Adaptive cruise control supplements conventional cruise control with an active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature. Designed for use on freeways and express ways, in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, your car automatically accelerates or decelerates in order to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you.

To activate the system, press the "ON/OFF" button at the end of the stalk on the lower end of the right side of the steering wheel. The radar-ready indicator will appear in the Multi Information Display.

Accelerate or decelerate to your intended speed, then press the stalk down to set it. If you want to go faster, push the stalk upward and hold until you've reached the desired speed and then release it. Or, if you want to slow down, push the stalk down and hold as you decelerate, then release it once you've reached the desired speed.

To cancel cruise control, tap the brakes, pull the stalk towards you or turn the system off with the ON/OFF button.

Adaptive Cruise Control was designed to maintain the preset distance between your car and the car driving in the same lane directly ahead of you.

When it’s active, it automatically adjusts for changes in the speed of the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance you set.

In the event that you would like to change the preset distance between vehicles, you can do so by using the radar range button located on the lower right side of the steering wheel. Simply press the button repeatedly to cycle through the ranges available. You'll find them displayed on the Multi Information Display. And finally, you can disable the distance holding feature by pushing the cruise control stalk away and holding it until the indicator disappears and the conventional cruise control indicator lights up.

Toyota's 2025 4Runner Is Finally Here: Official Details And Specs Revealed

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter front end

You can be an icon, and still be long overdue for an update — that's the situation the 2025 Toyota 4Runner finds itself facing, as it makes its official debut today. Headed to U.S. dealerships in fall of 2024, the new 4Runner aims to continue its predecessors' reputation for rugged reliability , practical features, and plentiful off-road talent.

At the same time, though, the market has changed since the last iteration of the 4Runner went on sale, all the way back in 2009. Then, it was arguably enough to boast rock-solid build quality and a dependable naturally-aspirated V6; buyers weren't turned off by less-than-refined manners on the road. While the current-gen 4Runner may have proved its dependability credentials, its dated technology was looking increasingly out of place both in Toyota's own range, and in the SUV category generally.

The 2025 4Runner arrives to redeem that reputation. Boasting eye-catching styling — with the familial resemblance to the well-received 2024 Tacoma , 2024 Sequoia , and 2024 Tundra clear, not to mention the same TNGA-F platform underneath — along with modern safety, comfort, and convenience tech, the promise is the same sort of on/off road duality balance we've seen Toyota strike with other recent launches.

Two engines, but no more V6

As seen in the new Tacoma, the standard 4Runner engine will be an i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four, producing 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Optional will be the i-FORCE MAX, a hybrid combining the turbo-four with electrification, and nudging the power numbers up to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque in the process. Each out-performs the old 4Runner's naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter V6, which offered 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque.

Both of the new engines will be hooked up to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission — another marked improvement, compared to the ancient five-speed auto in the outgoing SUV. Despite the power difference, both the non-hybrid and the hybrid engines will be rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

There'll be nine trims in total: The SR5 will be the cheapest; it, like the TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium will come with the turbo-four engine. The 2025 4Runner Limited, TRD Off-Road, and TRD-Off Road Premium will be offered with a choice of both engines. Finally, the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and flagship Platinum spec will all get the hybrid engine as standard.

Bolder styling and real off-road talent

At first glance, Toyota's new SUV is clearly a 4Runner. There's a bold grille, angular styling, and flared wheel arches, with hints of the Tacoma that the new SUV was designed alongside. At the back, the power drop-down rear window is standard.

Underneath, the TNGA-F global truck platform uses a boxed high-strength steel-ladder frame, paired with double wishbone front and multi-link coil rear suspension. The result, Toyota says, is a noticeable uptick in ride quality. That's something drivers of the outgoing 4Runner will probably appreciate.

However, off-road talent hasn't been overlooked. There's an optional stabilizer bar disconnect, and an available Multi-Terrain Monitor system of around-truck cameras for full awareness. Toyota will offer 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD options. The 4Runner 2WD will have an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD); the 4WD versions will get that, plus Active Traction Control, and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range.

2025 4Runner Trailhunter cranks things up to 11

Up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles will be offered, trim-depending. The TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims will get an electronic locking rear differential; the Limited with the hybrid engine will be offered with a full-time 4WD system with center-locking diff. That'll be standard on the Platinum trim.

Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system should make driving the new 4Runner off-road far easier than its predecessor. It offers settings for Mud, Dirt, and Sand, and works in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. A CRAWL Control system — effectively low-speed cruise control for off-roading — is offered, as is Downhill Assist Control.

Certain trims will be more rough and ready than others. Following on in the fashion of the Tacoma Trailhunter , the 2025 4Runner Trailhunter gets ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs, 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires, and a high-mount air intake. It also rides 1.5-2 inches higher than the standard SUV, and gets a 20-inch LED light bar and 2,400W AC inverter.

A major cabin glow-up

Inside, some of the Tacoma and Tundra niceties have been carried over. The new dashboard does away with the old SUV's dreary tech, replaced with an 8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen running Toyota's latest infotainment system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Three USB-C ports are standard, one mounted on the side of the touchscreen; two more in the rear are optional, as is a front wireless charging pad.

Physical controls for the HVAC system remain, along with a traditional gear shifter, while the same drive select switchgear in the Tacoma has been carried across, too. The second row of seats tumble for an uptick in cabin storage, and a third row of seats is optional. Final specs for cargo capacity will be shared closer to the 4Runner's launch.

The driver gets a 7-inch cluster display as standard, or a 14-inch version on higher trims. Keyless entry is standard, with Digital Key on certain trims as well. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 — with pre-collision assistance with pedestrian detection, lane departure alerts with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, Proactive Driving Assist, and auto high beams — is standard on all 2025 4Runner grades . Options include blind spot warnings and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Reliability and pricing are the two big questions left

The two biggest questions remain: price, and reliability. The former will be confirmed closer to the 2025 4Runner's arrival in U.S. dealerships in fall of this year. Given the new high-end trim options, and advanced features made available, it's likely that you'll be able to spend a whole lot more on a new 4Runner than you used to be able to.

Reliability, meanwhile, may take some time to shake out. Toyota is offering a 36 month/36,000 mile basic new vehicle warranty, while the powertrain gets 60,000 mile coverage. Any hybrid-related components are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles — aside from the hybrid battery which is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles. ToyotaCare, covering factory-scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, is also included.

A cynic might say that Toyota couldn't please everyone with the new 4Runner. Long-time fans may well find the new SUV too tech-forward, but the automaker undoubtedly needed to embrace that if it wanted to grab a slice of the new truck audience. How well it succeeded at that balance, we'll find out later this year.

2023 Toyota 4Runner Review: The Last Real Sport Utility Vehicle

The 4Runner remains delightfully old school in so many ways.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

Our Take on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is one of the very last SUVs that still drives like a truck. While most competitors have gone to more modern, sensible unibody platforms, the 4Runner has remained the same since 2009, using a body-on-frame chassis setup now mostly seen only on pickups.

The design gives the 4Runner a unique driving experience that's distinctly old-school and analog. While some may not enjoy the vintage feel of a body-on-frame vehicle, we love the nostalgic rush that comes along with the boat-like body control and slow steering ratio. While we wouldn't call the ride soft, it is impressively sturdy, giving you the impression you could tackle any conceivable terrain without fuss.

That throwback feeling makes its way into the cabin, too, thanks to copious physical buttons and nice, big knobs for things like climate control and volume. This is stuff we took for granted a few years ago. Now, most cars have capacitive buttons or sliders for critical controls.

Not all of the old-school equipment dates the 4Runner in a positive light. The drivetrain feels well behind anything modern and turbocharged, with lackluster acceleration and below-average transmission tuning.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

This generation of Toyota 4Runner has been around since 2009, making one of the oldest vehicles on sale right now. For 2023, Toyota has added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts as standard equipment. The 2023 model year is also the 40th anniversary of the 4Runner in the United States, and Toyota is celebrating with the special edition variant you see here.

The 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition gets tri-color graphics on either side of the car, as well as on the nose. It also gets a set of sweet 17-inch bronze wheels, bronze interior stitching, and a handful of unique badges.

  • Old-school truck-like driving experience is a refreshing feeling in a world of soulless crossovers
  • Excellent, muscular looks match the rugged on-road demeanor
  • Aging interior pairs big knobs and buttons to modern tech like Apple CarPlay
  • Naturally aspirated engine and five-speed auto feel like last-gen equipment
  • Missing tech available on competitors might irk some buyers
  • Won't be on sale forever

Performance, Engine & Horsepower

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is available with just one engine: A 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V-6 making 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. It's paired to a five-speed automatic transmission and, in the case of our 40th anniversary tester, a transfer case with switchable 4WD and a low range setting.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

Weighing in at nearly 5000 pounds, the 4Runner is no lightweight. Zero to 60 mph takes 7.7 seconds, onto a quarter-mile time of 16 seconds flat. Top speed is electronically limited to 113 mph.

Features & Specs

Despite its age, the Toyota 4Runner is packed with useful features. That 4.0-liter V-6 has variable valve timing, allowing a peak of 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. Out back you'll find a tow hitch receiver with seven- and four-pin connectors, meaning you can tow most types of trailers. Towing capacity for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition you see here is 5000 pounds.

Inside you'll find an eight-inch touchscreen as standard, there for navigating through standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It's connected to an eight-speaker stereo system. The truck you see here also gets special 17-inch bronze alloy wheels a handful of nifty tri-color graphics, and copious special badging inside and out.

The 4Runner's aging powertrain and blocky design means it's not very efficient. The EPA rates the 2023 model at 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway, for a combined 17 mpg. That's about what we saw during our 300-mile test, where we drove through a mix of high- and low-speed stop-and-go scenarios.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

The Toyota 4Runner drives far more like a traditional pickup truck than a newer crossover or SUV thanks to its body-on-frame construction. You get the feeling you can drive over anything thanks to the big all-terrain tires and generous suspension travel, but those with more experience with newer crossovers might not like the wallowy chassis and slow steering rack.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is available in six trim levels. The base SR5 variant comes in at $41,050, including destination charges. Above that sits the TRD Sport, starting at $43,910. The TRD Off Road is the next up the totem poll, starting at $44,895. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition you see here is a bit pricer, at $48,365 to start. Above that sits the Limited, at $49,785. At the top of the range is the desirable TRD Pro, starting at $56,015.

The Toyota 4Runner's cabin gives away its age. The dashboard and center console are mostly in big, easy-to-use buttons and knobs rather than touch capacitive sensors and sliders. It's a welcome sight that makes finding and using controls simple and easy, even if you aren't tech savvy (or just have gloves on).

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

Of course, not even the 4Runner can escape the screen revolution. In the middle of the dash sits a big 8-inch infotainment touchscreen for controlling things like radio and navigation. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is a great big SUV, which means plenty of room for occupants and mountains of storage space. There are front skid plates for protecting the underside of the car, as well as full-size spare tire in case you get a flat. To promote airflow through the cabin while the windows are down, the rear window for the hatch can actually go down via a power-operated switch in the center console.

Inside you'll find a push-button start, power and heated front seats, and an eight-speaker sound system.

While the Toyota 4Runner doesn't sport the latest technological advancements in the car world, it does have some useful tech features. There's an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system mounted inside the dash for controlling the stereo and projecting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also push-button start, heated front seats, an eight-speaker sound system, and a host of safety features, including pre-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and more.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is a big vehicle, which means there's a lot of space inside. Behind the rear seats is a gigantic 46 cubic feet of storage space. That means you can fill all five seats and still have more than enough space for everyone's luggage on a week-long trip.

Just because the Toyota 4Runner is an old vehicle doesn't mean Toyota hasn't kept it updated with the latest safety tech. There's adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, a pre-collision detection system with pedestrian detection, automated emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and blind spot monitoring.

The 4Runner received a four-star rating from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration , with four stars in frontal crash scenarios, five stars in side-impact scenarios, and three stars in NHTSA's rollover probability rating. For ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, click here .

The Toyota 4Runner has no fewer than six trims to choose from. The base SR5 model gets a 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6 paired to a five-speed auto, sending power to the rear wheels. You'll have to upgrade to the TRD Sport to get 4WD, but you also get things like a power-adjustable driver's seat, specific interior trim, skid plates, 20-inch wheels, and a hood scoop. Jump up to the TRD Off-Road and you get a locking rear differential and a handful of cosmetic TRD-branded upgrades.

2023 toyota 4runner 40th anniversary special edition

The 40th Anniversary Edition gets a bunch of specific exterior graphics, a set of lovely 17-inch bronze wheels, bronze interior stitching, and a collection of badges. Go for the Limited model, and you get dual-zone climate control, 360-degree parking cameras, Toyota's X-REAS adaptive suspension, and a ton of chrome trim.

The coolest and most expensive trim of all is the TRD Pro. It gets specific branded skid plates, unique Fox suspension, and 17-inch matte black wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires for ultimate off-road prowess. Things like 4WD and the rear locking differential come standard, as do a black grille and a roof basket.

Wrapping Up

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is for those who want to break out of the norm of the SUV segment and feel something more when they get behind the wheel. The truck's rugged demeanor, cool looks, throwback cabin, and ample space means it can do so many things for so many people. And because it's a Toyota, it'll last forever.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Welcomes the Open Trail

Toyota gives its rugged 4Runner SUV some overlanding off-road appeal with the Venture special edition's roof-mounted cargo basket.

2020 toyota toyota 4runner venture

Some SUVs just look better when they're dirty. Not I-parked-it-outside-in-the-rain-last-night dirty. We mean really dirty, with mud splattered over a caked-on layer of trail dust. The special-edition 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture is one of those SUVs.

2020 toyota toyota 4runner venture

Ready for Adventure

Based on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium model, the new Venture edition brings the 4Runner's trim level count to eight. It's basically an appearance package, featuring the same 17-inch wheels as the 4Runner TRD Pro, as well as black badges, mirror caps, door handles, and a rear spoiler. The Venture's real draw is the standard Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket on its roof, which adds considerable functionality and cargo versatility. Inside, Toyota adds all-weather floor mats and a standard rear cargo mat.

All 2020 4Runners get a revised interior with a redesigned instrument cluster, two USB ports, a larger 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen (up from the previous 6.1-incher), and compatibility with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. Toyota's TSS-P active-safety suite is now standard across the lineup and adds automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Like the Wrangler, the 4Runner's hardware is old-school SUV stuff. Mostly steel body panels mount to a separate ladder-type frame with a live rear axle. Its underpinnings, including a control-arm front suspension, are similar to those of the Tacoma compact pickup . But the Tacoma's rear leaf springs are replaced with coils in the SUV for a smoother ride and increased suspension articulation. Most of the 4Runner's bits are also shared with the Lexus GX460 , which shares the Toyota's 109.8-inch wheelbase.

2020 toyota toyota 4runner venture

Most 4Runner models use a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed low-range transfer case (the Limited and Nightshade get a full-time system with a locking center differential). The Venture also adds a standard locking rear differential, Toyota's Crawl Control (essentially low-speed off-road cruise control), and the Multi-Terrain Select system, which allows the driver to adjust the drivetrain for different surfaces, including dirt, mud, sand, and rocks. Our test car also came equipped with the optional $1750 Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system, which features hydraulically controlled, two-piece anti-roll bars that can disconnect to further increase suspension articulation off-road and stiffen to minimize body roll on pavement.

Like the TRD Off-Road Premium, the Venture rides on Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires, sized 265/70R-17. They don't look very aggressive, but they do provide a surprising amount of traction in dry off-road conditions. Out in the wild of Jawbone Canyon, a popular backcountry destination in California's Mojave desert, the Venture easily climbed steep hills and its 9.6-inches of ground clearance proved to be plenty. However, due to its long rear overhang that affords a modest 26.0-degree departure angle, its back end did scrape the ground more than once.

2020 toyota toyota 4runner venture

Softly sprung, the 4Runner's suspension soaks up all sorts of terrain well and feels relatively plush around town. Undulating washboard surfaces can send some quivers through its structure , but the Venture comfortably bombed though sandy washes at 40 mph without bottoming out.

A Rugged Core

Under its scooped hood, every 4Runner is powered by Toyota's 4.0-liter V-6 that makes a decent 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. But the naturally aspirated V-6's torque peak doesn't hit until 4400 rpm, and there isn't much grunt to be found below 3000 rpm. What really makes the 4Runner feel ancient is its five-speed automatic transmission, which always seems to be in too high of a gear and requires a heavy application of throttle to initiate a kickdown. Despite the Venture's strong 3.73:1 axle ratios, maintaining 80 mph on mild highway grades usually requires manually selecting fourth gear via the gated shift lever. The aging Lexus GX may have its own vintage qualities, but driving the 4Runner makes us yearn for the additional torque of the Lexus's 4.7-liter V-8 and the sharper response of its six-speed automatic.

Based on our test of a 2019 TRD Off-Road Premium model , the Venture should hit 60 mph in a reasonable 7.6 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds at 88 mph. However, we'd prefer a bit more range in a vehicle designed for overland exploration. Although the 4Runner's fuel tank is large at 23.0 gallons, we averaged just 14 mpg in the Venture and struggled to milk 300 highway miles from a full tank. The Yakima roof rack—which measures 52.0 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 6.5 inches tall—surely doesn't help the 4Runner's aerodynamics on the highway. But at least you could strap a few jerry cans to it for longer treks into the wilderness. Back in Michigan, the 2019 TRD Off-Road version averaged 22 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, which is 2 mpg better than its EPA estimate and good for about 500 miles of range.

2020 toyota toyota 4runner venture

Making a Choice

Despite its dated package, the 4Runner's continued popularity is easy to understand. It is family friendly, ruggedly handsome, and highly capable. A Wrangler Unlimited is better at navigating tight trails, but the larger 4Runner is more spacious and far better behaved on the open road. We expected the roof basket to significantly increase wind noise at higher speeds, but it doesn't. While the Toyota's driver's seat still feels good after eight hours in the saddle, its optional TRD Pro exhaust system drones on the highway and doesn't enrich the V-6's voice. Save your $799. The optional $345 running boards also aren't necessary, as they're most effective at dirtying the legs of your pants.

At $45,405, the 4Runner Venture isn't excessively expensive when you consider a well-equipped Wrangler Unlimited can top $60K, but its value is questionable. We appreciate its breadth of features and capability, yet it delivers the same interior amenities, driving experience, and off-road capability as the TRD Off-Road Premium model, which costs $1815 less. Frugal buyers can bolt on a MegaWarrior cargo basket themselves for $449.

You can also get the Venture's off-road hardware on the TRD Off-Road model and save about $4000. Conversely, we'd rather spend $1258 more than our example's $49,727 as-tested price for the full TRD Pro model, which remains the most off-road capable 4Runner you can buy. Whichever version you choose, just make sure to get it dirty.

Unleash the Ultimate Driving Experience: Exploring the Capabilities of 4Runner Cruise Control

Unleash the Ultimate Driving Experience: Exploring the Capabilities of 4Runner Cruise Control

The 4Runner Cruise Control is a feature in Toyota’s 4Runner SUV that allows the driver to maintain a constant speed without needing to continuously press the accelerator pedal. It is a convenient tool for long drives and helps improve fuel efficiency.

How Does the 4Runner Cruise Control System Work?

Is cruise control available in the 4runner, what are the benefits of using cruise control in a 4runner, can i adjust the cruise control speed in a 4runner, are there any safety features associated with the 4runner cruise control system, can i use cruise control in off-roading conditions with a 4runner, how does the 4runner cruise control system differ from other toyota models, can i install an aftermarket cruise control system in a 4runner, what are some common troubleshooting tips for the 4runner cruise control system, how to properly maintain and care for the 4runner cruise control system.

The 4Runner cruise control system works by allowing the driver to set a desired speed for the vehicle to maintain. Once the cruise control is activated, the system uses sensors to monitor the vehicle’s speed and makes necessary adjustments to the throttle and braking systems to keep the vehicle at the set speed. The cruise control system can be manually turned on and off, and the desired speed can be increased or decreased using buttons or switches located on the steering wheel or dashboard. The system can also be overridden by applying the brakes or pressing the accelerator pedal.

Yes, cruise control is available in the 4Runner.

Using cruise control in a 4Runner has several benefits.

Firstly, it provides convenience and reduces driver fatigue on long trips. By setting a desired speed, the driver can relax and let the vehicle maintain a steady pace, eliminating the need to continuously press on the accelerator.

Secondly, cruise control promotes fuel efficiency. It helps maintain a consistent speed, which can result in better fuel economy compared to constantly fluctuating speeds. This is particularly useful on highways where maintaining a steady speed is key to fuel savings.

Additionally, using cruise control can help prevent speeding. By setting a speed limit, the driver can avoid accidentally exceeding the legal speed limit, ensuring a safer driving experience.

Lastly, cruise control can also enhance vehicle control. It helps stabilize the vehicle by maintaining a consistent speed, especially on slippery or uneven road surfaces. This can contribute to overall driving comfort and safety.

Overall, the benefits of using cruise control in a 4Runner include convenience, reduced fatigue, improved fuel efficiency, prevention of speeding, and enhanced vehicle control.

Yes, you can adjust the cruise control speed in a 4Runner.

Yes, the 4Runner Cruise Control System is equipped with safety features. Some of these features include:

1. Adaptive Cruise Control: The 4Runner offers an adaptive cruise control system that can automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe following distance from the car ahead. This feature helps prevent potential collisions and enhances overall safety.

2. Collision Warning System: The 4Runner may also come equipped with a collision warning system that uses sensors to detect objects or vehicles in front of the vehicle. It can provide warnings to the driver and automatically initiate braking if a potential collision is detected, helping to mitigate or avoid accidents.

3. Lane Departure Warning: Some 4Runner models include a lane departure warning system that alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings if the vehicle starts to drift out of its lane. This feature can help prevent accidents caused by unintentional lane departures.

4. Emergency Brake Assist: In critical situations where the driver initiates an emergency stop, the 4Runner’s cruise control system may feature emergency brake assist. By increasing brake pressure during sudden braking, this feature helps reduce the stopping distance and enhances safety.

5. Brake Override System: Another safety feature associated with the 4Runner cruise control system is a brake override system. If both the accelerator and brake pedals are pressed simultaneously, the system gives priority to the brake pedal, ensuring that the vehicle comes to a stop quickly and safely.

It is important to note that the availability of specific safety features may vary depending on the trim level and model year of the 4Runner. It is recommended to consult the vehicle’s owner’s manual or contact a Toyota dealership for the most accurate and up-to-date information on the specific safety features of a particular 4Runner model.

No, it is not recommended to use cruise control in off-roading conditions with a 4Runner. Off-roading requires constant driver input and control to navigate rough terrain, obstacles, and changes in traction. Cruise control may not be able to respond quickly enough to these conditions, posing a safety risk. It is best to manually control the vehicle’s speed and maintain full control while off-roading.

The 4Runner cruise control system differs from other Toyota models in a few ways. Firstly, the 4Runner has a more robust and advanced cruise control system compared to some other Toyota models. It includes features like adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. This feature is not available in all Toyota models.

Furthermore, the 4Runner also has a unique crawl control feature which enhances the off-road capability of the vehicle. This feature allows the driver to maintain a low, controlled speed while traversing difficult terrain, making it stand out from other Toyota models’ cruise control systems.

Overall, the 4Runner’s cruise control system is more advanced and tailored towards off-road and adventurous driving experiences compared to other Toyota models.

Yes, it is possible to install an aftermarket cruise control system in a 4Runner. However, it is important to note that the process may vary depending on the specific model and year of the vehicle. It is recommended to consult with an experienced automotive technician or refer to the vehicle’s manual for detailed instructions on installing an aftermarket cruise control system.

Here are some common troubleshooting tips for the 4Runner cruise control system:

1. Check the fuse: If the cruise control is not working at all, the first thing to check is the fuse. A blown fuse could be the cause of the problem.

2. Check the brake lights: The cruise control system is designed to disengage when the brake pedal is pressed. If the brake lights are not working, it can prevent the cruise control from engaging. Check and replace any faulty brake light bulbs.

3. Check the speed sensors: The cruise control system relies on speed sensors to maintain a steady speed. If the speed sensors are malfunctioning, it can cause the cruise control to engage or disengage sporadically. Inspect and clean the speed sensors, and replace them if necessary.

4. Check the throttle linkage: The throttle linkage connects the cruise control system to the throttle body. If the linkage is misaligned, loose, or damaged, it can interfere with the cruise control operation. Ensure that the throttle linkage is properly adjusted and in good condition.

5. Check for vacuum leaks: The cruise control system in some 4Runner models operates on vacuum pressure. Any vacuum leaks in the system can cause the cruise control to not function properly or disengage unexpectedly. Inspect the vacuum lines and connections, and repair or replace any damaged or leaking components.

6. Perform a system reset: Sometimes, a simple system reset can resolve cruise control issues. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes, and then reconnect it. This can reset the control module and potentially fix any software glitches.

7. Consult a professional: If the troubleshooting steps mentioned above do not resolve the issue, it is advisable to consult a professional mechanic or the dealership for further diagnosis and repair. They have the expertise and specialized equipment to accurately diagnose and fix cruise control system problems.

Properly maintaining and caring for the 4Runner cruise control system involves following a few important steps:

1. Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the cruise control system for any signs of damage or wear. Check the wiring, connectors, and hoses for any signs of fraying or disconnection.

2. Keep it Clean: Regularly clean the cruise control buttons and switches with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth. This will help prevent any dirt or grime from interfering with their functionality.

3. Test the System: Test the cruise control system regularly to ensure all functions are working properly. Verify that the cruise control engages and disengages smoothly and that the speed control responds accurately.

4. Check the Brake System: The cruise control system is designed to automatically disengage when the brake pedal is pressed. Ensure that the brake system is in good working condition and that the brake lights properly illuminate when the pedal is depressed.

5. Maintain the Vehicle’s Engine: A properly maintained engine is crucial for the cruise control system to function optimally. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for routine engine tune-ups, oil changes, and air filter replacements.

6. Address Any Issues Promptly: If you notice any issues or malfunctions with the cruise control system, address them promptly. Ignoring or postponing repairs can lead to further damage and potentially compromise your safety on the road.

7. Consult the Owner’s Manual: Always refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions and details on maintaining and caring for the 4Runner cruise control system. The manual will provide comprehensive guidelines and troubleshooting steps tailored to your vehicle model.

By following these maintenance and care tips, you can ensure that your 4Runner cruise control system operates reliably and safely for many miles to come.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter

The 4Runner has been a staple of the Toyota lineup for more than four decades and the new 2025 model completes the brand’s complete revamp of its body-on-frame lineup. Starting with the Tundra full-size pickup in 2022, Toyota has leveraged its TNGA-F architecture to launch redesigned versions of the Sequoia, Tacoma, Land Cruiser and Lexus GX and LX. The sixth-generation 2025 4Runner rounds out the family at least for North America.

2025 Toyota 4Runner

The original 4Runner debuted in 1983 based off the HiLux pickup. Like most pickup-derived SUVs of the time it featured a removable rear top section allowing it to be used like a half-open pickup with no rear wall and an extra row of seats. That architecture disappeared with the second-generation and starting with the third-generation 4Runner, it began sharing its platform with the Land Cruiser Prado. That relationship continues to this day and expands to all of Toyota’s body-on-frame models. The latest Land Cruiser and Lexus GX are effectively the Prado that is sold in other markets.

2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

Despite having debuted way back in 2009, the current fifth-generation 4Runner remains a surprisingly strong seller. Over the years most of the mainstream branded, midsize, off-road oriented two-row SUVs have fallen by the wayside such as the Nissan XTerra and Chevy S-10 Blazer, leaving the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco as the main competition to the 4Runner.

Why you should stop sending texts from your imessage app, wwe raw results winners surprises and grades after wrestlemania 40.

Other nameplates like the Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer have grown into larger three-row vehicles more targeted at on-road commuting. Even the 4Runner now offers a third-row option and continues to do so on the new model. Thus 4Runner sales have remained relatively strong despite the advanced age of the outgoing model.

2025 Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma

Like prior 4Runners, the new model also shares a lot with the latest Tacoma midsize pickup including the powertrains. Toyota’s increasingly ubiquitous 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be under the hood of all sixth-generation 4Runners. The standard i-Force version delivers 278-hp and lb-ft of torque. The hybrid i-Force Max adds an electric motor and 1.87-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery for a total of 326-hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Towing capability grows from 5,000-lbs to 6,000-lbs.

Both options come with the same eight-speed automatic transmission found in the Tacoma and Land Cruiser. As before, customers can choose a rear-wheel-drive, part-time four-wheel-drive or full-time four-wheel-drive system. Both 4WD systems have a two-speed transfer case and Toyota’s active traction control system to aid in sending torque to the wheels with the most grip. All variants get an automatic limited slip differential.

The TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and the new Trailhunter version also get an electronic locking rear differential. The Platinum trim also gets a locking center differential that is optional on the Limited. New to the 4Runner is a front stabilizer bar disconnect that allows for improved articulation of the front wheels over rough terrain.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited

The wheelbase of the new model has grown by 2.4-inches and overall length has grown by 4.7-inches compared to the old model. The longer overhangs mean the approach and departure angles are slightly degraded for the new 4Runner at 32 and 24 degrees respectively compared to 33 and 26 degrees for the four-wheel-drive fifth-gen, However, the nearly 20-inch shorter wheelbase compared to the Tacoma should give the 4Runner a much better breakover angle giving it an advantage off-road.

Like Toyota’s other off-roaders and most competitors launched in recent years, the 4Runner gets a Multi-Terrain Select system that allows the driver to choose modes that are optimized for the type of surfaces being driven on. The modes which include Mud, Dirt and Sand adjust parameters like the slip thresholds for traction control and work in both 4WD-high and low ranges. The Crawl control manages speed on rough surfaces so the driver can focus on steering around obstacles on the trail.

The design shares a strong family resemblance to the new Tacoma but also has callbacks to early generations. The rear top may not be removable anymore, but the rear quarter windows do wrap into the roof again. The tailgate glass can also be lowered into the gate as has been the case in prior generations allowing for longer objects like surfboards to hang out the back.

The interior also shares a lot with the new Tacoma including the choice of a standard 8-inch infotainment screen or the optional 14-inch display. Both use Toyota’s latest infotainment software which is much improved from prior generations. Wireless support is included for both Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a Qi wireless charging pad is also available in addition to the standard USB-C ports. Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 driver assist package comes standard as it does on all other newly designed models. This includes blindspot monitoring, radar adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, road sign recognition, and proactive driving assist.

In addition to all of the usual trims found on Toyota trucks and SUVs, the 4Runner also offers the new Trailhunter trim. The Trailhunter includes ARB's Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with remote reservoirs on the rear axle and a custom ARB roof rack. 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires provide the grip along with two-inches of added front ground clearance and 1.5-inches in the rear.

Rock rails and high strength steel skid plates come standard on the Trailhunter along with a bronze grille and integrated 20-inch LED light bar. Toyota has also built in a 2400W inverter to power gear during overlanding adventures.

The 2025 4Runner goes on sale in fall 2024.

2020+ 5th Gen 4Runner TSS and Bumper Compatibility: Everything You Need To Know

2020+ 5th Gen 4Runner TSS & Bumper Compatibility: Everything You Need To Know

Do you have your eye set on a new bumper for a 2020+ 4Runner?

For those interested in adding in a new bumper for a 2020 4Runner know there are some new challenges with this model year. Specifically, the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) sensor in the front bumper has to be compatible with the new bumper. If you want to find out other differences with the 2020 4Runner check out Top 5 Differences in the 2020 4Runner .

As of now, I could not find an option that allows the replacement of the whole bumper and relocates the TSS sensor. C4 Fabrication has uploaded a YouTube video showing a sneak peek of a relocation kit of the TSS, but there is no mention of a release date.

Updated: C4 Fabrication TSS Relocation Kit Review

Please note: If this sensor is moved, then a certified Toyota technician would need to help recalibrate this device.

What is the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)?

The Toyota Safety Sense is a new system developed to make our driving experience safer. The features of this safety system include pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with sway warning, automatic high beams, and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC or known as adaptive cruise control). For this article, the part of the safety system we are focused on is the radar on the front bumper. This radar is crucial to help with pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control.

TSS Compatible Bumpers?

Thankfully, there are two main bumper options avliable that are compatible with TSS; low profile and hidden winch mounts. Companies offer these styles for 2020+ 4Runners who are looking for the functionality of an aftermarket bumper yet looking to retain TSS, however currently no company offers a full width bumper.

Hopefully, companies will start to develop a compatible full bumper replacement compatible with TSS soon.

If you want to see bumper options out there for 2010 – 2024 4Runners, then you’ll want to check out the 4Runner Front Bumper Options .

We will update the post if and when companies start to release TSS relocation kit or compatible bumpers.

Low Profile Bumpers

2020+ 4Runner TSS and Bumper Compatibility - Everything you need to know

As many have likely seen, low profile bumpers require cutting the front valence out and using most of the stock bumper. The benefits can include recovery points, a light bar, bull bar, winch, and a change in the aesthetics. For this article, we won’t go into all the details about these bumpers. However, I will highlight the choices you have compatible with the 2020 4runner TSS.

Below is a list of compatible bumpers for 2020 4Runner that I have found when researching options for myself. The list below does not include every option available, and the order does not indicate one bumper better than another. Also, the bumpers do not include options for the Limited models.

Looking for a hidden approach to your winch?

Max has written a great article, Hidden Winch Mount Options , about everything you must know about this mounting solution. Two major benefits one will find with this option is the ability to add a winch and some offer recovery points.

In addition to the list provided by Max, these are two other options that are now available:

  • LFD Off Road Adjustable Hidden Winch Mount: Check Price

Additional Steps for Removing the Bumper

2020+ 4Runner TSS and Bumper Compatibility - Everything you need to know

So you have found that sweet new bumper and can’t wait to get it installed?

Well, with those lead times you’ll probably be reading up on how to install your new bumper. Brenan has written an excellent step-by-step article on how to remove the bumper in the C4 Fab Front Bumper Install .

However, with the 2020 models, two additional bolts must account for before fully removing the bumper. These are two 10mm bolts and differ from the other bolt shown at the top of the image.

Try to avoid mixing these up as they are both 10mm bolts and look similar. The difference is the washer on the bolts.

Installing/Removing Low Profile Bumper with Tall Bull Bar

2020+ 4Runner TSS and Bumper Compatibility - Everything you need to know

As a side note, the bracket attached by the two bolts can be a challenge when installing/removing the factory bumper back on the vehicle with a low profile bumper that has the tall bull bar.

The reason is the bull bar potentially doesn’t give much space between the front of the vehicle for the bumper to fit. The bracket then becomes an issue because it sticks out so the bracket has to fit over the black horizontal bar you see right above it.

One could remove the TSS bracket but I didn’t want to risk the TSS moving and needing to recalibrate the TSS after removing and reinstalling.

Remember to disconnect the cable to TSS before removing the bumper…

Also, the cable connecting to the TSS must be disconnected before you can remove the entire bumper. While not required, I found first removing the connector from the bracket makes disconnecting the cables easier.  Once those bolts are off and the cable is unplugged you are set to trim the factory bumper and get your sweet new bumper installed!

Final Thoughts

The TSS is a great safety feature and one where a hidden or a low profile bumper is going to be your best option to add a winch, light bar, and additional recovery points. Since a full bumper replacement is out of the question, you may consider a high clearance cut to compliment the low profile bumper.

For now, we will have to wait on those full bumper swaps until companies can integrate the TSS.

Hello from Portland, OR! When I am not geeking out with technology, you'll find a sociable individual who loves cooking, exploring the outdoors, and of course my 4Runner.

guest

Do any companies off a bumper for the LIMITED models with parking sensors in the lower bumper?

Chris

Hi, I have a 2022 TRD Premium with the TSS and front camera. I under the full bar height won’t impact the TSS but does it sit high enough to not interfere with the camera. Can’t tell from the pics. Thanks

Jay

Are there any bull bars that any recommends that would not affect the TSS?

Slate

Lil B’s fabrication makes a full width TSS compatible bumper.

Sean

I literally just installed my C4 Fab lopro bumper last week on my 2020 TRD PRO. What a coincidence that this article just came out in regard to the TSS system. I actually had to trim a little sheet metal off the bracket itself by the lower portion of the bumper to accommodate the winch control box. The TSS seems to work fine since I have installed the bumper and I’m very happy with it.

Jeff

Did you get the low bar or the taller bar?

Sean Migone

I got the full height bar, the one that says that it will not interfere with TSS .

Richard Jackson

Toyota recommends permanent disablement of the radar sensor on any vehicle with an altered ride height. So this makes relocation moot, because most customers who are replacing a front bumper will also be changing the ride height through suspension and or wheel and tire modifications. Resetting the calibration is not considered a permanent solution and renders the programmed geometry of the sensors unreliable for their intended purpose.

Franklin

This is simply a liability concern, and primarily not a ride height issue at the majority of aftermarket changes.

As you can probably infer, ride height, even in an unaltered vehicle, can change fairly dramatically. This depends on load, and where that load is located. The gross vehicle weight rating is a lot more than the stock weight, and you can lose a couple of inches of height by being fully loaded down. Don’t forget about towing, which can also alter the height of the ride, especially in a configuration of heavy trailer and minimal front-located load (think light driver, no passengers). The system is meant to work within these parameters, and will work with the relatively mild adjustments most owners make. You’re not seeing these trucks put on 12″ lifts and 40″ tires (I believe there is one out there roughly like this).

As an example of one of the systems, TSS is not a system that uses one infinitely small point (i.e. laser) to detect range to an object ahead. Such a system would be ineffective, as objects on the road don’t have a perfectly vertical object plane. Rather, the system uses a broad detection area, which a lift of two or three inches won’t affect much, if at all. Consider the back plane of a vehicle. Let’s say the cone of detection normally is split halfway between the leading vehicle’s boot and it’s angled windshield. Moving that broad cone upwards a degree and a half isn’t going to change the average distance-to-object by any significant amount (calculation based on combination of total ride height change as well as rear-to-front angle increase of typical rake reduction with most lifts).

Overall, regardless of these changes, the best safety policy overall is to simply pay more attention when driving. This may be a controversial statement, but I think speeding slightly is safer than driving slower, as the slow speed can lure you into a false sense of safety, and, therefore inattention, whereas speeding increases your focus, attention, and response time. At least that has been my experience, but I consider driving to be something that you should always be working at improving. Keep in mind, there’s a difference between speeding a bit faster than others or the speed limit, and going 55 in a residential area, or 125 on the freeway.

Sjlenssen

Agreed. Ride height does not affect function. Toyota has a liability concern and will make the official statement to disconnect permanently but this not necessary with typical lift between 1-3 inches(likely much higher as well). Had personal experience following a hit and run requiring bumper replacement and repair after initial lift of 2.5 front. No concern and direct quote technician at next service was “the dash will light up like a Christmas tree if the system recognizes a geometry that is incompatible” as it is always making calculations while the vehicle is running.

Say goodbye to the tried and true 4.0-liter V-6. Every 2025 4Runner will be powered by a turbo-4 powertrain, but some will be hybrids.

Most models will be powered by a 2.4-liter turbo-4 rated at 278 hp and 317 hp lb-ft of torque. But TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models will come standard with a hybrid version of this engine that mates an electric motor to the transmission for a combined output of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can option the hybrid engine on TRD Off-Road and Limited models. Every 4Runner will feature an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota 4Runner aims off-road

The 4Runner has been modernized, but seemingly not at the expense of off-road capability.

The ninth-generation 4Runner remains a body-on-frame SUV, but it now rides on a modern frame. The TNGA-F platform the 4Runner now rides on is shared with the Lexus GX , Toyota Land Cruiser and Sequoia SUVs along with the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks . The new powertrains with their improved performance will enable up to a 6,000-pound tow rating.

Like before, rear-wheel drive will be standard while part-time or full-time four-wheel drive will be available. Moving into this century, the 4Runner’s four-wheel-drive system is electronically engaged with a switch. Most 4Runners feature a limited-slip rear differential, but TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter models gain a rear locking differential. Confusingly, only the high-zoot Platinum models get full-time four-wheel drive with a locking center differential, which is all optional on Limited models.

The 4Runner retains its independent front suspension and coil rear springs paired with a solid rear axle. TRD Pro models use 2.5-inch diameter Fox shocks with remote reservoirs to battle heat dissipation.

The new Trailhunter model rides on ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with external piggyback remote reservoirs. A full set of skid plates underneath the Trailhunter covers everything from the front bumper back to behind the transfer case should the bottom of the 4Runner make contact with the earth. The shocks paired with 33-inch Toyo Open Country All Terrain tires give the Trailhunter a 2.0-inch lift over standard 4Runners.

With up to 9.2 inches of ground clearance, 32-degree approach, and 24-degree departure angle, the latest 4Runner is a mixed bag. The current 4Runner had up to 9.6 inches of ground clearance, 33-degree approach, and 26-degree departure angle. But the current 4Runner rides on a shorter 109.8-inch wheelbase compared to the new 4Runner’s 112.2-inch wheelbase, which should pay large dividends in terms of ride quality. A new available electronic disconnecting sway bar should help maximize wheel articulation.

2025 Toyota 4Runner reveal

4Runner looks evolutionary

A quick look at the 4Runner and it’s obvious what this SUV is. While it retains the iconic look with punched-out flares, a tall greenhouse, and blunt front and rear ends, the front end takes on the look of the Tacoma. The headlights and grille shape are similar, and the hilariously large chin spoiler on the non off-road models can be removed with nine bolts, but it will affect fuel economy by 1 or 2 mpg. The rear windows wrap over the roofline in a nod to the first-gen 4Runner and the rear tailgate glass electronically drops down into the tailgate to haul longer items.

Both Trailhunter and TRD Pro models feature Rigid LED fog lights integrated into the front ends along with an LED light bar mounted in the center of the grille, which the latter puts out 10,000 lumens (notably about double the output of the light bars on the larger Tundra and Sequoia).

Inside, the dashboard is almost identical to the Tacoma pickup truck with either an 8.0- or 14.0-inch touchscreen perched front and center. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard. A 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster will be standard while higher trims will upgrade to a 12.3-inch display. Lower trim models feature acres of hard plastic while upper trim models cover the hard plastic with soft-touch bits and leather. Hybrid models will make loading cargo into the rear end more of a task thanks to a higher liftover height due to the battery pack. The rear seat back manually reclines for long road trips, and Platinum models feature heated rear seats. A head-up display will be available. Trailhunter models feature a 2,400-watt inverter for power during off-road adventures.

2025 Toyota 4Runner reveal

4Runner features safety as standard

Every 2025 4Runner will come standard with modern safety tech including automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitors will be available.

2024 4RUNNER

Crawl Control

When the trail gets challenging, 4Runner’s available Crawl Control (CRAWL) is here to help you conquer your off-road adventure. This advanced system automatically modulates the throttle and brakes on five low-speed settings so you can keep your focus on navigating across difficult terrain.

Electronic Locking Rear Differential

To help you negotiate uncertain terrain, 4Runner’s available electronically controlled locking rear differential distributes engine power evenly to both rear wheels, so they move at the same speed, even if one is off the ground. It is designed to help you maintain a controlled pace over obstacles.

Multi-Terrain Monitor

Like an extra set of eyes on what’s around you, 4Runner’s available Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) helps you navigate nature’s obstacles with confidence. By using cameras placed around the SUV, you can get a better view of your surroundings on the 8-in. touchscreen display.

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)

The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) helps 4Runner make molehills out of mountains. When taking on extreme off-road terrain, this system is designed to automatically decouple 4Runner’s sway bars as needed, helping improve wheel articulation. And when the terrain goes back to smooth and flat, the sway bars are designed to automatically reconnect.

Multi-Terrain Select

When you’re in the thick of it, you can activate 4Runner’s available Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system for optimized traction. Just choose from four terrain modes and this system helps regulate wheelspin by automatically adjusting the engine throttle and traction control.

Power Rear Glass

4Runner features a power rear window, a signature element found across all generations of 4Runner. And best of all, it’s standard. This rear glass raises and lowers with the push of a button, making it easier to grab your gear from the cargo area.

Fold-Flat Second-Row Seating

With 4Runner’s 40/20/40 fold-flat second-row seats, you can make room for everything you need by folding one or all three seats down to accommodate up to 88.8 cubic feet of cargo.

Third-Row Seating

If you’re all about the entourage, you'll be able to accommodate up to seven with the available third-row seating on SR5 and Limited grades. The seats also have a 50/50 split capability to make room for cargo.

120V AC Power Outlet

A 120V AC power outlet is conveniently located in the cargo area so you can power your gear—like your phone or an air compressor—when you’re off the grid.

Performance

270-hp 4.0-liter v6 engine.

4Runner’s legendary reliability continues with power from its 4.0-liter V6 engine. With up to 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, you have all that you need to take you from adventure to adventure.

Standard on 4Runner Limited, full-time 4WD helps provide you with optimal traction for every drive. All you have to do is focus on the path ahead when the terrain gets rugged or when the road conditions become challenging, and full-time 4WD automatically sends power to the wheel that needs it most.

Part-Time 4WD

Giving you more control of your 4Runner’s capabilities is an available four-wheel drive 4-wheel-drive system that provides high- and low-range options. Select High 2 (H2) for daily driving and for the best fuel efficiency, High 4 (H4) for more traction under 55 mph, and Low 4 (L4) when you need to drive slowly or help in trekking over difficult terrain.

5000-Lb. Max Towing Capacity

With 4Runner’s ability to tow up to 5000 lbs., venturing into some of nature’s toughest ranges doesn’t mean you have to leave everything behind. 4Runner adheres to SAE J2807, the standard for tow ratings set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

2020 Toyota 4Runner Overview

Is the 2020 toyota 4runner a good used suv.

Despite its low ranking, yes, the 2020 4Runner is a good used SUV. It has a large cargo hold and an easy-to-use infotainment system. In its standard setup, this vehicle has two roomy rows of seats, though space is tight in the optional third row. This Toyota’s true strength lies in its off-road capability. On-road, however, you'll find a harsh ride and uneven handling. Additionally, the 4Runner trails other midsize SUVs when it comes to fuel economy, interior refinement, and safety scores, and it has high projected ownership costs to boot.

Which Used Toyota 4Runner Trim Is Right for Me?

Toyota made the 2020 4Runner in seven trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Nightshade Edition, and TRD Pro. A V6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission are standard throughout.

The base SR5 trim is well equipped with tech and safety features, and the Premium adds several comfort features. Off-road-oriented shoppers should consider one of the TRD trims.

  • Toyota 4Runner SR5: Standard equipment in the SR5 includes an 8-inch touch screen, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, three USB ports, Bluetooth, an eight-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, alloy wheels, a rearview camera, and Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), which bundles a pre-collision warning and braking system, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.
  • Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium: The SR5 Premium adds proximity keyless entry, SofTex synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable front-passenger seat, and a built-in navigation system.
  • Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road: The TRD Off-Road gains off-roading gear such as crawl control, multiterrain select, four-wheel drive, and a locking rear differential. Otherwise, it has the same features as the SR5.
  • Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium: The TRD Off-Road Premium combines the off-road equipment of the TRD Off-Road with the SR5 Premium’s features. It has a moonroof too.
  • Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro: The TRD Pro is the most adept off-roader in the lineup. It comes with Fox front and rear shocks, TRD-tuned springs, a roof rack, TRD-specific styling, and a skid plate. It also has a premium JBL stereo with 15 speakers.
  • Toyota 4Runner Limited: Limited models come with the JBL stereo, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, ventilated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a retuned suspension. When the vehicle was new, it was available with full-time four-wheel drive.
  • Toyota 4Runner Nightshade Edition: The top-of-the-line Nightshade Edition is similarly equipped as the Limited, but it has distinctive black styling.

What Does Toyota's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Toyota offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 85,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. Toyota provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty on all its certified pre-owned vehicles, and it extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the initial sale date or 100,000 miles. For 2020 and newer models, hybrid components are covered for eight years from the initial sale date or 100,000 miles. Each CPO Toyota must pass a 160-point inspection. Additional benefits like a CarFax vehicle history report, towing, and roadside assistance may be available.

Toyota’s CPO program is about average for an affordable carmaker, according to our research. Hyundai and Kia both have better programs.

Extended Warranties for Toyota Cars, Trucks, and SUVs

Not every used Toyota will qualify for a certified pre-owned warranty. However, there are still options available if you want additional coverage after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Versus the Competition

2020 toyota 4runner vs. 2020 toyota highlander.

2020 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is another deft off-road SUV, and while it rivals the Toyota off road, it surpasses it on the pavement. 2020 4Runner Performance

How does the 2020 toyota 4runner drive.

This Toyota’s V6 engine supplies plenty of power, but it’s paired with a dated and clunky five-speed automatic transmission that can be slow to shift.

Unlike most SUVs, the 4Runner has a body-on-frame build, meaning it handles more like a truck than an SUV. There’s heavy body roll, and the ride is harsh on uneven pavement. You might also need to correct the steering to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

  • Engine: 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: standard rear-wheel drive; available part-time or full-time four-wheel drive
  • Transmission: five-speed automatic

2020 Toyota 4Runner Gas Mileage

Regardless of drivetrain, the 4Runner gets fuel economy estimates of 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Those are terrible ratings for a midsize SUV , even compared to rivals with a V6 engine.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Off-Roading

It may struggle on pavement, but this vehicle excels off it. Its TRD trims are designed for adventuring, with off-road gear like 2.5-inch Fox shocks, skid plates, crawl control, and four-wheel drive.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Towing Capacity

When properly equipped, this SUV can tow up to 5,000 pounds. It has a max payload capacity of 1,700 pounds.

2020 4Runner Interior

2020 4runner interior quality.

The cabin is functional, but the styling and materials are outdated, and there are lots of chunky plastics.

How Many People Does the 2020 4Runner Seat?

The 2020 4Runner seats five people in two rows. Models with the available third row can seat seven. That third row is too tight to house most adults, but it's fine for kids. The first and second rows are more accommodating, and the second row can recline for greater comfort.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat

Available seating features:

  • Synthetic leather upholstery
  • Genuine leather upholstery
  • Four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Heated and ventilated front seats

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

The 4Runner has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the second-row middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The tethers are easy to confuse for other hardware, and the lower anchors require a lot of force to attach and are set deeply in the seats.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Features

This Toyota's infotainment system is easy to use. The graphics are sharp, and there are well-placed physical controls. Smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a welcome addition for 2020.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, three USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Available infotainment features : navigation and a 15-speaker JBL stereo
  • Other available features: push-button start, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and dual-zone automatic climate control

2020 Toyota 4Runner Dimensions

Toyota 4runner cargo space.

You'll find 47.2 cubic feet of space behind the second row of this Toyota and a total of 89.7 cubic feet behind the front row. Those are good figures for a midsize SUV . Adding the slide deck removes roughly 1 cubic foot from each total.

Models with third-row seating have a tiny 9 cubic feet of space behind the third row.

Toyota 4Runner Length and Weight

  • Length: 15 feet, 10 inches to 15 feet, 11 inches
  • Curb weight: 4,400 to 4,805 pounds
  • Gross vehicle weight rating: 6,100 to 6,300 pounds

Where Was the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Built?

2025 Toyota 4Runner is overdue replacement: New features, big changes for midsize SUV

adaptive cruise control 4runner

Toyota’s SUV lineup makes a major technical leap with the 2025 4Runner, the overdue replacement for the company’s popular midsize off-roader.

Headlining the changes, the latest 4Runner switches to Toyota’s newer GA-F body-on-frame architecture, which is used in Toyota’s larger Sequoia SUV, Tacoma and Tundra pickups, and the Lexus GX and LX SUVs.

The outgoing 4Runner’s platform and major systems were largely unchanged since 2009. That's tough sledding for an SUV that competes with fresher vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and Ford Bronco.

The 2025 4Runner also has a new electrical architecture that enables a range of sophisticated new features for everything from off-roading to infotainment.

The flagship is a hybrid that produces 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, the first time Toyota’s hybridized its stalwart off-roader.

Toyota calls the gasoline powertrain i-Force, the hybrid i-Force Max.

The 2025 4Runner should go on sale this fall.

2025 Toyota 4Runner trim levels

  • SR5 (i-Force)
  • TRD Sport (i- Force)
  • TRD Sport Premium (i- Force)
  • TRD Off-Road (i-Force and i-Force Max)
  • TRD Off-Road Premium (i-Force and i-Force Max)
  • Limited (i-Force and i-Force Max)
  • TRD Pro (i-Force Max)
  • Trailhunter (i-Force Max)
  • Platinum (i-Force Max)

Honoring 4Runner heritage

The 4Runner name stretches back 40 years. The 2025 is the sixth generation of the SUV.

Touches recalling previous 4Runners include a power-opening rear window in the tailgate and “wrap over” rear-quarter windows that extend up into the roof. The profile retains the traditional “high lift, lean body” look.

Other visual flourishes include bulging fenders and big wheel openings with flared lips. The doors tuck in for as close to the classic Coke-bottle shape as we’re likely to see on a rugged SUV.

The SUV’s styling is unlikely to alienate loyal fans who have stuck with the 4Runner as other brands refreshed their off-roaders.

The front fenders flow into a multicontoured hood with pronounced power dome. The design consciously shares elements with Toyota’s Tacoma midsize pickup.

Toyota’s Michigan design studio led 4Runner creation.

2025 Toyota 4Runner key features

  • Two-speed transfer case
  • Rear- or four-wheel drive
  • Limited slip differential on rear-drive models
  • Hill descent control
  • Off-road electronic throttle and brake control
  • Electronically locking rear differential
  • Disconnecting stabilizer bars
  • Power rear window
  • Five or seven seats
  • Removable Bluetooth speaker

New features inside and out

A 2.4L turbocharged engine replaces the previous model’s 3.0L straight-six. The base model generates 278 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque. Both figures are higher than the bigger six-cylinder produced. The hybrid adds a 1.87 kWh NiMH battery. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Fuel economy and other performance figures will be available closer to when sales begin.

Toyota will offer a base rear-drive base model and part- and full-time four-wheel-drive systems. A two-speed transfer case will be available for rugged off-roading.

The rear suspension is a multilink independent with coil springs. The front suspension has double wishbones. Disconnecting stabilizer bars will be available.

The 4Runner will be able to tow 6,000 pounds.

The interior will offer 8- or 14-inch touch screens and Toyota’s cloud-based navigation and voice-recognition system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Push-button start is also standard, with optional phone as a key service.

Five seats are standard. A third row with two small seats is optional.

Safety and driver assistance features

  • Pre-collision braking with pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle detection
  • Lane departure alert with steering assist
  • Adaptive cruise control with four following distances
  • Lane centering
  • Blind spot and cross traffic alerts
  • Hill start assist
  • Road sign assist
  • Automatic high beams
  • Driver attention alert
  • Proactive driving assist

Tesla Autopilot, Full-Self Driving

Released: 2014

IMPROVE PAGE

SUBMIT INCIDENT

Autopilot is a so-called ' A dvanced Driver A ssistance S ystem' (ADAS) designed, deve loped, and managed by Tesla .

Launched in 2014, Autopilot was initially limited to automatic parking and the ability to summon a car on private property. In 2016 automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane centering capabilities were introduced.

Autopilot is classified as an SAE Level 2 system , in which a car can act autonomously, but requires the driver to monitor the driving at all times and be prepared to take control at a moment's notice .

Full-Self Driving

Tesla's Full-Self Driving (FSD) capability is an enhanced version of Autopilot that was launched in 2016 and offers users a suite of more advanced features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic steering, automatic lane changing, auto park, traffic light recognition, stop sign recognition, and the ability to summon a car from a parking spot or garage .

A beta version of FSD was offered to a small group of users in the US, expanding in May 2021 to a few thousand employees and customers and in October 2021 to Tesla drivers scoring full marks on a proprietary safety scoring system.

The safety of Autopilot and FSD and their impact on public safety have been regularly questioned by policy-makers, regulators, customers, and others.

In October 2022, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opened a civil investigation into whether Tesla had been misleading investors about the safety of its Autopilot system, according to The Wall Street Journal .

A 2021 study of three Tesla Model 3 cars discovered (pdf) they exhibited 'significant between and within vehicle variation on a number of metrics related to driver monitoring, alerting, and safe operation of the underlying autonomy... suggest[ing] that the performance of the underlying artificial intelligence and computer vision systems was extremely variable .'

Tesla owners have also complained about the ' phantom braking ' of their vehicles, an issue traced by the Washington Post to Tesla's decision to stop using radar sensors in new vehicles in order to move to its Tesla Vision camera-based system, and to an update to its Full-Self Driving beta programme.

Fatal accidents

Autopilot and FSD are considered likely to have been involved in and/or responsible for the following fatal accidents:

Drunk driver using Tesla FSD killed after car hits tree

Tesla Model 3 collides with Subaru Impreza, kills two

Tesla Model Y crashes into tractor-trailer, killing driver

Tesla kills New York man changing tyre on expressway

Tesla Model 3 strikes over-turned truck, kills driver

Tesla Model S kills Florida Keys pedestrian

Tesla Model X veers off highway into concrete barrier, kills driver

Tesla Model S crashes into road-sweeper, kills driver

Tesla Model S collides with tractor-trailor, kills driver

Privacy abuse

An April 2023 Reuters report alleged Tesla employees had been privately sharing private videos images and videos recorded by its customers' car cameras on its internal messaging system and with third party suppliers in order to improve Tesla's computer vision machine learning systems .

A 2022/23 investigation by the Netherland's Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (Dutch Data Protection Authority) ruled Tesla had violated the privacy of people coming close to its cars. Tesla's Sentry Mode uses four cameras continuously filming everything around a parked vehicle to protect it against theft and vandalism, with images saved for one hour in the car itself.

Misleading marketing

Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk have been regularly dogged by accusations of systematically over-stating Autopilot and Full-Self Driving (FSD) capabilities, and under-stating their role in accidents - allegations have resulted in multiple complaints, investigations, and lawsuits against Tesla.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Any 4Runners have Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control?

Hello fellow 4Runner nerds! (that's a compliment) I was driving my girlfriend's car which had the Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) in the Denver stop and go traffic and I loved that feature. Do any of the newer 4Runners have Full-Speed Range DRCC? Or are they just DRCC? (DRCC works between 25-110 mph, Full-Speed Range DRCC works between 0-110 mph) Thinking of trading in my 2018 TRD Off Road Premium for a newer model. Thanks.

wait a year, I'm almost certain 2024 4Runner will have that and lane trace assist too because fluid power steering is gone

I agree with the above. My S8 has "full speed" drcc and that shit is terrifying, more so at low speeds. The automatic braking, lane change assist, lane departure, dynamic cruise control etc... is all turned off in the Audi (by me). Personal preference, for sure, but I hate it and it is scary. I cannot turn it all off in the 4R (that I know of), but because it is 5 years newer, I will say the 4R's systems seem better. Like the above poster said, if that tech suits your fancy (0+ mph etc), it is very likely the 2024 will have it (possibly and likely in lieu of all the cool things we all currently love about our 4R's). If not, perhaps an SUV from your girlfriend's manufacturer will suit your needs (Audi guy here praying it's not a BMW).

i hate the radar based cruise control and i disable it almost all the time (hold the on button down for a few seconds)... ive had mine constantly react for no reason when a car in the turning lane on my left is turning etc.. .and in foggy or raining environments it will flake out and throw an alarm that it is not working and to clean it (something like that).. couple trips to several dealerships shows that this is normal... ive had the dynamic cruise control on several other vehicles (audi, bmw, infiniti) and loved it... the 4runner implementation is horrible... wish i didnt have it..

I actually dont mind the radar cruise control. But I never use it in stop and go traffic, or two lane highways (since it’s not really “cruising” in that situation). But on a long haul interstate stretch with light traffic, I find it hard to refuse the radar’s speed matching. Once the traffic gets more moderate, and more cars are merging onto the interstate, cruise control gets turned off. I dont like giving up personal control of the throttle in those situations, whether it’s radar cruise, or regular cruise.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

The subject of research for this paper is the social position and situation of the representatives of the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders in Russia in the recent years, focusing on the period of adopting the Anti- LGBT- propaganda Law and preparation period, the 2011-2013. The research is focusing on the level of following of the human rights, discrimination, common homophobia and transphobia, and also the the representation of the LGBT-society in mass media. The research is based on data from the following 9 regions of Russian Federation: Archangelskaya, Kostromskaya, Novosibirskaya, Tomskaya, Tumenskaya Oblast’s, Permsky Krai, Primorsky Krai, Komi republic and St-petersburg. Representatives of the LGBT-society are becoming the victims of crime of hatred and incidents more and more often. In this case the reason would be the hatred and nonacceptance of the sexual orientation (homophobia) and/ or gender identity (transphobia). In other words the reason or the crime or incident would be the prejudice of a certain person against these factors, and quite often, even in cases of not being sure but supposing. Even thought the problem of discrimination against the representatives of LGBT- society definitely exists, which fact can be confirmed by the researches of the LGBT network in Russia (data taken from 2007, 2008, 2011 years), the problem would remain hidden from the eyes of the society. This is a syndrome that should be taken into consideration, because ‘the lack of information and the real data remains the obstacle for the counter-actions’. A systematic inquiry and documentation of discrimination and violence agains LGBT is helping to increase the common awareness of the current situation for the LGBT-society in Russia and underline the fact that the problem of the xenophobia against this group actually exists.

Nikita Sleptcov

The paper discusses issues that exist in Russia in regards to using homosexuality as a pokitical tool.

The author discusses political homophobia as a state strategy used in Russia by the political elite in order to create a sense of national identity and other political goals.

This article examines the current state strategy of political homophobia used by the Russian government to create a sense of national identity by scapegoating Russian homosexuals as "foreign agents," reinforcing the power of the governing elite, and distracting people's attention from government misconduct.
