Road King Classic: which tour pak should I get?

I have an 06 RKC and want to have a detachable tour pak for long distance trips. I don't like the look of the smaller leather tour pak and I want more space. I like the Premium Leather Tour Pak because it seems to match the leather theme of the classic. My concern though is 1) I haven't seen one on a RKC so I don't know what it looks like together, 2) there seems to be a clearance problem when opening the saddle bags. Or, should I put an Ultra Tour Pak on? Not sure mixing the leather with the hard case is a good look though. If someone has experience with this I would love some feedback. Pix would be great too. One of the things I love about the RK is that I can take things off or put them on according to my needs. So the bike always looks different. Thanks. Dave

A friend put on the tour pack for a ultra on his RKC, looks ok, he also put on the lower fairings, all painted the same as his bike, he does have a problem with opening the sadle bags all the way. They open about 70% and he does complain that they don't open all the way.  

tell your friend he can mount spacers on the mounting portion of tour pack to give extra room, and to the op i would do leather bc it matches your bags  

Why worry too much about it matching? (OK, OK same paint) Get the biggest one you can fit.(King) Like you say, It's only for trips and it is detachable.  

Those are all great points. Thanks. Bigger is better when it comes to storage right? I'm leaning toward the Premier Leather Tour Pak, the big one. It would look hot too.  

....... what about the leather TP that came on the '07 CVO's ? Is that the same as the 'Premium Leather' ? I see'm on Ebay every now&then.

• Comes pre assembled. Holes for back pad are pre drilled for installation.

• Compatible with OEM Harley Detachable Two-Up and Solo mounting racks.
• Select Detachable Two-Up and Solo mounting racks and applicable Docking hardware is required.

tour pak on road king

I have some new found friends that have been told by our local HD shop that their 96 Road King will not accept a tour pak. Is this correct?? They were told because something changed on the 96 year bike, it is not applicable. Sounds fishy to me. Alan  

My 01 has a tourpak. The first year of FLHR was 94 or 96??? Do you mean 96" engine, which came out in 07, but they changed the frame in 09. Look in the catalogue. It will have years listed.

the 94-96 has a shorter frame than the later models. they will accept tour pacs though. in fact i sold my last tour pac to my buddy that had a 96. it used the same detachable mount and the same hardware as my 98 did. head  

When the frame was shortened, are we talking inches?? How many?? Assumably, it would just be the struts for the fender and swingarm for the rear tire (because the engine and trans still need the same room to be mounted in the frame?). IF this is the case, and the detachable mount goes in the same place, then the distance between driver and passenger will be shortened the same amount the frame was shortened. So then, large people would have a cramped space, but small folks would be ok to install the tour pak. Can anybody chime in here and confirm or disagree with this line of logic. Alan  

i can say this. when my 98 was new and with stock handlebars, you had to slump over to get to the bars. i'm 6 ft. on the 94-96 with the same bars, they feel pretty good. i'm not sure exactly where the frame is a little shorter exactly though. head  

1996 with tour pack I own a 1996 Road King and it has a detachable King Tour Pack. BK

Anything is possible these days. I saw a Big Dog chopper with hard bags and a tour pack recently.
