2012 Dodge Journey Overview

The 2012 Dodge Journey is powered by a four-cylinder engine that test drivers said doesn't produce enough power. They recommended the V6 engine, which they said provides ample power and brisk acceleration. The base model with front-wheel drive gets an estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is below-average for the class. The V6 model with front-wheel drive gets up to 17/25 mpg city/highway. Automotive writers said the Dodge Journey handles confidently and feels secure through turns. They also agreed that the Journey offers a relatively smooth, composed ride and steering that’s precise and responsive.

Reviewers were pleased with the 2012 Journey’s well-designed cabin, which they said includes nicer materials than the Journey offered in previous model years. The Dodge Journey seats five, and the second row was available with integrated child booster seats when it was new. The 2012 Journey was available with a third row, increasing seating capacity to seven, which is rare for the class, but automotive writers said it only provides enough room for small children. Test drivers said the front- and second-row seats offer plenty of head- and legroom, and the sliding second-row seat adds additional legroom or cargo space. Base Journey models are equipped with dual-zone air conditioning, keyless entry and start, a USB port, an auxiliary jack and a touch-screen Uconnect infotainment system. Options when it was new include heated front seats, a voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system, satellite radio and Bluetooth. Reviewers said the standard touch screen is overwhelmed by large, redundant climate control buttons that can be confusing to operate. They preferred the larger screen on the available navigation system and said it's easy to read. With both the second and third rows folded, the Dodge Journey has 67.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Reviewers liked that the Journey has numerous convenient storage bins, including one under the front passenger seat.

The Honda CR-V comes equipped with some standard features that were optional on the Dodge Journey when it was new, including Bluetooth and a rearview camera. The Honda CR-V earned praise for its spacious, comfortable seating and good rear visibility.

Vehicle Overview

Dodge heavily revised its Journey crossover for the 2011 model year. Changes included a restyled front end, an all-new interior and a new V-6 engine option. Available in five- or seven-seat configurations, the Journey is also offered with front- or all-wheel drive. Competitors include the Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano. New for 2012 With the addition of an American Value Package, the Journey’s base price is $3,250 lower than last year. The Uconnect Touch 8.4 multimedia system with navigation gains voice-recognition technology, song-tagging capability and an eco-routing feature. Exterior With its crosshair grille, lower bumper styling and flared fenders, the Dodge Journey has an aggressive-looking front end. The R/T trim level has a monochromatic exterior appearance and 19-inch aluminum wheels. Other exterior features include:

• Standard 16-inch steel wheels; 17- or 19-inch aluminum rims optional
• Standard power heated side mirrors
• Dual exhaust tips with optional V-6
• Optional roof rails
• Optional LED taillights

Interior Higher-quality materials were added to the Journey’s dashboard last year. All Journey trim levels have a touch-screen stereo, but the optional Uconnect Touch 8.4 system features a large 8.4-inch touch-screen interface for functions like air conditioning and audio, and it can incorporate a Garmin-based navigation system. The R/T model boasts black leather seats with red stitching. Other interior features include:

Under the Hood The Journey’s base engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder that works with a four-speed automatic transmission. A 283-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 is available, and it teams with a six-speed automatic. Mechanical features include:

• Four-cylinder model is front-drive only; V-6 versions can have front- or all-wheel drive
• Both engines use regular gas
• Maximum Towing capacity is 1,000 pounds for four-cylinder, 2,500 pounds for V-6

Love my Journey

Bought my 2012 journey slightly used in 2013 and have had only one thing crap out on it. The Bluetooth. That’s it! Nothing else, just the Bluetooth. This has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned! My husband makes sure all the maintenance is done when recommended by dodge. 122,000 miles in and she is still perfect!

Cannot beat the value

I had owned a 2010 Journey a few years ago when they came out. It was a very finicky car but was always reliable and never let me down. I had moved on to much higher end vehicles from Toyota and even had a Volvo. Just this past year everything changed and I essentially had to start over. A dealer that specialized helping people in my situation put me in a 2012 Journey. I'm very happy with it! Every complaint I had on the 2010 is not on the 2012. The 3.6 in the 12 is so much better matched to the Journey then the 3.5 ever was. It has way more power and gets about 25 mpg or 5 more then the 2010. The Journey is actually more comfortable then the Volvo it replaced! In terms of money, you cannot beat the Journey value. Both of my Journey have been reliable, I wouldn't think twice about taking it anywhere and it has 130000 miles. It is ten years old and has aged very well. Every feature works, air is ice cold, sound system is great, and the 3.6 is still silent. The 62te transmission does occasionally "stumble" when shifting but I've had four other Chrysler with 62te and they all did it as well.

Smaller than the typical mid-sized SUV, the Journey is a dated and mediocre performer. It rides decently and is fairly quiet, but that's about all. It suffers from a lack of agility, lousy fuel economy from the optional 3.6-liter V6, a reluctant transmission, and a tiny third-row seat. For the same sticker price of a V6-powered Journey, one can buy the much better Kia Sorento, but hefty discounts are the norm for the Journey. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results, subpar reliability and owner satisfaction add to the long list of demerits. Hefty discounts are common, but don't fall for this SUV that's soon to be put to pasture.

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results and below average owner satisfaction add to the long list of demerits. Three row seating became standard for 2018.  Ultimately, we think you'd be better served looking at something else. The V6 engine and all-wheel drive were dropped in 2020 and the Journey finally came to an end.

Well Worth A Look!!

I have had this car now for 9 months and 14k miles. It is amazing!! I can drive this car all day long and arrive at my destination fresh. Roadtrips, the miles woosh by silently as the V6 purrs along. That 75 mph, it spins along under 2,000 rpm. It returns mpg at that speed 27-28. The interior does have a lot of hard resting spots but is so full of cubbies and storage bins, who cares, really? Two bins under the floor in back, another huge bin in the cargo area under the floor, another bin under the front passenger seat cushion. Cupholders everywhere, door and console. The rear seats recline and move back and forth for legroom. The third row is just for kids though.

Saved our lives in a rollover

We bought a gently used journey and traveled cross country for Thanksgiving, honestly I didn't love it and hated the weird headrests, although the various compartments were great. Someone clipped us going 90 on the highway and we rolled 5 times, ending up on the roof 165 feet into a field. The side curtain airbags and those behind the front seat headrests saved our lives, we bought another one immediately. We had small children in the back, and we all walked away. Cheap interior, yes, but that car saved our lives so we can celebrate Christmas this year.

A good Economical Crossover

I have read a lot of Edmunds reviews and I have grown weary of their apparent car snobbishness and demand for perfection. There is no perfect vehicle. For the money I find that my new base model Dodge Journey is comfortable, adequately powered, and very roomy. For those who do not expect the moon and the stars from our ride, I find driving the 2010 Journey to be a pleasant experience that is not overshadowed by glaring defects. The ride is comfortable, and for having a four banger under the hood, it does what needs to be done without blocking traffic. Bottom line, the Journey is a satisfactory family SUV that is easy on the budget and will take where you want to go in relative comfort.

Great Ride and Good Economy

After delivering mail for 18 years, mostly out of Mopar minivans, I looked forward to driving a smaller, more efficient car with features I like most: economy, comfort and quality of build. I found all those in my Journey. The only things I've found fault with are 1) the transmission is balky in either the select shift mode or the full automatic mode. It is slow to shift, but very smooth; and 2) the ignition key is VERY VERY fragile. Who's idiotic idea was it to make such a cruddy key that costs over 200 to replace after only 29 months? They really need to re-think the ignition keys with all the needless bells and whistles. Just give me a simple metal key that starts the car!

Way ahead of whatever is in 2nd place

Had an '04 Porsche Cayenne Turbo and just loved it! Thought we'd like a Mercedes - bought an '08 E350 4-Matic. Super car but missed the SUV. Wanted 3 row seats for grandkids, reasonable economy, comfort, conveinence, versatility, etc. Looked at everything out there within reason. Thought the Jouney is the best bang for the buck. The Mazda CX-9 was nice but too big for the wife. This Journey does not disappoint - super quiet, very comfortable, and easy to enter and exit. Would like memory seats/mirrors and a heated steering wheel that we had before but.....all else is excellent. Black R/T AWD, NAV, back-up camera, DVD Player, everything. Best move we made in 46 years of marriage!
