See Coldplay up close and in person at Tokyo Dome for one of their first tours post-pandemic.

What to expect

The Music of the Spheres World Tour is Coldplay’s first live event, and after visiting Europe and the Americas, they’re heading to Japan on November 6 and 7.

The concert is split into four acts — Planets, Moons, Stars, and Home, representing Coldplay’s journey of discovery and music. You’ll hear classics and some of their most popular collaborations with other artists, such as their hit song “MY Universe” with virtual BTS members.

And speaking of collabs, the Japan section of the tour comes with a special guest — Yoasobi! The home act usually will include joint and individual performances between Coldplay and their guests. Yoasobi fans should expect something special, so keep your eyes peeled.

Unfortunately, tickets to the event sold out almost immediately in all countries. However, if you’re a fan, the atmosphere around the Dome preconcert will be worth the visit!

A Music Lover's Guide to Tokyo

A Tokyo Jazz Night

Osaka Hub Writer

Japanese pop? Live jazz? Underground vinyl? No matter what type of musical entertainment you’re after, you’ll find something in Tokyo to suit your taste. Culture Trip has rounded up the best venues, record shops and musical emporiums for the ultimate tour around the Japanese capital.

Tokyo is an eclectic city and the music scene is no different. Though not internationally recognised like London or New Orleans, it’s among one of the most exciting and unique hubs for creativity. Pop music dominates – Arashi , Kyary Pamyu Pamyu , AKB48 and Utada Hikaru are among the most famous Tokyo artists, but truly anything goes. Record stores thrive, underground scenes flourish (if you know where to find them), and tiny niche bars dedicated to obscure genres are everywhere. Below are the best places in Tokyo for music lovers.

The best record stores in Tokyo

1. tower records, the best place to browse cds.

Bookstore, Store, Shop

Tower Records in Shibuya

2. Big Love Records, a nostalgic record store and bar all in one

Shop, Store

3. Five G Music Technology, the place to nerd out over Japanese instruments

Where to see live music in tokyo, 4. liquidroom, tokyo’s most iconic livehouse.

Music Venue

5. Unit, the place to see big name acts up close

6. jazz spot intro, the wildest jam session in town.

Bar, Japanese

Intimate Intro is one of the best jazz clubs in the city . The wild vibe is apparent in the club’s motto: “smokin’ drinkin’ never thinkin'”. Yet a visit to the regular, late-night jam sessions is sure to convince any listener of the talent that comes through here. Sometimes the bartending owner himself joins in, trading a glass for a saxophone. The musical experimentation often goes on well into the night, if not until the sun comes up. And the best part? Listening is free.

Cafés and restaurants with good music

7. meikyoku kissa lion, a historic café that only plays classical songs.

Cafe, European

Meikyoku Kissa Lion is a landmark relic of the past. Open since 1926, this Shibuya staple is one of the few meikyoku kissa (classical music cafés) left in Japan. Kissa is short for kissaten , a traditional coffee shop inspired by European cafés. Lion continues an almost century-old tradition of drinking coffee while listening to classical music in near silence. It resembles a storied church or perhaps a retro theatre, with chandeliers, cracked wooden accents, and plush chairs laid out in rows in front of the massive wooden speakers.

8. Hands Expo Cafe, a cozy coffee shop with traditional Japanese music

Cafe, Japanese

Hands Expo Cafe is a great place to visit for an all-around Tokyo experience. The food is delicious and beautifully presented (Culture Trip recommends the pancakes), there’s a shop stocked with cute souvenirs and edible treats, and musicians take to the stage weekly. One of the main draws of Hands Expo Cafe is the regular traditional Japanese music performances . Here you can experience the sounds of the fue (bamboo flute), taiko (drum) and biwa (lute).

Tokyo nightclubs with beats you can dance to

9. koara, a dj bar with good vibes and great music.

Bar, Pub Grub

10. Sound Museum Vision, Shibuya’s hottest nightclub

Bar, Nightclub, Pub Grub, Japanese

Shops with signs hanging in the streets of Golden Gai, Shinjuku

11. Little Soul Café, for the best in soothing soul

Great music festivals in tokyo, 12. summer sonic, japan's best music festival.

Concert Hall

One of Japan’s biggest summer music festivals is Summer Sonic, an annual event that draws thousands of fans from around the world. Held simultaneously in Chiba (Tokyo) and Osaka, the event has featured big international stars such as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Metallica, as well as underground up-and-comers.

13. Ultra Japan, an international electronic dance party

This worldwide electronic music festival takes place annually in Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay and one of the city’s most iconic entertainment districts. Over 400,000 festival-goers show up every year to listen to the likes of deadmau5, David Guetta, Afrojack and Tiesto over a three-day period. And the visual and light displays are a sight to behold, too.

This is an updated version of an article originally created by Alicia Joy .

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

All Japan Tours offers a wide range of music-related options when looking to plan your tour in Japan with your concert group or band. We will craft the perfect itinerary that makes your music tour of Japan unforgettable. If your ensemble would like to plan a performance in Japan, talk with our travel professionals about putting together a music exchange program, where your student group can study music together with students at a local school. Upon request, we can also arrange workshops with local music clubs or even famous conductors during your stay. If you think your musicians might like to perform together with a local Japanese school choir or orchestra, ask us about planning a shared concert. We can add cultural exchange programs featuring lessons in many traditional Japanese cultural experiences, such as playing Taiko drums or learning tea ceremony, and can even include homestays with local families. We also offer tours to all the most popular tourist spots in the country that you may want to see. We can arrange a variety of public venues for concert performances, including schools, cultural center, concert halls and parks – even Tokyo Disneyland. If you dream of performing at a Japanese music festival, we can, depending on your travel dates, schedule your band’s appearance onstage at one of these events. We customize your music tour to fit the needs of your group, and can prepare the hotel accommodations, special transportation requirements and meal arrangements that will make your concert tour enjoyable.

Music Exchange Programs & Workshops

Enjoy a highly rewarding music exchange or workshop with a Japanese music club, school band, ensemble, or choir. Travel to a local school, or meet a Japanese band, where you will have the opportunity to trade and perform each others' musical compositions. An exchange of musical performances between concert groups offers a musical challenge and opens each group of musicians up to different methods of performance. It is also a style of communication unlike any other - a one-of-a-kind method of cross-cultural understanding using music as a universal language. Our travel professionals can connect your student ensemble or choir with Japanese schools, music clubs, or other bands to help orchestrate a safe, enjoyable and engaging music exchange. We can also arrange a workshops with local band directors, or even a performance with a famous conductor.

Concert Performance Venues

The addition of a concert performance to your tour itinerary provides your school band, choral ensemble, or orchestra with a fantastic opportunity to perform abroad and an unforgettable memory for you and your students. We can arrange for a concert performance venue to suit the experience you desire for your band or student group. Let us use our expertise to help you iron out the details - we will help you find the best locations for your performance venue, whether you are looking to perform at a school auditorium, cultural center, concert hall, public square, park, and more. We can even arrange for a performance at Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea. Depending on your timeframe, it is also possible to perform at one of Japan's many festival events. We can go above and beyond by providing an extra advertising service for your group’s performance in the form of ads, flyers, and local announcements. Our advertising service will bring awareness of your concert to the local community, making the performance on your Japan tour more unforgettable.

Let us arrange your concert performances at Japan’s temples, shrines, schools, concert halls, theme parks, or other venues. Participation in festive events are also possible, depending on the specific travel dates of your group. To go above and beyond, an extra advertising service will be provided for your group’s performance in the form of ads, flyers, and local announcements. This will bring awareness to the local community, ensuring an unforgettable full house experience.

Shared Concert

Imagine your student music class, band, or concert trip to Japan including a shared concert - you and your musicians performing beside a Japanese music club or band in a school auditorium, culture center, or other public venue - and then talk to our travel professionals about adding it to your tour itinerary! We put you in contact with local Japanese schools, music clubs, orchestras - whatever complements your music style, and then plan the arrangements that will make your shared concert a success. Our company will work with you to carefully organize the details of your tour - private transportation to and from the concert venue, pleasant accommodations convenient to the location, suitable locations to rehearse, and the amenities that your music group needs to make your stay comfortable.

Perform at a Music Festival

Classical Orchestra, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Choral, Traditional - these styles of music and more are represented at Japanese music festivals. While there are music festival events to enliven every season, the largest take place during the summer months. Each year, musicians the world over come to enchant audiences in Japan with skillful demonstrations of their art. And no matter the genre, if you and your music group, be it student band, orchestra, ensemble, or concert choir are considering a tour to Japan, ask one of our travel professionals about adding an appearance onstage at a music festival to your tour itinerary! We can plan your schedule for your festival performance, rehearsal locations for your band before the festival, and arrange the time you need to network with local or international bands that may be performing.

Cultural Exchange Program

If your student band or concert tour group has the desire to learn a Japanese instrument, inquire with our travel professionals about setting up a Cultural Exchange Program for your tour itinerary. The 13-stringed koto, the long-necked shamisen, the pear-shaped biwa, taiko drums of any size - our company can arrange demonstration lessons for any Japanese instrument that may interest you. This type of cultural exchange brings a more exclusive level of local immersion to your tour, as well as opportunities for students to enjoy cross-cultural communication through music. Many other uniquely Japanese experiences can be included in your cultural exchange program. Ask us about adding lessons in tea ceremony, writing Japanese calligraphy, ikebana flower-arranging, and Zen meditation to your tour itinerary.

Sightseeing in Japan

Besides cultural exchange programs and concert performances, our company offers tours that take your school band or concert group to any place in Japan that you may want to discover. Your group will have the opportunity to visit the must-see landmarks and monuments on your personal bucket list, as well as the unforgettable experiences that Japan is famed for. But depend on our travel professionals to recommend some hidden gems for a custom itinerary that takes you off the beaten path to experience Japan in a more exclusive fashion. Exploring seasonal attractions, like the winter illuminations, cherry blossoms in spring, bright autumn leaves, or the fireworks festivals in summer will make your custom tour even more unique. In addition, you can request a fully guided tour by one of our local tour guides - seasoned professionals who will assist and educate your group every step of the way.

Homestay Experience

While we take pride in finding our tour passengers the best hotel accommodations to suit their preferences, nothing can take your Japan Custom Tour to the next level of native cultural immersion like a Homestay Experience. Your group will enjoy the homegrown hospitality or "omotenashi" that Japan is famous for as you stay with a welcoming Japanese family, while also discovering native traditions from a local's point of view. Many homestay accommodations, known as "minshuku", are usually located in rural areas, which comes with the opportunity to appreciate a more traditional Japanese lifestyle. While there, you can enjoy more homemade Japanese meals, and can have the chance to pick up more of the local language.

24/7 Guided Tours

When you travel with All Japan Tours, you have no need to worry about communication problems, lack of directions, or safety concerns while on a tour. Our tours are fully guided by professional tour guides who remain with you and your group the full length of your trip. Our bilingual guides will be on hand to smooth out any communication difficulties and help you work through emergencies and concerns. They even stay at the same hotel as your group, and we provide your group with contact numbers in case of emergency, so you are never out of touch with your guide or the company.

Private Coach Transportation

Perhaps one of the most difficult considerations when planning a trip to Japan for a large group is working out transportation, not only for the members of your concert group but also for any instruments and equipment you require. Booking with our company means you will be traveling to each location on luxurious private coaches. Relax in comfort as you are transported to each location without the hassle of carrying your luggage and instruments. Private coaches also ensure more time is spent visiting locations of interest to your group, and less time dealing with the hassle of transfers between public transportation services.

Hand-Picked Accommodation

Our travel professionals hand-pick the accommodations for your concert or band tour to suit your budget. We work to find your student group comfortable accommodations that are convenient to performance venues and other scheduled points on your trip itinerary. Possibilities include a youth hostel with 4-8 students per room, 3-star accommodations with twin occupancy, 4-star accommodations with twin occupancy, and so on, but was can prepare any hotel arrangements that fit the needs of your group.

Group Airfare

At All Japan Tours, we arrange your itinerary down to the last detail, and can even book your international flights to and from Japan. We work hard to find the airfares that fit the budget requirements for you and your group.

Plan your trip

When you contact us through e-mail or phone, we will discuss the type of trip and services you're interested in. There are many things to consider when planning your trip to Japan, such as your travel date, length of stay, destination cities, points of interest, and budget. Based on this information, we will create an initial “sketch” itinerary that includes an outline of recommended travel routes, destinations, accommodations, transportation type, and services we can provide. Many of our clients select one of our existing Group Tour itineraries and adjust it according to their interests, budget, and other modifications. We also have clients that have their own ideas about their intentions and plans, or even a specific itinerary in mind. However you envision your tour to Japan, you can depend on us to provide first-rate service and exceptional pricing. A minimum of 15 travelers is recommended to get the best rates. (Although we can accommodate smaller parties at higher rates).

Our Japan Custom Group Travel Inquiry Form is designed to give us a clear picture of your interests and preferences, so that we can create the ideal vacation for you. If one of our itinerary is the ideal base plan for you, please mention so in your inquiry. We will customize the plan so that the plan will meet your specific needs and desires.

I hired All Japan Tours to organize the art tour which I curated. We worked on it for two years as this was a complicated trip with a lot of different locations, strict schedule, private viewing, and everything had to be on the highest level of hotels and food. The job that Kiyoshi and his team have done is exceptional. It was so well organized that everything was on time. They are flexible, detail oriented, and lovely to work with.

If you want one of the best tours of your life go with All Japan Tours and ask for Miss Kim. We went for our honeymoon and Miss Kim made it unforgettable. We experienced more than we could have imagined and she was exceptionally helpful and informative. Japan is the most beautiful place we have seen in our lives, and when we got home we missed both the country and Miss Kim. Thank you for all that you have done. We hope to come back again! You really made our honeymoon memorable.

5/11/2023 - 5/24/2023 / 2023-05-11

The guide and bus driver were exceptional.

Everything about the tour was amazing! Our guide Miharu was a very big part of making the tour so fantastic. Her knowledge, guidance, assistance, storytelling, friendliness -- I can go on and on, and especially her humor and comedic skills had us all laughing and wanting more. She never failed to have an answer to our questions. Driver Harada-san was also so accommodating and pleasant to have as our driver -- he had the softest hands! I loved all the "hand on" activities - doing bonsai, woodcarving, making kamaboko, making tatami, dancing. It was also so special that Miharu was able to have the beautiful Japanese singer fly in just to entertain us on the bus. That was so special and I'm sure something that is not done for all tours.

Ms. Kawaguchi

Our tour was carefully curated to meet the diverse interests of our group. We had a group of family and friends, many who have traveled to Japan together several times before with a different company. AJT was by far superior in the sites and experiences they provided. The local tour guide was informative and funny and took the extra steps to make sure our tour would be memorable. We will definitely use AJT for our next trip. Thank you

She gives voice to the new era, capturing the angst and cautious optimism of Japan’s younger generations with her mesmerizing voice and powerful performances. Her major debut single, "Usseewa", released in 2020, became a social phenomenon, and her first album, "Kyougen", released in 2022, also became a long-running hit. In 2022, Ado lent her voice to the world-renowned anime film “ONE PIECE FILM RED”, singing a total of seven songs, including the theme song “New Genesis”. “New Genesis” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart, holding that spot for six consecutive weeks. This hit song also became the first-ever Japanese song to reach the #1 position on Apple Music’s Top 100: Global Chart. Amidst the massive success of her song “Show”, released in September 2023, Ado's new song, "Kura Kura", an opening theme song for the popular anime series “SPY X FAMILY”, has also become a viral sensation. The song was written by meiyo, a Japanese pop wizard behind numerous hits, and is arranged by Yoko Kanno, known for composing music for the anime series “Cowboy Bebop,” “Ghost in the Shell”, and “Genesis of Aquarion”. With her extraordinary and powerful vocals, Ado is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. As she continues to develop her talent and release new music, there is no doubt that Ado’s artistry will continue to captivate audiences around the world.

An Indie Band’s Guide to Touring Japan

The whole cliché of being “big in Japan” is a bit of a worn-out old trope these days. In a time of music streaming and the fragmentation of the music industry, becoming a full-time professional rockstar is not really the most stable career option—but, hell, if you love to party and play it’s a whole lot of fun trying.

We spoke with Marty Holoubek, an Aussie musician now living in Tokyo, and member of The Lagerphones , a six-piece jazz collective who are about to make their way back to Japan for their fourth tour in about as many years.

band tour japan

Being an incredibly talented, but rather niche band, The Lagerphones have always had to be pretty savvy when it comes to traveling on the cheap and knowing where to go and how to do it right. After a few trips (and plenty of mistake) now under their belt plus a whole community of Japanese fans, they’re now in a position where touring Japan is as familiar as doing the pub circuit back home.

Not a lot of people are lucky enough to have done what The Lagerphones have, so with the guidance of Marty, a man who’s now done it four times over, here’s what you need to know, plan and do when touring Japan.

Where to play

After being here to play with The Lagerphones (and multiple times outside of that individually), Marty and the rest of the band have a lot in the Japan live scene intel bank. Marty’s strongest piece of advice is to:

“Pick your venues well! Depending on your genre, size of the band, level of popularity portability, or whatever other extraneous factors you may have, the venue choice is critical. If you’re a band that needs backline, make sure the venue you play has backline. If you’ve never been to Japan before and you don’t have much of a following, maybe it’s best to play smaller rooms. Can you play acoustically? There’s plenty of tiny rooms to play, whether it be coffee shops or Norwegian furniture stores!”

band tour japan

Doing plenty of online homework is the best way to go about it. Trawling through pages like Tokyo Cheapo event listings as well as Tokyo Gig Guide will give you a good indicator of what type of venues host certain shows and genres.

As a general rule, the neighborhoods in Tokyo with the highest density of live houses are: Shinjuku, Nakano, Shibuya, Koenji (try Sound Studio Dom Bar) and Shimokitazawa . For Osaka, Namba/Minami and Umeda are the main nightlife areas, so start there and build up a database of venues in those neighborhoods.

Booking a room: Rules and requirements

So you’ve picked where you want to play, have some dates penciled in your calendar and are ready to reach out to the bookers, what next? Well be prepared because the system for booking a gig at a ‘live house’ in Japan is very different to getting a gig at a bar or a pub in the UK, the US or Australia.

The general protocol in Japan is for bands to essentially “rent” (in theory) venues/live houses for their shows. This means that bands who are performing are required to pay the venue for the space, typically through selling a certain number of tickets. If there aren’t enough patrons walking through the door to cover the agreed ticket number then the band have to cough up the rest. This isn’t always the case, though. If you’re a known band or a favourite of the venue owner, this fee may be overlooked; however if you’re unknown cold emailing, then expect it to be the norm.

Live show times are generally a lot earlier and far more strictly adhered to than Western contemporaries. So don’t be surprised if the show kicks off at 6pm and wraps up by 10pm. Exactly why could be anyone’s guess, but Japan is a punctual nation and last trains finish early.

Have an on-ground helper

For lack of a better term, get a ‘fixer’ if you want to ensure nothing gets too lost in terms of communication over long distances and across languages. It’s good to have someone in Japan that can help you out pre-, during and post-tour. It could be a manager, promoter, a fan of the band, a friend of a friend or some hired help off Craigslist. This person may also be key for negotiating the aforementioned booking fees with venue owners.

“Having a person on the ground really makes touring Japan way more achievable. We were very lucky enough to have had a contact in Tokyo when we first arrived and he helped organize a bunch of gigs and photoshoots which were very handy.” Also, if you’ve never been to Japan before, you soon realize how difficult the language barrier can be. Just having someone that can speak the language lowers the chances of stuff going wrong—and as the old saying goes: What can go wrong, will generally go wrong.”

Where to stay

Your choice of accommodation is going to depend on a number of factors, but the most decidedly being how big is your group and how big is the budget. Airbnb in previous times was a rather failsafe go-to but given the crackdown you may have to look a little further and get more creative .

“When we’ve done this before, the band has always opted for Airbnbs, however now so they can be difficult to find! Depending on the lengths of stay, how many you’re touring with or where you’re gigging, there are a few options: Hostels are a great option: Especially when you’re touring with a bunch of people. Securing a six or even bedroom dorm often allows ample space for gear storage and can be relatively cheap. A we recommend are are: Nui and Citan in Tokyo as well as Len in Kyoto. If you’re staying in Tokyo for a while: there are a few English-speaking real estate agents that can sort you out for long-term leases (minimum one month). It can seem a bit expensive as you have to pay bills and generally have to leave a deposit a month of rent up front (which is refunded at the end of the trip), but it’s worth considering—www.TokyoCityApartments.net is what we’ve used. If you’re band doesn’t have much gear at all, capsule hotels can workout to be pretty inexpensive! But you really must have not much gear.”

Feeding the band and crew

Aside from the fans and the beer, one of the major draw cards for The Lagerphones’ regular returns to Japan is the incredible (and compared to Australia) cheap food.

“Lucky enough, eating in Japan can be ridiculously cheap! Sushi, soba and udon are all affordable options. Basically, if you’re on a budget, there’s a bunch of cheap food chains that make pretty tasty food, for pretty cheap. And they often have a ticket machine at the front of the restaurant that will most likely have an English menu. Keep an eye out for Matsuya, Sukiya, Coco Curry, Yoshinoya and I’m sure there’s a stack of others that I’m forgetting!”

For those needing to feed an entire crew on an indie band wage, Hanamasa is an excellent budget supermarket. Typically geared towards the hospitality industry, the nationwide chain offers bulk packaged foods at wholesale prices. Beyond that, here’s a comprehensive guide to a whole stack of other cheap supermarkets in Tokyo (but found throughout Japan).

How to tour Japan

Getting around

Similarly to planning a regular vacation in Japan, all of the country’s most popular modes of transport have their varying pros and cons.

Low-budget crews may consider opting for overnight buses which will connect you from city to city for often the third of what you’d pay for a bullet train. But they’re only for the organized and those not too worried about giving up a little comfort.

For those with mid-range budgets and not too much gear, bullet trains can actually work really well. It’s something The Largerphones have done a few times now. The only issue being that if you do play a number of cities it can add up quickly, so look into the JR Pass (or read here for other rail pass options ).

A car or van is an option, and the renting in Japan can be relatively cheap. If you have an international driver’s licence and are confident behind the wheel it’s an option. Do be aware that although the country is small in terms of land mass and gas prices won’t be too much of a worry, high price toll roads in Japan are a ubiquitous, money hungry reality. To see whether you’ll have to pay a lot in terms of toll fares, plan out your route on Google Maps which will then offer an estimate.

Merch is the key to making a little extra money

You will be experienced and wise enough to know that the terms ‘DIY indie musician’ and ‘making money’ are definitely not synonymous. However one generally fail-safe method to make a little coin is by creating killer merch.

“The biggest way to make dollars in Japan is buy selling merch. There’s a big respect for merchandise in Japan and it’s one of the only places in the world where they still love to buy CDs! If you can get some t-shirts, tote bags, badges, pins or whatever made, seriously consider it.”

Wrapping up it’s time for the more serious stuff. It’s probably safest to preface this with a disclaimer : We’re not lawyers, and this is just a guide, so to avoid getting holed up at immigration, please check what you’ll need paperwork-wise depending on your situation .

If you want to do everything by the book (which you should) then it maybe be worth reaching out to an entertainment lawyer for a little advice. HG.org is a handy resource for that. If you’re looking at the longer term and want to make a career out of live music then be sure to spend some time dissecting this run down of the translated version of entertainment visa requirements in Japan .

As a band, touring Japan may seem like a lot of work and pre-planning and a lot of risk-juggling, but take it from The Lagerphones, it can also be one of the most rewarding and inspiring experiences any ambitious band can have (plus it’s pretty impressive on the bragging rights front).

So, what are you waiting for? Good luck and happy gigging!

TV - Thank You, Good Night: The Bon Jovi Story

After 4 decades in music and major vocal surgery, Jon Bon Jovi is optimistic and still rocking

When Jon Bon Jovi agreed to let director Gotham Chopra follow him with a documentary camera to delve into the history of his band, Bon Jovi, he didn't anticipate it would catch him at a major low point in his career.

The band was launching a tour, and despite doing all he could do to be vocally ready, the “Livin' on a Prayer” singer struggled through songs and couldn't hit the notes the way he used to.

Critics noticed and wrote about it. A review from Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minnesota, said: “It felt like he had forgotten how to sing.”

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Bon Jovi said the reaction at the time was “heartbreaking." After exhausting holistic options, he saw a doctor who said one of his vocal cords was atrophying.

“This was unique. It wasn't a nodule. The strong (vocal cord) was pushing the weak one around, and suddenly, my inabilities were just exacerbated," said Bon Jovi. He underwent major surgery and is still recovering.

“Every day is sort of like doing curls with weights and just getting them both to be the same size and to function together.”

This year has been a turning point. In February, he performed for an audience for the first time since his surgery at the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit gala where he was also named Person of The Year. The band's next album, “Forever” hits stores June 7, and its first single “Legendary” is out now. The four-part, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story," debuts Friday on Hulu.

In a Q&A, Bon Jovi talks about his voice, his famous hair, the music industry and his work ethic.

Answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: The work you put in behind-the-scenes is like a quarterback in between football games. Are you still rehearsing at that intensity, and how are you now?

BON JOVI: I’m doing great. The record was easy to do. The process has been steady. Would I like it to be a light switch? Yeah. I said to the doctor, 'I want to flip the switch and be done with this.’ It’s just not how it works. Like an athlete coming back from an ACL tear or whatever, it just takes time. The therapy is still intensive and yet I’m confident that it gets progressively better.

AP: We learn in the docuseries that your father was a barber. You've always been known for having good hair, especially in the 1980s. Does that come from your dad?

BON JOVI: Not in as much where he sat down and said, ‘I’ve got this idea.' Really, I was a byproduct of what was the '80s. Those were my baby pictures. I love laughing at them. Now, I can jokingly at least say, ‘After 40 years of a career, I still have all my hair.’ That is a good thing. Genetics works in my favor.

AP: Do you ever think about acting again?

BON JOVI: I do, on occasion. My day job then comes back to get in the way. In truth, I've got a big record coming out, and I’m hoping to go out on the road, so I don’t have time for it. And I respect the craft far too much to think I’m going to walk on a set and hit my marks and call that acting.

AP: Your work ethic stands out in “Thank You, Goodnight." We see in the early days you would sleep at the music studio. Where does that come from?

BON JOVI: If you’re not going to be great, the guy that’s coming in tomorrow night is going to be better. This isn’t a career that you should take lightly. There’s a million other young guys that are waiting to take your spot. And there are no guarantees in this business...You have to win hearts in order to win people's hard-earned dollar. If you’re asking them to stay with you for four decades, that’s a task. You better be one of the greats or else good luck.

AP: Richie Sambora is interviewed in the series. The fans love seeing him. Do you think you will ever perform together again?

BON JOVI: We never had a big falling out. He quit 10 years ago. It’s not that we’re not in contact or anything like that, but he was choosing to, as a single dad, raise his child. The door is always open if he wants to come up and sing a song. I mean, there’s many of them that we co-wrote together. That's a great part of both of our lives. There’s no animosity here.

AP: A lot of musicians are selling their music catalog. Would you?

BON JOVI: For some, it makes sense because they need to. For some, it makes sense because they want to. I just find (Bon Jovi's music) to be my baby, and I have no desire at this juncture in my life to ever even consider it.

AP: You're one of New Jersey's favorite sons like Bruce Springsteen. It's a point of pride for New Jersey residents that you're from there, but you moved to Florida?

BON JOVI: Part-time! My license is still New Jersey. I still vote in New Jersey.

AP: The music industry is such a singles market now. Did you ever consider just putting out some new songs and not an entire album?

BON JOVI: See, I’m the opposite. I can only put out an album. I do all I know how to do. I have to tell the complete story. It has to be the beginning, a middle and an end because that's who and what we are.

AP: How do you describe the new album?

BON JOVI: What comes through is joy. My goal with this record was to capture joy which for these last few years has been difficult, whether it’s the dark cloud of COVID that the world experienced or my own personal journey. With this record, I think we captured joy.

At the MFA, ‘Songs for Modern Japan’ is music for the eyes

I t’s still just April, so there will surely be exhibitions this year that sound more esoteric and limited in appeal than “Songs for Modern Japan: Popular Music and Graphic Design, 1900-1950.” There may also be shows that are more enjoyable and stimulating. It’s a safe bet that none will both seem so specialized while proving to be such a viewing treat.

“Songs for Modern Japan” is at the Museum of Fine Arts through Sept. 2. It was curated by the museum’s Anne Nishimura Morse.

The show consists of some 125 items, most of them sheet music covers (yes, sheet music covers), but there are also album sleeves, a lap steel guitar, a clip from the first feature-length Japanese sound film, from 1931 (“The Neighbor’s Wife and Mine,” sounds kind of screwball , doesn’t it?), a very large harmonica (7+ inches), some notably handsome ceramic pieces, a pair of silver origami cranes, and a slide show of a dozen images by the Japanese photographer Kageyama Koyo .

“Songs” is a show of polarities: sight and sound, East and West, past and present, tradition and innovation, artistry and commerce. Cross-fertilization is the order of the day, and that day implicitly precedes the five decades of the subtitle.

The flatness and solid colors of traditional Japanese prints did so much to influence — and liberate — Western artists in the late 19th century. The work of those artists in turn did so much to influence the Japanese artists responsible for these graphic designs. It’s an artistic case of wheels within wheels — or, if you prefer, frames within frames.

Few societies have changed as rapidly as Japan did during the second half of the 19th century, following its opening to the West. That change accelerated during the first half of the last century. The sheet music covers very much reflect that ongoing change. Above and beyond their very considerable aesthetic appeal, they’re a fascinating window on social, cultural, economic, even political history.

Nor was it just Japan that was radically changing during these years. So were the economics of music. For much of the first half of the last century, sales of sheet music were far more lucrative than sales of recordings. So these designs were anything but an afterthought. There’s a reason they’re so distinctive in appearance and skillfully executed. They were meant to sell the score: whether by evocation, association, or sheer visual appeal.

(Those same considerations, about the interplay of music-industry economics and visual salesmanship, carried over to subsequent years, when income from recording sales came to far exceed that from sheet music sales. What music lovers during the LP era don’t have albums in their collection that they bought because of the cover? It’s the same principle we see at work in “Songs.”)

Appropriately, such a diverse show has been organized diversely. By visual styles (Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernism), musical genres (marches, opera, children’s songs, dance music), politics (nationalism, the postwar US occupation), specific artists. Many of the covers are by artists uncredited then, and thus unknown now. But among the pleasures the show has to offer is appreciating the sensibilities of each of the three artists given his section: Saitō Kazō, Takehisa Yumeji, and Onchi Koshirō.

Saitō, in addition to his graphic work, designed the interiors for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel, in Tokyo. A Saitō cover for “Café Couple,” from 1930, incorporates text, radiating lines, drawing, and a photograph. It speaks to the artist’s dexterity that such a busy-sounding arrangement seems in no way busy in appearance.

In Yumeji’s 1924 design for sheet music from Verdi’s “La Traviata,” past and present, high and low, and East and West combine. It features the unmistakable image of Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp as well as that of his frequent costar Edna Purviance.

Chaplin and Purviance are among numerous Western references here. Think of their presence as proto-globalization. They include the Hollywood star Janet Gaynor, Christmas, martini glasses, a zeppelin (!), even a baseball player, though by the 1930s the sport had very much become a part of Japanese life.

Besides Verdi, Western composers with sheet music here include Sibelius, Meyerbeer, Brahms, and Rimsky-Korsakov. The figure on the cover for music from Bizet’s “Carmen” looks like a cross between a splash of blood (appropriate) and the Rising Sun emblem (differently appropriate). In a collision-of-cultures category all its own is the 1922 copy of some sheet music from a certain Puccini opera . Hint: It’s not “Tosca” or “La bohème.”

The influence of Western artists as diverse as Félix Vallotton, the Constructivists, and Cubists is in evidence. Sometimes what’s going on with a Western artist or style isn’t acknowledgment but anticipation. Yumeji’s design for Sibelius’s “Valse Triste,” from 1924, looks like a study for the cut-outs Henri Matisse would be making 20+ years later.

The anticipation can be less exalted, such as the phrase “That’s O.K.” looking very “Looney Tunes,” font-wise. Suzuki Shigeyoshi’s 1924 design for “The Empress” looks back, to Aubrey Beardsley, and ahead, to the Evil Queen in Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

There are traditional Japanese elements throughout: geishas, cherry blossoms, sake, a rather elongated Mount Fuji. While it’s fun to trace sources and influences, as well as the interplay of pictorial vocabularies and approaches, ultimately what matters most is good, effective design. Sometimes that can take the form of inspired playfulness, as with a 1930 cover laid out to look like the dustjacket of an open book. It can be something as simple as relying on the impact of solid colors, as with the black background and burgundy border of “Nagauta: The Tama River,” from 1926. Or it can be as involved as the use of multiple picture planes and an array of elements in “Those Gazing Eyes,” from 1931. The title refers to a character in a movie. It might just as well describe anyone lucky enough to see this show.

Note that on May 11 the museum will open five newly renovated galleries dedicated to its Japanese holdings. On display will be paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and prints. Don’t expect to find any musical scores, but that’s not a problem. “Songs for Modern Japan” has things there well covered.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

  • Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
  • It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
  • Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Insider Today

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

Related stories

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."
