Tourism has massively increased in recent decades. Aviation has opened up travel from domestic to international. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of international visits had more than doubled since 2000.

Tourism can be important for both the travelers and the people in the countries they visit.

For visitors, traveling can increase their understanding of and appreciation for people in other countries and their cultures.

And in many countries, many people rely on tourism for their income. In some, it is one of the largest industries.

But tourism also has externalities: it contributes to global carbon emissions and can encroach on local environments and cultures.

On this page, you can find data and visualizations on the history and current state of tourism across the world.

MONTHLY INSIGHTS March 04, 2024

tourism database

U.S. Travel has temporarily paused our monthly data newsletter, however, the latest travel data is still available via the U.S. Travel Insights Dashboard . This dashboard is updated each month (member login required).

The U.S. Travel Insights Dashboard , developed in collaboration with Tourism Economics, is supported by more than 20 data sources. The dashboard is the most comprehensive and centralized source for high-frequency intelligence on the U.S. travel industry, tracking industry performance, travel volumes and predictive indicators of recovery including air and lodging forecasts, DMO website traffic, convention and group trends, travel spending and losses, traveler sentiment, among others to measure the health of the industry.

Key Highlights January 2024:

  • Travel appetite started the year on a softer note, but overall growth continued. Air passenger growth remained positive, up 6% versus the prior year but lower than the double-digit growth seen through 2023. Foreign visits remained strong, up 24% YoY.
  • Hotel room demand continued a trend of slight contraction falling 1% versus the prior year, while short-term rental demand grew 1%, a lower rate than 2023.
  • A particular bright spot was that group room demand within the top 25 markets displayed solid growth of 9% relative to the prior year.
  • The outlook for the economy remains fairly optimistic due to the strength of the labor market, looser financial conditions and healthy household and nonfinancial corporate balance sheets. This has filtered through to slightly higher consumer sentiment in February.
  • Sentiment is also growing for upcoming leisure travel in 2024. The share of travelers reporting having travel plans within the next six months increased to 93% in January from 92% in December, according to Longwoods International’s monthly survey.
  • Travel price inflation (TPI) fell slightly in January as a result of falling transportation prices. Sticky services inflation should see relief from decelerating wage growth. However, upside risks stem from rising healthcare costs, supply chain disruptions and slowing labor supply. Source: U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics

The digital revolution has brought about profound changes in research within the tourism segmentation field. The ease of grasping tourists’ behaviors is facilitated by the digital traces left on social networks. Existing studies focusing on tourists’ digital traces typically apply clustering algorithms to the tourism context. This paper introduces a novel measure, named tourism profile measure for determining tourism segmentation, also known as tourism profiling. The approach involves establishing a new clustering algorithm that centers on stays conducted by tourists, utilizing both the context and content of the trips. The proposed measure is then simulated and experimentally evaluated using a real dataset across various periods and diverse nationalities, particularly in the context of the French capital, Paris.

Surge in Adventure Tourism: Four Big Trends in 2024

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 17th, 2024 at 12:00 PM EDT

New data shows that experiences are the leading factor when choosing a destination.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

The latest consumer spending data from GetYourGuide reveals a surge in demand for unique travel experiences and activities that align with personal passions.

The report analyzes booking data from millions of travelers and highlights a significant shift in travel priorities. Here are the key takeaways:

Experiences Rule

Travelers are prioritizing experiences over traditional sightseeing. Nearly all travelers (90%) plan to spend the same or more on activities in 2024, and experiences are now the leading factor when choosing a destination (reported by 98% of travelers).

Passion Drives Destinations

The hottest travel destinations are no longer just about iconic landmarks. Cities like Fajardo, Puerto Rico (up 419% in bookings by American travelers) and Hoi An, Vietnam (up 284% globally) are experiencing a boom, likely due to their unique cultural offerings and adventure opportunities.

Globally Inspired

Travelers are venturing beyond the usual suspects. This year’s top trending tours include the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, kayaking through El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico, and even a hot air balloon ride over Interlaken, Switzerland.

The Rise of the Explorer

GetYourGuide identifies a new breed of traveler – the “Explorer” – who spends more on experiences, takes longer trips, and travels more frequently. These high-value vacationers are fueling the experience economy.

New data details impact of tourism in western UP

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC)—New data is shedding light on the tourism industry’s importance in the western U.P.

A year-long economic impact study was presented Wednesday morning to local businesses and leaders. A survey led by the University of Michigan’s Economic Growth Institute detailed what the western U.P. sees tourism-wise in a typical year.

Some of the key findings were that most tourism occurs between June and September, and the median stay is four days on average. Economic Growth Institute Director of Research Sarah Crane said these findings were discovered by self-reported data during the year.

“In our report, we highlight a couple of different things. One is a really comprehensive overview of tourism patterns in the area. So this is the first time this type of data collection has ever been done in this area. The second thing that we do is look at the economic impact of this tourism spending in the region,” Crane said.

In the span of the year, the survey discovered that around $350 million went towards tourism in the regions of Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. Through state and federal grants, the Western U.P. Planning and Development Region was able to fund the project.

Regional planner Lisa McKenzie said this kind of specific data is vital to the region.

“We felt that it was important to have this study completed so that we could look at our infrastructure. Perhaps do some granting agencies and look at ways to improve the experience within the Keweenaw and the entire Western U.P.,” McKenzie said.

Crane said the findings were unique because the majority of the tourism went towards the natural aspects of the region like skiing and snowboarding in the winter and hiking in the summer.

“This data can really inform local leaders in a unique way because it’s so localized and this has never been done before. So with that local data, it can help inform how investments are made, what the role of tourism is in the area, and what the potential future can be,” Crane said.

Crane said she hopes this data helps locals better understand how to curtail tourists and allow for more growth in the area.

How to plan a solo female trip to milan, italy.

Milan is a wonderful destination for solo female travel in Italy.

Based on post-pandemic tourism data compiled by Italy’s tourist board , planning vacations to the the beloved Mediterranean country has never been more popular. While cities like Rome and Venice will always remain bucket list destinations, what should you do if you’re a solo female traveler looking for an Italian city that’s less crowded, safe, and just as beguiling?

Consider Milan. Italy's second-largest city has long been dismissed as the country’s design and fashion capital, but in reality, there’s far more to Milan’s appeal than Salone del Mobile and Miuccia Prada. From historic attractions to fantastic food, the city is an underrated gem. Plus, getting around is a breeze thanks to inexpensive public transportation, including Milano Centrale—which has several hundred domestic trains departing daily so you can see more of Italy.

Here, a handy guide on how to plan a safe and unforgettable solo female trip to Milan.

Where to Stay

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife pays homage to the church it occupies, 1934's Chiesa del Cristo ... [+] Re.

Anchored by three architectural masterpieces from Zaha Hadid Architects, Daniel Libeskind, and Arata Isozaki, CityLife is a mixed-use development that’s home to stylish shops, enticing restaurants, and as of 2022, one of Milan’s buzziest new hotels, Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife . Spread across two structures including Chiesa del Cristo Re, a 1934 neoclassical-style church, the 185-key hotel offers a stay that’s removed enough from Milan’s city center to ensure peace and quiet, but close enough to access by foot.

Apple Watch Series 9 Hits All Time Low Special Offer Price

The first unintended consequence of ai – and it’s huge, israel s attack on iran doesn t look unprecedented.

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife's exterior lounge and reception area

The gleaming all-white structure’s original facade, arches, and soaring columns were carefully restored to nod to Chiesa del Cristo Re’s previous life. The design ethos flows indoors to the main lobby, where seven-meter-high bronze elements resembling organ pumps make the mundane act of checking in a grand one.

However, religion isn’t the only source of inspiration for Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife. The city’s fashion legacy is woven into the property’s signature restaurant and lounge Tailors. Lovely for an aperitivo—which in true Italian style arrive with salty nibbles like Taralli and potato chips—a sophisticated dinner of housemade duck ragu paccheri drizzled with a Vacche Rosse Parmigiano Reggiano bechamel, or the daily breakfast spread, Tailors celebrates craftsmanship in the kitchen. When the weather warms up, zip up to the roof, where one of only two hotel rooftop pools in Milan and chic al fresco bar await.

NH Collection Milano Citylife has ten duplex suites outfitted with private terraces and hot tubs.

Though the guest rooms skew snug (as do many European hotels), they’re smartly laid out. On top of that: the low-slung beds are dreamy; the branded NH bathroom amenities incorporate sustainable packaging and formulas; and the ceiling-to-floor windows bathe the space in natural light for a more open feel. In the mood to splurge? Then reserve one of the hotel’s ten duplex suites . Cloaked in calming earth tones, they sport one-of-a-kind configurations and come with private terraces and hot tubs.

Federico Vaccari leads personalized tours of his hometown Milan in a beautiful restored vintage ... [+] Fiat 500.

If you’ve been to Milan before, and want to discover a lesser-known side of the city, book a private tour with Federico Vaccari . Over the course of three hours, Vaccari will scoot you around in a beautiful restored vintage Fiat 500 and reveal spots travelers rarely get to see, like Via Abramo Lincoln’s candy-colored houses. Since the car can only hold two passengers, it’s especially well-suited for solo female travelers.

For first-timers: no visit would be complete without seeing the Duomo, Milan's most famous cathedral, and enjoying expansive city views from the rooftop. Teatro alla Scala and Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of Leonardo Da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting, are other cultural landmarks worth scoping out. For retail therapy, head to Milan’s legendary fashion district Milan's Quadrilatero and Via della Spiga. Reserved for pedestrians, this glamorous strip showcases Italy’s biggest fashion houses such as Prada and Moschino. (Bring your passport to enjoy tax-free shopping.)

Where to Eat

Panzerotti is one of Milan's most popular snacks.

Despite being frequently overshadowed by Naples, Rome, and Bologna, Milan is a worthy dining destination in its own right. As of 2023, it’s home to 17 Michelin-starred restaurants like Rome, which run the gamut from Enrico Bartolini ’s innovating tasting menus to IYO , where modern Japanese fare with European flourishes take center stage.

Bice remains a city stalwart for classic Tuscan fare (Ossobuco alla Milanese, Ribollita) and Federico Delrosso’s timeless design, while Peck has attracted discriminating palates since 1883 with an extensive (and immaculately presented) selection of gourmet meats, prepared foods, cheese, sweets, and wines. Ciacco turns out high-quality, small-batch gelato in classic and experimental flavors like the Robiola-infused “Almost Cheesecake.” For a quick bite to go, Panzo has you covered with made-to-order panzerotti, a traditional Puglian snack of fried dough stuffed with melty cheese and tomatoes.

Sharp drop in number of Indian tourists to Maldives in 2024 after diplomatic row

  • Indian tourists to Maldives drop 38% in Q1 2024
  • Indian tourists to Maldives peaked at 2.91 lakh in 2021
  • Drop comes amid 'India Out' campaign, 'Boycott Maldives' trends

Fewer Indians travelled to the Maldives in the first three months of this year, data has revealed. The drop in the number of Indian tourists visiting the Indian Ocean nation comes against the backdrop of a diplomatic row between Delhi and Male.

According to tourism statistics from Maldivian authorities, a total of 34,847 Indians visited the Maldives between January to March this year. This was a sharp 38 per cent drop from last year when more than 56,000 tourists visited the Maldives during the same period.

A total of 12,792 Indians (7.1 per cent of the total population) visited the island nation in January 2024, the statistics revealed.

In February, a total of 11,522 Indian tourists visited the Maldives, as compared to a total of 19,497 the same month last year.

In March this year, only 8,322 Indians visited the nation, as compared to a total of 18,099 during the same month in 2023.

The data comes following an 'India Out' campaign by Maldivian president Mohamed Muizzu and the subsequent 'Boycott Maldives' trend that gained popularity on social media in India.

Later, the 'Visit Lakshadweep' trend gained popularity on the internet after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Lakshadweep islands.

The data also shows a steady rise in Indians visiting the island nation in recent years. According to the data, 1 lakh Indians visited the Maldives in 2018. The number increased to 1.6 lakh in 2019.

In 2021, the number of Indian tourists to the Maldives increased to 2.91 lakh, as the country eased its Covid-19 restrictions.

The recent diplomatic row between India and the Maldives erupted after three deputy ministers of the Maldives posted derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, folllowing the latter's visit to Lakshadweep .
