Virtual Venice: How To Tour Venice From Home

grand canal in Venice

Here’s my armchair travel guide to Venice Italy. Via 15 virtual tours, you can visit Venice’s famous landmarks, must see attractions, and world class museums from your couch or computer. You can feel like you’re in Venice even if you’re not.

La Serrenissima is one of the world’s most beautiful and captivating cities. No other place looks anything like it. It’s a magical floating city of grand palazzos, golden domes, picturesque canals, and labyrinthian lanes.

venezia virtual tour

Venice has suffered lately — from overtourism, flooding, and now the world wide lockdown. If, like me, you had a trip to Italy planned and canceled, you may be feeling disappointed.

But thanks to the wonders of armchair travel, you can now take a virtual cyber vacation to Venice. To be sure, it’s not nearly as fascinating as the real thing. But you can see the iconic place in a quiet and peaceful state, without crowd or queues. Perhaps the Venetians prefer it this way.

How to Enjoy A Virtual Venice Vacation Online

1. google earth | google maps | youtube.

Google Earth and Google Maps are perfect for an overview of Venice. These sites enable you to see different digital views of Venice – aerial views, street views, and panoramic views. You can navigate your way around online using your keyboard or mouse. In addition, you can explore Venice here or take this 360 tour .

There’s also a brilliant live webcam on YouTube here . It shows Venice shut down, eerily quiet and empty. YouTube’s “I Love You Venice” channel plays live footage to classical music. It claims to have the “most beautiful live cam” of Venice.

National Geographic also has a lovely 4 minute video about Venice.

Claude Monet, Palazzo da Mula Venice, 1908

2. Google Arts & Culture: Virtual Tours

Google Arts & Culture is a brilliant initiative for the travel starved. Google has partnered with museums and institutions around the world to bring masterpieces to you in high resolution or present thematic tours of important art and architecture.

If you’re a culture vulture, it’s one of the best online best resources. In addition to the specific Venice sites, Google Arts & Culture also has an online exhibition from the National Gallery in London of Impressionist Claude Monet’s paintings of Venice.

the Doge's Palace in Venice

3. Doge’s Palace

The Doge’s Palace or Palazzo Ducale is Venice’s most iconic landmark. Set in St. Mark’s Square, the palace is the very symbol of Venice. This pink and white marble Gothic-Renaissance building was the official residence of the doges, rulers of Venice for more than 1,000 years.

Now, from your armchair, you can explore the architecture of the building, the grand interior, and some of the fabulous Renaissance and Venetian art. The must see masterpieces are Veronese’s Rape of Europe and The Triumph of Venice, paintings and ceilings by Tintoretto, and Tiepolo’s Neptune Bestowing Gifts upon Venice .

You can tour the Doge’s Palace virtually on Google Arts & Culture and take a 360 tour of the exterior and tour the interior here .

the facade of St. Mark's Basilica

4. Saint Mark’s Basilica

St. Mark’s is one of the world’s most ornate churches, designed in an Italo-Byzantine style when Venice was a wealthy military power. It’s right on the Piazza San Marco and connected to the Doge’s Palace. The basilica used to be a smaller chapel for the doge.

It’s called St. Mark because it holds the body, a relic, of St. Mark. St. Mark was hugely important as one of the authors of the New Testament. Venetian merchants actually stole the relic from Alexandria in 828.

St. Mark’s is constructed in a Greek cross design, with each arm equal. The interior is like a golden jewel box. The walls are covered with mosaics, 40,000 square feet in total.

You can take a virtual tour of St. Mark’s here and listen to a Smarthistory lecture here .

Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal, home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

5. Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Ah, this is my favorite museum in Venice. And it’s one of the finest modern art museums in the world. It was founded by Peggy Guggenheim, an eccentric American heiress with a nose for spotting talent.

The museum is housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an 18th century palace on the Grand Canal. Peggy purchased it from another eccentric European personality, Maria Louisa Casati.

Peggy’s collection includes works from the major movements of Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism, and Abstract Expressionism. There’s an entire room dedicated to her beloved Pollack. You can see works by Picasso , de Chirico, Kandinsky, Miro, Klee, Ernst, Magritte, de Kooning, Dali, and Calder.

a room in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum displaying Picasso's Poet on a Beach and an Alexander Calder mobile

The Schulhof Collection, also on site, is also impressive. It’s housed in a wing of the museum called the Barchessa. The collection features post-war American and European art, from the period following Guggneheim’s works.

The focus is on minimalism, pop art, and post-painterly abstraction. It includes works by Frank Stella, Cy Twombley, Ellsworth Kelly, Jasper Johns, and Eduardo Chillada.

You can tour the Peggy Guggenheim Collection online here . Here’s my complete guide to Peggy Guggenheim Collection .

Palazzo Rezzonico

6. Palazzo Rezzonico

Also located on the Grand Canal in the Doursoduro area, Palazzo Rezzonico is a shrine to 18th century Venetian artists. This period is sometimes called the “Age of Decadence.” You’ll find paintings and frescoed ceilings by Tiepolo, Longhi, Canaletto, Guardi, Molinari, and Lazzarini.

You can take a virtual tour of Ca’ Rezzonico here . You can also take a Google Street View tour of the lovely palace and admire the beautiful furnishings, the paintings, the Throne Room, and the Grand Ballroom.

The palazzo also has an online exhibition on Canaletto, a painter renowned for his oil paintings of Venetian canals.

Gustav Klimt, Judith II, 1909

7. Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art

Ca’ Pesaro is a spectacular 18th century Venetian palace in Venice’s Santa Croce area. While not as renowned as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Ca’ Pesaro is real a hotspot for modern art lovers.

It has a fabulous collection, spanning several movements from the 19th and 20th centuries with an especially rich collection of expressionists and surrealists.

The collection includes art works by works by Kandinsky, Chagall, de Chirico, Ernst, Matisse, Miro and Gustav Klimt . A highlight is Klimt’s Judith II .

You can take a virtual tour here .

Palazzo Fortuny

8. Palazzo Fortuny

Palazzo Fortuny is an intimate personal museum to check out. It was founded by the Fortuny family, who manned a successful company producing silk and velvet fabrics.

The visually stunning museum is filled with eclectic art — printed fabrics, drawings, and sculptures, paintings, and photography. They’re all works created by Mariano Fortuny in the early 1900’s.

You can take a virtual tour here . Touring virtually will quell the desire to reach out and touch the goods on display.

9. Museum of Natural History | Museo di Storia Naturale di

This little museum is housed in the Fontego dei Turchi Palace on the Grand Canal. Its collection focuses on the natural history of the lagoon that surrounds the city. The museums conducts and coordinates scientific research.

Inside, you’ll find dinosaur skeletons, big game taxidermy, fossils, insects, shrunken heads, etc. It’s a perfect place for a history or science buff. You can tour the museum online at Google Arts & Culture here . You can take a Google Street View tour here and here .

Leonard da Vinci, Vitruvian Man, 1487

10. Gallerie dell’Accademia

Located on the south bank of the Grand Canal, the must visit Gallerie dell’Accademia is housed in the former Santa Maria della Carità church and convent complex. It was built, in part, by famed Italian Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio.

The Accademia was founded as an art school in 1750. In 1807, a conquering Napoleon opened the collection to the public.

The 24 galleries of the Academia are home to astounding artworks by pre-19th century Venetian artists. The Accademia boasts masterpieces by the likes of Canaletto, da Vinci, Veronese, Bellini, and Titian. This is where you can find Leonardo’s famous Vitruvian Man .

You can tour the Accademia virtually here or on YouTube here .

hall in the Correr Museum in Venice

11. Correr Museum | Museo Correr

This little museum is dedicated to the history of Venice. The sumptuously decorated rooms include an opulent ballroom, a Napoleonic loggia, a throne room, and a dining room. All have beautiful frescoed ceilings.

Amid the ornate rooms, you’ll find beautiful Neo-Classical sculptures by one of my favorites, Antonio Canova. His themes were love and beauty. The museum also has an outstanding art collection, spanning the earliest days of Venetian painting up to the 16th century.

You can take a virtual tour of the Correr Museum on Google Arts & Culture.

gondola at the Rialto Bridge

12. Ride A Gondola Online

You can even take a gondola ride from home. Geneeo, a tech company, filmed a 20 minute virtual gondola ride through Venice’s canals with 360 views. Sip a limoncello and enjoy the beautiful views here .

If you’re ever in Venice, you can also learn how to row a gondola yourself. I did that the last time I was in Venice and it was fabulous.

colorful houses on the island of Murano

13. Island of Murano Tour

Murano is a colorful island located in the Venice lagoon. It’s a wonderful day trip from Venice proper. Murano is renowned for its exquisite glass products and glass blowing techniques.

Google Arts & Culture has a page devoted to Murano. You can learn about the ancient art of glass blowing  here . You can also visit the Museo del Vetro online . The museum is devoted entirely to glass, from Roman to contemporary times.

You can even purchase authentic Murano glass souvenirs online from your couch or computer.

venezia virtual tour

14. Thirsting In Place: the Aperol Spritz

A more unique and fun virtual tour is to make an Aperol Spritz, or Spritz Veneziano, online with Venice local Valerio. Venice lays claim to have invented the spicy European cocktail, which is a mixture of prosecco, Aperol, and soda water. The cocktail became wildly popular in the US starting in 2018.

If you want to learn how to make the aperitif and see lovely views of Murano at the same time, you can book an online course with Valerio here .

Grand Canal in Venice

15. Films Set in Venice

Venice is an incredibly cinematic place, with its ancient crumbling palazzos and winding gondola-studded canals. Cue up these films for an armchair glimpse of Venice:

Death in Venice (thriller based on Thomas Mann’s famous book)

Dangerous Beauty (period piece about courtesans in Renaissance Venice)

The Italian Job (thieves team together to steal gold)

The Tourist (Johnny Depp in a romantic thriller)

Moonraker (James Bond film with a gondola chase scene)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (third installment of the series)

Tour the new Carnival Venezia

Recently we had the chance to tour the newly introduced carnival venezia. i took this opportunity to document her public areas for you all to see..

The Carnival Venezia started life out as the Costa Venezia for Carnival Corp.’s Italian-themed line Costa Cruises which caters primarily to the Italian cruise market but also the larger European market as well. The ship was originally ordered as part of a larger much larger deal between Carnival Corp and Fincantieri which contained ships for Carnival, Costa, and Princess. The design of the Venezia is based on sister brand, Carnival Cruise Line’s, Vista(2016)-class ships. These include the Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon, and Carnival Panorama. There’s also a fifth ship built after the Costa Venezia called the Costa Firenze.

The 135,225gt ship, launched in March 2019, is technically slightly larger than her aforementioned Carnival siblings due in large part to the enclosed main pool area. This is a common theme amongst Costa ships as they routinely sail the Mediterranean, as well as other regions, year-round.

What’s unique about the Venezia was that originally, she was in fact intended to cruise year-round in China. This was back in the mid-2010s when the next up-and-coming cruise market was going to be China. One part of Carnival Corp.’s strategy was starting a dedicated expansion to the region by utilizing Costa’s ships and starting up Costa Cruises’ Asia. This was to be a sub-brand within the larger Costa Crociere S.p.A. with operations specifically for Asian-based guests sailing on dedicated ships year-round.

As you may have noted above, she debuted just in time for the  2019-20 Covid-19 Pandemic  and the subsequent global temporary shutdown of the cruise industry. Having sailed in the region for less than a year, she was brought back home to Italy and when the industry slowly started back up, she sailed a few Mediterranean routes before going back into layup. The decision was made to transfer her and her sister, Costa Firenze, as well as fleetmate Costa Luminosa, to the Carnival Cruise Line brand as the regions and markets that those supported would be more popular than Asia or the Med.

And that’s how the Venezia joined the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet.

VIEW CARNIVAL VENEZIA DECK PLANS

As with all our reviews, we start out with the obligatory photos. These usually give us the general vibe around the vessel. It’s a good indicator of the décor and motif throughout.

Elevator lobby.

venezia virtual tour

Stairwell artwork.

venezia virtual tour

Random hallway.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 01 is all cabins.

Deck 02 is all cabins.

Deck 03 starts the public areas. At the very front of the deck are the dedicated teen and tweens area, Circle C and Club Carnival.

venezia virtual tour

This forward area is accessible via this double sided staircase.

venezia virtual tour

Aft of the forward cabins and hallway, you are at the bottom floor of the Piazza San Marco. The stunning three story main plaza on the ship is inspired heavily by the real thing in Venice. Around the area is the Guest services on starboard and the shore excursion desk on port. At the center of the Piazza is the atrium bar.

venezia virtual tour

Aft of the piazza is the first of two main restaurants, Marco Polo Restaurant.

venezia virtual tour

This single deck restaurant is designed with many smaller intimate table areas.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 3 is one of those split decks on Carnival Ships. This is the unique layout whereby in order to reach the aft area, you need to go a deck above or below and then head aft to go back to this deck. The reason for this is that the galley is in the center part and is not accessible to passengers.

At the very aft of the deck is the Canal Grande Restaurant. Inspired by the canals of Venice, it features an actual gondola in the center of the restaurant. As with the other restaurant, it features many secluded, intimate tables throughout.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 04 is where the lifeboats are located. This means there are not many rooms with views throughout it. At the very front is the bottom level of the main theater Theatro Rosso. This multipurpose venue changes through the cruise from the main lounge, to comedy club, to night club.

venezia virtual tour

Aft of the lounge is the second deck of Piazza San Marco. Surrounding the atrium are several Fun Shops as well as the Cherry on Top candy store.

venezia virtual tour

Walking though that is the Venezia Casino. As with the Vista-class vessels there is an enclosed atrium here to the deck above. This way the smell of smoke from the casino is vented straight out. As she was originally intended for Asia, on the port side there is a casino annex that was intended to the a VIP/high rollers private casino.

venezia virtual tour

Walking though that area is a smaller promenade featuring the Heroes sports bar. Instead of being themed after a particular sport or individual team, this area is dedicated to members that served in the armed forces. More service men and women cruise Carnival than any other line.

venezia virtual tour

Past that is the art gallery.

venezia virtual tour

The last stop on the lower promenade is the Limelight Lounge. This venue is the traditional alternate lounge that usually is found at the very aft of some older classed vessels.

venezia virtual tour

At the very back is the top level of the Canal Grande Restaurant. This gives us a wider view of what the main restaurant looks like.

venezia virtual tour

All of deck 05 is surrounded by an outdoor promenade called the Lanai. Even the very front is accessible and provides an amazing view looking over the bow. Throughout the deck several venues feature inside seating as well as outside seating on the Lanai. Throughout this tour, I’ll include photos of those unique areas as we enter each room.

venezia virtual tour

As an overview of the Lanai, it protrudes out over the side of the vessel and is not covered by any of the above superstructure. What this area actually is, is the overhang for the lifeboats which are mounted underneath. As the ship features larger than the normal 150-person lifeboats found on almost every other vessel, they must be mounted with no obstruction underneath so they drop right down, into the water. We’ve seen this feature on other ships of the AIDA brand, NCL, and MSC. Carnival debuted this feature with the Carnival Dream in 2008.

venezia virtual tour

Inside at the very front of the deck is the top level of the Theatro Rosso.

venezia virtual tour

Past that area is the top level of the Piazza as well as additional Fun Shops surrounding it.

venezia virtual tour

Past that is a collection of restaurants and a bar. This is where the Piano bar is.

venezia virtual tour

The Asian Teppanyaki restaurant and Sushi restaurant, Bonsai, are found here. As is Carnival’s signature steakhouse Fahrenheit 555.

venezia virtual tour

At the center is Amari bar that starts the upper promenade.

venezia virtual tour

Past there is the Frizzante Bar and entrance to the new Italian restaurant Il Viaggio.

venezia virtual tour

Past that is the pixels photo gallery.

venezia virtual tour

The promenade ends at the Gondola Lounge which features one of the main entrances to the Lanai and is intended to be a multipurpose style venue with bar and café in the area. As well as an outdoor grill.

venezia virtual tour

The aft end of the deck is the Carnevale Bar and Lounge. On either side are the new Terrazza-style cabins which are similar to the Havana cabins found on the other Vista(2016)-class vessels.

venezia virtual tour

At the very aft of the deck is the Terazza Carnevale outdoor lounge.

venezia virtual tour

All of deck 06 is cabins. Both inside, and balcony cabins are on this deck.

All of deck 07 is cabins. Both inside, outside, and balcony cabins are on this deck.

All of deck 08 is cabins. Both inside, and balcony cabins are on this deck. The navigational bridge is forward.

All of deck 09 is cabins. Both inside, outside, and balcony cabins are on this deck. At the very front is the famed secret which is an outdoor deck, right above the bridge. If you’ve seen any of my other tours of Carnival vessels, they all have this to varying degrees.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 10 forward is all cabins. There’s inside, outside, and balcony cabins on this deck. After the forward section, you arrive at the retractable glass covered main pool. Arguably the most striking area on the ship.

venezia virtual tour

Surrounding the Lido Pool are four different venues, two bars, and two food areas. At the forward end of the Lido is the Rococo Bar, and the Java Blue Cafe for coffee and gelato.

venezia virtual tour

Then on the opposite side is the famous Guys Burger Joint, and the new Tomodoro (similar to the Blue Iguana on other vessels).

venezia virtual tour

Past the pool area is the main buffet called Lido Marketplace.

venezia virtual tour

Walking through the buffet you’re back outside at the aft pool. On the port side is the pizza place, Pizzeria del Capitano. On the starboard side is the New England themed Seafood Shack.

venezia virtual tour

The rest of the deck is the pool and pool bar looking out over the aft of the ship.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 11 is also cabins in the forward area with the same mix of inside, outside, and balcony cabins. Past that forward area is the deck that encircles that main pool area. Also here is the Pergola Bar.

venezia virtual tour

After walking around the pool area, there’s the camp ocean kids area. (the highlight of my visit here was definite this bear in the third photo)

venezia virtual tour

Strolling past Camp Ocean you are at the sports court.

venezia virtual tour

And after that is the a small sun deck that overlooks the aft pool.

venezia virtual tour

Desk 12 features the Cloud 9 Spa at the forward section. A bit smaller on the Venezia than on her other siblings, but still has a large fitness area at the very front.

venezia virtual tour

Past the spa are balcony and inside cabins, and past those, the rest of the deck is outdoors. The Carnival Waterworks slides are here.

venezia virtual tour

Immediately after the slides is the main sundeck that covers the glass domed main pool.

venezia virtual tour

Past the pool area is the mini golf and ropes course.

venezia virtual tour

The jogging track surrounds this area and it’s where the funnel is. There are two little outdoor fitness areas at the aft end of the deck.

venezia virtual tour

Deck 14 is split into two different sections. The forward area is just cabins, and the aft area is the top part of the ropes course.

The topmost deck of the Carnival Venezia is deck 15. This is entirely an outdoor area and is the adults-only Serenity.

Tommaso Santi

Hi, I'm a Venetian guy who deeply love his city, you can call me Tommy. Since I was a child I had a passion for the nature, and was feeling linked to the element which was surrounding me, water. That's why growing up I decided to study Environmental Sciences, and from there, as my knowledge was getting bigger, my link become even stronger and I fell in love with the lagoon and the environment of Venice. Now, I started this website trying to show you how beautiful is my land, and my goal would be to be able to pass you at least a little of my emotions. To make you understand how beautiful is living here and to make your experience the best!

Experience the jewel of Venice as you stroll across the Rialto bridge , the most famous bridge spanning the Grand Canal. Discover the neighbourhood of Rialto, which became the banking centre of Venice, and the inspiration for Shakespeare's play, 'The Merchant of Venice'.
