The world’s first microcassette tape recorder. It used a microcassette tape, which is smaller than a conventional compact cassette, and was equipped with a high-quality microphone. The world’s smallest cassette tape recorder with simple and easy-to-use controls for recording, playback, and rewinding.

The world’s lightest recorder at the time at just 125g. The L200 included a variety of functions such as head start, voice activated recording (VCVA), and fast listen playback. It also won a Good Design Award in it year of release recognizing the engineering achievements.

The S912 won both a Good Design Award and an iF Design Award.

Pioneering recorder as could easily fit in a shirt pocket and at the time release was one of world’s smallest microcassette recorders. It also featured an easy-to-read LCD display depicting tape direction, operation mode and tape counter. Hands free recording was also possible through voice actuation with adjustable sensitivity and remote-control operation (optional) was possible for rewind, record, play and stop functions. The L400 won both a Good Design Award and an iF Design Award for the innovations it brought to market.

Our first digital voice recorder, bringing the range into the digital era with in-built memory. The Note Corder 400 aimed to replace note pads and aid organization by allowing the recording of 40 messages and becoming your daily companion to record directions, phone numbers, and to-do lists. 

Olympus’ first fully fledged digital voice recorder, the D1000 (1997), adopted a digital speech standard (DSS) for its recording format, which was formulated as a global standard for dictation use. This device achieved a high data compression rate while maintaining good sound quality. Compact and lightweight, it also received praise as a product that could be used in business as well as in a wide array of other settings due to its portability.

A unique ergonomic design, thanks to less mechanical restrictions compared to cassette recorders. New features were introduced including alarm recording and schedule folder function.  The V-90 offered several advantages for personal recording, holding up to 297 messages, Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) and Fast Playback features, with Time/Date Stamping.

The first in the VN range which is still going today.  This recorder featured enough memory to record up to 90 minutes of notes (hence the name), large buttons to make it easy to use and a handy built-in clip so it fit neatly in your pocket.

By employing Smart Media, USB connection and an included PC Application, the DS-1 was designed for ease of use to bring efficiency to dictation workflows. The voice files recorded by a DS-1 could be used with voice recognition software and with the included 16MB of media record up 5 hours and 30 minutes of recording.

Also known as the DW-90, this was our first recorder with a highly sensitive directional microphone, proving more accurate recordings than ever before. Compact and lightweight in design, the V-10 could be used in a variety of applications and had an included USB connection kit to enable the transfer of files.

The first professional digital dictation device and part of our digital dictation ecosystem when used with the AS-3000 transcript kit which included a footswitch and DSS Player Pro software to aid transcription of voice files to document. The recorder featured smart media, DSS audio compression and, Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA).  

The world’s first MP3 player to feature WOW 3D sound technology from SRS Labs Inc. and our first recorder to allow music playback through the support of MP3 files. The bundle USB connection kit allowed easy connection to PCs and provided a low-cost solution, for users to be able to both record voice files and enjoy music in one device. The bundles Smart Media card allows for up to 44 hours and 40 minutes of voice recording.

Also known as the W-10, this miniature marvel was able to simultaneously record audio and take photographs (stills) with it built in 0.3 mega-pixel camera.

The world’s First audio recorder with high-quality, WMA* -format recording mode. It featured 64 MB internal flash memory records up to 22 hours 20 minutes of sound.

Featuring a bundled remote control with built-in microphone for enhanced ease of operation.  This was our first record to support Stereo Recording via an external microphone.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the DS-4000 is its “true slide switch” located below the microphone. It’s contoured to the thumb for smooth control of record, stop, play and review functions all with the same switch.

Also known as the V-20, it incorporated a novel feature which allows the battery unit to be detached from the recorder and plugged directly into a USB port. USB storage-class support enabled it to be used as a portable storage device for documents, images, and other types of files.

An innovative design that featured a removable stereo microphone. It was also our first recorder that allowed you to download and listen to podcasts.

The DirecRec 2000 first USB handheld microphone that allowed real-time dictation into a PC.  A legacy we continue today with the RecMic II.

This linear PCM recorder is compatible with the linear PCM format, an uncompressed digital recording format, and can record with 96kHz/24-BIT sound quality that exceeds that of CDs. Two high-quality microphones positioned at a 90-degree angle on either side of the recorder enable recording of musical instrument performances and bird calls with ultra realistic sound quality. The two microphones are positioned at a 90-degree angle on the left and right sides of the recorder.

Our first professional recorder to feature DSS Pro high-quality sound standard to improve voice recognition. This product was also security-conscious, supporting voice file encryption and fingerprint recognition. 

The next generation DirecRec USB microphone improved upon its predecessor adding a trackball for full mouse control whilst recording.

Setting new industry standards with 256-BIT encryption, an independently housed microphone for improved speech recognition, and enhanced battery life.  This was also our first recorder to feature a colour screen no less.

Combining the high-quality audio recording synonymous of the LS series with the ability to capture HD video.  Designed for blogging musicians, gig enthusiasts and journalists alike.  This really did bring Hollywood to your pocket.

The RecMic II improved speech recognition accuracy with the introduction of our 2-microphone noise cancelling system. Designed for medical practitioners in mind, it featured the unique POLYGIENE® Antimicrobial coating to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae.

Our next generation in professional dictation machines, it’s Intelligent 2-Microphone System used unique audio beamforming algorithms to improved speech recognition even in the most challenging of environments.  Coupled with it’s built-in WIFI allowing you to email dictation wirelessly your transcriptionists.

The launch of our first OM SYSTEM hybrid audio recorder and camera microphone.  Improving on our LS PCM better-than-CD-quality audio capture devices, we introduced 3 directional microphones and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless monitoring and smartphone remote control.

A Mountain of a Machine: A Review of the Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder

When a product comes on the mainstream market that is actually user friendly to people who are blind, word travels fast in our community. So it has been with the new Olympus DS-30, DS-40, and DS-50 digital voice recorders, released early in 2007. Although not intended specifically for use by people who are unable to read the display, these small but mighty player-recorders are extremely, although not completely, accessible for those without vision. The three models vary only slightly, the primary difference being storage capacity. The DS-30 offers 256 MB, the DS-40 offers 512 MB, and the DS-50 offers 1 GB (up to 275 hours) of stored music, books, podcasts, or personal recordings or a mix of all of them. For this evaluation, the DS-40 with 512 MB was used.

What It Looks Like and What It Can Do

The Olympus DS-40 presents a sleek, esthetically pleasing, package. Measuring about 4.25 inches long, 1 inch wide, and less than half an inch thick, it can easily fit into a shirt pocket or small handbag. The package includes a USB cable for connecting to your computer, earbuds, and an optional wrist strap. It runs for what seems like a long time on two AA batteries. All the buttons are easily discernible by touch and are logically arranged. On the front surface, the upper half is devoted to the visual display. Below the display are the buttons for folder selection, menus, and general navigation. On the right side of the unit are tactilely distinct buttons for Record, Stop, Play, and Power, and on the left side is a sliding switch for setting the microphone's sensitivity. The unit has a small, built-in speaker, but to appreciate the superb stereo sound, headphones are recommended.

One distinction that sets the Olympus DS series apart from other handheld players is the range of material it plays. The unit can play both MP3 and WMA files and podcasts and is compatible with Audible.com. And, as I mentioned earlier, its sound quality for both music and spoken word is outstanding. Where the unit shines most brightly, however, is its capacity as a tiny digital recorder.

The Olympus has its own stereo microphone and, although the microphone can be detached and an external microphone can be connected in its place, it would rarely be necessary to do so. There are three microphone settings—dictation, lecture, and conference—and with these settings properly adjusted, the Olympus delivers an excellent recording for any purpose, from a personal memo to a public lecture, performance, or discussion among a small group of people. I tested it in these and many other settings and found the quality of every recording to be consistently and delightfully clear.

Voice-guided Menus

A pleasant female voice provides oral feedback for most, but not all, menu and navigation functions. When you scroll through the menu options, all are spoken. From the menu you can set recording levels, microphone sensitivity, playback speed, volume and speed of the voice guidance itself, and several other options. You cannot, however, take advantage of the alarm feature, the time and date setting, or the timer for when to start and stop a prescheduled recording. With both Voice Guidance and Beep Tones turned on, it is relatively easy to adjust all the settings to your preference.

The unit comes with folders already set up. These folders are simply labeled Folder A through E, plus folders specifically intended for Audible, Music, and Podcasts. To transfer music or other files to the Olympus, all you need to do is connect the unit via its USB cable and copy the desired files using Windows Explorer. Transferring books from Audible.com is also straightforward. After you select the Olympus as your desired device in your Audible.com account, you can transfer the materials with a few keystrokes.

A Few Niceties

A few random features on these units warrant bonus points. A Hold button on the side of the unit locks the current mode in place. If you are recording a lengthy lecture or meeting, for example, pressing Record and then Hold will ensure continuous recording until Hold is released and Stop is pressed. Similarly, the Hold feature can be used as a kind of standby mode when the unit is not in use, thus preventing it from recording accidentally when it is resting in a pocket or bag.

Menu options allow you to select an entire folder to be played (a preferable option for listening to music) or only one file at a time (more useful when listening to individual recordings you have made or segments of an audio book). And speaking of audio books, Olympus resumes where you left off. If, in other words, you are listening to a thriller today in the Audible folder and then switch tomorrow to Folder A to record a meeting and Folder B to make personal notes, the Olympus will go back to the point you last heard when you finally return to your book. To erase a file, you simply press the Erase button (a tiny round button on the lower front that cannot be confused with any other button) and then press the equivalent of an Up arrow to begin the process. Only then will the Olympus erase the file and announce "Erase finished" when the job is complete.

The playback speed can be set, in the menus, from .5 to .875 for slow and 1.25 to 1.5 for fast. Once the speed is set, it can be altered on the fly by pressing the Playback key until the desired speed is reached. It has three positions—slow, normal, and fast—and just cycles through these positions with each press of the button. This feature, when used in tandem with the Fast Forward and Rewind features, makes reviewing a particular passage especially easy and efficient.

The Bottom Line

The Olympus DS series of digital recorders are not 100% accessible to a user who is blind, but come closer to the mark than any other commercially available product of their kind. They offer clear speech and easy navigation, sophisticated yet simple recording capabilities, and outstanding sound quality. It is important to note that these units do not have a built-in text-to-speech feature, so playing computer files, other than audio ones, is not an option. If you are looking for an attractive, compact device that performs well in all kinds of recording settings and plays music, audio books, and podcasts to boot, the Olympus DS series has carved a unique niche of excellence.

充実したノイズ除去機能 雑音の多い大人数での講義や打ち合わせ、屋外での録音など、さまざまな状況に応じて使い分けられる多彩なノイズ除去機能を搭載しました。

・ローカットフィルター機能： 録音時に300Hz以下の低域ノイズをカットし、音声をよりクリアに録音します。主に空調機器やプロジェクタの動作音が気になるときなどに効果があります。

・ノイズキャンセル機能： 再生時に、雑音の入った音声からノイズに相当する部分を推定して抽出し低減させる雑音抑圧技術 ※3 を採用しています。この技術は携帯電話などにも利用されており、乗り物や雑踏の中など、ノイズが多い環境下で録音された音声ファイルでも、人の声をよりクリアに、聞き取りやすい音質で再生することができます。

・音声フィルター機能： 再生時または「早聞き・遅聞き」再生時に、周囲の雑音部分が含まれる低音域と高音域をカットし、目的の音声をよりクリアに強調します。

着脱式ステレオマイクによる高感度録音 大口径で高感度のステレオマイクを採用しており、大人数による会議でもしっかりと臨場感あふれる音を録音することができます。また、マイクは着脱式となっているので、取り外して専用リモコン（「DS-50」のみ同梱。コード長80cm）のマイクジャックに差し込んでリモコンステレオマイクとしてお使いいただくことができ、音源に向けて、狙った音を確実に録音することが可能です。

2. 語学学習・書き起こしに便利な機能を満載 0.5倍速から1.5倍速の間で、再生スピードを9段階で選択できる「早聞き･遅聞き」機能を搭載しています。語学学習で聞き取れなかった部分をじっくり聞きなおしたり、時間のないときに会議の内容を早聞きしたりするなど、様々な使い方が可能です。 また、

• 任意の一部分を自由に指定して繰り返し再生できる「部分リピート再生」機能
• 設定した間隔だけスキップ（送る）したり、逆スキップ（戻る）して、目的の再生位置にすばやく到達したり、短いフレーズを繰り返し再生することができる「スキップ/逆スキップ再生」機能
• インデックスマークをつけることで、ファイルの早送り・早戻しや頭出し操作で記録された位置に移動することができる「インデックスマーク」機能
• など、語学学習や原稿の書き起こしに便利な機能を豊富に搭載しています。

3. 「ポッドキャストボタン」の搭載、および同梱ソフトウェアとの連動によるポッドキャスト対応

現在、インターネット上には、ニュースや音楽、語学教材のほか、多種多様なポッドキャスト番組が公開されていますが、「DS-50」「DS-40」は、ポッドキャストを楽しむことのできるコンテンツプレーヤーとしての機能も十分に備えています。

ポッドキャスト配信サイトの登録用アイコン、またはRSS等のタグを、同梱の専用ソフトウェア「DSS Player Version 7」の「ポッドキャストフォルダー」にドラッグ＆ドロップするだけで、お気に入りの番組を登録できます。一度登録すれば、そのサイトで新しい番組が配信されると自動的に番組をダウンロードすることが可能となります。また、ダウンロードされた番組は、「DS-50」「DS-40」をパソコンに接続するだけで、自動的にICレコーダー本体に転送できます。

ICレコーダー本体には、「ポッドキャストボタン」を搭載。このボタンを長押しすることにより、瞬時に「ポッドキャストフォルダー」に移動することができ、コンテンツ選びを簡単に行えます。 また、当社｢ポッドキャスト｣配信サイト http://VoiceTrek.jp を11月27日に新設し、ラジオ英会話講座でおなじみの大杉正明先生による英語学習コンテンツの配信も予定しております（毎週月曜日配信予定　全20回）。

乾電池式なのがよかった

オリンパスイメージング、高音質を追求したICレコーダー『Voice-Trek DS-50、DS-40』を発表

オリンパスイメージング(株)は14日、高音質での録音・再生機能を重視したICレコーダーの新シリーズ『Voice-Trek DS-50』『Voice-Trek DS-40』を23日に発売すると発表した。価格はオープンプライス。

DS-50/40は高音質での録音機能を重視。最も高音質の“STXQ(ステレオ超高音質)”モードでの録音時は、50～19kHzの広い周波数帯域での録音を可能としている。またノイズ除去の機能として、300Hz以下の低域ノイズをカットする“ローカットフィルタ機能”も備えている。録音フォーマットはWMAで、メモリー容量1GBのDS-50では、STXQモード時で約17時間25分、LP(長時間)モードでは273時間15分も録音できる(DS-40は512MB)。またMP3オーディオの再生にも対応する。

また再生時の音質も向上させるべく、『 Voice-Trek G-10 』にも採用されたノイズキャンセル機能を搭載。音声からノイズを抽出して低減させ、聞き取りやすくする。また雑音が含まれる低音/高音域をカットして、音声を聞き取りやすくする“音声フィルタ機能”も備える。

語学学習や音声の聴き起こしに便利な、“早聞き・遅聞き機能”を備える。これは再生スピードを0.5倍速から1.5倍速まで、再生スピードを9段階で変更できる機能である。

付属のWindows用ソフト“DSS Player Ver.7”と組み合わせた、ポッドキャスト対応機能も特徴である。ポッドキャスト配信サイトの登録用アイコンやRSSタグ等をDSS Playerにドラッグ＆ドロップで登録でき、更新データを自動でダウンロードできる。ダウンロードしたデータは、DS-50/40をパソコンに接続すると、自動で転送される。またレコーダー側にも、ポッドキャストのデータフォルダに簡単に移動する“ポッドキャストボタン”も備えている。このほかに、ポッドキャスト配信サイト“http://VoiceTrek.jp”を27日に開設。“NHKラジオ英会話”の講師、大杉正明氏による英語学習コンテンツを無料で配信する予定(毎週月曜日配信、全20回予定)。

同社のICレコーダーは、G-10やVシリーズのようにICレコーダー本体にパソコンと直結するためのUSBコネクターを備えているものが多いが、DS-50/40は一般的なICレコーダーと同様に、USBケーブルでパソコンと接続するデザインをとっている。録音用のステレオマイクは本体と一体になる形状で、本体頂部に直結する。またDS-50に付属するリモコンを使えば、本体からマイクを離して録音操作を行なえる(DS-40は別売り)。

バッテリーには単4電池を2本使用。重量は約80g(マイクとアルカリ電池含む)。アルカリ電池使用時で最大32時間の録音が可能である。予想実売価格は、DS-50が3万円前後、DS-40が2万3000円前後。
