Why We Love it

It was the design that made Gerald Genta's career and remains, without question, the most celebrated collection in Audemars Piguet's near 145 year long history.

In 1993, the Royal Oak line expanded to include the Offshore Chronograph, which drove the bulk of sales for AP in the past few decades. Debatably, the Offshore is responsible for carrying AP into the 21st century and ushering them into the powerhouse position that they exist in today.

This particular model, a Reference 26470ST known as the  Safari , is very much regarded as one of the great variations in the Offshore lineup. Introduced in 2005, this watch somehow manages to strike the perfect balance between sport and elegance... Featuring a stainless steel construction, an integrated brown alligator strap, an excellent cream tapisserie  dial with contrasting black  Arabic indices and a matching black handset, and matching black pushers and crown that round out the unique and memorable look of this piece.

A new movement, quick-change straps, and subtle tweaks further refine this fun-loving diver..

As of this year, the dive-specific Royal Oak is celebrating its sweet sixteenth with a newly updated reference. It spans three new colorways and represents the biggest evolution for the ROO Diver – ROOD? – since the model graduated from being the Offshore Scuba (which originally launched in 2005) to the Royal Oak Offshore Diver. The new 2021 models are rocking a more modern movement, tool-less push-button strap changing, and several small but noteworthy design tweaks.

To tackle the elephant in the room, no, the size has not changed. The new reference 15720ST retains the 42mm sizing of the standard Royal Oak Offshore Diver, along with its uncommon two-crown layout, display caseback, 300 meters of water resistance, and a time/date feature set.

Available from launch in "Trailblazing Khaki," "Navy Blue," and "Pristine Grey," each version has a steel case and comes with a second strap so owners can try the new quick-change system right out of the box. The system is fully integrated into the back of the two short intermediate lugs used to match the strap to the case. Simply press the button and release the strap (see the above photo).

Audemars Piguet plans to offer a range of straps and, alongside the pair that comes with the watch, the brand already has a trio of calfskin leather straps that conform to the new swappable design.

Inside, and forming one of the more major elements of this update, we find Audemars Piguet's modern caliber 4308, a beautifully finished automatic movement with central seconds, a date display, a rate of 4 Hz, and a power reserve of 60 hours. Visible through the Royal Oak Offshore Diver's display caseback, the 4308 also featured a black-finished 22k pink gold winding rotor.

Other updates include changes to the dial, including new markers and an "AP" signature (in gold) rather than the full brand name common to previous iterations of the ROO Diver.

As an exercise in evolving an already successful and qualified design, the new 15720ST looks like a subtle and thoughtful take on the Royal Oak Offshore Diver form. The original black-dial model that was announced in 2010 has long been a dream watch for me, and these new versions look every bit as appealing, especially given the interesting colorways (Pristine Grey for me, please) and the interchangeable straps.

Any of the three can be yours as early as May assuming you've got $25,400 and a good friend at the boutique. But please – pretty please – just promise me that if you get one, you'll also take it for a swim every once in a while. After all, you wouldn't want to be rude with your ROOD, right?

This complete mint condition safari-inspired 2nd gen (exhibition caseback) 2015 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Safari timepiece (ref 26470ST.OO.A801CR.01) is presented on a brown hand-stitched hornback alligator strap.

It has a 42mm stainless steel case with black ceramic screw-locked crown, an ivory-toned dial with “Méga Tapisserie” pattern, brown counters and Arabic numerals, and a brown hand-stitched hornback alligator strap. The three sub-dials are also in brown with white printed indications. The watch is powered by AP Caliber 3126/3840 that beats at 21,600 vph with approximately 50 hours of power reserve. The rotor is in 22K gold with bi-directional winding. See photos for accurate representation of the condition and all that’s included: outer box, original AP wooden box, the timepiece in mint condition, AP certificate of authenticity, instructions manual, and LidoWatchClub microfiber cleaning cloth; original box and papers.

Born from the genius of watch designer Emmanuel Gueit, the Royal Oak Offshore has become, since its launch in 1993, the most important luxury sports watch in the world.

Such was the success that great music stars like Jay-Z and sports stars like LeBron James have their custom editions of this model, the rapper even dedicated a song to this model titled “Show you how”.

The AP Offshore origins

The creator of the Royal Oak, Emmanuel Gueit, was the culprit of the new jewel of Audemars Piguet, the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993, being the first watch that due to its dimensions, many considered a watch without refinement, however, history has It has been proven that everyone was wrong about this point.

For the birth of the Offshore they combined pieces from two other brands that at that time, were in the possession of Audemars Piguet, Gueit used the automatic caliber of the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand and the Dubois Depraz module, thus building the piece that gives the movement of the Offshore chronograph.

However, there was still a problem, the size of the box made the movement of the interior slow, so they added a slogan to the launch campaign, "steel on the outside, gold on the inside" and that's it, but not everything was so Easy when presenting the finished model to the Audemars Piguet board, they all rejected it, assuring that it was a model that would fail.

A successful premiere

It is said that Emmanuel Gueit did not tolerate rejection well, so, after receiving a refusal, every day he approached managers in their cars, in the corridors, in short, everywhere, and it was at this insistence that they made a decision, build a few models to calm Gueit, especially when he realized failure.

It was thus that the Offshore saw the public light in 1993 and ended up being a great success, increasing its popularity day by day, becoming a synonym of boldness and authenticity, being considered by many a symbol of luxury.

He immediately became an emblem of power in pop culture, not for nothing one of the first to wear a Royal Oak Offshore was the iconic Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, he was followed by rap figures such as Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Pharrell Williams.

Hidden Marketing

And it is that something characteristic of the watchmaking house of Audemars Piguet is its constant reinvention, because in 1999, for the film End of days or The Last Judgment, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Offshore End of Days was created, which he used in the film, without it being announced, making it a cult watch due to this marketing decision.

For 2003, they presented an Offshore in a rubber version with rose gold, and like the first model, they considered that it would not be successful, so they made only 100 pieces, and within days of its delivery in Italy, the dealer requested more pieces, since the initial 100 were sold as "hot cakes", as this model was required in other European countries.

I stayed here with friends for three nights, it is a great location - easily within walking distance from many of the main sights. The dorm is quite small (slept with my bag on the end of my bed, as did my friend), but the beds are decent. The showers work well, and are clean. The only issues with the toilets were that they didn't restock the toilet paper enough which was frustrating, but otherwise they are clean and fine. The owner picked us up and dropped us of at the airports for a good price, he was very helpful and kind. The main issue with my stay was that they had an 11pm quite rule, but it was not enforced. this wouldn't have been an issue, but my room was right outside the main area and they left the TV on most of the night, and people were very loud.

The hostel is situated close to subway (about 10 minutes walk) and 15 minutes walk to Red Square.the place is really nice and cozy. One of the most important thing is that this hostel is clean.and you're able to cook food there.

Hi everyone, The place has no rules regarding noise at all, especially after the midnight. A bunch of twenty year old Russian kids behave like a bunch of the Jungle people, who simply do not recognize the fact that there are other people who have more civilized needs, e.g. sleep at night, rest in quiet rooms, have a chance to use a so called common area, etc. The (Russian) TV will work there about 20 hours a day or more, as loud as possible (which is presizely as loud as they need), and that is considered normal and acceptable. If you decide to have it off or watch something of your own, either on your laptop, or on the same very TV, prepare to a big protest. So, all in all the common area will belong to the "Jungle people", the management will not be trying to help (in a practical way, so that in the end the problem could be solved), basically I was told that there are no noise policies in Russia in general and in this hostel in particular. So if you are ok living in a kindergarten full of unruly and noise twenty- twenty five year old children who are acting out their hormones, and who are on a mission to be as loud as they can possibly be, that's the place to go. If you expect to be respected by another human being who is a guest of that hostel, forget about it, unless they are foreigners. On a more positive note, the receptionists are helpful, positive, and speak English, the place is clean and tidy, but the noise and primitive loud behaviour of the young Russians staying in the hostel and searching for a day and night entertainment is not addressed and probably not going to be addressed in the nearest or even more distant future. After midnight, expect yelling, loud laughing, shouts and complete disregard of the fact that you may sleep at night.

This is my first experience in Moscow and Russia in general, so I've been slightly surprised to meet so modern, clean and friendly hostel there! Besides, location is just brilliant, near to everything! Strongly recommended. Thank you, guys!

Near metro station, 5 min walk. Good fancy district. Rooms are small, you dont have planty of space but it is clean, stuff is correct, but dont give them to call you a taxi. Obviously thay have some kind a deal and prices is much higher.

Royal Oak Offshore

Three new versions of the Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph.

The new Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph is presented with a choice of smoked blue, green or grey dials, each incorporating the Manufacture’s “Méga Tapisserie” pattern and new Arabic numerals which supplant the customary applied hour-markers.

Each model also includes a black ceramic case and textured rubber strap.

Both the blue and green dial options feature a 44 mm ceramic case with matching ceramic bezel, pushpieces and screw-locked crown. The pushpiece guards are executed in titanium.

The third version features a smoked grey dial combined with an 18-carat pink gold bezel and pushpiece guards. The case, pushpieces and screw-locked crown are made of black ceramic.

Housed within each model’s contemporary case is the Manufacture Calibre 3126/3840, harnessing traditional craftsmanship and watchmaking expertise. This selfwinding movement is comprised of 365 components and will run autonomously for at least 50 hours.
