My friends back home told me this was a must do when you are in Dublin. They we're so right. It was pouring rain but we didn't care because we had our ponchos and most importantly!! Our viking helmets. The guide was hilarious,he knew how to entertain the kids and us adults felt like kids, especially when we would scream out the occasional Viking roar at the people on the street. All in all, great family fun, would highly recommend.

TA-logo

A fantastic trip full of laughter and so much fun. Our tour guide/ driver Kevin should be on the stage. His ad-libbing was second to none and was interspersed with interesting facts. His talents know no bounds and made the trip even more enjoyable. Our children were with us so the jokes were kept tongue in cheek but just as hilarious. Kevin's interaction with the people on the streets was genius and there were some fantastic sports there too. I would highly recommend it to natives and tourists alike.

I've been to Dublin a few times before but we decided to embrace our tourist side and take this tour. I want to go back and do it all over again! We laughed the entire time and still find ourselves randomly chuckling remembering parts. Not the most educational tour but we did actually learn more than we did on several other trips throughout the country and had a WAY better time. Ask for one of the rides with Kevin! We wish he led all of our tours! Definitely book your tickets in advance, they often sell out.

Viking Splash Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Viking Splash Tours – Dublin’s most entertaining city tour by far

viking splash tour route

The Viking Splash Tour turned out to be the best of all the tours by quite a bit. Much of the route was the same as the hop-on/hop-off bus tours, but of course one of the things that makes this one different is the tour is done in a vehicle called Duk, which is amphibious. It sounded like nothing but a gimmick until we actually drove into the Dublin Docklands, where the tour continued with even more interesting sights that aren’t visible by land, and a unique look at the whole place.

The only drawback to this is the Duk stops for 5 or 10 minutes before it can plunge in the water so some waiting helpers can attach some safety pontoons, which the tour guide said weren’t necessary anyway and only used for precautionary purposes. Everyone also has to don a life jacket, unfortunately, but the whole thing is well fun enough to make up for the small hassle.

Most expensive, but do it anyway

viking splash tour route

It also surprised me how packed the Viking Splash Tour vehicle was, especially considering the buses never seemed too full. The Viking Tour only leaves every 30-40 minutes most of the year, but only 4 times per day in the winter months. Word has gotten out that it’s great, so you are advised to book ahead.

What makes it fun and unique

viking splash tour route

At the risk of overselling this part, my group was howling in laughter from nearly start to finish. The greatest highlight was that the guide taught the whole crew how to do a “Viking Scream” at unsuspecting pedestrians we were about to pass. He’d announce the victim as we approached, and they would often show a short look of terror at a Viking bus full of people screaming at them, but then they’d usually laugh right along with everyone in the Duk.

The tour around Dublin is also very informative, and since I can compare it to the other bus tours I can reveal the only things they leave out are a trip to the other side of the river and a look at the giant park and historic prison, but you also get to see U2’s recording studio and a penthouse owned by Colin Ferrell while out in the Dockland’s, so it’s a pretty good trade off, if you ask me.

Cost : €20 for adults, €18 for students/seniors, €10 for children

Duration : 75 minutes (or a bit longer)

Check out the official Viking Splash Tours site for more details and the current schedule of departures.

Make a Viking Splash in Dublin:

A DUKW Operated by Viking Splash in Dublin (©simon@myeclecticimages.com)

Family Fun on land and water.

The weather was damp, cloudy with occasional showers – a typical day in Dublin – and we were going to be on the water as part of our Viking Splash Tours adventure. One way or the other, “waterlogged” was the operative word.

Boarding the Viking Splash DUKW at St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin (©[email protected])

When Simon, Otto and I began our Viking Splash tour by boarding a DUKW – a World War II amphibious transport vehicle – we knew we were in for a treat. The 28-seat bright yellow open-sided vehicle was tall, wide and totally out of place among the cars, buses and bicycles it passed along its Dublin route. But once underway, the DUKW owned the road.

Turf and Surf

For over an hour, our charming Viking-clad guide entertained us with history and humor while encouraging us to raise our hands and roar at passersby. The young children loved it, as did the older kids like us.

Front View of the Viking Splash DUKW (©[email protected])

Our Viking Splash Tour took us past many of Dublin’s well-known sites: Trinity College, Christ Church Cathedral, Viking Dublin, Medieval Dublin, Georgian Dublin, Government buildings, the Dublin Docklands and more. The narrative was half historical fact and half corny humor. Despite the threatening weather, we couldn’t help but smile.

A Full Load of Temporary Vikings Aboard the Viking Splash DUKW (©[email protected])

In true sturdy Viking fashion, tours run rain or shine. We weren’t worried about getting wet, though. Unless you were seated in the last eight rows, you had a canvas roof under which to shelter from the rain, and rain ponchos were made available on the Viking Splash Tours for all passengers.

When the DUKW arrived at the dock for the water portion of the Viking Splash Tour, we were all required to don life jackets. Floatation devices were attached to the sides and in we went. In fact, the water wings were never used when the DUKWs were employed in the military but were an added precaution to provide an extra layer of safety.

On the Water the Viking Splash DUKW Equipped with Additional Floatation Bags fro Added Stability and Safety (©[email protected])

Our transition from land to water was barely noticeable. The sounds and smells of Dublin gave way to a change in the DUKW’s engine and water moving around us. The humor-punctuated history lesson continued as we maneuvered through the water of the Grand Canal until we were once more on dry land.

History of the Lucky DUKW

In the 1940s the DUKW was built and utilized for the purpose of transporting men and equipment from ship to shore and back again. Often used to transport wounded soldiers from land to hospital ships, missions of mercy were also on the DUKWs agenda.

The DUKW weighed 13,000 pounds empty and moved at a whopping 50 miles per hour on the road. On the water it made 5.5 knots per hour. It measured 31 feet in length, 8 feet 3 inches in width and 8 feet 9 inches high with the canvas top in place.

In World War II the DUKWs were used in the Sicilian invasion in the Mediterranean and played a prominent role on the beaches of Normandy on D Day. When the Korean War broke out the United States military deployed several hundred DUKWs to bring supplies ashore during several key battles.

Originally designed as a military vehicle, the DUKW made a smooth transition to civilian life. Police and fire departments, as well as rescue units, pressed these multi-purpose vehicles into service. They were present during rescue efforts for the Great Flood of 1993, and Hurricane Katerina in 2005, maneuvering through flooded neighborhoods and transporting individuals and families stranded on their rooftops.

Today, the DUKWs have found a new career as tourist transports for companies such as Viking Splash Tours.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a deep dive into the history and culture of Dublin, you might want to give this one a pass. But if you’re after a lighthearted outing with the kids, grandkids or your silly self that will put a goofy grin on your face, Viking Splash Tours will hit all the high notes. Besides, having fun is good for your health, and this kind of fun is just what the doctor ordered.

"Viking Splash Tours Dublin"

Viking Splash Tours

Viking Splash Tours Dublin have been entertaining and educating adults and kids alike, native and foreign for the last ten years with their unique fun tour of Dublin. For family sight- seeing with a difference, book yourself and your family a seat on the Viking Splash Tour.  You will see Dublin as you have never seen it before and be guided by a tour guide unlike any you are likely to have met before either.

You will be taken around Dublin, not on a bus but on an amphibious vehicle called a Dukw. A what? Yes a Dukw – Pronounced ‘duck’ it is an authentic World War Two American land to sea vehicle which was built by the General Motor Corporation. These Dukws played a huge role in landing Allied Troops on the Beaches of Normandy during the D Day landings. Originally there were approximately 22,000 of these work-horse vehicles in service with the American forces, but only a few hundred have survived ’til today. And you and your family could take a trip on one. Living history before you ever see Dublin at all.

Nowadays in Dublin these Dukws have been pressed into service as unique tour vehicles and for some reason are ‘piloted’ by Vikings. Hence the Viking Splash Tour.

Although the Viking Splash Tour is all about having a bit of fun as you tour the city, it is important to note that the vehicles are all licensed by the Dept of Marine and Transport and all guides and drivers are fully qualified and experienced.

Viking Splash Tour

  • Dublin Town
  • Tue, 21 May 2013

For our latest instalment of ‘An American in Dublin’ we sent our roving reporter (and enthusiastic DublinTown Intern) Emma, to experience the popular Viking Splash Tour where she discovered that buses do in fact float!:

Last week, my family—parents, fourteen-year-old brother, and ten-year-old sister—came to visit me in Dublin. My mother was quite enthusiastic about almost everything (the fourteen-year-old brother not so much). When she saw the Viking Splash Tour , she literally shrieked.

“Oh!” she exclaimed. “We HAVE to do this. I’ve always thought I’d make a good Viking.” She seemed surprised by my siblings’ and my laughter. “What?” she asked indignantly. “I like sailing. I eat meat. I appreciate a good revenge plot. And you know I have a head for hats.”

Well then. Obviously, we had to do it.

I expect that you’ve seen the Viking Splash Tour around town; it is, after all, rather hard to miss. Possibly because of the yelling tourists wearing Viking helmets, I’ve always thought this tour was a BYOB sort of situation. It’s not, actually. It’s quite family-friendly. It’s just that people are really enthusiastic. (Also, your captain will make it very clear that alcohol is not allowed on board. So don’t BYOB.)

Each boat is named after a Viking god—‘cuz, you know, this is an educational tour—and each tour guide has a Viking name. Our ship was the Odin and our guide was Captain Pat. (Most tour guides have more awe-imposing names, like Anto the Atrocious or Jimmy the Gallant. I guess Captain Pat is a modest sort of Viking.) When you step on the ship, you’ll notice the horned helmets laid out neatly on the seats. You do not get to keep them. (My suggestion for the Viking Splash Tour: let us keep the helmets. Brand ‘em and let visitors do your advertising!).

As your captain will explain, Vikings do not like Celts. This means that when you’re on the Viking ship and wearing the Viking helmet you have to roar at unsuspecting pedestrians. My mother was very good at this. At first you feel—I felt, at least—a little self-conscious screaming at strangers, but you quickly get over this when you realize how fun it is to roar at men who jump, shriek, and then, seeing that it’s the Viking Splash Tour, try to act cool. Great craic, that.

The tour is about 75 minutes and includes most of the major sights: Trinity College, the Mansion House, more government buildings, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Molly Malone, etc. (my geography is abysmal, so I’m definitely getting the order wrong here—the route is not as insane as that list would suggest). When you get to the Docklands, each passenger is given an enormous life jacket, giant flotation bumpers are attached to the bus, and you drive right into the water.

The water entry part of the tour is a bit disconcerting, to be honest, but I will attest that the buses do in fact float. You’ll be fine. So you cruise around for a bit and watch the water skiers and remark on how impressive Bord Gáis is and isn’t it annoying that Lion King tickets sell out so quickly. It’s all very pleasant and surprisingly genteel for a Viking cruise. I suppose even Vikings had their genteel moments though.

And then you drive back up the ramp and you’re on land again, and you hand in your life jacket and then you’re a Viking again. You drive back to town—periodically doing the Viking roar along the way—and wind up back at Stephen’s Green North.

The Viking Splash Tour is all good fun. The tour guides are excellent, and there’s lots of banter and wit. Fun for the whole family, really; even my sullen fourteen-year-old brother had a good time. (He especially liked Molly Malone.) My mother might have been right on this one. And I’d be a pretty good Viking too.

Viking Tour History

The Viking Splash Tour was born in 1999. An Irish-American couple, Peter and Lynda Stocks saw potential for these viking tours after coming across the Boston Duck Tours. With such deep history within the waters of the Grand Canal, these tours soon became a popular tourist attraction.

Why We Love Viking Splash Tour

Funny tour guide, he loves telling jokes.

No matter what’s your age you get to roar and behave like a kid, not so much of a Viking.

This is a great activity to do whether by yourself, your partner or your kids, it’s fun.

How much is the delivery?

Do you ship internationally, will you send me tracking information when my device ships, can i order multiple wifi devices at the same time, can i place an order for collection, can i have the device delivered to my hotel, how do i return the device after using it, can i return the device from a different address / destination, what are my options for returning the device from ireland, when is the wifi service activated, where can i use the device, when should i order my wifi plan, how long does the battery last, do you provide a car charger, can i stream movies, can sharing my connection with others make it slower.

Realistically, no. Usually, you won’t notice any difference at all.

If everyone around you is trying to stream Game of Thrones at the same time, then that might be an issue. To solve: team up and watch together.

What if I’m having a problem with coverage?

There could be a few things that you’re running into:

It might be a small coverage gap or weak signal in the area you’re in. Try connecting in a different area nearby to see if you can establish a better signal. You might be underground or within a structure that’s affecting your signal. Sounds odd, but wireless signals aren’t perfect. It would be helpful to try again in a more open location.

Chiefs tried to make big splash trade for this player in 2024 NFL Draft, but came up empty, per report

Kansas city was trying to trade up for an offensive lineman.

usatsi-16885841-168392141-lowres.jpg

The Kansas City Chiefs made a small splash during the first-round of the 2024 NFL Draft when they traded up four spots to grab Xavier Worthy , but the former Texas receiver wasn't their main target in the first round.

According to The Athletic , the Chiefs were looking to make a big splash in the opening round of the draft by trading up at least 10 spots so that they could land Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims .

Midway through the first round, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi were calling around to try and make a deal happen, but they gave up on the potential trade after Mims got selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 18th overall pick.

So not only did the Chiefs lose out on Mims, but they lost out on him to one of their bitterest AFC rivals.

It's an interesting nugget from the draft, because it tells you how serious the Chiefs were about trying to improve their offensive line. The Chiefs had Donovan Smith at left tackle last season, but he's no longer with the team. Mims played right tackle in college and according to The Athletic, some NFL teams believe he can play left tackle and it's possible the Chiefs were looking to draft him to play that spot.

After losing out on Mims, the Chiefs ended up using their second-round pick on an offensive lineman by taking Kingsley Suamataia out of BYU at 63rd overall. Right now, Wanya Morris is penciled in as the starter at left tackle for Kansas City, but Suamataia will almost certainly be given a chance to win the job in training camp. The upside for the Chiefs is that Suamataia can play right or left tackle, so they can put him in the spot that makes the most sense for them.

Although the Chiefs didn't land Mims in the first-round, they get the next best thing: A speedy weapon for Patrick Mahomes . The Chiefs ended up trading from 32nd overall to 28th overall in a deal with the Bills , which allowed them to get Worthy, who set the NFL combine record for fastest 40 with a 4.21 time earlier this year .

The Chiefs might not have gotten they guy they were targeting in the first-round, but they still ended up with a solid draft haul with Pete Prisco giving their overall class an 'A' grade .

If the Chiefs had pulled off the trade to get Mims, it would have been the biggest first-round draft day trade of the year, but instead, that honor went to the Minnesota Vikings , who traded up six spots (from 23rd to 17th) to land Dallas Turner .
