13 Tips For Hiring A Campervan In Australia With Travellers Autobarn

Wondering what it’s like hiring a campervan in Australia from Travellers Autobarn? With so many campervan companies to choose from, I’m sure you must have your reservations!

Luckily for you, we recently went on a road trip to Broken Hill from Sydney and used a Travellers Autobarn campervan to experience a trip to the outback! So, I’m going to take you through everything I would’ve liked to have known, before I went on a road trip with this campervan hire from Sydney.

Table of Contents

1. Why choose Travellers Autobarn

travellers-autobarn-review

Travellers Autobarn have a focus on budget travellers planning a self drive trip, which makes sense as it was founded by two ex backpackers. This means they definitely understand all of the little things you probably didn’t realise you’ll need on your Australia road trip.

Their website even compares the price differences between a bus ticket and their van hire so you can see the benefits ahead of obtaining your quick quote.

2. Road trip vs flying in Australia

travellers-autobarn-review-campervan-hire-in-australia

You can easily fly to all the major bucket list sights in Australia and have the best time. But in doing that, you may miss the beautiful regional towns and stunning National Parks in between that make Australia the unique place it is.

When you hire a campervan and plan a road trip, you feel that utter freedom to control your own schedule and explore to your hearts content. Plus, you never know, you might want to spend longer in some places rather than others.

3. What was I apprehensive about?

travellers-autobarn-review-campervan-hire-in-australia

Driving a vehicle that is not your own is always a bit nerve wrecking, especially if that vehicle is the size of a van. As budget travellers, the last thing you would want to spend your money on is accidental damage to your rental.

Travellers Autobarn campervan hire focuses on travel in the most cost effective way and offer packages to cover the bond costs and alleviate your worries.

It was my first trip with a new friend and naturally I was apprehensive about living in close quarters. But, you’ll soon see in this article that there was nothing to worry about!

4. which van to choose.

travellers-autobarn-review-campervan-hire-in-australia

One of the things that may be overwhelming is trying to work out the type of campervan hire you need.

We chose the Chubby, a Toyota Hiace 2 berth compact camper , with a lounge/sleeping area in the back and a kitchenette accessible from the boot which was perfect for a 6 day trip.

As we knew we would be travelling thousands of kilometres in a short time, we opted for a campervan without a high top, so we didn’t have to worry about potential high winds slowing us down.

Another compact option in Travellers Autobarn range would be one of their station wagons which is a classic Aussie 60’s car you can sleep in, a great vehicle for budget travellers looking for that camping experience.

If you are planning a longer road trip with a relaxed journey, a hitop, such as their Kuga van, may be for you as the kitchenette is inside the main area and there is space to stand in the van.

5. No Aussie Drivers Licence?

travellers-autobarn-review-campervan-hire-in-australia

If you are an international traveller or an expat reading this article, you must check the local license requirements as you may need to obtain an international one. As a Brit with a full UK drivers license, I did not need to obtain an international equivalent in Australia.

The Autobarn campervan is either manual or automatic transmission with no guarantee on preferences so make sure you are comfortable with both.

FYI, Travellers autobarn have a FREE APP , providing you with directions to helpful things such as free campgrounds, water bubblers, ATM’s. and gas refills for your gas cooker.

6. How much are the extras?

travellers-autobarn-campervan-hire

Of course with all rentals, we must be covered for any accidental damage. Travellers Autobarn offer 3 options for protection:

  • Standard Protection, $3,000 bond to be paid at pick up, $0 additional cost per day.
  • Midway Protection, $1,500 bond to be paid at pick up, $20 additional cost per day.
  • Protection Plus, $0 bond, $30 additional cost per day. Please note that the bond can be held for up to 14 days after your rental end date so account for this in your decision

7. What’s included

travellers autobarn australia

Travellers Autobarn is a cost effective way for anyone looking to explore Australia as their vans come with all the essential camping equipment you need. I will list the tools included in the Chubby van and most vans but there are also items you can pay extra for your comfort:

  • 2 Sleeping Bags
  • 1 Mattress Sheet
  • 1 Large Ice Box
  • 1 Gas Cooker and 3 Gas Canisters
  • 1 Tea Towel
  • 1 Sponge and washing up liquid
  • Kitchen essentials included frying pan, pan, kettle, 2 places, 2 mugs, 2 cups, 2 bowls and cutlery
  • Teabags, coffee and sugar
  • Tap with running water when the water pump is connected at camp sites
  • Electricity plug for campsites
  • Fire Extinguisher

8. Extras you can hire

travellers autobarn australia

Camping Chairs – If you are a sunrise chaser like me, then I would highly recommending adding these. Nothing better than sneaking out the van, putting up your chair and enjoying the sunrise view!

Outdoor Camping Table

Child Booster Seat

Fan or Heater

GPS – Might be wise if you are going to remote areas with no phone signal

9. what to bring.

travellers autobarn australia

It’s hard to know ahead of the trip what you should pack for the van, so I’m going to help you out. These are the basics I packed from home for a short trip but you may want more comforts for a longer hire.

Please note, I haven’t included my items bought from the supermarket as these are personal preference.

But, I would say to be mindful that there is only a gas cooker, so anything that can be fried or boiled is the way to go. The Autobarn icebox would fit food to last 2-3 days.

  • Ice packs for the cooler
  • Salt, Pepper & herbs

10. Luggage options

travellers autobarn australia

Tips about clothes for those of you who overthink and overpack (me included); there is under seat storage but it is compact so I would recommend bringing an overnight bag rather than suitcase. Once the bed is up, it can be harder to access under the seats so I would put my bag into the drivers cabin for easy access at night.

I would highly recommend a pair or thongs or sliders that you can keep on the internal step in the van for those quick toilet trips at the campsite.

Another great tip would be to pack a smaller bag for walking to the shower blocks so you don’t have to balance your outfit, towel and toiletries across the campsite (honestly, I was a pro camper by the end of the trip)!

11. What my experience was like using Travellers Autobarn

travellers autobarn australia

Wondering what my experience was like driving a campervan for the first time in Australia? I was really worried about reverse parking, but luckily our van had a reverse camera in the rearview mirror which actually made parking surprisingly smooth.

There is so much space in the drivers cabin and the middle seat turns into a table for a much needed coffee cup and snacks on a long drive. As soon as I plugged my phone into the USB socket to charge, it auto connected to the audio so I could play my favourite road trip playlists!

There’s also a phone cradle included so I could safely use Google maps.

Make sure you check your data coverage for remote areas and maybe download your route offline beforehand as a precaution.

Fear not though, you’ll find an atlas in the van as well!

Even though we had no issues with the van or breakdowns, it was a huge comfort to know the campervan hire included 24/7 roadside assist service. If you are nervous about planning your first campervan trip in the near future, Travellers Autobarn takes these worries for you so you can just focus on having that amazing experience!

12. What’s it like sleeping in the van?

travellers autobarn australia

As stated at the beginning of this article I was apprehensive about being in such close quarters with a friend (I like my space). However, I was pleasantly surprised by the space in the purpose built campervan.

The bed was super easy to assemble, the dining table comes apart and slides into the space between the lounge seats to create a bed base. The back seat clicks down all the way to the kitchenette to create an extra long double bed.

The standard size of a double bed is 1.4 by 2 meters but the bed in the camper is 1.5 by 2.3m which i’m sure would be a relief for tall adults. I wouldn’t know about that, but it was a relief to sleep with extra space to stretch out and know I wouldn’t kick my travelling partner.

The pillows are soft and the mattress is made up of the seat cushions used in the lounge set up.

Although thin, it is comfy and I was not sore at all at the end of the six day trip. But I would say, do not to expect the same support as a full mattress at home.

There are curtains for all windows and the driving cabin and once closed, you get complete privacy. There are two lights in the main area which can be set to blue night lights or full lights. If you hook up to a powered site, then there are two handy USB and plug sockets for charging your devices.

13. Exceptional service

travellers autobarn australia

One of the things that really impressed me about Travellers Autobarn is the level of service and communication they provided. Two days before returning, I received a friendly text from them with a reminder on how to return the vehicle to the Sydney drop off.

I needed to return with a full tank of petrol, relatively clean inside and outside and a full gas tank/canisters. They also offer a prepaid option for petrol and gas refills so you don’t have to worry about these at drop off.

Once they did their quick checks, I handed over the keys and filled out a service review and I was good to go. As said at the beginning of this article, the bond could take up to 14 days to return but I received mine back within 7 days.

travellers autobarn australia

The best thing about a campervan hire is the freedom it gives you if you are budget travellers, to be able to hire your vehicle and accommodation in one saves a lot of money.

If you are planning a self drive trip, no company would understand what you need more than Travellers Autobarn.

My favourite part of my whole trip was waking up in the spacious van before sunrise, making myself a tea from the gas cooker in the kitchenette, setting up my camping chair and watching the sunrise. You can’t get this experience from a hotel room.

Would I book again? I sure would! You can check out their van hire from Sydney, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Cairns and Perth, with Darwin and Alice Springs coming soon at the time of writing!

Big thanks to Travellers Autobarn for hooking us up with the campervan for our road trip to Broken Hill. We would definitely book with them again!

Travellers Autobarn Review – Campervan Rentals & Prices

Home | Travel | Travellers Autobarn Review – Campervan Rentals & Prices

Travellers Autobarn is a campervan rental company that we’ve used on several occasions, both in the U.S. and abroad. The Australia-based company has been around for over 30 years now, although it launched in the United States just a few years ago. Even so, it has quickly become one of the best places for RV rentals in the USA .

The company is concentrated in the Western U.S., so we’ve rented Autobarn campervans for a couple of trips around Las Vegas and the West Coast. More recently, we rented the Kuga campervan from Travelers Autobarn for an exciting journey through New Zealand. I can wholeheartedly recommend this rental service, especially if you’re looking for a vehicle that’s safe and comfortable, but also within your budget.

If you want to cut right to the chase and rent a camping van, you can go straight to the Travellers website . Otherwise, keep reading for my full Travellers Autobarn review , what we love about it, and why it’s one of the best campervan rentals in the U.S.

My honest Travellers Autobarn review – 3 campervan rentals later

As I said, we’ve used Travelers Autobarn a few times now, so we’ve become quite familiar with their campervans and the whole rental experience.

We rented the Kuga campervan each time, as it’s the perfect model for us. This high-roof campervan is efficiently designed and has a dining area, sleeping area, and a full kitchenette. I’ll share more about the Kuga van and the other Travellers camper van rentals in a bit, but just know that every rental comes with free unlimited miles, which is a huge bonus.

Van pick-up, autobarn travellers

My honest Travellers Autobarn review

Since we travel as a couple, we have plenty of space in our campervan. That said, the Kuga model is designed to accommodate up to 3 people, which I can imagine would be a bit uncomfortable, but doable. The loft area converts into a single bed, but since we didn’t need it, we used it for extra storage space.

I also love that we can prepare our own meals in the van. This is perfect for when we want to explore more remote areas for extended periods of time. The campervan comes with a sink, fridge, and gas cooktop, powered by the van’s battery. There is also a microwave, but this is powered by the van’s solar panels, so that’s something to be aware of.

The campervan is tall enough for us to be able to stand up inside it, which makes it a lot easier to move around (Dan is 5’ 11”). Plus, we can convert the dining area into a bed in less than 2 minutes without having to open the doors. However, if you’re in the driver’s cab, you must exit the vehicle to get into the back part of the van.

Sleeping area and loft bed, travellers autobarn app

Travellers Autobarn review

During the rainy days, we often use the dining area for work. We always travel with a portable Wi-Fi device , the Solis hotspot , so we can have reliable internet connection everywhere, but there are also other awesome options if you need internet while traveling .

As for driving, it’s an automatic transmission, so it’s quite easy to maneuver. It might take a bit of getting used to since it’s more top-heavy than a regular minivan, but it’s not difficult at all.

And, of course, the price for a Travellers camper van rental is very competitive. The company markets itself as a budget rental service, so you can find great deals. That said, the prices vary depending on the season, as well as where you pick up the vehicle. We’ve always picked up our campervan in Vegas, and the daily rate was around $120/day. Again, you get free unlimited miles as well as 24/7 roadside assistance, making this one of the best campervan rentals in Las Vegas .

The only con for us is that some of the vehicles are older, with some dating back to 2012. However, the company regularly services and updates its fleet, and the interiors were overhauled in 2020.

Travellers Autobarn locations in the USA

Travelers Autobarn USA has three locations in the Western U.S. At each location, the pick-up times are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and the drop-off times are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The Las Vegas location is just a few blocks from the Strip, so it’s super convenient. You can pick up your Travellers campervan after visiting the top attractions in Vegas . The Travellers website even has popular road trip ideas to inspire your next adventure.

You can also find Travellers camper van rentals in Los Angeles , California. The office is in Inglewood, so you can check out LA’s best attractions , and then head out on the road to explore the more natural areas and parks.

travellers autobarn hi top model campervan

There is a third Autobarn location in San Francisco , specifically across the San Francisco Bay, in Hayward. If you want to start your trip in this city, a good idea would be to see the best places in San Francisco , then hop aboard your campervan for a road trip adventure.

Travellers Autobarn announced that it has two more U.S. locations coming soon: Denver and Seattle . So, you’ll have even more options for renting a cheap Travellers campervan and exploring the great United States wilderness.

Other Travellers Autobarn locations around the world

There are additional Travellers Autobarn locations outside the United States. The company actually started in Australia , so there are offices throughout the country, including in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, and Darwin.

They also offer campervan hires in Auckland and Christchurch, in New Zealand, as well as an office in Tokyo, Japan .

Types of Travellers Autobarn campervans

Choosing the right vehicle for your trip can be tricky, so Travelers Autobarn makes it easy by offering 4 types of campervans. You can find more details about each type below.

Keep in mind that an optional “living equipment” bundle is available with any rental for a one-time fee. It includes things like cutlery, pots/pans, cleaning supplies, sleeping bags, and linens. Also, Travelers campers in the USA aren’t self-contained, but you can purchase a portable toilet for a one-time fee, so it’s something to consider if you want to do some dispersed or free camping.

Minivan Rental – Seats 2-5 • Dodge Grand Caravan (2012 – 2017 Model)

The Travellers minivan rental is a converted Dodge Grand Caravan. It’s good for weekend tent camping trips to nearby locations. Since it’s smaller than the other vans, it gets slightly higher mileage plus, it’s easier to drive.

Minivan rental, travellers camper van rental

You can add the living equipment bundle to this rental for $45, and it includes a 2-person tent, two camping chairs, an outdoor table, a gas cooktop, and cooking supplies. There is also the option to rent a folding foam mattress with sleeping bags and pillows.

Hi-Top Campervan – Seats 2-3 • Sleeps 2-3 • Chevrolet Express Campervan (2014 – 2016 Interior)

The Hi-Top Campervan from Travellers Autobarn is a Chevrolet Express campervan that sleeps 2-3 people. It has an older interior than the other campervans, but also tends to have lower daily rates, so it’s a cheaper alternative.

Campervan rental in San Francisco, autobarn locations

The van has a full kitchenette with a 2-burner gas stove, a fridge, a sink, and a microwave. It also has an 11-gallon water tank, 120V and USB plug-ins, a double bed fit-out, and a single bed in the loft area. You can add the living equipment bundle to this rental for $45.

Kuga Campervan – Seats 2-3 • Sleeps 2-3 • Chevrolet Express Campervan (2019 – 2021 Interior)

The Kuga campervan is Travelers Autobarn ’s most popular model and our personal favorite. It has a full kitchenette with a 2-burner gas stove, a fridge, a sink, and a microwave. You’ll also have an 11-gallon water tank, 120V and USB plug-ins, a double bed fit-out, and a single bed in the loft area.

Kuga campervan autobarn travellers

Travellers Autobarn Kuga campervan

This Autobarn campervan has slightly newer interiors compared to the Hi-Top Campervan, as well as exterior lights and rooftop solar panels. You can add the living equipment bundle to this rental for $45.

Hi5 Campervan – Seats 4-5 • Sleeps 4-5 • Ford Transit Campervan (2022 or Newer)

Finally, the Hi5 Campervan is the largest Travellers campervan available, as well as the newest. It features a full kitchenette with a 2-burner gas stove, two fridges, a sink, and a microwave. There is also an 11-gallon water tank, 120V and USB plug-ins, two double beds, exterior lights, and rooftop solar panels.

HI5 travellers autobarn reviews in the usa

The custom-built interior of this campervan hire grants you more storage room and a living area, plus a second row of seating behind the front cabin. It can sleep 4-5 people, so it’s ideal for families or groups. You can also add the living equipment bundle to this rental for a one-time fee of $75.

Travellers Autobarn insurance options

While Travelers Autobarn gives you the option to forego insurance, I always recommend purchasing insurance, so you’re covered in case anything happens. Besides, Travellers Autobarn’s insurance options are straightforward:

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): Covers damage to your campervan, includes protection for 2 tires and the front windshield. $13/day ($25/day for Hi5 Campervans).
  • Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI): Up to $500,000 in protection against 3 rd parties (other vehicles, property, or people). $13.99 ($16.50 for Hi5 Campervans).
  • Protection Plus : Includes CDW and SLI. $26.99 ($41.50 for Hi5 Campervans)
  • Minimum Cover : $0. You’re responsible for any and all damages.

It’s always a good idea to purchase insurance! You don’t want to risk having to pay thousands of dollars for any damages caused by you or someone else.

If you’re traveling from outside the country, don’t forget your travel insurance for the USA . Health care is ridiculously expensive here!

Price of Travellers Autobarn campervan rentals

One of the best things about Travellers Autobarn is that it offers highly competitive rates. That said, the price of your rental depends on several factors, such as the pick-up location, the type of campervan, and the season.

Below, you can see the prices for a Travellers van rental for a 7-day trip and a 30-day trip. For this comparison, I selected Las Vegas as the pick-up and drop-off location.

*Sales tax and insurance not included

Travelers Autobarn ’s daily rates tend to be lower for longer trips, so you can save a lot of money if you’re traveling for several weeks or taking a month-long journey. You’ll find the lowest rates on the company’s website, and if you check the “Specials” page, you may find limited-time offers.

Also, your rental comes with free unlimited miles, 24/7 roadside assistance, a 30-day free trial to The Dyrt’s campground app, and discounts at select RV parks. All these benefits make Travellers Autobarn one of the best places to rent a campervan in the USA .

Travellers Autobarn promo codes & discounts

The Autobarn Travellers rates are already very good, but if you’re looking to save even more money, you can take a look at the website’s “Specials” page . Just make sure you read the terms and conditions to see what’s included and not included in these limited-time offers.

Travellers Autobarn discount for long hires

You can save on your Travelers camper van rental by extending the length of your trip. The “long-hire” discount is automatically applied to rentals over 7, 14, and 21 days. This discount lowers the daily rate 5%-20%, so you can save quite a lot. One-way fees are waived for any rentals over 28 days.

Travellers Autobarn special deals

Throughout the year, Travellers Autobarn offers special discounts for certain locations. For example, 15% off rentals out of Las Vegas and Los Angeles during some months. Check the website’s “Specials” page for more information on current Travellers Autobarn deals.

Travellers Autobarn relocation deals

Another special offer you can find on the website is a relocation deal. These types of discounts change throughout the year but can be a great deal if you’re flexible with your travel dates.

Travellers Autobarn special offers, travellers autobarn terms and conditions

For example, you may find a Las Vegas to San Francisco relocation deal that includes 3 free days and 700 miles. However, the special only applies to certain Autobarn campervans . Also, you’ll be charged for any excess miles (50 cents/mile) and days ($99/day).

Travellers Autobarn discount for U.S. military personnel & veterans

Lastly, U.S. military service members and veterans can get 10% off their Travellers campervan for rental periods of 7 days or longer. To get the discount, you must contact Travellers Autobarn customer service and present valid documentation.

10 Things that make Travellers Autobarn the best campervan rental in the U.S.

There are plenty of reasons why Travellers Autobarn is considered one of the best campervan rentals in the USA . Below, I’ll share the top 10 reasons why Travelers Autobarn stands out from the rest.

1. Space-efficient conversions

Travellers campervans are ideal for couples, which is why they’re so perfect for us. The Kuga and Hi-Top vans can accommodate 2-3 people, while the Hi5 vans can sleep 4-5. In addition to a full kitchenette, there is a convenient dining area with a double bed fit-out, plus a loft area that can be used for storage or an additional bed.

dining area travellers autobarn reviews

One of the coolest things about the campers from Travelers Autobarn is that you can easily convert the dining area to a sleeping area in less than 2 minutes without having to open the van’s doors or stepping outside.

We visited New Zealand during our 10-month around-the-world trip and we were traveling with two big suitcases, plus two big camera bags. However, we had plenty of room in our campervan to move around comfortably.

2. Fully-equipped campervans

Travelers’ camper van rentals come with everything you need for life on the road. Your camper comes with a full kitchenette, which includes a decent-sized fridge, a microwave, a sink, and a gas cooktop. You’ll also have plenty of storage space for dry goods as well as luggage and equipment.

Campervan kitchenette, travelers autobarn usa

Fully-equipped campervans

The vans also have an 11-gallon water tank with a 25-foot hose, charging ports, and USB plug-ins. The Kuga and Hi5 campervans also have rooftop solar panels, so you can enjoy short-term off-grid living.

We also appreciated the battery capacity since on our New Zealand trip it rained non-stop for 3 days, and we were able to work on our laptops without driving around or draining the batteries.

3. Free unlimited miles

One of the best things about renting a campervan from Travelers Autobarn is that you get free unlimited miles, regardless of which vehicle you choose. So, there’s no need to worry about taking a detour or circling the lot looking for a parking spot.

4. Great campervan rental prices

In addition to free unlimited miles, Travellers Autobarn has highly competitive daily rates, making them one of the best options for budget-conscious travelers. You can get a campervan rental for as low as $50/day, and insurance costs as little as $13/day.

Of course, keep in mind that the prices depend on things like your rental location, the length of your trip, the type of van you rent, and the season.

5. 24/7 roadside assistance

Another perk of renting from Travelers Autobarn is that you’ll have 24/7 access to their roadside assistance team. So, if you get stuck with a flat tire, you need a jump-start, the vehicle breaks down, or anything else, help is just a phone call away.

Driving in New Zealand, travellers autobarn campervan

24/7 roadside assistance

Travellers Autobarn can also help with any questions or concerns you may have, be it a mysterious light on your dashboard or you’re worried about running out of gas. To reach them, simply dial 1-800-469-4790.

So far, we haven’t had to use roadside assistance, and I hope to keep it that way!

6. Super quick pick-up/drop-off process

Once you confirm your reservation, you’ll receive email alerts in the days leading up to your pick-up time with all the necessary information. You can also complete the online check-in to make the in-person pick-up process super quick and easy. You’ll also receive email notifications before your drop-off date.

After reading this Travellers Autobarn review , it’s clear that this rental company has way more advantages than disadvantages. To summarize, here are the most important pros and cons of Travellers Autobarn :

Overall Travelers Autobarn is an amazing choice, especially if you’re looking for a budget-friendly campervan rental. The Kuga van from Travellers is the perfect vehicle for our road trip adventures, providing plenty of storage, sleeping space, and a full kitchenette. Best of all, we get free unlimited miles with every rental, on top of the already competitive rates.

Travellers doesn’t allow pets, but that’s not a problem for us. And while some of the models are older, all of the vehicles are regularly serviced. So far, we have never had to call roadside assistance! If you’re in the western USA, this is by far one of the best companies you can rent from.

With an extensive range of vehicles for hire, Travellers Autobarn is still one of the most in-demand rental companies in the country. They continue to cater to the budget market, with options for backpackers, couples, families, and groups of friends. Also, they have new additions to their depot―Alice Spring and Byron Bay.

Travellers Autobarn is an award-winning campervan hire company in Australia that supplies 2 to 5 berth campervans, cars, and motorhomes. They are one of the few suppliers in Australia that will rent to 18-21yo clients.

About Travellers Autobarn

Established in 1993, Travellers Autobarn has now 8 depots around Australia: Alice Springs, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. They are a large campervan hire in Australia that rents compact campers aimed at the budget and youth markets. A slow upgrade of their campers shows that they may be starting to head for a wealthier market. Additionally, they are one of the limited campervan hire companies in the country that allow rentals to under 21 years old. Accordingly, they are quite a charm for young backpackers and budget travellers.

Travellers Autobarn's selection of rental vehicles is broad enough to cater for different sizes. They have campervans and motorhomes that accommodate couples, a family of 4 and a group of 5. The Budgie and the Station Wagons go out as their cheapest choices while the newer Hi5 model acts as the priciest among all on set. The units on offer are either run by Mitsubishi or Toyota Hiace models, with 2005 as the oldest models and 2013 as the newest.

The Vehicles

Station wagon.

Truly a backpacker classic, the Station Wagon is a simple 2 berth campervan built on a 2005 - 2010 Ford Falcon Stationwagon model.  An older campervan, this one is surprisingly cheaper than a bus, though way more straightforward. There are no frills at all, aside from the seating area/ storage space that acts as your sleeping option at night and the kitchen facilities at the rear for outside cooking. You can opt for a dome tent if you want to have more room for stretching.

travellers autobarn australia

The cheapest campervan on offer, the Budgie is a simple campervan with a layout and amenities that have been tried and tested by many budget campervan hire companies. The rear seats fold out to take up most the rear for the bed at night. On the other hand, the kitchenette is accessed by putting up the rear door. Since this is a Mitsubishi-based vehicle, this may be a little noisier and less comfortable to drive than the Hiace model. Additionally, the age of the vehicle means that the tech ability of the entertainment system will leave something to be desired. On the bright side, approximately 50% of the campervans come with roof racks for extra storage of weatherproof gear.

Chubby Campervan

travellers autobarn australia

The “Chubby” budget van, is built on the Mitsubishi Express with an age range of 3-4 years old.  Each Chubby is individually painted and the fittings are pretty much industry standard― sleeps 2, esky for cold storage, kitchenette sink, food storage at the back, and cooking with the rear door up. There are a handful of companies that are adding awnings/tents to the back door to protect you from the elements whilst cooking, and the Chubby is one of these. The “easy to assemble” awning comes standard with the hire and can save you from getting wet if you have to cook while it is raining. Overall, the awning is that main thing setting this vehicle apart from its closest competitors. One final thing to note though is that they have a headphone jack in the CD player to plug in your iPod. These are excruciatingly rare so keep that in mind if the music you listen to in your travels is high on importance agenda.

HiTop Campervan

travellers autobarn australia

The HiTop is the next price level up. This model is for those that want a little more room and a little more luxury. Seating and sleeping 3, this unit allows for sleeping upstairs and downstairs―1 up and 2 down. This would be great if you have a child or friend coming along. Cooking facilities allow for entirely inside cooking and it comes with a fridge and a microwave. The microwave will only run when connected to mains power like when camped a caravan park or similar. The fridge is dual power so will run on the house battery and the mains. Like nearly all budget campervans, it is a manual gear vehicle (stick shift), so if you can’t drive one of those, you will have to move up a price range or two. The beauty of the hi-top is that you can stand upright inside the vehicle.  Hence, this is a fantastic option for longer trips or for taller people. It also allows for extra storage in the area above the drivers head. Never fear, though, this vehicle already has plenty of cupboard space inside. The downside of the model is that the extra height causes extra drag on the vehicle and the fuel economy is reduced. If doing a super long journey, this will have some impact on fuel bills.

travellers autobarn australia

Ideal for bigger families, the Hi5 Campervan is built on a longer wheelbase Toyota Hiace. Though the company claims this campervan to be 5 people, this model is technically suitable for 4 adults or 1 couple with 2 or 3 kids as there are only two double beds. The campervan is the biggest vehicle and it comes with amazing cooking and storing facilities like a large fridge, microwave, sink, and gas stove. Since this one has an interior kitchen, your cooking sessions can be done inside the vehicle without restraining your movements. Stand up freely while witnessing the scenic countryside.

Kuga Campervan

travellers autobarn australia

The difference between the normal HiTop campervan and the Kuga Campervan is the newness. The Kuga vehicles are newer and hence have overall less wear and tear. The fittings and upholstery are nicer and any recent design improvements are going to be found in these vehicles. One new design element is the slide-out bench that pops out through the side door, but that is hardly a deal maker. Generally, there are more lights, prettier laminate on the cupboards, thicker cushions, and even carpet on the ceiling but the overall design of the vehicle is the same. So, if you like a little more “pamper” on your journeys, this is the one for you. Unfortunately, if you want to be able to play your iPod, you will have to rent the Chubby because you can’t plug into the hi-tech AM/FM radios―it’s a Toyota thing.

Budget Campervan

The Budget Campervan is the oldest 2-3 berth hi-top in the range. It is nice to see that Travellers Autobarn doesn't try and cover it up. They openly tell you that it is older, got higher KMs, and has more wear and tear. They are the cheapest campervan in the hi-top range for a reason. If you are simply looking for a campervan that will go from A to B with only the basics included and you are not concerned about shiny new objects, then this model may be for you.

With Travellers Autobarn, you are given three options: Standard Protection at $0/ day with $3,000 liability, Midway Protection at $20/day for with $1,500 liability, and Protection Plus at $30/day with $0 liability. The Protection Plus also includes coverage for single-vehicle roll-over or single-vehicle write-off. Accordingly, these insurance options are paid thru a credit card at the time of vehicle pick-up.

Really, Travellers Autobarn should only be on your radar if you are looking for older, or more importantly, cheaper models. Whilst they are introducing models as young as 2013, they are not going to be the majority of the fleet. Generally, there a few complaints about the company and that is a sign that they do things well, but go in with your eyes open. You can’t rent a campervan that is 10 years old and under $45pd and expect great things. Their fleet of older campervans is highly suitable for those who want to save money and still get a decent holiday on wheels. So, If you are looking for the newest kind of vehicle with all the frills and fancies, then you might not have the best options from Travellers Autobarn.

Overall, Travellers Autobarn is recommended if looking in the budget range. Here, you can secure an affordable unit that is well functional and nicely furnished with camping essentials.

We hired the budget campervan for 3 weeks and had no issues at all. The inside was a bit worn out but that's to be expected considering how cheap it was. Would definitely recommend hiring from Travellers Autobarn.

I’ve never been much of a reviewer but feel the need to let other travelers know. The car I rented was not registered, so I could’ve been fined $1,500 had I not gotten an understanding police officer. I was there over Christmas so no mechanics were open and all the accommodation around me was booked up. TA expected me to put my whole vacation on hold and not drive for days. Due to the holiday it took a while to process the new paperwork I guess, so even after they told me I was good to go I got pulled over AGAIN. At that point TA told me they would drive out a new car for me to use instead since it was taking so long to process. So apparently that was an option the entire time!!! I was furious. Additionally, the whole first week I had it one of the back doors didn’t lock so someone could’ve easily broken in until I took it to a mechanic. I get the feeling they don’t take good care of their cars at all. All the customer service people I spoke to were very nice, but I shouldn’t have had to spend so much time of a once-in-a-lifetime vacation on the phone with TA . Also, note that the free camping gear provided is terrible. The two man tent was barely big enough for just me and I’m only 5’4”. The sleeping bag was terribly thin so I was freezing until I could get one of those emergency blankets. Crinkly but effective. Just a terrible experience overall .

" Pretty happy "

We rented a Budget Hi Top Camper for three months in the Australian winter for around $3300 (through an agency). One of the cheapest deals we could find, particularly for a Hi Top. The alternative was a Jucy El Cheapo, a Toyota Estima, a much smaller, fuel inefficient SUV. Overall we were really pleased with the service Traveller's Autobarn offered. The price was great and as it was a budget version we were happy to overlook the wear and tear on the van (e.g. clunky cupboards, bed not that comfortable, CD player broken, air vents not working properly, central locking broken). You can't expect to get a pristine van for this price. What we didn't like was the fact we had to go out and buy blankets because the thin sleeping bags were completely inadequate for the time of year. We found TAB to be pleasant and helpful on the phone and during pick up and drop off. We have separate insurance to cover all the things that aren't covered by the TAB insurance - single vehicle roll overs, hitting animals, windscreen damage etc, so I would look into that before buying their own insurance (we used rentalcover.com). We weren't pressured into adding on extras during pick up like you often are when renting vehicles. Our van did break down once (we drove a seriously long way in it) and we found TAB themselves to be very helpful. Their roadside assistance helpline that is outsourced elsewhere was useless however. We broke down in the middle of nowhere and were told that we would have to pay for a tow to get us to the nearest town (this would cost $1800). This was in fact completely untrue. We ended up spending the night in the desert unable to sleep in the van as a result of this. The next day we spoke to TAB themselves who reassured us that this wasn't the case and they sent out a recovery truck at no cost to ourselves. We were refunded the downtime and back on the road shortly. Overall, I would recommend TAB if you are on a budget and it's not going to be the end of the world if your van has a few little quirks or breaks down. You are renting a vehicle with a serious amount of kms of the clock, so things may fail. We also felt that TAB were honest and weren't necessarily constantly trying to find ways to charge us extra. The rental is cheap, so there are some aspects of the rental which aren't as great as some of the more expensive companies - you can only drive 500 metres on a gravel road to a campsite which is really restrictive (other companies offer more) and the insurance as noted above is not that comprehensive. If money was no object, I'd rent from another company that offers newer vans that can go further on gravel roads (I think Jucy allows you to travel further offroad to a campsite...). I'd probably rent a 4x4 to be honest, however, these guys are a good budget choice, just make sure you fully read and understand the contract you are signing. One more thing, TAB don't actually take the bond from your credit card, they just freeze it. This means you don't get charged foreign transaction fees. Other companies take the money and the fees can amount to a couple of hundred dollars.

The stationwagon is simply not as advertised, you can't really sleep in the car, no curtains or tinted windows, no rainshields on the windows - you can't open the windows when it rains, no moskito nets, no plain surface to sleep. customer service very disappointing. you are not allowed to drive at night or on gravel roads (which you definetely have to do to get to some places) - NEVER AGAIN!

Having recently rented a space wagon for a month, we have nothing but positives with regards to our experience with Travellers Autobarn. The entire process leading up to the rental was quick and straight forward making it very simple and easy to organise and pick up the car we wanted. The staff were also extremely informative about certain aspects such as toll roads and campsites around the country. Our space wagon was in very good condition, very clean and well equipped for camping whilst travelling the entire length of the East Coast. We highly recommend Travellers Autobarn and would definitely rent from them in the future. A great experience and a massive thanks to the company! Charles & Louise-Anne, Gibraltar.

I did a lot of car rentals in my life including big companies like Europcar, Hertz or Sixt as well as local rentals. I even rented a campervan in the USA with "Escape Campervans" which is basically Travellers Autobarn. I was happy with all's the rentals mentioned above and never had problems with those even in case of insurance or ticket issues. Even due to my very good experiences in the USA I decided to go again with Travellers Autobarn. I rented a campervan with Travellers Autobarn in Australia In 2016 for about 4 weeks. After research in the Internet and a lot of good experiences in forums they sounded like the best option for a budget campervan rental. So at first the good thinks I liked with Travelers Autobarn: 1. The car was very clean at the pick up. 2. Engine, breaks and tires had a good condition and seemed to get good maintenance. 3. Camping equipment was OK, bit to old and crappy so that we need to replace some small parts but at all allright. So the very necessary basics worked fine then. By what I really did not like is the service and how the company interacts withe there customers. Following points bothered me and in sum shaped my opinion to never rent again with this company: 1. After renting the car, Travellers Autobarn changed there pick up office in Melbourne for the car and did not send us any information about it. We just got lucky that somebody told us a day before in the hostel we stayed. I mean you can change your office but please send us mail and tell us about it Travelers Autobarn. 2. We had technical problems with paying the bond for the insurance (due to low credit card limits) and needed to upgrade the booked insurance package what we did not want. This wasn't a fault made by Travellers Autobarn, but the information about how they charge the bond on the credit card was pretty bad. Furthermore they just gave us the option to upgrade the insurance and pay a few hundred dollars more instead of the bond. So the flexibility of the company in cases like that can be better. We offered other ways to pay the bond like a bank account transfer or or a payment in 24 hours after increasing the limit on the cards - they did not accept. The one way of payment or not getting the car or upgrade the insurance. 3. The car was running OK like mentioned above (engine, breaks and tires), but the outside was horrible. The windscreen had 2 stone cracks, the car had bumps on both sides, the front and the back. OK it's a budget rental, but the employee who did the damage check of the car with us just marked the whole sides of the car on the record. In my eyes this is unprofessional. I asked an Australian car trader I met on the travels if that is usual business in Australia and he really complained about the record as well. 4. As we signed the contract we got explained in detail what we can be charged for (toll fees, speed limit tickets, parking fees, car damages, broken key, returning dirty car etc.). I remember the employee told us that we should be carefull not bending the car key because they have a lot of problems with it. Then he handed a bended key to us about 5 minutes later - not very professional Travellers Autobarn. 5. We got a small scratch from a stone in the windscreen after travelling with the car. So we had insurance for that and informed Travellers Autobarn via E-Mail. They wrote back that it's no problem but we should cover it with a sticker they store in the car for that issue. Unfortunately Travellers Autobarn forgot to do place the stickers in our car. It's just a tiny think but shows me one more time how they work. 6. As we returned the car in Brisbane we had to wait for about 1 hour before somebody had time to check our car and returns it. There was 1 employee in the office for about 8 customers who wanted to return or pick up a car. Sorry its not enough. I have seen some other employees there but they did not care about us and did other stuff - I think they haven't been responsible for the office stuff and did the maintenance on the cars. 7. After finishing our holidays I received a charge on my credit card with 75 AUD 7 weeks after returning the car and no further information from Travellers Autobarn. I knew it would be a ticket issue (it's part of the rental contract) and asked Travellers Autobarn by E-Mail to send me details. They did and it was an issue about a toll road used and not paid. I checked this payment and date and as far as I see I paid the toll fee. As I told travellers Autobarn and sended them the payment part from my credit card bill, they wrote me back that they haven't done an error on the issue and neither the toll road company and I have to pay the toll company. I think they never checked my complain and just send me prewritten standard mails that are matching for everybody. What bothers me most is the fact, that Travellers Autobarn did not send me details about the issue but charged my credit card. So I still had to pay the toll fee at the toll company, luckily I recognized the charge on my credit card and could ask what it is for otherwise I would not have known about that problem. So Traveler Autobarn what is the 75 AUD for if you even not inform your customer about a ticket? To sum up I have to say that I am honestly unhappy with the service and the communication Travelers Autobarn did. If I see the market for budget campervan rentals in Australia I would suggest everybody to hire with a different company there are enough other options.

" Good car, worth the money ! "

We travelled from Perth to Darwin and drove 7000kms with the station wagon during 1 month. Everything was fine on pickup. The car and the living equipment were very clean. We have our own Inflatable mattress so it was quite confortable to sleep in the car. When it was hot during night time, we slept in the tent they provide in the living equipment. Even if the car was a bit old (around 280 000km), it doesnt consume a lot : 9.5L/100Km We just had a problem the last day in Darwin with the battery. We called the road assistance and 30minutes later, we had a new battery in the car without pay anything. Kimda & Gautier from live-our-trip.com

Explore Australia's Natural Wonders By Foot

Embark on budget-friendly hiking adventures.

Australia is filled with raw natural beauty, iconic landmarks, and dramatic landscapes. Luckily, backpackers on a tight budget can take in the sights without completely depleting their travel funds by embarking on some of the most beautiful hikes in Australia .

Traverse the breathtaking landscapes of the Blue Mountains and choose from one of the many hiking trails in the national park. In Victoria, hardcore hikers can attempt the multi-day Grampians Peaks Trail. Those looking to take on the entire 164 km trail can expect to pay $262.35 per person, but this price is dependent on two people sharing a tent. Backpackers on a budget will be pleased to know that many sections of the trail can be accomplished for free if they opt for a day hike. While in Victoria, avid hikers will also find Wilsons Promontory National Park. Located in the southernmost tip of mainland Australia, this is another fantastic free park that showcases Australia's diverse ecosystems.

Backpackers looking for laid-back hiking trails in Sydney can admire the beautiful coast during the Bondi to Coogee walk. This picturesque walk is 6 km long, and it goes past a few of Australia's most infamous beaches. Along the way, backpackers can stop for a dip in the sea and enjoy some refreshments at an ocean-front café.

  • How It Helps Travelers Save Money: Australia has a lot of superb national parks, and many are free for visitors on foot
  • Location : Blue Mountains National Park (New South Wales); Grampians National Park (Victoria); Wilsons Promontory National Park (Victoria) Bondi to Coogee Walk (Sydney)

Savvy backpackers on a budget can enhance their Grampians Peaks Trail adventure by strategically integrating Kalymna Falls Campground , Plantation Campground , and Wannon Crossing Campground into their itinerary. No advance booking is required, and these grounds provide cost-free overnight stays. Check the website for any important updates on campsite or road closures.

Embrace Van Life

Live the van life dream and save on transport, accommodation, and food expenses.

Hiring a van could be a cheap option for backpackers who plan to travel to Australia for at least a month. Living out of a van could potentially cut costs on accommodation, transport, and even food. With a small kitchen on board, budget-conscious travelers won't have to rely on expensive restaurant meals.

Backpackers who enjoy being behind the wheel can hire a van from an established rental company, such as Britz, Spaceships Rentals, or Travellers Autobarn. Camplify connects people in need of a rental vehicle with RV owners. As the Airbnb of the rental vehicle world, backpackers can score a small campervan for as little as $20 per day.

On average, travelers can expect to spend around $157 per day in Australia. With campervan hire costing as little as $20, there is the potential to save $137 per day, which is over $4,000 over a 30-day period. Make a reservation outside of high season for the best prices.

  • How It Helps Travelers Save Money: Depending on the season and whether a long hire rental is required, hiring a campervan can be much cheaper than exploring Australia the traditional way.
  • Pick Up And Drop Off Location: Britz - Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Broome, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Spaceships Rentals - Airlie Beach, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne Travellers Autobarn - Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney
  • Cost Per Day For Long Hire Rentals:

Britz – from $70

 Spaceships Rentals – from $65

Travellers Autobarn – from $36

Although van life can certainly be a budget-friendly way to explore Australia, it is important to account for extra costs, such as petrol, campsite fees, and insurance and booking fees for the vehicle itself.

Discover Australia's Underwater World

Snorkel for free at one of australia's many underwater destinations.

While Australia's first underwater hotel might not be out of the frugal traveler's price range, there are still plenty of ways one can enjoy the country's underwater world. Backpackers can dive into Australia's marine wonders on a budget by visiting one of the continent's many amazing underwater destinations with their own snorkel gear. Although snorkel sets can be hired from local equipment rental stores around Australia, it is cheaper for backpackers to buy the gear outright if they plan to snorkel a lot.

Those new to snorkeling can try to spot reef sharks, turtles, and rays in the stunning Turquoise Bay . Clovelly Beach is another fantastic place to marvel at vibrant marine life, while Jervis Bay boasts beautiful white sand beaches and clear, unspoiled waters. Hyams Point , also known as Little Hyams Beach, is home to colorful fish, including the vivid Blue Groper.

  • How It Helps Travelers Save Money: Backpackers with a love for the sea can add a budget-friendly dimension to their trip by using their own equipment to explore the Australian waters

We rented kuga camper for 3 weeks. It was the best journey we could imagine and it is the best way to visit National Parks, you just have your home on wheels and it gives you so much flexibility on your trip. Everything was perfect, camper, equipment and customer service provided from Alfonso was excellent.

We drove over 8,000 miles and were on the road for 28 days in March 2022. We absolutely loved our Kuga van and made memories that will last a lifetime! We were already avid campers probably intermediate at best before our trip but thanks to Travellers Autobarn for the opportunity to rent one of their vehicles!

Russell and Alfonzo were AMAZING!! So helpful and friendly and made our drop off the best experience! They had great recommendations and made the whole process so smooth.

Fantastic! Super friendly team at the LA USA branch made our van rental super easy. The van never skipped a beat and best of all, no mileage restrictions. Highly recommend, will be back! 10/10.

Great value and service. Alfonso is also the best and super helpful. Definitely going to come back again in the future.

We had the van for 5 weeks and travelled across the US. We managed to get everywhere we wanted with our Travellers Autobarn Van. It's super comfy and cozy inside and the small kitchen was perfect to cook dinner along the roads.

We had an amazing trip with the Kuga Van. It was perfect and fit our needs. It was our home for 2 months ? Price was very good and there was no trouble when we brought it back. Thanks to Russel, Alfonso and Sam for the trip ;-)

I couldn't have thought of a better way to do our road trip. Travellers Autobarn made our renting experience so easy and fast. Russell provided great customer service and explained the ins and outs of the van in a simple manner. We will definitely rent from Autobarn again.

Rented a campervan for about 3 months and travelled through 13 states with their Kuga van. Travellers Autobarn is no doubt the best rental company to book a van through. The unlimited miles and the low price can’t be beat. The staff is incredibly helpful and nice. We’ll definitely rent from them in the future again.

I rented a Kuga from them for four weeks, from the minute I arrived, Russel was extremely helpful with all my questions and concerns. I initially had the van for two weeks but extended my trip half way through as I was having such a great time. The van was great! When I dropped it off, they were great and I can't wait
