Trek remedy 2017 9.9 race shop limited, remedy searches for bite without the bounce - a classy performer, for 2017 trek’s solution for the wheel size and travel brain twister has been to up the remedy to 150mm and drop the wheel size down to only 27.5”..

Trek Remedy 2017 – the review

This is where the Remedy was at seven or eight years ago in terms of travel but irrespective of how many steps forward or back this move is, Trek have clearly identified the comfort zone need of buyers for a 150/27.5 trail/enduro bike. Today we’re excited to review the Trek Remedy 2017 edition.

Five sizes, 27.5 wheels the new 2017 Remedy dishes out some fully up to date geometry numbers. The 21.5 size that we rode out in Squamish features a 477mm reach, 1231mm wheelbase and 65.5 head angle with 339mm bottom bracket. These are very good statistics for a 150/160mm bike and a six foot rider but we believe there’s still room for one more size the range. This top end 9 series is slightly higher than the other lesser priced bikes with longer Lyrik 160mm fork which in effect makes it slacker but a shade higher.

2017 trek remedy 9

The Trek Remedy has been our trail bike of the year in the past for its great suspension and geometry but for 2017 Trek say they are trying to simplify their range in order to try and make it more understandable for buyers. Why they’ve changed the Remedy from 29” and 27.5” wheels to purely 27.5” we can only imagine will be clearer in the coming weeks when it’s rumoured Trek will launch an updated Slash. Let’s say at the time we really missed a long travel 29” bike in the range but had our fingers crossed there was more to come.

2017 trek remedy 9

Suspension/Chassis

It’s another flawless build from Trek with many impressive features. Radiant with its stunning finish and supremely engineered chassis the bike is damped with a Rockshox Deluxe RT3, RE:aktiv 3 position unit compared to the Fox parts fitted to the Fuel’s. Up front the slightly longer travel Lyrik is fitted to this top Trek Remedy.

2017 trek remedy 9

More than anything with the Trek Remedy 2017, we were keen to see how it performed against the previous 29” version which had one of the best suspension packages on any trail bike we have ever ridden. The RE:aktiv Fox damper contrary to how we’d been told it would work was a bike that operated at its most efficient in wet conditions, a damper that searched out grip and was not one that revelled in pumping terrain to get momentum. With no discernible platform it was a sensitive damper which could hunt down even the vaguest offering of grip which required a slightly opposing style to manage the front and rear effectively but a system that we had come to admire nonetheless.

2017 trek remedy 9

Componentry

Already boosted with a 148mm rear hub and 110mm front the Remedy is shod with Bontrager’s excellent Elite wheelset and SE4 tyres but everyone’s eyes will be on the Sram Eagle groupset that drives this bike, the Sram Guide Ultimate brakes and the impressive new Dropline seatpost with such an easy action lever.

2017 trek remedy 9

Grip, that’s the vibe the Remedy gives out, on the rear it’s a real searcher for bite without the bounce. We actually found the damper on the Remedy pretty close to the old Fox unit on the early bikes. This is a good thing. A very good thing. Still, you can load the rear when needed, it just needs a slightly more delicate touch than some of the more muscle bound dampers on some enduro bikes. It strikes an excellent balance in this respect.

DIRT MOUNTAIN BIKE | BIKE REVIEWS

The rear can offers good resistance in the hard setting to aid climbing and the Eagle enabled easy leg spinning on the climbs. The bike silently glided, cornered and dropped into steep terrain with perfect poise. It’s a beautifully figured out bike happy in its sinewy but well balanced build.

2017 trek remedy 9

Limitations. Not much. Ugly bar?

2017 trek remedy 9

The Remedy offers a performance advantage that people will be considering especially now that they might well be lining this bike up against direct sales bikes. For £5600 this has never been more important. And its in the chassis integrity and the damper that the Remedy has pre-eminence. The bike has classy damping and the chassis intensity is excellent.

But there’s more to Trek bikes. And this is also where the brand scores over basic bikes, is the detail, the bits that cost a touch more to produce yet that give a performance advantage – ABP, Knock Block steerer, great chain/frame protection, E2 steerer, Mino Link and a fully loaded build – it’s a lot of money but a lot of bike also.

Yes the carbon on this bike is a masterclass but for a few thousand less the £2800 Remedy 9 Race Shop Limited will be a more realistic offering. This is because I’m happy to walk rather than ride at the gearing range Eagle offers, and as great as Trek carbon is the geometry on the aluminium bike is the same, and if you’re about to drop six to seven grand on a carbon enduro bike then I’d hold your horses a week or two anyway.

But as a high performance 27.5 wheel 150mm travel bike this bike is pretty much hard to fault. Bottom line, an easy to ride, upbeat and very capable bike.

We’ve been impressed by the sensitivity of Trek’s RE:aktiv dampers from RockShox and Fox, but the Trek Remedy brings sensitivity to another level.

The price of this bike has only gone up by £200 in five years, yet it’s a vastly superior ride. Great small bump sensitivity with the RE:aktiv damper Thru Shaft shock.

Unproven reliability of the Thru Shaft damper design.

Trek went deep for 2017 and launched all new models of their Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash platforms. At their launch event last year in Squamish we were introduced to and rode the first two, but only got a sneak peek of the Slash as its announcement followed about a month later. Go here for a full run down on spec, geo, pricing, and my early ride impressions of the Fuel EX and Remedy, and you can read Perry's Slash review here. The reason I'm starting this Remedy review with all of that info is because Trek didn't just release new versions of those bikes, they also changed the way the lineup looked:

It’s engaging, lively ride makes even the dullest trails fun to ride. Trek has done a sterling job with just about every element of this bike though I'd have preferred the Solo Air rather than Dual Position Lyrik up front. Good angles and proportions with usable geometry adjustment

Very supple and active rear suspension tracks the terrain well

Solid, very cohesive spec

Great build quality with some nice, well-considered details

Pre-Brexit price hike adds another £200 to the original retail price

Dual Position Air fork needs more air pressure to keep it properly supported when pushing hard

Fit and Geometry

Unlike a lot of companies these days, Trek uses the more traditional numeric size notation. So I rode the 18.5” version of the bike, which roughly correlates to either a big “Medium” or a small-ish “Large” in most other brands.

Per Trek’s recommendations, at 5’9”, I fall right in the middle of the range for the 18.5” size. Reach on the 18.5” comes in at 445 mm, which would be a Large for most companies, and it’s a slightly bigger-feeling bike than what most companies would recommend for someone of my height. Personally, I think that’s great — it lends some stability to the bike, and I’m generally happy riding a bigger frame. But if you’re worried about it feeling like too much bike, it might be worth considering sizing down.

The Remedy, like many of Trek’s bikes, gets their Mino Link, which is just a flip chip at one of the rocker pivots that allows the geometry to be adjusted in a “high” or “low” position. I spent the vast majority of my time on the Remedy with the chip set in the low position. That yields a 65.5° head angle, a 339 mm bottom bracket height, and an overall wheelbase of 1185 mm. At the back of the bike, the Remedy has 435 mm chainstays, which are decidedly not the shortest in its class (which I think is a good thing).

For this type of bike, those numbers are at the slack and low end of the spectrum. In the low mode, the Remedy’s geometry puts it closer to more enduro-oriented bikes that have a bit more travel. And even in the high mode, the Remedy is still on the slack and long end of the 150 mm trail bike segment.

I mentioned above that the front end of the Remedy is quite low, thanks in large part to the Knock Block system that allows Trek to slim down the downtube / headtube junction. Stack height gives a pretty good picture of front end height, and the Remedy is quite low at 592 mm for the 18.5” size.

Normally I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to front end height; it is what it is, and I can change it easily enough with headset spacers and different rise handlebars. But the Remedy is noticeably low. I took quick measurements from the ground to the top of the headtube on an assortment of bikes (including a hardtail 29er with a 120mm fork and a couple other 27.5” wheeled bikes with similar or less travel than the Remedy) and the Remedy was substantially lower than all of them. Personally, I tend to like a lower handlebar, but for those who don’t, it’s easy enough to swap around some headset spacers and raise up the front end.

Great, detailed (yikes!) review on a great bike, Noah. I’ve got the predecessor in 29 and love it. Kinda hoping Trek adds that model next year.

I’ve also got a 2016 Fuel EX that I use for endurance racing (disclosure — Trek helps me out in this regard). I’ve been pounding this bike for nearly two full seasons (including a few laps up, over and around Tally Mountain in your back yard). A few observations on both bikes FWIW:

1. Love the water bottle capability. Both of mine (21 or 21.5) will hold a one-liter Zefal Magnum bottle. Heaven!

2. I’ve never had FS bikes with longer lasting, quieter pivots. On new bikes, I pop out the seals from each bearing, and top them off with Dumonde Tech liquid grease. Never had a peep from either bike, going on two seasons for the Fuel EX and three seasons for the Remedy.

3. The Reaktiv rear shocks are everything they are cracked up to be for trail riding. Like a Brain that works right. For actual racing, I use a shock with firmer lockout valving for the inevitable gravel road climbing sections in just about every endurance race.

4. As an old school guy, I wondered about the integrated lower headset bearings. Turns out to be a non-issue, and the Remedy has seen a LOT of rugged, rocky riding.

Amazing review. Extremely detailed and well thought through.

Noah — thank you for the detailed review. I have been looking at buying the Fuel EX 9.8 and was wondering how much I could infer from your review of the Remedy in considering the Fuel EX? In general the review seems very favorable of the Remedy and trying to ascertain if you were to review the current Fuel EX if you would reach similar conclusions. I know it’s a difficult question to answer but hoping for some guidance. I’m coming off of a 10-year old 26″ Santa Cruz Superlight and would like to upgrade. I’m a little cautious of going all the way up to a 29er vs. a 27.5, but I like the components on the Fuel EX 9.8 and some of the common characteristics of the Remedy in your review hit home with me. I live in Marin County and truth be told do most of my riding on fire roads, although I plan to increase riding of single tracks. A local bike shop in Fairfax is really pushing the Norco Optic 9.2 or 7.2, but I haven’t seen any recent reviews of Norco to assess.

Love your reviews and keep up the great work. I hope Jonathan is healing well!

Quick Ride Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9.8

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Remedy 9.8

Trek Bicycles Australia

AUD6,799.00

Bigger and angrier than before. Ideal for 27.5" wheel fans. Plush and grippy.

Double chainring not our choice.

Ryan Walsch from Trek gives the stiffer and longer Remedy a good old shove trough a bermed turn.

For 2017 suspension bumps up to 150mm of travel and slackens off the head angle, now adjustable between 66.5 and 66-degrees. Reach has been pushed out quite a lot as well, by 11mm on a size 19″ (large) frame, and short 50mm stems are employed across the range.

With more travel and such aggressive geometry, the Remedy can be ridden harder, so Trek needed to make the bike stiffer. The Remedy and the Fuel us the new Straight Shot down tube, the massive, boxy down tube shaves a few grams and gives the front serious stiffness. But with the wide fork crowns of boost spacing forks they ran into clearance issues so to stop the crowns impacting the frame when the wheel turns right around, they came up with a headset that stops the rotation, ‘Knock Block’. In addition to the headset there are bumpers underneath the head tube area to further protect the frame.

The Knock Block headset prevents frame damage in a crash from bars and forks spinning around.

The wide Bontrager Line rims, grippy XR4 tyres and big 35mm stem clamp give the Remedy a far tougher appearance than the 2016 model, these were the areas we upgraded our long term test bike last year, Trek are onto it!

A complete Shimano XT groupset is always a good sight, the 9.8 is covered in the stuff. The brakes are especially nice and Trek are using the I-Spec single handlebar clamp for the brake and shifter to keep the cockpit as neat as it can be.

RockShox Pike with 150mm of travel.

The 9.8 does have a double chainring, which isn’t our cup of tea but sure can come in handy on the longer climbs out there.

We spent a whole year aboard the hot green/yellow 2016 model 9.8 and after just a quick ride on this one we’re very impressed. It feels a whole lot more robust and the rear suspension feels more planted, and with the wide rims and insanely good XR4 tyres it feels great at speed.

Trek Remedy 9.8_LOW7530

With 29ers on either side of the Remedy in the Trek range with the 130mm Fuel and 160mm Slash, the 150mm travel Remedy is a bike that will enjoy a jump, drop, drift and a tight line on the trail.

Stay tuned for more as we get our hands on a Trek Remedy for a proper review.

Trek Remedy 9.9 Race Shop Limited review

Trek's new more aggressive, top-end trail bike

Steve Behr / Stockfile

Jon Woodhouse

Totally unruffable all-rounder with confidence inspiring but playful handling

It’s a great big stack of money

2017 trek remedy 9

The Remedy has been a mainstay of Trek’s mountain bike range for many years now, but 2016 — or 2017 in bike industry years — has seen it get a serious overhaul, including the fact it's only available with 27.5" wheels. It’s now stiffer, burlier and much more aggressively shaped than ever before, finally giving it enough bite to match the marketing bark.

  • Are 27.5 bikes faster than 29ers?
  • Trek Remedy 9.9 29 - long-term test review

This is the absolute tippy-top spec Remedy, with a full carbon fibre frame that uses all of Trek’s composite know-how to minimise mass. While that obviously makes it much lighter than the aluminium models found lower down the range, they all share some pretty neat technology.

Swing a leg over the bike and one of these will become apparent as soon as you try and turn the bars, because you’ll find that they don’t spin all the way round. Instead of kinking the downtube to allow the fork crown to clear it, Trek has simply not bothered. From an engineering point of view this makes a lot of sense; triangles are the strongest structures after all.

The headtube to downtube junction is one of the most highly stressed areas of the bike, so having a more direct connection allows Trek to keep this area strong, and also much lighter, as it doesn’t require a load more material chucking in there to compensate for the flawed design. Of course, that does leave you with the not so inconsequential problem of allowing the fork crown to contact the downtube.

To get around that, Trek uses a steering lock limiter that it calls Knock Block. This uses a special headset and frame insert in conjunction with specially keyed headset spacers, which prevents any contact and potential damage. It’s possible to use a conventional, non-keyed stem too, but you’ll need a special lockring to hold everything in place if you do that.

Solid and synchronised frame

The upside of all this messing about is a frame that feels utterly, utterly solid along its chassis. That big, squared off downtube simply doesn’t let the front and rear of the frame move in anything other than utter synchronicity. It’s really noticeable on rocky, cross-cambered sections or on the exit of corners where the bike simply cuts a line with the type of precision a brain surgeon would be proud of. That’s not to say it’s harsh or so stiff it becomes snappy, quite the opposite in fact. It’s a very impressive blend of accuracy and comfort and a good reminder that not all carbon fibre layups are equal.

The feeling of stiffness and precision is definitely helped by the sturdy chassis of the RockShox Lyrik fork, which also offers plush and supple control. Trek has fitted a travel adjustable Dual Position Air model, which thankfully doesn’t suffer from the Stuka-like dive of previous iterations of the design. It’s also got Boost hub spacing, as does the back end of the bike — unsurprising when you consider Trek was responsible for the standard.

Unlike standard Remedy models, which sport 150mm at the front, the rather oddly titled Race Shop Limited has a 160mm model for a touch more composure on the descents.

Elsewhere on the frame, the Trek technology farm is in full effect, with its squeeze-it-from-both-ends Full Floater shock linkages and the ABP concentric pivot rear suspension design offering 150mm of rear wheel travel. Metering that out is a RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock with the clever Re:Aktiv pedalling platform valving developed in conjunction with race car suspension specialists Penske. It provides a

Hitting the trails hard

The geometry is adjustable via flippable ‘Mino Link’ chips in the seatstay too. Leaving the acronyms aside, what you get is a really nice supportive and controlled serving of suspension that manages to pull off the trick of handling super rough chundery terrain with aplomb. It pedals well too, without excessive bob even when the shock is in the fully open mode, which is where we left it for the vast majority of our testing.

As you’d expect from a bike that costs this much money, there’s really very little to grumble about when it comes to spec on the Remedy

The same went for the geometry tweaking chips. At 65º, the head angle in the high/steep position is actually pretty much spot on for all but the steepest trails, and the same goes for the 9mm BB drop. It’s a good compromise between engaging handling and flat-out stability, with enough pedal clearance to still be a useful all-day machine on more rutted trails. Of course, the option to drop half a degree off the head angle and 10mm off the bottom bracket height is a nice one to have if you prefer a more speed focused set up.

We tested the 19.5” frame, which had a respectably long reach of 459mm and the 74.1º effective seat angle keeps you in a decent position while seated. Frames do top-out one size larger at 21.5”, so if you’re both lofty and like a long bike, you might be left wanting.

Thanks to an all-in weight of 12.78kg, it’s also a very pleasant place to be on an extended climb too, despite all the travel. A 12-speed SRAM Eagle X01 drivetrain might give you just a single ring up front, but the 10-50T gear range means you both winch yourself up ridiculously steep hauls and also hammer along flatter sections without issue. It’s also a much smoother feeling than SRAMs 11-speed offerings, with a less violent but still positive shift between ratios.

As you’d expect from a bike that costs this much money, there’s really very little to grumble about when it comes to spec on the Remedy. Bontrager might well be the house brand of Trek, but it produces some consistently high performing products, so despite the large asking price it’s not a disappointment to see that Bontrager provides most of the finishing kit.

There’s a set of usefully wide 780mm carbon bars with a 35mm diameter clamp paired to a 35mm long stem that allows you to wrestle the bike where you want it, even when you get up to speed. The Drop Line dropper post only has 125mm of travel and it’s a bit of an unknown quantity in terms of long-term reliability, but it performed smoothly and consistently during our test period.

The under bar cable remote was a pleasant surprise too, it’s easy to locate and has a reasonably light action. The Bontrager Line Elite wheels are great too, the ratchet drive has a super fast pickup and at 30mm internal width they give the 2.4” Bontrager SE4 tyre a good, squared off profile.

The tyres themselves were respectably grippy and durable despite the slightly low profile tread. If you regularly ride in sloppy conditions, you’ll almost certainly want to switch the front for something more aggressive as a minimum. In drier conditions they corner and roll well, while the combination of tubeless compatibility and reinforced sidewalls fended punctures off nicely.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the most high-end trail bike from a big manufacturer is good, but it is mightily impressive that Trek has done such an excellent job to turn the Remedy into a much better all-round aggressive trail bike. It’s stiff, capable and — most importantly — a whole load of fun.
