Everything You Need to Know About Marriott’s Voyage Program

For a college student who’s looking to build a hospitality career, Marriott’s Voyage Program is the gold standard. Scratch that — for a college student who’s looking to kickstart their post-grad career, regardless of industry, Marriott’s Voyage Program is platinum.

This isn’t an oversell, let me walk you through it.

Meet Max. Max is entering their senior year of college as a Comms major and has no idea what’s happening post-graduation. Max wants to enter the workforce, to find a full-time, grown-up job, but has no idea where to apply. Max likes working with people and is *really* good at solving programs — they know this from their beloved side gig of working as a restaurant server — but is unsure of how those skills translate in the “real world.”

Max has never considered hospitality as their full-time career (and between you and me, doesn’t even know that it’s a field of study), but at their college’s career fair runs into the Marriott table. A very enthusiastic and patient recruiter explains Voyage — a 12-month program for recent college grads that places them in one of hundreds of Marriott hotels around the country in a manager-level position with full pay and benefits, including paid relocation if they’re choosing to move away from home.

Max is intrigued — could this be the perfect first step in Max’s career? — and heads back to their apartment and applies for the program.

A mere 15-minutes later, Max gets an email prompt to complete the video interview portion. Still looking sharp from the career fair and feeling inspired, Max goes for it and records answers to questions like, “Why are you a fit for this role?” and clicks submit.

Now exhausted but psyched for what’s to come, Max calls it a night.

Over the next week, Max hears back from the same patient, enthusiastic recruiter — they made it to the next round! Per the recruiter’s instructions, Max sends their preferences for location (beach-adjacent, please!) and, department (F&B or Front Desk sound like a fit, given Max’s skillset). Then, Max gets prompted to complete a skills assessment. Taking advantage of schoolwork being light at the moment, Max finishes all the steps and gets back to the recruiter promptly, which seems to help things move pretty fast.

After that, the recruiter schedules a virtual interview for a few days later — thank goodness, because Max (an admitted hospitality newbie) needs time to research and prepare. Max has also never used Microsoft Teams before, so they practice a few times with their roommate to get the lighting and background just right.

That preparation pays off, and Max crushes the interview.

Just one week later… Max has an offer! The position: An F&B Voyager at a beach-adjacent hotel, just as requested! Wow, a real, full-time job at a Fortune 500 company with salary, benefits and full relocation support — Marriott is even introducing Max to other Voyagers in the new city for potential future roommates. Max accepts.

It’s only October and graduation isn’t until May — and Max already has an actual, grown-up job lined up. Life is good.

Jump forward a few years, and Max is the Director of Operations at a different hotel with even better beach views. Max has been promoted a handful of times, is very satisfied with their comp and benefits (especially being able to land cheap hotel rates with the Marriott associate travel discount ), adores the team culture, and has even been nominated for a corporate leadership development program by their boss. Life is good.

Okay, we’ve convinced you — the Marriott Voyage Program is the best. Now, to walk through all the nitty-gritty details like salary, benefits, eligibility and more, we tapped two experts for the U.S. and Canada Voyage Program:

Let’s get through those FAQs. Keep in mind that these answers are specific to U.S. and Canada.

When did Marriott Voyage Program start? How long has it been around?

Sarah: Marriott has had a management training program for a long time and has been through many iterations. Voyage grew out of all of that in 2012. We realized that the training program we were providing was not sufficient; we needed to give students a true training and onboarding experience that would help grow them into great leaders.

Is Voyage an internship? If not, how is it different?

Sarah: It’s important to note: Voyage is NOT an internship. As a Voyager, you’re a manager — in most cases, you will have people that you supervise on a daily basis. You’ll perform management tasks and be seen as a leader on property. We like to say it’s the bridge between college and the “real world” — your first true job once you’ve graduated.

Is this a global program? Can I be a Voyager in French wine country if I currently live in Idaho?

Sarah: Voyage is offered in over 50 countries. However, it’s important to note that in order to work in ANY country, you require work authorization there. (We do not sponsor work visas for the Voyage Program here in the U.S.) We recommend that you always start Voyage where you already have that work authorization, which is likely your “home” country.

Who is eligible to be a Voyager?

Sarah: All Voyagers must have work authorization in the country for which they’re applying AND either be a current senior who graduates with a bachelor’s degree prior to the program starting or be a recent graduate who has received their bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months. It’s a small window to qualify for Voyage, because it is truly meant to be an entry-level leadership position.

How long is the Marriott Voyage Program?

Sarah: The Voyage Program is typically 12 months in the U.S. (though it can run longer) and Canada and can be up to 18 months internationally.

How much does the Marriott Voyage Program pay?

Sarah: It varies based on the location and discipline you choose, but no one makes less than $45,450 annually. You can make up to $76,230 if you are in NYC and in accounting.

What type of schedule can a Voyager anticipate?

Sarah: Typically, Voyagers are scheduled for 40-hour work weeks, but can sometimes work a little more or a little less than that depending on the hotel’s business demand. All Voyagers are also eligible for overtime, so if you work more, you’ll make more! Because hotels are a 24/7 operation, most Voyagers can expect to work weekends and holidays—it’s just the nature of our business.

What types of benefits do Marriott Voyagers receive?

Sarah: As full-time Marriott associates, you’re eligible for all the same benefits as any other full-time associate . What’s more: we pay to relocate you to your city of choice, help you find roommates before day one, and for certain departments, provide sign-on bonuses (looking at you, Culinary and Engineering).

Are there remote Voyage roles or all in-person?

Sarah: The heart of our business is hotel operations—hotels can’t function without great customer service and a strong housekeeping team, which requires associates to be in person to make it work. Therefore, 99% of all Voyage roles are in-person. One exception currently is a Sales Voyager, but Sales Voyagers make up 1% of all our Voyage hires, making them incredibly competitive. Getting your foot in the door with Marriott is just the first part of your journey; once part of our team, you can easily change departments in the future. (Don’t believe us? When does the Marriott Voyage Program officially start?

Sarah: We have start dates in January, February, June, July, and a small handful in September. A new Voyager is eligible to start their position following graduation. For example, if you graduate in May, you could start in either June or July, depending on any summer vacation plans.

How many recent grads get hired every year as Voyagers?

Michael: In the 2022-23 academic calendar, we received 6,700+ applications and hired 600+ Voyagers.

Is it only for hospitality majors?

Michael: No way. Disciplines include Rooms Operations, Front Office, Food & Beverage, Event Management, Accounting & Finance, Culinary, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Revenue Management, Sales, Housekeeping, and Banquets.

Sarah: For culinarians, we are seeking students who have a culinary arts degree, or have significant experience “working the line” if their degree is in another field of study. Culinary Voyagers can expect to be working in the kitchen, so having proper knife skills and training is a must. For facilities management engineers (we use the term “engineer” to describe the people who keep the hotel in working order, anything from lightbulbs to fire alarms), we are seeking students who have previous experience or a degree in facilities management — being able to fix an HVAC system or a water main break will come in handy! For accountants, we are seeking students who are accounting majors or accounting minors. While we do accept other majors, those who don’t have an accounting background may not be interested in the Accounting & Finance Voyage Program since it is managerial accounting based.

What happens over the course of the Program?

Michael: During your Voyage, you will be able to immerse yourself in the operations of your specific discipline and in other disciplines through mini-departmental rotations. Though you will be able to have some hands-on in multiple departments, this is not a rotational training program as you will be spending 95% of your time in your specific discipline. To supplement your hands-on development, you are assigned the Voyage curriculum which allows you to learn specific discipline and departmental training. In addition, as a Voyager, you have formal monthly rap sessions with your Property Coach (direct manager) and formal quarterly rap sessions with your Property Champion (executive hotel member). These rap sessions help ensure that you have both the support and knowledge in your program to be successful in your new Marriott career!

Les destinations les mieux notées aux Etats-Unis

Les Etats-Unis étant une vaste terre aux limites presque infinies, la plupart des visiteurs se concentrent sur une région donnée, que ce soit sur la cote ouest des USA , au sud-ouest, sur les plages de Floride ou de Californie, ou les régions périphériques comme Hawaï et l’Alaska. Le Grand Canyon

Cette incroyable attraction naturelle est l’un des endroits les plus visités à l'ouest des Etats-Unis. Sculpté par le fleuve Colorado, le Grand Canyon pénètre profondément dans le paysage, créant des falaises et des corniches spectaculaires. Tenez-vous sur le bord du canyon pour voir le sol à un kilomètre en dessous et contempler par-dessus les crêtes et falaises qui s’étendent à perte de vue. La Rive-Sud est le côté le plus visité du parc national du Grand Canyon, avec un véritable centre touristique, un service de navette régulier en haute saison et une passerelle qui longe le canyon. Si vous recherchez l'originalité pendant votre voyage, vous pouvez opter pour la Rive-Nord qui abrite également des points de vue incroyables et offre une perspective différente. Cette section du parc n’est pas accessible de novembre à mai, c’est-à-dire pendant l’hiver.

Les chutes du Niagara

Situées le long de la frontière que partagent l’Amérique et le Canada, les chutes du Niagara constituent l’une des cascades les plus célèbres de la planète. L’eau du lac Érié se jette dans le lac Ontario au-dessus de ces chutes d’eau massives. La quantité d’eau qui passe au-dessus des chutes est réduite en hiver, lorsque la centrale hydroélectrique locale nécessite plus d’eau pour son alimentation. Mais rassurez-vous il y a très peu de chance que vous voyez la différence pendant votre voyage. Les chutes de Niagara sont en vérité composées de trois chutes : les Horseshoe Falls (la plus grande section située au Canada), les American Falls (sur le côté américain) et les Bridal Veil Falls (situées à côté des chutes américaines).

La Statue de la Liberté

Symbole universel de la liberté, la Statue de la Liberté est l’icône la plus connue des Etats-Unis. Offerte il y a près de 140 ans par la France en signe d’amitié pour célébrer le centenaire de la Déclaration d'indépendance américaine, elle a fait un long voyage à bord de la frégate Isère depuis le port du Havre en France avant d'arriver à New-York Érigée à 93 m dans le port de New York, la statue se voit de loin, à partir de divers points de la ville, en particulier dans le Battery Park. Pour visiter directement le monument, il est possible d’acheter différents types de billets qui permettent d’accéder aux différents niveaux du site. Pour ne rien rater de l’attraction, envisagez de réserver vos billets à l’avance car c'est une des attractions phares de New-York !

La Maison Blanche

C’est la résidence officielle du président des Etats-Unis, qui figure elle-même sur toutes les listes de curiosités à voir à Washington. Cet édifice historique a été le foyer de tous les présidents sauf George Washington. Il a été construit par James Hoban en 1792 et, après avoir été incendié par les forces britanniques en 1814, il a été reconstruit en 1818. Vous pouvez visiter gratuitement la Maison Blanche pendant votre voyage, mais pensez seulement à réserver au moins 3 semaines à l’avance. Des règles de sécurité strictes sont toujours en vigueur dans cette partie de Washington DC.

Le parc national de Yellowstone

Pendant votre voyage sur la côte ouest, pourquoi ne pas vous rendre dans ce parc qui abrite un volcan géant ancien et qui a abouti à un paysage spectaculaire et à des phénomènes naturels impressionnants. Geysers et sources d’eau chaude, ainsi que chutes d’eau incroyables le long de la rivière Yellowstone ne sont que quelques-unes des curiosités qui attirent des milliers de touristes chaque année. Un des plus anciens parcs americains , le parc national de Yellowstone abrite également toutes sortes d’animaux sauvages, dont des bisons en captivité, des mouflons, des antilopes, des ours noirs et des grizzlis.

Le Walt Disney World Resort

Ce méga parc d'attraction d'Orlando est la première attraction familiale du pays, accueillant des jeunes et des moins jeunes depuis des décennies. Ouvert en 1971, le Walt Disney World Resort a réussi à conserver sa pertinence et son attrait pour les enfants et même de nombreux adultes au fil des ans. Le Walt Disney World Resort englobe non seulement les différents parcs à thème, mais aussi des parcs aquatiques, le Downtown Disney avec des boutiques et des théâtres, et bien plus encore. On April 8, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in France.

This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. Highlights of the France 2024 Key Hotel List

The Palaces: A Distinctly French High Luxury

Expect: Butler service, high quality spas, and sumptuous spare-no-expense design. The government of France itself bestows an official Palace designation, with French tourism officials judging the most luxurious hotels in France to ensure they provide particular amenities and services (a spa, a multilingual check-in desk, a concierge service, etc.) and an excellent representation of the country. Out of 31 official palace hotels in France, many earned at least one Key — and several make up our Three Key hotels. Of the palaces that earned at least One Key, you’ll find a mix of the most historic ( the Four Seasons George V ), the most modern ( Le K2 Palace ), and the newer takes on the traditional form ( La Réserve Paris ). The Country Darlings: Chateaus and Vineyards

Our first annual list of Key hotels in France confirms the supremacy of these two mainstays: chateau and vineyard accommodations. Look to Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Château de la Gaude as particular examples of Two Key hotels that combine both. Or look just outside Bordeaux, to Les Sources de Caudalie . Built on a natural hot spring and operated by the famous Caudalie beauty brand, it’s a particularly fascinating Three Key property on the grounds of the Château Smith Haut-Lafitte vineyard.

Full hotels, emergency plans: Cities along eclipse path brace for chaos

Tens of thousands of stargazers will crowd downtown Dallas to witness April's total solar eclipse . Campground lodging and local hotels are nearly sold out in Erie, Pennsylvania. Indianapolis is hosting one of the largest watch parties in the nation alongside the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

And many hotel rooms and vacation rentals on the path are either sold out or listed at sky-high prices.

City officials along the eclipse's path of totality – a narrow stretch of land across the U.S. where people could see the moon block the sun's surface – are counting down the days until visitors flock to their towns and jam roads to see the rare natural phenomenon, they told USA TODAY.

Several city officials told USA TODAY that they've been planning for years for the massive crowds that are set to descend on the towns. And they're anticipating a chaotic weekend.

"We're expecting thousands and thousands of visitors on the shores of Lake Erie – between 56,000 and 200,000 visitors – which is an unprecedented amount," said Robert Lee, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania town.

Officials in Erie are even encouraging people to stay a few extra days after the eclipse to avoid gridlock traffic .

People who visit places along the path of totality could see the moon block the face of the sun, if the sky is clear . Visitors can expect crowded watch parties, congested roads and public safety officials to be present.

Hotels, rentals: 'Gearing up to welcome the influx of sky gazers'

Hotels, short-term vacation rentals and campgrounds along the path of totality are expensive and selling quickly.

"We’ve never heard of anything like this where there are people coming in from all over the country. This is pretty unique – Hotels are almost sold out," said Shalissa Perry, the chief marketing officer for Downtown Dallas.

The packed hotels are especially unique because it's rare for rooms to sell out on Sunday and Monday evenings, said Chris Gahl, the executive vice president of Visit Indy.

"The event is on Monday and it allows for hotels to fill up on Sunday night and Monday night which is great from an economic standpoint," he said.

Short-term vacation rentals are seeing a spike in both renters and lodgers. Data from the vacation rental company Airbnb shows rentals in Austin, Dallas, Indianapolis and Montreal are filling up the fastest in the U.S.

"North American cities lying in the path of totality are gearing up to welcome the influx of sky gazers," reads a recent news release from the company.

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, some hotels sold out nearly a year in advance.

Traffic and emergency plans

Massive crowds make for massive traffic jams, and city officials said they've been working for years to help ease the coming gridlock.

Many town officials on the path of totality consulted city leaders who were on the path of totality during the 2017 total eclipse to inform their planning for this year's event, they told USA TODAY.

"We have been researching, studying and planning for the total solar eclipse for the last two years," Gahl said.

Travelers to the eclipse's path of totality can especially expect hours of traffic after the spectacle in the sky concludes. Many people will be trying to exit at once, according to an analysis of the 2017 solar eclipse from Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication.

Congestion during the last solar eclipse on big interstates and rural backroads lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to the analysis. The analysis's author Jonathan Upchurch said most sky gazers traveled to the path of totality by car.

Transportation departments in several states are warning people about road safety precautions ahead of the event. Texas state officials, for example,  are warning drivers  to be alert for a slew of pedestrians on the roads and telling drivers they should not wear eclipse glasses , which block out most light, while driving.

"There will be a lot of people coming in from different areas," said Travis Houston, an interim director for Dallas's Office of Emergency Management team. Dallas police and fire departments are also prepared for emergencies or crime that could come with the large crowds, Houston said.

People who live on the path of totality can sky gaze from their backyards to avoid traffic and driving hazards, Houston said.

These hotels go all-out with luxury pet amenities

Luxury hotels are great. Some have incredible spas where you can revive your skin and spirit, while others offer rooftop infinity pools with sweeping vistas for miles and miles.

These days, hotels aren't just for people, though. The best ones have wised up to the fact that more and more travelers have pets (thanks, COVID-19), and many of those people want to travel with their furry companions.

Many pet owners aren't simply looking for a hotel room with a dog bed tossed in the corner, though; they're looking for hotels and resorts that let their — let's all just say it — most-loved family members join in on every part of the experience.

With that in mind, we've gathered some of the most over-the-top experiences, packages and programs for pets we could find. From a Southern California resort offering puppy paddleboarding lessons to a hotel that will treat your dog like an A-list celebrity, here are our favorite luxury pet amenities worth planning a trip around.

Pampered pups at The Plaza

Last year, my corgi, Splenda, got to be wined and dined at The Plaza in New York City — one of the world's most famous hotels.

With the hotel's Pampered Pup Package ($195), your fur baby can experience a multi-tier tray of dog macarons, food and water bowls (with bottles of Evian), a plush dog bed and a Plaza dog bathrobe. (You can even get the robe custom-fitted to your dog for an extra fee if you contact the hotel 30 days before your arrival.)

But the best treat, in my and Splenda's experience, was all the love that the incredible staff and fellow guests at this iconic Fairmont property gave to the pets.

The Plaza welcomes two dogs of any size at no additional fee.

Hermes, Tiffany and wine at the Conrad

For some pups, money is no object. When those dogs find themselves in the nation's capital, they insist their parents book them at the Conrad Washington DC for the $5,999 " Lab of Luxury " package.

Sure, it's not cheap, but it does include two nights in a "bark-view" suite (or park-view for us humans), a Hermes collar and leash, a Tiffany & Co. water bowl and pet-friendly treats from chef Nelson Lopez. To get out on the town, the package also includes a picnic with car service to take you and your furry companions on a tour of three dog-friendly wineries in the area, a photo session at CityCenterDC and a $500 donation to the Humane Society of the United States.

Dogs up to 150 pounds are allowed at the Conrad Washington DC for a fee of $75. Luckily, that fee is included in the Lab of Luxury package.

A doggy playlist and pet-friendly headphones

The new Hotel Swexan in Dallas is an oasis for pets (and pet owners). It even has an on-staff "pet adventures and wellness specialist," Crystal Montero, who oversees the property's pet offerings.

Beyond offering the basics like dog beds and treats, guests can also take advantage of 24-hour dog walking services and pet-friendly spot recommendations in Dallas. You can even borrow a pair of pet-friendly Bluetooth headphones, so your dog can listen to the hotel's curated "doggy playlist" to relax after a long day of exploring.

Hotel Swexan charges a $150 pet fee and allows dogs less than 35 pounds.

Puppy paddleboard lessons in San Diego

In San Diego, paddleboarding isn't just for those of us with two legs. At Kona Kai San Diego on Shelter Island, pets and pet parents can enjoy a day out on the water learning the ins and outs (and most importantly, safety) of paddleboarding in the resort's private marina.

After a fun day in the sun, take advantage of other pet-friendly perks like a 25-minute "Furry Flex" muscle stretch massage from a certified pet massage therapist. Your pup can enjoy dinner from the Pooch Provisions Plates menu at Vessel Restaurant, featuring dishes like Pawnut Butter Crunch and Carrot Sticks ($5).

Two dogs up to 65 pounds are welcome at Kona Kai San Diego for a fee of $100 for up to three nights or $150 for four to seven nights.

A pet massage in Cabo

At The Cape, a Thompson Hotel — and one of TPG's favorite points hotels in the area — the Currents Spa understands that even dogs get stressed. They know pups have some kinks here and there that need to be worked out, especially on vacation.

That's why the World of Hyatt-participating property offers the "Sun, Sand and Paws Massage," an exclusive 25-minute in-room massage for your pooch that costs $149. Sure, that might sound expensive, but can you really put a price on the well-being of your very best friend?

One pet is allowed to stay at The Cape for a fee of $100 per night.

Private gardens and luxury clothes in Rome

At the Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel , dogs have it made — seriously. With the hotel's V.I.P. (Very Important Pets) program , which costs 35 euros ($38) per day, dogs have access to the hotel's private 15-acre Mediterranean park and even a dog walker who can take them to galavant around it.

While pup parents hit the spa, the hotel can arrange to take their pooch to La Dmous Aventina, a local dog spa, for a high-end treatment. And, because Rome is one of the world's fashion capitals, the hotel can arrange for a cashmere sweater embellished with your dog's name on it, waiting in the room.

At this hotel, pets are also welcome to join their owners at the Tiepolo Lounge & Terrace or the Imperial Club. But even pets know that the best meal at a hotel is one served in bed; this Waldorf's in-room pet menu includes a two-course meal for 28 euros ($30) with options like a pasta terrine, tuna and veggie starter followed by lamb and rice as a main.

Small dogs are allowed for 35 euros ($38) per day.

'Pup-arazzi' treat dogs like Hollywood stars

The Foundry Hotel Asheville, Curio Collection by Hilton knows that in pet owners' eyes, their fur baby is a star. That's why the hotel offers the " Pup-arazzi Adventure Package ," which includes pet-friendly accommodations and a one-hour pup photo session with a local photographer to document your trip to share with the world.

The hotel can also set you up with pet-friendly hikes and ensure that owners are loaded up with treats; the hotel even includes a voucher for a dog bath for a post-hike cleanup. Furry guests will also receive goodies from Patton Avenue Pet Company, like treats and a dog beer (because it's Asheville).

The package starts at $460. Otherwise, dogs of all sizes are welcome for a fee of $75 per stay.

Doggie donburi for the four-legged foodie

These days, it's not rare to find hotels offering gourmet dog menus, but few have made dishes so pretty they could snag a spot on a human foodie's Instagram grid.

In Savannah, the chic Perry Lane Hotel knows exactly what every discerning pup wants: a colorful bowl of doggie donburi made up of juicy grilled chicken breast, cucumbers and green cabbage. But that meal doesn't have to be served in the room; you can order it at the pet-friendly hotel rooftop bar and lounge, Peregrin. Savannah-bound pups can also expect a Perry Lane bandana, bowls, a bed and treats from the local pet bakery Oliver Bentley.

Dogs up to 50 pounds are welcome at the Perry Lane Hotel for a fee of $150 plus $20 per night.

A pet-friendly reiki session in Santa Fe

At the Auberge Resort Bishop's Lodge in Santa Fe, the Land of Enchantment has a beautiful way to connect with your pet on a spiritual level: through the Japanese healing art of reiki.

For $280, you and your pet can opt for the 60-minute "Animal Life Force" ritual, best described by the Stream Dance Spa :

"During this insightful session, our 'helper' holds space with the animals as they share helpful information for their humans to know in order to better the animal's physical & emotional well-being. A pre- and post-consultation with animal guardians is part of the session in addition to a sentimental take-away."

I'm not sure I can tell you what that means exactly, but I'm told it's great to help with animals suffering from trauma, stress or injury.

Two dogs are allowed at Bishop's Lodge for a fee of $100.

Pet-friendly cabanas in Cancun

While many hotels are pet-friendly, pets are often not actually allowed to go many places outside of the room.

That's not the case at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun , where dogs can hang out by the pool and lounge in a cabana to soak up some warm Yucatan sunshine. As part of the "Rover Night" package, very good doggos can roam around the property, order canine-friendly food from a special pet menu and then cozy up in a special dog bed waiting in the room.

Dogs up to 50 pounds are welcome at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun for a fee of $150.

I paid $530 for one night in Hawaii's famous pink hotel. I was so excited, but I wouldn't stay there again.

• On a recent Hawaii trip, I stayed in the most affordable room I could find at The Royal Hawaiian.
• I spent $530 total to stay one night at the iconic pink beachfront hotel. 
• I enjoyed the location and its famous mai tais but found my room to be dated.

My mother and I recently visited Hawaii for the first time .

While there, we stayed at The Royal Hawaiian, nicknamed the "Pink Palace of the Pacific," a place I'd long dreamed of seeing in real life.

The iconic 528-room hotel is famed for its pink facade and mai-tai cocktails. It also happens to be one of the first hotels in downtown Honolulu in the heart of all the action of Waikiki Beach.

Plus, The Royal Hawaiian is part of Marriott International's Luxury Collection , meaning it's considered an especially world-renowned and unique spot.

With all that in mind, my expectations were high for the five-star resort — but I'm not sure my stay was worth it.

I booked a room in the hotel's Historic Wing.

I chose to book the cheapest room available , which ended up being a standard room with two double beds in the hotel's Historic Wing.

The room cost $480 for one night, plus a $50 mandatory resort fee.

Once I saw my room, I wasn't impressed. It looked very basic and quite dated — especially because of the patterned carpet. I also found it to be lacking in natural light.

I was a bit disappointed at what I got within my budget, even though the room wasn't exactly cheap. It paled in comparison to rooms I've stayed in at other luxury hotels, like the Four Seasons .

Fortunately, the bathroom felt more modern.

The bathroom felt more modern than the rest of the room with its marbled tile and glass shower doors, and I appreciated the mirror with built-in lights.

But it was still quite small, making it difficult for two adults to use it while getting ready for the day.

The hotel itself was beautiful, though.

I loved exploring the grounds of the hotel, which anyone can probably do without being a guest there.

With high ceilings and beautiful artwork, the hotel's main lobby area has an especially grand feel. I also loved the open-air areas that provide stunning views of the nearby beach and ocean.

The hotel's manicured grounds also looked great.

The green landscaping and florals around the property felt super lush.

I also liked enjoyed seeing the hotel pool, which is surrounded by iconic pink and white lounge chairs, cabanas, and umbrellas.

We spent most of our time on the beach.

We took advantage of The Royal Hawaiian's location directly on the beach. Unfortunately, our resort stay didn't come with private beach access since just about every beach is public in Hawaii.

The beach ended up getting very busy during our weekend visit. The sand and water were beautiful, though, and I loved seeing Diamond Head (a cone of volcanic ash on Oahu) in the distance.

That said, I was also disappointed to learn that beach-chair and umbrella rentals were not included in the resort fee I paid to stay at The Royal Hawaiian.

Instead of paying extra for rentals, I used towels provided by the hotel.

The resort's famous mai tai lived up to the hype.

One of the main reasons I wanted to visit The Royal Hawaiian was for its famous mai tais .

According to Eater , the original mai tai was said to be invented in 1944 by Victor J. Bergeron. When he brought his recipe to Hawaii in 1953, it was tweaked to offer a fruitier flavor perfect for tourists on vacation.

The Royal Hawaiian is said to be the first to serve the Hawaiian version of the mai tai, which is now the most famous drink on the islands.

Fortunately, the Royal Hawaiian's mai-tai bar is right on the beach, so it comes with sweeping views of the island.

During my trip, I ordered the classic Royal Hawaiian mai tai for $20. The price was comparable with what I paid for other mai tais on the island, and this rum cocktail was one of the very best drinks I tried during my trip.

The hotel was also located within walking distance of a lot of Waikiki dining.

I enjoyed the short walk from our hotel to Waikiki's vibrant dining and shopping options. We made a few visits to the famous beach restaurant Duke's Waikiki, which was just next door.

Although The Royal Hawaiian has several dining options, we chose to have several meals at Duke's because the food was more affordable.

I had a nice trip, but I wouldn't spend the money to stay at the pink hotel again.

Overall, I spent $530 on my one-night stay at The Royal Hawaiian, and I don't think I can justify staying there again.

The hotel's location was nice, but I wasn't impressed with my room, which felt very dated. For the same price or a few hundred dollars more, I could stay somewhere with more luxurious-feeling rooms, like Disney's Aulani or a nearby Four Seasons.

Maybe I would've felt differently if I'd stayed in the other section of the hotel, the Mailani Tower . It's decorated differently, and I've heard from friends the Tower's rooms are nicer and more modern.

Although rooms in the Historic Wing and Mailani Tower can have comparable prices, a room in the tower was pricier when I booked my trip.

Even so, I think the best parts of the resort, like its nearby beaches and mai tais, can be accessed by the general public. I'll definitely return to The Royal Hawaiian's bar for mai tais, but I won't be staying again as an overnight guest.

Eclipse’s Path Is Also Leaving a Trail of High Hotel Prices

One Super 8 in Illinois advertised $949 a night. Its normal rate is $95.

Ben Blatt is skipping the high prices and will settle for watching a partial eclipse in Brooklyn.

The solar eclipse that will cast a visible shadow across the United States on Monday is already leaving an obvious mark on hotel prices.

Super 8 Hotel Prices for the Eclipse

The Super 8 hotel chain is considered an inexpensive option for travelers, and it has over 1,400 American locations. About 300 of those are within the path of totality, and 100 of those were sold out for Sunday or Monday, according to the Super 8 website.

Roughly 45 percent of Super 8s within 25 miles of the center path of totality that still had vacancies were listing rooms for at least double their usual price. One Super 8 in Grayville, Ill., advertised $949 a night for a Sunday-Tuesday stay. Its normal advertised nightly rate is $95.

A representative from Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the parent company of Super 8, said each Super 8 is an individually operated franchise that sets its own rates, although all franchise owners have access to revenue management software that they can use to set pricing strategy.

More expensive hotels in large cities are also seeing a spike. The Ritz-Carlton in Dallas is currently listing a two-night stay at $7,600 for Sunday-Tuesday. One week later, the price for a two-night stay will be $1,329.

Data for the map was created by comparing the lowest nonmember price for a stay April 7-9 with the same Sunday-Tuesday period one week before and one week after.

Even Super 8 hotels in Glendale, Ariz., the site of the men’s N.C.A.A. basketball tournament final, which takes place Monday, do not exceed eclipse prices. Multiple Super 8 locations near Augusta, Ga., home of the Masters golf tournament starting next week, are either sold out or have prices far above their average — explaining the map dots near the Augusta area.

Thelma Diller, who works at the Super 8 in Malvern, Ark., said she would be at the hotel Monday and would “hopefully” watch the eclipse. She said the hotel sold out almost a year ago. “I’ve worked here almost 20 years,” she said. “It’s extremely rare.”
