University of Cincinnati Digital Campus

Virtual Grounds partnered with the University of Cincinnati Planning + Design + Construction (P+D+C) department to create a high-fidelity and accurate digital twin of the Downtown Campus. The collaboration spread through many years and build upon the university's entry for Google's View your Campus in 3D competition in 2007, spearheaded by VGI's Managing Partner Jose Kozan.

The set of 3D digital twin of the campus' structures also proved to be a valuable tool for the university's space management and planning. The database of 76 digital models of the Uptown West and Medical Campus became part of a web-based digital visualization and planning tool. The interactive planning interface was developed for P+D+C to support decision-making on assessment and planning of the UC Uptown Campus, both West and Medical. The software was built upon a game engine and capable of deployment across desktop, mobile and portable VR devices.

Client: University of Cincinnati Planning + Design + Construction PDC

University of Cincinnati Virtual Campus Tours

VGI designed, implemented and updated 2D and 3D virtual map tours of the Uptown and Medical Campus for desktop visitors, highlighting selected buildings, artwork, and landscape that populate the university's grounds. The 2D map tour was also adapted as a downloadable app for smartphones.

Highlighting the Campus

VGI recreated the selected buildings following the low-polygon approach and photo-realistic textures commonly employed in game design. The technique reflected in a lightweight set of 3D models that produced a realistic representation of the builldings without heavy processing and rendering, suitable for household computers.

Playable Tour Paths

The desktop architecture tour let online guests virtually visit the signature and LEED buildings through four automatic tours that followed the main streetfronts of the Downtown Campus: Martin Luther King Boulevard, Clifton Avenue/Historic Ridge, Corry St, and the Campus Mainstreet.

The Mobile Experience

The information was redesigned to showcase the content of the 2D tour of the Uptown and Medical Campus adapted for the mobile experience. Visitors can choose among three avaiable tour paths: get to know the art installations, the beautifully landscaped areas, and notable buildings around the campus.

University of Cincinnati P+D+C Planning Tool

Our collaboration with UC's Office of Planning + Design + Construction started in 2007, with the university's entry on Google's virtual campus competition where teams from educational institutions around the US modeled replicas of their campus for Google's 3D visualization platform Google Earth. The competition brought to light the potential for 3D models in supporting campus planning.

Digital Twin for Campus Stewardship

VGI expanded the digital twin of the university's Downtown Campus and developed a visualization platform to assist P+D+C's planning of the university grounds. The digital twin of the West and Medical Campuses has over 76 virtual buildings including temporary housing for a couple sites while new construction was being planned and executed.

A Tool to Support Decision-Making

The software allows users to tour the campus in aerial view or with the point of view of visitors walking around the area. The Planning Tool helps the office to assess and evaluate future construction by allowing users to turn off the structures individually and substitute an existing virtual model with a new design.

The Planning Tool

Virtually build and demolish buildings. Testing solutions before construction begins. Realistic 3D assets to visualize and plan the Campus evolution.

Supporting Visualization and Wayfinding

The digital twin of the West and Medical Campuses include over 76 virtual buildings as well as temporary housing for a couple sites while new construction was being planned and executed.

The virtual assets were adapted into a comprehensive desktop tour and downloadable mobile app.

Uptown + Medical Campus Tours

The University of Cincinnati Downtown Campus includes work from world-renowned architects, landscape architects, artists and sculptors. To better highlight these features, the desktop tours were subdivided into Art, Architecture, and Landscape paths. The Architecture Tour explored a selected set of buildings, in particular those with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Art and Landscape tourpaths featured six green areas and 14 pieces of sculture in the walking tour, including art, sculptures, and artistic landscapes distributed throughout the university.

The Downloadable App

The virtual tours, originally tailored for visualization on mobile screens, were accessible for free download on the App Store and Google Play. The map-based walking tour included approximately 46 stops and is GPS-capable, serving as a wayfinding tool for visitors to get directions in real time. The Downtown Campus Map Tour App includes the Uptown and Medical Campus. Visitors were able to select between the Art, Architecture and Landscape tourpaths, allowing students, faculty, staff and visitors to navigate around the campus and appreciate the unique features of both places through texts, images, and videos.

Cincinnati is full of vibrant and rich history. Known as the "Queen City", Cincinnati has no shortage of interesting pieces of history that will keep you learning something new everyday.

Cincinnati was founded in 1788 and named after Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus who was a hero of the Roman Republic in the fifth century and a model of civic responsibility.

In the 19th century, Cincinnati was America’s meatpacking powerhouse which is how Cincinnati earned the nickname “Porkopolis” and is still fondly revered with statue pigs throughout the city and our annual “Flying Pig Marathon”.

First held in 1976, Cincinnati has America’s largest Oktoberfest celebration that includes about 700,000 people featuring genuine German inspired food and beer, live music, a wiener dog race, and world’s largest chicken dance.

Cincinnati is home to the first professional baseball team established in 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, now known as the Cincinnati Reds.

"UC is such a fun, vibrant community. We have so much to offer and there are many faces to UC, helping to ensure most anyone can fit in! We are all Bearcats.”

Emilee Suchomski, Director of Admissions

“I am proud to be apart of such a diverse community of welcoming students with such a strong alumni network.”

Grace Nonnamaker, Admissions Counselor

“If you weren't told this is a university, there is a 50% chance you wouldn't be able to tell you were on a college campus. Everything is so different, yet it merges so well together. There aren’t the same styles anywhere on campus. Everywhere you look and go is different than where you came. The architecture and greenspaces are a refreshing change from the average college campus.”

Sam Clay, Admissions Counselor

“I am part of the UC community! And every person is very hardworking! It's not just the building that made the university. It is the people who work hard to make the campus home! UC gives me a chance to play different roles like studying as a student, working part-time as student staff, working for others as student leaders, and volunteering to help others! So, yes I am a proud Bearcat!”

Mount St. Joseph University

Mount St. Joseph University Announces 2024 Commencement Speakers and Honorary Degree Recipient

Mount st. joseph university (mount) proudly announces sister helen prejean as the keynote speaker for its commencement ceremony scheduled for may 11, 2024..

Mount St. Joseph News

CINCINNATI, Oh. — Sister Helen Prejean is internationally renowned for her unwavering advocacy for social justice, making her an excellent choice to address the graduating Class of 2024.

Born on April 21, 1939  in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sister Helen Prejean joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1957. Over the years, she dedicated herself to teaching and serving in various capacities within her religious community. It was in 1982 when Sister Helen’s path took a turn as she moved to the St. Thomas Housing Project in New Orleans, where she began her transformative work.

Sister Helen's journey led her to become a spiritual advisor to death row inmates, an experience that impacted her and ignited her mission against the death penalty. Her seminal work, "Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States," sparked a national dialogue on capital punishment and inspired a critically acclaimed film.

Throughout her lifetime, Sister Helen has tirelessly advocated for the Catholic Church to oppose capital punishment unequivocally. Her efforts culminated in influencing revisions to the Catholic Catechism, aligning the Church's stance firmly against executions.

“We are honored to welcome Sister Helen Prejean to Mount St. Joseph University as our 2024 commencement speaker,” said President H. James Williams, Ph.D. “Her courageous advocacy and commitment to social justice embody the values we strive to instill in our graduates. Sister Helen’s presence will undoubtedly inspire our students as they embark on their next journeys.”

In addition to Sister Helen Prejean’s address, she will also receive an honorary degree from the University. Alumni Dan Sutton, President and chief executive officer of Kemba Credit Union, and Joe Gutzwiller, chief financial officer at Cinfed Credit Union, will also speak at the graduation ceremonies.

The commencement ceremony will celebrate the achievements of the Mount’s 2024 graduating students and honor the contributions of Sister Helen Prejean, Dan Sutton, and Joe Gutzwiller to their respective fields and communities.

For more information about the Mount’s commencement ceremonies please visit our Commencement page here.

As a Catholic institution rooted in the values of the Sisters of Charity, Mount St. Joseph University excels at serving the common good. Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students at the Mount are inspired to think beyond the classroom and redraw the bounds of what’s possible for their futures. This is accomplished through individualized educational experiences, a safe, secure campus environment, and an all-in commitment from faculty and staff to inspire students to reach their highest potential. The Mount fosters life-long learners who serve, care, and contribute to the world beyond their front doors.
