The Perfect St. Thomas USVI One Week Itinerary: What to See, Do and Eat

08/03/2021 by Guest Blogger 4 Comments

This guest post is written by Theresa McKinney, a USVI enthusiast and travel blogger:

St. Thomas is a Caribbean paradise in the Lesser Antilles, and the most densely populated of the US Virgin Islands. If you wish to visit this island, you won’t be alone; it has one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. That said, a trip to St. Thomas USVI offers the chance to swim in clear, turquoise waters and take in amazing views from its lush peaks.

Americans especially love visiting St. Thomas due to its convenience. As the US Virgin Islands are an American territory, no passport is required upon entry or return from the islands. Additionally, many major US cities offer direct flights to St. Thomas, which makes it even more of an obvious choice for a tropical escape.

If a trip to this mountainous island is calling your name, below you’ll find the perfect itinerary for one week in St. Thomas USVI. Whether you seek lazy beach days, time exploring nature, or adventurous day trips, it’s all covered!

Table of Contents

How to Spend One Week in St. Thomas USVI

Flamboyant trees in bloom during summer in St Thomas USVI

Day 1: Arrival & Drake’s Seat

Arrive at cyril e. king international airport.

Your first day in St. Thomas will begin with your arrival into Cyril E. King International Airport. The best flights arrive sometime in the afternoon, between noon and 4pm.

You can then grab your rental car right at the airport. While taxis are available on St. Thomas, it is far easier to properly explore this island with your own wheels.

Depending on where you stay, a 4×4 Jeep may be required to reach your lodging. The vacation rentals with the best views sometimes involve steep climbs up unpaved driveways. Double check the property’s listing or ask the owner to be sure.

If you don’t want to rent a car, grab a taxi from the stand right outside the airport. There is no Uber or Lyft in the US Virgin Islands.

Once you’ve left the airport, head to your lodging to drop off your luggage and get your bearings. St. Thomas is a very developed island, and there are a myriad of both hotel and vacation rental options to choose from.

Depending on when you arrive into St. Thomas, you might not have time to do much besides grab groceries and dinner on your first night. However, one thing you can easily squeeze into your first evening is a drive up to Drake’s Seat.

This necessitates driving up some hilly roads to reach this high perch, but the sweeping views over Magens Bay are totally worth it. This is the perfect intro to one of St. Thomas’s best beaches before heading there on your first morning.

Day 2: Magens Bay & Charlotte Amalie Overlook

Day two of your St. Thomas USVI vacation will begin at pristine Magens Bay. This is arguably St. Thomas’s most stunning beach, although large cruise ship crowds sometimes take away from the scenery. St. Thomas can have as many as six cruise ships at port simultaneously, and it’s possible to see thousands of people enjoying Magens Bay at one time.

View of turquoise water and boats looking out to Magens Bay

To beat the crowds, it is best to visit St. Thomas outside of peak season, which runs December through May. You could also arrive at Magens Bay first thing in the morning. This will give you the chance to pick the perfect beach spot and experience some solitude before the worst crowds arrive.

That said, there’s a reason why crowds flock to gorgeous Magens Bay. The water is calm as could be, and is perfect for utilizing the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards that are available for rent on site. Magens Bay is also long and perfect for leisurely strolls, and has the added bonus of a bar and grill for food and drink purchases.

There is a $5 fee to enter Magens Bay , as well as an additional $2 fee to park a vehicle.

Charlotte Amalie Overlook

View from Charlotte Amalie overlook in St Thomas USVI

When you’ve had enough sun or if the crowds become too much, hit the road again for a change of scenery. One of the most popular photo spots on St. Thomas is the Charlotte Amalie Overlook, and it is only an eight-minute drive from Magens Bay.

From this point, you can see the whole of Charlotte Amalie, as well as cruise ships docked at the Havensight and Crown Bay ports. A tad further out to sea, you can also view the green hills of Water Island and Hassel Island.

Day 3: Cas Cay & Duffy’s Love Shack

Virgin Islands Eco Tours is one of the most reputable tour companies on St. Thomas and neighboring St. John. One popular tour option is the kayak, hike, and snorkel tour out to Cas Cay .

There are both full and half day tours available. The full day tour includes lunch, and the half day tour is an abridged version of the full day. Both experiences include kayaking through mangroves, hiking a deserted island to a blowhole, and snorkeling in crystal clear waters.

Duffy’s Love Shack

Exterior of Duffy's Love Shack situated in a parking lot

As Cas Cay tours run all morning, your next stop could be either lunch or dinner. A five-minute drive to Duffy’s Love Shack in Red Hook will satisfy either of those needs.

This laid back “bar that serves great food” has a unique location in the middle of a parking lot, and is a St. Thomas staple. Some of the best menu items are fish or jerk chicken tacos with a side of fried plantains, as well as the blue cheese and bacon burger.

If you’re craving a cocktail, Duffy’s serves drinks like frozen bushwackers in fun souvenir glasses shaped like mermaids, pirates, sharks, etc.

Day 4: Sapphire Bay & Sunset Grille

Sapphire bay.

girl looking out towards sunrise from Sapphire Bay

Although Sapphire Bay is located on a resort property, it is one of the most beautiful beaches on St. Thomas. The water ranges from shades of sapphire to bright turquoise, and there are gorgeous views of St. John to the east. Sapphire Bay is truly magnificent during sunrise, when you can watch the orange glow of the sun appear from behind St. John.

It may be difficult to rise early enough to watch the sunrise at Sapphire Bay, but it’s still a great beach to visit later in the day. You can lounge in a beach chair, go snorkeling, or rent a kayak or SUP to get out on the water. There is also an open air beach bar right on the sand with casual menu items like tacos and surprisingly good fries.

Sunset Grille at Secret Harbour

Sunset during dinner at Sunset Grille

One of the best things to do in St. Thomas is enjoy a lovely meal on the water during golden hour. For a dinner to remember, book a reservation at Sunset Grille for a little before sunset. Located in Secret Harbour, this upscale restaurant is steps away from a pretty white sand beach that itself is worthy of a visit.

The menu is top notch, with bright and delicious appetizers like jalapeno tempura octopus and entrée items like crispy whole snapper and miso Chilean sea bass. Your experience hits a whole new level when you consume this deliciousness as the sun sets before you.

Day 5: Ferry from St. Thomas to St. John USVI

View of Cruz Bay from Lind Point Trail

With St. Thomas and St. John being just a twenty-minute ferry ride apart, it would be remiss not to visit St. John at least once during your stay. This sister island is St. Thomas’s smaller and less developed counterpart. A visit to each really completes a USVI vacation.

From St. Thomas, most car rental companies will let you take your vehicle to St. John, but you could also opt for the traditional passenger ferry . Once in Cruz Bay on St. John, it will be very easy to grab a taxi.

From there, you can choose among various experiences in Virgin Islands National Park , like visiting the magnificent North Shore beaches or hiking the Reef Bay Trail. When you’re done you can grab food in Cruz Bay before catching the ferry back to St. Thomas.

Day 6: Smith Bay & Dinner in Red Hook

Smith Bay is another great beach to visit during a trip to St. Thomas USVI (aka Lindquist Beach). This beach doesn’t feel as remote as Magens Bay, with a large resort visible from the beach. However, it doesn’t get near the crowds that Magens draws.

All along the crescent shape of Lindquist Beach are small trees and shrubs forming little cubbies, which make your beach spot feel more private. All that’s left for a perfect beach day is to sink your toes in the slightly pink tinted sand and wade in the gentle waters. The right side of the beach is more rocky when entering the water, but it’s also quieter than the left side.

There is a $5 fee to enter Smith Bay, as well as an extra $2 to park a vehicle.

Dinner in Red Hook

Patio on the water in Red Hook on St Thomas USVI

Besides being where the ferry dock is located, Red Hook has a lively scene in the evening. There are many restaurants in the area to check out, some of which are even on the water.

For an elegant option that still feels beachy, check out The Easterly . The menu is filled with sophisticated sea food offerings for both small plates and entrée size portions. The cocktail menu is excellent as well, with enthusiastic bartenders who are happy to leave the menu and craft whatever you want.

Alternatively, for a dressed down waterfront option, Outriggers is a solid choice. This is the place to go when you’re craving fried appetizers like calamari or mahi bites. For entrées, keep things casual with a mahi sandwich or taco, or splurge on one of the many fresh fish plates.

Day 7: Last Day on St. Thomas USVI

Spend your last day on St. Thomas USVI at one of the island’s prettiest beaches: Coki Beach. The water here is simply incredible, with some of the brightest turquoise waters on the island, which pop against the fluffy white sand.

Coki Beach is not very big and gets crowded throughout the day. Therefore, it’s best to arrive around 9am to enjoy the best of this beach’s scenery.

This beach also has the perk of offering snorkel and scuba gear rentals right onsite. This is convenient for diving enthusiasts seeking to explore these magnificent waters. For those less interested in actually going in the water, there is also a beach bar just off the sand.

Bright blue water of Coki Beach in St Thomas USVI

That said, be mentally prepared for aggressive venders hawking chair rentals all along the beach. They tend to set guests’ chairs and umbrellas right on the water, which could possibly block the view from where you set up your own towel or chair. If this will dampen your experience, you may just want to rent chairs yourself so no one can block your view.

It’s also worth mentioning that Coki is a notorious weed smoking beach, and you will probably be able to smell it. If this will bother you, then definitely try to arrive early in the morning before the beach gets busy, or perhaps return to a previous beach you enjoyed.

There are both free and paid parking spots available near Coki Beach.

Charlotte Amalie

After a morning spent at Coki Beach, head to historic Charlotte Amalie to explore and grab lunch. This port city was founded in 1681 when the colony was under Danish rule. Today, you can still wander cobblestone paths and visit remaining historic structures, like Fort Christian and Blackbeard’s Castle.

While exploring, you can also do some duty free shopping and grab a souvenir to take home with you. If you get hungry, there are plenty of restaurants in this popular tourist area to check out.

There you have it – the perfect way to spend one amazing week in St. Thomas USVI. This bustling island is an amazing choice for vacationers seeking convenience, but wanting a more adventurous experience beyond an all-inclusive resort. St. Thomas will allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds: breathtaking scenery without sacrificing abundant restaurants, nightlife, and amenities.

Although well written it basically beaches and eating. Having been there 10 times there is much more to do than beaches every day. Coral world with it’s underwater observatory is a must and Mahogany Bay Golf Course( home of the devil’s triangle) is one of the best in the Caribbean. Shopping the small alleys downtown and many smaller quaint shops as well as cafes will give a local flavor. Also you should mention that Megan’s Bay is clothing optional

Should have included coral world!

While in St Thomas, avoid Sunny Liston Tours. They no-showed me when I got off the cruise ship. Now they are trying to jerk me around about the refund. Keep that in mind when you book an excursion in St Thomas!

This Stunning Caribbean Island Is Easy to Reach From the East Coast — and It Has Beautiful Beaches and World-class Snorkeling

Here's what you need to know about visiting St. Thomas.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

tourist map of st. thomas us virgin islands

The easiest of the U.S. Virgin Islands to reach, St. Thomas is both the gateway to St. John and St. Croix and a beloved vacation destination in its own right. Tourists primarily flock to this popular Caribbean paradise for its beautiful beaches and world-class snorkeling. It's also steeped in maritime history and pirate legends, which make for some interesting attractions.

The frequency of international travelers has left a mark over the years. As a result, St. Thomas exudes a cosmopolitan atmosphere, especially in the bustling capital of Charlotte Amalie, which is brimming with Danish colonial architecture, duty-free shops, and cultural landmarks.

A busy port for cruise ships, the island swells when big boats dock. Given St. Thomas is only 32 square miles, you can see many major sights and relish some beach time all in a few hours. However, many people prefer to spend a couple of days or more on the island to cover more sun-soaked ground and splash in the turquoise tides.

Getting to St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the most accessible of the U.S. Virgin Islands. American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, and United all operate direct flights from major East Coast airports, including New York, Boston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. From takeoff to landing, it's only about four hours (of course, this varies slightly depending on the departure point). Upping the convenience factor even more? Americans get to enjoy the ease of domestic travel — online check-in and not needing a passport — as the island is an unincorporated U.S. territory. St. Thomas is also easy to reach via plane or boat from other Caribbean destinations , making it a requisite stop on any island-hopping holiday.

Best Things to Do on St. Thomas

St. Thomas has a treasure trove of sandy stretches with dozens of beautiful beaches. Postcard-worthy and popular Magens Bay on the north coast is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Those wanting to avoid the crowds will find quiet places like Lindquist Beach, part of the 21-acre protected Smith Bay Park, situated on the island's eastern end.

With some of the clearest water in the world and tons of tropical fish, it's no surprise that snorkeling is one of the main draws here. Families especially love the calm bays that make swimming and exploring fun and safe for kiddos. Some of the top spots to see magnificent marine life include Coki Point Beach, Secret Harbour, and Brewers Bay. It's also highly recommended to join a boat excursion to Honeymoon Beach on lesser-known Water Island.

Charlotte Amalie is a vibrant hub for shopping, entertainment, and history. There are more than 100 duty-free stores, including many jewelers. (Some travelers even report bringing an extra suitcase dedicated to carrying back souvenirs.)

Keen on learning a bit more about the island's past? Check out the eye-catching 17th-century Fort Christian, which showcases a central clock tower and on-site museum. St. Thomas is also home to the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The Pirates Treasure Museum brings the legends and lore of deep-sea escapades to life through interactive exhibits.

For a workout and superb panoramas, climb the 99 Steps. Colloquially referred to as "step-street," it's a staircase built from bricks brought over by 18th-century Danish ships. Another high-altitude must, the Skyride aerial tram climbs 700 feet above Charlotte Amalie to Paradise Point.

Budding botanists of all ages should take a trip to Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden , while art fans won't want to pass up the chance to visit the childhood home of French impressionist Camille Pissarro. Nightlife enthusiasts can hit the lively beach bars and clubs.

Best St. Thomas Hotels and Resorts

Marriott's frenchman's cove.

Perfect for family vacations and group getaways, Marriott's Frenchman's Cove features spacious villas with two or three bedrooms, living and dining areas, fully equipped kitchens, and patios. The hillside property also treats guests to ample amenities — including an infinity pool with a waterslide — and activities, as well as gorgeous vistas of Pacquereau Bay.

Secret Harbour Beach Resort

Located on the quieter east end of St. Thomas, Secret Harbour Beach Resort is a favorite among families and couples looking for a relaxed escape that doesn't skimp on fun outdoorsy activities. Besides snorkeling, scuba diving, and tennis, guests rave about the renovated condo-style units that are just steps from the sand.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

A luxury resort that very much caters to families, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas sits on a beautiful sandy beach and has a slew of kid- and parent-approved amenities, ranging from a top-notch kids' club to a pool with a waterslide. There are four restaurants, 180 revamped guest rooms, and the famous sunset catamaran cruises.

At Home in the Tropics

For a boutique stay with a central location, At Home in the Tropics provides a laid-back vibe that feels more grown-up than many of the area's larger resorts. Housed in a lovely historic Danish building overlooking the harbor, the bed-and-breakfast offers a pool, four coastal-inspired guest rooms, and equally breezy common spaces.

Best St. Thomas Restaurants

Pangea terra table.

Pangea Terra Table focuses on farm-to-fork fare made with seasonal organic ingredients served in a lovely alfresco setting with a lively bar. Beyond the delicious food, the restaurant's sustainability initiatives — which include an on-site garden, using zero plastic, and composting — are admirable.

Heidi's Honeymoon Grill

The perfect spot for a leisurely lunch on Water Island, Heidi's Honeymoon Grill serves flavorful fish tacos and strong rum cocktails to day-trippers. Grab a shaded table on the deck and soak in the sparkling views until your food arrives.

Prime at Paradise Point

Craving a fancier dinner — perhaps one that involves leaving the kids with a babysitter back at the hotel? Prime at Paradise Point is a special-occasion-worthy choice, with indulgent dishes like local lobster, tomahawk steak, and truffle mac and cheese.

Side Street Pub

Hungry shoppers who need to refuel between duty-free purchases can head to Side Street Pub for slow-cooked pulled pork tacos, homemade salsa, and Caribbean chicken sandwiches. It's a family-owned hidden gem in Charlotte Amalie, with friendly service that's well worth the effort to find.

St. Thomas Beach Guide

St. Thomas has over 40 major beaches along its sun-drenched coasts. There are strands with crystal blue water and swaying coconut trees where a beach bum can enjoy a lazy-lazy day. For more active beach goers there are sandy coves with activities like windsurfing and kayaking. Some shores are rugged and rocky offering beauty, solitude and the opportunity to daydream about castaway fantasies. And there are widely popular bay-like beaches with amenities such as restaurants, rest rooms, chair rentals and complete water sports centers offering a variety of rental equipment .

St. Thomas Weddings / Romance

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Thomas above others?

Stuck on the Go

St. Thomas Itinerary, USVI: How To Spend 6 Days in Paradise

Sharing is caring!

Looking for the ideal St. Thomas Itinerary for your trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands?

St. Thomas, USVI, holds a special place in my heart. It was one of my most memorable family vacations, the first place I traveled without my parents and then where I spent my honeymoon.

So, since I’ve had the chance to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands multiple times, I created a complete St. Thomas itinerary to share what’s so special about it!

A cocktail on a bar at Magens Bay in St. Thomas, USVI.

It holds the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure and is an amazing, underrated spot for a couple’s getaway. Combine that with the ease of getting there from anywhere in the south or along the east coast of the US, and it makes one of the best honeymoon islands near the U.S.

This itinerary will show you the best way to spend a week in St. Thomas, followed by some of my top tips for enjoying this island.

Day 6 – Beaches and Fishing

Sapphire beach resort, marriott’s frenchman’s cove, how do you get around st. thomas without a car.

General Tips for Visiting St. Thomas, USVI

  • St. Thomas is a US Territory, and they use US currency, so you do not need a passport (though it may be handy if you want to take a day trip to the British Virgin Islands).
  • They drive on the opposite side of the road, but the steering wheel is still on the left side of the car (weird, right?).
  • I have never felt unsafe in St. Thomas, but I take some precautions. I don’t go into Charlotte Amalie at night, and I’m usually with another person when I leave the resort.
  • If you’d like to see more of the USVI, it’s easy to take a ferry to St. John, and you can visit St. Croix by a short plane ride. But I think St. Thomas has enough to fill your USVI itinerary for at least a week!
  • If you choose not to rent a car, bring plenty of cash for taxis. There is no ride-share service like Uber or Lyft.

One Week in St. Thomas (6-Day Itinerary)

This St. Thomas guide follows exactly how my husband and I spent our honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands because it honestly could not have been more perfect.

You’ll notice there are only 6 days, and that’s because in this St. Thomas Itinerary, we have not included travel days. You should expect to spend one day on each end of the trip flying to/from the islands.

Day 1 – Day Trip to The British Virgin Islands

a group of sailboats and houseboats on the bay of St. Thomas

Jump into island life full-force and take a British Virgin Islands day trip. Two companies that I have gone with are New Horizons & Breakaway Charters – though it looks like they are no longer running this tour – and Stormy Pirates . I would highly recommend either company.

You must bring your passport if you want to go on this excursion. This is one of the best tours in St. Thomas though, so I can’t recommend it enough.

Before you leave the marina in Red Hook, stop by Lattes in Paradise and grab a breakfast sandwich and morning brew. I loved it so much that we went back again for breakfast later in the week.

As soon as you get on the boat, the captain or first mate will go over safety precautions and then offer you a drink. One captain told us drinking before noon doesn’t make you an alcoholic, it makes you a pirate (lol).

a man holding a drink in one of the clearwater pools in Baths National Park

The first stop on the trip is Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda. Here, you’ll find beautiful views on a hike down to the beach, with incredible rock formations surrounding you on your way down.

Once you make it to the beach, there’s a little bar, and you get to spend about half an hour here enjoying the view and wading in the ocean among the towering boulders.

A taxi will take you back to your boat, and then depending on what trip you take, you could either be headed to Pusser’s for lunch or to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. If you go to Pusser’s, you’ll also get to snorkel for a bit after lunch then head to White Bay.

White Bay is known for the Soggy Dollar Bar, which is named because your dollars may literally be soggy when you leave!

There are no docks at the bay, so the boats anchor near the beach, and you have to swim to land. Most captains will hand around a dry bag, so you don’t have to jump in with your wallet in your pocket.

🛥 Check prices for cruise & sailing options here . 🛥

A boat on the ocean with a bar in the background on Jost Van Dyke.

On the way back to Red Hook, you do have to stop at Cruz Bay in St. John to go through Customs. It’s a very simple process.

We were so tired once we got back that we went to our room and crashed. If you feel like going out though, head to one of the best restaurants in Red Hook , Island Time Pub, for a lively atmosphere, a beautiful view, and great food.

Day 2 – Relax at the Beaches and See Marine Life

Today is much more relaxing and laid back.

First, head to Coral World Ocean Park – one of the most popular St. Thomas attractions . On the way there, grab a smoothie for breakfast from Martha’s Smoothies at Coki Beach (right next to Coral World).

Coral World is perfect for any animal lover. It’s like a small zoo or aquarium; the main attraction (in my opinion) is an underwater observatory where you can watch animals swim in the open channel.

Two women hosting the Sea Lion Show at Coral World Ocean Park

Something I enjoyed that I wasn’t expecting was the presentations with the animals made by the staff. We saw a show with a sea lion, a sea turtle feeding, and an interactive presentation at the touch pool. If you can’t tell, I’m very much a kid at heart.

🐢 Book your tickets for Coral World Ocean Park here. 🐢

After you’ve had your fill of animal education, you can head right next door to Coki Beach. It is a 2-minute walk (if that), and you’ll pass a stand selling snorkels and flippers. They rent for a reasonable price (around $10).

You can also rent chairs on the beach to place your things, and waiters will come around and take your drink order from the beach bars. Though it may not look like much, be sure to order fish from the place with a wooden bar where you can sit. If you like seafood, you won’t be disappointed.

The view of Coki Beach, St. Thomas, USVI.

While you are snorkeling, be sure to keep your chairs in view. I’ve never had anything stolen, but you never know.

After a relaxing afternoon at one of my favorite beaches in St. Thomas , go back and get ready for a night out in Red Hook.

For apps and drinks, head to Duffy’s Love Shack , which is a must for the atmosphere alone. It’s a tiki bar in the middle of a parking lot. They offer endless creative drinks and bar food if you’re hungry.

A tiki bar with green shudder doors.

Once you’re ready for dinner, you can walk down to Tap & Still for the best chicken sandwich on the island. Their burgers are pretty good, too. Their fries are served in brown paper bags where you can see the grease stains from all that fried deliciousness.

Day 3 – Day Trip to St. John

Set out on another adventure to a different island, staying within the US Virgin Islands. Take the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John, which is about a 30-minute ferry ride if you leave out of Red Hook and one of the best St. Thomas day trips .

Leave early in the morning and grab breakfast at North Shore Deli in Mongoose Junction. If you have a small soft-shell cooler that fits in a backpack, I highly recommend some of their grab-and-go foods for a picnic lunch on the beach.

Bacon, egg, & cheese sandwich on english muffin with a beer.

After you’ve fueled up for the day, catch a taxi out of Cruz Bay and head to the Cinnamon Bay Trailhead in the Virgin Islands National Park – one of the most beautiful National Parks on the East Coast.

The trail begins on Centerline Road and winds down to some sugar plantation ruins and, ultimately the most beautiful beach you have ever seen.

Note: The trail is about 1.8 miles long and rated moderate-strenuous. I wore my Chaco sandals and was so glad I did. They are one of my favorite gifts for outdoorsy women! Also, make a great gift idea for hikers .

When I first visited, all of the amenities at Cinnamon Bay had been removed in the hurricanes. But now it seems like all of the Cinnamon Bay amenities have been rebuilt and look absolutely amazing.

Food trucks occasionally set up near the beach and there is a cafe at the campground. This does mean there may be more crowds, though.

You can also grab a quick taxi to Trunk Bay, where there are more food trucks and even a snorkel trail through the national park!

Be sure to rent snorkels for the afternoon.

Bright blue ocean with two small mountains rising in the middle of the photo.

Once you’ve had enough of lounging on the beach, head back to Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay for some shopping and dinner.

If you get back a little early, I recommend stopping by The Tap Room by St. John Brewers for some snacks and cold beer.

Then, for dinner, walk back towards the ferry dock to Cruz Bay Landing , where you may even get some live music. Tyler and I loved just chilling on the patio and people-watching!

You can check the ferry schedule here . Be sure to catch the last boat out, or you’ll have to stay the night on St. John.

If you have the opportunity to spend a week in the USVI, you should definitely take one day in St. Thomas to visit another US Virgin Islands, and St. John is a fantastic choice!

Day 4 – Local Cuisine and Sunset Cruises

Assuming you stay at one of the USVI’s amazing resorts (I’ll talk about my favorites in a minute), you should spend the morning by the pool, taking the warm weather and island views.

We chose to take a food tour for lunch with St. Thomas Food Tours . The Historic Downtown Tour gives you an interesting overview of the history of St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie.

You also get to see some interesting sights off the beaten path, like a mural in the post office and the Taphus – a brewery behind the Billabong store.

A mural in a post office in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI.

Of course, the main attraction of this St. Thomas food tour is the local cuisine you’ll try. Callaloo, conch fritters, and fungi are just a few dishes that we sampled. You’ll also get a good idea of some restaurants to come back to if you’d like.

After the food tour, you can explore and shop in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Some of the best shopping can be found along Dronningens Gade, or if you’re looking for something more high end you should have a look at Havensight Mall.

Finish the day off just as relaxing as the morning with a sunset cruise. One is offered out of Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove on the VI Cat , and New Horizons & Breakaway Charters offers a cruise out of Red Hook.

Sunset cruises are one of my favorite types of boat tours in St. Thomas . They are magical!

Bottomless painkillers (a local cocktail) are served on the cruise, as well as hors d’oeuvres. You’ll also have incredible views of the island as the sun gradually makes its way down. Sunset sails are very popular for a St. Thomas vacation!

If you didn’t fill up with snacks on board, then head to Amalia Café for dinner after you dock. You can sit out on the patio and enjoy a nice drink with delicious Spanish tapas.

Day 5 – Mangrove Lagoon (Kayaking, Hiking, and Snorkeling)

You’ll be glad you took yesterday to relax because today is another adventure, and this one will surely tire you out!

Virgin Island Ecotours offers a full-day Kayak, Hike, and snorkel Adventure at Mangrove Lagoon if you’re up for it. I do recommend only taking this trip if you are in semi-decent shape but it’s one of the best snorkeling tours in St. Thomas .

Kayaking is what can get difficult, especially when you are coming back at the end of the day.

Tyler and I decided to do individual kayaks, but it’s probably so much easier if you’re in a tandem kayak. They also offer shorter tours if you don’t feel like you are up for the full five hours.

A man and woman kayaking in yellow boats in St. Thomas, USVI.

This was one of my absolute favorite days of the trip, and that’s saying a lot. Kayaking through Stingray Alley and between the little islands with mangrove trees all around is breathtaking.

You won’t find a better location for kayaking in St. Thomas . We also got to stop and take a hike to some tidal pools that were full of marine life.

Rocky coastline with water spraying through a geyser hole and man & woman beside it.

Our guide, D’Haden, was fantastic and knowledgeable about the plants and animals we encountered.

He led us to Cas Cay next, where we had a packed lunch of sandwiches and watched a hermit crab race. The hermit crabs were a little unnerving as there were so many, and they were EVERYWHERE.

After a short hike on Cas Cay, it was finally time to snorkel. I’ve been lucky enough to snorkel at many places around the world, but this was by far my favorite. There were schools of colorful fish, lobster, octopus, and we even saw a stingray and barracuda!

It truly was an adventure to remember. A must on any Virgin Islands itinerary!

Once we made it back to the room, we did have to take a nap before going out that night. Even then, we were still pretty tired!

We do love going out to one fancy restaurant each time we go on vacation to St. Thomas, and this time we chose the Old Stone Farmhouse . The name perfectly describes the complex, as it’s a stone building from an old sugar plantation.

The food, presentation, and service are all incredible, and if they still have it on the menu, I highly recommend the bread sampler appetizer and Key Lime Pie dessert.

Start the day with breakfast at Margaritaville. They have huge omelets that any savory breakfast lover will enjoy, or for those that prefer sweet, the French Toast will hit the spot.

Once breakfast is over, make your way out to Magen’s Bay, but try to get there a little early since it gets super crowded. in the afternoon. This is the most popular beach on the island, but in all honestly, it wasn’t our favorite.

It costs $5 to get into the beach, and while they do have a nice bar and space to rent chairs/umbrellas, it was SO crowded. We got there late morning and snagged one of the last shady places at the bar to sit and people-watch for a while.

Beer on the bar at Magen's Bay, St. Thomas, USVI.

Book an afternoon fishing excursion with Ocean Surfari or Double Header Sportfishing . Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time out on the water, the captains will ensure you have a great time.

While you aren’t guaranteed to catch fish, most people don’t go home without a little bit of excitement at least.

The first time I went fishing in St. Thomas, my dad caught a Blue Marlin, and the last time I caught a beautiful African Pompano!!!

Sunset behind a mountain with a fishing rod in front of the waves.

Not only is it a great trip if you love to fish, but the scenery is unmatched, too. Depending on the time of the excursion, you might even get a second sunset cruise!

Once you make it back, head out to the Caribbean Fish Market for the last meal on the island.

Where to stay in st. thomas (best resorts).

If you’re traveling with family, then Mango Tree Travel recommends staying at Secret Harbour . They love staying here for the spacious rooms, great location, and calm beach.

There are a few resorts that I’ve personally stayed at and really enjoyed in St. Thomas. Whether you can budget a full week or just 3 days in St. Thomas, here are the best places to book a room!

Wyndham Margaritaville St. Thomas

Wyndham Margaritaville St. Thomas certainly did not disappoint with this property. My parents are Wyndham Timeshare owners, so we have been to many of the resorts in the southeast, and I do believe this one tops them all in my experience.

A view of the ocean from the hillside pool at Margaritaville St. Thomas with mountains in the background and colorful chairs in the foreground.

The fun Caribbean atmosphere, friendly staff, and amenities truly set it apart. The Margaritaville Restaurant on-site should not be missed, and there is a reasonable convenience store with a deli in case you forget anything from home or need a quick bite.

The two pools and a private beach offer many places to relax. My favorite is the hillside pool with a swim-up bar. Each room has its own margarita machine, so buy the supplies and have an afternoon of bottomless margs from your own balcony.

If you keep debating where to stay in St. Thomas , this one gets my vote.

Located on the beautiful Sapphire Beach, equipped with a water sports center, Sapphire Beach Resort has it all. The beach is a destination in itself, while the gorgeous pool is for guests only.

The adjacent marina offers almost any excursion you can think of, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for there, book one out of Red Hook that’s less than a mile away. Red Hook also offers shopping and many dining options.

This charming resort will make you wonder if you’re in a quaint Italian seaside village instead of the Caribbean. The Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove Resort is conveniently located near Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas.

The ocean with colorful Marriott's Frenchman's Cove buildings in view in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI.

The poolside restaurant has a gorgeous ocean view, and chairs are available on the beach for lounging. Frenchman’s Cove also has a small marina where sunset cruises set sail. Check with the concierge for other offerings.

When To Visit St. Thomas, USVI

The peak season for travel in St. Thomas is December to March, when the weather is absolutely perfect for all of us sun-lovers. 70s-80s with a mild breeze. April to June shoulder season is my favorite time to visit, as you should still have great weather with fewer crowds.

Hurricane season is from June to September and can last into October. The last few seasons have not been good for the islands. Planning a trip during these times could be a gamble. But hey, we’re in the middle of a Pandemic right now, crazy things happen all the time.

If you are planning a larger US Virgin Islands itinerary, this also goes for the other islands.

FAQ for St. Thomas, USVI

How much are flights to st. thomas.

This varies, of course, but you can find deals on the East Coast that are in the $200s. It can get up in the $1,000s, though. If you are wondering how to find the best flight deals , I use Google Flights for all my flight searches.

When is the best time to visit St. Thomas?

The best time is shoulder season in April – June. The most popular time with the best weather is December – March.

Is St. Thomas safe?

I’ve been four times and never felt unsafe. However, I always travel with another person and am never outside of the resort or in downtown Red Hook after dark. I always try to take precautions just as I would anywhere else.

It is very easy to get around using taxis, and I even prefer that over renting a car on the island. The driving style there is much different than here in the US, and I would not be comfortable driving myself around.

Final Thoughts: One Week in St. Thomas Itinerary

St. Thomas is one of the most special places in the Caribbean to me. Even after visiting multiple times, I can’t wait to go back.

There are just so many things to do that your St. Thomas itinerary will never feel repetitive or bland, especially if you base it on the outline I just provided. Make sure to budget for a few excursions, too, since this is the best part of staying in St. Thomas!

As someone who loves trying new things, my favorite part of this itinerary is the day we spent kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling in St. Thomas .

But if you are visiting on a romantic holiday or honeymoon, then you can’t skip the sunset cruise with New Horizons & Breakaway Charters !

I hope you enjoy the St. Thomas, USVI, as much as I do!

They are gorgeous! It’s an amazing place.

I will definitely keep this handy for the future whenever I visit here. It looks like an amazing place.

It really is, I hope you are able to go one day!

Wow St.Thomas looks like a relaxed place with great vibes. addin it to my bucket list for my next USA trip

It is definitely one of my favorite vacation spots in the US. Hope you’ll get to visit one day!

What a beautiful place – and the food and drink looks pretty good too!

Yes, I love trying all kinds of food when I travel. It’s great here!

St. Thomas looks so beautiful I still need to visit a lot of places in the Caribbean. Great guide!

Thank you! I think a lot of people on the East Coast (myself included) take the Caribbean for granted and overlook it. There are some really amazing islands and lots more that I would love to explore!

Been looking for destinations around the US for some trips this year in case borders don’t open all the way… leaning towards our Virgin Islands. It looks so enticing!!

Oh yes, it would be perfect! Hopefully there won’t be as many restrictions for traveling here as there would be internationally. I highly recommend it if you can go!

Wow! I haven’t been to the Virgin Islands yet but this is such a great guide! Love that you suggest a little of everything and the food plus those views has me dying to visit!

Thank you! Yes, the food is fantastic and there is so much to do on the island. You won’t get bored for sure!

This looks like absolute paradise! The water is incredible. I’ve never been to the Caribbean but there are quite a few places I’d love to visit! This has just moved up the list.

Oh I hope you can go one day! It’s really beautiful. I think it’s a paradise for sure!

This is a great itinerary. The British Virgin Islands Day Trip, and the Coral World Ocean Park are right up my alley of fun. Will save this for sure!

Thank you! There are so many fun things to do on the island. The BVI Day trip is a must for sure!

Ah this looks like an amazing trip and so beautiful! Days at the beach would be a must but I’d love to go sailing, kayaking and scuba dive. Great post!

I’ve never looked into whether they offer scuba diving somewhere on the island. If I’m being honest that’s always scared me a little bit. If you love the beach this is the perfect destination!

I’m feeling all Caribbean after reading this! We tried conch in the Bahamas and it was pretty good. I’d like to visit the USVI one day.

I hope you get to Lisa! The Caribbean has such a unique feel doesn’t it. 🙂

I’m all about the beach with a book and a beer…so this is my kind of itinerary.

It’s so relaxing isn’t it!? There’s nothing better.

Sounds like a great trip! I’d love to try some conch fritters on the food tour 🙂

And of course, the water looks gorgeous!

Thanks Lannie! I know you also appreciate a good food tour. 🙂 It’s definitely beautiful!

This looks like such a gorgeous place! I appreciate that you included such a variety of activities and places you’d recommend to eat in your itinerary, Anna. I would love all of the snorkeling opportunities in that beautiful water and would have to visit St. John Brewers!

Glad you liked it Becky! Snorkeling here is fantastic and I did love St. John. I’d like to go back and stay on St. John instead of St. Thomas one time!

Anna this looks excellent. I see why you love it. No end of things to do. But the driving doesn’t sound a little funny. Would be very confusing.

Thank you John! That’s true, there is so much to do other than lounge around. Not that lounging is bad, I just can’t do it for a full week. Yes, I’d have to work up a lot of courage before I could drive around there.

Such a great article! Hopefully I’ll be able to visit someday! ☺️

Thank you! Yes, I hope you can too. 🙂

It sounds amazing and I’d love to stay at Frenchman’s Cove at the Marriot. The water looks perfect for snorkeling.

Thanks Wendy, yes Frenchman’s Cove was a gorgeous spot. There are great snorkeling opportunities all over the island.

I’m all about the beach, but haven’t made it here yet. Everything looks and sounds like a perfect getaway.

St. Thomas really is my perfect vacation destination. Next time I might stay on St. John but I just love the area. Plus it’s a cheaper alternative to many island destinations and easy to get to from the US!

Something that should definitely be on the list is Pizza Pi: the boat pizzeria! It’s so good.

Oh I’ve heard of that but never made it there to eat! Good to know, I’ll definitely add it to my list for when I go back. 🙂

5-Day St. Thomas, USVI Itinerary: How To Spend Your Week 2024

By: Author Martin Soto

Home » USVI » 5-Day St. Thomas, USVI Itinerary: How To Spend Your Week 2024

St. Thomas is one of three U.S Virgin Islands and is by far  the most visited island . It’s the perfect vacation destination and offers everything you would want out of a vacation spot. Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends, with a significant other, or as a family, you can find an activity that everyone will like.

It has beaches with some of the bluest waters in the world, an extensive nightlife offering numerous clubs and bars around the area and thrilling activities for adults and kids alike. Here is a complete full 5-day itinerary so that you can make the most out of your vacation for the week.

Where To Stay In St. Thomas?

St. Thomas is a pretty extensive island with places for visitors to stay in several different areas. For my trip, I stayed in  Bunker Hill Hotel , which is located in Charlotte Amalie. It was very budget-friendly, the receptionist staff was friendly, and you also got complimentary breakfast with your stay. You get a choice of three different breakfast meals, so you don’t get bored of the same breakfast each day, and the food is excellent. Another excellent budget option for the capital city that I’d highly recommend is the  Green Iguana Hotel .

You also have several options apart from just the local budget hotels.  There are also all-inclusive resorts , AirBnb’s, and private villas. It all comes down to your budget. You can certainly find a cheap Airbnb if you’re traveling on a tight budget, or you can splurge and rent a room in an expensive all-inclusive resort like  Bolongo Bay Beach Resort .

In terms of areas, I’d recommend either  staying close to Charlotte Amalie  as there are plenty of things to do in the territory’s capital, and also you’re right in between the middle of things.

On the other hand, I’ve heard a lot of great things about Red Hook. It’s a bit more costly but still reasonable, and you’re also close to the ferry that can take you to St. John. There is an abundance of restaurants in the area, and it’s close to the nightlife, with bars and clubs in close proximity.

One-Week Itinerary Guide In St. Thomas, USVI

Chances are if you’re visiting St. Thomas, you’re arriving at the Cyril E. King Airport. Take a taxi to your hotel, check in, and get ready for the day.

If you’re looking for lunch, there are plenty of good lunch places all around the island. Some of the most famous are Gladys’ Cafe right in the downtown district or Bernie’s Bar & Grill if you’re near Red Hook.

After lunch, head out to one of St. Thomas’s famous beaches — Magens Bay Beach. Magens Bay Beach is considered one of the world’s best beaches, with some of the clearest water, white sand, and warm water perfect for swimming. As a side note, if you want to avoid other tourists, hike to the left side of the beach. Since taxies can’t access this part, it’s much less crowded. You can always try other beaches like Coki Beach and Lindquist Beach.

If you’re up for it, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the waters. There are plenty of picture-perfect places around the area, so don’t forget your travel camera and backpack. There is also a snack stand close by if you want an extra snack or two.

Once you finish spending a relaxing time at the beach, go back home and get ready for some dinner and barhopping over at Red Hook. Red Hook, which is located on the East side of St. Thomas, is the premier area for nightlife on the island with various bars plus numerous restaurants.

For dinner, visit The Tap & Still Redhook, which offers some delicious burgers and wings. Once you’re done with dinner, check out Duffy’s Love Shack. It has a vibrant tropical atmosphere, and the bartenders are great. You can also get some delicious food here with some tasty drinks. It’s essentially a bar in the middle of a parking lot. You’ll instantly notice it due to the flashy lights and dancing music.

Day 2:

To get to know the island better and learn about where all the cool things are, book a kayaking tour with  St. Thomas Adventure Tours . It’s perfect for small groups since you get a very personalized experience. The kayak and snorkel tour is amazing since you get a good mix of both worlds. They take you around St. Thomas and take you to well-known areas for finding sea turtles and other marine life.

They got this awesome picture of me with a sea turtle down below:

snorkeling usvi

You also get free sandwiches along with small snacks to keep you energized, so you don’t have to worry about food on the trip. On average, the tours last anywhere between two to four hours, so you’ll be spending the majority of your day here.

After the tour is over, head back to the hotel and shower to prepare for the next activities. Chances are you’ll likely be hungry so head on over to either Taco Chelles East End for some tacos or Charlo’s Cuisine for some authentic Caribbean food.

At this point, if you want to go out again, you can try Iggies Beach Bar & Grill or The Box Bar.

Day 3:

St. John is a must-see, even if you specifically traveled to St. Thomas. St. Thomas has beautiful beaches and hiking trails, but St. John is the king in the Virgin Islands when it comes to the outdoors since it holds the only U.S Virgin Islands National Park. So it’s only right to spend a day exploring the island, if you’re not already staying here.

Eat some breakfast, and then head down to the ferry, which is close to Red Hook. It’s only a 20-25 minute ferry ride to get to St. John, and round trip tickets are only $12. Plus you also get some amazing views of the island.

st john by ferry ride

Cruz Bay and Coral Bay are two of the most popular areas in St John, but if you’re just visiting for the day I’d recommend staying at Cruz Bay since thats where the ferry enters.

Upon arrival, grab some lunch at some of the top-notch restaurants near the ferry dock. High Tide is one of the more well-known seafood restaurants and I loved their steak. Otherwise, you also try The Longboard. There various food options at any of these two but also plenty of other choices if neither interests you.

Two-thirds of the entire island is a national park and thus, there are numerous hiking trails and beaches you can visit. If you’re on the lookout for sea turtles, then Maho Bay Beach should be your top choice for snorkeling. Honeymoon beach and Trunk Bay Beach are two other fantastic options.

kami snorkeling at maho bay beach

To snorkel, simply rent out equipment at one of the many shops. I would recommend Low Key Watersports. The prices are reasonable at only 10$ for snorkeling equipment for the entire day. You can also rent kayaking equipment and scuba diving equipment if you’re certified.

Ferry’s occur throughout the entire day until 10:00 pm, so you have enough time to explore the island and do all sorts of activities.

Day 4:

For your fourth day, you can spend the day in Charlotte Amalie, which is the capital of the U.S Virgin Islands. If you’re on a cruise ship, you will more than likely stop at their port here. The city has a wide range of activities you can do to the point where you can spend the entire day exploring the area. You can visit some notable historical landmarks like Blackbeard’s castle and 99 steps.

Spend some time on Main street to buy souvenirs to bring back home. If you’re a fan of jewelry, you’ll be happy to know there is an insane amount of jewelry shops on the strip. There are also plenty of clothing stores and gift shops.

For lunch or dinner, you’ll have plenty of food options like Glady’s Cafe where you can get a good view of the sea. You also have the classy Oceana Restaurant & Bistro, which probably offers one of the best views. If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you can try Greengo’s Caribbean Cantina.

Near the area, there is also the Pirates Treasure Museum. If you’re lucky, you might be able to talk to this guy down below:

pirate museum johnny deep

Day 5:

After spending an entire day exploring Charlotte Amalie, why not try a thrilling activity close to it — zip lining. Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline in St. Thomas is the only zip lining company on the island.

You get to zip through the woods and get great views of the island. The staff is excellent and entertaining, which makes the entire experience worthwhile and memorable. If you’ve never been ziplining before, it’s a great first-time experience. Most of their tours happen during the morning, so it’s probably one of the first things you will want to do. Also, try to avoid days where it might rain since we had to stop mid-way due to it.

ziplining Tree Limin Extreme

After burning some calories zip-lining (it’s actually quite the healthy exercise), you might want to head out for food. Since you’re near the Charlotte Amalie area, consider checking out The Greenhouse Restaurant & Bar, which is by the waterfront. It has an outdoor patio, perfect for eating while enjoying the nice warm weather. You’ll find some of the best seafood the islands have to offer here.

After lunch, take a ferry to go on a day trip to St. Croix.  St. Croix is the largest island in the U.S Virgin Islands  and is famous for its history. History enthusiasts will enjoy the island as it has many historical sites that played an impact throughout its history. Another less popular option you can visit that many people don’t know about is Water Island.

You can take a ferry from Charlotte Amalie to get to the island. There you can either go on a Historic Walking Tour if you’re interested in the history of the island, go wine-tasting, and also enjoy some live entertainment that consists of things like fire dancing, cultural dancers, live bands, and much more.

When To Visit St. Thomas

st thomas

St. Thomas is the most popular island of the three, so it’s no surprise that it receives the most tourists. Certain times might be  more favorable to visit  depending on what exactly it is that you’re looking for.

For the most part,  as a tropical destination the weather is warm all year round , so that’s not much of a deal-breaker about when to go. However, the rainiest days tend to occur between the months of August, September, and October. The hurricane season falls between July to October, so do your research on the weather before you decide to book your trip. The times of the year with most tourists are between the months of May, June, and July. If you don’t mind that too much, then these months are great to visit but also the hottest.

If you have the opportunity, I’d recommend traveling during the month of March and April as the weather is excellent with little to no rainfall and there are a lot fewer tourists during this time.

How To Move Around In St. Thomas

It’s important to highlight how you can move around the island. Unlike most vacation places, there are no Ubers or Lyfts in the U.S Virgin Islands. The only way to move from place to place is to either take a taxi, rent a car or use their public transit system known as VITRAN.

If you’re renting a car, know that people drive on the opposite side of the road here than what you might be accustomed to. It can certainly be tricky, and you should be careful when driving since it’s easy to get confused. Roads aren’t always the most well-built either, so ensure you get insurance for your rental car.

Overall, I had no issues or complaints using their taxi system. They’re literally everywhere, and there is also an official number you can call that directs you to an operator who will find a taxi for you no matter where you are. If you’re traveling from outside the U.S, consider  using a SIM card since phone reception  isn’t the best in the island. While the prices are certainly reasonable, you pay per person. This means even if you’re with a group of friends and you’re all going to the same destination, you will all have to pay the same amount. This is probably one of the biggest transportation complaints, and if you’re traveling as a family the costs can quickly add up. Also, they only accept cash. So be sure to have some money with you at all times.

If you’re not in a rush or are on a budget, it might be worth trying their transportation system. You can use  the VITRAN website  to find out when the bus will come and the locations it stops at. It’s very cheap at only $1 per fare.

Is St. Thomas Safe?

Overall, St. Thomas and the virgin islands as a whole is pretty safe. I personally never had any moments where I felt I was in danger or felt unsafe. This includes the times when I was trying to find my way back home or walking a couple of blocks back to my hotel at midnight. While petty theft does happen as it happens in most other places, you can reduce the likely by using an anti theft bag or backpack. As always, you should be cautious just as you would back home. While it does have a high crime rate, very few of those crimes happen against visitors. Tourism is a huge part of their economy, so the local government tends to do a decent job at keeping people safe.
