America’s Best Long Weekend Getaways

Of course you want months off for vacation. Who doesn’t? But sometimes the best we can do is a restorative (or raucous) two-night weekend trip to somewhere fantastic. Here, the highlights from 13 of our favorite quick trips.

Asheville, North Carolina

For a low-key romantic weekend away, the art-centric mountain town of Asheville won’t do you wrong. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the trendy yet traditional city, the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t to be missed. The 250-room Gilded Age chateau sits on 8,000 acres of highly-curated gardens and meadow (all designed by the very guy behind NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted) with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a super casual backdrop. Peeling yourself away from the largest mansion in the U.S., you’ll get your night’s sleep at The Windsor Boutique Hotel , a homey 14-suite rustic stay right in the heart of downtown. End your mini-retreat with brunch at Cúrate , a buzzy tapas-inspired restaurant with crowd pleasers like honey-drizzled fried eggplant and traditional tortilla española.

Kimpton Hotels know how to turn on the quirk, and the historic Palladian is no exception. Guest rooms at the Belltown spot work screenprinted Mr. T and David Bowie pillows, vintage maps, and smart brass fixtures into an otherwise classic mix. Two blocks away, you’ll find the famous Pike Place Market , your go-to place for quick bites, while luxe sit-down meals are best at The Butcher’s Table , which delivers with a raw bar, inventive sides, and every cut of steak known to man. To walk it all off, head for exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass , an IG goldmine dripping in galleries of vibrant glass sculptures—the center of which is a suspended red, yellow, and amber floral piece that lives in the Glasshouse.

Dinner is to be had at Byblos , a design-savvy, family-style Eastern Mediterranean joint that serves up duck kibbeh, Persian fried chicken, and fattouche, in an impossibly bright (and chic) dining room. Art is all around in the Magic City, and to see the best of it, you don’t need a ticket or a proper tour—simply take yourself on a self-guided walk around Ocean Drive’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings, making sure to stop for photos at favorites like Hotel Breakwater South Beach , the Leslie Hotel , the Essex House Hotel , and The Tides South Beach .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The boutique Palomar Philadelphia deftly spins an eccentric take on a classic American design scheme with neon presidential portraits, rainbow-hued busts, and plush velvet seating. Take an hour or so to hit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , a museum, outdoor art installation, and indoor gallery from mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, which takes up half a block on the once-dilapidated (and now handsomely revitalized) South Street. Or swing by the Barnes Foundation  to see a stunning display of French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. For some Philly history that isn’t the Liberty Bell, you can check out Eastern State Penitentiary —a massive, fortified prison that once held Al Capone—on an audio-guided tour narrated by the one and only Steve Buscemi. Afterwards, skip the over-hyped cheesesteaks at dueling shops Geno’s and Pat’s , and head instead for the Reading Terminal Market , where you can nom on pad thai, oyster sliders, and sweet dessert crepes all under one roof.

Austin, Texas

A weekend is all you need to see the very best of Texas’s coolest city. Kick it off with a locals-only brunch at Elizabeth St. Cafe , a chic French-Vietnamese boulangerie where coconut water and preserved tangerine margaritas are served in Chinese takeout containers. Newer spots on our radar include the Southern-inspired Colleens Kitchen, Pool Burger (we love the Blue Hawaiian, topped with grilled pineapple slices, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and Thousand Island dressing), and Aviary Wine & Kitchen. For some retail therapy, head to South Congress for an afternoon at the boutiques; United Apparel Liquidators is the place for designer couture (Balenciaga, Rag & Bone, Givenchy, to name a few) at bargain basement discounts. Don’t leave the city without going for a dip at Barton Springs Pool , the aquifer-fed swimming hole of choice where a young Robert Redford learned how to swim.

Chicago, Illinois

You can’t go to Chi-town without stopping by the Art Institute of Chicago . We’d say the same about leafy Garfield Park Conservatory , built on nearly five acres in 1906 and often referred to as “landscape art under glass;” the Chicago architecture river cruise ; and, of course, Wrigley Field . (Yes, all of these are touristy, but so worth it.) You could spend an entire weekend eating your way through this city. Some of our favorite spots to hit up now include the Michelin-starred brewpub, Band of Bohemia; the wildly popular Korean-American restaurant, Parachute (book early!); and the British-inspired Owen and Engine , which serves one of the finest burgers in town. As for where to stay, we’re digging Hotel Zachary , with its stunning grand staircase and knockout views of Wrigley Field from almost every room.

Boulder, Colorado

Just north of Denver, an outdoorsy paradise where locals are tanned, toned, and likely just back from a trail run awaits. Catch up with the best of them on the one-mile First Flatiron trail , which winds through Boulder’s iconic sandstone slab rock formations. Break for afternoon tea in an intricately carved wooden teahouse at Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse originally made in Tajikistan—it’s a highbrow prelude to an afternoon tour of Avery Brewing , home to the hoppy India Pale Ale. After a couple of brews, head back to your hotel (there’s the funky, low-key Basecamp and more upscale St. Julien Hotel and Spa ) for a quick nap before dinner at the ever-popular northeastern Italian-inspired restaurant Frasca Food and Wine run by Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson.

New Orleans, Louisiana

In the land of beignets, po’ boys and kicked-up cajun cuisine, a weekend in NOLA is all about EATING. Start the gluttony with the classic creole-inspired brunch (and 25 cent martinis!) at Commander’s Palace —the wild Louisiana white shrimp stuffed with spicy tasso ham, Crystal hot sauce, pickled okra, and pepper jelly is a must. And we can’t leave out classics like Cafe Du Monde’s famous deep-fried pastry, Bon Ton Cafe’s jambalaya, and Bevi Seafood Co.’s peacemaker po’ boy full of fried shrimp, swiss cheese, and roast beef gravy with a side of seafood gumbo. Newcomers worth checking out include Josephine Estelle , the Italian osteria at the Ace Hotel . Alternatively, skip all of that and go from breakfast to lunch to dinner at the Roch Market food hall. You’ll want to pack those fat pants.

Fountain in a park at Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia

Warning: A trip to Savannah is highly caloric. But if you don’t indulge, you’re not doing it right. The line runs down the block for Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room , for very good reason: the fried chicken, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese are so good, you’ll want to get in line all over again for dinner. Explore the city’s art scene at the various galleries around City Market on your own or sign up for a tour on the second Saturday of every month. History buffs can learn about Savannah’s past at the 1868 Mercer Williams House , the former home of Jim Williams and the site of the killing of Danny Hansford in May of 1981 (remember, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?). It’s also worth checking out the iconic Bonaventure Cemetery , dripping in Spanish moss and rumored to be full of ghosts—you can shake off the heebie-jeebies with a jalapeño margarita at the 18th century Olde Pink House .

San Diego, California

Of course, you’ll want to hit the beach in San Diego. La Jolla Cove is our personal favorite, with verdant grass that leads to craggy cliffs, but there’s so much more to do in this SoCal city. Wander the 15 (!) museums at the 1,200-acre Balboa Park , hike to the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , and feast on some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop (we love the steak, shrimp, avocado and chipotle taco).

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a reputation for being the Brooklyn of the West—which isn’t entirely unfounded, given its profusion of microbrews and macro-beards. Your first stop: Ned Ludd , where almost everything on the menu (local rabbit and roasted radishes, or chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan, for example) is cooked on a wood fire. Hike through the rainforest to feel the spray of the 627-foot waterfall at Multnomah Falls , just half an hour from downtown Portland. Leave time for a trip to peruse the two million-some volume at Powell’s City of Books , a local favorite on Burnside St.

Palm Springs, California

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor — a who’s who of showbiz has long found solace in Palm Springs. Today this desert oasis is the perfect mix of modern and kitschy which attracts a hip L.A. crowd. Spend an afternoon wandering the Uptown Design District, where eye-catching boutiques (we love the Midcentury housewares at Christopher Anthony ) are joined by retro-chic restaurants and bars. Bootlegger Tiki , Palm Canyon Drive’s mixology-centered newcomer, has a 12–2 a.m. happy hour, kitschy luau-themed décor, and hangover-worthy cocktails (we love the cheekily-named Mango Unchained.) If live music is what you seek, check out Melvyn’s , the storied supper club-style hangout once frequented by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

Shelter Island, New York

The 12-square-mile atoll sits between the tony North Fork and the Hamptons but feels a hushed world away (more than a third of the area is fiercely protected by the Nature Conservancy). Here, it’s all about unwinding, from the golden-sand beaches and hiking paths to farm fresh produce and sunset cocktails. The island’s newest place to bed down is Chequit Inn , with 37 shabby-chic rooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and complimentary breakfast. For dinner, don’t miss the Montauk pearl oysters and lobster pot pie at Vine Street Café (or pick up goodies to go at the food market out back).

Milan & Lake Como - 3 Days/ 2 Nights

Our guide, Ned, was great. The hotel Meininger was clean and comfortable in a college dormitory way, but not very friendly. I asked to reduce the centrally controlled thermostat because I sleep better when it’s cooler, and they said no. The hallways are not air conditioned at all. The rooms get hot during the day and the air conditioning won’t stay on without the key in the slot. I’d rather pay a few dollars more and adjust the temperature to my own needs. The tour has lots of walking but it was enjoyable to see Milan’s highlights. Lake Como was gorgeous scenery, perfect weather, and we had enough time for a nice meal in Bellagio and a drink in Varenna. The train ride back to Milan was standing room only, and hot and stuffy, followed by a long wait in line at the taxi stand. I’d rate the tour guide higher than the accommodations. I suppose that the name of the tour agency (Italy on a Budget) should give a warning that all is not going to be first class.

Rome To Amalfi Coast Tour

Rome To Amalfi Coast

Really great itinerary, lots of different activities to choose from and lots of information from the guides. Accommodation and meals really good, no complaints. Only thing I would say, need to know how many steps up front he Sorrento Ferry, as it was difficult for me to climb up and keep up with the group. Feel others need to know or alternative ways to reach the bus.

La Dolce Vita Experience Tour

La Dolce Vita Experience

The tour was fantastic and the hotel Michaelangelo in Sorrento was amazing. The service and meals were perfect. The only part of the tour that was disappointing was the tour in Naples . Also the initial pick up for our tour from Rome to the bigger tour bus was delayed and for over an hour 1/2 wait . We almost gave up and we would have missed a great tour . Our tour guide to Capri and Sorrento was fabulous. Capri was one of our favorite spots on our vacation.

What people love about 3 Day Italy Tours

Our trip to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Sorrento was great. The tour guides were very well organised and led three very good tours for us. Each tour was of a different theme and this made for an interesting few days. Our accommodation at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio was very comfortable, and the pool on a hot day was an added bonus. The staff were very nice and most helpful.

Plan a long weekend getaway aboard a cruise for fun, scenery and entertainment.

The Best 3-Day Cruise Itineraries

The Carnival Radiance at sea.

Hop aboard the Carnival Radiance for a short but fun-filled cruise weekend.

Whether you're short on vacation days or you only have a long weekend to spare, three-night cruises offer a fun and affordable way to get a change of scenery. These shorter sailings from the U.S. often amount to a weekend cruise and only depart from Florida and California for now. However, short cruises still let you dine and dance on board, enjoy world-class entertainment, and visit nearby destinations like Nassau in the Bahamas; Key West, Florida; or Ensenada, Mexico.

If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Read on to find out which short cruises we recommend, where they depart from, and everything you can see and do over the span of three incredible nights.

About We3Travel®

Welcome to We3Travel, an award-winning travel blog! I’m Tamara Gruber and I’m the obsessive travel planner that pores over blogs, guidebooks, videos, maps, and social media when creating my detailed trip itineraries. I love exploring what makes a destination unique through its food , culture , history , and outdoor adventures and then relaxing in a charming boutique or luxury hotel .

Our family of three is exploring the world one trip at a time from our home base in Rhode Island. We aren’t budget travelers, but we also aren’t independently wealthy so we strive for attainable luxury in our travels with an emphasis on experiences (and food!)

Grubers on Camels

Tamara is a former marketing executive and the writer/editor/photographer. Glenn is a digital strategist for a large consulting firm and a future sommelier. Hannah is an astrophysics college student who loves soft adventure. I am always on the hunt for cheap international flights, but we also love road trips, National Parks, and discovering hidden gems in nearby New England.

When Glenn can’t join us, Hannah and I head out on mother-daughter trips that usually involve some sort of adventure or an epic road trip. I also cover my solo travels, girls’ trips, and romantic getaways on my sister site for midlife women Your Time to Fly .

We believe that family travel strengthens our bonds and creates long-lasting memories. It has also helped us raise an empowered, resilient girl who is open to new experiences and cares deeply about our world and other people.

We love finding emerging destinations, having cultural/educational experiences, adventuring outside together, and exploring a destination through its food. We hope you will follow along !

How I Can Help You

I’m an obsessive travel planner that spends an insane amount of time researching and creating our itineraries to ensure the smoothest trip possible. After all, fun trips mean a happy family and great memories! And that is the goal, right? Enjoying your time together instead of stressing over logistics?

On We3Travel you will find a combination of tips, reviews, destination guides, and sample itineraries for travel with teens and tweens. And since many of our travels aren’t “kid” oriented, these work well for couples, singles, and empty-nesters too.

How We Afford to Travel

It is common in the travel industry to accept complimentary or hosted accommodations, meals, tickets, and tours in exchange for an honest review. Sometimes, brands or destinations will even pay for travel writers to visit a destination and create content about the experience — from videos, photos, or articles.

From time to time, we do accept both of these arrangements to help cover my expenses as a travel writer, and they are always fully disclosed in the coverage. We strive to be unbiased and look at things from an objective perspective whether we are hosted, paid, or paying full price.

In fact, it is more typical that we are traveling on our own using a combination of points/miles and cash just like you. Luckily, I am also able to earn a living from this blog through a combination of advertising revenue, affiliate commissions, and marketing campaigns. To learn more, you can read our full disclosure statement .

3 Incredible Itineraries for Travelers Heading to Greece This Year

Three Greece travel experts weigh in on how to craft the perfect trip — top hotels, informative tours, and Cycladic islands included.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

Monica Farber/Travel + Leisure

In the past few years, tourism to Greece has boomed. With the summer high season only a few months away, now’s the time to lock in your own plans, whether they call for a tour of the classics or something a little more adventurous. Here, a collection of trips from the three Greece experts on Travel + Leisure ’s A-List .

A Classic Crowd Pleaser, Arranged by Petros G. Zissimos of Hellenic Holidays

Ian Dagnall/Alamy

This quintessential itinerary includes visits to some of Greece’s most iconic destinations, Zissimos says, adding that “it’s our most popular trip for 2023 so far.” Touch down in Athens, where you can hit highlights such as the Acropolis and Areopagus with a guide, then explore neighborhoods like Kolonaki and Plaka on your own. Zissimos recommends staying two nights at the well-situated Electra Metropolis before heading off to the Cycladic island of Mílos, accessible either by air (45 minutes) or by ferry (from three hours).

Seux Paule/Hemis/Alamy

“Mílos has dozens of beaches to visit, with different combinations of sand, stone, and shells,” says Zissimos, who’s especially partial to Sarakiniko. He also recommends a sailing excursion to Kleftiko, where volcanic rock formations make for spectacular photos, and an evening in the town of Adamantas, where tavernas line the waterfront. The seaside Melian Boutique Hotel & Spa , on the northeastern tip of the island, is a go-to for Zissimos.

Matteo Colombo/Getty Images

You’ll need a morning for the four-hour ferry ride to Naxos, an island offering a solid combo of archaeological sites and contemporary adventures. “There’s a beach for everything here,” Zissimos notes. “Agios Georgios is known for windsurfing, while Mikri Vigla is the place for kitesurfing.” In between, Zissimos can arrange guided visits to the Temple of Demeter and the Portara, the 2,500-year-old marble gate that stands at the entrance to Naxos Harbor. His preferred place to stay is Villa Marandi Suites , with its whitewashed ocean-view rooms.

After breakfast, catch a high-speed ferry (90 minutes) to Santorini, then check in to the cliff-top Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection . Spend the next day on a sailing excursion, complete with snorkeling stops. Zissimos can also set up wine tastings and recommend hikes, like the coastal path from Fira to nearby Imerovigli, with its jaw-dropping views of the caldera. Zissimos suggests leaving time for dinner in the ever-in-demand village of Oia, known for its sunsets. From there, ferry or fly back to Athens for the trip home.

Something Less Expected, Planned by Christos Stergiou of TrueTrips

P Tomlins/Alamy

The capital is a must-see, Stergiou says, “because its classical history has so distinctly influenced modern thought.” He suggests a guided tour that takes in both the ancient and the contemporary, with visits to the Acropolis Museum and the Temple of Olympian Zeus as well as landmarks around central Syntagma Square, including the Greek Parliament. Conveniently, his hotel pick, Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel , is located on the same square. “It’s the grande dame of Athenian hotels,” Stergiou says.

Izzet Keribar/Getty Images

From Athens, head for Patmos, “an island that exudes a unique aura thanks to its seemingly untouched natural beauty,” Stergiou says, adding that it’s a Christian pilgrimage site, as it is believed to be the place where the Book of Revelation was written. His favorites include the village of Chora, a UNESCO World Heritage site and “one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in the Aegean.” Stergiou can also arrange for private boat excursions for sightseeing, swimming off uncrowded beaches, and dining in a hyperlocal family-run restaurant. His go-to hotel is close to his heart: the Petra has been in the Stergiou family since 1989. The 11-suite inn is now part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Courtesy of Cosme, A Luxury Collection Resort

After a late checkout, hop aboard the overnight ferry from Patmos back to Athens — in a private cabin, of course. In the morning, it’s an easy one-hour flight to Páros, a place Stergiou calls “up-and-coming, or maybe already there.” Make your way, with a guide, to the island’s north and the Environmental and Cultural Park of Páros. The area “is filled with fascinating attractions, including the old shipyard and the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Detis, built right above the sea.” Check in at Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort , where Stergiou likes the Aether suites, with their sea views. Spend the rest of your time either lounging on Páros’s sandy beaches or making day trips to nearby islands like Antiparos, before taking the ferry (from 90 minutes) over to Santorini.

Ståle Eriksen/Courtesy of Canaves Oia Epitome

“It’s not exactly under the radar,” Stergiou notes of Santorini, “but with the right guides, you can still tap in to the more traditional side of the island.” He recommends spending one day exploring Assyrtiko vineyards, such as Domaine Sigalas; he also suggests a guided walk through Oia, the picturesque if popular village that still conceals a few lesser-known corners. As for where to stay, the Canaves Oia Epitome strikes the right balance between proximity to the island’s best restaurants and seclusion — particularly when you’re booked in a one-bedroom pool villa. Stergiou suggests one last night back at the Grande Bretagne before your flight home.

Off the Tourist Trail, Recommended by Mina Agnos of Travelive

Joanna Kalafatis/Alamy

Start in Athens, Agnos says, “but unless you’ve never been to the Acropolis, I’d suggest instead a tour of the stunning archaeological site of Cape Sounion, south of the city, where there are spectacular sunsets.” Spend another day on a guided tour of the city’s cafés and ouzeri, low-key bars that serve the anise-flavored spirit along with platters of meze. Agnos loves the centrally located and newly opened hotel Xenodocheio Milos , from the group behind the Estiatorio Milos restaurants.

Spiros Papadakis/iStockphoto/Getty Images

Your next stop is Sérifos, “a Cycladic island that has some of the most stunning beaches in Greece, including sandy Psili Ammos, which is often on lists of Europe’s best,” Agnos says. More rugged and lesser-known than nearby spots such as Mílos, it’s nevertheless easily accessible by ferry (from two hours). Agnos suggests taking time to explore the island’s mythological sites, such as the ancient construction known as the Throne of the Cyclops, before spending time swimming or hiking. She recommends the Hotel Rizes overlooking the port.

Emi Cristea/iStockphoto/Getty Images

From there, it’s onward by ferry (from 6 1⁄2 hours) to Naxos, the beachy island that’s also a favorite of Zissimos. For her part, Agnos recommends the island’s many hikes (like a half-day round-trip from the village of Chalki) and can also arrange for cooking or pottery classes. Stay at the hilltop 18 Grapes , with its two pools and views of the sea, or Naxian on the Beach , which has 10 seafront suites.

Athina Psoma/Alamy

From Naxos, it’s an easier ferry (from 90 minutes) west to Sífnos, a less-visited Cycladic island with a growing reputation for food. “It’s famous in Greece for having some of the country’s best culinary experiences,” Agnos explains, as it’s the birthplace of distinctive dishes such as revithada, a chickpea stew, and mastelo, red-wine-braised lamb. The island also has its share of hikes, from easy three-mile loops to challenging nine-milers. Agnos recommends a stay at the Elies Resorts , on Vathi Beach.

Day 1-2: Canggu or Seminyak

Welcome to Bali! The beach towns of Canggu and Seminyak are less than an hour’s drive from the airport. Because of this, it’s a great place to kick off your Bali 3-week itinerary.

Both towns also have fantastic shopping, so spend some time browsing vintage shops and trendy concept stores. Canggu is particularly great for shopping. Plus, if you’re here at the weekend, you should check out the lively La Brisa Sunday Market.

If you’re looking for prettier beaches and a more sophisticated resort-style location, Seminyak is a better option. This side of the island also boasts some of the best sunsets; we recommend heading to the clifftop temple Pura Tanah Lot for some spectacular golden views.

Alternatively, simply grab a beanbag at one of the beach bars to watch the show; it’s a must-do while following this Bali travel guide!

Once the sun has gone down, hit the clubs in Seminyak, which has one of the best nightlife scenes on the island.

Tip: It is a 20-minute drive or a 40-minute walk between the two towns, so you can easily base yourself in one place and split your time between the two.

How to get to Canggu and Seminyak

Canggu and Seminyak are very close and easily accessible from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

It will take 35-45 minutes to drive to Seminyak and 45 minutes to an hour to reach Canggu. This is all dependent on traffic, particularly during the high season, when queues can be expected. A taxi from the airport costs approximately 300,000 IDR (~ 20 USD). Unfortunately, you can’t order a Grab taxi from the airport.

Day 3: Jatiluwih Rice Terraces or a Local Homestay

Nestled in the center of Bali is Jatiluwih, an area of stunning rice terraces over 600 acres in size. For the third day of your Bali travel guide, explore this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site on foot. Alternatively, hire a bicycle, and take in the natural beauty of vibrant yellow and green rice fields, palm trees, and mountain views. It is not that touristy, so you can peacefully enjoy this incredible natural landscape away from the crowds.

If you want to give your legs a break, you can also stop off at the cafes scattered around the area. Sip on hot coffee and homemade rice cookies before heading out again.

Tip: Please remember that the rice terraces are working land, so be a respectful and sustainable traveler by staying on the designated paths as much as possible and taking trash with you.

Bali Homestay

Alternatively (or additionally!), allocate some time on your Bali 3-week itinerary to get to know Balinese locals at a homestay. Staying with a local family is a fantastic way to meet new people and make lifelong friends! It will also give you a taste of day-to-day life in Bali, and you’ll learn something new about the culture and traditions. We stayed at a homestay in Gadungan, an hour’s drive from Jatiluwih.

From Canggu and Seminyak, it takes approximately 1.5 hours to drive. Please note that the traffic in Canggu can be particularly bad, so be extra careful if you are on a motorbike. Alternatively, hire a private driver if you don’t feel that confident.

Day 4-5: Munduk

The next stop on our Bali travel guide is Munduk. This stunning mountain region in the north of Bali is home to towering waterfalls, shimmering lakes, and some of the best coffee on the island! The higher altitude means cooler weather, so it’s a great place to escape the coastal heat and relax in peaceful surroundings.

Don’t miss a visit to Ulun Danu Bratan while you’re here; the floating water temple in Tamblingan Lake is easily one of the most beautiful temples in Bali. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds, as it is a popular spot. Alternatively, book a tour exploring Ulun Bratan, the Twin Lakes, and waterfalls.

Before you leave Munduk, head up to the Wanagiri Swing viewpoint for sunrise, where you will be met by panoramic views of the beautiful Twin Lakes.

Tip: If you have time on your Bali itinerary, you can also take a tour of a local coffee plantation. However, we recommend avoiding the infamous Luwak coffee; many producers use unethical and cruel practices, and 80% of the time, it is not even ‘real’ Luwak coffee!

Day 6-9: Ubud

There is so much to see and do in this vibrant village, which is the spiritual and cultural heart of the island. There is a reason it is one of the more popular destinations and a must-see on any Bali itinerary; historic temples with traditional ceremonies, a dynamic art culture, and stunning natural surroundings mean you’ll never want to leave. Fill your days with traditional cooking classes , visits to beautiful temples, and afternoon tubing trips down the river!

Activities in Ubud

On days 6 and 7, explore Ubud on foot. This is the best way to discover its hidden corners, cozy cafes, art markets with handcrafted souvenirs, and peaceful rice fields. For an evening stroll, we recommend the Campuhan Ridge Walk, which is popular among dog walkers and local families.

Allocate one of your days in Ubud to join a day trip to the incredible Mount Batur ! It’s only an hour and a half away and is one of Bali’s most sacred volcanoes. Hike up in the dark to catch the sunrise at the summit. It’s well worth it, as it’s a relatively easy trek that pays you back tenfold with panoramic views over the whole island. This is easily one of the best things to do in our Bali travel guide!

Uluwatu – Our Bali travel guide favorite

Uluwatu is a little more off-the-beaten-track than Canggu and slightly more upmarket, so it is a good choice if you’re looking for a bit of luxury to end your Bali itinerary. Spend a few peaceful days exploring the beautiful beaches, discovering lovely cafes, and motorbiking along clifftops with the wind in your hair.

Where to Stay in Uluwatu / Canggu

How to Visit Bali in 3 Weeks

Denpasar-Ngurah Rai International Airport is where you will fly into when visiting Bali. It is located on the southern tip of the island, close to Canggu, Seminyak, and Uluwatu.

If you are already traveling around Indonesia , you also have the option to take the ferry from Jakarta, Lombok, or the Gili Islands, among other places.

Traveling around Bali

Although Bali is relatively small, and driving distances can look very short on the map, be aware that heavy traffic can increase traveling times significantly, especially during the high season in July and August.

balinese street

By Motorbike

One of the easiest and most flexible ways to travel around Bali is by motorcycle. This is the best way to explore the island at your own pace, and you can make stops whenever you feel like it. You also have unimpeded views of the beautiful countryside! Additionally, renting a scooter is very affordable, with daily rates starting from as little as ~4 USD per day and cheap fuel.

rent motorbike bali

The downside is that some roads aren’t in that good condition (although this is continually improving) and the streets can get very busy, especially during the high season. If you are not that confident on a scooter, you might prefer an alternative form of transport to complete your Bali itinerary.

Travel Insurance Don't forget a travel insurance for your Bali trip! Heymondo covers medical emergencies, theft, delays, cancellations, lost luggage, and more, with 24/7 worldwide assistance and medical chat. As a Salt in our Hair reader, we've got you 5% off! Check Heymondo here

By Private Driver

Renting a car is a slightly safer option than a motorcycle. However, traffic is an issue in Bali, and it can take a long time to get from A to B. For that reason, we recommend hiring a private driver , which is very cost-effective, especially for a small group with lots of luggage.

bali driver group trip

For day trips or multi-day itineraries, the driver will wait for you at each place, and the price is set for the day, so there are no surprising hidden costs.

Hiring a driver in Bali costs around 35 USD per day, which is around the same price as a car rental without the hassle of navigating, parking, and getting fuel!

Public buses are popular among the locals and an extremely cheap way to get from A to B, with an hour’s journey costing around 2 USD. However, if you are short on time, this isn’t the best option, as the schedules are a little unreliable. It will also take much longer than a scooter or taxi, and you may have to change several times to get to where you want to go.

Taxis are a very affordable and convenient way to travel short distances. However, always check that the meter is on or agree to a price beforehand! An even cheaper option is ride-sharing apps like Grab or Go-Jek. However, these aren’t allowed in some areas, like the airport, for instance.

For longer trips and for traveling between popular tourist attractions, it is better and cheaper to rent a private car and driver for the day.

How Much Do 3 Weeks in Bali Cost?

The cost of your trip will depend on what time of year you visit, which part of the island you’re in, and what you like to spend your money on. Bali is generally a very affordable travel destination, however, and if you go outside of the high season months of July and August, you can also find cheap accommodation in most places.

Costs of Traveling in Bali

Travel on a budget in Bali, from $200 − $500 USD weekly per person, mid-range $530 − $1180 USD, and high-end from $1160 − $1810 USD. However, costs depend on factors like accommodation, transportation, and activities. We did not include flights. Check flight prices here

Best Time to Visit Bali for 3 Weeks

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season between April and October, when the weather is best for sightseeing, beach days, surfing, snorkeling, and diving. We recommend avoiding the high season of July and August. It gets crowded with local and international tourists, and prices go up to reflect this.

The wet season is much quieter, accommodation is cheaper, and the countryside is lush and beautiful. However, be prepared for at least a few hours of rain a day!

Tip: April, May, September, and October are the best months to follow this Bali travel guide. This is when the rice paddies are at their greenest and most vibrant, right before harvest.

Do I Need a Visa for My Bali 3-Week Itinerary?

Most people will need a visa for Bali unless their country has a Visa Exemption Agreement. You can get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) when you land at the airport, which is valid for 30 days and costs 500,000 IDR (~ 33 USD). To avoid long queues at the airport, apply electronically at least 48 hours before you arrive.

Is Bali Safe?

Bali is generally a very safe place to travel and is one of the safest destinations in Indonesia. There is a small level of petty crime, such as phone theft or pickpocketing, particularly in the more touristy areas, so exercise caution and always watch your belongings.

Read: Top travel safety tips!

Traffic is the main issue on the island, especially during the high season in July and August, and there are very few pavements. This is something to consider if it’s your first time riding a motorcycle, and be careful while walking around the busier areas.

Tip: Although a volcanic eruption on Bali is unlikely, check the local news or government website for warnings before attempting the hike up Mount Batur.

Travel Insurance Bali

Travel insurance is an essential purchase for any trip away. It gives you peace of mind and may also save you money in the long run if anything unexpected happens while you are away. You can buy single-trip insurance very cheaply, and there are plenty of options if you are traveling long-term.

What to Pack for a Bali 3-Week Itinerary

What you pack for your 3 weeks in Bali may change depending on what time of year you visit. If you are here during the wet season, waterproofs and suitable footwear are a must-have, while the hot weather of the dry season will require more sunscreen! Try to pack as light as possible, especially if you are moving around a lot.

Bali Travel Guide: Packing List

  • Layers – Useful for when you are up in the mountains where temperatures are much cooler (particularly at night) and for motorcycle trips.
  • Universal travel plug – A great addition to any trip, so your electronics can be charged wherever you are. ( Get one here )
  • Raincoat – In the rainy season, this is an essential item in Bali! It may come in handy during the dry season when there are occasional showers or to keep the wind off while motorbiking.
  • Hat – Essential for keeping the sun off your face while sightseeing, hiking, or simply sunbathing on the beach.
  • Good footwear – Good hiking boots, sneakers, or sturdy sandals are a must for your Bali 3-week itinerary. You will need good shoes for hiking in the mountains or the rice paddies.

  • Sarong – Most sacred temples require everyone to cover up their legs out of respect. There is often an option to rent these, but it’s good to have one packed just in case, even if it’s just to cover up from the sun.
  • Microfibre towel – A small, lightweight towel is great for beach days and waterfall trips, as they fit easily into a small bag and dry very quickly.
  • Camera – You need something to capture all the incredible sights on your Bali itinerary! Consider a waterproof camera or a GoPro for snorkeling and diving or for that perfect waterfall shot.
  • Power bank – Helpful for day trips, mountain hikes, and power outages, a power bank is a great backup to have on hand.  Get one here .
  • Small backpack – A small day bag or backpack is convenient for day trips, so you can just bring the essentials.

  • Non-toxic insect repellent – Choose an insect repellent that isn’t made with harmful chemicals like DEET.
  • Non-toxic sunscreen – Opt for a reef-safe sunscreen , which helps to protect marine life.

Hello, thank you for all the information, it help me so much to plan my trip to Bali in may! I will be visiting the island for 17 days, I would really appreciate if you provide any feedback on the itinerary D1 : Uluwatu D2-5 : Ubud and the area D6: Mount Batur D7-8: Munduk D9: Amed D10-11: Sidemen D12-14 Gili or Nusa penida? D15-17 Canggu/Seminyak (2 nights) Would you recommend Nusa Penida or Gili Air (as we don’t have a driving license)?

Thanks a lot !

Hi Colyne, looks like you are planning on seeing some of Bali’s best! Depending on where you’re flying from, you might want to have a few days to unwind from the journey. Amed is worth exploring for a few days, hopping around the different fishing villages and beaches (+ the journey from Munduk to Amed is not short). From Amed, it’s also really easy to get to the Gili Islands by fast boat! Gili Air is really small and doesn’t have any cars, so this is a great option to explore cycling around. From there, you can return to Amed and explore Sidemen after on your way to Canggu/Seminyak. Hope that helps a bit!

Vacation Vibes: 13 Travel Tips for a Relaxing and Stress-Free Trip

Traveling is an exciting and enriching experience but can also be stressful and overwhelming. Many factors can contribute to a less-than-ideal vacation, from packing and planning to navigating unfamiliar destinations.

However, with the right strategies and travel tips, you can ensure your next trip is smooth and enjoyable. This article will explore some of the best ways to minimize stress and maximize enjoyment so you can make the most of your time away.

1. Prepare Your Home Before Going on Vacation

home security

Preparing your home before an extended vacation or work trip is important for several reasons: it wards off burglars, prevents damage to your home, and saves money.

  • Security: Turn on security cameras, set alarms, and put lights on timers
  • Access: Put away your hidden spare key or give it to someone you trust
  • Refrigerator: Leave it running, but clean it out
  • Thermostat: 5 degrees higher in the summer and 5 degrees lower in the winter
  • Appliances: Unplug all other appliances to save on your electric bill
  • Valuables: Hide your valuables or lock them up in a safe
  • Mail: Use the USPS Hold Mail service (up to 30 days)

Knowing that your home is safe and secure will give you peace of mind while you’re away.

2. Handling Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and Cash

passport credit cards

No matter which form of payment you choose, always notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans so they can monitor your account for unusual activity and help prevent fraud. You’ll also what to inquire about foreign transaction fees if you travel abroad.

Using a credit card on vacation can have advantages over using a debit card. First, many credit cards offer rewards or cashback for purchases, which can help offset your vacation costs.

As well, credit cards offer more protection against fraud and unauthorized charges. If your credit card is lost or stolen, you can usually dispute the charges and not be held responsible. With a debit card, if someone gets hold of your card and PIN, they can empty your checking account.

How Much Cash Should You Travel With? The amount of cash you should bring on vacation depends on several factors, including your destination, trip length, budget, and personal preferences. A general rule of thumb is to get enough cash to cover your expenses for the first few days of your trip in case your credit cards are not accepted, or there’s a problem with your account.

Keeping Your Money Safe While Traveling . Keep cash, credit cards, and essential documents in a hidden pouch or money belt worn under your clothing to keep them safe from pickpockets. Also, be discreet when using cash or credit cards, and do not flash large amounts of cash publicly to avoid catching a thief’s eye.

3. Preparing and Using Your Mobile Device Abroad

effiel tower photo

Contact your mobile carrier to inquire about international roaming plans, data usage rates, and other related charges that may apply when using your device abroad. Here are a few tips for preparing and using your cellphone while abroad:

  • Some mobile carriers offer international roaming plans that allow you to use your existing SIM card or an eSIM card while traveling abroad. These plans may include additional charges and limits on data usage.
  • In some countries, purchasing a local SIM card may be more cost-effective. This can be a good option if you plan to use your phone frequently and want to avoid high international roaming charges.
  • Download offline maps and translation apps before your trip so you don’t have to waste your data.
  • Make sure you have a travel adapter compatible with the outlets in the country you’re visiting, so you can charge your device.

Generally, checking with your mobile carrier and researching your options before traveling is the best course of action.

4. Get Travel Insurance: It’s Worth The Peace of Mind

travel insurance

Travel insurance provides financial protection in the event of unexpected situations or emergencies while traveling.

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Travel insurance can cover costs incurred if you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, such as illness, severe weather, or a death in the family.
  • Medical Emergencies: Travel insurance can cover medical expenses if you become ill or injured while traveling. This can include emergency medical treatment, evacuation, and repatriation.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: Travel insurance can cover lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items.
  • Emergency Assistance: Travel insurance can provide access to emergency assistance services, such as help with finding a doctor, arranging transportation, and providing translation services.

Be sure to read the policy’s fine print to understand what is covered and what is excluded before purchasing a travel insurance policy.

5. Research the Destination: Safety, Culture, and Laws

travel planning

Researching your destination before vacation can help you better prepare for your trip and get the most out of your experience. Here are a few travel tips to consider during your research:

  • Safety: Researching a destination can help you understand the safety risks and precautions you should take while traveling. This can include information on crime rates, dangerous locations, natural hazards, and political instability. Check out the U.S. Travel Advisory website.
  • Culture and Customs: Understanding the culture and customs of a destination can help you better appreciate the local way of life and avoid any unintentional cultural mistakes.
  • Laws and Regulations: Researching the destination’s laws and regulations can help you understand any restrictions or requirements you need to be aware of while traveling, such as visa requirements or local laws.

6. Create a Loose Travel Itinerary

travel books

Creating a travel itinerary can help you make the most of your vacation time and ensure that you get all the important sights and activities. It can help you budget your time and money by allowing you to plan out your activities and expenses in advance. It can also help you avoid rushing from place to place or feeling overwhelmed by too many options.

7. Make Copies of Your Important Travel Documents

passport

One of the most important travel tips is making copies of important travel documents, such as a passport, ID, and credit cards, before going on vacation. If the original documents are lost or stolen, having copies can help with replacement or verification processes. It’s also important to keep these copies in different places. Consider keeping a digital copy, a paper copy, and leaving a copy with a trusted friend or family member.

8. Stay Organized With A Travel Packing Checklist

A travel packing checklist is a great way to ensure you remember all necessary items before and after your vacation. It allows you to make a comprehensive list of everything you need to bring and to check off items as you pack them. This can save time and reduce stress by eliminating the need to constantly second-guess yourself about what you need to bring.

Additionally, a travel packing checklist can help you stay organized and ensure you have all the essentials, such as your passport, tickets, and medications, that you’ll need for your trip. Using a travel packing checklist can also help you avoid overpacking and reduce the chance of leaving something behind, saving you money and hassle in the long run.

9. Airport Travel Tips

airport

Airports can be stressful, but there are steps you can take to make your experience as smooth as possible. By planning ahead, packing wisely, arriving early, staying organized, and being mindful, you can reduce stress and ensure a more pleasant airport experience. Additionally, staying calm and patient can help keep things in perspective when unexpected issues arise.

Here are several airport travel tips you can use to travel a little easier:

  • Arrive Early: Give yourself plenty of time to check in, clear security, and find your gate.
  • Check-In Online: Many airlines allow you to check in and print your boarding pass at home, saving you time at the airport.
  • Pack Smart: Pack only what you need and be mindful of the size and weight of your luggage. Check with your airline for their carry-on and checked baggage allowances.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothes: Dress comfortably for your flight and wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off for security.
  • Knowing What You Can Bring: Be familiar with the TSA’s guidelines for carry-on and checked baggage and what items are prohibited.
  • Stay Organized: Keep your travel documents, ID, and other important items easily accessible and organized.
  • Stay Connected: Keep your phone and other devices charged, and consider a portable charger or battery pack.
  • Be Patient: Air travel can be stressful, but stay patient and calm. Remember that things may not always go as planned, but you’ll reach your destination eventually.
  • Research the Airport: Learn about the layout, amenities, lounges, and services available at your airport so you know where to go and what to expect.

10. Take A Guided Tour With A Local Expert

tour

Going on a tour during your vacation can be a great way to experience a destination in a more authentic and meaningful way. A tour can provide a deeper understanding of a place’s history, culture, and customs and offer unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences that may be difficult to find on your own.

Tours are often led by local experts who can provide valuable insights and information about the places you visit. They can also introduce you to local people, customs, and traditions, giving you a more authentic and memorable travel experience.

Going on a tour can also save you time and hassle, as they often include transportation, guides, and admission fees, making your trip more efficient and hassle-free.

Additionally, tours can be a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends, especially if you’re traveling solo. They can also be a great way to discover new places and try new activities you might not have considered.

It’s important to note that there are many types of tours, from big bus tours to small group and private tours. It’s worth researching and choosing the right tour that aligns with your travel style, interests, and budget.

My go-to online tour booking platform is Viator.com . I’ve been on walking tours, mural tours, canal, and river tours, and day trips booked through Viator, and I’ve never had an issue within the US or abroad!

11. Use Public Transportation When Available

Vacation Vibes: 13 Travel Tips for a Relaxing and Stress-Free Trip

Using public transportation on vacation can be a great way to save money , avoid the stress of driving, and experience a destination like a local. Public transportation options, such as buses, subways, and trains, can be much cheaper than renting a car, taking taxis, or using a ride-share app. They can also provide a more immersive travel experience.

Additionally, many cities around the world have excellent public transportation systems that are reliable, efficient, and easy to navigate. They often offer a convenient way to get around and see the sights without needing a car, which can save you money on parking and gas.

Moreover, public transportation can also be a more environmentally friendly option, reducing your carbon footprint and supporting sustainable travel practices.

12. Relax and Practice Self-Care

self care spa

Setting realistic expectations for your vacation and avoiding over-scheduling or feeling like you need to be doing something constantly. Self-care is crucial to maintaining overall well-being, and it is vital to include self-care activities during a vacation.

Self-Care Travel Tips Include:

  • Packing snacks in case you have to miss a meal
  • Always carry a water bottle to keep you hydrated
  • Make sure that you are getting adequate sleep
  • Stay active or schedule time to exercise.
  • Add a few healthy meals to your diet

Taking time to rest and rejuvenate can help you return to your daily life feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

13. Use Your Out-of-Office Reply

Aruba - Dutch Carribean Island

Yes, setting an out-of-office reply is one of the essential travel tips and will ensure you can fully disconnect and enjoy your vacation. This will let anyone who contacts you via email know that you are away and when they can expect a response from you. It also can avoid the unnecessary stress and pressure of checking and responding to emails while you are away. This will help you relax and enjoy your vacation without worrying about work-related matters.

Use These Travel Tips For a Stress-Free Trip

With these travel tips, you can make your trip or vacation a hassle-free and enjoyable experience. From using a packing list and credit card rewards to using public transportation and going on a tour, these strategies can help you make the most of your time away. 7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

3 travel trip

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

3 travel trip

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

3 travel trip

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

3 travel trip

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

3 travel trip

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

3 travel trip

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

3 travel trip

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Since 1926, AAA’s free TourBook guides have been providing trustworthy travel information to AAA members. The digital guide is the same great TourBook you know and love, but now you can get that information and more in an eco-friendly, easy-to-use format on your smartphone, tablet or desktop. It is also downloadable, so you can access the guide wherever you are at any time of day.

You can find a hotel with ease and book your room with just a click of the Book Now button. Save money with access to special deals and benefits available only to AAA members, and you can rest assured that wherever you choose to stay, it will be clean and comfortable. Or follow the link to contact a travel agent at your local AAA office. They can assist you with a complete vacation package from finding the best deals and booking your hotel to helping you plan an entire itinerary.

All hotels in the guide have earned a AAA Diamond designation by going through rigorous evaluations conducted by AAA’s team of professional inspectors. Not only are they clean; you can know what level of amenities are offered making it easy to choose a hotel that best suits your budget and your preferences.

Save time planning your trip by using our helpful articles. AAA’s team of travel editors has created one-day itineraries that you can follow exactly to get the most out of a short excursion. Alternatively, use them as a guide to get an idea of where things are in a city to assist in planning your trip, so you don’t waste valuable vacation time.

Our travel editors also have identified must-see attractions including AAA GEMs (Great Experience for Members ® ) that shouldn’t be missed. These include stops ranging from the Montréal Botanical Garden and The Field Museum in Chicago to the Painted Desert in the Petrified Forest National Park. They have also noted top places to take children, so everyone of all ages has a good time during your family vacation.

Unlike the printed guides, the digital TourBook includes road trips. You can use these to plan out an entire itinerary like a classic trip down Route 66 or a drive up the Northern California coast. Our suggested routes include stops such as tasty local restaurants to refuel, museums to learn about the area, and parks to recharge and stretch your legs in an idyllic setting. Or use them to take a detour down a scenic byway through forests, around lakes and even for leaf-peeping in the fall.

  • Diamond-designated restaurants with information on cuisine
  • Sports and recreation, including where to catch games as well as places to hike, bike, golf and other activities
  • Recreation charts to quickly identify national, state, provincial and local parks, as well as available activities and amenities
  • High-quality maps to see nearby cities, national parks and scenic natural features
  • Interactive table of contents that navigates where you want in just a click
  • Shopping information on malls and specialty districts
  • Nightlife articles to find the best bars and late-night eats

For more than 80 years, AAA’s expert inspectors have been evaluating hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean. They conduct surprise evaluations based on a rigorous set of guidelines to provide members with detailed comments on what to expect at AAA Diamond-designated hotels and restaurants.

Unlike other rating systems that are based solely on travelers’ experiences, AAA inspectors determine Diamond designations on-site and according to established guidelines and requirements. The AAA Diamond Program reflects the latest in industry trends and travelers’ expectations. The designations not only indicate the level of amenities that you can expect at a property; they also assure that hotels offer a clean, comfortable experience no matter the budget.

Our team of AAA travel editors has been providing travel advice and information for members since the release of the first TourBook in 1926. They are experienced travelers who provide in-depth information on cities and attractions as well as sample travel plans. With the AAA TourBook guides, AAA’s travel information is more convenient than ever.

There are a few ways to get AAA maps. Firstly, you can stop by your local AAA office to pick up paper maps of U.S., Canada and Mexico — for free for AAA members. Plus, select offices carry an atlas of North America.

The second way you can get maps is via the AAA Map Gallery , an online gallery where you can access printable maps of destinations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as maps of cruise terminals and national parks.

The other way to access maps is with TripTik Travel Planner . The TripTik tool allows you to plan and save routes, find important points of interest like hotels (including pet-friendly hotels), campgrounds, restaurants and attractions as well as identify locations that offer discounts and savings to AAA members.

How The 3-3-3 Rule Can Save Your RV Road Trip

S ometimes, we can get so caught up in the excitement of a road trip that we forget to take some important safety precautions like planning out rest stops and setting expectations for how long to spend in one place. The 3-3-3 rule is a great way to remind ourselves that rest and relaxation are an essential part of a road trip, especially when traveling around in an RV . The rule goes like this: Never drive more than 300 miles in a day; arrive at your camp before 3 p.m.; and plan to stay at a destination along your route for at least 3 days.

By following this rule you can prevent accidents, get your camp set up safely, and actually be able to enjoy your trip while getting that R&R you need. While this isn't the only rule out there, it is one that's commonly used to keep RVers safe while on the road.

The 3-3-3 Rule Can Keep You Safe And Well-Rested

So now that you know what the 3-3-3 rule is, let's go over why each of those steps is so important. When driving an RV cross-country or just a very long distance, it can be tempting to try and get to your ultimate destination as quickly as possible. However, if you've ever driven even 100 miles in a day you can probably imagine the fatigue that sets in after another 200. If you're doing all that driving, you might be putting yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road at risk. So, this is your sign to take stops along the way, switch drivers if/when possible, and plan your stops accordingly.

The next part of the rule is to arrive before 3 p.m. This is so you have time to set up your camp before the sun sets and so you can enjoy the area a bit on your first day there. This is also a good rule since most campground attendants are only on duty from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so if you need help with something and you've arrived after 3 p.m., you're probably on your own until the next day. Finally, there's the last part of the rule. By doing a bit of slow travel and staying at least 3 days, you'll have time to recover from driving and the opportunity to fully enjoy the stop along your route.

Other Numerical Rules You Can Follow

If you find this particular 3-3-3 rule doesn't work for your road trip plans, consider that it can also be adjusted. For instance, you can take a break after every 3 hours of driving. If you hate the monotony of driving, this can break it up into nice little chunks, making it a bit more manageable.

Similar to the 3-3-3 rule, you can try the 2-2-2 rule which is that you only drive 200 miles in a day, try to arrive before 2 p.m., and spend 2 nights at your destination. This means you'll be making more stops along the road trip route with less time spent driving in a day. This is great for RVers who would rather stop to see more places along the way but spend a little less time there.

Meanwhile, the 4-4-4 rule involves longer driving times and longer stays at a single destination. With extended driving times, it's recommended that you definitely have another person with you who is capable of driving an RV. This would also be a rule better left to those more experienced with RVs since it involves arriving later in the afternoon or evening when there will likely be no campground attendant available to help out.

Best carry-on luggage for your next trip

KTRK logo

As a participant in multiple affiliate marketing programs, Localish will earn a commission for certain purchases. See full disclaimer below*

The best carry-on luggage can easily fit in an airplane's overhead compartment and hold all your travel essentials without giving way. I spoke to Briggs & Reiley CEO Richard Krulik about what makes a good carry-on and listed the best carry-on luggage to buy now. Krulik only provided general shopping guidance, he did not make any product recommendations.

Carry-on luggage buying guide

Spinner wheels: "You want smooth wheels since that makes a huge difference when you're rolling the bag through a very long terminal," says Krulik. 360-degree spinner wheels are the best as they can rotate in any direction and will glide smoothly at the airport or train station.

Additional pockets: "A front pocket is always a real plus on a carry-on because you may want quick access to a magazine or a light jacket," says Krulik. Some carry-ons also have extra back pockets.

Telescopic handle: "You also want a firm solid handle that's not flimsy or wobbly," says Krulik. An adjustable handle is also important as we're all different heights, he adds.

Locks: You must buy a carry-on with built-in locks or lockable ones. TSA-approved locks can help keep your bag safe on the off chance that you need to check it in at the gate. You can also use your carry-on to hold travel documents instead of using the safe in your hotel room.

Durability: Ballistic nylon is the strongest and most long-lasting durable material, according to Krulik. That said, reinforced polyester is also a great option if you're looking for hard-sided luggage says Krulik. Before you shop, also make sure to look at a brand's testing requirements. Brands will usually test the bag's wheels on uneven surfaces to see how they hold up, and check how strong the outer shell is by subjecting the bags to drop tests.

Style: This depends on personal preference. Maybe you want a monogrammed travel suitcase or a bag that stands out from the rest - maybe in a pastel color? You'll want to think of your bag as an accessory, says Krulik. Keep your personal style in mind when you shop.

Size: Every airplane has different carry-on requirements, that said most domestic airlines require that your carry-on be 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches in size. International airlines are a bit different, while many follow the same domestic rules, some airlines prefer carry-ons only to be under 22 inches tall. Either way, check your chosen airline's baggage size requirements before purchasing any of the below.

Proxis Global Carry-on Spinner

Samsonite is a brand I swear by, having owned their luggage pretty much my entire adult life. The Proxis is one of their newer collections and a great option if you prefer hard-sided luggage. It has dual spinner wheels for maneuverability, an adjustable aluminum handle and a rugged exterior that won't get bumped or bruised during your travels. It also has a USB port, in case you want to charge any devices and a TSA-approved lock for safety. The interior has mesh pockets for additional storage and cross straps to hold your garments. Since this is a smart suitcase, you may have to remove the installed battery during security check, so keep that extra step in mind.

Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Briggs & Riley Essential Expandable Carry-On

Briggs & Riley makes some of my favorite carry-ons and I love them for their lifetime warranty - if you break a zip or see a dent in your suitcase, you can send the suitcase to the brand to have it repaired for free. This particular option is available in three colors and can also be monogrammed, making it easy to identify in a sea of similar-looking luggage. It has a TSA-approved lock and features the brand's flagship expandable and compression technology which allows your suitcase to hold more, without increasing its dimensions. The handle is adjustable too, and there is a carry handle on top, on the bottom and on its sides. There is also a built-in garment folder to make packing easier and zipped pockets on the interior for any essentials.

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 - 11.5 in (includes wheels and handles)

The Carry-On Roller In Text Me Red

This aesthetic carry-on is one of my favorites as it stands out from the other options on this list. It has a durable polycarbonate hard shell build and is available in multiple colors. It has spinner wheels like our other options and also has top and side carry handles. It also has TSA locks and is expandable just in case you need to fit more in. The interior has compression straps to hold your clothes, and also a separate pocket where you can store dirty clothes or undergarments. While it doesn't have an exterior pocket, it does come with an additional small pocket on the interior that is designed to hold any small valuables.

Dimensions: 22.85" x 15.75" x 9.85" (including wheel & handle)

Best water resistant

3 travel trip

Terra 45L Carry-On Luggage

This is the best combination of both soft-side and hard-side luggage. It's made from polyester and polycarbonate. It has 360-degree spinner wheels like the other options and also has multiple exterior pockets for any travel documents or essentials. It has a designated laptop compartment, is expandable and also has a water-resistant exterior - perfect for unpredictable weather. The inside has compression straps and mesh pockets for storage. Plus, the product is made from recycled bottles, making this one of the most sustainable items on this list.

Best budget

3 travel trip

Wrangler Smart Luggage

This budget-friendly carry-on sets itself apart thanks to its convenient cup holder attached to the bag. It also has multidirectional spinner wheels, top and side handles and is expandable, if needed. It even features a phone holder and also has a USB port option for your devices. The interior has one large zipped pocket and a side with compression straps. It's the most basic interior layout compared to the other options, but at its price, it's still one of the best carry-ons you can buy.

Best carry-on duffel bag

3 travel trip

Away The Weekender

Away is another great luggage brand and they make both carry-on suitcases and duffel bags. The Weekender is a great pick for short trips and can hold a 15-inch laptop plus multiple changes of clothes. It has a detachable shoulder strap for comfort and a water-resistant design that's built to last. The interior has mesh pockets and a detachable key clip to help keep your everyday essentials organized. Right now, you can shop it in four colors.

Dimensions: 20.9" x 11.8" x 9.4"

Is hard-side or soft-side luggage better?

Soft-side luggage is less susceptible to getting scratched up, according to Krulik. That said, one isn't really better than the other, it's more a matter of personal preference. Soft-side luggage also has tons of additional front and back pockets for storage, which is not common on hard-side luggage. If you're packing items that are fragile, a hard-side option is better, according to Krulik.

How can I efficiently pack my carry-on?

"One of the things that I think people don't realize is every time you make a fold in your clothes, it's adding bulk to what you're packing," says Krulik. Fold your shirts in half instead of threes, he adds. "Secondly, there's dead space inside those shoes that you're packing." Stuff them with travel shampoo bottles or anything else that fits says Krulik. Finally, if you have an expandable suitcase, make sure you avoid expanding it till the end of your trip. "If I go with a maximum bag that's stuffed to the limits, I have no place to put anything that I might want to buy on the trip."
