All you need to know about British Walking Tours

What are walking tours.

A walking tour takes you around a city, park, historical site, or any attraction, on foot. Whether you stroll down cobblestone streets, wander ancient ruins or hike through a forest, you’ll get an intimate look at the local landscapes and culture on a walking tour. Even better, you’ll get some exercise in the fresh air while appreciating the close-up details that are often missed when you whizz by in a car.

Is Windsor Castle worth visiting?

As the world’s largest and oldest occupied castle, Windsor Castle is definitely worth visiting. With almost 1,000 years of history starting with William the Conqueror, the castle is now one of the Queen’s grand homes. We’ll take you to see the castle’s elegant State Apartments with intricate ceilings, artworks and Queen Mary’s Doll House, and St. George’s Chapel where Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle.

What palaces can you visit in London?

While Buckingham Palace is the most iconic palace in London, there are a few more that are well worth a trip. Be sure to check out the famous Kensington Palace, the Kew Palace and stunning Kew Gardens, the regal Hampton Court Palace, and the historic Palace of Westminster. And don’t forget the Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London.

When should I go to Ireland and Scotland?

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the United Kingdom, you can’t miss the highlights of Northern Ireland and Scotland. See the iconic cities like Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh, then discover the spectacular landscapes. Marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, cross to the Isle of Skye, and explore the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Best hikes in the UK

  • Lake District - Admire the stunning beauty of nature as we traverse the Catbells crests of the Lake District , a hike which has been named as one of the 35 best hikes in the world . A hike from the glassy waters of Buttermere Lake leads us to the rocky ridge of Haystacks, deemed 'the best fell-top of all' by the revered author Alfred Wainwright, and a tough ascent to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, rewards us with spectacular panoramic views over the Lakes, and beyond to Scotland on a clear day.
  • Northumberland - A less-trodden corner of England, a walking trip to Northumberland will reveal unspoiled fells draped in heather and a dramatically beautiful coastline, dotted with ancient castles. Retrace the footsteps of St Aiden along the Pilgrim's Path to Holy Island and follow the jagged coastline to Craster to spot Kittiwake and Fulmar nesting on the rocks at Cullernose Point. A trek along Hadrian's Wall with its milecastles and turrets will take you back to a bygone era, and a hike up to the summit of Simonside reveals spectacular panoramic views over the towering Cheviot Hills.

Frequently asked questions

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What are the types of walking and hiking holidays?

We provide two styles of walking and trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

What is included in walking and trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel).

We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking and trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike.

Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions:

  • Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches.
  • Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina.
  • Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

When is the best time to go on a walking trip in the UK?

There's no one 'best time' to do a walking trip in the UK with all seasons offering something completely different.

While temperatures can be lower and rainy days more frequent, landscapes usually come alive in winter and autumn so these can be great seasons to travel.

Summer brings with it warmer weather and sunny days so you can maximise the time you spend in the great outdoors.

What to pack for a walking trip in the UK

What to pack for a walking trip can depend on how difficult the walk that you plan to do is but generally it's a good idea to make sure you have the below items:

  • Backpack/day bag
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Retractable walking poles
  • Reusable drink bottle

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Your Itinerary

Catching the train from London Paddington to the beautiful city of Oxford, we begin our grand tour of the UK by exploring the various iconic university colleges, punting on the Thames and strolling through the green open space of Port Meadow. Having soaked up the unique atmosphere of this historic city, our handpicked Active England guide will lead you on a stunning introductory walk into the Cotswolds. In the evening, we settle down in the charming market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, and enjoy our first dinner together as a group.

Winding our way through the quiet country lanes and over the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, our first stop today is the quintessential English town of Chipping Campden. From here, we continue on to Hidcote Gardens, internationally renowned for its collection of incredible outdoor “rooms.” We then hike up to Broadway Tower for a packed lunch, enjoying awe-inspiring views over 16 counties in England and Wales, before walking into the village of Broadway itself. Locally known as the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’, our guides will ensure you see the absolute best of this beautiful corner of England.

Today we begin with coffee at Daylesford Organic, the most exclusive farm shop in the Cotswolds, before travelling through idyllic countryside to Blenheim Palace. Winston Churchill’s birthplace and now a World Heritage Site, we eat lunch overlooking the Capability Brown parklands, and take some time during the afternoon to explore the historic palace and the gorgeous 2,000-acre estate. With the day drawing to a close, we return to Moreton-in-Marsh for our final evening in the Cotswolds.

We transfer this morning to Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands and the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Taking plenty of time to explore all this historic location has to offer, including a visit to Shakespeare’s birthplace and the church in which he’s buried, we’ll then transfer once again to the Brecon Beacons National Park for the Welsh leg of our grand tour.

We’ll spend the day walking through the beautiful Brecon Beacons, with views up towards the striking Pen Y Fan – the highest peak in South Wales, at 2,900 ft. After exploring this stunning landscape, we return to our hotel in Abergavenny. Set against the beautiful Black Mountains, this friendly little town is the perfect place to reward ourselves with a pint of local ale, before we settle in for our final evening in Wales.

We transfer this morning to the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and England’s largest National Park. Staying in the bustling market town of Keswick, our route today takes us up the famous Catbells. Known for its steep climb and spectacular views of Borrowdale and Derwentwater, you’ll quickly see why this particular peak is one of the most popular in all of the Lakes. After reaching the summit, the descent will bring us to the far end of Derwentwater, where we’ll take to the water and catch a relaxing ferry back to Keswick for some well-deserved R&R.

Today’s itinerary takes us up Helvellyn. Officially voted England’s favourite walk, our guide will offer the choice of climbing all the way to the summit or hiking the lower slopes. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the popular tourist destination of Ambleside. Sitting at the head of Windermere, England’s largest natural lake, we’ll take a little time to rest up and visit some of the many local shops and cafés, before making our way back to Keswick for our final night in the Lakes.

We begin today with a transfer to Hadrian’s Wall, the world-famous Roman structure that stretches 73 miles from coast to coast. Hitting the trails, our route takes us from Housesteads, the most complete Roman fort in Britain, to Vindolanda, one of England’s most significant archaeological sites. Following the wall itself, we’ll have plenty of opportunity as we walk to marvel at what is undoubtedly one of England’s most dramatic landmarks, as well as to visit the recently felled Sycamore Gap tree.

Today we walk to some of Northumberland’s most magnificent castles. We visit Lindisfarne, the ancient site of England’s first Christian settlements, its location on a tidal estuary showcases Northumberland’s unparalleled coastline in all its glory. Finally, we end today’s hike at Bamburgh. Sitting high on an outcrop over the beach, with wonderful views over to the Farne Islands and back across the causeway to Lindisfarne, this particular castle is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular in the area. With our route complete, we end the day by transferring to Edinburgh.

For our last full day, we explore Scotland’s magnificent capital. With our Active England guide leading the way, we’ll soak up the unique atmosphere of this lively city, visiting iconic local landmarks such as the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, and walking post Holyrood Palace up the famous Arthur’s Seat. With our grand tour now drawing to a close, we’ll celebrate the end of our adventure with a final dinner together.

After a relaxed breakfast, our Active England guide will lead you to Edinburgh Waverley railway station, where we’ll say our farewells and provide any help you might need with your onward travel arrangements. We can also provide transfers to the airport.

Alternatively, extended tours are available on request for those eager to explore the breath-taking Scottish islands and highlands. If you would like to extend your tour, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

Carbon Footprint

What’s the Number? Nearly everything has a carbon footprint. Together with ecollective, we’ve measured the carbon impact of not only every tour we operate but our entire business. We’ve taken into account greenhouse gas emissions across the business including office, travel, website, vehicles, accommodation, activities, food, suppliers…

What does the number mean? We’re going to improve this by measuring and reducing our footprint each year. That means working with our suppliers to make changes that have a more positive impact on us and the planet. What does this look like in reality?

  • Redesign trips to reduce our carbon impact
  • Working closely with all our suppliers across England to join us on our decarbonisation journey
  • Switching up our vehicle fleet to electric
  • Investing in projects that permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere for any emissions that remain.

We’ve got a long way to go but we’re on our way to net-zero We’re committed to reducing our impact on the planet and working towards a sustainable future. We’ve taken ownership of our carbon footprint and are on a mission to reduce our emissions year on year.

Highlights of our United Kingdom Walking Holidays

  • Lake District - Admire the stunning beauty of nature as we traverse the Catbells crests of the Lake District .
  • Northumberland - A less-trodden corner of England, a walking holiday to Northumberland will reveal unspoiled fells draped in heather and a dramatically beautiful coastline, dotted with ancient castles.

Our top trail: Hadrian's Wall Path

Perhaps our most beloved National Trail of all, Hadrian's Wall Path crosses the north of England from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, following the ancient Roman monument of Hadrian's Wall.

The route is well-signposted and full of Roman history, from museums to forts and milecastles, and its massive popularity has inspired a wealth of walker-friendly cafes and pubs in the region.

Classic Walks of Scotland

The classic Walks of Scotland was my husband’s and my first experience with a group trip, We felt that everything went well, from the booking of the trip with Tourradar to the rest of the trip, hikes and bookings though Intrepid. The Intrepid group we hiked with was great and our guide, Kate, was very professional, attentive and fun. Thanks to Carmen and Phil from Guisachan Guest house for the comfortable and homey accommodations.

Walking Scotland’s Orkney Islands Tour

Walking Scotland’s Orkney Islands

I had been looking forward to Orkney for years. It was wonderful, and I am able to say that because of the Explore! tour that we found through Tourradar. First, the leader of the tour (Marco) was friendly, courteous, personable and highly professional. His assistant leader (Richie) was the same. We did a great variety of walks and visited several of the islands. We saw all of the ancient Neolithic sites (incredible). We ate at really good restaurants. All of this happened without any problem or worry because Marco put it together for us. We didn’t have to worry about a thing. We took walks of multiple miles and enjoyed the cliffs and seascape, the flowers, the birds, the vast rolling country. The company (a group of 13) was compatible and fun. The rides, in Explore! vans, we’re full of laughter and conversation. We will definitely look to this group for future plans. Thanks!!

Hiking & Island Hopping - Cork & Kerry

This tour was incredible. Donncha brought Ireland to life in no other way. Literally, nearly a year later and we feel "homesick" thinking about Ireland. The trails were incredible. Every skill level could do the hikes and yet it was never boring. Best way to see Ireland in my opinion. All accomodations were lovely, food was fantastic. Donncha also have fantastic recommendations everyday on where to eat and what to check out in our free time. This will be one I remember for the rest of my life as a top favorite.

Cotswolds Walking Tour

What a wonderful experience we have had on our “Cotswolds, Castles & Cottages” Tour. Our visit to Sudeley Castle was delightful, Hailes Abbey and it’s historical story was made most interesting by having the portable audio commentary provided by English Heritage, and Chedworth Roman Villa is fascinating to visit. To be in the English Cotswolds countryside is an opportunity which we have been so lucky to have had. It was a delight to walk amongst all these ancient thatched cottages. As our Tour Leader had already told us, the Cotswold Cottages are beautifully preserved and it has been awesome to be able to enjoy being amongst them with their magnificent English gardens full of the perfume of their beautiful Roses and their unbelievable colours, and together with all the awesome varieties of English flowers in these gardens, was admired by us all our cameras have recorded amazing memories.

Guided Walking Holidays

Beginning the Coast to Coast walk along the green cliffs of England | Tim Charody

A guided walking holiday is ideal for travellers who prefer the camaraderie of like-minded walkers from around the world and appreciate the local knowledge shared by expert local guides.

Your walking guide is with you from the time your walking holiday commences until it concludes. They work tirelessly to tailor the trip to your interests while also ensuring your holiday runs smoothly for the whole group. Their passion for their country, or the region you are walking through, helps bring to life the flora, fauna and history of their homelands.

Depending on the chosen trip, group sizes generally vary from 6 to 22 people, and somewhat larger on boat based departures. On a guided walking tour in the UK and Europe, travelling in a small group does not mean your experience is tied to the rest of the group. There is time to go off exploring on your own.

On a guided walking tour you’ll share memories and laughs with travellers around the world who also appreciate the benefits of exploring the UK and Europe by foot.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Macs Adventure has been organising self-guided hiking trips on the Thames Path since 2018 and we have been organizing walking holidays in the Cotswolds since 2007. Due to the success and popularity of our tours in the Cotswolds, we decided it was time to offer the fantastic Thames Path to our community; a National Trail joining the Cotswolds with Oxford, Windsor and London City. The Thames Path has proven popular from the outset and it's easy to see why. The Thames is arguably the most iconic river in the UK. It starts out as a mere trickle in the heart of the Cotswolds and following it to London is an immersive journey through the South of England's history, heritage and cuisine.

We offer a flexible, tailor-made Thames Path experience  staying in comfortable B&Bs, guesthouses, and inns attached to traditional English pubs. We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on simply putting one foot in front of the other and enjoying all this delightful corner of England has to offer. You can book with confidence that we have it all covered for you.

We want to showcase our expertise , by giving you all the resources you will ever need. Our Destination Specialists have their own experiences of walking the Thames Path and are waiting to answer your questions. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping to make sure you find your way, as well as a host of tips, facts and recommendations to enrich your Thames Path experience.

Why Book your Thames Path Hiking Trip with Macs Adventure?

Q. When is the best time of year to walk the Thames Path?

A. The Thames path can be enjoyed any time between the end of April and the beginning of October. Any time before April may be affected by early spring flooding which can disrupt some trails. From the start of May until mid-end June, the countryside, especially around the Cotswolds is covered in wildflowers. Spring also tends to be quieter, as well as Fall (September/beginning October). The popular tourist months of July and August be busy on the trails, but on the other hand, the towns can be vibrant and atmospheric.

Q. What is 'Cream Tea' and where can I get it?

A. 'Cream Tea' is a light afternoon meal consisting of a pot of lovingly brewed tea accompanied by freshly backed scones, Cornish clotted cream and jam. The concept originates from Cornwall but is now popular in many parts of England, particularly in the Cotswolds which is covered by our West and Complete Thames Paths itineraries. How far back cream teas date is open to debate, however their popularity is linked to the tourism boom of the Victorian period, when newly built railway infrastructure opened up holiday destinations like Devon, Cornwall and the Cotswolds to those lucky enough to afford such luxuries. Many cafés and pubs along the Thames Path will be serving Cream Tea, particularly on the sections in the countryside. Some places may require advance booking, so it is worth looking into in advance if you want to experience some of the best Cream Teas the area has to offer. Otherwise, just walk up and try your luck! The big question is, which do you put on first, the clotted cream or jam??

Q. Will I need a map and compass?

A. The Thames Path is a national trail and therefore relatively well signposted. In addition to this, we provide you with high-quality digital mapping and GPS tracks to help you find your way. You may wish to bring your own supplementary map if you are so inclined, but it is definitely not required. This trip is low-level with easy-going flat terrain and signposting, so a compass is not required.

Thames Path FAQs

The Thames River

Perhaps surprisingly, the Thames is not the UK's longest river. That accolade goes to The River Severin which is about 8km longer than the Thames at 354 km. Despite this, the Thames is by far the most famous of the UK's rivers due to its illustrious past. Since pre-historic times, the river has been a vital and very busy highway of boats of all kinds of sizes and shapes, moving products and goods of all varieties. The moving of goods and passengers lead to London's prosperity and the international acclaim that it still enjoys to this day. Nowadays the vessels on the Thames are there for recreational purposes, but the traffic is still considerable with barges, canoes, kayaks and small boats all regularly making their way up and down the river.

The town of Oxford is mostly known for its world-renowned university. Founded in 1096, it is the oldest English-language university in the world and the second oldest university in the world after the University of Bologna in Italy. Oxford University is continuously ranked as one of the best universities in the world and its historic campus and buildings are tourist attractions in their own right, being beautifully ornate and steeped in atmosphere and history. Outside of the campus, join Oxonians (the name given to natives of the town) browsing the shelves of Blackwell's Bookshop, a local institution and one of the world's largest bookshops with an incredible 5 km of shelving to explore. The River Thames runs through Oxford, where it is also known by the name Isis, which stems from its ancient Roman name  Tamesis. The name Isis is particularly common in the context of university rowing.

The Thames Barrier

The Thames Path finishes at the Thames Barrier in London, near Woolwich. The Barrier is a flood defence system that was completed in 1982 and has been operational ever since. Its purpose is to protect London from rising tides and surges from the North Sea and a potentially devastating flood. It is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world and is made up of 10 steel gates which stand as high as a 5 story building when raised. There is a small exhibition in the information centre of the barrier for those who would like to learn more about this engineering marvel.

A walking tour of Cillian Murphy’s Cork — pubs, theatres and music venues

The city steeped in the arts put the actor on the path to oscar-winning stardom in the blockbuster oppenheimer. now you can rediscover his inspiring haunts.

A view over Cork City from St Patrick’s Hill

L ast weekend Cillian Murphy followed up his Oscar win with an Irish Film and Television Academy statue but despite all the international acclaim the one thing that we Corkonians won’t let you forget is that he’s a proud Corkonian too. And for us Leesiders it makes sense that he’s from here. After all, Cork is a city that’s steeped in the arts, and while growing up Murphy took advantage of all that its various venues and theatres had to offer. Fittingly, it was a play performed in the legendary nightclub Sir Henry’s that made him go down the acting route. And aren’t we glad he did.

If you’re keen to discover what parts of the city inspired the Oppenheimer star, the good news is that
