With Pre-Order , you can purchase the latest items added to our store in advance of them arriving with us.

Your Pre-Order is prioritised (at no additional charge); meaning that as soon as the product arrives with us, we can wrap it straight back up; ready for collection via Click & Collect or despatch to you — it often never even hits the stock room shelves!

With Pre-Launch , the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The refund will be issued within 3 - 5 working days of the product being received by us, it may then take an additional 3 - 5 working days for the refund to be paid into the customers account.

For items returned within the cooling off period...

  • By law, customers have the right to withdraw from the purchase of an item within 14 working days of the date on which the item is delivered.

The Verve 3’s benefits from the smooth and efficient gearing provided by Shimano’s Acera components. Both the front and back derailleurs are Acera as well as the shifters. Trek has downgraded the front crank to a 2-speed ring but put a 9-speed Shimano HG200 cassette on the rear, with 11-36 cogs. This gives the rider 18 gears overall with the added range provided by the extra-large 36t rear cog.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Trek Verve 3 hydraulic Disc brake rotors

Trek has also decided to go with Shimano in the braking department this time around. Shimano’s MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are a firm favorite amongst hybrid and MTB riders alike. They provide great grip, instant reaction time, and no slippage even in wet weather.

Bontrager Hardcase Wheels

Verve 3 Disc Lowstep bluelight

Bontrager’s Hardcase Ultimate tires are the real deal when it comes to tackling hazardous city streets. These things will carve through rubble or broken rocks without trouble and should even keep you safe against glass shards or small nails. The 700c x 45 wire-beaded tires also have reflective sidewalls for safer night riding.

Alpha Gold Aluminum Frame

The Alpha Gold aluminum frame is compatible with Trek’s DuoTrap S sensor system for tracking your progress. It also has a front and rear rack and fender mounts if you wish to convert the Verve 3 into a decent touring bicycle. With the strong frame and alloy fork, the Verve 3 can carry up to 300 lbs (136 kg) of overall weight (rider and luggage).

DuoTrap S Compatible

Verve 3 Disc Lowstep duotrap bluetooth device

DuoTrap S is Trek’s unique frame-integrated wireless computer system that tracks your statistics while you cycle. It can be installed neatly into the frame on the inside of the rear wheel for a clean and aerodynamic finish. The DuoTrap S device (sold separately) tracks your cycling statistics and sends the information wirelessly to a Bluetooth or ANT+ enabled cycling computer or smartphone.

Trek Verve 1 Disc

trek verve 1

MSRP $530 Best Features : Mechanical disc brakes, Bontrager Tires, DuoTrap S compatible (Not included)

Verve 1 is an excellent introductory hybrid bike at an attractive price . Its comfortable geometry is perfect for first-timers or casual recreational riders. It’s built from tough, reliable components that are simple to clean and repair, making maintenance an easy task for new riders. It doesn’t have the suspension required for heavy off-road riding but it does have extra-large tires to absorb the shock of small rocks and bumpy roads. This makes it a decent bike for riding on dirt tracks in parks or along country lanes.

  • Men’s Trek Verve 1 Disc comes in two colors: Factory Orange  and Trek Black , and four sizes: S, M, L, XL.
  • Women’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes in four sizes: XS, S, M, L and in two colors: Era White , and Dnister Black

Main Features

Aluminum frame and steel fork.

Verve 1 Disc grey

The strong Alpha Gold aluminum frame is built to carry weight and take abuse so it won’t break on you anytime soon. Attach a rack to the rear so you can carry groceries or go on short weekend camping trips in the countryside. This is complemented by a steel front fork with rack and fender mounts.

Mechanical disc brakes

Disc brakes provide much-improved stopping power in wet weather so you won’t have to worry about cycling in the rain. These Tektro MD-M280 mechanical disc brakes are highly rated and quality tested.

Shimano Gearing

Trek Verve 1 Disc brakes with shimano gearing

The Verve 1 has good value Shimano Altus and Tourney derailleurs making up its 21-speed drivetrain, with a SunRace 14-34t freewheel cassette. The combination offers a wide range of gears so you can tackle any hills without trouble.

Extra-large tires

Bontrager supplies the extra-large 700x45c tires on the Verve 1 so you can comfortably attack even the most cobbled streets. The thick wire-bead tires offer maximum puncture protection and have reflective sidewalls for safer night riding.

The Verve 1 is compatible with Trek’s proprietary DuoTrap S wireless computer system (sold separately). The system tracks your cycling statistics and sends the information wirelessly to a Bluetooth or ANT+ enabled cycling computer or smartphone.

Trek Verve 2 Disc

trek verve 2

MSRP  $670 Best Features : Hydraulic Disc Brakes, Bontrager 700x45c wheels, Alpha Gold aluminum frame, Suspension seat post

The Verve 2 is an intermediate hybrid bike for casual riders with some nice components upgrades from Verve 1. Most notably, the Verve 2 is fitted with a higher-quality Shimano 8-speed cassette that offers a wider range of gears. It benefits from the same solid aluminum frame material but with a lighter alloy fork at the front.

  • Men’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) and two colors: Rage Red and Lithium Grey. Coming in at about 29 lbs (13.2 kg), it’s a bit lighter than the Verve 1 but equally strong and reliable.
  • Women’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes also in four sizes (XS, S, M, L) and two colors: Teal and Quiksilver. Weighing 28.8lbs (13kg).

Shimano Groupset

Trek Verve 2 Disc shimano groupset

The Verve 2 has a full Shimano drivetrain comprised of Altus and Tourney derailleurs and an 8-speed Shimano HG31 cassette. Combined with the triple cog on the crank gives you 24 gears in total, enough to tackle steep hills or hit the tarmac with speed.

Hydraulic disc brakes

The Verve 2 enjoys improved braking power with Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes. Hydraulic brakes provide quicker and more reactive braking power with less pressure required, ensuring you always stop in time and avoid accidents.

Suspension Seatpost

Trek Verve 2 Disc suspension saddle

While Verve 2 doesn’t have any suspension on the front or rear wheels it does get a nice touch with seat post suspension. The alloy adjustable seat post has a small added spring that gives up to 27.2mm of travel that will absorb any sudden bumps that creep up on you.

Aluminum Frame and Alloy Fork

The Verve 2 has the same Trek Alpha Gold aluminum frame as the Verve 1 with a lighter 415mm alloy fork. The comfortable frame geometry puts the rider in an upright position, with a 71.5-degree head angle and an average 70-degree seat tube angle.

Bontrager Wheels

The wheels on the Verve 2 are Bontrager Connection with size 700x45c Bontrager H5 wire-bead tires. The thick-treaded, reflective and puncture-protected tires are strong and resilient in all types of weather, ensuring you stay safe and visible even in low-light conditions.

Trek Verve 3 Disc

trek verve 3 bikes

MSRP  $820 Best Features : Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, Bontrager Hardcase wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, Shimano Acera Groupset

What Can Be Better?

Trek Verve fully equipped bicycle

It’s hard to find any cons about those bikes, and we really couldn’t find anything major. If you are willing to sacrifice the speed and ease of riding, you might want to swap the rigid fork to a front suspension with at least 50mm travel.

Another not-so-good fact about these bikes is that they look really nice and glossy, which means you have to take good care of it by not getting the frame scratched. We also recommend investing in a solid bicycle lock too as this bike simply won’t get unnoticed!

Conclusion: why is the verve so popular.

  • Built by Trek
  • Outworldly beautiful design
  • Unbeatable value in terms of geometry and components
  • Super comfortable and easy to ride
  • Rack & fender ready for maximum versatility

It is almost impossible to fit a front rack on the verve 3. There’s only a mid fork eyelet, and the fork is too wide for the little options there are for mid-fork mounting front racks.

A friend bought a Verve 1in black. It is labeled as a “1” yet it has much up-graded components. It’s more like a “3”. It was purchased and put to together by Trek employees. Is this possible?

Hi, could you recommend a specific brand of a front suspension fork that I could buy to replace the rigid front fork for the Trek Verve 3 disc lowstep with a medium frame?

Trek FX 1 (Disc) Review: Is It a Good Bike or Waste of Money?

Profile picture of Petr Minarik - the founder of cyclistshub.com

CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links.

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc hybrid bikes are often considered by beginners, commuters, and those who want to upgrade their old bike. But the question is, are they worth it?

Based on my overview of the hybrid bike market , comparisons with other brands, and components, the Trek FX 1 is worth it . You’ll especially appreciate its quality craftsmanship, comfortable ride thanks to wider tires, upright riding position, and affordable price.

Continue reading if you want to learn more about this bike, or buy it here (also available with rim brakes ).

Is Trek FX 1 (Disc) a Good Bike?

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc bikes are popular thanks to their affordable price and riding comfort. They retail for $599 and $699, respectively (in 2023).

They are available in multiple sizes (FX 1: S-XL, FX 1 Disc: XS-XXL), pleasing many riders.

You can also choose from two colors that change with each new generation. Trek also usually equips them with slightly modified components every year.

Another great news, especially for women, is that Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc are available as step-through options, making it easier to get on.

Pros and Cons of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc

Here, I summarized the pros and cons of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc.

Pros of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc

  • Quality and sturdy aluminum frame
  • FX 1 Disc has excellent stopping power thanks to disc brakes
  • Available for men and women
  • Excellent price-value ratio
  • Comfortable geometry, allowing upright riding position
  • Ergonomic grips for relieving pressure on your wrists
  • Compatible with racks and fenders
  • Flat pedals included
  • Compatible with DuoTrap S sensor

Cons of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc

  • 3X drivetrain (2X and 1X became more popular thanks to their simplicity)
  • Slightly heavier

To fully understand the pros and cons, I recommend reading the following section, where I compare its features with today’s hybrid bikes .

Main Features of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc

Let’s now dive deeper into Trek’s FX 1 and FX 1 Disc components so you better understand their value.

Aluminum Frame

One of the main features of every bike is its frame. All Treks FX 1 and FX 1 Disc were based on an aluminum frame.

Aluminum frames are durable, reasonably lightweight, and affordable. That’s why aluminum is still one of the most popular bike frame materials .

Their fork is made of steel, though. This means a weight increase and a little worse aesthetics as the fork doesn’t match the rest of the bike. But, function-wise, you can rely on it.

Red Trek FX 1 Disc hybrid bike with mechanical disc brakes.

The geometry of FX bikes is a bit more aggressive than other hybrid bikes for around $500 but still relaxed enough for an upright riding position.

This means you won’t experience back pain after long rides, and you don’t need to be as flexible as you would on high-performance road bikes, for example.

700c Wheels

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc have 700c wheels that are standard on hybrid and road bikes.

They come with 35mm hybrid tires, ensuring you can ride fast on paved roads, but they won’t puncture once you enter gravel.

Trek FX 1 Disc with H2 Comp hybrid tire.

These tires are one of the main reasons these bikes are so versatile. Of course, we are not talking about an MTB-like terrain but rather a compromise between road and gravel biking .

Trek FX bikes come with Shimano and Tektro components (drivetrain and brakes). The 3X drivetrain is one of the main weaknesses of these bikes. I know you will have more gears, but let me explain.

From my experience, most people often don’t know how to shift properly and often encounter cross-chaining.

Cross-chaining vs. good shifting - illustration of the wrong and right chain positions.

That’s why I believe 2X and 1X drivetrains are better for beginners and less experienced riders.

They are simpler to use and maintain. Furthermore, they are lighter. 3X drivetrains are too complicated.

Other components, like the saddle, seatpost, handlebar, stem, etc., were made by Trek’s brand Bontrager.

The 3×7spd drivetrain on FX 1 offers 21 gears, and FX 1 Disc has 3×8spd (24). That’s a lot. I have 22 on my road bike ( modern road bikes have 24).

Trek FX 1 Disc Shimano 3X drivetrain detail.

The gear ratios (i.e., the gears’ difficulty) range from easy gears suitable for steep climbs up to hard gears for fast descents.

Remember, FX 1 and FX 1 Disc gear ratios are slightly different. But you should be fine with both whether you live in a flat or hilly area.

Trek FX bikes come with a couple of extra features that are worth mentioning. First, they have ergonomic grips that reduce pressure on your palms. So, even if you ride without gloves, your hands won’t get sore.

Furthermore, FX bikes are compatible with the DuoTrap sensor. While not included with the bike, if you decide to get it, it will measure your cadence, speed, and distance ridden.

Of course, these bikes are also designed to be compatible with fenders, stands, and racks to increase your storage capacity.

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc Specifications

Below, I summarize the most important technical specifications.

  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Fork material: Steel
  • Weight: ±13 kg (28.7 lbs), depending on frame size
  • Wheel size: 700c
  • Brakes: Rim or disc
  • Groupset: Shimano Tourney/Altus
  • Gears: 3×7spd, 3×8spd (14-34T or 11-32T cassette)
  • Colors: Differ based on the year

The following pictures show the detailed specifications of the Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc.

Trek FX 1 Disc specifications.

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc Alternatives

One of the closest alternatives to the Trek FX family are the Co-op CTY bikes , especially the CTY 1.1 and CTY 1.2.

Eventually, you can check out bikes like Marin or Polygon or:

The hybrid bikes Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc aren’t perfect – no bike is. However, they offer a good price-value ratio.

They will reliably serve you whether you want to use them for commuting to work or maintaining your fitness.

They allow you to ride on asphalt, paved paths, bumpy roads, and even on terrain like dirt roads or light gravel.

So, which one will you choose? Personally, I would lean towards the FX 1 Disc version for its excellent stopping power.

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc FAQ

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc hybrid bikes are worth it, especially if you buy them discounted. They are ideal for beginners and those looking for an affordable and reliable bike for commuting.

Trek FX 1 weighs 12.57 kg (27.72 lbs), and the FX 1 Disc is 12.68 kg (27.96 lbs) in the M size.

Trek FX 1 (Disc) is the base model of the FX family. Higher-end models have better components, resulting in a lower overall bike weight. Check out my Trek FX bikes comparison for more info.

I have a 2024 v brake trek fx1 and i love it. Its probably the best bike I’ve ever had. Don’t like the mechanic at the shop I bought it from but I’ll definitely buy another trek bike if I could ever afford it. This thing glides. Love it. Somehow my rear v brake is spongy right after a break in adjustment and brake tune. Still figuring that out.

Cool. I am glad you enjoy it. 🙂 What do you mean by “spongy”? – Petr

Trek 7100 Review: Features and Specifications

Frame and fork.

If you’re looking for a hybrid bike that’s built to last and can handle a variety of terrains, the frame and fork are two components you want to pay close attention to. After all, they’re the backbone of the bike, providing stability and support as you ride.

Fortunately, the Trek 7100 has you covered in both departments. At the core of this bike is an Alpha white aluminum frame that’s designed to be both lightweight and strong. It’s built to last, so you won’t have to worry about it giving up on you after just a few rides.

trek orange hybrid bike

In addition to the frame, the fork is also an important component of any bike. The Trek 7100 comes equipped with a preload adjustable SR Suntour NEX fork that offers 50mm of travel.

This means that it can absorb the shock and vibrations that come with riding on rough or bumpy roads, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride.

And since the Trek 7100 is built for paved roads and city streets, the fork provides enough protection from road noise to make your ride more enjoyable.

But it’s not just about comfort – the Trek 7100 is designed to be efficient and fast, too. The steep head tube angle allows it to handle uphill and downhill commutes with ease, making it a great choice for riders who want a bike that can keep up with them.

Gears and Brakes

When it comes to hybrid bikes, having a wide gear range is crucial to getting the most out of your ride. It’s what allows you to smoothly transition between different speeds and handle a variety of terrains.

The Trek 7100 delivers on this front, thanks to its high-quality components. With 7-speed SRAM shifters and Shimano M191 front derailleur, you’ll be able to shift gears smoothly and easily, even when you’re going up steep hills or facing strong headwinds.

trek orange hybrid bike

And with an SRAM X3 rear derailleur, you can trust that your bike will handle whatever terrain you’re on.

But it’s not just about the gears – the brakes are just as important when it comes to the overall performance of a hybrid bike.

That’s why the Trek 7100 comes equipped with Tektro linear pull brakes that provide reliable stopping power when you need it. And when you’re navigating crowded city streets, you can trust that these brakes will help keep you safe and in control.

The combination of these components is what sets the Trek 7100 apart from other hybrid bikes on the market.

It’s built to deliver the performance of a road bike, but with the comfort and versatility of a hybrid bike. This makes it a great choice for commuting, exercising, or just getting around your neighborhood.

And despite being a low-end SRAM twist shifter, the performance of the Trek 7100’s gearing system is nothing to scoff at.

With a 21-speed set-up, you’ll have a wide range of gears to choose from, allowing you to customize your ride to your preferences.

Plus, the shifts are quick and easy, so you won’t have to worry about fumbling with the gears while on the go.

Wheels and Tires

The wheels and tires of a bike play a crucial role in its performance, and Trek 7100 hybrid bike has impressive wheels and tires that make it stand out from other bikes in its class.

trek orange hybrid bike

It has Bontrager H4 tires, which are sized at 700 x 35c and known for accelerating quickly on flat trails. They are perfect for smooth roads and provide excellent traction, especially when combined with the 3X7 drivetrain.

Even though it’s not as fast as a road bike, the 7100 is more comfortable to ride than many road bikes in the same price range. I believe comfort is important for commuters who spend a lot of time on their bike.

The rims also feature the same high-quality construction as the rest of the bike’s components. It’s a Bontrager 550 36-hole alloy rims, which are double-walled to ensure durability.

From experience, I’d say the combination of road bike tires and strong alloy rims make the Trek 7100 an excellent commuter bike.

Saddle and Handlebars

The Trek 7100 has a wide, well-padded saddle that offers great comfort for your backside, especially on longer rides. The flexible suspension seatpost is an added bonus, as it provides additional protection from impacts on the road.

And you can easily customize your riding position to suit your comfort level, since the seat height can be adjusted for a good fit.

trek orange hybrid bike

The handlebars are Bontrager Approved with a solid steel build and a 50mm rise. This design allows you to ride with a comfortable posture that reduces stress on your shoulders, back, and neck.

Trek 7100 also has an adjustable stem; a great feature that lets you fine-tune your bike’s fitting to your specific needs. The stem allows you to adjust the height of the handlebars, and by doing so, you can achieve a more comfortable riding position for your body type and riding style.

This feature is especially important when you’re going on long rides, as you may need to adjust your position frequently to avoid fatigue.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Size  Small  frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This makes for a lower standover height, which is better for shorter rides because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (size  Medium  and upwards) have a straight top tube because taller riders typically don’t have the same issues.

Hybrid Bike Sizing Guide

Hybrid bikes as the name suggests are a blend of a road bike and a mountain bike. The fit is a little more precise than a mountain bike, and a little less than a road bike, so you do see a mixture of t-shirt style sizing and measurements in CM and INCHES too. The fit will be more relaxed than a classic road bike though, and is designed to be a little more forgiving and upright.

If you need any more advice on bike sizing for hybrid bikes please contact us and we can help you make the right choice.

Best hybrid bikes - Fast bikes for leisure and commuting

The best hybrid bikes will get you around town fast and keep going into the countryside when it's time to relax

A cyclist riding a Specialized sirrus in a city

What to look for in a hybrid bike

The best hybrid bikes are designed for a relaxed, upright riding position, that still maintains handling and lets you ride fast.

Sometimes called fitness bikes, hybrid bikes make some of the best commuter bikes . Their upright position helps you to see and be seen as you ride and makes it easy to stop as well as mount and dismount.

The flat bars, brakes and trigger gear shifters on a hybrid bike are easy to use, while most models will allow you to fit mudguards for protection in wet weather riding and a rack to help carry luggage.

Often there are multiple frame shape options, so you can find a bike to suit your riding style and preferences.

That makes the best hybrid bikes super-versatile, but if you plan to use public transport, the best folding bikes may be easier to use. We've also covered the best women's hybrid bikes as well as the best hybrid bikes under £500 if you're looking for more choices.

Here's our pick of the best hybrid bikes, while towards the bottom of this page is our buyer's guide to what to look for in a hybrid bike.

A metallic green flat bar Cannondale Quick 3 bike leaning against a grey brick wall

1. Cannondale Quick 4

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

With a respectable lightweight aluminium frame, every decal and logo on the Cannondale Quick is reflective, so it lights up a Christmas tree to help you be seen in low-light conditions.

The frame itself has rack and fender mounts, and the rear end has flex tuned into the stays to keep you comfortable as you ride — Cannondale call this SAVE Micro-Suspension. Cannondale has specced a Shimano Altus / Acera 1x9-speed drivetrain, complete with a wide range 11-42T cassette and a 38T narrow-wide chainring on the Quick 4. Not only does this simplify shifting while still providing a wide gear range but it also helps make dropped chains a thing of the past. Other specs get a double chainring for a wider range of gears.

We rated the Quick's lively, comfortable ride and responsive handling, while the 35mm tyres provide some extra comfort on potholed roads and the hydraulic disc brakes provide confidence-inspiring stopping power.

Like the Cannondale Treadwell, which we've also reviewed, there's Cannondale's wheel-mounted sensor that lets you record ride data on the Cannondale app and you can mount your phone to the bars to use it as a cycling computer .

There's a specific women's model as well as the unisex Quick, giving you lots of size range.

You can read more in our full review of the Cannondale Quick hybrid bike.

A pack shot of a bright yellow and orange bicycle with a step through frame

2. Cannondale Treadwell 3

Cannondale's Treadwell features a sloping top tube to create a low standover height and has what the brand classes as an 'easy geometry,' with either a kinked or dropped top tube making for quick on and off mounts and dismounts.

With BMX-inspired flat bars and an aluminium frame, the bike features urban armour bumpers to protect the tubing from dings when you lean your bike against a pole or rack. As with the Quick, Cannondale also specs its speed and cadence sensor and an intellimount stem which will securely hold any SP connect compatible phone case, so you can track your rides through the Cannondale App. You're even reminded when the bike is due for a service.

The Treadwell's big 47mm tyres and 13kg weight make it sluggish to get up to speed, but if you're after a bike for easy rides around town and short weekend excursions, it fits the bill without breaking the bank and its simple mechanical components should be low maintenance.

A Trek FX Disc hybrid in Viper Red against a wall

3. Trek FX 2 Disc (Equipped)

Coming out of the big red barn in Waterloo Wisconsin, the FX range makes up Trek's hybrid bikes. The FX 2 Disc is available in two options: Standard or Equipped, the latter of which comes equipped with a pannier rack, mudguards, lights and a kickstand as standard. The frame is made from Trek's Alpha Gold aluminium and features internal cable routing and mounts galore.

The FX 2 Disc isn't a particularly flashy bike, nor is it particularly lightweight for its price point, but despite this, the ride is responsive and enjoyable, making us look for errands to run just so we could ride it again.

Trek opted for hydraulic flat-mount disc brakes on the FX 2 Disc, so braking will always be confident, and with little to no maintenance required. For those seeking more of a fitness bike, the standard (non-equipped) FX 2 Disc is a good option, but it would possibly benefit from an upgrade from the Acera groupset. The next step up - the FX 3 Disc - comes with a 2x10 Shimano Deore, which is a big step up if you can stretch the budget.

Cube Hyde Pro has clean, speedy lines

4. Cube Hyde Pro

Cube's Hyde Pro is built around a lightweight, robust aluminium frame and fork. Unlike our other recommendations, it sees a Gates Belt drive so no need to worry about regular maintenance. The belt drive does away with a regular chain and sprockets and uses a belt and toothed cogs for a quiet, low-maintenance transmission. Flat-mount Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes paired with 160mm rotors, mean the Hyde can stop on a dime and should stay that way with little additional attention.

The Schwalbe Big Apple tyres are well armoured to prevent punctures - they are also tubeless. So, should you roll through a patch of broken glass, you won't be left stuck on the side of the road faffing with tyre levers. What's more, at 55mm wide, there's a huge amount of cushioning to keep you comfortable for your entire ride, so uneven roads and potholed surfaces needn't worry you.

Ribble Hybrid AL hybrid bike is a comfortable choice

5. Ribble Hybrid AL

Our favourite thing about Ribble Bikes is that its bike builder area of the website allows you to customise your ride to meet your exact specifications. Want 650b wheels and tyres instead of 700c? No problem. How about a parcel rack and mudguards? For sure. Do you think that the front derailleur should be put to bed once and for all? No worries, you can have a 1x drivetrain.

The Hybrid all-rounder is designed for speed and efficiency but with the ability to customise the components, Ribble has used a versatile geometry that allows it to be adapted for your intended use. With rack and fender mounts, front and rear, the bike uses thru-axles and sees dropped seat stays for added levels of compliance.

You don't have to customise it though, there are well-considered off-the-shelf packages available too. There's an electric version, the Ribble Hybrid AL e, that we rate among the best electric bikes for commuting .

Ridgeback Speed hybrid bike comes with a triple chainset for plenty of gear options

6. Ridgeback Speed

Ridgeback's hybrid bikes are an excellent and popular gateway into urban cycling for many. They're practical and comfortable, often come with a full set of mudguards and a rear rack already fitted, and can be an excellent choice for someone who just wants to get going the moment it's built.

It features a 3x7 Shimano Tourney drivetrain, and Promax V-brakes which, while they're not disc brakes, are very easy to maintain at home, replacement pads are also cheap. It comes stock with cushy 42mm tyres that will soak up many of the bumps on the road and maintain grip when the weather takes a turn.

As a brand, Ridgeback offers a huge range of hybrid bikes, starting as low as £299 and increasing in price by £50 increments, with only one or two prominent changes to the build. This means that if the Speed isn't quite up to scratch for your needs, it's incredibly easy to find a Ridgeback hybrid bike that has what you need at a price point you're comfortable with.

Vitus Mach 3 VRS is a good value package with disc brakes

7. Vitus Mach 3 VRS

Well specced for the price, the Vitus Mach 3 VRS is the mid-spec bike from a three-model line-up. It comes with 2x9-speed Shimano Sora shifting, although the combination of a 50/34T chainset and 11-28T cassette means that the available gear range is a bit less than many other hybrid bike options. This marks it out as a slightly more speed-orientated hybrid, and Sora is a road-gearing groupset. It's easily upgradable to a cassette with a 32-tooth largest sprocket though, if you do want more range for hillier rides.

The 38mm wide tyres are lightly treaded and give plenty of grip without sacrificing rolling speed, so the Mach 3 would serve for both faster city riding and a trip out onto tracks and trails. With rack and mudguard mounts, it's a bike that's easy to weatherproof too.

At 10kg claimed weight for the size medium bike, the Vitus Mach 3 isn't too onerous to carry up stairs and over obstacles either, while the sloping geometry and one-piece bar and stem give the bike a modern, sporty look.

Marin Larkspur has a dropped top tube for easy on and off

8. Marin Larkspur 2 2021

Whether you're looking for something that prioritises comfort and mobility, or you just want something a bit different, take a closer look at the Marin Larkspur. This unique-looking bike takes the step-through concept and turns it into some modernised goofy fun, adding in a dropper post for easy remounting in traffic, as well as chunky 650b x 2.35in tyres.

The Larkspur is at home on paved roads and gravel paths alike, cushioning the blows from uneven surfaces and leaving you to float over potholes without care. The swooped handlebars put the rider in an upright position that makes it possible to see further ahead in traffic, the step-through frame makes mounting and dismounting a breeze, and extremely low gearing will make hill-climbing light work for most. It also makes the Larkspur a solid option for anyone with mobility or joint issues.

Best hybrid bikes: Tern Eclipse X22 folds for easy storage

9. Tern Eclipse X22

Not everybody has room to store a stable of bikes, but that doesn't mean that two-wheeled transport is out of reach. Tern's Eclipse X22 finds the right balance between folding capability and riding efficiency. With 26in wheels and tyres, the bike is vastly more energy efficient over long distances than its smaller wheeled folding cousins but still compactly folds down to 38 x 90 x 81cm.

The geometry is also considerably more aggressive than many folders, and it boasts a 2x11 Ultegra drivetrain and Shimano SLX hydraulic disc brakes - quality components that help to justify the Tern's bigger price tag than the majority of hybrids here.

Giant Toughroad SLR has chunky tyres for off-road action

10. Giant ToughRoad SLR 2

The ToughRoad, as the name suggests, is designed to keep you going regardless of whether you're riding on glass-smooth tarmac, rough gravel or bone-rattling cobblestones. Made from the brand's ALUXX SLR aluminium, the ToughRoad also has a carbon fork to reduce weight and absorb some of the vibrations coming through the front end. To keep your rear end sitting pretty, Giant has opted to use its D-fuse seatpost for improved compliance, 50mm Giant Sycamore tyres for grip, and plenty of damping too.

The flat-bar geometry keeps the rider in a comfortable position that finds the right balance between comfort and pedalling efficiency, and the frame sees heaps of mounts, as well as an integrated fender on the down tube. With a mix of Shimano Acera, Alivio and Altus components, the bike has a 9-speed, 11-36T cassette and 44/28T chainrings.

Specialized Sirrus 2.0 is a quality, basic option

11. Specialized Sirrus 2.0

Made from Specialized's A1 alloy, the Sirrus 2.0 features internal cable routing and plug-and-play fender and rack mounts front and rear. The dropped chainstays at the rear promote a bit of flex at the seat cluster to take the edge off of square hits which combined with the 32C tyres provide for a smooth rider — there is room for 42C rubber should you want a higher volume tyre.

Hydraulic disc brakes provide heaps of power and modulation regardless of the weather and should stay that way for years to come with maintenance. The 2x8 Shimano Acera/Tourney drivetrain with an 11-32 cassette and 46/30T chainrings allow for plenty of range to get you through that hilly commute, without sweating through your shirt.

Orbea Vector 15 comes ready fitted with a rack and mudguards

12. Orbea Vector 15

If you need a workhorse that can do pretty much everything you want, from commuting to work to carrying the shopping home, but you can't be bothered to figure out all the additional accessories you need to go with it, then you're in luck. The Orbea Vector 15 is ready to roll, complete with front and rear mudguards, a rear pannier rack and front and rear dynamo lights. All you need to do is don your helmet, grab your best bike lock and start riding to the office.

What's more, the Vector is built around Orbea's Body Sport Geometry, which prioritises comfort, placing the rider in a relaxed and more upright position so that you can see clearly in traffic and ride for as long as you need to without feeling discomfort.

Chances are, if you're on the lookout for a hybrid, you may be about to buy your first bike as an adult. If that's the case, there's a lot of choice out there and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. To make life easier for you, we've listed some of the key considerations for choosing the right hybrid bike for your needs.

What is a hybrid bike?

A hybrid bike, as per the definition of the word hybrid; is "a thing made by combining two different elements" and is a combination of road and mountain bikes.

For example, flat handlebars are usually seen as a defining feature of a mountain bike or fitness bike. This is not only because the wider width makes for manageable steering and an upright riding position, but also because hybrids typically have a geometry with a longer reach than a traditional road bike.

The wheels are typically 700c in size - the same as road bikes - with slick or semi-slick tyres that are somewhere between the two when it comes to the width. The handlebars are more akin to a mountain bike style, being flat in shape, as opposed to the drop bar shape found on a road bike. The geometry sits in the middle of the two, putting you in a fast position, but still one that's upright enough to remain comfortable and safe in traffic.

If you're more interested in riding off-road and gaining a bit of speed, check out our Gravel bike vs hybrid bike feature.

Are disc brakes worth it on a hybrid bike?

There is no question that disc brakes provide better performance than rim brakes. They offer superior power and modulation, and performance is much less affected by wet weather. Depending on the price, hybrid bikes will either come with hydraulic or cable-actuated discs. While they cost a bit more, hydraulic discs require less maintenance and less force at the lever to achieve more braking power, because more leverage can be engineered into the system. In general, try to look for hydraulic disc brakes if you are shopping for a new hybrid bike.

What gearing do I need?

When we talk about gearing, what we're really referring to is the bike's drivetrain.

The main drivetrain choices for hybrid bikes are belt-driven drivetrains and or internally geared ones. 1x (one-by), 2x (two-by) or a triple chainset which uses regular chains and sprockets. Belt drive systems replace a metal chain for a belt and internally geared drivetrains package all of the gears inside the rear hub, meaning they require very little maintenance. And all the shifting is done with a single lever. The downside is they are anything but light and the total gear range is usually less broad than a derailleur-geared system.

1x, 2x and triple systems are the traditional chain and derailleur-operated drivetrains, with the difference being the number of chainrings at the front.

A 1x drivetrain can offer the same, or even a wider gear range than a 2x system, and will feature a clutched rear derailleur to handle chain slack and a narrow-wide chainring which will prevent your chain from falling off the chainring. Shifting is operated with a single lever. The downside is they are a bit more expensive, and sometimes the jumps between the gears can be pretty big.

A 2x drivetrain is usually more budget-friendly, and will generally offer the widest spread of gears, but with extra components comes extra maintenance, which can also complicate shifting for beginners.

Some bikes even offer a 3x system, but these are few and far between nowadays as the need for the smallest inner chainring was replaced by larger cassettes (the sprocket at the back) offering the same low gears.

What other features should I look for in a hybrid bike?

Hybrid bikes are often used in all weather conditions and most frames will have mounting points for mudguards , even if the bike is not fitted with them.

A rear rack can be useful for carrying stuff. Again, look out for the mounting points at the rear, both on the dropouts where the wheel's hub fits into the frame and higher up on the seat stays.

Lights are also a useful addition for safety and essential if riding at night. Again, some hybrids will have these fitted, while you may need to budget for them as an extra if not.

Many hybrid bikes will come fitted with a bell, which can be useful when riding in town. This may be a basic number though. For something altogether more flashy, check out our guide to the best bike bells .

A kickstand is another option which may or may not be present, but can be useful, particularly for urban riders.

Do I need a suspension fork?

Lots of hybrid bikes come with suspension forks, but we believe that these should largely be avoided. Not only are they heavier and more expensive than a rigid fork, but those fitted to hybrid bikes are often very cheap and don't provide much in the way of efficient shock absorption. Low-end forks like this usually ride like a bouncy mess, and over time are likely to seize anyway. If you are worried about riding comfort, prioritise a bike with lots of tyre clearance, wide tyres and possibly 650b wheels, which allow even wider tyres.

Are Trek Hybrid Bikes Any Good?

A hybrid bike is one versatile two-wheel beast. Whether you want to commute to work or school, run errands, or explore light trails, a hybrid bike comes in handy, and one of the leading hybrid makers is Trek. But are Trek hybrid bikes any good?

Trek hybrid bikes are good because they are top-quality in build, comfortable to ride, easy to accessorize, affordable, and work on all terrains. Even better, Trek stocks women dedicated and kids hybrid lines alongside men’s options.

Moreover, the bikes come in various types, including fitness, recreation, dual-sport, and electric options, promising different performances.

But like any other hybrid bike, Trek hybrid bicycles have a few put-offs, which I will discuss in this post.

are trek hybrid bikes any good

In a rush? Check out some of Trek’s best hybrid bikes.

4 Best Trek Hybrid Bikes

1. FX3 Disc: Best Trek Fitness Hybrid Bike

2. Dual Sport 2 : Best Trek Dual-Sport Hybrid Bike

3. Verve 2 Disc: Best Trek Recreational Hybrid Bike

4. Allant+ 9.9S : Best Trek Electric Hybrid Bike

The Good (Trek Hybrid Bikes Selling Points)

While Trek hybrid bicycles are not perfect, they have several outstanding qualities and features that make them a must-buy. They include:

a) Top-Quality Build

Trek hybrid are quality bikes. Everything is high-quality, from their rugged tires and lightweight frames to the individual drivetrains and e-bikes’ Bosch transmission system.

Their frame and rims won’t collapse when you ride off-road. Likewise, their drivetrains won’t break down on you unless under extreme abuse.

And with Trek employing the innovative OCLV carbon technology on most of its high-end hybrid bikes , it’s all about quality.

Even the midrange options which employ alpha aluminum frame technology feel just as lightweight and robust as OCLV carbon options.

b) Comfortable to Ride

Trek hybrid bikes, more so dual-sport options, come with stronger suspension forks for effective bump absorption. The suspension fork softens the hard hits when you ride on -road and on paved surfaces.

Trek hybrid bikes also enjoy a more upright, relaxed geometry to allow you to ride without putting too much strain on the back. They also feature a suspension seat post and slightly wide and cushy saddles to relieve you from saddle numbness.

review trek hybrid bikes

c) All-Terrain Performance

When you compare Trek hybrid bikes, there is nowhere you cannot go with a Trek hybrid, more so a dual-sport. Perhaps you won’t dominate the terrain as you would probably do with a Trek mountain bike , but no one can stop you from riding there.

These bike tires are more rugged for optimal traction and big enough to roll over obstacles outdoors smoothly.

d) Easy to Accessorize

A good hybrid bike should be easy to accessorize with commuting essentials such as fenders, bells or horns, water cages, racks, and cycling computers.

Trek hybrid bikes, especially fitness options, offer you these advantages. They allow you to personalize them as much as you want to suit your commuting or fitness needs.

That means you can give a low-end Trek hybrid the upgrade you have ever wanted just by doing a few tweaks.

e) Bike Variety

What do you want to do with a Trek hybrid? If your goal is to cycle for fitness and run a few errands once in a while, you should get a Trek fitness hybrid bicycle.

If you only want a casual bike that you can ride for fun on weekends, a Trek recreational hybrid is your best bet. But if you want a multi-purpose bike that you can depend on all terrains, exercise with, or use for commuting, you have to go for a dual-sport.

However, if you want some pedaling assistance more so, when commuting, you cannot go wrong with a Trek electric hybrid.

I’ll review Trek hybrid bikes in all those categories later.

trek hybrid bike comparison

f) Affordable Bikes

The electric options aside, Trek non-motorized bikes are among the most affordable hybrid bikes on the market today. You can get most of them under $800, a bargain for a leading bike manufacturer like Trek.

While these bikes are not the most high-end, they are just enough to beat most of Trek’s competition.

g) Women’s and Kids Dedicated Hybrid Lines

The bike maker understands that not many women are tall enough or confident enough to ride Trek mens hybrid bikes. For that reason, the manufacturer has a dedicated women’s line that features some of the most affordable and most user-friendly hybrids.

Trek has also done the same with kids. Kids, especially the youth, now have a Trek bike line dedicated to their cycling needs.

Faulting Trek hybrid bicycles is not easy as every feature you look at is a selling point. That, however, does not conclude that there aren’t a few areas where Trek could do better.

For example, an option like the Trek Verve line only comes with a rigid fork that takes away the comfort and ease of cycling. You may have to swap it with a robust front suspension, preferably with 50mm or more travel.

The other thing is that while the frames are pretty aesthetic, they are easy to scratch, taking away their beauty.

Furthermore, while the bikes are quality in build, some components are not up to Trek’s standard. That includes the pedals, kickstand, and a few seats, which are sometimes low quality.

But those few concerns aside, Trek hybrid bikes are worth the money.

Trek Hybrid Bike Ranges (Trek Hybrid Bike Reviews)

Trek stocks the following hybrid bike types:

  • Fitness hybrid bike
  • Recreational hybrid
  • Dual sport hybrid
  • Electric hybrid

Are Trek Fitness Hybrid Bikes Good?

Trek fitness hybrid bikes come with skinnier wheels and a rigid fork to allow you to ride faster on the pavement.

These bicycles are fast, but they are also fun to ride, thus great for exercising. But still, they are easy to accessorize with commuting essentials like water cages, racks, baskets, and fenders to allow you to turn them into your commuter bike.

Trek fitness bikes are also comfortable to ride owing to their lightweight frames, Bontrager saddles, and Grip handlebars. Moreover, they come with multi-gear drivetrains for easy shifting and disc brakes for easy stopping in all conditions.

One Trek fitness hybrid bicycle that you can count on is the FX3 Disc. Thanks to its stiff but lightweight aluminum frame and carbon fork, this hybrid bike is faster on-road.

Its 10-speed drivetrain allows you to smoothly shift across varying terrains as its hydraulic disc brakes offer crisp all-condition stopping. The hybrid bike is generally easy to accessorize thus suitable also for commuting.

trek mens hybrid bikes

Are Trek Recreational Hybrid Bikes Good?

Trek recreational bicycles are all about comfort. These hybrid bikes enjoy an upright geometry that lets you ride in a more relaxed manner.

They have wider tires, unlike fitness hybrids, which makes them slower but more stable and comfortable. These bikes also come equipped with suspension seat post and cushy saddles that improves their overall comfort.

They also come with powerful disc brakes that work well in all weather.

One recreational hybrid that promises value for money is Verve 2 Disc . This hybrid bike is best for recreational cycling around town and fitness cycling and commuting.

Its suspension seat post and padded saddle make it pretty comfortable, and thanks to its hydraulic disc brake, you can count on its crisp stoppage in all weather.

Even better, it enjoys an alpha aluminum frame which feels as lightweight as a carbon frame.

Are Trek Dual Sport Hybrid Bikes Good?

A Trek dual-sport is what most people will consider a true hybrid.

This bike’s robust suspension fork soaks up bumps on all surfaces, while its rugged tires offer you traction also on all surfaces. Thus there is no terrain that you cannot ride with a dual-sport Trek.

These bikes are also easier to accessorize either for commuting or fitness reasons. Meanwhile, they enjoy a more rugged build to withstand aggressive usage.

One unique Trek dual sport for your consideration is Dual Sport 2 . This hybrid bike is quite versatile to take on all kinds of surfaces.

Its hydraulic disc brakes offer crisp stoppage, while its multi-surface tires allow you to take on smooth and rough surfaces. It also provides you vast tire clearance to fit most 700c wheels, and it’s generally fender and rack-ready, thus easy to accessorize.

trek hybrid bike reviews

Are Trek Electric Hybrid Bikes Good?

Speed is the order of the day when it comes to Trek Hybrid electric bikes . Trek fits Bosch motors on all their electric bicycles , which promise maximum top speed.

Some of these e-bikes quickly clock 28 mph on perfect roads. As a result, it’s easy to beat traffic with a Trek hybrid e-bike.

The bikes also enjoy long-range waterproof batteries that allow you to go long distances and cycle in the rain. Moreover, the battery is lockable with a key, thus safer.

One amazing Trek hybrid e-bike is the Allant+ 9.9S . This e-bike is a worthy replacement for your car when it comes to commuting to work.

That is thanks to its powerful Borsch motor that offers you an assisted speed of up to 28mph and a Borsch long-range battery. Even better, it enjoys a lightweight OCLV carbon frame that improves its comfort and speed.

For most fitness riders, hybrid bikes—also called “fitness bikes”—are the solution. They’re designed to offer the lightweight design of many road-racing bikes, but with a more comfortable, confident upright riding stance. Most come with wider tires, too, which makes cruising rough, potholed city streets a whole lot more bearable. Plus, the best models are built with premium components like hydraulic disc brakes, battery-free lights, and low- to zero-maintenance drivetrains. These definitely aren’t the kid-friendly Huffy bikes you grew up with.

All of which is to say that bikes, even hybrid bikes , are deceptively complex. Whether you’re just getting started in your cycling journey or are looking to upgrade your current two-wheeler, there’s a perfect model out there for you. But where to start? We’ve done the legwork for you to research and personally test many of the top-rated bikes on the market. Here are our picks for the best hybrid bikes worth riding in 2023

Best Bikes for Men | Best Folding Electric Bikes | Best Electric Bikes | Best Recumbent Exercise Bikes | Best Cycling Shorts

Versatile, comfortable, and affordable—everything that makes Specialized’s wildly popular Sirrus 2.0 a solid buy for just about anyone. The lightweight design couples an aluminum alloy frame with a steel fork that altogether weighs roughly 27 pounds. Its ProMax F1 hydraulic disc brakes provide serious and reliable stopping power on any terrain. The result? The perfect balance of durability with easy, comfortable handling for riders of any skill level. That includes everyone from first-time adult riders to daily commuters.

It’s not the most budget-friendly bike in Specalized’s lineup, nor the most premium. At around $800 (closer to $600 on sale), it’s an incredibly affordable model for anyone looking to step up from an entry-level hybrid but who isn’t quite ready to drop $2,000 or more on a high-end two-wheeler. Of course, when you’re ready to upgrade your upgrade, Specialized’s lineup runs all the way up to the Sirrus 6.0.

What do buyers say? “This is the first Specialized bike. I've had many before but from the other brands. Very impressed. Light enough, smooth gears and stiff. Very well-made bicycle,” said one Specialized.com reviewer.

The all-new FX Sport 6 is the flagship in Trek’s FX lineup with a fitness-focused geometry that’s light, fast, and easy to ride. "Tipping the scales" at just over 20 pounds, the carbon frame is remarkably lightweight. It offers all the same features of a premium road bike—a 400 Series OCLV Carbon frame, carbon wheels, and a Shimano drivetrain—but with a flat handlebar design. It all combines in a hybrid bike that’s damn near-perfect for riders of all stripes, including commuters, newbies, and advanced fitness cyclists. Plus, the slick, blacked-out design looks pretty handsome too.

We’ve been fans of Trek for years and the FX Sport 6 is a standout among the company’s stellar lineup. It’s no surprise, given the nearly $3,000 price tag, which makes it the most expensive in this year’s round-up. But with solid buyer reviews and premium components throughout, we think it’s worth it. Plus, Trek’s 30-day unconditional guarantee means you can return it for any reason (even if it’s just because you changed your mind) for a full refund.

What do buyers say? “My previous Trek 2.6 was all the rage until I purchased this. The FX6 ia so much faster, better handling even with the fatter tires and lower pressure. They are great for the road,” said one TrekBikes.com reviewer.

If you’re looking for an upgrade to your entry-level two-wheeler but aren’t ready or willing to splash out on $3,000 high-end model, we like Priority’s Continuum Onyx. The brand is well-known for some of the best commuter bikes, and this hybrid model is no exception. It features premium components throughout, including a rust-free Gates Carbon belt drive, dynamo-powered (read battery-free) lights, and beefy 700x32mm WTB tires that are extremely flat-resistant. Enviolo CTV shifters guarantee smooth, responsive shifting and high-end Tektro hydraulic disc brakes deliver plenty of stopping power in tight city conditions.

At roughly $1,300, this certainly isn’t a cheap hybrid bike. But it’s built with premium parts from tip to tail, making that midrange price tag seem entirely reasonable. Everything that makes it a near-perfect commuter bike also ensures it’s a good fit for newbies and even more advanced riders.

What do buyers say? “It was very easy to assemble. I love the look and love the feel. Very quiet and solid,” said one PriorityBicycles.com reviewer.

Folding bikes used to be something of a novelty. They were rarely anything you’d actually want to ride (or be seen riding). Not so with Tern’s Verge D9. It’s our go-to pick for this year’s best folding hybrid bike. Proprietary T-Tuned geometry coupled with beefier 37mm tires makes this a more stable and comfortable model than most folders. Shimano hydraulic disc brakes provide solid stopping power on both wet and dry pavement. The saddle seat is also purpose-designed for shoulder-mounted carrying. Plus, we love that the entire bike folds or unfolds in just 10 seconds and is small enough to fit under a desk.

This is no doubt a specialty bike that’s designed with commuters and city dwellers in mind—hence the roughly $1,150 price tag. It’s at least 50% more than a comparably priced standard (non-folding) hybrid bike. But, if you’re looking for one of the most compact, street-friendly hybrid solutions on the market, you’ve found it. What’s more, Tern designed it with easy upgrading in mind.

What do buyers say? “Great choice. So versatile and easy to ride. Smooth ride for my 1.5 miles one way commute,” said one REI reviewer.

True to its name, Giant’s ToughRoad SLR 2 is a hybrid bike that’s built for less-than-ideal riding conditions. That includes smooth city streets, loose gravel bike paths, and everything in between. It’s made possible via a proprietary ALUXX SLR aluminum frame with a lightweight, durable carbon fork—both of which are ultra-durable yet absorb harsh front-end vibrations. Giant’s D-fuse seatpost and extra-grippy tires add an extra degree of comfort and confidence to your ride. Like other hybrid bikes in our roundup, this model features a standard flat-bar design with a more upright position that’s great for a wide variety of terrain and ride lengths.

Like most Giant two-wheelers, this hybrid bike is priced right at just over $1,000. That’s squarely at the midrange of our roundup, making it the perfect upgrade from most entry-level cycles. While it’s not a true mountain bike, it’s the closest hybrid model in our roundup that we’re comfortable taking on light off-road rides.

What do buyers say? “A higher ride position is enjoyable, shifting is smooth and quick, ride is very comfortable on rail bed trail locally,” said one Giant-Bicycles.com reviewer.

Of course, we can’t roundup the best hybrid bikes without throwing in a hybrid electric bike. Ribble’s Hybrid AL E Electric Bike is our favorite hybrid-style eBike of the year. The general framework is purpose-built with speed and efficiency in mind, making it one of the company’s best options for commuters and other city riders. But the geometry is incredibly versatile, allowing for complete customization of almost every component. If you want to add a rear storage rack, mudguards, and fatter tires, for example, all you have to do is ask. That also means you get the exact paint job you’re looking for, from blacked-out to cool blue to eye-popping red.

Under the “hood,” the Hybrid AL E is powered by a 250Wh battery which delivers roughly 60 miles on a single charge. It fast-charges in roughly three hours, too, so you can take it to work and top it up for your ride home. Ribble’s ebikemotion system weighs less than eight pounds and is so compact and perfectly built into the bike’s frame that it’s practically invisible. That only streamlines the look and the aerodynamics, but also makes it less of a target for thieves.

What do buyers say? “If you want to look stylish around town and arrive where you’re going sweat-free, it’s definitely one to consider,” said one RibbleCycles.co.uk reviewer.

For riders who like the convenience of a step-through model, Co-op Cycles’ CTY 2.1 is our favorite hybrid option. The low standover height allows for easy mounting and dismounting, while also ensuring it’s easy to stand with both feet square on the ground. The Shimano Altus 2x8 drivetrain serves up 16 available gear combinations. Coupled with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, it’s a satisfying ride around town, even over hilly, potholed terrain. The 40-mm-wide tires and shock-absorbing fork also ensure a smooth, bump-free ride.

What we especially love, though, is the price. At roughly $800, it’s on the low-end of our favorite midrange models. Given its excellent reviews and better-than-average components, we think it’s worth the premium for anyone looking to step up from a more entry-level hybrid. Because REI Co-op Cycles are only available to members, be sure to account for the (totally reasonable) $30 lifetime membership fee if you don’t already have one.

What do buyers say? “Great commuter & path bike! Perfect bike for riding around the neighborhood to stay in shape. It handles the gravel and overgrown paths with ease and is just as great on the road/sidewalk,” said one REI.com reviewer.

If $500+ is too rich for your wallet, there are other options. Schwinn’s lineup of entry-level hybrid adult bikes includes the Schwinn GTX Comfort. While it lacks the better components of our favorite premium models, this is a solid alternative for budget-conscious bicyclists. The design relies on an aluminum dual-sport frame and suspension fork that tackles city streets and light trails with aplomb. Like the best hybrid bikes of this year, it features a flat-bar design and a more upright riding position that combine for a comfortable, confident ride.

Schwinn is most synonymous with entry-level bikes that “hardcore” riders might scoff at. But, if you’re looking for a durable, reliable two-wheeler that’s ready to tackle most urban and suburban terrain, this is a solid option. We especially love that it’s available starting at less than $300 (depending on the exact model), which feels like a steal.

What do buyers say? “Great bike for the money. So far this bike has been great, and makes the daily commute to work a lot more fun,” said one Amazon reviewer.

horizontal black line

Like most fitness gear, bikes are entirely personal. The best bike for your neighbor might not be right for you. It’s all a matter of aesthetics, price, weight, gearing, features, and how and where you most often ride. But there are a few key things to consider when shopping for the best hybrid bike for you. Here’s the low-down:

Drop Bar or Flat Bar

Hybrid bikes are similar to traditional road bikes in that they typically boast a lightweight frame that rolls on fast 700c wheels. What sets them apart, however, is that hybrid bikes are almost always built with a flat handlebar, while road bikes use a drop bar. The former uses a wider design for a wider hand stance that makes riding easier to control with better break access and an upright seating position. The result is a more comfortable ride that’s perfect for casual (read non-racing) cyclists and commuters, too. Hybrid bikes can feature a drop bar, too, but they’re specifically designed for a flat handlebar.

It’s All in the Gearing

In general, hybrid/fitness bikes feature two chainrings up front and usually 9-11 cogs at the rear. The latter helps to better dial in your shifts for a smoother, more predictable ride on everything from bike paths to hilly city streets. Budget hybrids sometimes include three front chainrings. It’s a setup that trades performance for price, however.

Modern disc brakes seriously changed the game for cyclists. They’re more expensive than traditional rim-style brakes, but better in every way, offering more precise control in both dry and wet conditions. Beginners and cyclists who love long rides love them, too, because they require less hand strength to operate. More budget-friendly hybrid bikes may be built with cable-actuated disc brakes. These offer similar performance but aren’t as powerful and require a bit more maintenance.

Hybrid bikes, like many of the best bikes, vary widely in price. Decent budget models start around $400, while mid-range models run north of $1,000. For the best hybrid bikes, however, expect to pay as much as a used car (upwards of $4,000 or more). Just know that you don’t have to spend a small fortune to land a decent two-wheeler.

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

NCM Milano Electric Bike Review

When you purchase through links on our website, we may earn a commission. Affiliate disclosure.

NCM make high-quality, but affordable electric bikes, in this review I will explain why I believe the NCM Milano is the best electric commuter bike for the money.

About NCM Electric bikes

NCM electric bikes are owned by Leon Cycle GmbH a German company based in Hanover. Their e-bikes are designed in Germany and manufactured in China.

Specification

The centrepiece of this Electric bike is the X15 geared rear hub motor: This reliable 250W rear electric motor is known for its durability and high torque output, enabling the rider to maintain 15.5mph for long periods. There is no compromise in handling with the small motor centred in the rear hub.

NCM Milano electric bike photos of saddle, rear wheel and handlebar grips

48v13ah Lithium battery pack with USB charging port for mobile devices: Bulky battery packs take up a considerable amount of space, but the Milano’s battery is integrated into the down tube of the bike, keeping the weight low and central, which helps to improve stability. The manufacturers claimed a maximum range of 75 miles seems a little optimistic. The total battery energy capacity is 624wh (watt hours), so if you were consuming 20wh per mile, your range would be 31 miles. My friend owns one of these bikes and gets an average range of around 40-50 miles.

NCM milano electric bike view of battery

This bike is built for comfort:  The Schwalbe touring tyres, Suntour front suspension, adjustable handlebar stem, Selle Royal ergonomic grips and saddle with suspension post all make for an incredibly comfortable ride, even over longer distances. The Shimano 7-Speed gears, index perfectly – shifting is crisp and precise.

photos of the ncm milano tyres, display panel and front light

Fully functional control panel display: The Das-Kit LCD gives you all the information you would expect from an e-bike display. including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your ride.

NCM Milano electric bike lcd display

Excellent build quality: The NCM Milano is designed to look great but with no compromise on functionality and safety. The Tektro mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide adequate braking and the brake levers incorporate motor cut-off switches to ensure safe riding. The front and rear lights work off the battery and provide an extra level of safety – especially when riding in the winter. Internal cable routing finishes off the package neatly and not only looks great but protects the cables from the elements.

NCM milano electric bike dimensions

In my opinion, the NCM Milano electric bike offers exceptional value for money. It is unusual to see such a high-quality, well-made e-bike at this price point. What’s more the specification is excellent. The 48v13ah battery will certainly provide users with a realistic range of between 30-45 miles, or 31 miles using the 20wh per mile calculation. The claimed range of 75 miles may be a little optimistic for everyday use – it depends on how much you use the electric assist.

Tektro Mechanical disc brakes should provide adequate stopping power, while the Schwalbe tyres will provide a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

The attention to detail on this bike is great. The internally routed cables and the integrated battery pack make for a very clean finish, something you only usually find on more expensive e-bikes.

The fact that this bike has mudguards, a pannier rack, lights and a kickstand fitted, means that it is excellent for the daily commute in all weathers, or perfect for some weekend touring. The inclusion of a gel saddle and suspension seat post make this bike a truly comfortable and versatile all-rounder.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this definitely ticks all the right boxes

A friend of mine purchased one of these back in the Summer and he was kind enough to let me take it for a spin. I can honestly say it was a revelation! The gel saddle was incredibly comfortable and the small X15 hub motor was quiet and smooth. It produced a lot of power for such a small motor, making climbing the steep Cornish hills a doddle! The brakes and front suspension were more than adequate for the back lanes of Cornwall.

I really cannot recommend this bike enough. It has to be one of the best value e-bikes on the market at the moment, and the specification is great.

The great thing about this e-bike is that it is a true hybrid – it is equally comfortable being ridden on tarmac or unpaved surfaces. It can even be used for some light off-road riding.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this ticks all the right boxes.

Incidentally, NCM’s other 48v 250w bike is called the NCM Moscow , I will be reviewing this bike shortly. I have personally worked on and ridden a Moscow, and it is on par with the Milano for the ride and builds quality. It uses identical electric components but in a mountain bike-style frame.

boa taarde tenho uma biçicleta destas mas necessito de assistencia em Portugal. ela não arranca e não encontro uma ofecina que repare esta marca e com a garantia

Hi! Thank you for the review! I bought Milano a week ago, so far so good. I found the first assist speed to be stronger that I’d like it to be. Is there any way to rebalance those 1-6 modes within the given range, so it starts not as strong?

Don’t know if this is still open, but I really like the Milano plus, my only question, is how easy is it to remove the battery beneath that tube? Can it be done one handed? Cornwall my home!

Turning the key releases the battery catch, then you need to lift it slightly, move it forward and remove. I would imagine it’s possible to do it one handed, but it would be fairly tricky as the battery weighs around 3kg.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards, Tony

bike seems well make and sturdy but i find the tyres are so skinny that when you are on slightly uneven surfaces even at a slow pace & i’m talking in number 1 setting it is dangerous and you could so easy fall off on a slightly uneven footpath. It’s ok on even ground but i wouldn’t let my wife ride it. I’ll try putting new tyres on it & see how it goes or it will be sold. In comparison i have another basic ebike in the states which is so stable this is nowhere close to and ride all types of tracks on it which is also a similar style. i would say I’m disappointed in it so far & feel its an accident waiting to happen.

Excellent review Tony,

I went ahead and bought the Milano and I’ve been very impressed with it so far. I was wondering if you’d know whether the 48v 16ah battery for NCM bikes would be compatible with the Milano model? I can’t seem to find a 48v 13ah battery anywhere.

Many thanks, Andy

An NCM Milano Plus battery should fit straight in. The 16Ah battery is the same size and uses lithium cells with a higher energy density.

Salutations, Tony

I am seeing two different Milano Max models…N8C and N8R. They look exactly the same and with the same specifications. What is the difference?

I checked online for milano and price was 1189 Canadian dollar. On Monday I decided to buy it but unfortunately price went up to 1359$. I’m surprised as during holiday season everywhere else reducing their prices but your price was raised.
