West Virginia sets the scene with miles upon miles of uninterrupted rolling mountains. The stunning scenery is one of the top reasons to visit West Virginia.

In a state engulfed with wilderness, it's no surprise that its capital city, Charleston, feels much more like a small town. That's really because it is, with a population that hovers just around 50,000. But what the city lacks in cosmopolitan shuffle, it makes up for with history, events, and a whole lot of things to do.

Between the Appalachian mountains and the Kanawha River, the area was settled by pioneers, who moved west after the Revolution, and the first permanent settlement here was Fort Lee, built in 1788. Daniel Boone was an early resident and a member of the Kanawha County Assembly.

West Virginia's most recognizable building, the Charleston State Capitol , rises majestically above the banks of the Kanawha River, with a dome five feet higher than that of the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. The 300-foot dome is entirely covered with 23.5-karat gold leaf applied in tiny sheets less than four inches square.

The building's architect, Cass Gilbert, relied on themes from classical antiquity for this limestone building, as he did for several of his other well-known works, such as the U.S. Treasury Building and the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington. Follow the history of West Virginia from prehistoric times by following a trail through the West Virginia State Museum , from the dark Coal Forest with displays of coal and fossils to a film of today's West Virginia landscapes.

On the way, you'll see archaeological finds (including one of the state's most famous hoaxes, the Braxton County Rune Stone); visit an original settler's cabin; take a realistic trip through a simulated coal mine; and get an introduction to West Virginia's history, culture, traditions, and art. Short films and audio commentary enrich the experience.

Home to the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra , the 240,000-square-foot Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences combines performing arts, visual arts, and sciences in one location. Concerts and performances here include a variety of musical genres, in addition to classical, such as gospel, swing, jazz, Motown, rock and roll, and southern rock. The Broadway in Charleston series also presents its productions here.

Despite the variety offered here, this is only one of several performance venues in Charleston. The Charleston Light Opera Guild produces off-Broadway shows, and Live on the Levee is a concert series featuring local and national acts performing a variety of music, from African and country to pop, every Friday evening from May to September at Haddad Riverfront Park.

Productions by the Charleston Ballet include traditional classical favorites and contemporary and folk styles. Add performances by the River City Youth Ballet Ensemble , and there are plenty of choices for things to do at night in Charleston.

Along Capitol Street, visitors can stroll through old-time Charleston, with its well-maintained historical buildings. Cafés, galleries, bookstores, and boutique shops sit along the tree-lined brick sidewalks, where restaurants offer everything from pizza and Asian food to house-made ice cream.

Monthly, March through December, the street hosts ArtWalk events that celebrate the city's artistic talent with free, self-guided walking tours of shops and galleries featuring paintings, sculptures, photography, and music.

Near the end of Capitol Street, in a renovated 19th-century freight station, is West Virginia's only indoor/outdoor farmers market, Capitol Market , with a year-round mix of fresh produce, plants, flowers, seafood, and locally made products. Between the market, galleries, and boutiques, this is the city's favorite neighborhood for leisurely shopping.

This impressive and poignant oval monument features four monoliths, each representing one of the four 20th-century military conflicts. A reflecting pool surrounds the monument, whose interior walls are faced with polished black granite etched with the names of fallen West Virginia veterans.

Sculptures of four figures representing the four major service branches and each of the conflicts are the work of the memorial's designer, P. Joseph Mullins. The statues represent a World War I doughboy, a World War II sailor, a Korean aviator, and a Vietnam Marine, each in full gear.

The neighborhood around the Clay Center and State Capitol is more commonly referred to as "East End" and is one of the city's oldest and most diverse commercial districts, where modern urban styles blend with Charleston's history. The area has recently seen a regeneration enlivened by an eclectic mix of public art ranging from graffiti-style works to historic statues.

The State Capitol dominates this riverside district, and on its grounds is the East End's oldest building, the 1815 Holly Grove Mansion. In this district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places , you'll find examples of at least a dozen different architectural styles spanning the city's history, from Georgian and Greek Revival to Prairie and Bungalow.

Although its construction was only completed in 1925, this Georgian Revival-style home, designed by Charleston architect Walter Martens, is a symbol of West Virginia's distinguished past.

Filled with priceless antiques, silver, porcelains, and crystal chandeliers, the mansion is open for tours by reservation. Included in the tour are the ballroom; library; and dining room, with a 14-foot-long mahogany banquet table that extends to seat 24 at formal dinners. The house is the official residence of the Governor of West Virginia.

Hike, bike, cross-country ski, or pitch a tent at Kanawha State Forest , seven miles south of Charleston. The scenic 9,300-acre forest is especially popular with nature lovers for its birdlife, which includes 19 species of wood warblers that nest in its woodlands. The park is a popular place for picnics and has a children's playground.

This makes it a good place for families, and the park is also popular with walkers and hikers for its well-kept trails. Most are shorter than two miles and rated easy and moderate, the easiest being the Davis Creek Trail. For more of a challenge, try the Rocky Ridge Trail, which is especially beautiful in the fall for its ridge-top views.

Two floors of family fun await visitors at the Avampato Discovery Museum in the Clay Center for Arts and Sciences. Attention-grabbing, interactive science exhibits bring life to the earth sciences, engineering, energy, magnetism, and health.

Designed as an old-style roadside tourist attraction, Milton Gardner's Earth City explores earth science, while Health Royale features innovative experiences in health and wellness. Kidspace is designed for the abilities and interests of children under age five, and STEAMworks explores technology, engineering, and math.

The museum also houses nearly 800 works of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century American art, as well as European counterparts.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this fine example of Greek Revival architecture was built in 1834 in central Charleston and later moved to its present location beside Daniel Boone Park.

Most of the Craik-Patton House is original, and it is furnished with fine examples of early 19th-century pieces, including Queen Anne tables, Windsor chairs, Chinese export and English porcelain, French wallpaper, and period art.

In addition to the house, you can tour the formal boxwood garden and a reconstructed log cabin that offers a vivid contrast in the lives of different classes in the early 1800s.

Following the saga of African American life from the kingdoms of West Africa to Appalachian coal mines, exhibits at the Heritage Towers Museum & Culture Center explore some little-known chapters in West Virginia's rich history.

Working with other museums and schools, the center celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans in West Virginia and elsewhere and promotes cultural diversity.

The museum grew from an early traveling exhibition on the wreck of the Henrietta Marie , a slave ship found buried under the ocean for 300 years off the coast of Florida. The ship represents the infamous Triangle Trade, and the trans-Atlantic slave route, and serves as a vehicle for exploring the history of African Americans in West Virginia.

When the old Joel Ruffner home on Kanawha Blvd. was torn down in the 1960s, hidden within it was found the walls of the original log cabin around which the later house had grown. Carefully reconstructed in Daniel Boone Park , this cabin, built sometime before 1803, is believed to be the oldest extant house in the county.

Built by Joseph Ruffner, who bought much of the land on which Charleston stands today, was the first of a long line of Ruffners who were instrumental in the city's early history. You'll find some Ruffner furniture on display in the Craik-Patton House.

Daniel Boone Park, which commemorates the early Charleston resident and assemblyman, has picnic tables, a fishing pier, and boat docking.

Overlooking the Kanawha River, and the rolling mountains in the distance, Haddad Riverfront Park is one of the top locations in Charleston to enjoy live outdoor events. The amphitheater can seat up to 2,500 people, while boaters can dock at the park and watch the city activity and live events from the gorgeous water vantage point. In fact, this is the place where you'll be able to catch the free concert series, Live on the Levee.

Long before West Virginia was, indeed, West Virginia, it was home to Native American tribes that date back thousands of years. Evidence of the earliest people can be found just outside the city center in South Charleston. It's called the Criel Mound, and it's one of the few surviving burial mounds in the Kanawha Valley.

The Criel Mound is thought to have been built sometime around 500 BCE by the Adena culture, which is not the name of the tribe but rather a name coined by archaeologists to refer to the cultural practices of tribes of this time. It is the second-largest burial mound in the state, standing at 33 feet tall and 157 feet in diameter.

The site was first excavated in the 19th century for the Smithsonian Institution. Within the mound were several burial chambers, including the main chamber, which had 11 bodies. Scientists have determined that the mound was once part of a larger complex of mounds that spanned several miles.

The mound was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Today it is a part of Charleston's history and can be visited within a small park in South Charleston. This is a great place to visit to learn about the history of the native peoples of the region. You can also visit the South Charleston Interpretive Center, which has a lot more historical information.

Many of Charleston's top tourist attractions are in the downtown area, and this is where most people want to be based. At the northwest end of the city center, where many of the mid-range hotels are found, are the Civic Center and Town Center shopping mall. At the far southeast end are the State Capitol and the West Virginia State Museum. Below are some highly rated hotels in good locations:

• Charleston has a distinct lack of true luxury hotels but there are some full-service, business-style hotels in the city. The Marriott Town Center is well positioned in downtown, near the Civic Center and Charleston Town Center, and features an indoor heated pool and fitness center.
• Nearby, but closer to the Kanawha River, is the Four Points by Sheraton , offering well-appointed rooms and similar amenities. The higher floors offer great views over the city.

Mid-Range Hotels :

• Hampton Inn Charleston - Downtown is just a few minutes outside the downtown area but is close to restaurants and shopping and offers a free shuttle to downtown and the airport. The hotel features a pool and fitness center and comes with a complimentary breakfast.
• The Embassy Suites by Hilton is an all-suite hotel set in a great location downtown and also has an indoor pool and free breakfast.

Budget Hotels :

• Budget hotels in the city center are limited, but the Capitol Hotel is one option in the heart of downtown offering basic but clean rooms.
• For the best selection of budget and value hotels, it is a good idea to head outside the city center. The Sleep Inn , with large rooms and a free breakfast, is 10 minutes outside of downtown.
• With a similar commute time, the Days Inn Charleston East comes with a pool and complimentary breakfast.

Located in the western central part of the state, Charleston is easily accessible within three to four hours from big cities such as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Columbus, Ohio; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Lexington, Kentucky. Visitors tend to drive and enjoy four seasons of lovely scenery. You can also fly into Yeager Airport or take a discounted Allegiant Air flight into Huntington, West Virginia, rent a car, and drive the hour to reach Charleston.

Clay Center

When the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia was being built, thanks to a generous donation from the Schoenbaum (Shoney’s restaurant) family, Charlestonians were thrilled and scared at the same time for its success. Twenty years later, the emotion we mostly feel is pride for our beloved event center, art museum, Avampato Discovery Museum (kid’s museum), and lots more. The Clay Center has become the heart of Charleston, sharing world-class performers, Broadway productions, local dance recitals, and charitable functions, and that is just scratching the surface.

All under one roof, this multiple-use facility has a separate space for an art museum, the ElectricSky Theater (also a planetarium), children’s museum, and performing arts venue that doubles as home to the West Virginia Symphony.

West Virginia State Museum

The West Virginia State Museum , still referred to as The Cultural Center by locals, is an excellent Charleston attraction where you can learn about the history and progress of The Mountain State. It is enjoyable for all ages, and admission is free. Displays run the gamut from products made in West Virginia ( Blenko glass and Fiesta dinnerware, part of the Homer Laughlin China Company) to famous celebrities who hail from West Virginia (Mary Lou Retton, Chuck Yeager, Don Knotts, and Jennifer Garner). The West Virginia State Museum has expertly designed exhibits sharing the state’s coal mining and war histories and Appalachian cultures.

Since I am a local, the mock Capitol Street, paying tribute to the days gone by, with a department store and all its old-timey goods, is my favorite. The West Virginia State Museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Jerry West, the Los Angeles Lakers basketball player whose silhouette is featured on the NBA logo, is from Charleston? Chelyan, to be exact.

South Hills

A beloved neighborhood in Charleston is South Hills, which partially overlooks downtown Charleston and the Kanawha River. The Bridge Road Shops feature high-end boutiques such as Geraniums , Eggplant (a personal favorite for 20 years), Petit Jewelry Designs , and Yarid’s Shoes . Pick up a mouth-watering sweet treat from Sarah’s Bakery or a tasty bite from Bridge Road Bistro while you are there.

Capitol Market

An old train station found its rebirth with the conception of Charleston’s Capitol Market . This year-round offering attracts visitors and locals to shop for West Virginia made products, excellent cheeses and wines, and sushi. It also offers a coffee and butcher shop. You will find fresh produce inside and outside at the market stalls (weather permitting) and a fantastic selection of seasonal merchandise, including live Christmas trees, fodder shock, and hay bales for Halloween.

Eat a tasty meal from Soho’s , Sushi Garden, or Johnnie’s Fresh Meat Market , mainstays at the Capitol Market, or enjoy a delicious coffee, tea, or espresso drink at Mea Cuppa Coffee . This really is a must-see attraction when visiting beautiful Charleston, West Virginia.

Mountain Stage

The pride of Charleston is and will forever be Mountain Stage , in my eyes. In 1983, West Virginia Public Broadcasting launched Mountain Stage, a live performance radio show that quickly shot to national distribution within a couple of years.

Thirty-plus years later, Mountain Stage, filmed at the Culture Center Theater with host Larry Groce, records 26 programs annually and is heard on over 100 radio stations. The two-hour concerts are fabulous and have an intimate scale and feel. I’ve seen artists such as Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls, Zap Mama, Alison Krauss, and Jonatha Brooke perform over the years, and the excitement and first-class production of these shows never fade.

Fun Fact: My husband and I were on our honeymoon 29 years ago in Boston. While standing in a Tower Records near MIT’s campus, we overheard some college kids listening to The Best of Mountain Stage on the sample headphones (new at the time) and talking about how cool it would be to live in West Virginia and see the show live. I still smile thinking back to that moment.

The West Virginia State Capitol is the most beautiful of all the states. Perhaps I am biased since I lived there most of my life, but even first-time visitors have told me they concur. Its 293-foot gilded dome shimmering in the sun and moonlight is a beautiful sight. You can also tour the state capitol, a free attraction offering a fantastic look at the impressive architecture and decor. Guided tours are available, but make sure to check close to your date to verify the days and times.

Architect Cass Gilbert built and designed the beautiful West Virginia State Capitol, a taupe-colored Indiana limestone building fashioned in Italian Renaissance style. The grounds are pristine and bursting with seasonal flowers. My favorites statues and monuments on the capitol grounds are the coal miner monument, the women veterans memorial, and Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight statue.

Fun Fact: There are mythological figures in the carved heads above the entrances to the West Virginia State Capitol building. For example, you will find Poseidon, Demeter, and Hestia on the west entrance to the main building.

Local Eateries

Charleston is known for some great local restaurants. When I visit there, I always have my wish list of old favorites or new places that have recently sprung up that I want to visit. The restaurants I recommend in downtown Charleston are Sitar of India (the best Indian food anywhere), Pies and Pints (delicious pork nachos and gourmet pizzas), and Bricks and Barrels (charcuterie boards and lamb chops).

In South Hills, my old stomping grounds, first and foremost is 1010 Bridge , a new restaurant pumping out picture-perfect plates and eclectic recipes that are very well received by the locals. The delicious Mexican food from Cozumel at Ashton Place can’t be beaten, and Hibachi, the Japanese steakhouse at Trace Fork, always delivers a solid meal. Try the grilled tofu … it tastes like cheese puffs!

Historic Capitol Street

Historic and scenic Capitol Street along with neighboring Hale and Lee Streets make up downtown Charleston’s centerpiece. Here, you’ll find excellent local eateries, boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, and the public library on tree-lined streets. You can’t come to Charleston and miss this important address.

If you are craving a quick bite, Graziano’s Pizza sells by the slice and has been feeding Charlestonians for 50 years or more, or have your favorite sushi roll from Ichiban Pan-Asian Cuisine . Enjoy a tasty ice cream from Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream (try the coconut and thank me later), a cake pop from Rock City Cake Company , browse the book and magazine selection at Taylor Books , and have a savory or sweet snack from The Peanut Shoppe .

For your shopping needs, Art Emporium , Art Store, and Purple Moon are great for browsing artworks, while Stray Dog Antiques has a killer selection of antiques. I love the eclectic selection of souvenirs and knick-knacks at Oddbird Gifts .

Capitol Street has many Charleston-based bars and a nice selection of places for a beer or glass of wine. Black Sheep Burrito and Brews and Pies and Pints have awesome craft beer, while The Block Restaurant and Wine Cellar has amazing wine selections. Sip a craft cocktail from Bar 101.

West Virginia Power

The West Virginia Power is a Class-A affiliate minor-league baseball team in the South Atlantic League that plays at Appalachian Power Park in downtown Charleston. They are a farm team for the Seattle Mariners. I may be biased, but this is one of the most gorgeous minor league baseball stadiums in the country.

With 4,500 seats, you’ll find fun things to do for the whole family, including concessions, games, contests, and kid activities at nearly every game. Catch The West Virginia Power for the 2021 season.

Kanawha State Forest

A few minutes outside of Charleston brings you to Kanawha State Forest , a perfect address with 25 miles for hiking, biking, walking, or just getting outdoors. Pack a picnic or pick up to-go food and enjoy eating amidst the massive tree canopies. The drive to get there is pretty thrilling if you live somewhere that doesn’t have curvy roads as West Virginia does.

More Fun Facts: Charleston is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha (pronounced “Ka-NAH-wah”) rivers. It is an excellent spot to get out on the water for kayaking, boating, and fishing. They consist of a World War I doughboy, a World War II sailor, a Marine in Vietnam, and an aviator in Korea.

Dunbar is a city located just 10 minutes outside of Charleston, and it’s a city with a very unique tradition.

It’s called the Critter Dinner, an annual celebration of any and all types of meat.

They’ve got it.

They’ve put it between two slices of bread with some mayo.

Other menu items through the years have ranged from frog legs to camel patties to squirrel skewers.

“Roadkill” is a popular category, though it’s not actual roadkill, of course; it’s just a reflection of the odd assortment of creatures being grilled up with a side of sauce.

The organizers aren’t just doing it for a love of wild game, either.

The entry fee to the dinner is a donation of canned or dry items, and all proceeds are given to the Dunbar Institute Food Pantry.

Who knew that “roadkill” could be one of Charleston’s attractions?

But the squirrel skewers shouldn’t be missed.

23. Holly Grove Mansion

Also known as the Holly Grove Inn, the Holly Grove Mansion is the oldest building in Charleston’s East End Historical District.

It was constructed all of the way back in 1815 and sits on the National Register of Historic Places today.

Originally part of a much larger plantation, it’s more of a solitary relic now, but it’s still worth a visit if you’ll be in East End.

The architecture is the most amazing thing about the mansion.

It’s dominated by a circular portico at the front that gives way to a two- and three-story residence at the back, and it rests on elegantly cultivated grounds that change with the seasons.

In the spring, their grasses are vividly green.

In the fall, their trees have ever-morphing foliage in dazzling colors.

You can’t currently visit the inside of the mansion, though restoration projects are always being proposed by the city of Charleston, so this might change some day!

Ultimately, if you’re a history buff thinking about what to see in Charleston, the Holly Grove Mansion can be a fun option.

It’s built on a bedrock of real West Virginia history, and it’s cool to see and even cooler to snap selfies with.

24. Charleston Town Center

Charleston Town Center

Buying souvenirs is a must do while you’re on a vacation.

Thankfully, the Charleston Town Center has you covered for everything from hoodies to handbags.

It’s a shopping mall that covers almost one million square feet!

That makes it one of the largest enclosed shopping malls in America.

Haddad Riverfront Park is a bustling place for outdoor festivities.

GOVERNOR’S MANSION

On the shore of the Kanawha River, a red-bricked Georgian mansion serenely watches over the city of Charleston. The mansion was built in 1925 and is the official residence of West Virginia’s governor and their family. Though this building has only stood for the better part of a century, the grounds have been the residence of the governors since 1893.

Visitors to the Governor’s Mansion will find themselves transported to another era in American history. The mansion’s notable features include a likeness to the White House’s foyer with its checkered marble floors and grand staircases. The mansion has wonderfully tailored gardens, historical paintings, a library, and a drawing-room that evoke 18th century American architecture.

Keep in mind that tours to the Governor’s Mansion are free, but reservations are required. The mansion is located by the Capitol Building, so you can combine your tours and get a full picture of gubernatorial life in West Virginia.

AVAMPATO DISCOVERY MUSEUM

At the Avampato Discovery Museum in the Clay Center, the whole family can enjoy the fun and adventure of science. Exhibits range from the science of water at the WaterWorks exhibit to social sciences at MyTown, where kids pick a job, learn to spend money, and can even be mayor for a day. 

Avampato features hands-on activities in nearly every exhibit to engage children in the world of science. For example, in the Meier Music Studio, kids can create their own music using instruments, while over at Healthy Me, kids can explore the human body and its amazing capabilities.

The Avampato Discovery Museum also has a planetarium and theater that shows education films and space documentaries. In addition, the museum has food available, so you won’t have to leave for lunch! A visit here is one of the best things to do in Charleston WV!

CHARLESTON STATE CAPITOL

Before the Civil War, Charleston was a city in the state of Virginia. But, when war broke out, West Virginia seceded from the Confederacy, becoming a state of the Union. After their statehood became official, the state required a capitol building. At first, the state capitol was in Wheeling, WV, but by 1870 the Capitol building moved to Charleston. 

The Capitol Complex began under the expertise of New York architect Cass Gilbert. The project took about six years to complete, from 1924 to 1932. It is a remarkable piece of architecture, boasting nearly two-thirds marble construction, 14 acres of floor space, and a 4,000-pound chandelier glittering with 10,080 pieces of Czechoslovakian crystal.

Tours to the Capitol are free, but reservations are recommended for guided experiences. 

CAPITOL MARKET/CAPITOL STREET

Capitol Street in Charleston is home to quaint shops and picturesque boulevards of Georgian and Queen Anne architecture. It’s the perfect walking neighborhood for a curious traveler and home to one of Charleston’s favorite food and shopping venues: Capitol Market.

The Capitol Market resides in an old train station. You’ll discover a melting pot of restaurants, outdoor greenhouses, farm-fresh produce, and locally made artisan products inside. Take your time exploring; locals recommend enjoying a bite at Soho’s Italian Restaurant, grabbing a latte at Mea Cuppa Coffeebar, and topping off your day with a treat from the market’s swiss chocolatier, Holl’s Swiss Chocolates. 

SECRET BUNKER AT THE GREENBRIER RESORT

If you’re looking for an exciting road trip destination near Charleston, you’ll love the Greenbrier Resort . Not only is Greenbrier a fully functioning resort, complete with a spa, casino, and golf course, but it also happens to house a bunker once designed for Congress.

Greenbrier is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. Its grounds are home to mineral springs that have drawn visitors to the area for over 200 years. In fact, Greenbrier has been a luxury resort for visitors since 1778. 

The presidential and governmental legacy of Greenbrier is impressive. Twenty-eight out of 45 presidents have stayed at the spa. Of course, visitors interested in politics need to check out the decommissioned Cold War bunker on the property. 

The bunker was designed to house all of Congress and had rooms for 1,100 people, 25,000 gallons of water storage, and meeting rooms for the House and Senate. It remained in operation until it was revealed to the public in an expose in 1992. You can visit the bunker today without staying at the Greenbrier!

HADDAD RIVERFRONT PARK

Visitors to Haddad Riverfront Park by day can enjoy a jog, walk, or bike along the riverfront. It’s a wonderful space to picnic and enjoy riverfront views. I recommend swinging by at sunrise when you can see the river turn into a sheet of gold. The park also offers a docking area for boaters looking to enjoy a view of the city and river after an afternoon floating down the Kanawha.

In the summer, Charleston, WV has a thriving outdoor music scene. No area of the city has more music or prettier scenery than Haddad Riverfront Park. The park hosts the summer series “Live on the Levee” from the end of May to the beginning of September in its riverfront amphitheater. 

THE SWEETER SIDE OF THE FEUD WINERY

Enjoy the rich flavors of West Virginian country wine from one of the most famous families in the state! The Sweeter Side of the Feud Winery draws its roots from the Hatfield and McCoy Feud of 1863 – a feud so legendary the term Hatfield and McCoy is now a term for epic feuds in the U.S. 

The descendants of William Anderson Hatfield own the Sweeter Side of the Feud. Today, the family produces delicious wine varietals named after the feud. The winery specializes in sweet and semi-sweet products, perfect for any wine lover to satisfy their sweet tooth.

WEST VIRGINIA VETERANS MEMORIAL

A serene, quiet atmosphere surrounds the West Virginia Veterans Memorial . The limestone monoliths are reminiscent of the memorials in Washington D.C. Located in the Capitol Complex; the memorial stands as a reminder of the West Virginian lives lost during the four great conflicts of the 20th century.

A visit to the West Virginia Veterans Memorial is a time for reflection and giving thanks. As you walk between the four monoliths with their bronze statues, you’ll find the names of every West Virginian life lost during the last century’s wars. 

KANAWHA STATE FOREST

Kanawha State Forest is a must-see destination no matter what time of year you visit West Virginia. In the fall, the forest turns into a kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves change, while winter sees the forest covered in gentle blankets of snow. In the spring and summer, wildflowers bloom, and birdsong fills the air.

The natural retreat of Kanawha provides plenty of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. The forest has over 25 miles of hiking trails for hikers of every skill level, plus mountain biking, fishing, and hunting areas as well. Families can enjoy a day picnicking around one of the playgrounds or hunting for geocaches in the area. 

MOUNTAIN STATE DISTILLERY

The Appalachians are well known for their distilleries – so much so that moonshine and whiskey have become synonymous with the mountain range. At Mountain State Distillery , you can enjoy a taste of real, down-home American moonshine. 

Mountain State Distillery has a wonderful storefront in the Historic Shopping District of Charleston. You can try a number of their small-batch spirits there, including moonshine, vanilla whiskey, and other delicious adult libations. 

MARY PRICE RATRIE ARBORETUM

For the best view of the Capitol Building in the entire city of Charleston, head out to the Mary Price Ratrie Arboretum . The grounds of the scenic parkland overlook the Capitol and the rushing Kanawha River. 

Over 1,500 trees dot the trails at the Mary Price Ratrie Arboretum, with many several centuries old. The arboretum is unique because it is both a living museum of trees and a cemetery. During your visit, pull out your smartphone and check out the trees on PlanIT Geo, which will explore the unique species of plant life in the park. 

WEST VIRGINIA STATE MUSEUM

The West Virginia State Museum first came into being in 1894 when Governor William A. MacCorkle announced it at a party in Charleston. Since then, its collection has perpetually grown, featuring unique and educational exhibits and artifacts. The museum outgrew its original building in the 1970s, and it moved to its current state-of-the-art museum in 1976.

In the museum, you’ll discover everything from artifacts that have been at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, to exhibits on art and culture of the Appalachian region. During your visit, you can explore the surrounding buildings of the Capitol Complex, including the Governor’s Mansion and the State Capitol Building – the museum sits right next door on the shores of the Kanawha River.

CLAY CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND SCIENCES

The Clay Center houses some of the best educational and cultural entertainment in West Virginia. The previously mentioned Discovery Museum resides at the center, but there’s so much more to the facility than that!

The Clay Center happens to be one of Charleston’s best musical venues, with a fun lineup offered throughout the year, rivaling the popular Live on the Levee series. You’ll find symphony and opera offerings at their box office as well. Lovers of dance will relish the chance to see the Broadway and ballet performances that frequently appear here.

Visitors to the Clay Center can also count on an enjoyable time at the Juliet Art Museum, which features traveling exhibits, local artwork, and a permanent collection. And, you can always swing by the Discovery Museum or Planetarium to top off your visit with the kids.

HERITAGE TOWERS MUSEUM & CULTURE CENTER

Explore the diversity and cultural history of West Virginia at the Heritage Towers Museum & Culture Center . The center is home to the best collection of Black and African Heritage artifacts in the state. 

The Heritage Towers Museum works to preserve the history of African Americans in West Virginia. Its doors opened in 2005, which began with a traveling exhibit of the slave ship, “The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie.” Today, the museum’s exhibits include artifacts from the slavery era to modern artwork by Black artists. 

For an in-depth tour of the Black history in West Virginia, the center also offers a Heritage Tour along the Kanawha River Valley. The tour stops at Booker T. Washington’s childhood home, the remains of a plantation on the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU), and traditionally African-American neighborhoods and other historic sites.

CHARLESTON DIRTY BIRDS

Baseball has a long legacy in Charleston. The sport first appeared under the guise of the Charleston Statesmen in 1910, but it was not until 2021 that the Dirty Birds were born. The team’s name is an homage to the canaries that protected coal miners from toxic carbon monoxide in the mines of West Virginia.

Visitors to Charleston can enjoy America’s Favorite Pastime at the Appalachian Power Park Field. So grab a baseball mitt, enjoy a hot dog, and get ready to cheer!

DAY TRIP TO NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK

If Mother Nature is calling your name during your trip to Charleston, then heed her call and head out to New River Gorge National Park ! This natural marvel resides about two hours from Charleston and is home to one of the oldest rivers in the continental U.S. Visitors will find themselves entranced by the misty valleys and ancient trees that line the trails of this majestic park.

During your trip to New River Gorge, there are a few sites you definitely want to visit. For example, Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the river, and provides a scenic backdrop for photos or a picnic. Or, snag a picture of the New River Gorge Bridge, which stands over 876 feet above the river and is the largest steel span bridge in the Western Hemisphere!

The park is also home to several tiny towns, like Prince and Thurmond. If you’d like to explore the history of Appalachia, you’ll want to check out one of the living history farms like Trump-Lilly or the abandoned Nuttalberg mining town during your park visit.

Standing beautifully above Kanawha River banks, the State Capitol of Charleston is its most striking building. The building’s 300-ft-dome is higher than Washington D.C.’s State Capitol by five feet. The State Capital is the home of the West Virginia Legislature and the acting Governor’s office. How to Get To Charleston, West Virginia 

Yeager Airport (CRW) is located just outside of Charleston.

Charleston, West Virginia is drivable from many cities in nearby states.

Including Pittsburg, PA, Columbus and Cincinnati, OH, Lexington-Fayette, KY, and Greensboro, NC all of which are less than 200 miles from this capital city.

When to Visit Charleston, West Virginia  

Any time of year can be great to visit Charleston.

The Mountain State gets all four seasons with mild weather in each. The most popular time to visit is May – September, the state’s warmest months.

Temperatures rarely exceed 90° in summer, although it’s quite humid, making it feel warmer at times.

Getting Around Town

You do not need a car if staying in downtown Charleston for your entire trip.

The city is small, walkable, and parking is limited.

The city does have Uber and Lyft for times when a car is most convenient. If you plan to visit areas outside of downtown a rental car would be best.

Where To Stay in Charleston  

The Historic District of downtown is the most popular area to stay.

You will find a variety of standard hotels here such as Marriott, Sheraton, Hampton Inn, and Embassy Suites.

There’s also a good selection of charming Airbnb rentals around the downtown area. 

The Best Things To Do In Charleston, West Virginia 

Explore the capitol building & capitol street.

Charleston’s Capitol is a beautiful historic building composed of limestone and equipped with a 293 foot gold dome. 

The picturesque structure sits on the Kanawha River in the heart of downtown.

If you wish to see inside the building guided tours are offered Monday – Saturday.

Tours are 30 minutes long, start times vary seasonally.  

While in the area be sure to explore Capitol Street.

This area offers boutique shops and locally owned restaurants behind old brick storefronts.

Old-fashioned clock posts and cobblestone sidewalks add to the historic charm. If you’re up for libations stop by Mountain State Distillery .

This is a popular, locally-owned distillery sitting just off the Kanawha River.

Hike or Bike in Kanawha State Park 

Kanawha State Park is located only 7 miles outside of downtown Charleston.

The beautiful park has over 25 miles of hiking and biking trails through wooded, dense forest. This is definitely one of Charleston, West Virginia’s hidden gems.

Most trails average 1 -2 miles and are rated easy to moderate making this a great way to spend a half day while visiting Charleston.

The park is especially beautiful in fall when the leaves burst into color.  

Visit the Clay Center

The Clay Center is unique in that it’s a Performance Theatre, Children’s Museum, Art Museum, and Planetarium all under one roof.

The building is beautiful and an excellent way to bring a variety of arts and culture to a smaller metropolitan area such as Charleston.

The center’s mission is to inspire creativity, learning and wonder through arts and science for all people of West Virginia.

The cost varies depending on which segments you plan to visit, but most attractions are under $10/adult.  

Shop the Capitol Market 

The Capitol Market offers up tons of local goods in an old train station turned marketplace.

You’ll find a wide variety of food and locally made merchandise at the large indoor/outdoor marketplace.

While you’re here grab a coffee and browse the merchant stalls or order up a fresh lunch made from seasonal goods. 

Be sure to also check out their events calendar for live music and libations.

The market is open Monday – Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, closed Sunday. 

Take a Day Trip From Charleston and Explore Beautiful West Virginia

If you enjoy charming small towns and a quiet day surrounded by nature you’ll love exploring West Virginia.

Spend a day on the road while discovering the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains… and maybe belt out John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” a few times.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like this is essential when visiting West Virginia.

Haddad Riverfront Park is a 2,500 person amphitheater with great views of the Kanawha River and downtown Charleston.

The venue hosts special events, an epic 4th of July show, and concerts.

Including the free concert series Live on the Levee which hosts free concerts every Friday evening Memorial Day – Labor Day.

Visit New River Gorge National Park

Located just an hour out of town is one of the nation’s newest national parks, New River Gorge .

Officially awarded the national park status in late 2020 this park offers white water rafting, biking, hiking, climbing, and stunning scenic drives through the Appalachian Mountains.

The impressive gorge has been slowly sculpted over time by New River, ironically one of the oldest rivers in the world.

Today ‘the New’ continues to shape one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Appalachians.

It even offers a home to the area’s most diverse population of plants and animals.

This is an exciting addition to the national park system and definitely one of the best things to do in Charleston, West Virginia.
