The Vandals are a punk rock band from California, US who rose from the depths of the emerging local punk scene in 1980 and their combination of anti-political, wry humour and jovial nature shaped them into the archetypal So-Cal punk band inspiring the likes of The Offspring and blink-182.

Forming in 1980 with the original line-up consisted of: Jan Nils Ackerman (guitar), Steven Jenson (vocals), Steve Pfauter (bass) and Joe Escalante (drums), The Vandals surrounded by seminal punk bands like Social Distortion, Bad Religion and Descendants absorbed the emerging punk trend prevalent in the Southern Californian scene. What saw The Vandals distinguish themselves from the rest was their distinctive humour which they have maintained throughout their career.

In 1982 the band signed with Epitaph Records to release their debut EP “Peace Thru Vandalism” which took inspiration from some very real personal experiences apparent in tracks such as “Legend of Pat Brown” and “Pirate’s Life”. Integrating well into their live sets, the EP also featured future fan favourites as the release saw the band mark their territory. As The Vandals toured relentlessly in their local area, they soon built up a loyal following.

The Vandals appeared in director Penelope Spheeris’ 1984 film “Surburbia”, exploring the punk movement within suburban areas of California and the prominent youth culture of the 60’s and 70’s. Within the same year the band released their first full length “When in Rome Do as The Vandals” through National Trust Records as Pfauter announced his departure and was quickly replaced by Chalmer Lumery. A departure from their previous release, the band experimented with fusing several genre combinations such as “Mohawk Town” which blended punk rock with country twisted with their signature humour. With rising tension in the band down to personality clashes, Jenson left the band in the late 80’s and Dave Quakenbush from Falling Idols stepped in.

By the time The Vandals released their second album “Slippery When Ill” in 1989, the band had undergone more line-up changes. With Escalante moving from drums to bass and the welcome additions of Warren Fitzgerald on guitar and Josh Freese on drums, The Vandals had once again solidified their line up in the early 90’s.

The 90’s saw a revival of the Californian punk scene as it began infiltrating the mainstream headed by bands such as NOFX, Green Day and The Offspring. As The Vandals made their third release “Fear of a Punk Planet”, they soon found themselves deep within the scene as they appeared on radio stations and rock television shows with their first video “Pizza Train”.

In 1994, the band signed with The Offspring’s Dexter Holland’s imprint label Nitro Records to release the albums “Live Fast Diarrhea” (1995) and “The Quickening” (1996). As they continued touring relentless, The Vandals were eventually embraced by the Warped Tour culture. After the release of “The Quickening” Escalante and Fitzgerald set up Kung Fu Records initially to release the Assorted Jelly Beans’ “Riverside” album and soon the label became involved with the movie soundtrack for “Glory Daze”. The Vandals would also release the Christmas album “Oi to the World!” off Kung Fu at the end of 1996.

In 2000 the band released their last album with Nitro “Look What I Almost Stepped In” and now with Kung Fu Records having become more established, The Vandals signed with their own label where to this day they remain. Despite a string of lawsuits and several line-up changes, The Vandals have remained true to themselves, persevering and championing the DIY bands and cementing their precedence as one of the most seminal punk bands to emerge from that era.

Live reviews

The Vandals kick ass. Great band. Very funny too. So happy to see them on tour. The only problem was the venue. Pier 6 Pavilion has bolted seats all the way to the stage. Punk concerts need a mosh pit. This was like allowing someone to put their feet in the water, but not allowing any swimming. I hope to see them again when we can have a throw down and not be forced to bounce in one spot or stand with our thumb up our ass. The Vandals deserve a better venue. They are GREAT!

The Vandals

Headshot of The Vandals

The influence and power of The Vandals took a couple of years to solidify, but they didn’t care. Offering more wisecracks than angst, the band maintained a steadily growing following in the early-‘80s Southern California punk scene, happily gigging around town and even holding tongue-in-cheek fundraisers for what they deemed unworthy causes. Sticking to small and independent labels, their albums remained free of outside influences, save for fellow and preceding punk bands like The Descendents and Bad Religion. By the time punk experienced resurgence in the early-‘90s, The Vandals were veterans and released a new slew of albums full of their signature irreverence including The Quickening and Hitler Bad, Vandals Good .

When legendary California punk band The Vandals began recording Hitler Bad, Vandals Good in 1997, the group was coming off a wildly productive and exhausting run. In 1995 and 1996, they released three albums – Live Fast , Diarrhea , The Quickening , and Oi to the World! – an impressive run by any stretch, but the band was left craving more. The band signed to Nitro Records, founded by Dexter Holland of The Offspring , and as such, were thrust into the burgeoning Orange County and Inland Empire scene as mainstay stars alongside The Offspring, No Doubt , Social Distortion, and more.

While those groups were headlining stadiums, The Vandals were still opening shows and grinding on the tour circuit. Released in 1998, Hitler Bad, Vandals Good , became an inflection point for the band and an opportunity to assert themselves as an influential act in the scene. The album became their most successful to date, which bassist Joe Escalante attributed to Vandals member Warren Fitzgerald’s increased production chops, bigger studios, a larger label budget, and an increased focus on songwriting.

To mark the 25th-anniversary reissue of their influential album, Escalante discusses his pivot from corporate America as a network TV executive to punk rock stardom, opening for Pearl Jam and Hitler Bad, Vandals Good 25 years later.

Don’t drink the water: how the environmental movement shaped music, search and destroy: 11 rare singles from great lost punks.

Pre-order  Hitler Bad, Vandals Good .

Going into the recording process for Hitler Bad, Vandals Good, what was the band’s mindset? You were coming off three albums from 1995 and 1996.

Well, we had just released a bunch of records, like you said. I had quit my job as a network television executive to concentrate full-time on all this. Dexter Holland, from the Offspring, owned our label. He was paying us a salary in advance. We recouped all our advances, but we were getting a salary to quit our jobs and tour full-time. So I did that and then started Kung Fu records. I guess you do something; I can’t just be a bass player in an old punk band. We were pretty focused, and then Warren [Fitzgerald, guitarist] was getting better at producing. We knew we wanted to make a professional-sounding record, and I think it’s probably our best-produced record.

Do you think that reflects the popularity of it, too?

Yeah, it’s definitely the biggest-selling Vandals record there is. After that, we switched over to Kung Fu Records, and then our records didn’t sell as well, but also, the market was going down, so the records came close, but it was like, 1996 is the peak, and then, it kind of starts going down.

But if you did your work beginning in ‘94, you were grandfathered into this world, and you get to play a lot of festivals, like the Punk in Drublics, and these beer festivals, and the Flogging Molly Cruise, which we’ll do in November. We haven’t made a new record since 2003, which we’re happy with. We think we did plenty enough. If you want a punk album written by guys in their sixties, that’s on you.

Going into the studio, how much conversation was there around things you wanted to do differently than previous records? Or what were the goals, entering the studio with the record?

The goals were not to spend too much because it was high stakes at that time. Studios are wildly expensive, and the engineers are expensive, so that was hanging over our heads, spending someone else’s money. I remember Dexter got mad at us because we were spending too much money on catering.

You get that pressure, and we could see the punk market getting bigger. We could see it getting more profitable. We thought, “Wow, this could be the record that gets us to the level of where Rancid and NOFX and Bad Religion are. I think the material’s good enough.” That’s what we were thinking. “This is our best shot at getting to the next level.”

The Vandals - "My Girlfriend's Dead" Kung Fu Records

What was the punk scene in Orange County in ‘98 like?

The real energy was a little further east, in what is called the Inland Empire. We sold out shows three nights in a row at some place called the Showcase Theater in Corona. We had our resurgence at a place called Spanky’s in Riverside. During that time, Orange County bands like The Offspring, No Doubt, and Social Distortion were getting big, but they weren’t really playing a part of the Orange County scene, where there weren’t clubs to play at. In Orange County, it’s the House of Blues at Disneyland, and that’s it.

At that time, did you view yourselves on the same level as No Doubt? Or were you on a rung below, in your guys’ minds?

We were just picking up their scraps. They were taking us and NOFX to Europe. It was their first time there since we had gone in ’89. We were opening for No Doubt on an arena tour, which is something I never thought we would do.

I was an executive for CBS, and my boss let me go on tour with No Doubt. I just called on the phone to make all my deals. I negotiated with agents and had this big rig in the back of a van. That was our last van tour. Then we moved to a tour bus, and I was 33 on my first tour bus. That was a whole ’nother world.

So we’re in a tour bus, but we’re an opening band for Pearl Jam or the Offspring. We’re just an opening band on big tours, headlining clubs, and playing the main stage on the Warped Tour. That’s the scene.

How did the band’s sound translate to arena shows?

A typical scenario would be that No Doubt’s security guy would go into the audience, find the Vandals fans, and say, “While the Vandals play, you can go up to the stage.” We’d have a little pit in the front of the stage. So many people come up to me to this day and say that their first concert was a No Doubt concert. We were the first band they saw, the first band they ever saw in their life.

We had a little pit and would tailor our show to ingratiate ourselves to the arena people coming in with their nachos and looking for their seats. So that’s what we got pretty good at in terms of winning them over. It’s like, “Hey, do you like this? Or you don’t like this, or how about some of this?” By the end, they were going, “Well, I really like that band, and I’m sorry for hating on them when they started.”

Back to your work with Dexter Holland. Was it strange having a friendship with your label boss? Did that ever get strained?

A little bit, because he held all the purse strings, but we would treat him professionally. I came from a professional and corporate world, so I treated everything like that.

Reflecting on an album from 25 years ago, do you like looking back on it, or is it weird to revisit a different time in your life?

It’s a little weird because I’m always thinking, ‘Should I have quit my corporate job?’ The guy that replaced me now makes eight million a year at another place. So I’m always reading about this guy. Well, two people replaced me. One guy makes eight million a year, and the other guy, someone, told me he looks like death. So I got out; who knows what would have happened.

It’s hard to keep facing that, “Ah, did you make the right decisions?” But with revisiting this record, it’s a quality record; it’s our best record, and it’s our best-selling record. So at least we’re talking about something we can all be proud of.

Euro-Barge

The juxtaposition of being a corporate leader and then going into a punk band is…unique. What did your peers say at the time?

Oh, they still talk about it. My sister said last Saturday, “Do you ever think about what your life would be like if you didn’t quit CBS?” I’m like, “Oh, jeez,” and then I have to justify it to her. I go, “Yeah, but then, I wouldn’t have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan and toured with Pearl Jam and No Doubt and all these things; I wouldn’t have met my wife.” I’m sitting here on the beach. It’s hard to cry about it.

Kung Fu Records was successful because I ran it like a grown-up company. It was always a corporate environment, not a hippie fest. There wasn’t any anti-corporate culture. The books are solid; everyone’s paid. We have $250,000 royalty software that pays royalties twice a year, on time. So that training was beneficial. And other labels, I could name names, but some of them are just a mess. I’m proud of the way we have done things.

THE FRONT ROW with MARK NELKE: Vandals: The receivers, the portal, the locals

MARK NELKE/Press Left tackle Alex Green (54) blocks Malakai Williams (15) during Idaho's spring football game Friday night at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

Jordan Dwyer served as a reminder Friday night that the Idaho Vandals still have some pretty good receivers this year, after their three top receivers moved on after last season.

All-American Hayden Hatten, Idaho’s career leader in touchdown receptions, could have returned for a fifth season in Moscow, but opted for the NFL.

Jermaine Jackson, an exciting kick returner and receiver, exhausted his eligibility.

And Terez Traynor chose to transfer to Tulane for his final college season.

Dwyer caught five passes for 94 yards, including a leaping catch on a 50-yard scoring play, in Idaho’s spring football game Friday night at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

“I feel like a lot of people think, losing JJ and losing Hayden, losing Terez, we did lose a lot of talent,” said Dwyer, a redshirt sophomore. “But we got some guys to come in here and step up and pick up where we left off.”

Dwyer showed signs as a true freshman in 2022, catching a touchdown pass in the season opener at Washington State. An injury cut short his first season at Idaho, and he finished with 12 catches for 136 yards and two TDs.

Last year, playing time was scarce with Hatten, Jackson and Traynor around. Dwyer finished with 20 catches for 328 and four TDs.

“I took a lot of things from Hayden and JJ over the last couple of years, but it’s amazing to have that role this year and have a bigger role on this team,” the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Dwyer said. “I’m excited and I’m ready for it.”

“He (Dwyer) told me today; I’ve got to get in better shape,” third-year Idaho football coach Jason Eck said. “Hayden Hatten played 75 snaps a game and almost never game out. He had to be in elite physical condition to do that. … I told him (Dwyer) he has to have a good summer conditioning, so he can be that No. 1 receiver that doesn’t come off the field.”

IN THE  old days after spring practice was completed, coaches could take a deep breath, relax, and come back in a few weeks and start preparing for preseason camp.

Not any more.

Not with the transfer portal.

“It’s a goofy time of year,” Eck said.

There’s a spring transfer portal which began April 16 and runs through April 30 (Tuesday).

He said this past week, two starters reached out to him to see if he was in his office.

“And when that happens this time of year, your heart sinks,” Eck said. “Right away you think (the worst).”

As it turned out, one player wanted to let him know he had a cousin that was interested in walking on at Idaho. Another wanted to make sure his flight coming back to Moscow from home was booked on the right day, so he didn’t miss practice.

“I’m already crafting in my mind what I’m going to say to this kid when he tells me he wants to transfer,” Eck said.

“I’m not going to sleep really good until May 1 is done, because then we’re out of the woods and we know who we have for next year,” Eck added. “But I think we have a great thing going; obviously everyone has their own options now. We have to make sure they know we have a great thing going and they’re a big part of it. But we’ll see.”

On the flip side, Eck and his assistants have to be ready to recruit in the portal, should more players leave — Idaho lost nearly a dozen to the portal in the weeks following the end of last season, which ended with the Vandals in the FCS playoffs for the second straight year.

“Kids will reach out to you,” Eck said. “Our practices go two weeks after the portal window (opens), and there’s been some pretty good players that have reached out and said, ‘We want to come,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I have a scholarship for you.’ So we may move up spring ball next year just to help with that.”

THE VANDALS appeal to North Idaho fans more when they’re winning, obviously, but also when local kids are playing.

Zach Johnson, a redshirt freshman from Lake City, had 2.5 sacks for the Black team, comprised of starters and key reserves. He came to Idaho as a linebacker, but is also making a niche as an edge rusher.

Now, the Idaho coaches need to figure out how to use him best.

“Whatever we do, we have to get him rushing the passer more,” Jason Eck said. “If he’s in some sub packages, we can’t wait until third and long, maybe second and long; if they’re going to throw it more, we’ve got to get him in. He’s doing a solid job at linebacker, but he could really be a difference maker at end.”

Also cool to see redshirt freshman Alex Green (left tackle) playing left tackle for the White team, comprised of second- and third-teamers — and also cool to see him blocking Johnson on the edge on a few plays.

Other locals also saw action on the White team, including true freshman Owen Foreman (Lakeland), who kicked off; redshirt freshman Trevor Miller (Post Falls), who played some at edge rusher and some at tight end; and redshirt freshman Weston Benefield (Sandpoint), who saw plenty of action at linebacker.

Linebacker Wayne Queen (Lake City) and defensive lineman Matyus McLain (Priest River), both redshirt freshman, also suited up for the White team.

Young Idaho offense appears ready to keep Vandals in Big Sky contention

Idaho quarerback Jack Layne, right, scrambles under pressure from defensive lineman Trevor Miller during the annual spring game on Friday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. (Geoff Crimmins/The Spokesman-Review)

MOSCOW, Idaho — Coming out of spring football, Idaho head coach Jason Eck is no doubt pleased his starters look to be worthy successors to the team that reached the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs last year.

Also, in 15 workouts and the spring game, no Vandals suffered any season-ending injuries.

But heading into summer, Eck is still waiting for a couple of shoes to drop.

For one, like all of his contemporaries coaching college football, Eck is on pins and needles as the volatile roster churn of the transfer portal plays out for the next few weeks.

The second issue is unique to Idaho this year. A Moscow Police investigation into a fight at a party in February that left a University of Idaho student injured, allegedly at the hands of a Vandals player, and that prompted a Vandals booster group in southern Idaho to cancel an annual fundraising event, is still ongoing as the spring semester nears a close.

“It is kind of hanging over our heads,” Eck said after the spring game Friday. “I would like to get it resolved.”

As a football coach, Eck said he is wired to come to grips with issues and settle them expeditiously. He expressed frustration but not criticism over the pace of the police inquiry.

“I’m not an investigator,” Esk said. “So far, no one has been charged. I hope it gets resolved soon.”

The portal cost the Vandals All-Big Sky Conference linebacker Paul Moala a couple of seasons ago after Moala went through spring workouts with Idaho then abruptly transferred to Georgia Tech. Despite a couple of harrowing instances for the coach this spring, the roster remains intact, except for a walk-on player who decided to seek a lower division of college football to get playing time. Eck understands that.

“I had two starters this week say, ‘Coach Eck, are you going to be in your office?’ … This time of the year, your heart sinks. One of them said, ‘My cousin wants to walk on,’ and asked about that. The other said, “I want to make sure my flight is right (returning to Moscow after an end of the semester break in May). (So far), I hope we have everybody back.”

The portal, of course, works both ways. Because of that, Eck said he may move spring ball to earlier in the semester next year, so Idaho players contemplating leaving can make that decision sooner and provide flexibility to the coaching staff.

“I have had pretty good players reach out and say, ‘I’d really like to come,’ ” Eck said. “But I have to tell them, ‘I don’t know if I have a scholarship for you.’ We may move up spring ball next year.”

The spring game Friday, won 35-21 by the starters and key backups over the second and third-team reserves, despite spotting them a 14-point lead, showed why the No. 1s are the No. 1s.

The first-team defense, especially, overwhelmed the reserves. Their offensive line could not keep the starters out of the backfield. The starters amassed 10.5 sacks, led by linebacker and edge rusher Zach Johnson and defensive lineman Aamari Notice with 2.5 each. Linebacker Jaxton Eck also made an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

The starting offense, despite having no seniors, looks like it can replace All-America and All-Big Sky Conference receivers Hayden Hatten and Jermaine Jackson, who graduated; All-Big Sky running back Anthony Woods, now at Utah; and Jerry Rice Award winner, All-Big Sky and third-team All-America quarterback Gevani McCoy, now at Oregon State.

Redshirt sophomore Jack Layne led the starters, completing 17 of 26 passes for 186 yards, with one touchdown pass and one TD run. Deshaun Buchanan, with six carries for 31 yards; Nate Thomas, five carries for 29 yards; and Elisha Cummings, six carries for 12 yards with a 23-yard TD reception, showed the running game, particularly between the tackles, remains productive. Jordan Dwyer, five receptions for 94 yards with TD; Mark Hamper, three catches for 48 yards; and tight ends Alex Moore, five catches for 37 yards and Mason Mini, two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown, left little doubt the Vandals still have a passing game.

Dwyer’s TD, a 46-yard strike from No. 2 quarterback Jack Wagner, was impressive, since he had to split double coverage to make the reception.

As the likely successor to Hatten and Jackson, Dwyer said, “I’m ready for it.”

Dwyer last year was used to getting about 30 snaps a game. Eck said Dwyer told him at the spring game, “I’ve got to get in better shape.”

Twerking vandals cause $25K in damage to California business

G LENDORA, Calif. ( KTLA ) – A San Gabriel Valley business is struggling after vandals broke into their parking lot, spent some time twerking atop their vehicles and caused thousands of dollars in damage over the weekend.

The break-in at Pink Sponge Home Cleaning service in Glendora occurred in the early morning hours of April 20.

Surveillance footage of the rooftop parking lot showed at least three teens wreaking havoc, one who was blasting off a fire extinguisher and another two who were twerking on the hood of one of the company’s bright pink fleet of 25 Volkswagen Bugs.

“They kicked in every headlight they could,” Jennifer Ahlgrim with Pink Sponge Cleaning told KTLA’s Sandra Mitchell. “They pulled down the windows so hard, they broke the regulators. They carved on the hoods of cars.”

The teens caused some $25,000 in damage on their rampage and left a giant mess.

“They tore open a door and threw products over the side of the building. It was disgusting,” Ahlgrim said.

According to the company, which prides itself on giving back to the community, 18 of their vehicles were badly damaged.

“I couldn’t understand how someone could do something like this to a company that’s trying to do good,” Ahlgrim said. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

One of the teens, a 15-year-old from La Verne, is now in custody in connection with the break-in. Police said that gang symbols carved onto some of the cars led them to the juvenile suspect.

Authorities added that they have the 15-year-old’s cell phone and are hoping to use it to find the two teen girls who were involved in the break-in.

“We built everything from the ground up, so to see our hard work vandalized was just completely disheartening,” Ahlgrim explained. “Our Pink Sponge team is strong, but it’s been very sad.”

The co-founder of the company told KTLA that their insurance claim was denied because they had been vandalized before.

Three Vandals and two Broncos earn NFL opportunities

Four of which are undrafted free agent deals, one is a minicamp invite..

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Boise State football saw its NFL Draft pick selection streak snapped on Saturday, however a couple of Broncos as well as some other players across Idaho have landed NFL opportunities.

Broncos running back George Holani signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Seattle Seahawks in the hours following the draft, and offensive lineman Cade Beresford is also heading to Seattle on a minicamp invite.

And don’t worry Vandals fans, you had some signings as well, one in the form of star receiver Hayden Hatten who is also heading to the Seahawks on an undrafted free agent deal. His twin brother, Hogan, was also signed but as a long snapper by the Detroit Lions. It will certainly be a party in the Hatten house tonight.

And last, but certainly not least Idaho wide receiver Jermaine Jackson signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Unfortunately, no Idaho State Bengals have signed pro deals or been invited to NFL minicamps yet.

Branching Out

An aptitude for math and science led EmmaRae Parsons to consider pursuing a degree in civil engineering. When a high school teacher asked why she was interested in that topic she realized she didn’t have an answer.

Growing up surrounded by farms and ranches in the small rural town of Arco and participating in 4-H horse and sheep projects had given Parsons an appreciation for agriculture, but she hadn’t considered a career in the industry. Friends and neighbors encouraged her to explore options offered in the University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

“I was always passionate about being outside and I love the people I grew up with and a lot of them are farmers and ranchers,” she said. “Most of those that had gone to college were Vandals and were very passionate about it.”

Parsons discovered the biotechnology and plant genomics  degree at U of I and her mother encouraged her to try it out, combining her skills in math and science with her interest in agriculture.

Learning Through Experience

Once Parsons arrived on campus she began working as a research assistant in Professor Fangming Xiao’s plant molecular biology lab where she was able to work on genotyping projects and learned basic procedures such as PCR and tissue culture.

She also decided to add a second degree in agricultural economics: agribusiness emphasis  and completed a directed study project with Assistant Professor Alexander Maas. She learned to use R, a programming language for statistical computing and data visualization, to plot a map with latitude and longitude, creating buffers to figure out crop mixes for dairies and how it changes the further you move out in the buffer.

Parsons was encouraged by fellow students and faculty to apply to two prestigious programs while at U of I, the USDA Future Leaders in Agriculture program and the American Society of Agronomy’s (ASA) Greenfield Scholar program.

The Future Leaders program featured a weeklong tour of Washington, D.C., including attendance at the Agricultural Outlook Forum, the USDA’s largest and premier annual gathering. Parsons was one of 20 students selected for the program and was able to meet U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and World Agricultural Outlook Board Chairperson Mark Jekanowski.

Parsons was one of four students selected for the Greenfield Scholars program in 2023. The program provides a mentor and allows students to attend the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America’s annual meeting. Parsons also joined other Greenfield Scholars on a trip to Washington, D.C. where she met with Idaho senators and representatives to advocate for agriculture.

“I loved going to D.C. and meeting with staffers to advocate. Most of them were Vandals so it was really cool,” she said.

Despite her busy schedule, Parsons also found time to join the U of I Polo Club, competing on the varsity team for the past two years.

“I love getting to ride and being around fellow horse people,” she said. “When the team is really meshing together, that’s such a fun thing. I was a runner in high school and didn’t do team sports, so this was a new thing for me.”

Parsons will graduate in May 2024 and begin her career as a crop insurance analyst trainee with AgWest Farm Credit based in Twin Falls. Her decision to pursue the agribusiness side of her degrees came after a summer internship with the company.

“With my experience with R, I did quite a few projects last summer testing different systems we were trying to develop which was really fun,” she said. “I was a little sad to give up the plant sciences, but it came down to location and company culture and the people I worked with made a huge difference.”

The educational experiences and opportunities to grow as a leader at U of I have helped set Parsons up for success. Looking back, she’s happy she took the advice of Vandals in her community to attend U of I.

“It is a family. You find your people that you really love to be around and it’s just a huge support system,” she said.

Hammond also reported vandalism at park near its city hall.

Vandals used white spray paint to deface the life-size bronze statue of legendary Gary mayor Richard Gordon Hatcher late Wednesday or early Thursday morning, officials said.

Doors on City Hall were also spray-painted.

Mayor Eddie Melton said police were investigating the incident as workers began cleaning up the statue and the exterior of City Hall, 401 Broadway. No arrests have been made. Melton said there are security cameras at City Hall.

A spokeswoman for Melton said the statue’s head had been spray painted and workers covered the statue.

“It’s a disgrace that anyone would come to disrespect City Hall, a place where we conduct business and serve the people of Gary, every day,” Melton said in a statement.

“It’s even more shameful that the vandals dishonored Mayor Richard G. Hatcher, a national historical figure who fought for the people of Gary and the marginalized and oppressed around the world,” he said.

Former Gary Mayor Richard Hatcher speaks during a meeting of all living former mayors of Gary at Indiana University Northwest on Jan. 9, 2019.

State Rep. Ragen Hatcher, D-Gary, said Thursday her family wanted to wait to make a statement until more information was available.

Ragen Hatcher and her family led the campaign to erect the statue in 2019, along with then-mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. The city’s Redevelopment Commission provided about $70,000 for the bronze statue by sculptor Gary Tillery, an artist with the Fine Arts Studio of Robtblatt & Amrany.

Tillery said he researched Hatcher’s career and many photographs before capturing Hatcher’s likeness in a suit and vest.

Richard Hatcher, his family and supporters attended the Oct. 9, 2019, unveiling of the statue that sits on a limestone base on the south side of City Hall. It faces a grassy park-like area where the 14-story Sheraton Hotel, built under Hatcher’s administration, once stood.

After the unveiling, Hatcher told a reporter: “I think it’s awesome that anyone would think I was worthy of the statue to begin with. It’s beautiful.”

Hatcher died two months later on Dec. 13 at age 86.

For weeks and months after the unveiling, residents stopped by to see the statue and take photographs.

A Democrat and former Gary city councilman, Hatcher rose to power in the 1960s at the height of the Civil Rights era. He became the country’s first Black mayor, along with Cleveland mayor Carl Stokes in 1968. Hatcher served five terms in office.

Under Hatcher, the city built the Genesis Convention Center, the Adam Benjamin Metro Center and Hudson-Campbell fitness center.

Hatcher also organized the first National Black Political Convention, held at West Side High School, in 1972.

The basketball courts at Martin Luther King Jr. park are closed in the wake of two shootings at the Hammond park on Thursday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said in a social media post that benches at Martin Luther King Jr. Park were vandalized Wednesday night for the second time in two weeks. A photo shows the tops of concrete benches were removed, causing him to close the basketball courts indefinitely or until the vandals have been apprehended by Hammond police.

“What kind of person would destroy a park named after a great man like Dr. King,” said McDermott.

He said the recent damage cost thousands of dollars in damage, although he didn’t give a specific figure.

“We are sorry that the people who use this park peacefully are being penalized for the ones who vandalize it, but we can’t condone the destruction of park property. This park in particular cost the Hammond taxpayers millions to improve. These perpetrators must be brought to justice before these facilities are reopened.”

The park, at 1200 Highland St., was also closed and basketball nets were removed in August 2022 after a fatal shooting.

In March 2023, Darren Ferguson plead guilty to fatally shooting Jullius Brooks, 39, of Hammond, after Brooks allegedly assaulted Ferguson’s 10-year-old son during a pickup basketball game. Ferguson was sentenced to 15 years in prison as part of a plea deal.

In a phone interview, McDermott said he doesn’t think the Hammond park vandalism and vandalism at Gary City Hall were related.

“We’re pretty sure we know who did ours. This is a weird time in America,” he said. “Obviously, the last time something happened it was violence.. this wasn’t of that magnitude, but we wanted to shut it down and get the neighbors’ attention.”

McDermott said police received tips from neighbors who live near the park in the city’s East Hammond community. The park is adjacent to Hammond City Hall.

“It’s a park I see every day,” McDermott said.

He said the city spent about $5 million in park improvements in 2019.
