Delta overhauls the onboard experience, goes all-in on sustainability

Zach Griff

Delta is rethinking many aspects of its onboard experience with sustainability in mind.

The Atlanta-based carrier announced on Tuesday an overhauled inflight service concept, which will see new amenity kits, bedding, cutlery and beverage selections available across most of its flights in the days and weeks to come.

The nose-to-tail product revamp was completed with two goals in mind: to reduce single-use plastic waste and to support minority and women-run businesses.

And if Delta's latest product choices are as sustainable as the company says they are, then the airline is making significant progress in its eco-conscious initiatives. Altogether, the products will reduce plastic consumption by nearly five million pounds annually, according to the airline.

"We want to protect our planet and the people on it, and the products we provide onboard are the latest way we're living out this commitment," said Amelia DeLuca, vice president of sustainability in a statement.

We'll break down each of the new products below.

New Delta One amenity kits

Highlighting the new onboard experience will be Delta's new business-class amenity kits, specifically designed for the airline by Mexican apparel brand Someone Somewhere .

travel kit delta

The new kits are launching in February, with most of the contents that you used to find in Delta's previous "goodie bags" for business-class flyers. This includes a Someone Somewhere eye mask, Grown Alchemist natural lip balm and hand lotion, and a Humble Co. bamboo toothbrush.

The bag itself will now be made from a woven fabric material in Delta colors and there will be two designs at launch.

travel kit delta

Of course, the new amenity kits mark the end of the airline's partnership with Tumi for Delta One passengers. Some travelers (and road warriors) might miss the legacy product, but Delta says the new ones are better for the environment.

The new amenity kit eliminates five single-use plastic items such as zippers and packaging, reducing plastic use by up to 90,000 pounds on an annual basis.

travel kit delta

Additionally, the airline's partnership with the brand has created jobs for more than 250 people in five of Mexico's most vulnerable states, according to the airline.

Bamboo and biodegradable cutlery

When it comes time for meal service, don't expect to eat with a plastic fork and knife on Delta. Instead, Delta will transition much of its onboard service to include bamboo cutlery throughout the year.

travel kit delta

The airline already offers biodegradable utensils in domestic first class and on select international flights. The airline will roll out similar dishware later this year throughout its international coach experience, which together will reduce plastic waste by up to 4.3 million pounds annually.

Those seated in Delta Premium Select and Delta One cabins will continue to enjoy metal silverware that's cleaned after each flight.

Canned wines

To eliminate the use of plastic cups, Delta will begin stocking two new aluminum-canned wines from Imagery Estate Winery on domestic flights.

travel kit delta

Domestic transcon flyers will have a pick between Imagery's Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay starting later this week, followed by a broader rollout to all domestic flights later this year. The former retails for $20 a bottle, while the latter costs a few dollars less ($17).

I'm no oenophile, but I wonder if (and how) canned wine will taste different than if it were poured from a bottle.

New Delta One bedding

Along with the new products, Delta is reminding travelers about its latest bedding offerings . The airline's pillows and blankets are now made from eco-friendly materials that utilize more than 100 recycled plastic bottles for each set. Additionally, the new pillow and duvet are provisioned in a laundered zipped bedding bag, instead of single-use plastic wrap.

travel kit delta

Delta started to quietly roll out this new bedding package late last year , without formally making an announcement until this latest press release.

Just like the amenity kits, some long-time Delta flyers might miss the airline's previous bedding options, which were provided in partnership with Westin Heavenly Bedding.

Bottom line

Delta is going all-in on sustainability with its revamped onboard experience.

While that's great news for the environment, it'll definitely be a change for long-time flyers. Instead of well-known brands like Tumi and Westin, the airline is sourcing its latest amenity kits and bedding from smaller, more eco-conscious partners.

Whether that's good news will likely depend on your personal preferences, but one thing is for certain: Delta is making good on its promise to be more eco-friendly.

travel kit delta

In fact, right before the pandemic, Delta announced that it would pledge $1 billion to become fully carbon neutral by 2030.

"You can't have a sustainable business model if you're not creating a sustainable environment for your customers to feel good about what you sell," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said.

Live and Let's Fly

Delta’s Outstanding TUMI Amenity Kit

While my overall flight on delta from los angeles to new york was average at best , i want to commend delta for offering passengers a very practical and useful amenity kit..

Although I have a huge collection of amenity kits at home (much to my wife’s consternation), I generally view them as unnecessary niceties rather than as indispensable. I have so many amenity kits I don’t have to buy toothbrushes, toothpaste, or even La Prairie skin creme (thanks Lufthansa!).

But I don’t wear earplugs or eyeshades and the socks are usually too thin to be useful.

Delta has been partnering with TUMI for years for its amenity kits and I was very pleasantly surprised by the contents of the kit on my flight earlier this month.

a small grey and white bag with a blue label on a grey surface

The kit included:

  • Crest whitening toothpaste
  • Bombas socks (two pairs)
  • Le Labo skin creme and lip balm
  • Hand sanitizer

Every single items was extremely practical. My lips were chapped and the lip balm came in very handy. I liked the toothpaste much better than the usual tiny tubes of Colgate. The mouthwash and hand sanitizer were useful. But most of all I appreciated the socks.

Socks get easily lost at my house and I go through so many pairs each year because one of them inevitably gets lost (or “misplaced” by my three-year-old son). But airline socks are generally intended to be single-use only. They are thin and of poor quality. Not these, however. I appreciated that it was like a gift…a nice pair of socks.

I’m impressed that Delta offers a full amenity kit on a domestic flight. In fact, it’s better than most airlines offer on international flights. The only airline that offers a more useful kit is Emirates . American offers a cheap Cole Hahn amenity kit  on its premium transcon flights and United offers a similarly cheap Sunday Riley kit.

So well done Delta on your TUMI amenity kits!

@ Matthew — The FCQ loves DL Tumi kits! I swear we have a hundred of them. The two of you should start an addicts’ support group.

' src=

That’s good toothpaste, not the cheapo generic ones that some airlines use. Colgate is too strong and smelly for travel use, unfortunately.

@ derek — That is my favorite toothpaste. I buy the exact tube pictured in bulk (like 100 at a time) and use them everywhere.

Give them away. Friends, family, strangers.

AA discontinued the Cole Haan amenity kits earlier this year, replacing them with Athletic Propulsion Labs kits.

http://news.aa.com/news/news-details/2019/American-Airlines-leads-the-way-with-new-luxury-amenity-kits/default.aspx

They are similarly cheap, though.

What I will ding Delta for is that their Tumi kits are identical for both domestic and international routes. I agree they are standard setting domestically, but so-so internationally, though I really like the faux Tumi hardsided case either way.

' src=

You’re right. Thanks!

' src=

Could you do a post comparing Delta and United? You mention your delta flight was average but all your posts seem to rave about United. I always have the opposite experience so would like another perspective.

Sure, will do that in December.

' src=

I agree the Delta amenity kit is wonderful.

' src=

Interesting that they offer the same kits on first class domestic and international Delta One.

' src=

The toothbrush won’t be around for much longer: already some cities are preventing hotels from providing them; airlines will be next. All of them go directly to landfill; it’s hard to make a case for them . Toothpaste is available to buy in 90 gram ( 3 oz) tubes. Passengers should take their own.

Dentists recommend replacing toothbrushes on a monthly basis. It’s going to happen either way.

@Paolo: Maybe we should all get into a bubble and stop living since anything we do now offends someone, the planet, the air, ….. Landfill is part of our lives and there are now many ways to recycle what goes there. No, people won’t use their fingers as toothbrush.

I don’t suggest living in a bubble but rather make the point that so much of what we consume is unnecessary: eg, using disposable toothbrushes in hotels . Let’s face it, they’re nasty , cheap things…and it makes far more sense to take one’s own. As for landfill: there may be some creative solutions emerging in the first world, but in most places it’s just an untreated cess pile.

Delta offers, by far, the best and most consistent experience for domestic travel

1) Large route network with good on-time performance 2) Great schedule for premium transcons 3) good service 4) Large lounge network accessible with a card that earns transferable points 5) Reasonable buyups for first class 6) Ways to earn status faster with credit card spending 7) Miles worth a minimum of 1 cents when used to purchase airfare

I just flew D1 transpacific and still got the old malin and goetz amenity kit. In fact flew D1 transpacific 5 times since announced in June and never got the new amenity kit. Is it slowly getting rolled out?

Not to my knowledge. I received the Tumi kit on both LHR-JFK and the LAX-JFK flight.

' src=

Is the hand ‘cleanser’ able to be used as hand sanitizer… I have run out but have some in the Tumi Kits I have received over the past year….. Just wondering…

Amenity Kit Review: Delta One Domestic TUMI “19 Degree”

' src=

  • Bag/container: design, quality and reusability/collectibility of the bag.
  • Product: quality, size and variety of the facial and body products.
  • Comfort items: eye masks, ear plugs, etc.
  • Miscellaneous: pens, tissues and everything else.
  • Extras: additional items that make your flight just a tad more comfortable including pajamas, slippers, etc.

In this installment, I take a look at Delta’s domestic TUMI amenity kit.  Delta first introduced the TUMI kits in 2012; however, they refreshed the kits last September.  The airline alternates between hard-sided and soft-sided cases.  My westbound Delta One flight featured hard sided cases, which I review here.  This particular kit’s design copies TUMI’s “ 19 Degree ” aluminum luggage.  For a frame of reference, see Scott’s post on the previous generation kits , used from 2015-2017.

Delta One TUMI “19 Degree” Amenity Kit

Bag/container.

Delta One B767-400 - Tumi amenity kit

While I hardly consider myself an amenity kit geek, I like this design.  It’s clean and sleek, and does a good job copycatting a TUMI carry-on.  The case also looks like it has plenty of room to hold a toiletry Ziploc.  Or perhaps to store a passport, phone and wallet while going through security.

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit - size

I do wonder how durable the plastic case will be over time, though.  It seems like it might crack easily if stepped on, or crushed under heavy luggage.  I do need to dock a half point for that concern.  But kudos to Delta for designing something unique.  These kits have some collector value based on what I see on eBay.  Score: 4.5.

Philippine Airlines Announces Seattle Start Date

Delta equips its domestic kits with mouthwash, lip balm, hand lotion, and hand cleanser.  The lip balm and hand lotion are provided by Kiehl’s, a New York-based personal care company.

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit - Kiehl's products

Overall, the kit is pretty well equipped, and the Kiehl’s products are good quality.  The lotion retails for $22 for an 8.4-ounce bottle.  Unlike the jetBlue Hopper kit , Delta provides mouthwash, a welcome addition.  And of course, I always give extra credit for using local products.  Score: 3.5.

Comfort Items

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit - comfort items

In addition to the toothbrush and toothpaste, the kit includes socks, eyeshades, and earplugs.  They eyeshades do a good job blocking out light, but feel a bit tight in the back.  Otherwise, this is a pretty standard set of items, though the socks scream “Where’s Waldo”.  Score: 3.

Miscellaneous Items

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit - Miscellaneous Items

Delta provides a pack of tissues and a pen.  As someone who constantly fouls up his glasses, the tissues are appreciated.  Also, it’s rare to find a pen on a domestic amenity kit.  Goodness knows I always seem to need one and can’t find one.  Score: 3.

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit - monogram card

The kit technically contains no extras, like pajamas or slippers.  However, Delta does offer one pretty cool extra worth mentioning.  Inside each kit is a card for a complimentary monogramming at a TUMI store.  Just take the card with you, and they’ll personalize it while you wait.  Just be careful, lest you find yourself walking out with a few thousand bucks worth of luggage to go with it.  I’d say the ability to personalize an amenity kit is unique, and worth a bonus point.  Score: 2.

Delta One TUMI Amenity Kit Final Thoughts

The Delta One hard-sided TUMI “19 Degree” amenity kit averages out to 3.2/5 .  That’s a very good score for a domestic Business Class amenity kit, and beats out jetBlue’s kit by a good half a point.  At least for now, Delta offers a best in class domestic amenity kit.  It’s a nice bonus on top of a solid all-around hard and soft product.

A Complete Guide to Delta Fare Classes — and How to Score an Upgrade

Here's what you need to know about Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort+, and Main Cabin.

travel kit delta

Cabin Classes on Delta

How to choose a cabin class, fare class breakdown, how miles are earned, how to redeem miles for upgrades.

Courtesy of Delta

Flying Delta? Before you book your flight, take a look through our guide to Delta's cabin classes, which range from Delta One to basic economy. Discover the benefits associated with each class — and find out how to get upgraded from one to another using miles.

Delta One and Delta One Suites

Delta One is Delta's business-class product with lie-flat seats. (Delta One Suites are the same class of service, but the seats have a half-height sliding door for additional privacy.) These are most frequently used on transcontinental domestic flights as well as long-haul international routes.

Seats: While all Delta One seats are lie-flat, the specific design varies per aircraft, and some seats are better than others — some are quite old, offer little privacy, or require you to climb over your neighbor to reach the aisle. When booking a flight, you can usually look up what type of aircraft you'll be flying, but that's always subject to change before departure. You're not guaranteed a specific aircraft, and you might end up with an inferior Delta One seat if there's an equipment swap.

Meals: Delta One passengers are served plated hot meals; alcoholic beverages are complimentary.

Amenities: Delta One passengers receive an amenity kit with Grown Alchemist toiletries, noise-canceling headphones to use during the flight, and a mattress pad for the seat (on some flights).

Baggage Allowance: Delta One passengers can check two bags weighing up to 70 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: Delta One passengers are granted access to Delta's lounges, known as the Sky Club. They're also given Sky Priority check-in and early boarding.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta's premium economy product. This is the newest cabin class, and it falls in between Delta One and Comfort+. Only some of Delta's fleet has this cabin — it's most commonly found on long-haul international routes.

Seats: Seats are not lie-flat, but they're more spacious and have a deeper recline than economy. They also have footrests for additional comfort.

Meals: Premium Select meals are not plated like those in Delta One, but they're more elevated compared to economy dishes. Alcoholic beverages are complimentary.

Amenities: Premium Select passengers enjoy a scaled-back version of the Delta One amenity kit — Grown Alchemist lip balm, an eye mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, ear plugs, and socks — as well noise-canceling headphones. Bedding includes a memory foam pillow and a blanket.

Baggage Allowance: Premium Select passengers can check two bags weighing up to 50 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: At check-in, Premium Select passengers can use the Sky Priority desk, and they're given earlier boarding.

First Class

Delta's first class is the top cabin class on most domestic and short-haul international flights. (Delta planes don't have both Delta One and first class; they'll have one or the other.)

Seats: Seats are more akin to spacious armchairs, not like economy's benches with armrests. They do not lie-flat, but they do have extra recline.

Meals: Meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day. Some flights enjoy hot meals, others have cold dishes, and a few have extensive snack baskets.

Amenities: First-class passengers are given either earbuds or noise-canceling headphones, depending on the plane and route.

Baggage Allowance: First-class passengers can check two bags weighing up to 70 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: First-class passengers are given Sky Priority check-in and can board the aircraft first. They are not granted Sky Club access.

Comfort+

Comfort+ is technically in the economy cabin, but it offers a higher class of service and more legroom than Main Cabin seats. It can be found on all Delta aircraft on all routes.

Seats: The seats are standard economy seats, but they have more legroom than those in Main Cabin. They're also located in the front of the plane.

Meals: Meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day. On long-haul flights, you'll be served a hot meal; otherwise, you'll just be offered snacks. Most notably, alcoholic beverages are free for Comfort+ passengers.

Amenities: On long-haul international flights, Comfort+ passengers are given an eye mask and earplugs. On all flights, Comfort+ passengers are offered earbuds.

Baggage Allowance: If you're in Comfort+, you'll have to pay to check a bag. You can take a carry-on and personal item on board for free.

Other Perks: Comfort+ boards before passengers in Main Cabin.

Main Cabin is the standard economy class, found on all Delta planes on all routes.

Seats: You know the drill — economy seats are fairly small with limited legroom. Main Cabin passengers can pay to sit in an exit row for more space.

Meals: As with Comfort+, meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day: you'll either get a hot meal or snacks. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Amenities: Main Cabin passengers are given earbuds. On overnight flights, you may be offered a blanket and pillow.

Baggage Allowance: Main Cabin passengers are allowed one personal item and one carry-on bag; checked bags cost extra.

Basic Economy

Basic economy lies within the same area as Comfort+ and Main Cabin — that is, the economy cabin — but it's a heavily restricted and therefore discounted fare.

Seats: Basic economy seats are the same as those in Main Cabin.

Meals: Basic economy passengers are served the same meal as those in Main Cabin; alcoholic beverages can be purchased.

Baggage Allowance: You must pay for checked bags, but a carry-on and personal item are free.

Amenities: Basic economy passengers are given earbuds. On overnight flights, you may be offered a blanket and pillow.

Other Perks: There are no other perks given to basic economy passengers, unless you count the discounted fare.

Choosing a cabin class is largely a personal choice, factoring in budget and comfort. The one rule we tend to stand by, though, is skipping basic economy if you your budget allows. It's the most restrictive ticket, as you won't be able to pick your seat in advance, meaning you'll likely end up in the middle, nor will you be able to earn frequent flier miles.

If you thought you were only picking a cabin class, think again. Fare classes are specific codes that ultimately indicate the price and terms (whether you can get an upgrade, refund, or more) of a specific ticket. Within each cabin, there are numerous fare classes: With Delta, there are around 20 standard fare classes overall, plus a handful of exceptions such as ones for award tickets (that is, those booked with miles) and upgraded fares. Full-fare tickets cost more than discounted fare tickets, but it's really difficult to pick your fare class.

Delta's website typically shows one to two fare classes per cabin when booking online: fully refundable and non-refundable. "If you're looking for full-fare tickets you can generally buy those online, but if you need to specify a particular fare class, you'll need to call and speak to an agent," says Gary Leff, travel expert at View From the Wing .

Now, why does fare class even matter? For most fliers, it probably won't, as it's more of a technical detail for the airlines to manage inventory. But fare class sometimes does make a difference to those chasing status — higher fare classes command higher prices and therefore more Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs), Delta's metric for earning elite status. So, if you're a status chaser, it might behoove you to book a higher fare class to earn more MQDs.

If you want to figure out your fare class, look for a letter in parentheses. "Once the search starts, Delta displays the actual fare code with a letter, say Z for discount business or D for more flexible business, typically at a higher price point," says Gilbert Ott, director of partnerships at Point.me .

Delta's loyalty program is called SkyMiles , and it's fairly straightforward to earn miles through it. Once you sign up for a free SkyMiles account, you will earn a certain number of miles per dollar spent on flights, regardless of your cabin class. But the number of miles does increase for those with elite status. Here are the SkyMiles earning rates based on status tier.

After booking your ticket, you may be offered a chance to upgrade to a higher cabin class using cash or SkyMiles via the app or website — but not always. And if you're offered a deal, the rate presented might differ from your travel companion.

"Delta is among the best in the world with data collection and partner data sharing. The airline has been able to glean brilliant insights by understanding how people spend in their daily lives thanks to their Amex partnership, Starbucks, and more," says Ott. "This allows them to personalize offers based on a variety of factors to incentivize behavior. Some airlines can discern that a person has more to spend and if they just try the better experience, they might love it and buy it outright."

But because of this, it's not reliable to hold out for an award upgrade, since there's no regularity. "Delta doesn't want to make it easy and predictable to get a good buy-up offer, or else you'll just wait for that — they'd be undercutting their own pricing," says Leff. "Their goal is to extract revenue they wouldn't otherwise receive when discounting." So, if you really want that higher cabin class, your best bet is to pay up at the get-go.

And even if you're offered an award upgrade, is it a good deal in the first place? Well, it's better for your wallet to spend miles rather than dollars, but Delta SkyMiles isn't necessarily the most valuable rewards program out there.

"SkyMiles has done its best to reduce the value you're going to get for your points so that it's rare to get an outsized return. In my experience, Delta miles are worth less than those of most competitors," says Leff. "That's even frequently true when redeeming miles for partner business class awards, although the best value for SkyMiles awards is when your trip doesn't touch the United States — for example, Mexico to Europe rather than the U.S. to Europe."

There's no right or wrong way to spend your miles, so you'll have to weigh your specific situation before making any decisions. Ott says, "It really depends on the value being offered at the time, and how your cash finances relate to your Delta SkyMiles points balances."

Delta is changing how it boards passengers starting May 1

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News

Delta Air Lines is changing its boarding process beginning May 1 in an effort to speed up loading passengers onto planes.

If you're flying on the airline, you'll have to know what zone number you're in to board in the correct sequence. The move is hardly innovative, experts say, and instead reflects a return to the traditional way of boarding passengers followed by most airlines.

That's because Delta is introducing numbered boarding zones for all flights, meaning that customers will have a zone number assigned to them instead of boarding groups labelled by airline status or fare class, such as "Sky Priority." The airline stressed that boarding orders will not change, but the group names will.

When Delta introduced its branded fare boarding process in 2018, it called zone boarding "a thing of the past." But the airline is now reverting to the traditional way of boarding people, in what some experts call an unusual move for an innovative airline.

Customers who need more assistance will still pre-board as usual before passengers in Zone 1, which will comprise Delta One and First Class customers. Zone 2 will include Diamond Medallion Members and Delta Premium Select ticket holders.

Delta Comfort+ customers will board in Zone 3, followed by Sky Priority in Zone 4, according to a  chart  on the airline's website. Zone numbers will go up to 8, when basic economy passengers will board.

Delta said the change is small, but could make the process easier for infrequent fliers and non-English speakers who only have to listen for a number to know when it's their turn to board. The change will also make the process less stressful for gate agents, Delta added.

Still, some travel experts questioned whether the change would meaningfully speed up the boarding process.

"They're not changing who boards when or the sequence," Clarkson University professor John Milne, an expert on airline boarding, told CBS MoneyWatch. "All they are changing is the names of what passenger group boards next."

In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, Delta said the "simple change" will "provide customers more clarity into the boarding sequence and make the boarding process more intuitive—especially for infrequent travelers and/or customers who might face a language barrier at the gate."

Delta added, "Numbered zones will also align more closely with our joint venture and international partners, providing international customers a more simplified, consistent experience when traveling on mixed-metal itineraries. "

CEO Ed Bastian addressed the change on the company's first quarter earnings call Wednesday. "When you have a number and you're standing in line, we are all trained to know when it's our turn," Bastian said.

Superficial changes?

The change is fairly superficial, Milne said, noting there are other changes Delta and its competitors could make to boarding processes that would make them more efficient.

The airline still prioritizes passengers with airline status or who paid for a higher class fare on a particular flight. Instead, it would be more efficient to board passengers based on where on the aircraft they are seated, Milne said.

For example, boarding window seat customers in the back half of the plane first would speed up the process. "That way you would minimize some of the congestion," he said.

Delta instead assigns passengers to boarding groups based on their loyalty to the airline and ticket prices.

Travel expert Scott Keyes also emphasized that the change does little to meaningfully improve or expedite the boarding process. All Delta is doing is reverting to the traditional way of boarding passengers and scrapping its branded boarding process that began in 2018, he noted.

"The fact that they've reverted to numbered zones, like those employed by virtually all other airlines, speaks volumes," Keyes said. "Traditionally, Delta has been seen as the innovative airline and others have followed suit. In this case, Delta's innovation didn't pan out, and they've been forced to once again mimic American and United's boarding processes."

To be sure, any move that would actually speed up passenger boarding could give an airline a leg up on competitors.

"Speeding up the boarding process by even 10 minutes can prevent delays, and if sustained, allow airlines to add an additional daily flight to the schedule," Keyes said.

The airline posted a $37 million first-quarter profit on Wednesday and said demand for air travel is strong heading into the busy summer travel season. Travelers are flocking to book trips despite a string of recent air safety incidents, including a panel blowing off a Boeing 737 Max aircraft during an Alaska Airlines flight.

Los Angeles International Airport

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) have finished the second-to-last major phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project, with Terminal 3 now offering another entry point via the west headhouse as well as a dedicated check-in area for its Delta One customers.

Delta made a commitment to become L.A.’s premier, premium airline more than a decade ago and quickly became the fastest-growing airline at the airport. LAX continues to serve as one of Delta’s most important coastal hubs, operating more than 150 peak-day departures to 55 destinations across the globe to destinations like Hawaii and Mexican beaches as well as to 19 of the top 20 markets for LA customers.

recent network developments

On Dec. 4, Delta will launch a seasonal route to Brisbane, Australia , operating three times per week.

Investments

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports unveiled the final major phase of the years-long, $2.3 billion Delta Sky Way at LAX project in August 2023, with Terminal 3 at LAX now directly connected to the Tom Bradley International Terminal via moving airside walkways, officially eliminating the need for busing between terminals.

The airline’s west headhouse and Delta One check-in area opened to customers in June 2023, providing another entry point for check-in and security access.

Delta’s new Terminal 3, a 1.2-million-square-foot, 27-gate complex, debuted last April, featuring a centralized check-in lobby, expanded security checkpoint and baggage claim area, as well as a state-of-the-art Delta Sky Club, one of the largest in Delta’s system. Nine additional new gates, new concessions and spacious seating areas opened to customers in October 2022.

Delta Sky Club

LAX features two Delta Sky Clubs. With both Clubs operational, approximately 800 guests can enjoy the lounges simultaneously.

At over 30,000 square feet, the Delta Sky Club at LAX Sky Way, the newest Club at LAX, is one of the largest in the Delta network, with ample space for guests to retreat, relax and recharge. This Club features:

  • Five self-service kiosk stations for check-in.
  • A year-round, all-weather Sky Deck where guests can enjoy drinks from the premium bar and panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills.
  • Seating options for a wide variety of travelers, including private phone booths for quiet work and theater-style seating for viewing the media wall.
  • Spacious shower rooms.
  • The Gallery at LAX, which features pieces curated through Delta Sky Club’s art program and include digital creations, sculpture and large-scale mixed media works featuring local L.A. artists.

Delta One Lounge

Delta will bring the premium experience to the west coast with the opening of the LAX premium lounge featuring an exclusive outdoor terrace. The 10,000-plus-square-foot space will be directly accessible by elevator from the Delta One check-in area and is expected to be complete by the end of 2024.

The west headhouse, which features self-service kiosks to drop bags and/or print boarding passes, gives customers another entry point to easily check in and get to security. Later this summer, Delta expects to implement digital ID technology at bag drop and security checkpoints, allowing eligible customers to use their biometric data to more seamlessly move through the airport.

Delta air lines to remove bag recheck requirement on us-bound flights with connections.

The requirement could be removed for passengers flying from Tokyo Haneda and Seoul Incheon.

Delta Air Lines is looking to remove bag recheck requirements for passengers flying from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), from where the airline flies to six points in the United States, easing the process for domestic transfers within the country.

Dealing with a challenging experience

Jeff Moomaw, the Vice President of Asia at Delta Air Lines, told Japan-based The Mainichi that the carrier was looking to eliminate the baggage recheck requirement for travelers flying between HND and the US, as well as those hopping across the Pacific Ocean from Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN).

According to Moomaw, the airline is currently working with Japanese and US authorities to introduce the change at the end of 2024. The executive noted that anyone who has traveled with an onward connection within the US knows that rechecking baggage was a “difficult” experience, with the airline hopefully eliminating it “soon.”

A Brief Guide To North American & European Baggage Allowances

Rechecking baggage upon arrival.

Currently, passengers not traveling through preclearance airports approved by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have to recheck their bags when entering the US from an international destination. According to CBP, preclearance operations began in Toronto, Canada, in 1952 and have since expanded to Aruba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In total, there are 15 preclearance airports globally.

US Customs & Border Preclearance At Irish Airports: Everything You Need To Know

Kevin K. McAleenan, Deputy Commissioner at the CBP, said that the US needs to secure international travel while also facilitating growth and providing a pleasant experience for those arriving in the country.

“International travel to the U.S. continues to grow at 4 percent to 5 percent each year since 2009. We need to encourage this growth while addressing threats to commercial aviation as early as possible in the travel cycle.”

234 Million Passengers: The Top US Airports For International Traffic In 2023

Delta air lines' network in japan.

According to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium , Delta Air Lines has 42 weekly flights originating at HND and landing in the US in April 2024. The six airports are Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), and Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

The airline does not serve any other airport in Japan. Meanwhile, it operates flights to four US airports from ICN: ATL, DTW, MSP, and SEA. While in April, Delta has scheduled ten weekly flights from ICN to ATL, totaling 31 weekly itineraries between ICN and the US, by May, the carrier will operate 14 weekly flights from ICN to ATL. As such, the carrier will operate 35 weekly one-way flights from ICN to the US.
