Lab Group Drops 2023 Summer and Fall Tour Dates

Lab Group

After unveiling a new upcoming album, Lab Group 2 , Lab Group dropped the details on some stops so you can catch their latest tracks.

Lab Group continues to honor its legacy as a creative research group specializing in unified sound. After the passing of a core member, CharlestheFirst , fans wondered if it could be the end of an era. All were overjoyed when it was announced that Supertask and Potions of Lab Group were still planning to carry the torch and honor Charles by continuing the collaborative music. Beginning in 2022, the group began integrating Tiedye Ky , Player Dave , and Ruku as core songwriters and have been frivolously working on their forthcoming album Lab Group 2 .

It’s easy to see that the artists are about to burst with new content, and what better way to share their art than in a live setting? Today, Lab Group shared their upcoming tour dates for fans to have a chance to get their fill. There’s plenty of opportunity to absorb the impressive genius that comes from the group’s shared brainpower with stops all around the globe, including Secret Dreams , North Coast Music Festival , Rezz Rocks , and Hulaween , as well as an undisclosed location to be revealed at a later date.

The Lab Group 2 project includes a wide arrangement of features from producers, vocalists, and artists touching all different avenues of genres and mediums. To say it will be a memorable experience is putting it lightly.

Get a taste of the latest work Lab Group has been up to, and grab your tickets for a stop near you on their website while they last. Let us know on  Twitter  what you think the blurred-out stop might be and if you’ll be attending a stop on this tour!

LAB such an awesome cross - section of music that’s what makes LAB unique. I first heard them 2 years ago . From there they have just grown sooo much. I haven’t seen them in live concert yet. But I am working on that. At my age contemplating on which concert to go to like crowd wise and standing or sitting on the ground doesn’t work for me lol. But I’ll get there. Awesome that they are touring Australia for a couple of months. Might be easier to fly to the Gold Coast in May 21 to see them and have a holiday with family. Let’s hope there’s a trans-Tasman bubble in place with NZ-Australia otherwise have to wait until they head home to NZ.....

Well... wasn't long enough LMAO! Love love loved every single minute of it! Hearing them live was exactly what I expected. If I didn't have to work, I would have followed them around Australia lol #1 dedicated roady. I can't wait to see them again on their next one or even go back home if I have to!

ASHG

Realizing the benefits of human genetics and genomics research for people everywhere.

Hosting Lab Tours, a Step-By-Step Process

By Arvind Kothandaraman, member of the Public Education & Awareness Committee

Arvind Kothandaraman

Do you remember the first time you entered a genetics lab? It may have sparked your curiosity, raised questions, or even inspired you to pursue a career in human genetics research. While it is common for some ASHG members to spend time in the place where findings are made and breakthroughs occur, many outside the genetic community never see the inside of a science lab – the closest they get to a lab may be reading about new discoveries or seeing a scientist in a movie hold up a test tube as they peer through goggles. By hosting lab tours, relationships are created with local communities and understanding of science becomes more accessible. Public Education & Awareness Committee member Arvind Kothandaraman has hosted many tours through his career. He spoke with ASHG to create a guide to host a lab tour.

Getting Started

Hosting a lab tour may be something you’re interested in pursuing, but what’s the first step? Start by reaching out to your own contacts or local schools. Many school websites provide contact information for teachers, department heads, or general administrators. Once a connection is made with even one person, a network is created. Similarly, evaluate your own network. Perhaps your child’s teacher is interested in setting up a tour. Trust and reliability are key to establishing a long-lasting outreach relationship – offering yourself as a resource to supplement someone’s learning sets the foundation for these key components.

With either a new or existing contact, include all information that could help their decision of whether to set up a tour. Some considerations include:

  • Tour itinerary and duration
  • Any hands-on aspects the group will be able to participate in
  • People that the group may have the opportunity to meet while on the tour
  • Take-home resources
  • Your willingness to provide additional resources, such as classroom activities or time to set up discussions about career or higher education advice if students are interested in pursuing this further

Considerations and Collaborations

Each lab is different, as are your capabilities as a host. Perhaps certain times of the year allow you more opportunities to host. October may be a difficult month to host due to the ASHG Annual Meeting ! When evaluating how you will conduct your tour, consider the groups you feel would be most capable of hosting in your lab. Do you have experience working with high school students but not elementary school students? Or do you want to host a tour with people who have various expertise? This may be an opportunity to collaborate with a colleague or another ASHG member. The GENE Network provides you with a network of ASHG members looking to connect with the education and engagement community. This includes fellow members looking to expand their engagement network. Search by location, audience level, and area of interest to find a fellow ASHG member with whom you can collaborate.

Keeping the Group Focused

As with any group setting, it is important to have strategies on hand to keep everyone focused. Keeping everyone thinking, engaged, and curious leads to an enjoyable experience for all. Assigning deliverables to students helps them focus during the tour. Have a few research questions in mind that you are grappling with. Share these questions with students ahead of or during the tour and brainstorm ways to answer the question. Eye opening suggestions can come from unexpected angles!

Post-Tour Activities

Turn a tour into a larger project. Once your time with a group has concluded, encourage them to create group artwork or even a simple list that captures what they took away from the tour. This could revolve around the lab’s set up, people, or other notable things. Not only does this help students retain information, but it can also be a gift for the host – a seemingly simple gesture can turn out to be a prized possession to the receiver.

Welcome to OpenGVLab! 👋

We are a research group from Shanghai AI Lab focused on Vision-Centric AI research. The GV in our name, OpenGVLab, means general vision, a general understanding of vision, so little effort is needed to adapt to new vision-based tasks.

We develop model architecture and release pre-trained foundation models to the community to motivate further research in this area. We have made promising progress in general vision AI, with 109 SOTA 🚀. In 2022, our open-sourced foundation model 65.5 mAP on the COCO object detection benchmark, 91.1% Top1 accuracy in Kinetics 400, achieved landmarks for AI vision👀 tasks for image🖼️ and video📹 understanding.

Based on solid vision foundations, we have expanded to Multi-Modality models and Generative AI(partner with Vchitect ). We aim to empower individuals and businesses by offering a higher starting point for developing vision-based AI products and lessening the burden of building an AI model from scratch.

“They Benefited From BTS” — Min Hee Jin Accused Of Hypocrisy After Criticizing ILLIT Allegedly Capitalizing On NewJeans

tour lab group

Recent developments in the K-Pop industry have intensified scrutiny over ADOR ‘s Min Hee Jin after she accused HYBE and its subsidiary BeLift Lab of undermining her group, NewJeans , with their newly debuted girl group, ILLIT . Min claimed that ILLIT’s branding and concept bore a striking resemblance to NewJeans, an allegation she described as a deliberate effort by HYBE to replicate her group’s success.

newjeans

In an exclusive interview with Hankyung on April 22, 2024, Min expressed concerns that HYBE’s actions were threatening the unique identity and brand value of NewJeans. She alleged that the similarity between the two groups was not a coincidence but a strategy by HYBE, motivated by profit. According to Min, ADOR has made multiple attempts to address these concerns with BeLift Lab but to no avail.

min hee jin 1

In her statement, Min Hee Jin even says, “ADOR does not want ILLIT and NewJeans to be linked in any way at all. We have no intention of allowing anyone to promote themselves using phrases like ‘NewJeans’ dongsaeng group,’ just because the groups debuted under the HYBE umbrella.”

illit teaser

However, this stance has led to charges of hypocrisy from Korean netizens, who claimed that NewJeans themselves were initially marketed as “ BTS ‘s sister group,” a tactic employed by HYBE to boost their visibility. Headlines from the time of NewJeans’ debut and their participation in BTS’s “Permission to Dance” music video were cited as evidence of HYBE’s typical promotional strategies that benefit new artists on a viral post on theqoo .

Netizens argue that Min Hee Jin is now criticizing the very practices that helped establish NewJeans. They claim that leveraging the fame of established groups like BTS to introduce new artists is a common and effective strategy in K-Pop, one that ADOR itself has utilized.

  • “But overseas, junior groups from the same agency totally benefit from the spillover effect.”
  • “This is really unprecedented, utterly shameless.”
  • “Send the investors off with nothing.”
  • “It’s the epitome of hypocrisy. They promoted the trainee group as BTS’s little sister group, even having them appear in a BTS music video.”
  • “The hypocrisy is severe. And what does that have to do with the breach of trust?”
  • “With NewJeans’ comeback right around the corner, the agency is being incredibly reckless.”
  • “Wasn’t the idea from the start to benefit from the spillover effect with the music video?”
  • “They even appeared in a BTS video…”

Screenshot_20240422_185032_Chrome

  • “How many ‘younger siblings’ does BTS have? I remember laughing about it. It’s just ridiculous.”
  • “Not to hype up HYBE or anything, but BTS’s impact definitely seems bigger than NewJeans’ impact.”
  • “Aren’t they the only junior idol group that appeared in a BTS music video?”
  • “I wouldn’t have watched any of their music videos at all, had I not been a fan of HYBE artists.”
  • “If you’ve benefited yourself, it only makes sense to promote future junior groups in the same way, right?”
  • “Haha.”
  • “Oh, gosh… I’d use the f*ck out of their names, too, though…”
  • “What about being BTS’s little sister group???”

California Governor Newsom launches abortion travel ban ad campaign in Alabama

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:41 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at states considering abortion travel bans with the launch of a new ad campaign.

Newsom's Campaign for Democracy ad is set to air in Alabama starting Monday. The governor tweeted out the ad in a social media post Sunday morning.

Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this. pic.twitter.com/gHbYJYlEXk — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) April 21, 2024

The text with the video post reads, "Alabama's abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women's travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this."

The 30-second commercial shows two nervous young women driving in a car passing a sign that reads "State Line 1 Mile."

"We're almost there. You're gonna make it," the passenger tells the woman behind the wheel just before they hear a siren and are pulled over by a state trooper.

"Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care," a voiceover says as the state trooper walks up to the car.

"Miss, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test," the trooper says, waving a test stick in one hand. The next shot shows the driver leaning on the hood of her car as the trooper puts her in handcuffs.

"Stop them by taking action at RightToTravel.org ," the voiceover intones as the ad ends.

Alabama is currently weighing a bill that would make it a crime to help women travel outside the state in order to receive an abortion. The ad is part of a larger effort to combat travel bans across the United States. Newsom was behind a similar ad that ran in Tennessee.

The RightToTravel.org website says that those two states and Oklahoma are considering bills that ban minors from traveling out of state to get an abortion without parental consent, even if it's a case of incest or if there is abuse in the family.

It isn't the first action the governor has taken in the political battle over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. Two days after the ruling, Newsom partnered with the governors of Oregon and Washington to issue a multi-state commitment promising to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.

In September of that year, he launched a billboard campaign in seven of the most restrictive anti-abortion states urging women seeking the procedure to come to California for treatment. He also signed more than a dozen new abortion laws  protecting women's reproductive rights and ordered the state to end its contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant  indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states .

15 injured in tram accident at Universal Studios

A group of amusement park visitors were injured Saturday evening in a Universal Studios tram accident near Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. PT Saturday and transferred 15 patients to hospitals with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol said a tour was underway at the studio in Universal City and the tram was making a turn following the "Jurassic Park Cars" attraction.

"Due to unknown reasons, while negotiating the turn onto Avenue M, the last car of the tram collided with a metal guardrail on the right side of the roadway causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram," the agency said.

The injuries were evaluated as "minor to moderate," the highway patrol said. Neither drugs nor alcohol are being considered as factors.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood confirmed the accident in a statement and said a tram collided with a guard rail while it was turning left.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," the statement said. "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority."

Universal said the Studio Tour has resumed "with a modified route" and the park is "reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."

Universal Studios is owned by NBC News’ parent company, NBCUniversal.

According to the park’s website, the tram tour is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary Friday.

The Universal Studios Tour offers park visitors a chance to ride a tram through behind-the-scenes locations of some of the studio's famed films while tour guides impart some of the history of the lot.

Many of the locations are still used for filming, so the locations may change. A consistently popular attraction includes re-creations of scenes such as a "Jaws"-style shark attack.

Driving through his untamed patch of ranchland near Benbrook Lake, John Wood can’t help but think of the possibilities — not just for these 20 acres, but for all of Tarrant County.

Much has changed since Wood grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Texas Christian University in 2008. While many of those changes have been for the better, Wood said, rising temperatures and disappearing green space have deprived kids of the chance to spend time outside and learn how to grow their own food.

“We all grew up playing outside, and I feel like that seems like it’s closed to this generation,” Wood said. “It would be a victory if we could create a place where kids can come and play and eat and learn how to do that on their own.”

To fulfill that vision, the attorney and author has enlisted the help of TCU classmates and community members to reimagine the mission of his nonprofit organization, Econautics . Wood founded the organization in 2012 with the goal of promoting sustainability in business through research, training and advising.

Celebrate Earth Day

Each year on April 22, millions of Americans celebrate Earth Day and demonstrate support for the environment through cleanups, educational seminars and other happenings. Events in Tarrant County include an April 21 pre-Earth Day celebration at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, the April 22 opening of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge boardwalk expansion, and an April 28 Earth Day Market at Martin House Brewing . Search for more events here .

While the nonprofit’s values remain the same, Wood said its focus has shifted to building a “living lab,” where residents can demonstrate how to sustainably grow food without the use of petrochemical fertilizers or pesticides. Sustainable agriculture refers to a set of practices that promote soil health, minimize water use and lower pollution on farms.

With new leadership at the helm, including chief executive officer Talia McAllister and chief operating officer Katey Rudd, Econautics is exploring options for acquiring land in east Fort Worth, Aledo and the Granbury area. Wood’s Crowley property won’t house the demonstration farm but could be used as a food production site, he said.

The group’s goal is not to replicate the urban farming efforts flourishing in other parts of Tarrant County, McAllister said.

“There are people doing really amazing work with urban farming right now, but the resources are pretty limited and oftentimes they are really, really dependent on volunteers,” McAllister said. “A big thing that we’re working on this year is making relationships, meeting new partners and inviting them to tell us: ‘What have your challenges been? What areas do you wish you could address but you can’t?’”

What are examples of sustainable agriculture?

The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program at University of California Davis offers these examples :

  • Improving water conservation and storage measures
  • Selecting drought-tolerant crop species
  • Reducing reliance on nonrenewable fuel sources
  • Incorporating crop residue into soil to reduce air pollution

McAllister and Rudd have deep roots in the food bank world, with McAllister previously working at the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas and Rudd currently serving as community impact manager for the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Both knew Wood from their days as TCU undergraduates. Rudd and Wood cited the late professor Tony Burgess as an inspiration for their dedication to environmental policy and food insecurity. After graduating, Rudd was struggling in her job at the food bank and Burgess let her attend his classes for free, she said.

“He was like: This is your student loan. Are you promising to be a teacher for the rest of your life and promising to do this work for the rest of your life?” Rudd said. “That’s the price of this, that you will commit to doing that.”

The desire to pay it forward brought Rudd together with Wood, who posted on Facebook about his efforts to build an indoor farm, farmers market and kitchen inside a Beaumont warehouse .

While the project didn’t get off the ground, Wood understood that people would raise their hands to join his mission if he talked less about agriculture markets and more about who would directly benefit from sustainable farming.

“No one was going to jump on board when I said, ‘We should change the market conditions.’ It was: ‘We need to feed kids,’” Wood said. “The more concrete it became, the more interest and traction there was. That’s when it got to the point where we decided we needed to control a piece of land and start building programs around it.”

One program will likely focus on vocational training at their future farm site. Rudd’s food bank colleagues want to launch a vocational training program in urban agriculture for high schoolers and veterans, but they don’t currently have funding to do so, she said. Econautics could step in to offer job training or create a business — known in the business world as a “social venture” — to fund a similar program.

“We could fill in that gap with someone who’s already doing a lot of the same work that we’re talking about,” Rudd said.

Econautics is still in the early days of its regeneration. McAllister started her role in January, and the organization elected a new board of directors this month. The group aims to host a kickoff event, complete with a vendor market and concert, this summer.

With a background in nonprofit grant writing, McAllister knows there’s a long path ahead. She is excited to make structural changes to help improve public health as opposed to “putting a Band-Aid” on one part of the system. Every child should have the right to grow up with breathable air and soil that produces nutritious foods, she said.

“The more that we can do to partner with organizations that have that same mentality, the better,” McAllister said. “Let’s listen to what people need. Let’s go in and try to create a comprehensive system around them of support so we can potentially help them get jobs, help them improve their economic situation.”
