Tour Georgia and Armenia: Six Fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Intriguing Iron Age Stone Circles, Splendid 1,000-Year-Old Churches, and Magnificent Mountain Scenery

Exotic vistas, unfamiliar landscapes, and extraordinary antiquities propel this Far Horizons journey from one side of the Caucasus to the other. Won’t you join us on an expedition to territory few know and fewer visit and to sites and relics you won’t find in most guidebooks? We are headed to ancient Colchis, in the Republic of Georgia, where Jason and the Argonauts collected the golden fleece of a ram and Armenia, the first country to have adopted Christianity as its state religion.

The itinerary includes all UNESCO World Heritage Sites in both countries. In Georgia, we will visit Gelati Monastery, Bagrati, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and Jvari Church, some of the most outstanding examples of medieval religious architecture in the Caucasus. We will drive high into the mountains to Ushguli, a community of four villages located in Svaneti and one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. In Armenia, we will view the ancient churches and monasteries at Echmiatsin, Haghpat, Sanahin, and Geghard.

Much of the ancient history of the Caucasus region is a mystery due to lack of fieldwork, but the region is filled with megalithic structures similar to those found in England, Brittany, and Malta. In Georgia, stand alongside the tallest menhir in the country, and in Armenia, walk along the Megalithic Pathway at Hartashen.

Join Far Horizons as we spend 18 days traversing this remote and surprising region’s stunning mountain scenery and remarkable roadside attractions.

What are the Svaneti Towers?

Located along Georgia’s northern border, the Ushguli area is known for lofty fortified towers dotting the landscape built by the Svan people. For centuries, the Svan have lived by ancient tribal traditions based on a medieval feudal system. Their strongholds, frequently four to five stories tall, were built as long ago as the 8th century to protect these mountain people from marauding invaders and conflicts due to blood feuds.

Then climb to the top of the hill shadowing the village where a field of stone circles may be seen along with St. Nicholas Church. Day 5 Mtskheta, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Jvari Monastery, Samtavro Monastery, Joseph Stalin Museum

Depart Tbilisi this morning and head north to see three UNESCO World Heritage monuments under the umbrella of the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, founded in 1010, contains a zodiac in one of its murals and houses the graves of Georgian kings. Jvari, a 6 th -century monastery, is built on ancient pagan shrines where St. Nino introduced Christianity. Nearby Samtavro Monastery was the former residence of the lords of Mtskheta and the burial and coronation site of the Georgian royal family. Continue to Gori, hometown of Joseph Stalin, and visit the Joseph Stalin Museum. The interpretation is the Soviet version of this former leader of the Soviet Union, as nowhere in the displays are there comments on the 30,000 Georgians who were either executed or imprisoned during Stalin’s rule. Next to the museum sits the wood-and-mud brick cabin where Stalin lived for the first four years of his life. In addition, on the other side stands the bulletproof train carriage that carried Stalin to Yalta in 1945. Drive on to Kutaisi and overnight in the Best Western Hotel for one night. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery, Kutaisi History Museum

Located within the city limits of Kutaisi, both Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral was built at the end of the 10 th  century and named after Bagrat III, the first king of united Georgia. Gelati Monastery is adorned with richly ornamented capitals and houses the tomb of its founder, David the Builder, who defeated the Turks in 1122. It was under his leadership that Georgia became the strongest state in the Caucasus. Stop in the Kutaisi History Museum with superb collections from western Georgia. After lunch, drive through spectacular mountain scenery to Continue to Mestia and overnight for two nights in the 3-star Posta Hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 7 Upper Svaneti, Ushguli Churches

Board 4-wheel drive vehicles and climb into the lofty mountainous region of Svaneti with its snow covered peaks, beautiful alpine valleys and rushing rivers. Upper Svaneti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a treasury of history and art and is celebrated for its remote medieval villages and tower-houses. Called  koshki , these unique stone fortifications were built to protect against invaders who plagued the region and were used both as dwellings and as defense. Ushguli is the highest permanently settled village in Europe at almost 7,000 feet and still preserves many of these tower houses, in addition to medieval castles and churches. The Svaneti area also contains an astonishing chronology of Georgian Christian art displayed within 9 th  and 10 th -century sanctuaries that are richly adorned with wall paintings, and decorated icons and crosses made in local workshops. Visit several of these religious structures as you travel from village to village. The walls of the 12 th -century Church of St. Barbara in Kala are covered with ornate paintings.  In Ipari, the 12 th -century Nakipari Church, or St. George, was adorned with frescoes on the exterior walls and the royal painter Theodore painted the interior in 1130.  In Ushguli, the 10 th -century Church of the Mother of God, or Lamaria, contains frescoes from the 10 th  and 12 th  centuries. Apart from its churches, Svaneti’s greatest wealth is the hundreds of painted and chased icons and crosses which are preserved in the museum of Mestia and in the main village churches. Many of them can be found in Latali, one of the richest communities. Icons like the Archangel Gabriel from the 12 th  to 13 th  century, an icon panel from the 13 th  or 14 th  century, or the Saviour with two layers from the 10 th  and 12 th  centuries, are important cult objects of the villages. In the late afternoon, return to Mestia. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Mestia: Museum of History and Ethnography, Transfiguration Cathedral, Church of St. George

This morning’s explorations of Mestia begin in the Museum of History and Ethnography housed within one of the best-preserved  machub , a typical Svan fortified dwelling consisting of a tower and an adjacent house. Filled with rich treasures of the area – archaeological artifacts, Georgian manuscripts, weapons and armory, jewelry, musical instruments – a highlight is the room filled with 10 th  to 14 th -century icons from Svaneti’s churches, most painted in tempera on wood in the unique Svan style. Located in Laghami, the oldest part of Mestia, the Transfiguration Cathedral is a two-story basilica that dates back to the 9 th  century. The second floor was added in the 13 th  and 14 th  centuries and both the interior and exterior are decorated with stunning frescoes. Finally, we go to the Church of St. George featuring depictions of animals, and the Antique Svan Margiani family residential complex.  In the afternoon, drive from Mestia back to Kutaisi and overnight again in the Best Western Hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 9 Vardzia Cave Monastery, Rabati Castle

As we leave Kutaisi, we stop to view Vardzia Cave Monastery.  Reminiscent of Cappadocia in Turkey, the rooms were dug out of the side of the Erusheli Mountain and when finished covered thirteen levels with more than 6000 rooms, including a throne room. The only entrance to this stronghold was through a hidden tunnel.  The warrior-queen, Tamar, built these fortifications more than 800 years ago as protection from Mongol invaders. After lunch, it is on to the town of Akhalsikhe and Rabati Castle. First constructed in the 13 th  century, the complex was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and then the Russians in the 19 th  century. The massive complex has been beautifully restored with colonnaded pavilions and water works reflecting the exquisite architecture. Within the fortification walls are found a Church, a Synagogue, and a Mosque and  medrese,  or Islamic school built in the 1750s. At the top of the hill and next to the citadel is the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum, with excellent displays of artifacts from 4,000 BC through regional costumes from the 18 th  and 19 th  centuries.  After walking through the fort, there will be time to wander around Akhaltsikhe’s  rabati , or old town, to see its multicultural architecture, including rare examples of traditional Georgian houses, or  darbazebi , scattered along the castle fortification walls. Overnight for one night in the Gino Wellness Rabath Hotel, located within the Old Town. (B/L/D)

Day 10 Cross into Armenia, Bronze Age Megalithic Avenue

An early departure takes us to the border. We say goodbye to our Georgia guide and cross into Armenia where we transfer to local vehicles. On the way to Gyumri, we will stop to walk through a field of Bronze Age standing stones near Harteshen village. Thought to date from 6,000 BC, parallel rows of standing stones, all inclined downhill, stretch almost half a mile across the hillside in regular formation. This magnificent Megalithic Avenue rivals those in Brittany. Continue to the town of Gyumri, dominated by Sev Ghul, a huge circular fortress built by the Russians in the 1830s on top of a Chalcolithic  tell , an ancient mound composed of layers of continual settlements. Overnight in the Nane Hotel in Gyumri. (B/L/D)

Day 11 Amberd Fortress, Hovhannavank, Saghmosavank

Our drive up Mt. Aragats, an extinct volcano and the tallest mountain in Armenia, takes us to Amberd, one of the impregnable fortresses of the Middle Ages. Amberd is protected by walls with inclined towers. Excavations have shown that the interior was lavishly adorned with carved decorations. In the eleventh century, a bathhouse was built outside the castle and is still visible along with the water supply system. Vahramasen Church, near the fort, was built in 1026 for Vahram Pahlavuni, prince of the Bagratuni kingdom of Ani. In the afternoon, see two outstanding examples of Armenian monastic architecture. The oldest part of Hovhannavank was begun at the beginning of the 4 th  century by St. Gregory the Enlightener. Adjoining the original church is the cruciform, domed Church of St. John dating from 1216. Featuring an altar decorated with frescoes, as well as unusual cantilevered staircases on its north and south sides, the entrance is through an impressive 13 th -century  gavit , or entry hall. Nearby Saghmosavank was a renowned center for calligraphy, and several manuscripts written and copied here have been preserved. Built by a princely family, the cross-winged domed structure contained a library. Drive on to Yerevan with dinner on our own this evening. Overnight in the Paris Hotel for three nights. (B/L)

Day 12 Echmiadzin Cathedral, Zvartnots Cathedral, Historical Museum of Armenia

This morning, drive to Vagharshapat and to Echmiadzin Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral, designated UNESCO World Heritage Monuments in 2000. These sanctuaries document the early establishment of Christianity in Armenia and the evolution of a unique Armenian ecclesiastical architecture. The Armenian church is cross-shaped with a dome over the central hall. Built 301-303 A.D., the Cathedral of Holy Echmiadzin is the most ancient Christian place of worship in Armenia. The Church of St. Hripsimeh is a perfect example of the cruciform plan and central cupola. The archaeological remains of Zvartnots, completed in 662 AD and destroyed by an earthquake in the tenth century, provide a unique example of Armenian architecture of the early Christian period.  In the afternoon, we return to Yerevan and the Historical Museum of Armenia, which contains a collection of 400,000 objects and is considered the national museum of Armenia. Dinner this evening will feature traditional Armenian folk dancing. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Garni Temple, Geghard Monastery

We begin today with the elegant Temple of Garni, a 1 st -century Hellenic temple. It is the only pagan shrine in Armenia to survive the country’s Christianization in 301AD. Overlooking the Goghi and Azat River Canyons, it is built on top of an earlier Urartian temple. Continue to Geghard Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, that contains a number of churches and tombs, most of which are cut into the rock. These structures epitomize the high-water mark of Armenian medieval architecture. Dinner is free to enjoy one of Yerevan’s exceptional restaurants. (B/L)

Day 14 Khor Virap, Areni Cave, Noravank Monastery

Today is filled with fascinating sites. Originally established in 642AD, Khor Virap is picturesquely located on the slopes of Mount Ararat, an imposing snow draped volcano and the national symbol for the Armenian people. The monastery is a holy site of the Armenian Apostolic Church and an important place for pilgrimage. St. Gregory the Illuminator, the man who brought Christianity to Armenia, was imprisoned here for 13 years before curing the king of a disease. The king then made Christianity the state religion of Armenia. Move on to Areni, a large cave where archaeologists have found cultural strata from the Neolithic, with burial sites dating back to 5000 – 4000BC, to late medieval times. Our final stop, the beautiful Noravank Monastery, contains several churches and civic buildings encircled by a wall. During the 12 th  century, Noravank was the residence of the Orbelians, an influential feudal family. Continue to Goris, a charming town with typical stone houses with arched windows and balconies on tree-lined avenues. The city is famous for its homemade fruit vodkas. Spend two nights in the simple, but charming Hotel Mirhav, surrounding by lovely gardens in the town of Goris. (B/L/D)

Day 15 Karahunj, Tatev Monastery

Our day begins at Karahunj, or Zorats Karer, a 7,500-year-old stone circle, which, according to some archaeologists, is a Middle-Bronze-Age necropolis that continued to be used into the Iron Age. After lunch, drive to the village of Halidzor where we board Tatever Cable Car, the longest reversible cableway in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. Our short, but scenic journey takes us 1000 feet above the Vorotan River to the promontory where Tatev Monastery is located. Constructed in the 9 th  century on the site of a pagan shrine, the Tatev bishopric was a feudal organization that in the 9 th  through the 11 th  century owned 47 villages and received tithes from 677 other villages.  In the 11 th  century, Tatev hosted around 1,000 monks and a large number of artisans and was a renowned university. Today, only a few monks live here. Return to Goris for the night. (B/L/D)

Day 16 Noraduz, Selim Caravanserai

Our first stop is Noraduz, a medieval cemetery with a large number of early  khachkars . Also called a cross stone, some of these stelae date back to the 10 th century. The graveyard is spread over 20 acres with almost 1000 of these memorial stones, most displaying a cross along with unique ornamentation including scenes of weddings and farm life. We then move on to Selim Caravanserai, built in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian to shelter travelers and their herds. This ancient lodge was constructed of blocks of basalt divided into three sections, and is covered with a gabled stone shingle roof that rests on three arches. Overnight in the 3-star Tufenkian Avan Hotel in the village of Dzoraget. (B/L/D)

Day 17 Sanahin Monastery, Haghpat Monastery

This morning we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Sanahin and Haghpat, two Byzantine monasteries and important centers of learning in the 10 th  to 13 th  century. Over three centuries more than twenty various churches and chapels and other monumental structures were constructed within the complexes. They are representations of the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture, whose unique style developed from a blending of elements of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian region. After lunch, drive back into Georgia and to Tbilisi and overnight at the 5-star Marriott Hotel. (B/L/D)

Travel in This Part of the World

This tour is designed for flexible, energetic people who like to be active, have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. We have designed this trip to be as comfortable as possible, while also aiming to visit some remote or unique sites that other companies do not attempt to include in their itineraries. There may be days where we have very long drives and the conditions of the roads may vary. Hotels and transportation in some remote areas may not be up to western standards. There may be times when no bellhops are available; please pack with the understanding that you need to be able to handle your own luggage at times. At times we may be walking over uneven trails for a mile or more; hiking boots are strongly recommended. Not every meal will not be haute cuisine and several lunches may be picnics or box lunches. By maintaining a flexible attitude we will soon be captivated by the beauty of the natural scenery, the hospitality of the local people, and the fascinating sites we will see. Your flexibility and patience will be appreciated.

Itinerary Changes

Changes in our itinerary, accommodations, and transportation schedules may occur. While we are committed to keeping as close to the published details as possible, sometimes it is simply not possible. Weather events, government affairs, or other factors out of our control sometimes come into play. A good book to read as well as patience, flexible attitude, and a sense of humor are essential.

Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. This region, lying at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is packed with the legends of the Golden Fleece, stunning scenery and warm and hospitable people, with a flourishing food and wine scene.

It also, amazingly, remains relatively unknown even to many experienced travellers and this is the perfect trip for those wanting a diverse experience in an often overlooked part of our world.

Hearty, traditional lunches and dinners are available at the guesthouse, however, you are only a short stroll to the cobbled- stone streets, shops and restaurants of the town for further options.

The popular restaurant serves international cuisine and a selection of local specialities, and guests can also enjoy a cold or hot drink with Sheki halva in the garden grounds.

Kviria Hotel, Telavi

With just 14 rooms, Hotel Kviria prides itself on its contemporary style, using old Georgian brick on the building exterior & in its wine-cellar and soft colours throughout the hotel’s interior. The hotel has rooftop solar panels, an outdoor heated pool and makes its own wines under the name “Matisi”, which guests can enjoy in the wine bar.

Gori Inn is an excellent mid-range hotel recently added to Gori's collection, offering extensive facilities and modern amenities. There are a range of rooms and suites which are spacious and comfortable, some with balconies. Guests can also enjoy a well-equipped fitness room and there is a well-sized indoor swimming pool, as well as a spa with multiple treatments available and a sauna and hammam. Intourist Kazbegi, Stepantsminda

Located in Stepantsminda, the 4-star Intourist Kazbegi provides accommodation with a garden, two bars, a restaurant, a terrace, a library and wi-fi throughout. The hotel is of historical importance, first operating 60 years ago as part of the “Intourist” chain before closing in the 1990s due to the political situation in the country. In 2021, the hotel was given a new lease of life, upgrading all facilities for the modern traveller, whilst keeping its a historical name and appearance. The wooden facade blends flawlessly with the beautiful forest scenery, and the rooms offer a beautiful panoramic view overlooking the Kazbegi mountains. Rooms are well-equipped with a desk, a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom, bed linen and towels, as well as a safety deposit box, and some offer a balcony whilst others come with garden views.

Tufenkian Old Dilijan Complex, Dilijan

Close to the centre of Dilijan, the Tufenkian is a renovated stone complex located directly on historical Sharambeyan Street. The eight rooms are simple and modern but with very traditional features, natural colours and extra comforts such as kettles and satellite television. Breakfast is served in the attached Haykanoush restaurant which also specialises in rich Western Armenian cuisine for lunches and dinner. The complex around the hotel has a number of small workshops which specialise in traditional Armenian crafts such as carpets, wood carvings, ceramics and furniture, as well as a bakery and delightful souvenir shops all promoting local handicrafts. The English speaking staff are helpful and welcoming.

Mirhav Hotel, Goris

Its nineteen rooms are simply but stylishly furnished with local carpets and furniture. All are a good size with an en-suite shower room, and some have balconies overlooking the tree lined streets of Goris. The hotel has its own restaurant with a large pleasant garden overlooking the river and it is centrally located for nearby amenities. It comes recommended as one of the best hotels in the region.

Opera Suite Hotel, Yerevan

The hotel is divided into Deluxe Suite, Suite, Executive Suite and Royal Suite separated into smoking and non-smoking suites. Responsible travel.

With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit. When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.  Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Filtered Water Bottles | Wild Frontiers (wildfrontierstravel.com)

Getting There

If you would like us to send you a quote for the suggested tour flights or on any alternative flight that may suit you better, please let us know, noting that for our US clients, we will most likely refer you to one of our preferred partners. For this trip our suggested flights from the UK (subject to change) are shown below.

If you wish to arrange your own flights you are completely free to do so and in this case we can arrange any transfers or supplementary accommodation that you may require. However please note that if you are planning on making your own flight arrangements, we recommend that you first check with us to see if the trip is guaranteed. We then suggest that you purchase flights that are flexible and ideally refundable as due to the nature of adventure travel, itineraries and destination accessibility can change at any time. For more information, please refer to our booking conditions.

Visas are necessary for many of the destinations we travel to and while we aim to provide you with the most up-to-date information, requirements frequently change and as such for the latest advice we advise that you check with the relevant embassies or contact a reputable visa agency. More details can be found here -  https://www.wildfrontierstravel.com/visa

For this tour, UK passport holders currently require a visa for Azerbaijan but not for Georgia or Armenia. Passports should ideally be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the end of your tour.

Non-UK passport holders or non-UK residents should contact the relevant embassies for individual requirements. VACCINATIONS & ADDITIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers to Azerbaijan, Georgia or Armenia.

For all destinations, please make sure you are up-to-date with any standard vaccinations (e.g. MMR, Hepatitis A, Tetanus) as recommended by your local health care provider.  For the most up-to-date information on all vaccination requirements and the most suitable anti-malarial tablets, we strongly suggest that you seek advice from your local travel centre or consult an official travel health website such as www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or www.travelhealthpro.org.uk Covid Testing : No mandatory testing is currently required for vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers. If necessary further details will be sent out to you upon booking, however ensuring that correct and valid visas & vaccinations are obtained remains the sole responsibility of the client.

If you have more time available, why not arrive early to adjust to a new time zone or just to get a feel for the country before your tour starts? Alternatively, you might choose to allow a few extra days after the tour to relax or to undertake some further exploration. The choice is completely yours and we can usually arrange anything from simply additional accommodation and transfers to full tailor-made itineraries*. Please contact the office for more details and to discuss your requirements.

*Please note bespoke, tailor-made itineraries need to be a minimum of 7 days and we can only offer them in countries where we have a tailor-made expert

Governmental Travel Advice

Many governments issue advice which highlights potential hazards their citizens might experience when travelling abroad. We strongly suggest you refer to your country’s particular advisory site before booking and contact us if you have any queries or concerns. Click to follow links to the advice of the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or the US State Department . Non-UK citizens should consult the travel advice of their respective governments.

Key Information

The weather conditions can be extremely varied (even within the course of a day!). The Greater Caucasus Range moderates local climate by serving as a barrier against cold air from the north and the relatively small territory covers different climatic zones, which are determined by distance from the Black Sea and by altitude. The climatic zones range from humid subtropical to snow and glaciers.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. There will be some long journeys in the vehicles on the tour, so please be prepared for this.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

Armenia & Georgia

Armenia & Georgia

Between Europe and Asia, the Caspian and the Black Sea, and on the ancient Silk Roads and the Scythian invasion routes stand the republics — ancient kingdoms — of Armenia and Georgia. Until recently cut off by the Iron Curtain, these warm, hospitable countries are but little known to western travellers, yet their names conjure up images of trade and hospitality, the Greek myths of Prometheus, Medea and the Golden Fleece.

Their location between great civilisations guaranteed them a pivotal role in world history. Yet, their varied landscapes are reason enough to visit — Europe’s highest mountains, fertile plains, semi-tropical coastlands and arid steppes are the backdrop to our travels.

Your words, not ours.

Transcaucasus trails I recently went on the ‘Walking The Transcaucasian Trail Armenia’ tour and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The amazing landscapes and rich culture of Armenia were highlighted in this hiking adventure. Our guide Vahag, was knowledgeable and passionate about the country, which made the tour even more enjoyable. I took this tour with my friends and by the help of Vahag we shortened the tour duration into 5 days trying not to miss the most important places for hiking. The hikes were challenging but cool, offering stunning views of the mountains and valleys. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who loves hiking and wants to explore Armenia. April 26, 2023

Luca

This tour was one of the most amazing trips I’ve ever had. It was my second trip to Armenia (first one was for my business) and this time I came with my family and we had a great time in both Armenia and Georgia. Riding the Tatev cable car was especially thrilling, and the view of Mount Kazbek was breathtaking. However, the highlight of this tour was the impressive Prometheus. I highly recommend this tour! Thank You!

Enjoyable trip The tour was good, I enjoyed it fully. Though I took it solo and I got new acquaintances in our small group of 5. The guide Ani was really good and the places I visited were fascinating. Thank you Rima for all your support and quick answers to my messages.

The way to know a small country like Armenia This was my first trip after the pandemic, so I booked a tour to be in nature, out from buildings, museums etc, and I was not wrong. I travelled to Armenia in October 2022 and based on the reviews and thorough feedback, took a Hiking trip to Armenia. I booked a guaranteed date trip as I didn’t want to travel alone but rather be in a small group. I was happy to share a room with Cheryll from the UK. There were 5 of us from NZ, The Netherlands and The UK. A full itinerary, but a relaxing pace and beautiful hotels (don’t really think you need to upgrade unless you are terribly choosy!) A satisfying mix of history, culture, landscape and wildlife and we appreciated the hikes. If you feel comfortable in 18-23 degrees C, do book tour in fall as the sceneries look just amazing. Lastiver waterfall trail was the absolute highlight, as the hike goes through forest and trees are of hundred colours from green to yellow, orange, fair red, purple. Guide Arthur was friendly and funny with a lot of jokes. Kaghni Hotel in Dsegh village provides outstanding wild views. Thanks Cascade Travel, especially Nune for this amazing trip, always know you have a friend in NZ :).

Great small group tour

I was looking for a guaranteed group tour to Armenia and checked a couple of UK travel websites, which do not guarantee that the tour will be organised on all the dates they published on the website. As I wanted to travel in the second half of October I couldn’t find an appropriate company, so I started to check local ones and chose Cascade Travel based ont he recommendation rankings and reviews, too. We booked a small group tour to Armenia and then it turned out some people in our group would travel to Georgia the day we were close to the Georgian border. We started in a group of 10 and ended up 4. It was a lot of fun and very comfortable to travel in a group especially when the group members are good to hang out with in the evenings. Yeghevnut hotel in Goris has a nice terrace to sit in the evening. In Kaghni hotel we organised farewell dinner with all group members, those who would continue the next day tour to Georgia. There are a couple of small issues to mention, the cable car to Tatev Monastery was overcrowded and if you are not close to the window you are risking to see nothing when passing the canyon, which is impressive. Berlin Art Hotel in Gyumri is located very close to the hospital but it is still in the city centre, freshly renovated and has fine breakfast. We travelled in a 20 seater minibus but when some part of group continued to Georgia our car was changed to a smaller 6 seater one which was ok for 4 of us but we didn’t expect that. Overall no specific concerns we are satisfied with the tour.

More than expected

We had a thoroughly enjoyable varied trip, every detail was well thought out and designed to give us a good insight of local culture, cuisine and beverages. We visited the wine factory Voskevaz which was impressive due to its architecture built in the old castle style. Ararat Brandy is a real pride for Armenia as the guide told Churchill was fond of Armenian Brandy produced in this factory. We had a couple of cooking classes, which we truly loved. The duduk play in an underground man made cave hall was touching, this is the sweetest and saddest musical instrument I have ever heard. Guys in Cascade travel did everything possible to make us comfortable, we were unsatisfied with the vehicle, the air conditioning was working bad and ended up broken on the third day when we had an overnight stay 150 km away from Yerevan. We connected to the office and unexpectedly they were responsive at 10 pm. Morning our car was changed to, so we continued the trip with an air conditioned car, otherwise it would be terrible as we travelled in August and in some regions we had almost 37 degrees C. Guys are real professionals in what they do and really work hard to get us satisfied. The thorough reviews stand for their hard work.

We booked a family trip to Armenia and Georgia, my mother was with us and she was 83 and felt bad from long drives and elevation changes. I wish I could check the itinerary better to see such high altitudes and long drives. My agent from Cascade travel should have notified us. If we were without mom we would have a better time.

tours of armenia and georgia

A well designed private tour Armenia and Georgia with very reasonable price

Cascade travel planned and organised a wonderful 10 day tour of Armenia and Georgia. We customised the tour to our preferences, to take out some monasteries and visit more nature related places. We discussed and came into the final program through a couple of emails. Nune did everything fast and price was very reasonable compared to a couple of other companies we communicated with. We really were impressed with the responsiveness and quickness of Nune, who didn’t miss any single detail in my emails. She surprised us with a birthday cake in a regional hotel. That day was my friend’s birthday and they organised a cake though guide Anna, who is a funny knowledgeable lady, University professor who freelanced as a guide. The Georgian part was organised with the same care but of course service level is different in Armenia and Georgia. Georgians are more relaxed and maybe less caring, they talk too loud and very often it feels like they fight but from the smile we understood that they just used to talk loudly. We would advise to travel to Armenia and Georgia for sure.

Wine and food of Caucasus

Our experience during the gastro tour was unusual with lots of good vibes. We travelled in September 2022. We tried lots of tasty traditional dishes like tolma, ghapama which is a pumpkin filled with rice, dry fruits, honey and nuts and of course Georgian dumplings called khinkali. We didn’t expect to taste such delicious local wines. There is a lot to see in both countries. The program was well balanced, we saw a lot and managed to enjoy local restaurants and cafes. I would definitely recommend Cascade Travel as the trip was like a visit to friends, everything was smoothly organised.

I did this tour in September 2022 and would highly recommend it. The reflected reviews were very supporting and helped to choose the correct agent. The agency organized it in a way that you will not be feeling overwhelmed with difficult trails, though the last days hike to Aragats Southern peak is not that easy. Anyway I liked it much. Its Northern peak is the highest point of country and though we hiked to the Southern still views were just breathtaking. Overall tour is well balanced and a good thing that all lunch boxes are cared for and no hustle with that. Diners we offered at the hotels quite cheap and tasty.

Food and wine as a great way to experience countries

This is a fantastic way to experience and compare the cuisine, landscape and culture of 2 different countries in Caucasus. Wines were delicious both in Armenia and Georgia. Cooking classes were a lot of fun and the most enjoyable parts of the tour. We travelled in September and were lucky enough to participate in grape harvest randomly on the road in Areni village. We saw the vineyards and asked the driver to stop the car. When we got to the vineyards, we were invited to participate in the harvest process. Areni, the local endemic sort of grapes a lot of local wines are made from, is sour for eating. True enjoyable stop was Tsaghkunq Guesthouse, where chef Yura showed how he makes local fish from Lake Sevan. Another highlight of the trip is Alazani valley, Georgian wine region. We made Georgian dumplings Khinkali and Khachapuri (dough and cheese cookies) in Georgia. Just a thing, be prepared to gain a couple of kilos during this trip because it is not possible to eat the portion you used to do :). This was an amazing trip and the countries’ cuisine tell one more than a long history and sometimes boring museums.

This was our first time booking a tour with Cascade travel, and next year we plan to travel to Armenia with them again. It was quite simply outstanding – from start to finish. We took a guaranteed trip to Georgia September 2022. Kazbegi was the most wonderful day of this tour, the road was amazing. Prometheus cave was wonderful as well, Tbilisi is a nice city for walks and evening dining, drinking.

Merilyn

Great organization, no concerns. Just read the reviews before travelling.

Our trip through Armenia and Georgia was organized with great care by Nune from Cascade Travel. We enjoyed the days and the diverse impressions very much and were taken care of very thoughtfully by our drivers in both countries, though Georgians drive like crazy, Irakli was calm and didn’t pay attention to other drivers tricks and fast driving. We can highly recommend Cascade travel without any reservations!

Jocelyn Moore

I would highly recommend booking your trip to Armenia and Georgia with Cascade Travel. The tour managers are really good with great customer care, Nune, the founder, personally was my contact person. My emails were responded quickly. I travelled with my wife who’s vegetarian, and all the restaurants had a note to have veggie food for her. When passing the border our driver drove us to the Georgian side, though there were some travelers passing the approximately 200 m bridge by foot. No kind of problem emerged during the tour and I just simply wondered if something more could be done for us.

To say that we left Armenia satisfied to say nothing! Armenia is so small country but absolutely amazing and different. We did rock climbing, caving, kayaking, hiking. The terrain changes so quickly, just a couple of kilometers drive brought us to totally different place and views. Antuan our guide – driver was maybe the best guide we have every had during 10 years of traveling. Hotels were well chosen, Tufenkian at lake Sevan was just amazing with an open air heated pool. Make sure you have hat and sun protection cream as Lake Sevan where you do kayak ride is almost 2000 m above sea and it is very easy to get burnt, also Mount Aragats is almost 4000 m., long sleeve jacket is needed. The trip was absolutely stunning thank you Cascade travel and especially Antuan.

Beautiful trekking! Geghama mountains are incredible, with lakes, age-old dragon stones, green meadows and absolute silence. The area is not crowded right when you start hiking from Sevaberd village to the route end. A few hikers can be met. All was organized well, make sure to take your own sleeping bag, the company provides other camping gear, tents, mats. Hot dinner and tea is provided in the evening. The logistics team takes everything, all you need to carry is a raincoat, water and warm jacket. Aragats mount is amazing, seeing the inside of the volcano crater and the other side of the mountain is fantastic. Thanks guys for organizing this trip.

Nice trip to unknown world

I first read about these countries on Lonely Planet and never would think they are this worth to see. I found a small group tour which I booked as they offered a discount and there was a possibility to find a travel mate and share a room with. Patrick from Canada was my roommate but we became good friends and decided to travel together further. Countries are really nice, the food is very tasty, and there are lost of excellent cafes, bars and pubs in both capitals. Pity this company organizes tours only in Armenia and Georgia otherwise I would use them again, so highly recommended.

We booked this tour private for our family to Armenia with some changes. We were traveling with kids who would get bored with sightseeing only. So we added a zipline, river rafting and paddle-boarding activities in the tour. The last one paddle-boarding was just amazing. we rode boards in Azat reservoir, very close to Garni temple, it was evening time and sunset was astonishing, all surrounding hills and rocks where red as the water itself. Karen, the instructor is very skillful and sweet guy, we simply enjoyed a couple of hours ride. This was definitely the highlight of the tour.

The week was absolutely amazing and perfect from start to finish. We had a great group mixed from US, Australia and Canada. Every day hike was absolutely different from each other, from red rock canyon to a forest lake and waterfall, terrain was absolutely amazing and thanks to its difference we didn’t get tired as every day we were amazed by fantastic landscape. The accommodation was chosen thoroughly, we stayed in a family run guesthouse in Yegeghnadzor, the owner was also a winemaker, who joined us for the dinner. We tasted a couple of wines and enjoyed an evening chat with Armen. Our guide Arthur was very knowledgeable not only in hiking trails but also told us a lot about the country. We were especially interested in how the country lives nowadays, taxes, labour market etc. I would definitely recommend Cascade travel as we had the most hustle free travel in the last 10 years.

A young but promising company

When I started the research of an agency to travel to Armenia and Georgia I came up with the Cascade travel website. Everything was clear and well described but I couldn’t find any information online besides their web page. When I went into details I saw the founder Nune led another agency for 8 years so understood she is professional in her job and the communication with her showed that. I chose this agency and was not mistaken. I booked Armenia Georgia tour for May. Both countries are very beautiful, nature was just blooming in flowers and we even experienced snow in Stepantsminda when travelling to Gergeti Trinity Church. Tour itinerary is balanced, drives are not too long, around 3 hours with stops and it doesn’t feel that long as the views are amazing. Every day we asked about several photo stops and were not refused. Sites are interesting, landscapes leave speechless, food is amazing. What I saw exceeded my expectations, these small countries are worth seeing.

A true Armenian experience! This trip was an outstanding experience as well as a great value. For me it was the perfect combination of engaging conversations, historic and cultural background and endless mountains cascading in the horizon. We did and saw a lot, but had time to explore on our own as well as just relax. The variety of the itinerary was also a plus – visiting age-old monasteries, small towns and remote rural areas. I was surprised to see a small cheese farm, producing delicate cheeses aged in wine and brandy. Hikes were moderate and each day was absolutely different from the previous. We walked along the water reservoir and saw the monastery which is half a year old and covered with water. Aragats southern peak was also an impressive hike. Clean, comfortable, and cosy hotels definitely added value to our trip. Staff everywhere was very friendly, true Armenian style. I read a lot about Armenian hospitality before travelling but never thought people would be this open. Overall Armenia is a heaven for hikers and we were happy enough to choose a right travel agency, to really enjoy and not worry about anything. Cascade travel is highly recommended.

Everything was well organized, thank you guys for that quick and simple booking process and meeting me and my girlfriend with flowers at the airport as I wrote our arrival day was her birthday. That was a nice surprise.

Good organised private tour to Georgia

I found the Cascade Travel website and along with other companies contacted them for a private tour to Georgia in early May 2022. It was an easy and clear booking process with quick response and information from the staff. I did very little prepayment 100 EUR per person, and full amount we paid on the spot, which made us feel comfortable, besides they guarantee refund of prepayment if something happens and we refuse to travel. On the day, it was a perfect start with an airport meeting with a polite driver and clean comfortable car. We met Keti, our guide. She was very knowledgeable, polite and helpful. This trip was good organised.

I am happy to be the first to write a customer review for this agency. Whether this trip is outstanding or usually good depends on your expectations. You will definitely not see the Eiffel Tower or BigBen but there are lots of historical and cultural sites along with absolutely breathtaking landscapes. Georgian Military Highway was an amazing drive on the edge of a deep bottomless canyon. We were lucky enough to see Mount Kazbek, which left us speechless. Armenia amazed us as well. Selim pass is very impressive, one of the highest in the region, Lake Sevan. Both capitals are lovely and very different, Yerevan with more canonical streets, with pink buildings, Tbilisi is in the opposite, colourful buildings are scattered on the hills along the river Kura. Both local guides were kind and knowledgeable, we experienced truly local homemade food, met winemakers, lavash bread bakers and farmers. The trip was absolutely flawless thanks to our local tour operator Cascade Travel.
