Everything You Need To Know When Traveling To Lesbos Island

travel to lesvos greece

Recently I visited one of the most popular Northern Aegean Islands: Lesbos, Greece. Soaking up the last rays of summer sun when the rest of Europe was getting cold. This peaceful island was putting a summer smile on my face at the end of Autumn. Lesbos is a great place to go off the beaten path in Europe . In this blog you can read how I explored the island by car and checked out all the Lesbos tourist spots with some amazing things to do and places to visit. Enjoy all my tips for traveling to Lesbos below.

Traveling from overseas to Europe? Click on the following link to find the best sim card for traveling in Europe in 2023  as I compared all the options out there for you. Don't waste money on expensive roaming costs or slow overseas data roaming! Just visiting Greece? Don't get stuck with high roaming costs. I recommend you buying a sim card in Greece in 2023 .

Lesvos or Lesbos

Let get this misunderstanding out of our way straight away. The official name is Lesvos as in Greek spelling the name of the island is Λέσβος and the letter ‘β’ is pronounced as a ‘v’. That is why local authorities name the island Lesvos. But as in English the ‘v’ is pronounced as a ‘b’, almost everyone writes Lesbos and that is also why I chose to name it Lesbos in this article. The island is often confused with ‘Lesbian’, the international term for homosexual women, but that has actually to do with a lady called Sappho who was born on the island a couple hundred years before Christ. She wrote poems with in which she expresses a strong desire for other women. Got it? :)

Now that we have all the facts right, let's travel to Lesbos and look at the things to do on the island.

Where is Lesbos Island

If you would look at the map and look for Lesbos Greece, you would almost think this island is be part of Turkey, but nope it is still part of Greece.

where is lesbos

In fact if you walk out of the Lesbos Island airport and look across the water you will see Turkey mainland. The difference between Europe and Asia is only 7 kilometers here. Therefore I also named Lesbos Island in a list of hidden gems travel destinations in Europe in 2023 .

This was the view over Turkey on the other side when I walked out of the airport.

How to get to Lesbos

There are regular daily flights to Lesbos arriving on Mytilini International Airport. Domestic flights mostly arrive from either Athens or Thessaloniki, international flight come directly from Northern Europe as the biggest markets for Lesbos tourism is Scandinavia, Holland, Germany and the UK.

Ferries to and from Lesbos Island

There are of course also ferries that connect the island. Hopping on a ferry is in most cases significantly cheaper than a flight to Lesbos, but journeys are pretty long. Before the pandemic there were daily ferries (12h) from Piraeus to Mytillene. There is normally also a ferry from Lesbos to Thessaloniki that goes through Limnos Island.

Because of the global pandemic a lot of ferries are not operating, therefore I recommend you to check the below public transport search engine that includes all operating ferries in Greece.

There is also a boat connection with Turkey for people who are on an onward journey. If you are traveling from Europe to Turkey the Greek Island Lesbos can be your last stop in Europe.

How to get around in Lesbos Greece

There are public busses and I spoke to some backpackers traveling in Lesbos, but they weren't convincing. Traveling by public transport in Lesvos is not ideal at all! Bus schedules cant be really trusted and journey are long. One of the best things to do in Lesbos is to rent a car for your own convenience. Cars can be rented straight at the airport and you can already find car rentals for 1 week for €150. You just gotta search a little. Here are two local websites for car rentals:

  • Rent a Car Lesvos
  • Lesvos Car Hire

Planning your Lesbos holidays

The island is not the typical popular Greek island where mass tourism killed the vibe. Lesbos Island is still a place where you can find the authentic Greek laid-back lifestyle. The island is a hotspot for those tourist that are looking to have a drink on the side of the ocean overlooking idyllic bays and pretty calm beaches. Looking for that Mediterranean lifestyle? You will find it on a trip to Lesbos. Even after the main tourist season that is of course during the European summer, Lebos is still a great place to visit in Greece in October .

Things to do in Lesbos

If you rent a car it is not a question of what to do in Lesbos, but more about what can you do in the number of days you have. There are so many things to do in Lesbos that I would recommend you to stay on the island for about 6 days and stay overnight at at least 2 different places. But more about that later.

Enjoy the tranquillity in Lesvos.

1. Visit Molyvos

This is the most iconic town of Lesbos Island and such picture perfect place. Of all the things to do in Lesbos you cannot miss this one.

lesbos island 1

Molyvos is the pearl of the Greek island Lesbos with its town perched into the cliffs with the majestic castle on top like a guard keeping an eye on the town and its surroundings. Lesbos tourism can be proud to have such a jewel.

The tiny little streets leading uphill to the castle are adorned with numerous cute coffee places, souvenirs shops, bakeries and ice cream stalls. This is such a lovely place and a must do during your Lesbos holidays.

2. Hike, climb, bike or go horse riding in Molyvos

If you are looking what to do in Lesbos in terms of activities then this Northern region is perfect for you as well. There are many great hiking routes available, mountain biking tours can be found even as rock climbing. I passed these activities but went horse riding instead.

Since this island has such a laid-back feel I chose the horse riding activity, it fits the Lesbos island vibe completely. Click here for more info about horse riding in Molyvos .

3. Scuba diving in Lesbos

Go scuba diving in Lesbos. There are amazing shipwrecks and the visibility is exceptional. Have a look here for more info about  scuba diving in Lesbos .

4. Glass bottom boat tour

Lesbos holidays aren’t complete without a boat tour of course. In the morning the sea was completely flat and we decided to book the glass bottom boat Calypso . They also organize barbecue tours to the nearby Rabbit Island.

The pituresque town of Petra seen from the ocean.

5. Visit the idyllic town of Petra

Petra is a little beach town with narrow streets and a kind of boulevard. Its beach is a popular hangout with sun beds and umbrellas in the peak season but the reason I went was the Panagia Glykofiloussa or in English the Church of Virgin Maria on top of the rock looming large over the little village.

lesvos or lesbos 1

There are 114 stairs that lead up to the church with an impressive interior and an even impressive view.

6. Have lunch in Skala Sikamnia

This is probably the cutest town on Lesbos island. It feels like there are a couple houses built around a little fishing marina and a church.

where to stay in lesbos 3

The ocean around this part of the island is crystal clear but I fell in love with the little colorful restaurants surrounding the marina.

what to do in lesbos 3

A perfect place to have lunch on the water or jump in.

7. Pottery Art workshop in Mantamados

An hour drive southeast from Molyvos there is the sleepy little village of Mantamados that is famous for its pottery art. There are many workshops you can sign up for and it is great fun to try and make pottery and I can tell you it is not as easy as it may seem!

lesvos 3

8. Monastery of Taxiarches

Just outside of Mantamados there is a beautiful monastery with an incredible church. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take pictures inside, but this is a photo from the peaceful courtyard.

9. Museum of industrial Olive Production

This museum will show you how they produced olive oil about a 100 year ago. The machinery and the production hall are still intact and the coolest thing is the whole process still works.

lesbos greece 1

The entrance is a couple dollars and well worth checking out. On your way to The Museum Of Industrial Olive Production you will see the Olive plantations and be careful for wild sheep as they may suddenly cross the road! And the best things about visiting this museum is some samples of their products!

where is lesbos 4

10. Birdwatching in the Wetlands

The flamingo is not something you would travel to Lesbos for in the first place I guess but damn I had never seen flamingos in Europe (didn’t even know they existed on our continent). There are bunch of bird watching places around and some watch towers to climb into. I wish I had a zoom lens! :)

greek island lesbos 4

11. 4x4 Safari Lepetymnos Mountain

Get to the highest point in Lesbos at 994 meters above sea level in a 4x4 jeep and see wild horses on your way. You are able to feed them even. From the top of the Lepetymnos Mountain you have breathtaking views over Lesbos all the way to Asia. One of the coolest things to do in Lesbos when you ask me. Click here for more info about the 4x4 safari in Lesvos .

12. Petrified Forest

The Natural History of The Lesbos Island Petrified History Museum is the main tourist drag on this side of the island. This geological museum shows you fossils dating more than 20 million years ago, which apparently give away a lot of information about the existence of the earth. Definitely interesting for those who are into these kind of geological facts and studies.

The town of Sigri is not the most popular place on a greek island. Lesbos has more beautiful towns but people come here for to escape the tourists. Sigri tends to be more quiete and beaches are not busy at all. Also Sigri is due to strong winds always a little cooler and therefore in the hot summer months more pleasant. It has a small Turkish castle and some restaurants, but that is about it.

where to stay in lesbos 2

14. Mytilini

Of course don’t skip the vibrant capital of Lesbos Island. Mytilini is where everything happens in terms of nightlife and where young people gather. There is a University and a lot of lovely coffee shops, a shopping street, artistic cafes and hip bars. Terraces are full of people and at nighttime the city comes alive in the area around Sappho Square.

travel to lesbos 6

15. Archeological Museum Mytilini

Roam around the harbour in the morning and look at all the fishing boats coming in and out. Visit the fish market and watch the big ferries arriving then head up to the archaeological museum where you can find remnants of houses dating back from before Christ and pottery and statues from ages ago. It was pretty interesting, entrance fee is €4.

where is lesbos 6

16. Castle of Mytilini

To get the best views over Mytilene head up to the castle on top of the hill. The entrance fee is €3, but the views from the fortified walls are worth it. Even in summer it is pretty quiet up here. Check out the Mytilene Caste's Wikipedia Page for more info and history.

lesvos 5

17. Therma hot springs

For just a couple dollar you can dip into the hot springs overlooking the Bay of Geras. Therma Spa is a perfect place for a relaxing afternoon plus they have delicious sandwiches and good coffee. This place is totally worth it and among my favorite things to do in Lesvos.

greek island lesbos 5

18. Agiasos

About 40 minutes drive up hill from Mytilini you can find the sleepy but beautiful mountain village of Agiasos. The narrow and steep cobblestoned streets are amazing to wander through and surely you will find local hidden gems like small restaurants with authentic food, cute souvenir shops, etc.

lesvos or lesbos 5

The little square houses a bunch of colorful restaurants and some places to have a drink around a church. I really loved this cute little town with its steep streets and colorful houses. Such a photogenic pituresque village perfect for Instagram shots with old colorful houses and small wooden doors.

lesvos or lesbos 4

19. Plomari

Last but not least make sure to visit the town of Plomari or even stay here overnight. This cute town is the birthplace of the well-known Greek signature drink: Ouzo. There are 2 Ouzo Museums that can be visited: Barbayanni Ouzo  and World of Ouzo .

where is lesbos 11

The vibe in Plomari was cool, I liked hanging out there plus it had some beautiful deserted beaches close to the city. Sadly my Lesbos itinerary did not make me stay there overnight, but next time I visit Lesvos, I definitely will do so.

where is lesbos 12

Best beaches in Lesbos Greece

With more than 350 kilometers coastline there is plenty of choice is you want to find a beach that suits your mood. Deserted beaches, rocky, pebbled beaches, cliffs, hidden bays and popular beach spots with beach huts and sun beds. My favorite beaches in Lesvos are:

  • Stefanos Beach in Agios
  • Eftalou Beach in Molyvos
  • Skala Kallonis Beach in Kalloni

lesvos or lesbos 3

Where to stay in Lesbos

The best thing to do is to stay in at least two different places on the island. Lesbos has two main tourist drags that cannot be missed, so I recommend to stay around Molyvos and Mytilini for sure. A third place to stay would be around the Sigri in the West to see the Museum of the Petrified Forest and discover some deserted beaches and bays.

Delfinia Hotel - amazing pool view and private beach .

Pyrgos Mytilini - Colonial estate with only a few rooms, amazing rooftop .

When in Lesbos, you can explore several towns and villages or enjoy the interesting variety of activities you can experience in Mytilene, the capital of the island. It is also one of Greece’s more budget-friendly island destinations!

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Lesvos Vs. Lesbos

You will see this island is spelled both Lesbos Island and Lesvos Island . And we will write it both ways through this post. So why has this remarkable destination acquired two names? It is to the Island’s name and is spelled with the Greek letter B, aka Beta.

In Greek, Beta is pronounced as we English speakers say, V. So it sounds like ‘Les-Vos.’ Ancient Greeks may have pronounced Beta like an English B, but modern Greeks tend to pronounce it as a V. Most English speakers pronounce it Lesbos – but both are correct.

Where Is Lesbos Island

The island of Lesbos is located on the North Eastern Aegean Sea , quite close to the coast of Turkey. There are several towns to spend time on the island, including the capital, Mytilene, Molyvos, Agiassos, Plomari, and Skala Erasou.

How To Get To Lesvos Island

Eressos, Lesvos, Greece at sunset

The most popular way to reach Lesbos is to travel by ferry from Athens .

There are several weekly departures from the port of Piraeus . You can also travel by ferry departing from the port of Kavala. This port, located on the northern part of the Greek mainland, is also the place of departure for the ferries going to Syros , Chios , and Ikaria .

The island also has an international airport  in Mytilene, receiving flights from Athens and Thessaloniki all year round.

Mytilene is also connected with other Aegean islands during the summer, with flights arriving from Crete , Samos, Rhodes , and a few European countries.

When To Visit Lesvos Island

Things to do in Lesbos - Rocky alleyway with green plants in the historic village of Molyvos

Boasting the typical Mediterranean weather you will find in most of the Greek islands , Lesbos has plenty of sunny days and warm temperatures throughout the year.

The hottest months of the year are July and August, while temperatures get more pleasant at the end of the season (September). Spring is also an excellent time to visit if you want to enjoy a cooler climate with fewer crowds on the beach.

Best Things To Do In Lesbos

Home to myth, culture, and incredible landscapes, this hospitable island is a favorite destination in Greece.   This stunning volcanic island is also home to unexpected hot springs and the largest petrified forest in the world.

Offering dozens of unique experiences, this is our selection of the best things to see and do in Lesbos.

Castle Of Molyvos

Lesbos Island Greece

One of the most interesting sites on the island is in the town of Molyvos, in the northern area of the island. Here, you will find a unique Byzantine castle (one of several strong castles on the island) towering over the city and offering spectacular panoramic views.

Dating back to the eleventh century, the Castle of Molyvos was actually built over a former and much older fortress that probably dated back to the Archaic era. Its primary function was to contrast attacks coming from the Turkish city of Smyrna not many years before the final invasion and conquest of the island by the Ottoman Empire.

After defending the region from several attacks, the fortress finally fell in 1458, giving way to a long siege over the city.

To access the castle, it is necessary to pass through three different protection gates, the last made from metal-plated wood.

From the top of the castle, it is possible to understand how close the Turkish coast is to the island.

Castle Of Mytelene

Things to do in Lesbos - Castle of Mytelene

Another unmissable fortress on the island, the Castle of Mytilene, is one of the largest strongholds in the Mediterranean . The fort stands on the ruins of an ancient Greek acropolis.

The castle was first built back in the sixth century under the orders of Emperor Justinian. However, in the fourteenth century, the Genoans ruled the island, and the castle became the home and seat of the governor.

Since Lesbos, like many other Greek islands, underwent various invasions at the hand of several cultures in the Mediterranean, the castle is a living example of those conquests and rules. It features a Byzantine cistern, a tekke or Islamic monastery, and an Ottoman Hammam.

Temple Of Aphrodite – Mesa Archaeological Site

Considered among the oldest archaeological sites in Lesbos, this site is located between Molyvos and Mytilene.

Although just a few ruins are available, consider a guided visit with a local archaeologist to learn everything about the goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite, and this place devoted to meditating and worshiping the deity.

The site has become a pilgrimage place on the island, often visited by people interested in yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices.

Check out other Greek temples worth a visit in the country!

Petrified forest of lesbos.

Petrified Forest Of Lesbos

Hundreds of fossilized tree trunks were once part of a lush forest that is about 20 million years old near the island’s western coast.

Although there are a few petrified trees scattered in different spots under the water off the coast of Lesbos, the majority of the forest is located inside a National Forest Park standing near the village of Sigri.

Archaeologists and other researchers believe that the phenomenon of petrifaction occurred due to the lava and ashes coming from eruptions in the Neogene Period. This forest, larger than the famous petrified forest in Arizona, is the only one of this kind in Europe.

Natural History Museum Of The Lesbos Petrified Forest

Pair the visit to the Petrified Forest of Lesbos with a tour of the natural history museum, also near the forest in the village of Sigri. On the premises, you can see the remarkable exhibition of the petrified forest and over forty diverse species of trees in the forest.

In a different hall, it is possible to learn about the interesting volcanic history of the Aegean. The exhibition includes rocks, minerals, and also anthropological exhibits from the Neolithic, including tools and remains of extinct primates that once lived in the Aegean.

New Archaeological Museum

Located in Mytilene, this is the perfect place to visit to learn everything about the island’s past. It features a permanent exhibition that depicts life on Lesbos from the Hellenistic Period to the end of the Roman period.

During the visit, you can check out an impressive collection of figurines, vases, ceramics, but also funerary objects, and an incredible marble funerary relief.

Kalloni Salt Pans

Perfect spot for birdwatchers, especially in the fall and spring, the impressive bay south of Kalloni features a unique salt pan that gives refuge to various wildlife, including flamingos and even sheep.

However, the place is a haven for migratory birds, including storks, redshanks, sandpipers, stilts, and many more.

Discover our favorite compact binoculars for travel here.

Roman aqueduct.

Known as the Roman Aqueduct of Moria, the ruins of this once impressive engineering marvel are located in the heart of a valley outside the town of Mytilene.

The construction dates back to the third century AD, and the largest remaining part of the structure is about 160 meters long, with two and up to three levels of arches made of local grey marble.

The aqueduct was used to channel water from the springs on the Mountain Olympos to the ancient city of Mytilene, covering a distance of 26 kilometers.

Plomari Ouzo Distillery

If there is one thing that Lesbos is known for, it’s Ouzo. In fact, on the island, you can find the most famous ouzo brand in the world in Plomari. The factory was founded in 1894 by Isidoros Arvanitis, a native of the village of Plomari.

This distillery has been producing Greece’s most beloved spirit ever since, following a secret formula that has pretty much remained the same throughout the years.

The factory is open to the public. Visitors and tours are available for those interested in learning the production process and those who want to know about ouzo and taste different varieties of this popular drink!

Ouzo Museum Barbayannis

Greece Travel Blog_Complete Guide To Lesbos_Ouzo Barbayannis

As we have already mentioned, the island’s staple product is the popular spirit you will easily spot in every Greek tavern, Ouzo.

You can learn more about this solid anise-flavored spirit by visiting the Barbayannis Distillery and the village of Plomari. The company dates back to 1860, and it was founded by a Russian immigrant who took advantage of the area’s water and herbs to develop his recipe.

Next to the modern premises of the distillery, it is possible to visit the Ouzo Museum to learn about ouzo production and the history of the family.

During the visit, you can also explore the distillery, sample different types of ouzo, and purchase your ouzo souvenir at the factory’s shop.

Top 5 beaches in lesbos.

If we consider the size of the island, one of the biggest in this area of the Aegean, it’s not hard to guess that there are not just a few but many beaches worth seeing on the island.

Some of them are organized, while others are secluded, intimate, and solitary. In any case, these are the beaches I suggest checking out when visiting Lesbos.

Therefore, we recommend you rent a car and explore the coastline to find the right shore for you and your travel party according to your needs.

Agios Isidoros

About 40 kilometers from Mytilene, this beach is next to the Agios Isidoros village, another quiet place for a holiday on the island . Agios Isidoros is a pebbled beach with crystal waters.

The long and wide shore is ideal for enjoying swimming and snorkeling due to the rich marine life in the area and the bizarre rock formations under the sea.

Mytilene Beach

This is a very popular shore that is easy to reach from anywhere on the island. The beach is near the port and offers easy access to the sea for those who prefer to stay in the capital instead of moving around the island.

The beach features shallow crystal clear water and both small pebbles and sand. You can reach this beach on foot from the center of Mytilene. The place has umbrellas and sun beds for rent, and many accommodation options are nearby.

Where To Eat In Lesbos

Food in Greece - greek gyros with tzatziki sauce and fries on parchment

No matter where in Lesbos you go, you will always find a cozy café or a traditional tavern where you can enjoy good comfort food drizzled in olive oil. Not to mention, it’s also an island known for its nightlife scene , always up to date with the coolest thing happening in music.

These are the spots we suggest checking out for a bite to eat or a drink while in Lesbos.

Located in Mytilene, Istoriko is a popular restaurant in the capital of Lesbos. Specializing in the Mediterranean diet, head here to enjoy lunch and dinner but also for brunch or late-night drinks.

Meltemi is a restaurant and pizza house in Molyvos, a few meters from the harbor. Here, you can have typical Greek dishes and freshly baked pizzas.

Ultimate Travel Guide to the Island of Lesbos in 2021

Your Guide To Greece

July 4, 2020

lesbos

Perched in the eastern Aegean Sea just off the west coast of Turkey, Lesbos is Greece’s third-largest island. Its 630 square miles contain stunning and diverse ecosystems, from the flat, dry plains in the west to the dense, mountainous forests in the east and the tranquil sandy beaches on the coasts.

It’s a popular holiday destination for European travelers as well as tourists from around the world, who cherish the island for its charming villages, beautiful beaches and historic landmarks.

Best Time to Visit Lesbos

With its typical Mediterranean climate, Lesbos offers more days of sunshine than almost any other island in the Aegean Sea, making it a wonderful place to visit year-round. Each season offers its own charms, so here’s what to expect as you plan your trip:

  • Summer: Like most of the Greek islands, Lesbos sees its biggest crowds during the summer high season from June to mid-September. The warmest and driest months for swimming and sunbathing are July and August; you can also expect to pay the highest prices for accommodations and travel during the summer.
  • Fall: From mid-September until mid-November, the weather on Lesbos is still quite pleasant, and the summer crowds have thinned out considerably. You may experience a few rainy days, but overall temperatures will be mild.
  • Winter: From December to mid-March, crowds on Lesbos are almost nonexistent and hotel prices will be at their lowest point of the year. However, the weather will be somewhat chilly, with daytime high temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid visiting in January, when rainfall hits its peak.
  • Spring: Starting in mid-March and extending through May, spring is a beautiful time to visit Lesbos, with the sea air starting to warm and flowers blooming across the island. It probably won’t be warm enough to swim, but it’s an ideal time for a visit to the island’s famed hot springs.

Getting to Lesbos

Multiple ferries run between Athens’ Piraeus port and Lesbos each week, with frequency somewhat influenced by the season of your visit. You can also catch a ferry from the port of Kavala in northern Greece as well as from several other islands, including Mykonos , Chios and Ikaria. In the summer, a ferry runs daily between Lesbos and the port of Ayvalik in Turkey; in the off-season, it may be available only one or two days per week.

Flights from Athens and Thessaloniki arrive year-round at Mytilene International Airport, located near the capital city center. During the busy summer season, flights from Heraklion, Chios, Samos and Rhodes may also be available.

Staying in Lesbos

On an island this size, it’s not surprising that Lesbos has such a wide variety of accommodations, from sprawling luxury resorts to small, quaint inns. Consider booking a stay at one of these top picks:

  • Elysion : This newly-built beachfront property in Mytilene is conveniently located just minutes from the airport. Each of its deluxe rooms and suites features contemporary décor, a private balcony, free Wi-Fi, individual air conditioning controls, flat-screen TV with satellite service and a minibar. A sparkling pool and onsite restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner round out the amenities.
  • Aegean Sun : Located a stone’s throw from the pebbled shores of Agios Isidoros beach, the Aegean Sun offers clean, comfortable rooms and friendly service in a modern setting. In-room perks include air conditioning, private balconies, refrigerator and satellite TV.
  • Aphrodite Hotel at Vatera : This Vatera beach property is located about 30 miles north of Mytilene and features spacious rooms, studios and apartments for groups of all sizes. The hotel is a short walk to the blue flag beach of Vatera and offers a daily breakfast buffet, bicycle rentals and free use of umbrellas and beach chairs.
  • Bella Vista : If you prefer to stay on the north end of the island, the 3-star Bella Vista hotel is an excellent option located in Eftalou beach near the charming town of Molivos. Each of its 37 rooms features a balcony with sea view, en suite bathroom with tub and shower and individual climate control.
  • Imerti Resort and Boutique Hotel : This family-owned and operated hotel in central Lesbos is tucked away in the quiet forests of Skala Kallonis, providing a peaceful retreat from the bustling activity of Mytilene. The hotel prides itself on its eco-friendly construction and practices and is the only certified “green” hotel on the island.

How Long to Stay in Lesbos

Despite its size, Lesbos doesn’t offer the same level of organized tours, activities and nightlife as other Aegean islands like Santorini and Mykonos. If you don’t mind a relaxed, unstructured vacation spent mainly sunbathing and exploring the outdoors, you could easily spend five to seven days here, but its proximity to Turkey and other popular Greek islands make it a good candidate for inclusion in an island-hopping vacation. If this is the route you take, two or three days on Lesbos should suffice.

Things to Do in Lesbos

Unlike some of its more developed neighbors, Lesbos has managed to preserve a largely traditional feel, with quaint fishing villages, rustic beaches and ancient castles among the key attractions on this sprawling island. Depending on the length of your stay, you’ll want to include some or all of the following on your itinerary:

Castle of Molyvos

Built in the mid-13 th century on top of a tree-lined hill, the Castle of Molyvos is a multilevel structure featuring imposing walls, coats of arms and other decorative elements. The castle was renovated several times over the centuries and still bears the influences of Turkish and Italian invaders in its design. The castle is open to the public daily and hosts concerts, lectures and other cultural events during the summer months.

Medieval Castle of Mytilene

This highly-fortified castle is believed to have been constructed by the Byzantines in the 5 th century to defend the city from the pirates that roamed the Mediterranean. Like the Castle of Molyvos, this castle was renovated by Ottoman and Genovese conquerors.

Petrified Forest

Located on the western side of the island, the Petrified Forest of Lesbos was formed 20 million years ago when a massive volcanic eruption blanketed the region in lava and ash. At more than 100 square miles, it is believed to be the largest petrified forest in the world, with fossilized trunks and roots up to 50 feet long and 10 feet in diameter dotting the sandy landscape.

World of Ouzo Museum

Tour the World of Ouzo Museum in Isidoros Arvanitis, where one of the most famous brands of Greece’s national beverage is produced. Visitors will witness the distillery process from raw ingredients to bottling and see a collection of ouzo artifacts and antique distillery equipment.

Lesbos Archaeological Museum

Located in the capital city of Mytilene, this two-building complex houses artifacts from excavations throughout the island, including fragments of ancient temples, statues, coins, jewelry and more.

Ipsilou Monastery

This picturesque structure is perched atop the highest peak in the Ordimnos Mountain Range, overlooking the village of Andissa. Founded in 800 A.D., the main structure was erected three centuries later and survived repeated raids by the Ottomans.

Inside the monastery, visitors can examine several large Byzantine icons as well as jewel-studded crosses, historic manuscripts and other interesting relics.

Caves of Lesbos

Roughly 200 caves are scattered around the island of Lesbos, many of which have never been explored. Ancient pottery and other artifacts have been discovered in the largest cave, Magaras, which is near Mytilene and is thought to have been used as a primitive worship site.

The cave of Agios Ioannis in Thermi features two marble-lined corridors, and several ancient tombs have been discovered inside. Other notable caves include the cave of Agios Vartholomeos in Taxiarches and the Cave of Glastra in Agiassos.

Lesbos Beaches

The beaches of Lesbos are the island’s crown jewels, with some offering bustling crowds and organized activities and others providing secluded retreats.

  • Agios Isidoros Beach: This pebbled beach about 25 miles southeast of Mytilene is famous for its clear blue waters and pristine setting. It’s a popular destination for snorkeling and diving, thanks to unusual underwater rock formations and thriving sea life.
  • Mytilene Beach: This structured beach near the port features shallow waters and plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas, making it a perfect location for swimming and sunbathing. It’s convenient to many hotels and restaurants and a good choice for families.
  • Petra Beach: About 35 miles northwest of Mytilene, Petra Beach is a well-known tourist resort with amenities like umbrellas, beach chairs, showers and changing rooms, as well as a few nearby taverns and cafes.
  • Molyvos Beach: This beach on the north end of the island has been awarded the European Union’s Blue Flag designation for its pristine waters, making it an ideal location for snorkeling and diving as well as other water sports.
  • Vatera Beach: This vast, picturesque beach is about 30 miles southwest of Mytilene and features fine, golden sand and crystal-clear waters that have earned it the Blue Flag every year for decades.
  • Eftalou Beach: About 40 miles northwest of Mytilene, Eftalou is known for the natural springs that line the pebbled beachfront; dozens of hotels, restaurants and other amenities are located nearby.

Getting Around Lesbos

Given the size of the island, you’ll want to give serious thought to your transportation options as you plan your trip.

  • Renting a car will give you the most flexibility and freedom to explore Lesbos, and many travelers consider it well worth the cost.
  • Taxis and private transfers are available through most of the hotels on the island, although the costs can add up quickly. If you plan to spend most of your trip in Mytilene or one of the other larger cities, this might be a reasonable option.
  • Lesbos has a relatively robust public transportation system , which is an inexpensive way to get around, but it may mean spending much of your vacation sitting on a bus or waiting for one to arrive.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a rustic, relaxed destination among the Greek islands, it’s hard to go wrong with a visit to Lesbos. Its sandy beaches, lush olive groves and rolling hills will appeal to nature lovers, while history buffs will enjoy exploring its historic castles and ancient caves.

Whether you’re building an island-hopping itinerary or are looking for a singular holiday retreat, don’t miss out on this somewhat underrated Aegean gem.

The Petrified Forests of Lesvos

The petrified forest has been declared a  Protected Natural Monument , included also in the  European Geopark Network . Fossilized plants have been found in many localities on the western part of the island. The fossilized forest was formed during the Late Oligocene to Lower–Middle Miocene, by the intense volcanic activity in the area. Neogene volcanic rocks dominate the central and western part of the island, comprising andesites, dacites and rhyolites, ignimbrite, pyroclastic, tuffs, and volcanic ash. The products of the volcanic activity covered the vegetation of the area and the fossilization process took place during favorable conditions. The fossilized plants are silicified remnants of a sub-tropical forest that existed on the north-west part of the island 20-15 million years ago.

Hopefully, the increased attention to their declining states will aid in their preservation.

Visiting Lesvos: Everything You Need to Know

posted by Nikos Tsakiris on June 13, 2023 // last updated on June 15, 2023

Nestled in the eastern Aegean Sea just off the west coast of Turkey, Lesvos is Greece’s third-largest island and an enchanting destination for travellers in search of a serene and picturesque holiday.

Known for its traditional villages, ancient monuments, and captivating natural locations, Lesvos offers a myriad of experiences waiting to be explored. With its warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage, the island ensures an unforgettable adventure for those who seek to discover its charm.

A treasure trove of unique landscapes, Lesvos is home to a world-famous petrified forest, pristine beaches, and magnificent olive groves. The island’s diverse topography comprises of rugged desert-like western plains, sandy beaches, and salt marshes in the centre, and thickly forested mountains and olive groves to the east. This wide range of natural settings provides the perfect backdrop for a variety of activities and sightseeing opportunities.

Lesvos or Lesbos lies among the north-eastern Aegean islands and close to the Turkish mainland.

Also called by its capital town of Mytilini, It’s relatively isolated with the nearest islands of note being Chios to the south and Limnos to the north, both some distance away.

Big and beautiful, Lesvos is the third largest of the Greek islands and although it has stretched its arms wide to embrace the tourist market it still exudes a traditional small Greek island atmosphere.

The island has its own airport that can take regular holiday charter flights so Lesvos doesn’t have to rely on ferries to bring in the business.

And where holiday tourism is evident on Lesvos, it does not dominate. The production of exceptional olive oil and trademark ouzo are still two of the island’s most important industries.

Lesvos islanders have a proud identity marked by long cultural traditions and this has tempered the demands of holiday companies.

The beaches may not be as many, nor the landscape as lovely as some other Greek islands but this is still a quietly impressive destination for discerning holidaymakers.

The main attractions are the traditional Greek way of life, the varied landscape, the quaint hill villages and a sprinkling of splendid beaches.

As the birthplace of the renowned Greek poet Sappho and the original home of Ouzo, Lesvos also boasts a rich cultural scene.

Visitors can delve into the island’s history by exploring its noble mansions, castles, and ancient monuments.

With so much to offer, Lesvos is truly an ideal destination for families, couples, and adventurers alike.

Getting to Lesvos

Lesvos, also known as Mytilene, is a beautiful island located in the eastern Aegean Sea near the west coast of Turkey. It’s the third-largest island in Greece and an ideal destination for travellers seeking a serene scenery, traditional villages, ancient monuments, and unique natural locations.

There are two main ways to reach Lesvos: by air and by ferry.

The most convenient and quickest way to reach Lesvos is by air. The island’s main airport is Mytilene International Airport (MJT). It serves numerous domestic flights from major cities in Greece, such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and Rhodes.

During the peak tourist season, which runs from April to October, there are also various direct flights to Lesvos from several European cities.

Airlines operating flights to Mytilene include Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, and Sky Express.

Here’s a brief list of flight durations from major cities in Greece:

  • From Athens: Approximately 1 hour
  • From Thessaloniki: Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • From Rhodes: Approximately 1 hour

Alternatively, you can reach Lesvos by ferry.

The island is well-connected to the Greek mainland and other nearby islands through the ports of Mytilene and Plomari. There are daily ferry services from Piraeus (Athens) to Mytilene operated by companies like Hellenic Seaways and Blue Star Ferries.

The journey from Piraeus to Mytilene takes roughly 10-12 hours, and ferries usually run overnight.

A shorter route is available from the Turkish coastal city of Ayvalık to Mytilene, taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This service is typically available from April to October and is operated by the Turkish company Turyol.

Keep in mind that ferry schedules may change seasonally, and it’s best to book your tickets in advance during the peak season.

In summary, both air and ferry services are available for travellers planning their visit to Lesvos.

While flying is undoubtedly the fastest option, taking a ferry offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Aegean Sea and explore other nearby islands en route.

lesvos g5d524fb23 1280

The Greek island of Lesvos is also known as Lesbos Island and many times called Mytilene among the locals, who use the name of its capital to refer to the whole island. It is located in the North-East Aegean and is the third largest island in Greece.

While it hasn't gained the fame other Greek islands have, it is an authentic Greek holiday destination one should choose in the summer to avoid the large tourist crowds.

However, full of rich history, fresh local produce , and stunning coastal walks, the island of Lesvos has a lot to offer visitors all year round.

Lesvos island was the birthplace of poets Sappho and Alcaeus, artist Theophilus and famous Greek author Stratis Myrivilis. The beautiful island of Lesvos, however, is mainly known as the home of the popular ancient Greek poet Sappho, from whose association with homosexuality the word lesbian derives its modern meaning.

Olive groves cover most of the area and are separated by two deep, close bays. Lesvos is also a rich cultural town with vibrant traditional villages with miles of beaches, ouzo distilleries, and exquisite food.

Here is a highlights guide to the magical island of Lesvos to navigate your way through it like a local!

The best towns and villages on Lesvos island

molivos g80b4f0d87 1280

The most beautiful village of Lesvos is located in the northern part of the island, at a distance of 60 km from the capital, Mytilini.

Molyvos impresses the visitor by maintaining its imposing Genoese castle, which "crowns" the settlement and is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the eastern Mediterranean.

The village, with its traditional stone-built cobblestone streets, beautiful stone mansions with wooden balconies, as well as the dreamy view of the sunset, is a favorite destination on the island for those who want to discover places that really remain engraved in their memory forever.

A walk through the flowery alleys offers incredible picturesque images, while the fragrances that emerge from the village's ouzos are among its main features that delight the visitor.

What is worth mentioning about Molyvos is the fact that to preserve the architectural specificity of the settlement and its traditional color and aroma – since 1965, it has been declared a protected settlement – building is not allowed unless the materials used are stone and wood.

Antissa is the second most important village in the region and the birthplace of the ancient poet and musician Terpandros.

Its square with the centuries-old plane trees, which create a beautiful landscape with the shade they give to the coffee tables, will attract your attention.

Its port is the picturesque settlement of Gavathas , where most of the inhabitants are engaged in fishing, while tourism is a growing employment sector. According to legend, the lyre and the head of Orpheus were found here after he was killed by the Maenads.

At a short distance from the settlement is the Monastery of Perivolia, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is decorated with remarkable Byzantine frescoes.

hellas lesvos

A village is known worldwide for its ouzo, and, of course, the large village of Plomari could not be without an ouzo museum.

Today, in the picturesque Plomari of Lesvos , technology coexists with history and tradition. Next to the modern, privately owned distilleries of the Varvagianni Distillery is the Ouzo Museum of the Varvagiannis family.

The museum exhibits the first tools used for bottling and affixing the famous Blue label and the first cauldron built in 1858 in Constantinople, in which centuries-old secrets and techniques were tested to give birth to the recipes of the Varvagiannis family.

In the area of Plomari, you could not miss the beaches with the best of them Ag. Isidore. Agios Isidoros is located 2 km after Plomari in a tourist area with hotels and restaurants.

It is about 1500m long and is a beach with fine pebbles. It is an organized beach and is considered one of the cleanest beaches of Lesvos with very clear water and has been awarded a blue flag.

Kalloni is a large settlement in terms of population. It is located 40 kilometers northwest of Mytilini and spreads out in a large and fertile plain in the island's center.

The plain of Kalloni, the island's largest plain, with its abundance of water and rich soil, is the center of Lesvos, which has been densely populated since ancient times. In its fertile plain, olive trees, fruit trees, and potatoes are cultivated, while there are also smaller crops with vines and citrus fruits.

At a distance of 4 kilometers, there is Skala Kallonis, an organized commercial and picturesque port in the Gulf area with an abundance of fish taverns. With its port, Skala Kallonis, it has experienced quite intense tourism and has become one of the best-known tourist destinations on the island due to its central location.

Skala Kallonis, with its long sandy beach that is awarded every year with a Blue Flag and with the development of hotel units, is also famous for the well-known Kallonis sardine or "papalina" which is one of the classic Greek delicacies. In fact, as part of cultural events, the seafood "Festival of Sardines" is organized every summer.

The picturesqueness of the area is completed by the bay's salt marshes and the wetlands, which, due to the presence of a large number of rare birds, is a point of attraction for intense ecotourism. It is worth visiting the wetland, the area with the rarest species.

The coastal areas of the Gulf of Kalloni have been included in the "Natura 2000" network since they are an excellent refuge and breeding ground for rare and protected bird species. The salt marshes of Kalloni gather many species of birds, such as flamingos, which offer observers an impressive sight.

The best beaches on the Greek island of Lesvos

lesbos

Tarti is one of the best beaches on the island, with pebbles and a large area in the southern part, east of Plomari. The first taverna you will meet there, which is almost always full, is the best fish tavern in the area where the locals also eat.

Agios Stefanos

North of Mytilini, you should go to Mandamados , and on those shores to the east are the beaches of Agios Stefanos (St. Stefan), one of the few sandy beaches on the island. Many dirt roads will take you to various beautiful beaches.

Lesvos Nejdet Duzen Shutterstock

Vatera below Polychnitos has been voted one of the best beaches in Greece. I think it is the longest beach on the island and you can enjoy your swim.

Next to the beautiful Molyvos , to the east, there is Eftalou, a beautiful beach with large pebbles and stones, but it deepens abruptly, and you will not understand them.

With a family profile, excellent facilities for games, and water sports over 8 km, this beach will become your favorite. Around it, there are taverns, beach bars, and hotels.

Petra, Anaxos

sailboat lesvos

In the northern part of the island and to the left of Molyvos, there is Anaxos (Anaxos) below the village of Skoutaro , where it is also very beautiful and touristic.

Beach with umbrellas and sunbeds – everything for families and water sports enthusiasts. Three kilometers west of the village is the beach of Anaxos, an organized sandy beach with tavernas and a great view of Molyvos.

Open the umbrellas and relax on the sunbeds of Kanoni beach , in Thermi, north of Mytilini, where you will find beach bars and tavernas as well as water sports.

Skala Eresou

skala eresou lesvos

A beach with crystal clear waters, fine gray sand, and a length of 2.5 km. They are suitable for a casual atmosphere, while its remarkable infrastructure makes it one of the most important tourist resorts on the island with a special lifestyle – as the birthplace of Sappho , it is a classic destination for gays from all over the world.

Just 4 km from the village of Mesotopos, there is this beautiful sandy beach with the small plain to the Mallionta river . Although deserted, here you will also find a canteen with a few suggestions for food.

Near the village of Klio, this water oasis is the best secret. Crystal clear waters, red sand, and – if you are lucky – dolphins basking in the waters of the North Aegean! It is recommended to bring a cooler with the essentials to spend several hours there.

The sandy beach of Kalloni attracts those in the area to drink ouzo and taste the famous sardine. Bars and taverns are spread along it.

Saint Isidore

lesbos g7425094df 1280

The beach of Plomari will reward anyone who swims in its deep blue waters. Plus the green landscape, the fine gravel, and the excellent tourist infrastructure.

Sigri, Faneromeni

In the village of the same name, on the west of the lovely island, spread a towel on the sandy beach, admire the castle and take a dip in the shallow waters. It has many hotels, nice restaurants, and cafes around it. On the other side is the more deserted, huge beach of Faneromeni, which is often caught by the wind, so surfers will love it.

Lesbos Ipsilou

You will prefer Kampos, near Antissa, if you like... solitude. With large pebbles and fine sand just a few inches before you reach the sea, it's a good idea to bring supplies as there is nothing nearby. In Ancient Antissa, the beaches (some sandy and others pebbly) are shallow and surrounded by green plains. They are usually preferred by older people for the few but good fish restaurants. You will discover them coming from Kampos by crossing a river.

Gulf of Geras

There are many beaches in the bay, but the wide, sandy Tarti is just what you need for those who like fishing. There are taverns and well-kept guesthouses around.

Things to do on Lesvos island

Explore the castle of molyvos.

lesvos castle

Molyvos Castle is a great historical monument that stands tall on the island of Lesvos. The castle is open to visitors and is one of the best-preserved castles in the Mediterranean. It is worth spending some time here to explore the site and learn about its history.

The castle is also a popular cultural hub for the island and hosts many festivals, music concerts, and cultural events throughout the year, so it might be worth checking if there are any performances here during your visit to the island. It is located above the picturesque, traditional village of Molyvos, and the cobbled streets here are well worth a visit. You will find many traditional cafes and taverns to stop for refreshments and take in the beautiful views.

Visit the ancient theatre of Mytilene

Did you know that Mytilene has an ancient theater? This Hellenistic jewel (2nd century BC) is the most prominent public monument of the ancient city. It was built on the highest point of Mytilene, next to the inland walls, in an exceptional area that is believed to have been a grove in ancient times. It was also visible to those approaching the city from the sea through its two ports.

It is considered one of the most important theaters of the ancient world, as according to Plutarch in the Life of Pompey, it was the model on which the construction of the permanent stone theaters of Italy was based. Pompey, having a close relationship with the Lesbian historian and scholar Theophanes , liberated Mytilene in 62 BC.

The city celebrated the triumph of the Roman emperor in the theater. Pompey admired it and ordered his architects to design it and build a copy of it in Rome, but bigger and brighter. The capacity of the horseshoe-shaped hollow is estimated at approximately 18,000 spectators. It is worth visiting and admiring the surrounding area.

Stop by Panagia Glykofilousa

Agiassos vanaf de Olympos

At Panagia Glykofilousa , in the small town of Petra, you can follow the flight of 114 steps to the top of the rock, where you will find a beautiful church and courtyard offering a picturesque view overlooking the coast, mountains, and Rabbit Island. worth the trip to the top.

It is a place of pilgrimage for many Greeks, especially on the fifteenth of August, for the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin.

Go to Eftalou for its thermal baths.

Just 4 kilometers away from Molyvos , the beach of Eftalou, with its thermal baths, is hidden. I imagine you think that thermal baths are only for old people, but a test will convince you and above all it will relax you.

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union nations endorsed sweeping reforms to the bloc’s failed asylum system on Tuesday as campaigning for Europe-wide elections next month gathers pace, with migration expected to be an important issue.

EU government ministers approved 10 legislative parts of The New Pact on Migration and Asylum. It lays out rules for the 27 member countries to handle people trying to enter without authorization, from how to screen them to establish whether they qualify for protection to deporting them if they’re not allowed to stay.

Hungary and Poland, which have long opposed any obligation for countries to host migrants or pay for their upkeep, voted against the package but were unable to block it.

Mainstream political parties believe the pact resolves the issues that have divided member nations since well over 1 million migrants swept into Europe in 2015, most fleeing war in Syria and Iraq. They hope the system will starve the far right of vote-winning oxygen in the June 6-9 elections.

However, the vast reform package will only enter force in 2026, bringing no immediate fix to an issue that has fueled one of the EU’s biggest political crises, dividing nations over who should take responsibility for migrants when they arrive and whether other countries should be obligated to help.

Critics say the pact will let nations detain migrants at borders and fingerprint children. They say it’s aimed at keeping people out and infringes on their right to claim asylum. Many fear it will result in more unscrupulous deals with poorer countries that people leave or cross to get to Europe.

WHY ARE THE NEW RULES NEEDED?

Europe’s asylum laws have not been updated for about two decades. The system frayed and then fell apart in 2015. It was based on the premise that migrants should be processed, given asylum or deported in the country they first enter. Greece, Italy and Malta were left to shoulder most of the financial burden and deal with public discontent. Since then, the ID-check-free zone known as the Schengen Area has expanded to 27 countries, 23 of them EU members. It means that more than 400 million Europeans and visitors, including refugees, are able to move without showing travel documents.

WHO DO THE RULES APPLY TO?

Some 3.5 million migrants arrived legally in Europe in 2023. Around 1 million others were on EU territory without permission. Of the latter, most were people who entered normally via airports and ports with visas but didn’t go home when they expired. The pact applies to the remaining minority, estimated at around 300,000 migrants last year. They are people caught crossing an external EU border without permission, such as those reaching the shores of Greece, Italy or Spain via the Mediterranean Sea or Atlantic Ocean on boats provided by smugglers.

HOW DOES THE SYSTEM WORK?

The country on whose territory people land will screen them at or near the border. This involves identity and other checks -– including on children as young as 6. The information will be stored on a massive new database, Eurodac. This screening should determine whether a person might pose a health or security risk and their chances of being permitted to stay. Generally, people fleeing conflict, persecution or violence qualify for asylum. Those looking for jobs are likely to be refused entry. Screening is mandatory and should take no longer than seven days. It should lead to one of two things: an application for international protection, like asylum, or deportation to their home country.

WHAT DOES THE ASYLUM PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

People seeking asylum must apply in the EU nation they first enter and stay until the authorities there work out what country should handle their application. It could be that they have family, cultural or other links somewhere else, making it more logical for them to be moved. The border procedure should be done in 12 weeks, including time for one legal appeal if their application is rejected. It could be extended by eight weeks in times of mass movements of people. Procedures could be faster for applicants from countries whose citizens are not often granted asylum. Critics say this undermines asylum law because applicants should be assessed individually, not based on nationality. People would stay in “reception centers” while it happens, with access to health care and education. Those rejected would receive a deportation order.

WHAT DOES DEPORTATION INVOLVE?

To speed things up, a deportation order is supposed to be issued automatically when an asylum request is refused. A new 12-week period is foreseen to complete this process. The authorities may detain people throughout. The EU’s border and coast guard agency would help organize joint deportation flights. Currently, less than one in three people issued with an order to leave are deported. This is often due to a lack of cooperation from the countries these people come from.

HOW HAS THE ISSUE OF RESPONSIBILITIES VS OBLIGATIONS BEEN RESOLVED?

The new rules oblige countries to help an EU partner under migratory pressure. Support is mandatory, but flexible. Nations can relocate asylum applicants to their territory or choose some other form of assistance. This could be financial -– a relocation is evaluated at 20,000 euros ($21,462) per person -– technical or logistical. Members can also assume responsibility for deporting people from the partner country in trouble.

WHAT CHALLENGES LIE AHEAD?

Two issues stand out: Will member countries ever fully enact the plan, and will the EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, enforce the new rules when it has chosen not to apply the ones already in place? The commission is due to present a Common Implementation Plan by June. It charts a path and timeline to get the pact working over the next two years, with targets that the EU and member countries should reach. Things could get off to a rocky start. Hungary, which has vehemently opposed the reforms, takes over the EU’s agenda-setting presidency for six months on July 1.
