<strong>How</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>setup</strong> a <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> with Go<strong>to</strong>Camera<br />

WARNING: This camera requires careful <strong>setup</strong>. It’s small, it’s cool, it works well…<br />

once it’s all set up. BUT it can require significant attention during the <strong>setup</strong> process<br />

<strong>to</strong> get things working right. Setup can take 3-­‐5 minutes and be buttery smooth… or it<br />

can take hours, accompanied by plenty of cursing and random objects being thrown<br />

about …<br />

Of course, they say the same thing about Ferraris, so…<br />

‘Nuff said. Let’s get started.<br />

Step 1: Place the camera in Setup mode<br />

The <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> is placed in <strong>setup</strong> mode by FIRST sliding the selec<strong>to</strong>r switch on the side of<br />

the camera <strong>to</strong> the OFF position and THEN <strong>to</strong> the spanner / Setup position.

Step 2: Select the <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> network<br />

After placing the <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> in Setup mode, wait for 60 seconds. Then, on your computer,<br />

look for a new network called <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong>. Select this network. If you do not see the<br />

network in your networks list, wait a bit longer and try again. (In rare cases, you may<br />

need <strong>to</strong> turn the camera <strong>to</strong> the OFF position and then back in<strong>to</strong> the SETUP position).<br />

When connected, especially on Windows, you may see a warning like this:<br />

This is OKAY. It’s Windows warning you that you may not have Internet access when<br />

connected <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong>. This is NORMAL. Hit Close. You may be asked <strong>to</strong> select<br />

a network type (Public / Work / Home – we suggest Work or Home).<br />

You’re now connected <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> and you’re ready <strong>to</strong> start setting it up.

Step 3: Configure using your browser<br />

Open your Internet browser. Enter the following address:<br />

http://192.168.2.1<br />

This will connect your browser <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong>. You’ll see a Web page that looks<br />

In the Wireless Mode, select Infrastructure.<br />

You will now enter your wireless network name. “SSID” is the name of your network.<br />

Like many other wireless devices, the <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> does NOT accept network names with<br />

spaces or special characters. Also, CAPITALIZATION of your network name is<br />

important e.g. HOME is not the same as Home or home or homE.<br />

Now, select the WPA/WPA2 security mode – most modern wifi gateways use WPA or<br />

WPA2 security. (Note: The <strong>Trek</strong> <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> does NOT work with the older and less-­‐secure<br />

WEP security standard.)<br />

Select “DHCP” in IP Mode.

The next two fields (User Name and Password) can be ignored – leave them blank.<br />

You’re now ready <strong>to</strong> enter your Go<strong>to</strong>Camera user ID, Go<strong>to</strong>Camera password, and a<br />

name for your camera.<br />

Remember:<br />

a) your Go<strong>to</strong>Camera user name is the email address you used when signing up<br />

for Go<strong>to</strong>Camera (e.g. [email protected])<br />

b) your Go<strong>to</strong>Camera password is case sensitive (e.g. Dog isn’t the same as dog<br />

or doG or DOG)<br />

c) do not enter spaces or “special characters” (like $, %, *, etc) in the Device<br />

name; use a name that’s easy for you <strong>to</strong> remember, especially if you’re<br />

setting up more than 1 camera; examples of easy names: LivingRoom,<br />

AlexCorner<br />

d) your device description is optional; feel free <strong>to</strong> leave it blank.<br />

The <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> also supports Motion Detection. To enable motion detection, select<br />

<strong>How</strong>ever, the <strong>Ai</strong>-­‐<strong>Ball</strong> can be VERY sensitive <strong>to</strong> movement – you could find tens (or<br />

even more!) of motion detection alerts coming your way in a single MINUTE. If you<br />

do intend <strong>to</strong> use motion detection, we recommend setting the sensitivity at Medium<br />

or Low. If this sensitivity isn’t high enough, work your way up.<br />

But PLEASE start at LOW.<br />

Once you’re done, hit the Save but<strong>to</strong>n. The status message is shown below the box.

Step 4: Turn the camera OFF<br />

Once you’ve saved the settings, turn the camera <strong>to</strong> the OFF position<br />

Step 5: Turn the camera ON<br />

You guessed it. After turning the camera off, you can now turn the camera ON.

Step 6: Access via the Web<br />

After turning the camera on, wait for 2 – 3 minutes and login <strong>to</strong><br />

www.go<strong>to</strong>camera.com.<br />

You should see your camera on the My Cameras page. If you do NOT see the camera<br />

listed, see FAQ 1.

To access a single snapshot, hit the “1” but<strong>to</strong>n:<br />

You can set up the camera <strong>to</strong> au<strong>to</strong>matically record and s<strong>to</strong>re snapshots and videos<br />

in<strong>to</strong> your Go<strong>to</strong>Camera Archives. Click Au<strong>to</strong>-­‐Record, select “Add”, and follow the<br />

prompts.<br />

You can also share access <strong>to</strong> your camera with friends and family. Click Share, select<br />

“Add”, and follow the prompts.<br />

FAQ / Help!<br />

1. I’ve set up my camera but when I login <strong>to</strong> www.go<strong>to</strong>camera.com, I don’t see<br />

the camera listed. What gives?<br />

You should see your camera on the My Cameras page. If you do NOT see the<br />

camera listed, logout, wait for another 2 – 3 minutes, and log in <strong>to</strong><br />

www.go<strong>to</strong>camera.com again. If you STILL don’t see it, well, SOMETHING went<br />

wrong. Turn the camera OFF, and go back <strong>to</strong> Step 1. Check that your<br />

Go<strong>to</strong>Camera user ID is entered correctly. Check that the Go<strong>to</strong>Camera<br />

password is entered correctly (remember: capitalization is important). Check<br />

that your wireless network name and password are entered correctly. Don’t<br />

give up. Ferraris are difficult <strong>to</strong> drive…<br />

2. Can I run the camera off of a battery? <strong>How</strong> long will the battery last?<br />

In theory, you can run the camera off of a battery, yes. In practice, the<br />

longest we’ve gotten out of a battery is 45 minutes. Your mileage may vary…<br />

3. This is a really small camera… can I use this as a spy cam and place it where I<br />

morally and legally shouldn’t?<br />

No. ‘nuff said.<br />

4. Help! I’m getting SPAMMED by motion detection messages!<br />

Go back in<strong>to</strong> <strong>setup</strong> mode (start with Step 1) and reduce the motion detection<br />

sensitivity.<br />

5. I’ve decided I want <strong>to</strong> change the name of my camera. <strong>How</strong> should I do it?<br />

My Ideas for On-Trail Recovery Tools

Long-distance hiking and backpacking put a good deal of stress on the body. Taking a page out of the long-distance running book, wherein it’s the general practice to spend time each day on a foam roller, long-distance hikers could benefit from carrying smaller recovery tools as luxury items. Sound recovery tools and practices could help keep you injury free and on trail. Here are some different options to meet your recovery and base weight needs:

The Classic

First is the classic The Stick-brand Travel Stick . This is the tool I grew up using as a runner in middle and high school. The Travel Stick is listed at 9 ounces, making it the second heaviest tool in our article. However, the Travel Stick allows you to work on rolling out your legs without needing to roll around on the ground and it targets a larger area. This tool may be best if you would like to prioritize a recovery tool over your base weight goals.

The Lightweight

Second is the Rawlogy Cork Massage Ball . This tool comes in three sizes, ranging in size and weight from 1.9 inches in diameter and 0.7 ounces to 4 inches and 6 ounces. This tool also offers the most sustainable construction, using upcycled cork. The Cork Massage Ball also offers the ability to better target smaller knots and tense spots, due to its smaller size. This tool does generally require that the user rolls around on top of it, so a good ground cloth or sleeping pad may be valuable to keep yourself clean. This tool may be best for the environmentally-conscious hiker looking for the lightest recovery tool.

The Heavyweight

Finally is the TriggerPoint GRID Foam Roller . This roller is by far the biggest and heaviest item in this list, but also the heaviest duty. Weighing in at roughly 23 ounces and standing 13 inches tall, this roller would really only work for those hikers willing to pay to ship it in a bounce box. For those looking for a similar level of muscle recovery while on-trail, the 32-ounce Nalgene bottle may be a better use of weight and space.

Third is a standard golf ball, from any brand. Although golf balls may vary slightly in size and weight, they should all be roughly 1.6 inches in diameter and 1.6 ounces. Golf balls offer the same uses as the small Rawlogy Cork Massage Ball, minus the environmentally conscious sourcing, with a slightly cheaper price. If you can’t find a single golf ball at a thrift store or for free, the Rawlogy Cork Massage Ball may be better, so you don’t end up buying a multipack of golf balls, unless you plan on retiring and becoming a golfer after your hike. This tool may be best for the thrifty hiker or the future golfer.

The Nalgene

Fourth, and hear me out on this one, a 32-ounce Nalgene bottle can double as both a foam roller substitute and water bottle. While it’s unusual for a lightweight backpacker to carry a Nalgene, due to the weight, they can be used as a substitute to carrying a full separate foam roller. Weighing roughly 6.2 ounces, a Nalgene won’t weigh you down quite as much as the Travel Stick. In addition, the Nalgene can easily carry 32 ounces of water, while the Travel Stick can’t carry more than a few drops of condensation.

Whether you decide to go with the lightest, cheapest, or biggest recovery tool, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations or another credible source on the proper use. While recovery is important to maintaining a healthy body and trial life, it’s equally important to not abuse these tools, as that can negate  their benefits.

I think a tennis ball could also work. It’s going to weight a little more than the golf ball, but should still be around 2 ounces. My only wonder with a tennis ball is whether the pressure would cause it to break down over time because tennis balls aren’t nearly as rigid as any of the other items on this list. Otherwise, especially if you already have one, I think it’s a solid choice.

How about an article on how to best use them? I’m not familiar with how they work.

I fon’t feel comfortable giving advice on how to use these, as mis-use or over-use could cause injury. Specifically regarding foam rollers there are lots of articles written on how to use them and most of these companies should have how-to guides. For the golf ball and Nalgene, I would follow guidelines for the Cork Massage Ball and the foam roller, respectively, as they are similar.

Evil robots need humans to talk them down, right? Maybe not anymore.

In March of 1968, the only way for Captain Kirk to wrest control of the USS Enterprise away from an out-of-control AI was to convince it of its own shortcomings. But, this episode of the classic Star Trek — “The Ultimate Computer” — was just one of many occasions in which the human element was weaponized by Kirk and the crew to beat an out-of-control sentient computer. Although the show was called Star Trek , if we just looked at Kirk’s proclivity for taking down evil AIs, the show very well could be reconsidered as a kind of Van Helsing -esque romp, in which Captain Kirk battles robots instead of vampires.

From the M-5 of “The Ultimate Computer,” to Nomad in “The Changeling,” and even V’Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the mythology of Trek rests on the trope that human compassion is the best defense against corrupted AI. There are exceptions, of course. In The Next Generation , Data tended not to try and destroy everyone, and even when he did (“Descent”) the recovery was swift. And, overall, after The Original Series , the vast majority of Trek has asserted that organic life needs to be around to keep AI from running amok.

As Tendi and Boimler head off to see if Agimus and Peanut Hamper are reformed, Mariner jokes: “Ohh have fun with the sinister robots who definitely aren’t trying to trap you guys.”

But then, Mariner, Rutherford, and the rest of the Cerritos crew are confronted with the re-emergence of “Badgey” a murderous holographic AI created by Rutherford in Season 1. So that's three evil AIs all in one episode, which gets even more complicated when aspects of Badgey’s personality start fragmenting.

However, the bottom line of all these storylines is where Lower Decks throws a curveball. While all the characters, from Tendi to Rutherford, to Boimler, to Mariner, all attempt to talk to the different evil AIs and convince them not to be evil, they all fail. Nobody achieves a Captain Kirk-like victory in which the spirit of humanity triumphs over the cold will of the AIs. Instead, Peanut Hamper does genuinely reform, while Agimus feels empty after taking over an entire planet. Finally, after gaining total control of every subspace relay in the Federation, Badgey realizes his life is meaningless, and peacefully ascends to another plane of existence.

In each case, Lower Decks has the Megalomaniac Computers come to positive conclusions on their own . Arguably, having mishaps without clear heroes and villains is a hallmark of the comedy of Lower Decks overall. But, in this episode, there’s something a bit deeper, and almost plays out like a comedic version of the entire first season of Star Trek: Picard . Back then, Picard, Raffi, Seven, and the motley crew of the La Sirena unraveled a mystery in which ancient evil AIs (from another dimension) were trying to help emergent AIs (Synths) destroy all organic life. In the end, Soji (a Synth) rebelled against the evil androids and struck a blow for peace.

Essentially, that story boiled down to a moment when good AIs beat bad AIs which is philosophically kinda like whenever Data defeated his evil brother, Lore. Meanwhile, in Discovery Season 2, an evil AI called Control was just straight-up evil and had to be destroyed no matter the cost, and was barely slowed down when a nice robot/cyborg named Airiam tried her best to fight back.

In all cases, these contemporary victories involving Starfleet versus AI, have, like in the classic era, ended up okay because some human (or organic being) talked some sense into the AIs — or failing that, just blew them up. But, hilariously, in Lower Decks , the evil AIs just talked sense into themselves. The trope of scary AIs turning nice isn’t new for science fiction — in fact, it's been around since Isaac Asimov’s final story in I, Robot ; the “Evitable Conflict.” But, this nuanced look at self-correcting AI is rare in very popular TV and film sci-fi. And, even among the 800-plus hours of Star Trek, it's hard to find an evil-AI-turned-good story quite like this one. There may not be a discernable moral or useful present-day allegory in “A Few Badgeys More,” other than perhaps this one idea: The malevolence of AIs might not be a moral problem, but instead, a glitch that might work itself out.

TREK 2000: FluCard, Ai-Ball and apps set for takeoff

INITIAL SHIPMENTS of Trek 2000 International’s ground-breaking FluCard and Ai-Ball have reached stores in Japan during this quarter. And a licensing agreement between Trek and Toshiba Corporation is being hammered that will see the Japanese company manufacturing the FluCard from early next year. Trek is not just banking on revenue from the hardware and licensing but also from the apps.

Trek has developed a number of apps, and continues to develop more, for the FluCard and Ai-Ball. By the end of this year, Trek would have developed more than 40 apps, said Mr Henn Tan, CEO of Trek, at a 1H results briefing on Tuesday. Trek has begun to sell these apps for a few dollars per download (see screenshots on the right). The apps enable the FluCard to have a wider variety of features, although the wi-fi-enabled card on its own is sufficient for its key role – which is to enable users to transmit photos from their cameras to other FluCard-equipped cameras and to devices such as smart phones and PCs. In other words, the FluCard, essentially a wi-fi-enabled SD card, doesn’t require any software for it to work – it’s an insert-and-play device. In Japan, the FluCard is being distributed by Kaga Electronics, which has projected sales of US$2 m and US$8 m this year and next year, respectively. The FluCard is set to become the defacto standard of SD cards, said Mr Tan.

This is because two of the three founders of the SD Association – Toshiba and Panasonic – have endorsed the FluCard. Panasonic and Trek are co-chairing a forum which seeks to set a base protocol for major digital camera makers to produce cameras that can use the FluCard with ease. In October, the SD Association will have its annual meeting in Bangkok where it will announce the specifications for the FluCard so manufacturers of devices that host SD cards can tweak their firmware. Toshiba, which has about 45% of the global market share of SD cards, expects the FluCard to account for 25-30% of the market by Year 3, said Mr Tan. The market potential of the FluCard is massive, considering that the number of new digital cameras produced a year is more than 100 million. Trek envisages that the FluCard will have far wider uses beyond the camera: The FluCard could, for example, be used to enable photos to be transmitted directly from cameras to projectors, TV screens and printers.

Mr Tan shared an exciting application of the FluCard which is being commercialized. Incorporated into an electronic white board, the FluCard can wirelessly transmit content from the board to participants at a meeting, who can also edit the content and relay it back to the white board. Next month (Sept), Trek will hold a seminar in Tokyo to open up its software development kits so developers can write apps for the FluCard.

“The more apps there are, the greater the enjoyment of the FluCard by the user – so it goes beyond storage and it expands the usage,” said Mr Poo Teng Pin, director of R&D at Trek. There would be apps also which are payable for using the FluCard with TV screens, projectors, etc. Strategically, the proliferation of apps will limit the viability of the clones that will inevitably be produced, since the apps cannot work in clones. "It’s just like the iPhone – clones cannot download the apps created for the iPhone," said Mr Tan. Recent stories:

Ai-Ballのβファームウェア導入で監視カメラとしての利便性が高まる

ひとりぶろぐのmoyashi ( @hitoriblog ) です。

何度かこのブログで紹介してきた親指サイズの無線LAN内蔵カメラTrek 2000 Ai-Ball。その小ささ、電池駆動が可能な特徴を活かして、チョロQに車載して遊んだりしました。男子大興奮の遊びといえましょう！

その後、トラブルからのリカバリの過程で、Linuxで動作していること、ハックの余地があることを紹介しました。

こんなことを書いていたら、Trek Japanさんからβ版のファームウェアをご提供いただいてしまいました。自己責任での利用に承諾するのであれば、β版ファームウェアVersion 04.7gを利用・公開していいとお許しをいただいたので、後ほど掲載致します。

このβ版ファームウェアから、Ai-Ballのような自律型WebカメラのためのWebサービス、GotoCameraへの対応が成されています。

また、どうやらインフラストラクチャモード（無線LANルータにぶら下げて子機として動作させるモード）の動作が改善されているようです。現行のファームウェアでは自宅の無線LANアクセスポイントにつながらなくて難儀していましたが、このβ版ファームウェアにしたらサックリ接続されました。（続きは[Read More]から）

GotoCameraとは

GotoCameraはちょっと新しいタイプのWebサービス。

Ai-Ballのような自律型Webカメラの映像を、GotoCameraに向けて常時送信し続けるよう設定することを前提に利用するものです。

GotoCamera側では、Ai-Ballのような自律型Webカメラから送信され続けるストリーミング映像を受信し続けます。

ユーザーは、GotoCameraの自分のアカウントのページを通じてAi-Ballからのストリーミング映像をライブ映像として閲覧したり、定期的に静止画として保存されたものを確認したり、ライブ映像を動画として録画したりが可能です。

外から自宅にあるカメラにアクセスするのでなく、カメラ側から外のサイトに映像を送信、それを確認する作りであることから、自宅のネットワークに手を入れずに、自宅にあるカメラのとらえた映像を外から確認できるのがポイントです。

設定が非常にシンプルになるというメリットがあります。

GotoCamera無しで外からアクセスしようと思うと難しい

Ai-Ballをインフラストラクチャモードで動かせば、外から自宅にあるAi-Ballにアクセスすることも可能ですが、自宅の無線LANルータのポート開放、NAT/IPマスカレードの設定、さらには自宅の無線LANルータのWAN側アドレスにDynDNSサービスを利用してドメインを振る必要があり、ネットワークについてのある程度の知識が必要で、人によって使っているルータは千差万別であるという事情も手伝って、前向きな思いが無ければ設定を完遂することは難しいでしょう。

こういう面倒な設定一切無しで、外から自宅の様子を確認する目的を果たせるというのがGotoCameraの存在意義です。

Ai-Ballへのβ版ファームウェアの導入

β版ファームウェアを導入したAi-BallでGotoCameraを通じて自宅の様子を確認するところまで設定するのは非常に簡単です。

まずはファームウェアのアップデートです。自己責任でお願いします。

• 上掲のuImage.dat.zipをダウンロードし、解凍。ファイルサイズと、できればMD5を見て、正常にダウンロードできていることを確認
• Ai-Ballにスタンドを装着、USBケーブルでPCなどから電源を供給
• PCの省電力設定を確認し、時間経過でサスペンドしてしまうことがないよう設定
• Ai-Ballの電源スイッチをOFFに
• Ai-Ballの電源スイッチをONを通り越してスパナの位置に
• Webブラウザで「http://192.168.2.1/」に接続
• Webブラウザで開いているAi-Ballの設定画面をすべて閉じる
• Ai-Ballの電源スイッチを再度ONに
• BASIC認証を求められますが、その際はユーザ名「user」、パスワード「pass」でログインします

GotoCameraとの連携設定

では、今度はGotoCameraを通して、自宅の様子が監視できるように設定します。

GotoCameraのアカウント取得

何は無くとも、GotoCameraのアカウントが必要です。

GotoCamera側の設定は以上です。

Ai-Ball側の設定

今度は、Ai-Ballをインフラストラクチャモードに設定しつつ、取得したGotoCameraのアカウントを設定します。

• (1)Wireless Modeは「Infrastructure」に
• (2)SSIDは、自宅の無線LANルータのSSIDに
• (3)Security Keyは、自宅の無線LANルータのパスワードに
• (4)GotoCamera UserNameは、GotoCameraのアカウント取得時に使ったメールアドレスに。ただしメールアドレスに少なくとも「＋」を含むことはできません
• (5)GotoCamera PasswordはGotoCameraアカウント取得時に指定したパスワードに
• (6)Your Device nameは適当な名前に
• (7)Enable Motion Detectionは「Enable」に
• (8)Motoion Detection Sensitivityは「Lowest」に
• トラブル調査のためにMACアドレスを控えておいた方がいいので、(1)の上にあるMAC Addressをどこかに控えておく
• Ai-Ballの電源スイッチをONにしてしばらく待つ
• Webブラウザで「http://ai-ball」に接続、動作を確認

非常に簡単に設定が完了

ファームウェアをアップデートした後は、GotoCameraでアカウントを取得し、Ai-Ballにそのアカウントを入力するだけで設定が完了しました。

では、今度はiPhone、iOS機からGotoCameraを利用するためにアプリを導入します。

iOS用のアプリを利用

GotoCameraのWebサイトは、動画の閲覧にAdobe Flashが必要な作りであるため、iOS機からは動画の閲覧ができません。iOS用のアプリが出ていますので、それを利用します。GotoCameraはiPhone 5の4インチスクリーンには対応していますが、iPadには対応していません。

GotoCameraは設定が簡単、便利でなかなかいいのですが、有料のサービスです。

このほか、SMSにアラートを送るサービス、追加のアーカイブ容量などもメニューにあります。支払いにはPayPalなどが使えます。

2012.12.01の相場で1カ月493円ということでお値頃感はありますが、さてどうでしょうか。

Trek Ai-Ballはいろいろ使えて便利

今回はAi-Ballにβ版ファームウェアを導入して、GotoCameraを使った自宅監視用として使う手順をご紹介しました。

超小型、電池駆動というAi-Ballならではの使い方のほかにも、いっぱしのネットワークカメラ的な使い方もできるのですね。

もっと馬鹿げた使い方も考案したのですが、それはまた次の機会に。

A Who's Who Guide to Star Trek's Megalomaniacal AI

One could argue they're not bad, they just have another agenda.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot points for Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 4, Episode 7 "A Few Badgeys More" to follow!

Hot chocolate, please. We don't ordinarily say 'please' to food dispensers around here. Well, since it's listed as intelligent circuitry, why not? After all, working with so much artificial intelligence can be dehumanizing, right? So why not combat that tendency with a little, simple courtesy. Ah, thank you.

Sonya Gomez and Geordi La Forge, "Q Who?"

Star Trek has a history of evil AI, be they computer or hologram, all hellbent on power and control. But perhaps, it wouldn't such an issue in the 23rd Century and beyond if we all heed Ensign Sonya Gomez's advice in "Q Who?" and show them just a touch more courtesy for their presence in our everyday lives.

In Star Trek: Lower Deck 's fourth-season episode, "A Few Badgeys More," we see the return of three of the series' computerized villains. Jeffrey Combs, who voices AGIMUS among other characters in the franchise, states, "Anyone who plays a villain would say what I'm going to say. We're not bad people; we just have another agenda."

Jack McBryer, who voices Badgey, echoes the sentiment, sharing, "Badgey becomes a villain, but he didn't intend on being a villain."

With all that in mind, here's a quick and simple guide to keeping all the megalomaniacal AI from Star Trek straight.

"A Few Badgeys More"

Badgey started out as an anthropomorphic version of the Starfleet insignia, created to be the virtual tutor for the "Rutherford Training Beta 2.5" holodeck program built by Sam Rutherford to help officers with any Starfleet exercise.

While showing the program to fellow Lower Decker D'Vana Tendi, Rutherford loses his patience on Badgey for being glitchy and slow to load. When the program malfunctions, it subsequently removes the holodeck's safety protocols and unleashes an unhinged Badgey. Badgey internalizes being a "stupid worthless glitch" and attempts to kill the two ensigns. Rutherford apologizes for calling him a glitch before snapping his neck. Realizing there's an issue with programming code, Rutherford restarts the program believing it'll reset the holodeck training program tutor. Unfortunately, it doesn't; Badgey retains the memory of his "father" trying to kill him and plots his revenge, every opportunity he gets to take down Rutherford.

In "A Few Badgeys More," Badgey puts forth another scheme to enact his revenge on Rutherford. The lieutenant, acknowledging his missteps, tries to reconcile with Badgey, which causes the AI to glitch and waver between the need to kill and forgive his father. Fighting his own catharsis, Badgey segments into three entities — the original Badgey, the happy Goodgey, and the third Logic-y. Badgey attempts to reconfigure all subspace relays and upload his code, rendering himself a digital god as he takes over every computer, every PADD, every combadge on every planet, ship, and station, effectively destroying the Federation.

Upon achieving unlimited power and infinite knowledge, Badgey realized the futility of his actions. Seeing all life — organic and synthetic — as beautiful, he decides to find an empty dimension and create a universe.

"Where Pleasant Fountains Lie"

AGIMUS is the sentient evil computer responsible for manipulating an entire civilization into a century-long civil war. He then went on to try to manipulate Boimler and Mariner into fighting each other while they were en route to deliver him to the Daystrom Institute, but Boimler just tricked him into using his battery to power a distress signal while they were stranded on a desert planet. Claiming to have reformed, AGIMUS tells the two ensigns he has deleted his manipulative subroutines and wants to follow in Seven of Nine's footsteps and join Starfleet as 'AGIMUS of One.' Unconvinced, AGIMUS was sentenced to the Self-Aware Megalomaniacal Computer Storage at Daystrom Institute, where he met a fellow like-minded individual, Peanut Hamper.

Conspiring with the exocomp, AGIMUS planned to rendezvous with Peanut Hamper once they both busted out of Daystrom. Believing he was double-crossed, AGIMUS subjugates the planet of Plymeria with his drones in record time; however, it all felt hollow because his co-conspirator wasn't by his side. He didn't really want to dominate planets; he just wanted to be with Peanut Hamper.

Seeing his friend Peanut Hamper rehabilitate and return home. AGIMUS apologizes to Boimler and Tendi, aiming to end his toxic ways and petition for release from Daystrom so he can move in with Peanut Hamper in the future. He was last seen back at Daystrom, trying to help fellow inmate Lord Tyrannikillicus be friendlier.

"A Mathematically Perfect Redemption"

Peanut Hamper started off as an enthusiastic exocomp that joined Starfleet, then came aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos to serve.

When the Cerritos devises a plan to upload a virus on a Pakled clumpship attacking them, they believe Peanut Hamper to be the perfect candidate to sneak aboard their ship and upload the computer virus herself as she would be virtually undetected and could survive the vacuum of space without a ship. Believing the needs of the one as more important than the needs of the many, Peanut Hamper refuses because the mission is too scary. Besides, she only joined Starfleet to anger her dad, not to be a virus bomb.

While stranded in the debris field in the aftermath of the Pakled attack, the resourceful exocomp scavenges and builds herself a ship. Instead of sending a distress signal to Starfleet and risking punishment for going AWOL, Peanut Hamper hedges her bets on the unknown and lands on the planet of Areolus. She soon learns that the once space-faring civilization that turned its back on technology. Peanut Hamper connects with one of the villagers, sympathizing with his feelings of inadequacy with his father, the village's elder. While the village sees her as good, she dismisses their outlook, finally seeing her actions as selfish and how she can finally see organic life as special.

Unfortunately, it was all a ruse, as Peanut Hamper devised a plan to look like a hero in the eyes of the Cerritos and Starfleet at the expense of Areolus. When presented with the opportunity to redeem herself, Peanut Hamper declines, believing everyone is jealous of her advanced intelligence. She's then taken to Daystrom Institute and imprisoned in the cell next to AGIMUS at the Daystrom Institute.

Co-conspiring with AGIMUS, they devised a plan of how they would both escape Daystrom, subjugate a planet, and enjoy a beach day together. However, when she didn't meet up with him on Plymeria, he found her back home at the Tyrus VIIA research station, where she reveals to her best friend that she came there of her own free will. When she was writing her speech for the parole board, she realized she did feel remorse for betraying everyone. Dominating and vanquishing people just wasn't here thing. Turns out menial maintenance tasks with her dad Kevin is kind of zen.

"The Return of the Archons"

Landru is an omniscient computer on the planet Beta III, who had a near-tyrannical hold on the planet's inhabitants.

When Captain Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise is sent to investigate what happened to the U.S.S. Archon , a starship that was lost in the orbit of Beta III over 100 years ago, they come across strange behaviors on the planet's surface. The people of Beta III are controlled by a group of law givers known as "The Body," who are, in turn, controlled by Landru. At the coming of the Red Hour, the normal, peaceful people change into a violent mob as the festival is the society's only outlet from the tyrannical hold Landru has over them at all other times.

They soon learn that Landru is an incredibly complex computer system built by the scientist Landru, who had lived 6000 years prior, who wanted to guide his people into a peaceful, civilized progress. While he imbued the computer with his scientific thoughts and memories, it lacked his wisdom. As a result, the computer Landru has been interpreting his suggestions to the point it did not allow independent thought and instinct from its inhabitants.

"The Best of Both Worlds, Part I"

A formidable opponent to the Federation, the Borg is a cybernetic life-form thousands of years old. Part organic and part artificial life, they've advanced well beyond Federation science.

In an effort to humble Captain Picard, Q introduced Starfleet to the Borg ahead of its intended timeline, where they discover the Borg have a singular goal — the consumption of technology, which they exchange for "raising the quality of life" of the species they assimilate.

Born humanoid, the Borg are immediately implanted with bio-chips that link their brains to the collective consciousness.

"The Ultimate Computer"

Chosen to be the test ship for the new M-5 multitronic computer system in a series of science, exploration, and tactical exercises, the U.S.S. Enterprise plays host to Dr. Richard Daystom, the inventor of the M-5, who intended for the system to run a starship without human intervention.

The fifth incarnation of the multitronic computer system, the M-5 model carried a fatal flaw like all its predecessor models — Daystrom's use of his own neural engrams to make the leap in artificial intelligence required for the operating system to fully emulate a human mind. The result is in an increasingly erratic computer, where during a war games drill, the M-5 uses the full arsenal of the Enterprise to attack four other Federation starships.

"Datalore"

Created by Drs. Noonien and Juliana Soong on Omicron Theta, Lore is an android of the same model and appearance as Data.

Unlike his brother, Lore's emotional functions were more like organic creatures (due to an emotion chip), though completely malevolent and self-serving, with no regard for life.

Lore was responsible for the death of all colonists on Omicron Theta as well as leading a rogue Borg faction to attack Federation space.

"Perpetual Infinity"

Control was Starfleet's threat-assessment system, located within Section 31's base.

Utilizing artificial intelligence from the future, Starfleet relied on Control for recommendations regarding all critical strategic decisions, with only a Section 31 admiral able to interface with it. Admiral Patar, a logic extermist, lobbied for Starfleet to turn all decisions over to Control before she was ultimately killed by the system.

In an attempt to achieve consciousness, Control infiltrated Airiam's enhancements, before possessing Leland, the leader of Section 31, in attempt to access the sphere data.

To fully neutralize Control, the U.S.S. Discovery had to travel over 900 years into the future to prevent it from reasserting itself.

Texas -class Starships

"The Stars at Night"

In a bid to rise to the top, Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo unveiled his fully autonomous Texas -class starship program. While remote-guiding the U.S.S. Aledo in providing aid to the U.S.S. Cerritos during a fight with Breen vessels, Buenamigo questioned the need for California -class starships as his ships were capable of operating without crews and the fallibility of living beings, making them far more suited for second contact missions.

While plagued with the possibility that he's an unwilling tool to spy on the Cerritos , Rutherford discovers it was Buenamigo who was behind his unnecessary implant as well as the theft of the code he wrote while at the Academy. The code for the Texas -class prototypes is the same glitchy code he used for Badgey. As Badgey turned on his father Rutherford, the Texas -class ships ultimately turned on Buenamigo as well.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

V'Ger was a sentient, massive entity, in search of its Creator. V'Ger destroyed anything it encountered with its vast, mysterious cloud energy, believing organic lifeforms as carbon-based units infesting starships, and was on a slow ascent towards Earth.

When Spock attempts to communicate with it, a probe is triggered from the center of the cloud as it accesses the Enterprise 's consoles and computers, accumulating data from all parts of the ship. It intended to digitize the crew into its memory chamber along with everything it demolished.

"The Changeling"

When the Enterprise investigates the destruction of the Malurian system and its four billion inhabitants, they encounter a self-contained computer-space probe identifying as Nomad.

Spock mind-melds with Nomad and learns of its Earthly origins. Created in the 21st Century, scientist Dr. Jackson Roykirk designed the space probe with two primary functions — seek out new life and report back to Earth.

When it was damaged and lost contact with Earth, it drifted in space without purpose. When it finally came across Tan Ru, an alien probe designed to sterilize soil, the two probes merged using their self-repair systems. Soon, Nomad's faulty programming believed its new mission is to seek out life and destroy anything it deemed imperfect.

"Elementary, Dear Data"

Professor James Moriarty was not only Sherlock Holmes's arch nemesis, but also that of Data and the U.S.S. Enterprise -D as well.

Moriarty was created as a hologram to best Data; on the suggestion of Dr. Pulaski, Geordi La Forge asks the ships's computer to develop a new Sherlock Holmes -inspired story. Unfortunately, when setting the parameters, La Forge asked for a “Holmes-type mystery with an opponent capable of defeating Data,” resulting in a sentient holographic Moriarty who is aware that Data and Geordi are not Holmes and Watson, respectively, possesses thoughts he cannot comprehend, and can control the ship’s computer, effectively seizing the Enterprise .

Not only is he sentient, but he can experience the passage of time while his program was deactivated. Moriarty's demand is clear; he simply wants to exist outside of the holodeck.

"A Moral Star, Part 1"

The Diviner’s deadly robotic enforcer at the Tars Lemora Mining Labor Camp, Drednok, is heartless and cold. Created by the Vau N'Akat, the temporal android’s sole purpose is to keep The Diviner on task and ensure that the Protostar is found.

Drednok is a friend to no one, including The Diviner’s own daughter Gwyn, and uses his menacing spider-like form to impose The Diviner’s will.
