It’s also nice to know that while you might not be doing heavy weighted movements today, you can progress into it over time. 

Moreover, it comes with 3 levels of width adjustments, and 6 levels of height adjustments.  This makes the Yoleo Portable Dip Station the most customizable option out of all the products we reviewed. 

This is great if you have different people using the dip bar around your house.

In terms of portability, the feature I liked the most was the ability to put the handles together for easier storage.  This made it fit into tighter spaces in my closet, which is where I store my dip bar between workouts.

As well, because the height of the dip bar is customizable, you can reduce the overall size of the equipment making it easier to tuck away into small corners of your house.

This Dip fitness bar here from AmazonBasics is my budget pick. Although there are some dip bars that are quite cheaper than this one, I don’t recommend that you go any lower with the price because the options available are quite flimsy and won’t deliver.

It’s also well optimized for portability, weighing less than 22 lbs. Although the product claims that it can handle up to 660 lbs, I heavily doubt that because of the thin design and the small pinholes, especially with the slant design.

However, it seems to support up to 350 lbs just fine, which is what I tested it up to, as long as you keep your hands centered and train on a carpet for stability.

Due to it being pretty light and maneuverable, I’d say Amazon did a great job building a portable dip bar.  It’s not my favorite, but it’s good enough for anyone who is price-conscious.

I’ve tried various dip stations, but the AmazonBasics Dip Fitness Bar holds a special place in my routine. The first time I used it, the stability even at high intensity, was noticeable. With a 660 lbs limit, wobbles were a thing of the past, instilling confidence in every dip and lift.

You’re unlikely to get anywhere near the 600 lbs limit, which should reduce the chances of wobbles.

I also liked that the thick rubber feet helped avoid slipping even on smooth surfaces.

Who it’s for: The conservative buyer looking for a good dip bar on a budget.

  • Cheaper than similar stations.
  • Angled grip with generous range.
  • Tall enough for most people.
  • Solid, wide handles.
  • The extra tall might find it too low (I’d say anyone over 6.2).
  • The assembly instructions should be more comprehensive (as should the tools included) .

The Xmark 500 is the best dip station overall because it nails all the basics…and does it on a budget.

These are the three key points:

  • It’s tall and wide enough for 90% of people.
  • It’s compact yet stable.
  • It features oversized grips.

And it does it all for much less money (like 2-3 times less) than its main competitor – the BodySolid GDIP59 .

I know this station

The Xmark 500 comes up in every conversation about dip bars I’ve ever had.

(and I’ve had hundreds of those over the years…)

That’s how I know it cost more a year ago than it does today…at the time of writing the first version of this guide.

In those terms, it’s a one-in-a-thousand exception.

I’m not sure what’s going on there, nor do I care.

For you, the buyer, two things are important:

  • It’s great value.
  • That value doesn’t come at the cost of quality. I’ve seen no changes in the manufacturing practices or materials over the years.

Let’s get back to the 3 points above, unpack and put them in context.

It’s the only station here where the bars angle inward.

And it works. It’s shoulder-friendly, elbow-friendly and performance-friendly.

The width range is 21 to 23, which will be good enough for most people.

The bars are just under 40 inches high.

The extra tall (6.2+) might find it undersized for doing dips with fully extended legs, and those on the shorter side might find it too tall.

But that’s true for any fixed-height station.

The only better approach to engineering the height is an adjustable design.

And any adjustment means that some part of the frame moves. That means it can never be as stable as a fixed, welded station.

And adjustable dip bars typically cost more.

Finally, the dip bars with adjustable height (almost) always have fixed handle distance.

Handle distance > Height

Because height is rarely a deal-breaker, unlike fixed parallel handles.

Bottom line

Xmark 500 will be the conservative choice of a smart buyer. It’s not flashy, yet gets all the key points right for little money.

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a top-tier dip station and has the budget for it.

  • Premium build – steel, powder coat, welds, bars.
  • Handles angled outwards (width range 19-21”) .
  • Oversized bars with great padding.
  • Bigger than most stations.
  • Handles might be too close for the tall and lanky (anyone over 6.1) .

Body-Solid is the best dip station for you if the price is not a decision point.

“But it looks the same as the XMark ?”

It might look the same, but it’s not.

When you get close and “personal” with it, you’ll realize it’s superior in a few small ways that add up to a premium experience.

Whether that premium vibe is worth two or three times more is a different story.

So what’s different about it?

A few things stand out compared to XMark and Titan :

  • The welds are cleaner and more precise.
  • The handles are more robust, and the rubber padding is better…I’d describe it as commercial-like.
  • It’s more compact at the top yet more stable at the base (bigger footprint) .

If you’re a no-compromise buyer looking for a dip station that’s gonna last a lifetime (and if you’re not over 6.1) , get the GDIP69.

3 – Best rack-mounted dip bars – One 2×3 and Pro 3×3 Dip rack-mounted dip stations by PRX Performance

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for rack-mounted dip bars and has a 2×3 or 3×3 rack with ⅝ “ holes.

  • ⅝” pin works with most racks.
  • Premium construction and finish.
  • Thick handles.
  • Space saving (wall storage available as an add-on) .
  • Doesn’t work with non-standard pin-holes.

The two US-made stations from PRX won the rack-mounted category in a landslide.

  • PRX One for 2×3 racks
  • PRX Pro for 3×3 racks

The four main reasons for the win are:

  • Absolute stability with zero wobble.
  • Compatibility with most racks.
  • The coating – grippy but not overly aggressive.
  • The ease of (dis) assembly and storing.

How it compared to Rogue rack-mounted stations

The obvious competitor to the PRX station is the Rogue Matador Series.

Two things stand on the side of PRX in this face-off.

  • How securely it mounts.
  • The storage option.

Now, I am splitting hairs here but it’s all about finding the absolute best.To do that, you have to do some hair-splitting .

Stability for long-term use – i.e. if you’re keeping the bars on the rack

I’m not a fan of the pin-only mounting of Rogue Matador.

I always had a feeling that it might wobble out.

It’s not likely to happen; it’s just a feeling I get…

In other words, if the bars are staying put, fixing them to the rack is the better solution.

PRX units do that.

Storing if you’re not keeping it on the rack

PRX units cost slightly more than Rogue but that’s a moot point.

Here’s why…

On the PRX units, the storage is about 20 bucks, and Rogue’s is 40.

In other words, the cost evens out if you include the wall storage.

Compared to the Rogue Matador – the PRX One and PRO cost a bit more for bars only (and about the same with the storage) .

They have a slight edge because you can fix them onto the rack and eliminate all wobble.

4 – Best cheap dip bars – Titan Dip Stand

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for a decent dip station on the cheap.

  • Fixed handle distance.
  • Handle padding isn’t great – both size and material-wise.
  • Sub-par attention to detail – welds and coating.

The Titan dip stand is the most you can “cheap out” and still get a decent freestanding station.

The one major difference compared to the Xmark and Body-Solid is the fixed parallel bars.

At 24.5 inches distance, these might be too far apart for anyone with a smaller frame.

If the spacing works for you, this Titan is a good way to save a pretty penny. At the time of completing this guide, it cost almost 4 times less than the Body-Solid.

5 – Best dip bars for Calisthenics – Dripex station

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for an adjustable dip station for calisthenics.

  • Adjustable width and height.
  • Thick frame and high weight capacity (1,100 lbs) .
  • You’ll probably see some twisting in the frame with prolonged use.
  • The bars should be thicker (not accurately represented in the listing images) .

The Dripex station is our top pick for calisthenics because of the thick frame, which translates to stability and high capacity.

Stands out in a sea of similars

Chinese-made stations that look something like this are a dime a dozen on Amazon.

And this Dripex isn’t the most popular one.

Not even close…

The only way to separate the wheat from the chaff is the weight capacity.

The most popular stations of this type have a weight capacity of 300-450 lbs, which is 2-3 times lower than this Dripex.

The Dripex bar is cheap; it adjusts in width and height and has a whooping 1,100-lbs capacity. You can’t ask for more in this price range.

6 – Best dip bars for small spaces – Fringe wall-mount dip station

Who it’s for: Anyone looking to squeeze the most out of the limited home gym space and still get good dip bars.

  • Space-saving – mounts onto a wall and folds in on itself.
  • Locks in place.
  • Good spacing (21-25 inches width) .
  • High weight capacity.
  • You might see some wobble (more than with fully welded rack-mounted stations) .
  • The joint is the “weak” link.

If a rack-mounted station gets in the way or you just don’t like the look, your best bet is a wall-mounted unit.

In the category, this Fringe stands as the undisputed king of the hill.

  • It gets the spacing right.
  • It’s beefy (higher weight capacity than any freestanding or rack-mounted station we’ve looked at so far) .
  • The folding mechanism works smoothly.

Little to no competition in the category

For some reason (probably demand) , there’s not much competition among the wall-mounted units.

I’ll illustrate that in two points:

  • Bars that are as good (like Bulldog or DipStands) cost 50-100% more.
  • Bars in this price range are discounted or often out of stock (like Valor) .

It’s slim picking in the wall-mounted category because the demand isn’t there. If it works for your space, this Fringe has no real competition.

7 – Best dip station for beginners and controlled progress – Titan plate-loaded dip machine

Who it’s for: For anyone looking to slowly build dip strength.

  • Controlled progress.
  • Beginner-friendly.
  • You need extra space for loading/unloading plates.
  • Handles might be too wide apart for some.
  • Costs more than a classic station.

The Titan plate-loaded machine is the best dip station for beginners, controlled progress, and people with shoulder injuries.

Not too cool, but effective

I’m stressing “controlled progress” because it’s a great tool for advanced athletes to break through plateaus.

It might not look as cool as hanging a massive chain around your neck for weighted dips.

It’s certainly safer and less taxing on the shoulder.

(especially if you’re into doing dips to failure).

Compared to other assisted machines

There are better-seated stations for dips, and there are cheaper ones.

There is none with a better balance between value, functionality and quality.

For example, a top-tier station with selectorized weight will cost you 5-10 times more.

My absolute favorite is the Legend Fitness 6010, which currently costs 912% more than this Titan.

You read that right.

If you’re looking to slowly progress to your first full dip, break through plateaus, or do dip supersets, this Titan is THE way to do it on a  budget.

8 – Best portable dip bars – GoBeast stand

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for a dip stand that packs light and small.

  • Versatile beyond dips – pull-ups and push-ups.
  • Simple to put together and disassemble.
  • Packs down small and light enough to be portable.
  • Not as stable as classic stations.
  • Fixed handles width and height.
  • Lower weight capacity than other types.

What’s this thing doing on the list of “best dip bars?”

I can almost hear you thinking it…

Well, it’s the only dip bar type that’s truly portable.

You’ll see units like Drpex brag about the easy setup and adjustments.

But here’s the reality…

On any station with 500+ lbs capacity, changing the settings, heights and widths is a pain in the you-know-what .

You’ll do it once, twice, maybe five times…then it gets old, and you choose one setting to rule them all.

That also doubles for packing the whole thing and taking it with you.

Enter this silly thing

It might wobble and the paint might chip.

But it’s a great excuse to get some alone time on those weekends with the inlaws.

This GoBeast stand is not made to be your primary dip station, especially if you’re a serious lifter.

It’s made to play that role on the go and when you don’t have a dedicated space for dips.

And it does that job with gusto…

Who it’s for: Anyone worried about getting the height right on fixed stations.

  • Adjustable height – 10-inch range.
  • Cheaper than most similar stations.
  • Weight capacity on par with more expensive units.
  • Color choices.
  • Fixed width – with around 25 inches between bars, it’ll be too wide for some.
  • Foam handles.

Summary – the good, the bad, and the ugly

This BalanceFrom is one of THE most popular dip stands in existence…and with good reason.

It’s cheap, looks cool, and you can adjust the height.

The build quality and finishes are decent for the price, but nothing to write home about.

The handles are short, parallel and fixed.

Therein lies the main problem.

I measured the distance between the handles to be around 25 inches.

If your shoulders are narrower than, say, 22 inches, this will likely be too wide for comfort.

In this scenario,  a lot of your strength will “dissipate” on stabilization rather than pushing up.

This is an awesome dip station for anyone with above-average shoulder width. It solves the bar-height problem without breaking the bank.

And it can be yellow or red.

Buyer’s guide to choosing a good dip bar for killer upper body workouts

Below is a detailed guide on choosing the best dip bars for your needs.

I’ll keep it super practical.

The goal is to help you recognize which station fits the bill instead of boring you with theory.

For the sake of simplicity, I’ve grouped all factors into 9.

1 – Type of dip bar/station

The first (and the most important) decision in choosing your next dip station is deciding between the types.

My role is to simplify the choice by doing two things:

  • Decluttering – boiling down all dip-station types to as few as possible (without any falling through the cracks). This will mean some lumping, mixing, and matching… and I’m Ok with that if it leads to clarity.
  • Point out the specific benefits of each type . This should help you pinpoint what’s best for your home gym and goals.

2 – Position – distance and angle between the dip bars

There’s a lot of hoopla about the angled bars.

Let’s get that sorted out first.

The angled bars aren’t a miraculous concept designed to target the triceps over the chest or vice versa

Some bars are angled for spacing reasons – so you can choose the distance that creates the least stress in your joint.

If I was nitpicking

It’s fair to say that positioning for optimal triceps activation is easier on parallel bars.

You could also say that angled bars are more biomechanically accurate because the shoulder joint is facing forward.

I’m not gonna do that…

For two reasons:

  • The angle is slight and makes minimal to no difference.
  • It might needlessly confuse you.

Again, it’s all about the distance…

To simplify, go with these 2 rules of thumb:

  • Choose fixed parallel dip bars only when you’re sure the width is right for you (more on that in a second) .
  • Choose a tapered dip bar (or an adjustable parallel) if you’re unsure about the distance.

How far apart should dip bars be?

Dip bars should be slightly wider than your shoulders. Choose bars that give you some leeway on both ends of that range, like the XMark 500 .

That minimizes shoulder injury risk and allows all your effort to go into pushing up (instead of stabilization) .

Bonus tip: Measure the distance between the tip of your elbow to the fingertips of your open palm.

Add 1-2 inches. That’s your ballpark bar distance – the sweet spot that will be effective for upper-body workouts.

It’s crucial for shoulder safety, especially if you’re using more than your body weight on dips.

3 – Thickness of dip bars

Avoid thin bars – that’s my #1 tip on thickness.

Go for the bars measuring 1.5-2 inches in diameter.

Because a thicker bar will distribute pressure better (not dig into your palms) , which directly translates to three things:

  • More weight.
  • Lessened wrist-injury risk.

That’s especially important on weighted and failure sets.

The over 1.3-inch rule doesn’t completely eliminate all thinner bars – it just means you’ll need to adjust and use extra padding…something like Fat Gripz or even a towel will do.

4 – Finish of the bars – slick, padded, powder-coated

The finish of dip bars is less crucial compared to something like barbells.

If the bar is thick enough and you get the spacing right, it acts more as support rather than something you grab onto.

I’d avoid the slick bars unless you’re choosing them for a particular reason…like advanced calisthenics stuff.

For most people – padded and powder-coated dip bars will be grippy enough.

Not all powder coats and foam handles are created equal

With a powder coat, you want a matte finish with a bit of grit. You don’t want a rubbery finish that feels slippery on sweaty hands.

With padded handles, you want medium-soft dense foam. You don’t want handles that feel plasticky, and you don’t want low-quality foam that will fall apart in 6 months.

That sounds commonplace, but…

I can not list every dip station that has a grip problem. We could go on with that ‘till the cows come home.

I can tell you this – none of the top 11 picks suffers from it. It was a deal-breaker in the choosing process.

5 – Build of the frame – structural build and finish

The structural build comes down to the cross-section of the tubes and the gauge of the steel used.

Finish build refers to the finer detail – like the coating, welds, and joints.

Again, we’re looking at different dip bars here so it’s a mixed bag.

Here’s what I’ve seen over the years:

  • The best dip bars are built around an 11 to 14-gauge frame.
  • Most of them are 14-gauge, and it’s where the best value lives.
  • Most of the freestanding stations use 6-square-inch tubing for the frame.
  • The attention to detail and finishes are rarely great in the under-150 range. In other words – to get precise, clean welds, you’ll need to go with some of the Rogue or PRX stuff.

Finally, choose frames with built-in rubber feet for floor protection.

That way, you won’t have to use all those gains and upper body strength to defend yourself from an angry wife because she “paid a fortune for the hickory hardwood.”

(Any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidental…kinda.)

6 – Weight capacity of dip bars & stations

The weight capacity of dip bars/stations is in the 300-1000+ lbs range (graph below) .

Anything over 400 lbs is great.

Don’t look at the capacity literally – look at it as an indication of stability.

For example, a station like Dripex looks very similar to a bunch of other stuff, including some more popular bars like the ProSourceFit or the Lebert .

The devil is in the details…in this scenario, the weight capacity.

The Dripex is listed at 1,100 lbs, while the other two max out at 400.

Does that mean they’ll break or bend?

(unless Eddie Hall or “the Mountain gets into calisthenics and starts doing handstands)

It does mean the dip bars with significantly lower capacities will feel wobblier and have some bend on intense movements.

7 – Size of the station – fixed dip stand vs. rack-mounted, foldable, and portable dip bar

Space is often the name of the game with home gyms and not everyone has the space for a standalone dip bar.

That’s why I’m including the footprint comparison graph here.

When not available in the specs, these footprints are approximations based on what I measured.

They might not be precise to the T, but they definitely are a useful starting point.

Also, the footprint only makes sense when interpreted along with the station type.

Here’s what I mean by that:

  • The Fringe wall-mounted bar folds down and take up minimal space.
  • On the other hand, you have fixed stands like XMark , Body-Solid , and Titan .
  • The rack-mounted bars will have a smaller footprint but you’ll need to go outside that footprint to actually perform the dip. That especially goes if you’re a bigger guy doing dips as a part of your chest day  (because you’ll be leaning forward) .
  • Some stations (like the Dripex ) look easy to dismantle and move, but trust me, doing it every time is a pain in the rear.
  • Finally, some of these actually qualify as portable dip bars. A case in point is the GoBeast . The trade-off of portability is sturdiness.

Here’s a no-BS reference – only go with a freestanding dip station if you have 6+ square feet to spare.

The Titan assisted dip machine seems like an exception with a footprint of 5.6 square feet, but it’s not. You’ll need 1.5-3 feet to load and unload the plates.

8 – Price of a good dip station

Expect to pay $80-350 for a good home-gym dip station (see graph below) .

I’m stressing “home gym” here because there are dip machines that cost well over 4K, which are only practical for commercial use.

They’re not practical for home use but they’re awesome if you have an unlimited budget.

If that’s the case, my absolute favorite is the Hammer Strength Select Assist Dip Chin.

9 – Warranty terms

Good dip bars are basically pieces of steel tubing put together in a way that allows for comfortable dip movement.

Duh…am I smart or am I smart?

Of course, that’s an oversimplification…but I’m using it here to make the following point – there’s no excuse for not offering anything less than a lifetime warranty on any top-tier dip station.

Yet, some companies still do it…offer sub-par terms, that is…

Here are my 3 rules of thumb:

  • If you’re paying over $100 for a dip bar, expect a lifetime warranty.
  • Only accept a basic 30-day warranty for cheap stations like the GoBeast .
  • The exception to rule #1 are all Titan units and some from Fringe.

Why are Titan’s dip bars an expectation?

Because they’re still sticking to their 1-year warranty policy. It’s a blanket policy that goes for all Titan stuff, and dip bars are no exception.

Unlike other brands, the warranty tells you very little about the Titan’s build quality.

What’s up with Fringe?

The Fringe wall-mounted dip is an exception because there’s a joint – if anything’s gonna go, it will be that part.

I don’t see that happening, but I understand the reasoning behind the 1-year warranty.

Methodology – how we assess and rate dip bars and stations

Below is an overview of what we did for this guide.

Our process of choosing the best bar and dip station is unique because it’s a blend of first-hand experiences, tests, statistics, and expertise.

In other words – we don’t just choose random bars and babble about stuff you can see in their spec sheets anyway.

Why put it like that?

Because it’s so common in this space…and I’ve seen it time and again while working on this guide.

Anyway, here’s what we did…

  • We created a database of dip bars and stations that we feel are worth your money. To do that, we looked at 35 sources – from all the major home gym brands to Amazon. There’s some subjectivity here. To offset it, we cast a wide net and made sure we’re not missing anything. The result – a list of 60+ dip stations and bars.
  • We defined types of dip bars that are different enough to be in separate categories. This was a crucial step because you can’t compare XMark 500 to Rogue Matador more than you can compare a pear to a peach. They’re both sweet, but that’s about it. This step was about creating groups of dip bars where differences can be quantified and measured. The result is 20+ quality categories within every dip bar type.
  • We gathered the data for each criterion defined. The result – completed dip station database.

FAQs about dip bars

How high should dip bars be.

Dip bars should be between 3 and 5 feet high. Some bars, like the BalanceFrom Multi-Function , feature a height-adjustment mechanism that makes it possible to find your sweet spot.

The lower limit is the more important of the two – to find your absolute minimum dip-bar height, position your hands like you’re doing a dip,  measure the distance between your hands and the bottom of the knees, and add 0.5 feet.

Which dip bars to buy?

Here’s which dip bars to buy depending on your goal:

– If dips are one of your go-to’s on chest and triceps day – go with a freestanding station like the Xmark 500 . – If you’re into calisthenics, get dip bars that adjust in height and width, like the Dripex . – If you’re short on space but have a rack – choose a rack-mounted station like the PRX One or PRX Pro . – If space is limited and you don’t own a rack, go for wall-mounted foldable dip bars like the Fringe Dip .

Are dip bars effective?

Yes, dip bars are effective, provided you get a safe one like the XMark 500 .

Dip bars have a greater muscle activation (mean peak triceps activation) than bench dips, as shown in this 2022 study .

They’re also less risky for the shoulders because they require less extension.

What is the best size dip bar?

These are the guidelines for the best size of a dip bar:

– 1.5-1.7 inches thick handles. – Bar distance slightly greater than your shoulders. – Bar length no less than 14 inches. – Bar height at least 0.5-1 ft. greater than the distance between your hands (in a dip position) and the bottom of your knees.

Some better bars, like the Dripex , allow you to adjust one or more of these sizing points.

A dip bar can hold 300-1,100+ lbs. The median capacity is around 500 lbs, like on the Titan Dip Stand .

On the higher end of the capacity range, you have calisthenics-oriented bars like Dripex .

Other dip bars and dip stations – close-but-no-cigar

Below are dip stations and bars that didn’t make it to the best-dip-bar list but deserve a mention.

It’s a huge market, and we tried to make the guide concise and simple.

What it means on our end

Making this guide straightforward was not straightforward at all.

If that makes sense…

It means the best dip station FOR YOU might be on this list.

  • Fitness Gear Pro dip bars – a solid piece of equipment with a heavy-duty steel frame. Still, there are cheaper power towers that are just as good for dips.
  • RELIFE REBUILD YOUR LIFE dip station – a popular dip stand similar to at least a dozen others on Amazon. It costs the same as the Dripex and the geometry is akin but doesn’t compare in robustness and weight capacity. And what’s up with that name? Is that supposed to inspire me? Just call it “Get Off Your A** dip station” …that’ll do it.
  • Dipholm Adjustable rack-mounted station by Home Gym Builders – my all-time favorite. Versatile dip bars and probably the best rack-mounted station on the planet.  They’re made in Europe and not available in the US. Plus, they’re crazy expensive… 4-5 times the cost of premium US-made bars like Rogue or PRX . I exchanged a few emails with Lucas, a kind customer representative from Home Gym Builders. He shared that any delivery service would add at least $250 to the price. It seems they have no plans of shipping to the US anytime soon.
  • BalanceFrom Multi-Function Dip Stand – cheap, yet solid stand with fixed padded handles that won’t work for everyone.
  • ProSourceFit Dip Station – good but not unique, costs (a bit) more than similar dip stands.

A power tower is a versatile station – dips, leg raises, and a pull-up bar.

All of these are decent but can’t be compared to a standalone dip bar.

(I’ve also never been a fan of the “power tower” name…but that’s beside the point.)

We all love dips, being one of the best bodyweight chest exercises, and a portable dip bar (aka parallel bar) is quite a must for home gyms and apartments rooms alike that lack space.

Now before you say that you rather need a dedicated corner for a sturdier option like a Rogue dip station or Matador Dip Bar , you better know that these two were designed specifically for heavy use and weighted dips. Hence that’s where they excel.

However, you won’t be moving them around, and they don’t offer as much freedom in terms of versatility as a pair of portable dip bars, which also have a longer bar working area. Therefore if besides dips you like other bodyweight exercises as well (and you should), parallel bars are a rational investment and a must-have in your home gym arsenal.

I can’t stress enough, if your home gym only has so much room, versatility is key. And this is where portable dip bars shine, – or any kind of parallel bar really. It is a handy tool to build your chest, back, and bulletproof shoulders as well as abs through constant tension. This type of training is responsible for the dense muscles of gymnasts and people doing calisthenics.

The Lebert fitness portable dip stands are not height adjustable but you can get them in two different sizes. The basic, lower version is only 28″ tall which might be too low for some, but this way offers more stability, and more variety, depending on the exercise (few people even use it for Bulgarian split squats).

However, for taller-built users over 6 feet, I recommend the XL size that is 31″ high, which is pretty much the standard with portable dip bars anyway and allows for deeper dips and full rows.

Lebert Fitness dip bars are simply just two T-shaped rails, there’s no other useless fancy feature. They emphasize versatility first which comes from its truly freestanding nature. Place the bars separately in any way and at whatever angle you wish.

However, the advantage of its simplicity is its disadvantage as well. For a strict parallel use (as most dips are performed), an adjustable connecting rod would really come in handy, to provide more stability, especially for the XL version. This is not a useless feature, and I’m happy to see more and more manufacturers provide such solutions just like the Relife dip stand.

The Ultimate Body Press Dip Bar is unusual in a way that the bent tubes once locked together, form one solid piece, as opposed to the 2 independent rails more common with portable dip bars.

This one-piece design structure is more rigid and creates more stability than free-standing parallel bars. On the contrary, it is less versatile. However, it completes the task at hand pretty well, which is dips.

So, when choosing between the T-shaped free-standing bar design and the Ultimate Body Press Dip Bar, you have to ask yourself;

do you need a training tool only for dips, or you wish to perform more complex moves as well like those of calisthenics training.

If so, you need more freedom, with regards to where you grip the bars, so the useful working area on the bar is something to consider. With UBP it’s pretty short, so you won’t do elbow dips aka Russian dips. Also, you need more freedom as to how and at what angle you position the bars to challenge other muscle groups, add variety. For example, what if you want to do rows with an overhand or underhand grip? Or perform bar dips which is a great step to progress for muscle-ups.

Types of Dip Bars and Important Distinctions

There are so many types of home workout tools out there that it’s easy to get confused about different concepts. A dip bar can be anything from two branches to state-of-the-art dip machines. There should be a logical separation because apart from the fact that obviously all of them can be used for dips, they all differ in terms of their usability and practicality.

Let’s clear the fog, and look at each of the most common concepts briefly from most to least bulky:

Dip Stations

These gym equipment are really on the heavy-duty side of home workout tools, therefore they were most prevalent in commercial gyms. Dip stations are versatile and rather big, but that’s where their pros lie, and in most of the cases, a pull-up chin-up bar and a backrest for leg raises are integrated into them; hence often called power towers .

Because of their enhanced versatility, dip stations can serve as a sole, multifaceted home gym equipment , much as Total Gyms can, with the main exception that TGs mostly use cables.

Dip stands are a tad bit less bulky than dip stations. Because of their heavier weight, portability is still an issue, hence it’s best to create a permanent place for them.

They are mostly designed only for dips and feature a pair of parallel hand grips. Dip stands feature exceptional stability therefore excellent for heavy, weighted dips with dip belts , however for the same reason are the least versatile of all the dip bar types and most of them are not adjustable in any way.

The main subject of this article is parallel dip bars, but not the ones found on calisthenics playgrounds rather those that are a free-standing pair of bars thus easily portable.

These dip bars are the most versatile of all the other types , predominantly because of their separate, free-standing nature. They are the big brothers of parallettes, with greater height.

With increased height, comes greater flexibility in terms of usability. Typically parallel dip bars can be used for bodyweight dips, bodyweight rows, front levers, back levers, partial skin the cats. Basically, everything that parallettes can’t be used for because of their smaller size.

Parallettes have the smallest size of all, and while they can’t really be used for traditional dips (except for the shorter parallette dips), they are very useful for building all-around bodyweight strength and a ton of core strength ; no surprise that parallettes are widely used among gymnasts.

You can fit the smaller ones even in your suitcase. They are such simple exercise tools, that you could easily make one on your own of cheap wood from the closest home depot.

You can best use parallettes for pushups for L-sit holds, handstands, V-sits, planches, L-sit to handstands and for various supports. Not like you could not do them with a parallel portable dip bar, it’s just that a parallette’s shorter height makes it extra difficult to tuck your legs to clear the floor for most support exercises.

And finally, there are dip handles. Just like the Rogue Matador , they are rather just attachments to poles of power racks and they don’t offer much besides dips on their own, but that they do very well! The angled bars let you set the best position for your shoulders. Attached to a squat or power rack these dip handles become very powerful tools and can make a complete home gym, beating traditional dip stations every time.

Benefits of Parallel Dip Bars

Versatility.

A pair of parallel dip bars can be moved around easily, they weigh around 20lbs the most, so it’s portability and consequently adjustability that gives their edge. Place a portable dip bar in any way, at any angle you like, that best fits your home workout. Once you are finished, put them to the corner, under the bed, or screw the legs off to win even more space.

Besides gymnastic rings and pull up bars, a pair of portable dip bars are the best investment for your home workout, especially if you like bodyweight training. You literally only need a couple of square meters in your apartment, should it be your living room, bedroom, or terrace to make great use of this ridiculously simple home gym equipment.

Within that tiny space, you can build upper body strength and tremendous functional core strength with constant tension and isometric training methods characteristics of parallel bar training. That freedom and functionality are unmatched by any other complex home gym equipment, total gyms, and complex cable machines even if high quality.

The only drawback is that parallel bars being bodyweight equipment, their usage requires a certain level of strength prerequisites to be used safely in the long term.

Superior Muscle Involvement, Easy on the Joints

Among many, one particular characteristic calisthenics training, parallel bar training, and gymnastics have in common is that they all heavily involve so-called closed kinetic chain movements (CKC).

These types of movements are more joint-friendly, presenting less shear force to the joints, and also spread the load across multiple joints, hence said to be more functional. They also promote right joint alignment through bone support since there’s no open end of the movement chain as opposed to open chain movements.

To better understand, the most often used example for an open-chain exercise would be the bench press, while a closed chain exercise would be a pushup. With the former comes one end “open” that is the hands holding the barbell can move freely.

In contrast, with closed chain pushups, both ends (hands and feet) are anchored to the ground making less room for error in general (forcing every joint to “their place” since there are no loose ends). Hence a better option for beginners, which by no means suggests that advanced or pro athletes wouldn’t benefit from it.

Moving your whole bodyweight is always a hard task when it is limited mainly to the upper body as is the case with most parallel bar workouts. The disadvantageous positions and angles make these bodyweight workouts very intense and for that reason recruit lots of muscle fibers, while still being joint-friendly since no external weight is added.

Increased Strength

Just like pull-ups, dips are usually very hard for beginner and novice lifters. Being able to perform even just 1 proper dip repetition, requires that you are able to crank out 20+ pushups with flawless form, easily any time. I don’t even bother with dips until my clients prove to be ready with such a prerequisite.

However, with greater intensity comes greater gains, once you can do dips for reps, a whole new level will open up. According to male dip standards , based on 120,000+ lifts, if a 200-pound guy dips out 9 reps, that’s the equivalent of 1 rep with 55lbs added weight. Pretty cool huh!? This is how hard dips are.

As far as strength ratios go, typically lifters can dip 105% of what they can bench press , so in terms of getting strong with dips, the sky is the limit, but that’s out of the scope of portable dip bars.

Increased Coordination

Calisthenics training and parallel bars go hand in hand, and among the many benefits of this type of training, improved isometric strength and coordination stand out.

Later in the “dip bar exercises” section, you’ll see there are endless ways to progress simple exercises with a pair of parallel bars, by using speed, joint end ranges, and combining movements into flows.

Also, isometric holds, characteristic of dip bar training, give you more time to perceive how the exercise feels. That way you can recruit more or just relax different muscle groups, leading to more efficient execution which over the long term translates potentially into more volumes of work, essential to muscle hypertrophy.

It doesn’t need too much explanation, the long isometric holds, and constant tension flows mean more time under tension, which causes more blood-flow restriction in the working muscles that equals more metabolic stress . Besides initiating great muscle-building processes, this also improves the body’s ability to stay longer above the lactate threshold level, typically where you feel your muscles burning.

Your body will adapt more to this state of being which translates into more anaerobic working capacity, which in the end causes your home workouts to be more effective. All of which without investing in heavy weights, or turning your apartment into a mess. This is where parallel dip bars shine.

Parallel Dip Bar Buying Guide for Home Workout

A proper height for any exercise where your body’s starting position is a hang would be one where your feet don’t touch the ground plus a few more inches. Most dip bars and pull-up stations aren’t designed this way though which can compromise form and thus the exercise-induced effect.

This is why I recommend that the higher your parallel dip bar is, the better, and look for one with adjustable features. Portable dip bar heights range typically between 28-35 inches.

With height come stability issues, so it’s important that when you pick an adjustable parallel bar you pay attention to how wide its base is . The wider the better.

Weight Limit

Portable dip bars aren’t designed for heavyweight use in general. Just because you have two freestanding bars with wide bases doesn’t mean you can put a whole lot of pressure on the bars, because it will at some point tilt to the sides.

It’s almost impossible to find parallel dip bars with a weight limit of less than 300 pounds, which is plenty for most lifters, so long they do bodyweight training . Even if they put on a weighted vest, it’s an easy task for most of the parallel bars, especially the ones subject to this review.

However, to stay safe it’s best that you avoid using heavy weights typically what dip belts were designed for. You do not even risk the possibility of exceeding the bar’s weight limit, but it’s most likely that the plates will hit the ground before you reach proper depth due to the low build frame of portable dip bars.

Width Between Bars

Obviously, this is only a concern of those parallel bars that are connected through a connector and allow for width adjustment. Just to get an idea, the width of FIG certified (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) gymnastics parallel bars can be adjusted from 42-52 inches, so this is the range that will be identical for most users.

Despite this, dips most often favor narrower setups, so typically dip bars can be adjusted anywhere between 20-40 inches .

Portable Dip Bar Stability

This is where a connecting rod comes in handy to prevent the possible tilting of the bars. However, this is a matter of usage.

In the case of dips, free-standing portable bars should provide enough stability by their wide base. Or the other way around, the user should only create a downward force against the dip handles and not lateral.

This is highly a matter of upper body strength and coordination. More specifically a function of pectoralis muscle strength. Normally, and ideally, you wouldn’t even need a stabilizing connector.

However, on uneven surfaces like grass, or in the case of calisthenics and its higher velocity and multiplanar moves, the safety connector proves to be very useful and since it can be removed easily it certainly doesn’t hurt to have this extra feature.

Materials and Grip

Most portable dip bars weigh around 15 to 20lbs and are made of 1,5mm thick steel tubes, which doesn’t sound like much, but still, plenty for bodyweight dips and calisthenics, with weight limits specified by manufacturers between 300-500 lbs.

Were these free-standing parallel bars any heavier and it would contradict the concept of portable and multi-purpose bodyweight strength equipment. The bars’ grip area is usually covered with a non-slip foam handle which creates a comfortable grip.

However, for some reason, powder coating, which is a common finish for parallettes isn’t used with parallel bars, at least I have yet to see any. It’s a pity because it’s light years better than a foam cover anyway.

So as long as glossy painted coverings are popular to cover steel, a foam grip is no doubt a must.

Portability and Storage

As mentioned in the intro, portability when it comes to parallel bars is restricted to easy mobility in your house as opposed to transportability. Unlike parallettes, you’re never going to squeeze a parallel bar in your traveling suitcase.

The mobility of portable dip bars lies in their lightweight construction and simple design which makes it easy to put them away. A major design flaw though is that, unlike other portable training tools, parallel bars are not foldable in an easy way. Usually, you have to unscrew the crosslegs to fit them into tight wardrobes or slide them under the bed.

Fixed or Adjustable Parallel Bar

Home workout tools need to be adjustable, period. The only exception is if you have so many workout equipments anyways and/or spacious rooms that you can afford to have a dedicated training tool for every exercise. Like a dip bar for dips, a pull-up bar for pull-ups, a squat rack that is only a squat rack, etc.

However, for the majority of us home workout seekers, who are not blessed with a luxurious garage gym, versatility is key to saving space and still getting an effective workout done.

So yes, if you can skip buying a dip bar or a dip stand because your parallel bar can be set a few inches higher due to an adjustable pull knob, Pbars are more than reasonable, since they can be used for horizontal rows, calisthenics, leg raises and so on.

If you live in a very tiny apartment you might need to disassemble your parallel bar every now and then. This basically means for most Pbar dip bars that you need to unscrew the crosslegs. This doesn’t seem a hard task, but in the era of folding squat racks is still interesting.

Twistable crosslegs, or a foldable design would definitely be an improvement especially since parallel bars are so widespread as compact home gym equipment.

What Muscles Can Be Worked With Parallel Dip Bars

The main muscles worked the most during parallel bar dips are the pushing muscles of the upper body, namely the chest and triceps. Along comes, partly as stabilizers the front deltoid, lower trapezius, rhomboids, the back aka lats, and the rotator cuff.

It is believed that dips build a wider and thicker chest than bench press does . This is mainly because you can achieve a greater stretch in the chest muscle at the bottom of the movement which emphasizes the outer part of the pecs.

Also, dips force you to engage more muscles for stabilization and require more coordination since your body is not supported by a bench but you are to balance your whole body with your arms anchored. For this reason, as explained earlier, the dip is a closed chain exercise, meaning it activates multiple joints in a let’s say “more functional” way than the bench press does. So dips and overhead presses are more fundamental than the bench press and although according to studies bench press variations represent a higher place in pectoral muscle activation and overall strength and muscle improvement, there’s a reason why dips are often called the upper body squat.

Now about what other muscles parallel bars can work in general, that is really up to the exercise itself. Calisthenics and gymnastics sports are both known for their wide range of exercises, and even more for their varieties. So for simplicity, let’s just highlight those muscles that are strengthened most often during classic parallel bar bodyweight training, typically consisting of dips, pushups, leg raises, and rows:

Worked much so

  • Chest muscles
  • Shoulders, rotator cuff, serratus anterior
  • Triceps and biceps
  • Rhomboids and Trapezius, most often as stabilizers
  • Core, abs, hip flexors

Worked less so

  • Spinal erectors to a less degree
  • Glutes, hamstrings, calves

Obviously, this doesn’t mean that an L-sit to handstand or a back lever would not seriously work the entire back chain, so as the glutes and hamstrings. It just rather means you won’t see too many beginners tossing around such advanced feats.

Also, as you’ll see below in the exercise section, there are so many ways to come around the limitations of portable dip bars. Eventually, with a bit of creativity, even the less worked hamstrings and glutes can be trained, by doing Bulgarian split squats or hamstring bridges/hip thrusts with extended legs using the top of the dip bar as support.

Best Parallel Bar Exercises

The exercises covered are pretty much what most users will be using a parallel bar for and as you see these exercises are more than enough to elicit a great training effect with a home exercise tool as simple as a pair of rails.

Here are some more advanced dip bar exercises, whereas you’ll see the bar still holds pretty firmly, there’s no shaking or wobbling.

Finally here’s a 4-minute full-body dip bar home workout circuit if you are in the rush but still want gains. The majority of exercises are a staple for calisthenics and can be trained on a daily basis to strengthen the joints and connective tissues for more intense moves.

Strength Prerequisites for Portable Dip Bar Home Workout

Honestly, if you never worked out before and just starting out your home workout journey, before you rush on buying a pair of portable dip bars it’s best to stay humble.

Just to hold a dip position with your legs hanging right under your body, requires a good amount of body awareness and back strength to keep the shoulders in place.

Couple this by raising your legs forward to a dip L-sit hold and the above strength prerequisites become painfully real. You’ll need a good amount of lower trap function and strength in your lats to keep your shoulders down, and scapular retraction strength to prevent them from rounding forward. Let alone triceps and chest…

So in my opinion there are 5 strength prerequisites to fully reap the benefits of parallel dip bar training:

  • 20 pushups unbroken.
  • 3 solid pull-ups.
  • 10 inverted rows with body parallel to the ground. High enough so the bar touches your abdomen each rep.
  • 1 minute hanging from a bar to prove solid grip strength.
  • Hollow body hold for 30 seconds, to prove core function and body awareness.

Few home gym equipment offers the degree of exercise variety and versatility that a parallel dip bar does. With this one lightweight tool, you can cover around 80% of the most popular bodyweight training in as little space as 4-6 square meters.

Portable dip bars are versatile on their own, they don’t need many fancy features or designs to be useful. They are best utilized and provide the most benefits when freely adjustable, hence I prefer the simple designed Relife and Lebert dip stands over other constructions.

Yet the main reason why the winner of this portable dip bar review is the Relife dip stand is that its simple rail design is reinforced with a stabilizer rod that can provide beginners with a secure feel and let them focus their attention on the exercise itself.

Remember, to maximize the benefits of your parallel bar workouts, try to train daily and put quality over quantity, and focus on time under tension training instead of blindly squeezing out rep after rep. In general dip bars and parallettes are best used and provide the most gains when high muscle tension is present, with high exercises demanding focused attention and great effort.

Parallel dip bar training is therefore a great addition to any home workout to counterbalance high-velocity interval training and low-intensity cardio bodyweight workouts.

Whether bracing my entire bodyweight or adding a few 45s (or two), I’ve never felt less than secure atop this well-built dip bar. You’re on the road or just gotten off the plane at your temporary destination. Of course, you’ve brought your trusty Travel Pull-Up Bar with you so you can do your Calisthenics exercise. Whether business or pleasure, your travels can put a serious dent into your workout routine. Having a Travel Pull-Up Bar with you allows you to maintain some if not all of your workout routine while you’re not at home. So, what differentiates a Travel Pull-Up Bar from a normal portable Pull-Up Bar? What can you do with a Travel Pull-Up Bar? Are they just as capable as normal portable Pull-Up Bars? For the rest, the Travel Pull-Up Bar needs to be easy to install and safely mounted and not slip off or come loose. Last but not least, you need to be able to comfortably do some actual Calisthenics. This shortens the list with viable Travel Pull-Up Bars considerably as most are too big, too heavy, not safe enough or too restrictive in what you can do with them. We’ve boiled down the list to the following 4 best Travel Pull-Up Bars.

#1 Duonamic Eleviia

Our absolute favorites when we’re away from home are the Duonamic Eleviia . This innovative take on a Travel Pull-Up Bar has been designed down the minutia to be light-weight, portable and just as versatile as a full-length Pull-Up Bar. They take all but 5 seconds to set up and nearly any doorframe in the world will work. The proprietary clamp design means that the more weight you hand from them, the tighter they clamp down around the molding (the trim around the doorframe). They are safe by design.

Its dimensions are 12 x 10 x 4¾, so they should fit in any normal travel bag or suitcase. Maybe leave that floral shirt that only you like at home and the Duonamic Eleviia fits right in. It weighs just 3.5lbs. You don’t need to worry about that hotel door either. The soft, thermoplastic design is safe for use on any doorframe without scratching the pain or damaging the woodwork.

The handles feel very comfortable, better even than most foam-covered Pull-Up Bars. They are suspended by cords so your center of gravity will lean towards the center of the doorway. At first this may be a bit closer to the handles than you’re used too but it is very manageable. All regular Pull-Up Bar exercises like pull-ups and chin-ups, front levers and L-sits and even the German hang are possible.

#2 JayFlex Fitness Ryze-Ups

With a weight of 4.6 pounds and the quickest setup of almost any doorframe we’ve seen yet, the JayFlex Ryze-Ups are a serious contender for the number one spot. The Ryze-Ups need a door molding between 2 and 6 inches to work, which should accommodate more than 90% of the world’s doors. They’re a great companion to have as a Travel Pull-Up Bar. Slap them on the doorframe within 5 seconds if you’re quick and you’re good to go. They are nearly perfectly flat when folded so they should fit right on top of your clothes. 

The handles are quite a stroke of genius. They are set in a circular rim and you can rotate them to any desired position. This gives you an unlimited number of options when it comes to gripping them, straight, diagonal or a hammer grip. The handles are rubberized and ergonomically shaped. They feel comfortable to hold and you should have no problems doing all your Pull-Up Bar exercises while you’re travelling.

#3 Jayflex CrossGrips

A bit heavier than the Ryze-Ups, the Jayflex CrossGrips are probably the closest you’ll get to a traditional  Door Mounted Pull-Up Bar  without hauling an actual full-sized Pull-Up Bar with you. The CrossGrips are a set of what you could call miniature Pull-Up Bars working together to provide room for both of your hands. 

Made of stainless steel with a powder-coated steel casing, the CrossGrips are rugged, durable and strong. The clamps are spring loaded and don’t need a lot of adjustment. This takes a little longer than the clamp design of the Eleviia but not by a whole lot. You have the advantage of an all-steel construction.

With both a parallel and a perpendicular grip on each CrossGrip, you’re given all the usual options you have with a regular Door Mounted Pull-Up Bar. The grips themselves are nice to hold and right in the middle between coarse and finely coated. In its deployed configuration, the soft rubber feet can also be placed on the ground. You’re not only bringing your Travel Pull-Up Bar but also your travel  Parallettes  with the CrossGrips. 

#4 Pullup & Dip Mobile Pull-Up Bar & Bag

When we said the viable options were limited, we weren’t kidding. The Pullup & Dip Mobile Pull-Up Bar is a portable Pull-Up Bar which can be disassembled into small enough pieces to take with you. The caveat here is that you either prepare a separate bag or buy the fitting Pullup & Dip Sports Backpack. Though not nearly as small or light as the handles we discussed previously, the Mobile Pull-Up Bar is the most portable of the larger portable Pull-Up Bars out there. All you need is a good tree and you’re good to go.

Quality and the fit and finish on all Pullup & Dip products are phenomenal. With a full-length Pull-Up Bar, you’re no longer limited to the width of a doorframe either. The long center bar and curved ends give you a range of options to better exercise your back and shoulders as well as your biceps and triceps. This is a level of functionality the most compact Travel Pull-Up Bars simply can’t offer.

We doubt the Hotel will appreciate you drilling holes into their walls, so you’ll have to find a big, sturdy tree instead. 

It can be quite a challenge to maintain your workout routine while travelling. For a short time away from home it might not be a problem to skip a session or plan it on a different day. Maintaining discipline though is a problem for many (God knows it is for us) so even if you can’t do your full workout, it’s a nice feeling to at least be doing something. With the aid of a Travel Pull-Up Bar, you can do your Pull-Up exercises virtually anywhere you are. The most common thread is that you need a doorframe onto which you mount the Travel Pull-Up Bar.

Another option is to  find a Calisthenics Park  close to where you will be staying or to make use of the hotel’s amenities should those be available. The wise person plans this ahead.

Here are some alternatives if you forgot to bring your Travel Pull-Up Bar or to Pull-Up Bars in general.

Use a Door and a Towel

Don’t overthink this one. Simply open a door, grab the top side and pull yourself up. You can drape a towel over the top of the door to provide some comfort to your hands. This isn’t ideal by any stretch of the imagination. Your body will rub up and down the door itself, the hold isn’t very comfortable, you can’t close your wrist and you’re limited to just one grip. But in a pinch, you can get some work done. Just be absolutely certain that the door is sturdy enough to do this.

Sling Trainer or Suspension Trainer

The simplest way is by bringing a compact, lightweight Travel Pull-Up Bar. These are easily installed and don’t take too much room in your luggage. Alternatively, you can use the door itself by pulling yourself up from the top of the door while it is open. To provide some comfort, drape a towel over the top of the door but make sure the door is sturdy enough to hold your weight.

That depends on the travel. If you travel by car, you could feasibly take any Pull-Up Bar with you as long as it fits inside the car. If you’re travelling by plane, you’ll be limited to luggage weight and the number of bags you can bring. In that case, the Travel Pull-Up Bar will have to fit within those constraints.

The simplest answer would be to make use of the hotel’s amenities, should they possess a fitness room. The Top 9 Bars and Pubs in Moscow Russia

Moscow is known for its extravagant nightlife and exclusive nightclubs. Sometimes, though, you just want to sit down and have a drink with some friends in a cozy pub instead of (or before) a wild night out on the town.

Luckily, Moscow’s pub scene has been expanding rapidly over the past several years, and you're sure to find your favorite atmosphere in the following list of Moscow’s top 10 bars and pubs, all of which are easily reachable by the Metro system or by taxi.

Like in most parts of the world, the pubs in Moscow are subject to sudden closures, so always be sure to check the bars' websites and social media channels for up-to-date information on hours of operation, special events, and food and drink pricing.

Noor | Electro Bar

This is a cozy bar where everyone is welcome and the cocktail selection is unparalleled. The music is always at a manageable level, and you will not have to fight to hold a conversation over it.
