , everything changed for the Rohan Palace and for the country in general. After the Revolution, the palace underwent a major transformation in its use and purpose. In 1791, it became the prefecture of the department of Gironde and later, in 1835, it became the Bordeaux Town Hall, i.e. the city’s Town Hall .

The Third Republic and the Palais de Rohan

Over the years, the Palais de Rohan has witnessed many historical events and challenges. During the Third Republic , in 1889, the City Council Chamber was designed, adapting the palace to the new official architecture. However, this period also brought looting and damage to the structure of the palace, including the destruction of part of its gardens and the loss of valuable works of art.

Fortunately, after the devastation of World War II, the Palais de Rohan was restored and regained its original function as Bordeaux’s Town Hall . Today, the palace continues to play an important role in the life of the city, being the administrative center and an emblematic venue for official events and ceremonies.

Architecture and design of the Rohan Palace

The Rohan Palace in Bordeaux stands out for its impressive architecture and design, reflecting the opulence and elegance of the era in which it was built. Architectural style

The architect Richard-François Bonfin managed to capture these influences in every detail of the building.

During mass protests in March 2023, a fire was set on the portico surrounding the building and giving access to the atrium. For 15 minutes, a mob of protesters wreaked havoc in the palace before firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

The Hôtel de Ville, Bordeaux’s city hall, is one of the most impressive landmarks in the city. Facing the cathedral, the city hall or Palais Rohan as it is also known, is a stately and imposing structure featuring lavishly decorated interiors lit with chandeliers. Enter the gardens behind the palace and discover one of the best art galleries in the city.

The palace was built in the decadent pre-revolutionary period of the 1770s. After the political uprising of 1789, it housed the Gironde department of the new government and became the town hall in 1837. In its gardens, don’t miss the art gallery, which was built toward the end of the 19th century.

Step through the gates on Place Pey-Berland into the Cour d'Honneur, the stone courtyard at the front of the palace. Get out your camera for shots of the imposing, symmetrical façade. Look for the sculptures and water features that are often displayed in the courtyard.

Tour the inside of the building to see the chambers, which are decorated in different styles. The municipal council room was designed in the late 19th century and features darker colors. This contrasts with the bright white reception rooms, which are adorned with gold detailing. Climb the Grand Escalier d'Honneur, a stone staircase celebrated for its elegant masonry.

Head to the gardens for views of the palace from a different angle. The gardens also contain the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which includes paintings by famous names such as Brueghel, Delacroix and Matisse as well as pieces by artists from Bordeaux. Browse the museum’s north wing to see works from the last two centuries and venture to the south wing for earlier pieces.

To get here, ride the tram to the Hôtel de Ville stop. Tours of the palace operate on Wednesdays and are in French. The Musée des Beaux-Arts is open every day except Tuesdays and public holidays. Adults are required to pay an admission fee, but children can enter the museum for free.

Palais Rohan : découvrez l’histoire de l’hôtel de Ville !

Initialement construit pour l’archevêque bordelais Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan en 1771, le palais Rohan a revêtu au cours des années plusieurs fonctions… Retour sur l’histoire de ce bâtiment iconique de la Ville de Bordeaux ! 

Situé au beau milieu de la place Pey Berland, tout près de la cathédrale Saint-André , le palais Rohan fait partie intégrante du paysage bordelais… Mais connaissez-vous son histoire ? Construit entre 1771 et 1784 sur ordre de l’archevêque de Bordeaux Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan , la bâtiment prend la place d’un vieil archevêché présent depuis le Moyen Âge.

Tout juste arrivé de Paris, c’est l’ingénieur Joseph Étienne  qui prend en charge l’étude du palais et des lotissements. Le projet initial comporte un bâtiment principal possédant trois niveaux , accompagné d’une grande cour à l’arrière ! 

Mécontent des résultats de Joseph Étienne, l’archevêque Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan fait ensuite appel à l’architecte  Richard-François Bonfin pour achever les travaux.

Durant la Révolution française, l’hôtel de l’archevêché devient le nouveau conseil général du département avant d’abriter en 1791 le siège du Tribunal révolutionnaire , puis l’hôtel de préfecture !

Le palais devient également la demeure de Napoléon 1er en 1808, puis celle de Louis XVIII pendant vingt ans à partir de 1815… Il faudra attendre 1835 pour que l’ancien palais royal se transforme en hôtel de Ville tel qu’on le connaît aujourd’hui !

L’édifice est réalisé dans un style néoclassique monumental et reprend la configuration des hôtels particuliers , entre cour et jardin. Derrière sa façade de style Louis XVI , on retrouve l’un des plus beaux escaliers de France, considéré encore aujourd’hui comme un chef-d’œuvre de taille de la pierre… Alors, qu’attendez-vous pour aller visiter le palais Rohan ?!

Entre quartier historique et quartier se voulant moderne, nous vous guidons aujourd’hui à travers les quartiers de l’ Hôtel de Ville et celui de Mériadeck. Situés dans l’hyper-centre de la ville de Bordeaux, lieux historiques et lieux culturels se côtoient faisant de ces quartiers des incontournables touristiques !

Un peu d’histoire !

A travers cette visite guidée, nous allons vous faire découvrir deux quartiers au passé bien différent.

Le quartier de l’ Hotel de ville (aussi nommé quartier Pey Berland ou encore Saint Christoly) est le quartier le plus vieux de Bordeaux qui remonterait à la période romaine. La vie était alors rythmée autour de l’église Saint Christoly qui se trouvait à la place de l’actuel centre commercial « Saint Christoly ». Il s’y trouvait même un port puisqu’il se trouvait à l’embouchure de 2 affluents de la Garonne.

Le nom Pey Berland apparu lorsque Pierre Berland (Pey Berland en Gascon) devint archevêque de Bordeaux de 1430 à 1456 et œuvra pour de nombreuses choses comme la Tour Pey Berland ou encore la création de l’université catholique en 1441.

Aujourd’hui le quartier de l’Hotel de Ville est un quartier vivant, abritant de nombreux musées et monuments emblématiques comme la cathédrale Saint André ou encore le Palais Rohan .

Son voisin, le quartier Mériadeck a, quant à lui, un passé beaucoup plus récent. Mériadeck fut longtemps des terrains marécageux impraticables. Au milieu du 15ème siècle, Bordeaux est le théâtre de nombreuses épidémies et le marécage est alors pointé du doigt, on décide donc de l’assainir à partir du 16ème siècle.

Tout s’accélère lorsque L’archevêque François de Soudis voit en ces terrains la possibilité de reconstruire un lieu pour les Chartreux, qui se retrouvaient à l’époque sans monastère. Mériadeck devient alors le lieu privilégié de promenade des bordelais avec des allées et des prairies même s’il est toujours en dehors des remparts.

En 1640 lors de la Fronde, tout cet arrangement est détruit et les marécages reprennent peu à peu leur place. Il faudra attendre que Monseigneur Ferdinand Maximilien de Mériadec de Rohan, nommé archevêque de Bordeaux en 1769, décide d’acheter les terrains afin de reconstruire un archevêché: le palais Rohan.

Pour autant, le quartier souffre toujours d’une mauvaise réputation, est mal assainis, mal entretenu. En 1971, il est décidé de reconstruire un quartier plus moderne, « l’ancien » Mériadeck est alors rasé pour renaître de ses cendres, plus moderne.

Partie 1 – Quartier de l’Hôtel de ville: Du temple du hâ à la place Pey-Berland

Pour la première partie de cet itinéraire, nous vous proposons de vous guider à travers le quartier de l’ Hotel de ville . Rendez-vous au temple du hâ (rue du hâ), pour notre premier arrêt.

Temple du hâ

Nous débutons cette visite guidée par le temple du Hâ. Edifié entre 1625 et 1638, ce monument ne fut pas toujours le temple protestant de Bordeaux. Ce lieu fut la chapelle de la congrégation des Filles de Notre-Dame. Celle-ci fut créée par Jeanne de Lestonnac, la nièce de Montaigne, afin d’éduquer les filles de la noblesse et de la bourgeoisie qui avaient été retirées à leur famille protestante.

Durant la Révolution française, toutes les congrégations sont dissoutes, on supprime donc la chapelle aux Filles de Notre-Dame pour transformer le lieu en magasin de fourrage pour les troupes. Tous les tableaux, sculptures et objets religieux sont aussi supprimés.

Ce n’est qu’en 1805 que l’édifice devient un culte protestant sous l’impulsion de Napoléon qui l’offre au culte réformé. Le monument prend alors le nom de « temple du hâ » en référence au nom de la rue où il se trouve qui est elle-même nommée ainsi dû à sa proximité avec le château du Hâ, aujourd’hui disparu.

Remontez maintenant la rue du Hâ jusqu’à la rue du Maréchal Joffre, tournez à gauche et découvrez le prochain monument de cette visite guidée à votre droite: le palais de justice.

Palais de justice

Vous voici devant le palais de Justice de Bordeaux. Ce bâtiment de style néoclassique a été conçu par Adolphe Thiac entre 1835 et 1846. Il est d’ailleurs la dernière grande construction néoclassique Bordelaise et a été largement inspirée du temple d’Aphaïa.

La ville de Bordeaux n’avait plus de Palais de Justice depuis la Révolution puisque le Palais de l’Ombrière où il était installé dut détruit. Lors d’un décret en 1808, on décida qu’il fallait un nouveau palais de justice mais il fallut attendre 1831 pour que le projet devienne concret. Il est alors décidé que le palais de justice et une prison soient construit à l’emplacement du Château du Hâ, qui sera détruit en 1835 juste avant le début des travaux.

Vous pouvez maintenant remonter le cours d’Albret puis tourner à droite sur la rue des frères Bonie pour rejoindre le Tribunal de Grande Instance ainsi que les tours du Hâ.

Les tours du hâ / le TGI

Vous voici arrivé devant le Tribunal de Grande Instance ainsi que les derniers vestiges du château du Hâ, évoqué plus haut.

Le tribunal de grande instance (TGI) construit en 1998, à l’endroit même où l’ancienne prison avait été construite. Il fut élaboré par le cabinet d’architecte Richard Rogers et est composé de 7 coques en bois qui sont les sept salles d’audience. Vous pouvez observer le reste de la structure, essentiellement en verre, comme pour évoquer l’idée de transparence, d’ouverture et d’accessibilité du système judiciaire français.

Sur sa gauche vous pourrez découvrir les deux tours du Hâ ainsi qu’une partie de l’enceinte qui ont survécu à la démolition du château du Hâ. A l’origine, le château du Hâ fut construit en même temps que le château Trompette (à l’emplacement de la place des Quinconces ) pour célébrer la victoire de Charles VII contre les anglais en 1453 et ainsi protéger la ville d’une éventuelle offensive des anglais. Il accueillait notamment les troupes royales avant de devenir, en 1470, la résidence de Charles de Valois, duc de Guyenne.

Durant le mois d’octobre 1572, le château servira de refuge aux protestants après la célèbre nuit de la Saint-Barthélemy.

Dès 1731, le château n’a plus aucune fonction défensive ou résidentielle, il devient donc une prison civile jusqu’en 1835, lorsque l’on décida de le démolir pour y installer le palais de Justice ainsi qu’une autre prison.

Les seules survivantes sont ainsi les tours des Anglais et des Minimes dont les murs font jusqu’à 4,40m d’épaisseur due à l’usage défensif du château .

Vous pouvez à nouveau emprunter le cours d’Albret jusqu’à l’imposant portail du Jardin de la Mairie.

Le Musée des Beaux-Art et le Jardin de la mairie

Espaces verts, fleurs, fontaine et statues, voilà ce que vous découvrirez lorsque vous franchirez le pas de l’imposant et magnifique portail en fer forgé du jardin.

Vous pouvez d’ailleurs retrouver sur celui-ci les armoiries de la ville de Bordeaux surmontées d’une couronne.

Ce jardin fut créé au 19ème siècle pour accompagner le palais Rohan dont vous pouvez d’ailleurs observer la façade arrière.

Tout autour de l’imposante fontaine, vous pouvez profiter d’un hectare d’espace vert et de ses statues comme celle de la Nymphe de Diane.

Directement lié au jardin de la Mairie se trouve le musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux . Un bâtiment imposant construit entre 1875 et 1881 et qui abrite près de 9500 peintures et dessins. Pour tous les amateurs d’art ou les curieux, c’est l’un des lieux culturels les plus importants de Bordeaux, nous vous conseillons donc de le visiter si vous le souhaitez.

Empruntez maintenant la rue Elisée Reclus pour rejoindre la place Pey-Berland.

Le Palais Rohan / l’hôtel de ville

La place Pey-Berland est un incontournable de la ville. Vous y trouverez de célèbres monuments, notamment le Palais Rohan .

La construction de cet imposant bâtiment fut commandée par l’archevêque Ferdinand Maximilien de Mériadec, prince de Rohan, car il considéré l’ancienne demeure des archevêques de Bordeaux était trop inconfortable. Il obtient alors l’autorisation d’assainir les marais situés dernière les remparts et d’y construire son palais et autres bâtiments: c’est la naissance du quartier Mériadeck. Pourtant, l’archevêque ne vivra jamais dans son palais puisqu’il fut construit par Joseph Etienne entre 1772 et 1778 et que le Prince de Rohan quitta Bordeaux avant la fin des travaux.

Le bâtiment continuera d’appartenir à l’Archevêché jusqu’à la Révolution, il sera ensuite transformé en hôtel du département en 1791, accueillera la préfecture de la Gironde, deviendra le palais impérial pour Napoléon 1er en 1808, puis un château royal en 1815 sous le roi Louis XVIII avant de devenir l’hôtel de ville en 1836.

Le premier maire de Bordeaux fut Pierre Lambert, élu en 1208. L’hotel de ville est alors établi dans une simple maison de la rue Saint-Pierre. Ce n’est qu’en 1295 qu’il déménagera à côté de la Grosse Cloche, en face de l’église Saint- Eloi. En 1759, la première pierre du nouvel hôtel de Ville fut posée mais le projet est arrêté en 1773. L’hôtel de ville fut alors déplacé dans les locaux du collège de Guyenne. En 1791, il fut de nouveau déplacé dans les locaux de l’ancien collège de la Madeleine. En 1836, il s’installe définitivement dans le Palais Rohan.

Vous pouvez évidemment visiter ce palais, le mercredi à 14h30 et le vendredi à 10h, en réservant votre place auprès de l’office de tourisme. Vous pourrez notamment découvrir le magnifique escalier d’honneur en pierre de taille conçu par Bonfin et considéré comme l’un des plus beaux de France.

La Cathédrale Saint André

Juste en face, vous trouverez la fameuse Cathédrale Saint André , le plus imposant des monuments religieux de Bordeaux. Avec son style gothique, elle est classée au patrimoine mondiale depuis 1998.

Elle se tient sur la place d’un culte beaucoup plus ancien, qui remonterait au 5ème siècle et qui aurait subi des destructions pendant les invasions médiévales. En 1060, le pape Urbain II, fervent prêcheur de la croisant, consacre un nouvel édifice roman, qui fut la première cathédrale de Bordeaux. Au fur et à mesure des siècles, l’édifice évoluera dans le style gothique grâce à des travaux, notamment pendant le 12ème siècle grâce à l’archevêque Bertrand de Goth.

L’ensemble des façades sont richement décorées, exceptée celle qui fait face au Palais Rohan puisqu’elle était proche des remparts, détruits depuis. Elle est d’ailleurs directement héritée de la construction initiale du 11ème siècle.

Vous pouvez aussi observer les portes et leurs sculptures, notamment la célèbre Porte Royale, construite en 1250, où vous pourrez retrouver le jugement dernier sculpté sur son tympan.

Vous pouvez aussi visiter l’intérieur qui vous en mettra plein les yeux et voir le trésor de la cathédrale, qui regroupe des tableaux, statues, enluminures et objets liturgiques datant du 13ème au 18ème. La salle du trésor est accessible le mercredi et le samedi (14h30 à 17h30).

Vous pourrez aussi observer le magnifique orgue ou encore les vitraux.

Pour l’anecdote, la cathédrale a accueilli 2 mariages royaux: celui d’Aliénor d’Aquitaine et du futur roi de France Louis VII en 1137 pui celui de Louis XIII et d’Anne d’Autriche en 1615.

La tour Pey Berland

Qu’est-ce que serait la place Pey-Berland sans sa tour Pey-Berland ? Ce clocher, isolé de la cathédrale doit son nom à L’archevêque Pey-Berland, qui est d’ailleurs à l’origine de cette tour à partir 1440.

Le clocher qui datait du 12ème siècle était devenu insuffisant, il fallut donc en construire un plus robuste. Dû à l’instabilité des sols marécageux, on décida de construire le clocher à l’écart de la cathédrale afin que les vibrations des cloches n’endommagent pas l’édifice.

La tour perdit sa flèche suite à une tempête et après la Révolution, elle sera remplacée en 1851 par une statue en métal doré de Notre-Dame d’Aquitaine qui est d’ailleurs installée de telle sorte qu’elle soit dirigée vers la région du Médoc, lieu de naissance de Pey-Berland.

Si vous le souhaitez, vous pouvez bien évidemment visiter la tour. Il vous faudra gravir les 231 marches pour arriver à 50 mètres de hauteur et ainsi avoir une vue imprenable sur la ville. Elle est ouverte tous les jours et le prix du billet est de 6€ (ou 5€ avec réduction).

Nous achevons la première partie de cet itinéraire avec le magnifique panorama qu’offre la tour Pey-Berland. Vous allez maintenant pouvoir visiter le quartier Mériadeck.

Partie 2 – Quartier Mériadeck: De la librairie Mollat au cimetière de la chartreuse

Nous allons maintenant vous faire découvrir le quartier Mériadeck et ses lieux incontournables. Remontez la rue Vital Carles pour rejoindre la libraire Mollat.

La librairie Mollat

Nous vous proposons de faire un arrêt à la librairie Mollat, célèbre dans tout Bordeaux pour être la première librairie indépendante de France (en terme de chiffre d’affaires et d’ouvrages en rayon). Si vous êtes amoureux de la littérature ou que vous cherchez de la documentation sur Bordeaux, c’est un endroit à ne pas rater. Avec ses 2700 m², vous y trouverez forcément votre bonheur.

Pour l’anecdote, elle est située à l’emplacement de la dernière maison de Montesquieu à Bordeaux. Originellement, elle se trouvait dans les Galeries Bordelaises. Elle a déménagé rue Vital Carles en 1928 pour avoir un espace de vente plus grand.

Vous pouvez maintenant emprunter la rue Porte-Dijeaux, flâner dans ses petites boutiques jusqu’à la Porte Dijeaux .

La Porte Dijeaux

Voilà une des nombreuses portes de Bordeaux: la Porte Dijeaux . Elle était l’entrée ouest de la ville à l’époque Romaine et se nommait alors Porte Jovia. Elle fut ensuite prénommée Porte Dauphine sous le règne de Louis XIV en l’honneur du jeune dauphin de France qui deviendra plus tard le roi Louis XVI.

Elle a été reconstruite entre 1748 et 1753 par Michel Voisin à partir des plans de Nicolas Portier après que l’Intendant Tourny ait décidé de déconstruire les portes fortifiées qu’il jugeait inutile.

Concernant l’origine du nom de cette porte, deux hypothèses se font face: la première tendrait à dire que cela en rapport au temple de Jupiter qui se dressait à cet emplacement à l’époque Gallo-romaines. Le nom actuel serait alors un dérivé de Jòu signifiant « de Jupiter » en gascon. L’autre hypothèse serait que le nom soit un dérivé de « porte des Gious ».

Vous pouvez maintenant descendre la rue Bouffard pour rejoindre notre prochain arrêt: le musée des arts décoratifs et du Design.

Le Musée des arts décoratifs et du design

Le musée des arts décoratifs et du design a pris place dans l’ancien hôtel de Lalande, hôtel particulier conçu par Etienne Laclotte en 1779 pour une riche famille de parlementaires bordelais. La ville de Bordeaux acquiert l’hôtel en 1880 pour y loger les services police puis il deviendra en 1887 une caserne municipale qui servira d’écurie, de magasin à foin et de sellerie. Dans le jardin arrière on y construira aussi une prison municipale.

Ce n’est qu’en 1924 que l’hôtel est libéré pour la création d’un musée d’art ancien. Il sera fermé quelques année durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale puis réouvert et réaménagé le 2 juillet 1955 sous le nom de « musée des arts décoratifs et du design ».

En plus des collections permanentes, il vous est possible de visiter quelques pièces où a été recréée l’élégance de la vie bourgeoise du 18ème au 19ème siècle, notamment une riche collection de faïences bordelaises.

Attention, le musée est fermé tous les mardis.

Empruntez maintenant la rue Boulan et traversez le cours d’Albret afin de rejoindre le centre commercial Mériadeck.

Le centre commercial Mériadeck

Le Centre Commercial Mériadeck est le plus grand des pôles commerciaux dans l’hyper-centre de Bordeaux. Inauguré en 1980, il fait partie du projet de refonte du quartier Mériadeck, souhaité par la ville pour créer un quartier plus moderne à la place du quartier insalubre de l’époque.

Avec plus de 10 000 m², vous y trouverez de quoi faire une pause shopping ou de quoi vous restaurer pour reprendre des forces avant la suite de la visite guidée.

Vous pouvez à présent emprunter la rue Claude Bonnier en longeant la voie de tram et continuer sur la rue Courpon. Arrivé au bout, tournez à droite pour rejoindre l’église Saint Bruno.

L’Église Saint Bruno

L’église Saint Bruno est le seul bâtiment du couvent des chartreux qui a survécu à la destruction qui s’est produit au 19ème siècle. Celle-ci a été édifiée entre 1611 et 1622 grâce Blaise de Gascq (ou frère Ambroise), un riche noble bordelais devenu chartreux et à l’archevêque François de Sourdis.

L’intérieur est richement décoré et vous pourrez même observer la magnifique peinture trompe l’oeil du peintre italien Jean Antoine Berinzage qui recouvre les murs et la voûte.

Le cimetière de la Chartreuse

En face de l’église, vous trouvez le cimetière de la Chartreuse. Vous pourrez observer dans ces 25 hectares un large panel d’arts funéraires du 19ème et du 20ème siècle.

A l’origine, cet espace était l’enclos des chartreux, il sera décidé de le transformer en cimetière en 1791.

Le cimetière accueillera notamment les célèbres momies de Saint Michel pendant quelques années et vous y trouverez le cénotaphe de Goya et le tombeau d’Henri de Fonfrède.

Attention cependant pour les photographes en herbe, vous ne pouvez pas photographier n’importe quelle sépulture, seulement les plus célèbres. Pour cela vous pouvez demander à l’accueil du site, ils vous indiqueront les tombes concernées.

La séance de patinage est à 8€ avec les patins et est gratuite pour les moins de 5 ans !

Comptez 16€50 pour une session de kart sur glace.

Attention: les horaires d’ouvertures peuvent être modifiés les jours de match puisque la patinoire accueille l’équipe bordelaise de hockey sur glace: les Boxers de Bordeaux.

Si vous n’êtes pas très à l’aise sur des patins, on vous propose alors un petit tour au bowling de Mériadeck, situé sur la Terrasse Front du Médoc.

Le bowling ouvre ses portes à partir de 14h. Il vous est possible de challenger votre famille ou vos amis sur les pistes de bowling mais aussi autour des tables de billard. Vous pouvez aussi profiter du bar et des quelques encas que propose le lieu.
