BRINK Traveler

BRINK Traveler gives users the ability to see some of the most amazing places on Earth from the comfort of their own homes. While there are currently only 17 locations for users to visit, the additional features make each one a true travel experience that may push them to travel in real life as well .

Virtual guides can explain the features and history of each spot, and an in-app camera allows users to take all the pictures they would want if they were to visit in person. Another great feature is the ability to travel in multiplayer mode, which lets users meet up with friends from anywhere while getting a remarkable view at the same time.

OtherSight is one of the most interactive travel apps out there because it specifically focused on including usable objects in every location. Currently, users only have the option of going to four different locations, but there's a lot that they can do at each one.

Users can visit churches, streets, and museums and really get a sense of how it feels to be there. The scale, texture, and movement qualities of interactive features are especially well done. While this is a fairly limited app at the moment, the developers are working on new locations, which can provide future explorations.

It is a physically navigable terrain, which creates a greater level of immersion than standard point-and-click systems. The one downside to the app, beyond its price, is that it takes up a lot of space, requiring a lot of memory and a strong internet signal while downloading.

Alcove is not technically a travel app, but it does offer a number of virtual tour experiences for free. The app itself is a virtual home, where users can download different in-app features depending on their interests. The travel features do include a number of tours on the ground, under the sea, and even in the sky, narrated by some of the most thorough guides available in VR.

The limitation of the app is that each experience is entirely pre-determined. There are no interactive features that would make it more immersive. However, given that it is free and has such incredible visual quality, that might be a sacrifice worth making.

ecoshpere is a collection of fantastic 360-degree exploration videos. But they’re not your typical 360 videos!

The ones in ecosphere are beautifully narrated documentaries that add to the element of immersion. You have over 10 episodes to download and start your virtual adventure. Learn more about locations such as Africa, Malaysia, and Indonesia from the comfort of your Oculus Quest 2.

What’s even more is that ecosphere is getting constant support with new updates and features, so the future for 360 travel is looking really good on this app!

There’s one big reason I’d like everybody to at least give Alcove a try: variety. Okay, there are two big reasons. It’s also free. But let’s talk about the first one more.

While not being big on high-end graphics, Alcove does a fantastic job of letting you go on a tour in virtual reality. The game includes virtual tours across hundreds of landscapes and beautiful sites around the world. Ride hot air balloons or go for long drives in VR.

What’s more is that you can even take to the seas of Australia and the Pacific Ocean!

That’s not even where the possibilities end. Alcove allows you to customize your personal vacation home in VR, and invite your friends over to appreciate it even more.

Although the majority of minigames like Chess and Puzzles are single-player, Alcove is constantly receiving fresh updates and new features. The opportunity to do more with your friends may not be far off!

First, let’s address the elephant in the room: Google Earth VR. When it comes to travelling experiences, everybody should have at least heard of this app.

You’ll especially like this app if you’re interested in knowing what the less popular “tourist sites” are like!

However, the images surrounding you are static. You can feel like you are in a time freeze or bullet time moments like in “ The Matrix ” film or “ Max Payne ” game. But it does not stop you from having fun.

2) Oculus TV

Oculus TV is one of the apps that we use quite regularly. It contains many wonderful and high quality virtual tour videos that can make mesmerized. Some of the content creator produce videos with awesome quality like AirPano .

You can turnaround and rotate 360-degree or 180-degree (depending on the video). Unfortunately, you cannot move forward and backward like Wander.

3) BRINK Traveler

BRINK Traveler is one of the wonderful virtual tour apps that can bring you to some of the most majestic and breathtaking locations on earth. Review: Meta Quest 2

I live in Oregon, and my state is on fire. The sky outside my window is a ruddy yellow-brown, imagine the foggiest day of your life and throw a sepia filter over it. That’s Portland right now. The air smells like a million-acre campfire and tastes bitter on your tongue. For a few hours as the sun sets, the sky becomes the color of spilt blood, and the sun looks like the eye of an angry god burning a hole in the world. It’s all a bit on the nose isn’t it?

Before the fires, VR had been an oasis from the crushing familiarity of an apartment I couldn’t leave. Now it’s even more of a refuge. When I’m wearing the Meta Quest 2 (originally called the Oculus Quest 2) I can’t see the stinging smoke or angry sky, and I breathe just a little easier. It’s a different kind of escapism than I get out of watching Peaky Blinders or playing Spiritfarer . It’s hard to engage with media in any meaningful (or escapist) way when even the sunlight is burning. Unless that media can take you by the hand and lead you into a different world.

Typically, tethered-to-a-desktop-PC VR is a real production to pull off. I have to clear some space, plug all the boxes and cables in, make sure the main cable isn’t knotted or kinked, put on my headset, adjust the straps, take it off, adjust the fit again, then fire up the game launcher. After that, I play for a few minutes while trying to stay hyper aware of the position of the cable so I don't yank it out, and constantly peek through the bottom of the headset so I don't trip on it and slam a hand into my desk (again).

It was even worse in the external-sensor days, when I’d have to position sensor lighthouses around the room to track my movements. If there wasn’t someone else there to handle all the setup and cables, being in VR was less immersive than watching a movie or playing a non-VR game. It’s easy to sink into a story playing out on screen when I'm reclined on a couch with the lights off. In VR, the constant need to be aware of my surroundings always split my attention in two and cooled down my excitement for virtual gaming.

The Oculus Quest was the first headset to change that. It doesn't require any cords or a PC. It plays games all on its own, unless you want to tether to a PC for ultra-high-end experiences. It was the first headset that made me excited for VR. And I wasn't alone. It flew off the shelves. Demand greatly outpaced supply, likely because it was a headset for people who didn’t want to set aside an entire room for VR. With the Quest, you could just clear a spot in your living room, or even just stay seated on the couch, and you were all set.

The last couple of days, I’ve taken my breaks with the $399 Meta Quest 2 . Like its predecessor, it connects to my Wi-Fi and plays games all by itself, with two wireless motion controllers, a sleeker white design, and a few new abilities.

I tend to slide it on, plug some noise-canceling headphones into the headphone jack (it has speakers, but I like full immersion), and spend a little time with Quill the mouse knight from Moss . Sometimes I just open YouTube VR and watch high-resolution wildlife videos. Scuttling crabs, pristine beaches, primeval forests—I’ve visited them all with the Quest 2.

When I really need to sink into another world for a while, I close Slack for the day, eat a cannabis gummy, and spend some time playing Rez Infinite . Soaring through a ’90s version of cyberspace to a gentle, thumping synth soundtrack is a great way to forget about the ever-encroaching wildfires, if only for a while.

The Meta Quest 2 is smaller than the original Quest, a bit lighter, less front-heavy—that’s impressive considering the displays are higher-res than ever before. It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing your dad’s binoculars on your face anymore. The head strap is looser; it’s all fabric now instead of semirigid soft-touch plastic. It’s a change I have mixed feelings about.

The fabric straps are much more comfortable, and they’re a bit easier to adjust. Problem is, the previous version’s head strap was shaped to sort of cradle the back of your head—and it had a hole I could tuck my ponytail through. This new one doesn’t, so it tends to slide down your nose a little bit over time, like a pair of glasses. It doesn't slide much, but it is noticeable if you don’t have the straps adjusted just right .

Meta plans to roll out some accessories to give players options when it comes to straps. The forthcoming Pro Strap is rigid and similar to the one on the Oculus Rift S . It's meant to provide a more reliable base if you’re playing physically active VR games. Additionally, the company plans to release a battery pack that attaches to the Pro Strap, doubling the battery life you’ll get out of the Quest 2, which is normally about two to three hours.

Adjusting pupillary distance is also a bit different on the Quest 2. On the previous model, there was a little slider underneath the visor you’d use to find the right pupil distance so you could see clearly; you’d adjust it while the headset was on your head. To set your pupil distance on the Quest 2, you need to take the headset off, move the lenses a bit, put the headset back on, and try again until you get it just right for your eyes. Thankfully, it’s a one-time setup. The lenses stay put, and since there’s no external slider, you won’t accidentally bump them out of the correct position when you’re fumbling for the volume rocker. But if more than one person uses your Quest 2, the tougher setup might annoy you.

In the past couple of years, Meta has carefully sanded down all the edges that made VR such a prickly proposition for many gamers. Jumping in and out of VR is even more seamless with the Quest 2, thanks to the introduction of hand tracking.

With the Quest 2, you can use your hands instead of the controllers. Seeing the headset render your hands and perfectly catch their every movement in VR is pretty cool. You can even make certain rude gestures and see them in VR. The hand tracking doesn’t like when you put your hands together, though. It loses sight of them as soon as your palms touch.

It's more of a proof of concept than a practical feature. There aren’t many games or experiences that support hand tracking, so you’re mostly limited to navigating the Quest 2’s menus. But even something as simple as swiping through the Meta Store with nothing but your hands is a really cool experience that makes me excited for the future of this technology.

Meta is investing heavily in the Quest 2. In fact, it’s the company's new flagship headset. The Oculus Rift S is being discontinued, as is the previous Quest. They’re headed to a lovely farm upstate where they can run wild and free with other retired headsets like the Oculus Go . It’s a smart move. The Quest 2 is the best Oculus headset by far. At about $300 when it hits shelves October 13 (you can preorder it), with top-notch tethered and untethered VR capabilities, the Meta Quest 2 delivers on the promise of VR in ways other headsets never have, and that’s exciting for the future.

Initially, the Quest 2 required a Facebook account, but that is thankfully no longer the case. It still requires you make a Meta account for digital purchases through the app store. Still, the deepening of ties between Oculus and Meta won’t sit well with some players, and for good reason. It’s not paranoia to think critically about who you’re giving your data to and how they might use it.

The Quest 2 is a stellar piece of hardware, peerless in the VR space, but make sure you’re making an informed purchase. I recommend you read up on Facebook’s more-recent controversies , especially how the company handles (and has mishandled) user data , before taking the plunge.

Places to visit in Wander

NOTE: We’re gonna tell you a little about the app and give you some pointers and tips before we get to the places to visit . You can scroll down past this till you get to Machu Pichu and start there if you’d like…

Wander is an app that we got right away, but really didn’t understand it . In some ways, it’s basically Google Streetview. You can visit anywhere on the planet that:

Google has mapped with Streetview
Someone has uploaded a 360 image to Google Maps

How do I get the most from Wander?

The key to Wander is to know where to visit to see the most interesting places with the best images . The problem is that the app makes this a bit tricky . They do have a curated list they created, but even that can be hit or miss .

Here’s a few tips to make your time easier. There are 2 different ways you will get to see views in Wander.

These are lines where Google has Street View images . These tend to be the highest quality (not always) and also optimized so they load faster . But, especially in remote places, you may not find many , nor the best vantage points as we’ll point out in the image below.
These are taken by random people as well as by the Google crew , but there is no way to know which. This means that some of them are not that great and others are spectacular.
That being said, in some locations , these are the only ways to see the area. Especially in remote locations. You will often find hikers will have trekked to places you will never find Street View and they have taken 360 images for you to see.

Where to go first?

So many places to choose from. We’re going to start with what has to be one of the most amazing sites to see in Wander, Machu Pichu . There are so many paths and trails with fantastic Street View options that you could spend weeks exploring and not see it all. This doesn’t even include any of the Blue dots.

Screen shots and video don’t do this justice , but the video is a step better , so we did a few for you to watch.

Things to note in video 1:

I use the Zoom Feature
I use the Satellite Feature
I move the map by pointing and pressing and holding the front trigger
Then I just point at one of the Blue lines on the map and it’s like I’m there!
At one point, you will see me click an arrow that points at the wall and next thing I’m on the other side of the wall!
When I focus on the window, you can see it’s where we were before.

Things to note in video 2:

I will follow one of the paths as if I was there.
The amazing view of the wall construction.
When I look up at the 3 “windows” then follow the path up to the room where those windows are.

To get to Machu Pichu in Wander, just open it up, then click the Map icon on the left and search for Machu Pichu . It will drop you right in the middle. You should know how to zoom and use the map now.

We suggest you create a Folder in Favorites as show in the video above. Then open that folder as you travel around and Favorite the images you like the most. Then you can go back there later.

Next to Petra, Jordan

Petra is an ancient city carved entirely from the rocks there. Like Machu Pichu, there are many paths and trails with fantastic Street View options that you could spend weeks exploring and not see it all. There aren’t quite as many paths, so the Blue dots are more important here.

Things to note in video 1, the Nabatean Theater:

The Blue dot I am in on the map is an amazing overview of the theater. See if you can put yourself there.
Try the other Blue dots, they give you a different perspective .
The Blue lines with Street View here are fantastic!
When I’m in Street View in the theater and my pointer shows a blue disc , I can click and go there! If the disc is white, it won’t do anything.
Oops, we didn’t Favorite this spot, so I can’t tell you where it is. Hunting for it should be fun. If you find it, let us know! 🙂

To get to Petra, Jordan in Wander, just open it up, then click the Map icon on the left and search for Petra, Jordan tomb . If you just search for Petra, Jordan, it will land you in the middle of the city of Petra, which can be fun in itself. If that happens, the ancient city will be to the left of you on the map.

Jeita Grotto Cave in Lebanon & Preikenstolen, Norway

Lebanon is full of Wander locations. You can find this list in the Collections Icon on the main dashboard .

8 Fascinating VR Travel Apps for Oculus

I haven’t mentioned it much, if at all, on this blog, but I LOVE VR . There’s a whole debate about whether or not it’s worth it… if it’ll survive or just die out.. how well it compares to more traditional gaming platforms… etc.

IMO we’re on track to be living some version of Ready Player One relatively soon.

I have an Oculus Quest . It’s definitely not the most robust VR headset option, but probably the biggest draw for me about the Quest was not being attached to anything by a cord, and being able to travel with it and use it anywhere .

VR Adventures in the Age of ‘Rona

There are a lot of VR games, apps , and videos out there. Which you can use depends on the headset you have access to. The Oculus Go has some games that aren’t compatible with the Oculus Quest, and visa versa.

The good news is that game and app libraries for all VR platforms are growing constantly.

So when many of us are stuck at home for a good chunk of our days, going slowly insane from staring at the same. rooms. day. in. and. day. out . VR offers some awesome escapes while keeping the risk of getting Covid to a happy minimum.

Oculus Quest Games for Virtual Exploration

There are a lot of great VR games out there (Beatsaber is seriously addicting) but for the sake of this post I’ve put together a list of the best VR travel apps and games.

I should probably give a bit of a disclaimer here: This is a relatively non-traditional VR travel list. The Quest doesn’t have a ton of purely travel-centric games, so I found ones that scratch the wanderlust itch, even if they’re not strictly “travel” genre.

I also went a little outside the box when picking apps for the other Oculus headsets as well, because some of the best vr games and apps for avid adventurers , in my opinion, aren’t 100% just “we’re going to the place.” It’s about the overall experience, ya know?

They’re picked either for being purely travel-centric or involving some sort of exploration adventure .

Outdoor Adventures

National geographic explore vr.

I couldn’t pick a more obvious choice for this list, I mean , it’s National Geographic.

As of now you can explore 2 VERY different places within this app: Antarctica and Machu Picchu. I hope they’ll be adding more at some point.

This is designated as an app in the oculus store but I felt like it leaned more toward an actual game. There are small but interesting objectives along each trip, and you constantly have the option to pick up your camera and snap some cool shots.

I expected this to be more of a cinematic experience, where you’re basically along for the ride, but you’re in control of most of your actions. You can explore relatively freely and check out the surroundings at your leisure.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and entertainment of this VR adventure.

Available on Oculus Quest | Go

This probably feels the most like a traditional video game – with the bonus VR immersion. You get to climb your way through multiple environments around the world, working your way through levels and challenges, and the views are amazballs.

It’s not for those that have any sort of vertigo issues, and you may want to opt for sitting down while playing. I found myself leaning quite a bit and every now and then feeling a bit unsteady when I looked down.

Purely Travel

This is the most straightforward, nail-on-the-head, travel app for Oculus.

If you get mesmerized by the visuals of new places or want to re-experience somewhere you’ve been before, Wander might be your dream Oculus app.

I really like photography , drone videos, 360 videos etc. because I get really interested in the visuals of places I visit. I enjoy getting lost in looking if that makes sense? Wander essentially gives you the next best thing to actually traveling to a new place.

Using Google Streetview, Wander allows you to “wander” through almost any part of the world. It’s a 360 view so you can really take in everything around you.

You can choose a place to visit by searching, or randomly select a spot. You can navigate your way around using a mini-map, or simply pick a direction and follow the arrows. You can also choose to travel by available years to see the areas during different points in time.

I wandered through Amsterdam (one of my favorite cities), revisited a small town in England, including the place I stayed when I was there, and checked out some historical sites in Spain.

Otherworldly Exploration

Fujii takes you through what I would best describe as a psychedelic garden world . I can only assume the creators decided to make the game after a good shroom session.

It is a beautiful, relaxing experience. It’s calm, colorful escapism.

I didn’t love the controls, because you have to teleport everywhere, rather than “walk” smoothly, and figuring out how to orient myself took a minute. You also have to figure out how to move on through sort of “organic” puzzles. It’s hard to describe.

I’d still recommend it even with the few drawbacks because it’s just a lovely world to be immersed into. It would also be a great game for kids, if that’s a concern for you when searching for VR games.

Tour of Six Real Exoplanets

Ok fine! I’m cheating a bit here. It’s not a “game” per se. It’s a video. From Youtube. But it’s 360 and you can watch it with basically any VR system that you can access Youtube on. And it’s RAD.

Genuinely one of my favorite (and first) VR experiences as far as videos go. The narration is great, the information is interesting, the visuals are STUNNING.

It’s my blog. I love space videos and photos, they’re amazing. I’m putting this video on the list. Deal with it. I realize I’m getting a little defensive about this and to be fair you haven’t even said anything yet because I literally have not published this ( unless you’re currently reading it, then I have ) BUT STILL.

Ugh. I am SO upset this isn’t available for the Quest. Chernobyl is one of my bucket list spots (abandoned/haunted/creepy places hold a special place in my heart) but to be fair, I have no desire to go there right now…

Wonders of the World

A travel experience in more ways than one – around the world, and through time! I have a thing for historical places. I think they speak to that same interest in cultures and places that are vastly different from your personal norm.

Wonders of the World lets you explore ancient cities while learning about the history and culture of the places you’re visiting.

During each experience, you’re given a new character and role to take on which relates to the context of the historical setting.

The graphics in Wonders of the World aren’t the most impressive, but they look like they’re meant to be stylized to some point. This game is also currently free, so it won’t even cost you anything to check it out.

Meeting Rembrandt

Another historical trip, albeit this one is quite a bit different from Wonders of the World. This VR experience takes you to 1600s Amersterdam to… well, meet Rembrandt.

Spend time and interact with the painter who is brought to life by a real actor as you move through the virtual world with him.

It’s a magical blend of VR and real humans brought together beautifully to tell the story of a famous historical figure in a much more personal way. The graphics aren’t perfect but any lack is made up for by the overall experience. A truly unique and wonderful VR project.

Traveling While Black

I cannot recommend this VR experience highly enough. It’s particularly relevant considering the current state of the U.S., but it would be noteworthy at any time.

It’s SO well done, guys. It’s a short movie-going (ish) experience. You’re moved from place to place as the story is told, between past times and the present. You start in a theater but are soon moved to physical places more relevant to the narration and storytellers.

You’ll hear stories and experiences of being black in America, past and present, from some people you may be familiar with, some you may not. The focus is of course on “traveling while black” but it’s not completely restricted to that.

For those who are unfamiliar with The Negro Motorist Green Book or The Negro Travelers’ Green Book – AKA the “Green Book” – it was a guide created by Victor Hugo Green to help black travelers find businesses they could utilize while traveling in a time when many were explicitly or implicitly “whites only.”

This VR experience is also FREE, so there’s not excuse not to check it out!

If you aim to have the latest VR headset in your entertainment arsenal, the Oculus Quest 2 is the way to go. It’s a direct successor to the popular standalone Quest, and it builds on a number of the best qualities of the original. Here’s everything you need to know about the Oculus Quest 2.

While the new headset looks similar to the Oculus Quest in many ways, the differences certainly offer reasons to consider an upgrade. We’ll touch on everything you could ever wonder about the setup, from controllers to comfort, and much more. Ready to alter your reality? Let’s get started.

What is the Oculus Quest 2?

The new Oculus Quest 2 is the much-hyped sequel to the original Quest, which launched in May of 2019. Oculus’ Quest 2 launched in October 2020 and sports minor design changes, mainly on the headset itself. For starters, the Quest 2 dons a white finish instead of the black of the Quest.

It’s a fully standalone system, so you can take your games on the go without fear of tangled cables. You can also choose from 64GB and 256GB versions, retailing at $299 and $399 respectively. The updated Quest 2 also packs on the pixels, with a per-eye resolution of 1,832 x 1,920. It rounds out the spec sheet with 6GB of RAM and a 90Hz refresh rate, though it’s set to 72Hz straight from the box.

What can you do with the Oculus Quest 2?

The boosted resolution and buttery-smooth refresh rate point to one use above all else – games. Of course, it also helps that the Quest 2 will be the go-to platform as many new games launch over the next year. You can dig into the Oculus Store for the best games around, and you should have more than enough storage space on the 64GB model anyway. We’ll jump into games more in a later section, but know that Oculus announced a whole host of titles along with its new headset.

If gaming isn’t your favorite, there’s still plenty of reason to pick up an Oculus Quest 2. After all, travel is still pretty limited right now – thanks, 2020 – so the Quest 2 is your best bet if you want to explore sunken shipwrecks or interact with elephants on an African safari. You can even strap in for a concert or a live comedy show thanks to the Oculus Venues lineup.

What are the controllers like?

Oculus largely kept the same Touch Controllers from the original Quest, though they’re slightly larger around the tracking ring. It may not make a big difference if you have larger hands, but the change could cause problems for small-handed users. Overall, the design and button layout should feel comfortable and familiar.

The Touch Controllers still mirror one another, and the tracking ring still overlaps with your thumb for a smaller overall profile. They also only require one AA battery apiece.

What’s the difference between the Oculus Quest and Quest 2?

At first glance, the new hotness doesn’t look that much different than the original Quest. One is black, the other white, but there are a number of updates waiting just under the surface. For starters, the new Quest 2 packs a powerful Snapdragon XR2 processor, 90Hz display, and 6GB of RAM. The original Quest, on the other hand, is stuck at 4GB of RAM with a maximum of 128GB of storage.

It doesn’t hurt that the new Quest 2 is more affordable than the original too. It’s lighter, supports just as many games, and allows for up to 256GB of storage. The Quest 2 even jumps from 1,440 x 1,600 pixels per eye up to 1,832 x 1,920. It’s not a clean sweep, however, as the Quest is the only model to pack true blacks thanks to the OLED display. You won’t need a Facebook account to set up your Quest right now, but that is set to change sometime in the future.

Getting started with the Oculus Quest 2

Before you do anything else, you’ll need to make sure that you have a Facebook account if you want to use the Oculus Quest 2. It mostly comes down to how you feel about Facebook itself, but you can always make an account just to use the headset. Otherwise, all you have to do is charge the Quest 2, update the firmware, and download the Oculus app.

Once you’re ready to power up your headset, the next step is to map out your play space. You’ll have to redraw your room every time you change spaces, but it’s all to keep you from running into the walls while you play. The Quest 2 features built-in headphones, but you may want to invest in a good pair of your own for better playback.

What specs do you need?

The best part about a standalone headset is that you don’t need any fancy PC specs or a powerful laptop. As long as you have a phone with enough space for the Oculus app, you should be in business.

Can you get any accessories?

Of course, you can, and you’re probably going to want at least a few. Unfortunately, the Quest 2 doesn’t have the best head strap, and it doesn’t do much to counteract the weight of the headset. Therefore, you’ll probably want to invest in either the Quest 2 Elite Strap or the Elite Battery Strap. The Elite Strap adds more support and a bit more weight to the back of your head, and the Elite Battery Strap allows you to stay in the game much longer.

If you’re considering the Quest 2 as a connected headset, you can also grab the USB-C to USB-C Oculus Link Cable, but the company charges $79 for a 16-foot length. In truth, you’re probably much better off grabbing one from Amazon for $20.

What games can you play?

Like any good pair of siblings, the Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 share the same list of games. All current games will work for both headsets, though they’ll perform a bit better on the newer, more powerful Quest 2. Both the Quest and Quest 2 also support Oculus Link, which allows you to plug them into a gaming PC and dive into PCVR games if you want to.

As for the games themselves, you can pick up everything from classics like Beat Saber to cutting-edge action in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. Superhot VR and Vader Immortal are two other top picks, and you might want to grab Virtual Desktop if you’re planning to give PCVR a shot.

Where to buy the Oculus Quest 2

You can expect to pay the retail price of either $299 or $399 wherever you look. It pretty much just depends on how much you want to pay for shipping and whether or not you have Amazon Prime.

As for buying games, the Oculus Store is your number one choice. Games aren’t as widely available due to the fact that you don’t need a powerful gaming PC, so you should be able to tap into most experiences easily.

How To Play Google Earth VR On Quest 2 (Step By Step Guide)

Google Earth VR is an app I recommend to everyone with a suitable VR headset as it’s fascinating to be able to visit anywhere in the world, exploring some of the most famous landmarks and impressive sights without even leaving your home. With the Meta Quest 2 being the most popular consumer VR headset at present, a lot of people wonder whether you can play Google Earth VR on Quest 2.

To play Google Earth VR on Quest 2, you need to connect to a VR-ready PC via USB cable or wirelessly and load Google Earth VR on the Oculus app or Steam. You can also use a cloud PC service to play Google Earth VR or use an alternative to Google Earth VR that works on Quest 2 in standalone mode.

How To Play Google Earth VR On Quest 2

Google Earth VR is not available natively on Quest 2, so you can’t just go to the Oculus store and download the app on your device. You’ll need to connect to a VR-ready PC to play Google Earth VR and there are a number of ways that you can do this.

Let’s talk you through the different ways you can use Google Earth on your Quest 2 headset.

Connect to A VR Ready PC Using Quest Link To Play Google Earth VR

The simplest option is to use the official Link cable, or a compatible USB-C cable to connect your Meta Quest 2 headset to a VR-ready PC. Here are the steps you’ll need to take to get started.

Go to the Quest 2 website and download and install the Oculus software to your computer.
Open the Oculus app on your desktop.
Search for Google Earth VR using the search box.
Click Get to start installing Google Earth VR on your computer. You may notice that it says that this app is compatible with Rift and Rift S, but does not mention the Quest 2. This is because when you connect your Quest 2 to a VR-ready PC, it is capable of running all of the PC VR games and apps that the Rift headsets can run.
Once this has finished installing, you can turn on your Quest 2 headset .
Connect the Link cable to a suitable USB 3 port on your computer and connect the other end to the USB port on your Quest 2.
Put your headset on once you do this and you will see a prompt that says “ Allow Access To Data “. Click enable .
While wearing your Quest 2, press the Oculus button on your right controller to bring up the Oculus toolbar and click on the quick settings menu on the left side of the toolbar.
Select Quest Link from the Quick Settings menu.
Select the computer that you want to connect to and then click Launch . You will see a confirmation message saying Enable Quest Link and you should click Enable .
Once in the Oculus dashboard, you can navigate to your library and you should see Google Earth VR listed. Just click on this to launch it and you can enjoy visiting anywhere in the world.

Connecting Meta Quest 2 to a VR-ready PC via Quest Link

You do also have the option of installing Google Earth VR on another app store, such as Steam, which you may want to do if most of your other apps and games are on Steam.

Make sure Steam is installed on your VR-ready PC and then open Steam and use the search box to search for Google Earth VR. Install Google Earth VR and then use Quest Link to connect your VR headset to your PC.

Once in the Oculus dashboard, you will need to press the desktop button to see your desktop, and then load Steam. Once Steam is loaded, you can either enter your Steam VR app or simply load Google Earth VR from your library.

Connect Your Quest 2 Wirelessly To A VR-Ready PC

The other option for connecting your Quest 2 to a VR-ready PC is to use a wireless connection. This allows you to use the same functionality as the Quest Link wired connection but without the inconvenience of having a wire tethering you to a PC.

There are a few technical requirements to be aware of. With a perfect setup, this provides a fantastic wireless PC VR experience, but a suboptimal setup may be less than satisfactory. Here is what you need to get the best performance from Air Link for Google Earth VR.

Your PC would be connected to your router via ethernet cable.
You should have a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 router (AC or AX) and your Quest 2 should be connected to this via the 5GHZ band.
Your Wi-Fi router should be in the same room as the headset, in a clear line of sight, and should ideally be placed at least 1m off the ground. connected to a router/access point via Ethernet cable.

My own router is not close to the room that I use for my Quest 2, so I actually bought a new Wi-Fi 6 router and connected it via ethernet cable to my primary router. I have this placed about 1.5m off the ground directly next to where I use my Quest 2, and the performance of Air Link has been fantastic.

Here is how to connect to Air Link once you have your router positioned correctly.

Navigate to the Quest Link option in the Quick settings menu as you did previously when connecting with the Link cable.
Click on your PC from the list and then select Pair .
A pairing code will show in VR. check your computer screen and make sure that you see the same code on the screen.
Click Confirm in the Oculus desktop app and then put your headset on again.
Select Launch to begin using Air Link.

You only need to do this pairing process the first time you connect. For subsequent sessions, you just need to click connect and then confirm.

Once connected via Air Link, you can launch Google Earth VR via the Oculus store or Steam Store and enjoy Google Earth VR on Quest 2 without a wired connection.

Connect To A Cloud PC To Use Google Earth VR On Your Quest 2

The third option you may like to consider is for those people who want to play PC VR titles such as Google Earth VR, but don’t have access to a VR-ready PC. This option involves using a cloud PC service to connect to a VR-ready PC. This is a good way to try out lots of PC VR titles without having the expense of investing in a VR-ready PC.

I have used a service called Plutosphere to play many PC VR games and apps without a PC, and I was quite impressed with the performance. Obviously, this can introduce a greater amount of lag, but I’ve found that if you have fast Wi-Fi and a good internet connection, then lag was largely not a problem. Use An Alternate App On Your Quest 2

Whilst you can’t use Google Earth VR without connecting to a VR-ready PC, there are a number of apps that have a lot of the functionality of Google Earth VR and can be used on the Quest 2 in standalone mode. Let’s look at a few of the options below.

Wander allows you to travel all over the world, visiting famous landmarks, exploring great cities, or even visiting your own neighborhood It uses Google Streetview data but is not an official Google product. You can even go back in time and see what each place looked like several years ago, right back to 2008 in some places.

You can’t look at the world from above or fly around the world in the same way that you can with Google Earth VR, but otherwise, this is a really impressive and enjoyable app to use. Wander is available from the Oculus store for $10 and can be installed directly on the Quest 2.

Wooorld is another really exciting alternative to Google Earth VR that is available for Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro. It uses a combination of VR and AR to let you explore the world from the sky or from street level with your friends. It provides all of the functionality of Google Earth VR and a fair bit more on the Quest 2 in standalone mode while providing a terrific AR experience on the Quest Pro.

The most attractive part about SARLAR is how comfortable it is. For example, the mesh pocket has a zipper to keep everything loose in one area. The mesh seems to keep everything snug when the case is closed. However, the case itself is made of fiber, although not listed as waterproof it most likely will retain water and could damage the oculus on the inside.

The headset and controllers fit well and accommodate the elite head strap perfectly.

Overall, this is a solid sturdy product and is decent for the price, especially seeing that it kind of serves as a “starter pack”, you should opt for it if you are looking for something to easily store your Quest into it.

The only thing that might keep you from buying it immediately is the location of the zipper, relative to the charging port. The double zipper does allow you to close the case and still allow it to charge.

However, because the charging port does not align with the zipper, it has to bend over time. It could cause damage to the engineers could have slightly offset the zipper to create two asymmetrical halves or they could have incorporated a small opening for the cord to pass through.

This case is flawless. It’s every bit as good as the original Oculus case but this one fits the wider headset. In addition, it also has several small pockets to fit all of your straps, booklets, etc.

A strong EVA plastic shell will protect your Oculus Quest VR headset and accessories from falling damage, while an Oxford fabric layer will keep the elements away, and a plush velvet interior with flocking lining that snuggly fits your Oculus headset.

You will be impressed with how well this third-party product is made, especially if you are considering buying the Oculus Quest case, however with this case you will save a few bucks.

4. Kootek Carrying Travel Case : All Quest 2 accessories Case

To be honest, the Kootek case is not spacious enough to store all the different pieces. Only the main unit and the elite head strap could be stored. You will need to adjust the strap in with the dial so it sits in the molded piece of the case.

As the hand controllers sit inside one another, the round part fits into the slot molded into the plastic. The part you grip sits inside the plastic circular piece. It is not sure if the actual controller which they say will fit behind the headset, would actually work. With the added elite head strap, there is very small space.

The top of the lid has a mesh pouch. However, whatever you put in that would have to be thin so it didn’t press on the head strap when you close the lid and zip it up. This would mean you could only store the power cord.

In general, they could have thought this design out a bit better. It should be a bit longer to accommodate the extra face shields and eyeglass extender. For what it’s worth it will keep it safe and secure and dust-free if it is your main goal.

5. HIJIAO Hard Travel Case : Quest 2 Headset and Controller Accessories Bag

HIJIAO is one of the cheapest cases on our list and it seems to do the trick. It holds everything very well and is snug. To be honest, there isn’t much room for much more than a case. Therefore, if you prefer compactness, we would recommend only putting the case in it, without a battery. However, the case comes with straps to hold all parts in place.

It makes the Oculus seem much more portable, it’s sturdy and to be honest it is a great case for the price. The dual zip closure is on the main compartment. Each part of the system has a specific space carved out for it in the padding of the bag.

Compared to the box, it is much more compact and keeps everything safe while traveling back and forth. It also has a detachable shoulder strap and hand strap for ease of travel.

The real question is what should you look for in the travel case, so let us talk about that for a little bit.

Size – That depends on what kind of accessories you have, for example, you can get away with a small travel case and the regular head strap if you do not have any extra accessories.

However, if you have the elite head strap or other third-party attachments, we recommend opting for a backpack style.

Shell – When purchasing a travel case, you have two options: a hardshell or soft shell.

Keeping Oculus Quest in a soft case won’t protect it from anything other than dust, however, a soft case is easier to transport.

The most suitable Oculus Quest 2 case will have compartments for sure. Keep in mind, if not, the Oculus Quest 2 could hit controllers and accessories within the enclosure.

Is the carrying case for Quest 2 necessary?

The Oculus Quest 2 carrying case is an excellent and strong case that will protect your Quest 2. It is simple to clean with a wet wipe and is also simple to store and transport.

Meta working on travel mode for using Quest headsets during flights after Vision Pro launches with feature

Today I learned two things. First, apparently Meta Quest headsets don’t work on planes? I guess Apple knew to prioritize that feature for Vision Pro. And second, support is reportedly on the way. Add this to the list of ways competition from Vision Pro is making Meta Quest 3 a better product.

For April, Meta released software update v64 that makes Quest 3 passthrough more like Vision Pro, users say. Motion blur is more noticeable, but still clarity is increased. Meta has also added support for viewing spatial videos captured from iPhone 15 Pro.

Now Meta may be planning to introduce flight support as soon as v65 next month. Per @Lunayian on X ( via Nicholas Sutrich ), several code strings reference travel mode for use on a plane.

Apple pushes watching movies and TV shows during flights as a key use case for Apple Vision Pro. It’s one of the first things you see at the top of Apple’s website currently.

Surely Meta has taken notice and prioritized travel mode as it positions Meta Quest 3 as a dramatically cheaper solution to Vision Pro with many of the same capabilities.

The most impactful change, however, would be around multitasking. Quest headsets are limited to three app windows at a time right now. Apple Vision Pro has plenty of other limitations, but there’s virtually no limit to how many windows can be placed around a room and used together.

The Meta Quest 2 gets a permanent price cut to $199

Accessories like the battery strap are half their original price, too..

The Meta Quest 2 has been on sale for nearly a month, and today, Meta’s making that price permanent — $199 is the new sticker price for the virtual reality headset, the company announced today . That’s half what it originally cost in 2020, and Meta is permanently cutting the price of Quest 2 accessories like the Elite Strap with Battery (which I highly recommend) in half as well.

The Quest 2 is currently being supplanted by the $500 Quest 3 , of course, but it’s still an incredible entry point to VR, one that plays every Quest game except for a single Quest 3-exclusive title announced last month. It doesn’t have color passthrough vision or good mixed reality gaming, and I definitely prefer the Quest 3 for comfort and immersion, but I don’t know if I prefer it by $300.

The Quest 2 is also capable of streaming games from a PC ( including VR games ) or from the Xbox cloud . I played through all of Half-Life: Alyx that way.

I do have concerns about how long Meta will support the Quest 2 after seeing how much the company dissed the original Quest by retroactively shutting down fan-favorite games and pulling support . Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth told me we should expect first-party games to support Quest 2 for “quite a while” last June but didn’t answer my question about whether Meta might retroactively shut down games on Quest 2.

Still, there are millions more reasons to support Quest 2: it was the most popular headset the company’s ever produced and the lion’s share of the 20 million headsets Meta sold as of February 2023. It was in such high demand during the pandemic that Meta actually raised the price on a then-two-year-old gadget in 2022.

For now, the Quest 2 can even get some updates ahead of the Quest 3, like the lying down mode that arrived in March and took another month to hit Meta’s newer headset.

The Quest 2 still feels like a good deal today.

Capcom has announced on social media upcoming gameplay changes and fixes for its action-RPG, Dragon's Dogma 2, in future patches.
These gameplay changes include adjusting the Dragonsplague mechanic, Pawn AI behavior, and other miscellaneous features.
Dragonsplague is an infamous mechanic in Dragon's Dogma 2 that subtly turns the player's Pawn companions into ticking time bombs that can destroy them and everything around them, ruining their playthrough.

On April 19, 2024, Capcom made an important announcement on Twitter/X regarding Dragon's Dogma 2 . It plans to implement a selection of gameplay changes and bug fixes to the game, including adjustments to the infamous Dragonsplague mechanic that has caused widespread panic amongst Dragon's Dogma 2's player base.

For example, when infected, glowing eyes will be more noticeable.
Adding the option to zoom in on the faces of the Arisen and Pawns in the status screen, shops, etc.
Fixing some and implementing adjustments related to the mini-map.
Treasure chests that have already been acquired won't be displayed on the mini-map.
Fixing issues where occasionally the players couldn't high-five Pawns.
Fixing issues where Pawns wouldn't start guiding after offering to guide.
Making Pawns less likely to fall off cliffs.
Reducing the frequency of some Pawn dialogue lines.
Improving Pawn lines to better match circumstances.
Fixing some issues where Pawns stop speaking outside of combat.
Fixing some issues where the Main Pawn speaks Support Pawn's dialogue.
Making Pawns more likely to aid the Arisen if the Arisen commands them to help while being held by enemies.
Reducing the frequency of Pawns offering to be hired by the player while in the field.
Fixing issues where sometimes escort quests are considered failed when accessing Character Edit or other specific situations.
Fixing issues where the player could be jailed when fighting monsters in town.
Fixing some crashes and freezes in specific circumstances.
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

What is Dragonsplague, and why is it dangerous?

For those unaware, Dragonsplague is a dangerous status effect that infects the player's Pawn companions after fighting a dragon with them or while another player hires them. Unlike other status effects in Dragon's Dogma 2, Dragonsplague doesn't show up in the Status menu, and the only way to tell if a Pawn is infected if is they have glowing red eyes, suffer headaches while idle, or disobey them.

If the player doesn't dismiss or kill the infected Pawn before resting at an inn for around four or five in-game days, the Pawn will mutate into a giant monster and destroy everything around them, including towns, cities, and NPCS.

Dragonsplague has caused a major rift of opinions regarding Dragon's Dogma 2. Some welcome this addition as it adds extra challenge, while others have become so scared by it that they're afraid of even playing the game anymore. People got so panicked, that we at Windows Central even created a PSA on Dragonsplague to help them avoid this plague and save their playthroughs from being ruined.

Fortunately, Capcom is planning to make Dragonsplague infections less frequent and the symptoms more noticeable (like having the glowing red eyes more pronounced) with these upcoming adjustments. While this change won't get rid of Dragonsplague completely, it will hopefully help players prevent this condition more easily and save their Pawns.

Stay alert for the cataclysmic Dragonsplague

While I haven't personally encountered Dragonsplague during my playthrough, a couple of my friends are so scared of their Pawns catching it that they refuse to play again, which is a mighty shame. Hopefully, with these gameplay changes, my friends and many other players will be enticed to return to Dragon's Dogma 2 and not miss out on one of the best Xbox games and best PC games of 2024.

Can’t afford a $3,499 Apple Vision Pro? Meta Quest 2 is an even better alternative now

Apple’s exciting new Vision Pro headset is now available in several regions, and most people agree that it looks amazing. Unfortunately, most people also agree that the $3,499 price tag is way too insane to even consider. Then there’s the Meta Quest 3, which isn’t nearly as impressive as Apple’s spatial computer. It’s also still pretty pricey at $499 . If you want a VR headset that’s actually affordable, you should definitely check out the Meta Quest 2 instead — especially now that Meta has permanently lowered the price.

Meta’s Quest 2 is nowhere near as advanced as Apple’s Vision Pro headset. That should go without saying, of course. Comparing a $3,499 mixed reality headset to a $199 VR headset is like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Honda Civic. Yes, they both have four wheels and two pedals, but the similarities end there.

Apple showed off so many cool Vision Pro features during WWDC , and we’ve seen so much more since the headset was released. I haven’t tried one yet myself, but you can read BGR’s Vision Pro review to learn all about it. The mixed reality features look fantastic, and the theater mode with different environments could be so cool. The idea of watching a movie on a 100-inch screen in the middle of a realistic-looking forest is awesome.

I think the Meta Quest 2 is more my speed, and you can currently get one at the newly reduced price from Amazon or Walmart .

I have a ton of fun when I use the Meta Quest 2. It might not show people a digital rendering of my eyes when they walk by, but it does have a ton of fun games and other experiences. There’s also the little difference that it only costs $199 instead of $3,499.

But Meta’s Quest 2 is great for light VR gaming and other fun VR experiences. At $199 in brand-new condition , it’s a fantastic value.
