European Walking Tours
The European Architecture Tour can be an introduction to the city’s main buildings or can be tailored to your group’s architectural interests. For some European cities we can also arrange a bus tour, though in larger cities like London and Paris we frequently use the metro system.
Cycling is a popular alternative, especially in fairly flat cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam. Following the coronavirus pandemic our guides are finding it harder to access buildings internally, especially with large groups. The focus for now will be on exteriors.

Buildings in Berlin tend to be loaded with emotion, with the remains of the Wall a constant reminder of the way the city was divided until 1989. Guiding Architects run both customised tours for private groups, and ready-to-book tours around dozens of European cities, and offer a close-up look at Berlin's Museums Island. An extraordinary collection of five world-class museums all within yards of each other, it is Berlin's biggest inner-city project. Alternatively, the Sustainable Development tour focuses on the future-facing architecture as displayed in the curving beauty of Norman Foster's Philological Library.

Last year the Catalan capital's 1.6 million residents hosted an estimated 32 million visitors, with most heading to tourist attractions designed by Gaudi. There is, however, another way to enjoy one of the world's most celebrated cities; Barcelona Architecture Walks are run by a team of practising architects who offer five different tours of the city, including the Barcelona and the Future tour. It's a fascinating two-and-a-half-hour walk around the former industrial district of Poblenou, rebranded slightly awkwardly as 22@. The recent economic crash in Spain forced building work to stop, but 22@ is now surging ahead with new green spaces and eco-friendly buildings.

Iceland is a country of staggering natural beauty, but it also boasts breathtaking architecture too. A walking architecture tour of Reykjavik is, of course, dominated by the modernist church Hallgrimskirkja, the tallest church in Iceland, its tiered concrete facade looks imperiously over the capital. Elsewhere in the city there's the gleaming Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, its coloured geometric glass panels facing both land and sea. You would no doubt discover these two alone, but the E-Architect walking tour will also show you lesser-known examples of Icelandic architecture, such as the pyramid-shaped pedestrian and bicycle bridges along the Ellioaa estuary, which lead the curious out of the city.

Insight Cities' tour, 'Art Nouveau and Cubist Architecture – Prague after 1900', could easily be mistaken for a slightly daunting academic tour. Instead, it helps make sense of a place that only emerged from behind the Iron Curtain in 1991, nicknamed 'the City of a Hundred Spires' and widely agreed to be as beautiful as Paris. It takes in the defining features of Art Nouveau (including ginkgo biloba leaves on facades) and includes a visit to the Lucerna bar, once owned by Vaclav Havel's family and the building which housed the Grand Hotel Europa, which signified the Czech Republic's willingness to join Europe. The Cubist aspect of the city is explored via the House of the Black Madonna.

A few years ago, the National Trust restored the first ever Routemaster coach back to its pleasing green livery and set up Road trips by Routemaster. Lasting from three to six hours, the National Trust offers the kind of expert guides to the city that would surely inspire even the weariest Londoner. Look out for the Early Electric tour, which explores the development of West London suburbs from 1900 to 1950. There is individual audio equipment for ease of listening and, most pleasing of all, the National Trust can access sites usually closed to the public.
The Early Electric tour is on 5 August 2017; nationaltrust.org.uk

Architectural trip to oslo, norway.
European architecture
Enjoy the european architecture with our specialized architects in each destination.
The architecture of Europe is varied, rich in history and tradition and with great names within contemporary architects. The small size of the countries and the relatively short distances between them make it possible to visit several in a short time.
Northern Europe is diverse but its European architecture also has features in common and some countries have influenced others. There are many different peculiarities and styles that enrich and complement it. In Europe we can admire buildings from all historical periods and get excited by the extensive work of masters such as Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen or Mies Van der Rohe. We will also enjoy the great contemporary architects like Rem Koolhaas, Peter Zumthor, Norman Foster, Bjiarke Ingels, Richard Rogers, Jean Nouvel or Herzog & de Meuron.
Here are some examples of travel through the European architecture of northern Europe. We work according to the needs of each person or group and adapt each trip.
Our trip proposal through European architecture:
8 days of travel through finnish architecture in the footsteps of alvar aalto.
The trip through Alvar Aalto architecture in Finland will take us to the cities of Hèlsinki, Lahti, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki, Noormarkku, Rauma, Turku, Paimio and Espoo. Trips through the European architecture of Alvar Aalto in Finland means taking a tour through the works of one of the masters of twentieth century architecture and also find exceptional buildings within a beautiful natural environment.
6 days of travel to immerse ourselves in Dutch architecture
On this trip through Dutch architecture we will visit Amsterdam, which is perhaps the European city with the most historical relevance to urban design. Rotterdam is known worldwide for its innovative architecture and highlights the buildings of local architects Rem Koolhaas, founder of OMA or MVRDV. In La Halla we will also find interesting examples of contemporary architecture and it is essential to visit Utrecht with the Rietveld-Schröder House by Gerrit Rietveld as an emblematic work.
4 days of travel through french architecture in the footsteps of Le Corbusier
As one of the key figures of modern architecture, the work and thought of Le Corbusier are still valid, and visiting them in Paris is a fantastic way of approaching his work. We will visit the Villa Savoye in Poissy and take advantage of the trip to Paris to visit other outstanding works of French architecture of various contemporary architects such as the Arab World Institute of Nouvel, the Library of France of Perrault or the Pompidou Center of Piano and Rogers, among many others.
6 days of travel to know London after the thrust of the Olympic Games
London, with its perfect balance between tradition and modernity, is a unique city that always surprises, no matter how many times it has been visited before. To the always architectural vanguard of London it is necessary to add the new buildings built after the Olympic Games of 2012 that transformed the area of the Lower Lea Valley. On this trip through the contemporary architecture of London we can rediscover the English capital with the help of our architect guides.
4 days of travel through Basel architecture and the chapel of Ronchamp de Le Corbusier
In Basel architecture we will find true masterpieces of contemporary architectural art, created by internationally renowned architects like Mario Botta, Richard Meier or the natives Herzog & de Meuron. In addition, the Vitra campus in nearby Weil Am Rheim that includes works by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Siza or Tadao Ando, among many others. The chapel of Ronchamp, of Le Corbusier is located a short distance from Basel and is an essential sight for architecture lovers that we include in this trip to Basel and its surroundings.
6 days of travel through the Swedish and Danish architecture
This trip to the Swedish and Danish architecture is shocking because of its unconventional mix of styles. Copenhagen already in the 60s highlighted above all thanks to Arne Jacobsen, from whom we can visit part of his work. Crossing the bridge that connects Denmark with Sweden we will find Malmö and we will be able to visit the new district Västra Hamnen. Towards the north we will arrive at Helsingborg touring interesting architectural examples.
6 days of travel through Switzerland architecture at the hands of Peter Zumthor
The main objective of this trip through European architecture is to know the Swiss architecture through the work of Peter Zumthor, one of the masters of the 20th century. His extensive work is distributed throughout the country but mainly concentrated in small towns in the Canton of Graubunden. We will not forget the experience of the thermal baths of Vals. We will also take the opportunity to see other interesting buildings of Swiss architecture: in Basel, we will find works by Zaha Hadid or Frank Gehry or in Lucerne works by Nouvel or Calatrava

Comments from our clients
“La visita a Madrid nos ha gustado a todos mucho, pero era demasiado corta. ¡Hay tantas cosas que ver! Muchos recuerdos a Juan, lo ha hecho muy bien, sus explicaciones eran muy interesantes, su alemán es excelente y es muy simpático!”
Hello, It was wonderful, we learned a lot, it exceeded or expectations, thanks and see you next time! Herbert
“Thank you so much for all your help, I can’t imagine doing the congress without your help, I think I would go crazy!! All our best to you, Fernanda, Cristina and Jordi!”
Dear Artchitectours, We definitely had a good time and the guides were great. We will send you some pictures soon. Hopefully we will be able to work with you again in the future. Thank you and regards.
It was a wonderful experience. Excellent trip! An unforgettable one! Besides the interesting tour we had an amazing and beautiful interaction inside the group ( we laughed and enjoyed the company of each other as we were a one little closed family 🙂 In my opinion this (the closed relationship among the group) was an positive additive element in this trip which can’t be ignored! It made the tour even more greater .. 🙂 … To suffice, I would like to thank you and all the crew for what you planed and gave to us . It will always stay as unforgettable trip and with good memories.
“Sevilla estuvo increíble, que ciudad tan linda! Seguro volveré para ver todo un poquito más tranquilo, me encanto! Los guías también eran muy buenos y amables, el tour del sábado de verdad ha sido muy bueno!”
We had a wonderful time in Chandigarh! Thank you for setting this up!!
“Thank you so much for the tour today. Absolutely fabulous! A tour is only as good as the guide and that tour was one of the highlights of the trip. The architecture might have helped a little bit 😉 but you brought it to life. ¡Gracias gracias gracias!”
“En varias ocasiones tanto como escuela o en tours más pequeños he utilizado los servicios y asesoría de Jordi. Los viajes han todos resultado impecables tanto en las recomendaciones como en la organización, jamás un problema de ningún tipo. Los recomiendo de la manera más amplia, a Jordi y su equipo, que son muy profesionales y serios, sin ninguna duda.”
Just wanted to let you know we had the most amazing day today with Gabriel in Brasilia– it far exceeded our expectations. Regards Steph
Me dijeron que estaban muy contentos del tour y que Nuria fue muy profesional, así que muchas gracias.
We enjoyed our trip to Brasil very much. Wonderful country, great architecture and good company! We wish to thank you for your professional organisation.
Hi Artchitectours, I’m in São Paulo now, but my stay in Brasilia was fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about Gabriel; he was the most lovely, knowledgeable, accommodating guide I could have asked for. We had a great time and I will be sure to recommend you and your company to anyone traveling here. What other cities/countries do you operate in? Anyway, thank you for facilitating. It was well worth it. My best, Martin
“A l’occasion des 25 ans de notre association ‘Childebert’, nous avions souhaité marquer le coup, et organiser un beau voyage. Chicago avait été choisi de manière quasi unanime. Nous n’avons pas regretté ce choix. Il a été magistralement organisé par toi Jordi depuis Barcelone et par toi Larissa, qui nous a guidé magnifiquement à Chicago. Ta gentillesse et ton professionnalisme ont fait le bonheur de tout le monde, je peux te l’assurer.”
Dear Marta, Thank you for working so tirelessly to help make the first international trip for Dar Al-Hekma University’s Architecture Department so successful! I apologize for any inconvenience related to our requested changes in the itinerary. In the future, we will have a much better idea of the interests and capacity of the students. We learned that students can only absorb so many buildings at a time and need more free time to explore interesting neighborhoods during guided tours. In any event, the students absolutely loved Spain and several plan to return in the near future! The people we met were extremely kind and generous. We truly appreciate the efforts of you and your team on our behalf. Sincerely, Tamsen
“Los tours fueron muy bien. La guía fue encantadora y super apasionada, el grupo quedó muy satisfecho.”
Todo ha ido muy bien, la actividad tuvo mucho éxito y los clientes están encantados. Mil gracias a ti y a Daniel 🙂
“Nous revenons de Séville, les yeux pleins d’images qui resteront dans nos esprits. Le séjour s’est très bien déroulé à l’hôtel EME, le guide Daniel, particulièrement sympa et avons beaucoup apprécié la collation dans le bus de Reims a Orly.”
They have organized trips and architecture tours with us …

A Northern France Tour Through Art, Architecture, and Cathedrals
Since the Christianization of Europe in the 4th century, cathedrals have served both as centers of ecclesiastical authority and marvels of architectural genius and innovation. The resurgence of the Church as a central authority and increased overall prosperity led to the active construction and reconstruction of many truly awe-inspiring cathedrals.
Join Far Horizons on a captivating 12-day tour in Northern France and experience the birthplace of this architectural evolution from robust Romanesque to soaring Gothic architecture. Led by renowned Professor William R. Cook, popular lecturer for The Great Courses (formerly The Teaching Company), we will explore stunning sites in Chartres, Bourges, Vezelay, Amiens, Reims, and, of course, picturesque Paris. Steep yourself in the history and culture that gave rise to these monumental tributes to the heavens…
Of course, a sojourn through France must include that country’s exceptional food and drink! So along the way, experience sumptuous French cuisine along with luscious regional wines including the champagne of Troyes.
This trip is not to be missed! If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to get in touch .

Tour of Northern France Itinerary
Day 1 travel to france.
Depart for Paris, France.
Day 2 Arrive in France and transfer to the Victoria Palace Hotel
Arrive at Charles de Gaulle International airport and independent transfers to our hotel. For the next three nights, experience the Old World elegance of the Victoria Palace Hotel located in the heart of Paris. The afternoon is free to relax after our flight, perhaps replenishing ourselves with a coffee in one of the many cafés nearby. Once rested, enjoy our welcome dinner in an elegant local restaurant. (D)
Day 3 Priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs and Notre Dame
Our exploration of the sanctuaries of France begins with the fascinating Priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, a treasure of medieval architecture. This imposing Romanesque structure was discovered to be built over a chapel dating to the 5th century Merovingian dynasty, revealing the site’s long history as a place of worship. Next, we head to Musée National du Moyen-Âge: thermes et hôtel de Cluny, housing an important collection of medieval artifacts including tapestries, sculpture, manuscripts and stained glass.
This complex provides a unique glimpse into the civic architecture of medieval Paris, as it combines both Gothic and Renaissance elements. The afternoon will be spent walking through the historic section of Paris, with UNESCO World Heritage status, where we see iconic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, a masterpiece of French Gothic style. Built on a site that has been occupied since Roman times, this immense construction became a meeting place for the craftsmen’s guilds and a place of education renowned throughout Europe. The evening is free to savor la cuisine française on our own. (B/L)
Day 4 Tour Basilique Saint-Denis and Sainte-Chappelle
Today begins with a visit to the inspiring Basilique Saint-Denis, the purported birthplace of Gothic architecture. The cathedral that once stood here, built circa 1143, was the first example of the ‘new style’ in Europe, but was massively damaged during the French Revolution. Restoration work conducted in the 19th century has exposed the authentic Gothic style of the choir and west front.
Next we visit Sainte-Chappelle. Consecrated in 1248, this aptly named ‘Holy Chapel’ was built to house Louis the IX’s collection of relics of Christ and boasts a colorful interior and impressive stain glass that brings the immensity of the heavens to earth. Move on to the intriguing Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Built on the outskirts of medieval Paris, this site once served as the burial place of Merovingian kings. After its foundation in the 6th century, this Benedictine abbey went on to become one of the richest in France. If available, enjoy a private tour of the restorative work being done by the American Friends for the Preservation of Saint Germain des Prés, our donation project . (B/L/D)
Day 5 Visit Chartres
This morning we venture south of Paris, to Chartres. This picturesque town marks the point at which the Eure River divides into three branches, effectively speckling the town with bridges. We spend the day exploring the impressive Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres, with UNESCO World Heritage designation. Built upon a site that once was a place of pagan worship, the cathedral is the first example of a ‘classic’ cathedral and is the high point of Gothic architecture in the region.
The majority of the original stained glass windows are still intact, and there have been only minor changes in the architecture since the early 13th century when it was completed. Many features, which first appeared in the Chartres Cathedral, were later developed to become hallmarks of the High Gothic style.
Long on the pilgrimage route, it is venerated for its famous relic, the Sancta Camisa, said to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary at Christ’s birth. Once we have finished our explorations for the day, we overnight at the Le Grand Monarque Hotel and Spa for one night. Dinner tonight is on our own. (B/L)
Day 6 The Royal City of Bourges
Our drive from Chartres takes us to Bourges, a Royal City since the year 1100, and home to the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Bourges. Completed in the 13th century, and once the northeastern corner of the Gallo-Roman walled city, the location of this sanctuary has been a place of Christian worship since the 3rd century.
Exemplifying a supreme form of Gothic art, this architectural masterpiece demonstrates the power of Christianity in medieval France. Supported by flying buttresses, the western façade is the largest of all the Gothic edifices in France. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, this structure is an important example in the evolution of Gothic architecture. After lunch, move on to Autun.
The Romanesque Cathédrale Saint-Lazare d’Autun was constructed in the 12th century in response to the large number of pilgrims passing through on their way to Santiago de Compostela. We continue on to Vézelay where we overnight at the Hotel de la Poste et Lion d’Or for one night. (B/L/D)
Day 7 The Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay
Rising on a rock from a deep valley, the Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay, founded in 864, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and architecture. Both this abbey church and the hill upon which it stands were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
Gaining its fame for housing relics of Mary Magdalene, this site remains an important place of pilgrimage despite the exposure of its holy artifacts as fakes. Unlike its contemporaries, the subject of Vézelay’s tympanum, a decorative structure above the entrance, is the Pentecostal Mission of the Apostles.
This depiction of the events of the Pentecost serves as a spiritual defense of the Crusades and is a prime example of politics meeting religion in architecture. Continue to Montbard to visit the Abbaye de Fontaney, one of the oldest and most complete Cistern abbeys. This Romanesque structure was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1981. In the afternoon, we move on to Troyes, a charming medieval town that overlooks the picturesque River Seine, where we settle into the Hotel Mercure for one night. (B/L)
Day 8 Troyes Houses Cathedral
Located along the Seine, Troyes is home to the multifaceted Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Troyes. This complex has known many constructions, but work on its Gothic incarnation began in 1208 and continued into the 17th century. The cathedral is particularly well known for its striking stained glass dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries.
Lunch and the afternoon are on our own to explore Troyes’ lovely medieval old town featuring narrow, cobbled streets lined with colorful, half-timbered houses, mostly dating to the 16th century. Afterwards, we transfer to Reims where we overnight for two nights. (B/L)
Day 9 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims
A textile town in medieval times, Reims’ wine production took over in the 15th century as the industry of choice and has remained a tradition; the town is currently home to many top champagne houses. The medieval roots of the city are far from lost, however, as the overwhelming Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims provides imposing evidence.
This cathedral, begun in 1211, was designed for royal coronations, which meant that no expense was spared in its decoration. Its ornate façade is a reflection of the intersection of religion, art and power. Although it was built in stages between the 13th and the 15th centuries, the structure has a unity of style that represents the height of the mature French Gothic style and has UNESCO World Heritage status.
A short distance away, at the south end of town, is the largest Romanesque church in France, the Basilique Saint-Remi de Reims. Founded in the 11th century, this building was constructed over the burial site of St. Remi, renowned for baptizing the King of the Franks, Clovis I, an act which lead to the conversion of the entire Frankish people. (B/L/D)
Day 10 Touring Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon
We begin today in nearby Laon. Once a royal city, the surrounding woodlands were favored by kings for their superior hunting grounds. Here, we view the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon, built during the 12th and 13th centuries. It is one of the most important and stylistically unified examples of early Gothic architecture. Known for its imposing towers, the pointed arches in the luminous white interior show the way up to Heaven.
Next, we continue on to Amiens to begin our explorations of the compelling Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Amiens, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Erected between 1220 and 1270, this is the largest of all Gothic cathedrals and is the tallest religious building in France. Its western portals are famous for their elaborate sculptures, creations which have influenced church sculpture throughout Europe. During the 1990s, a laser cleaning process revealed that the western façade was originally painted with vibrant colors. Fortunately, lighting techniques were developed to project these colors with precision directly on the façade, recreating in a stunning display the edifice’s 13th century effect on churchgoers, which we will have the option of viewing later this evening. Overnight for one night at the Mercure Amiens Cathedrale Hotel. (B/L/D)
Day 11 Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais
Travel west to Beauvais, home to the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais. Begun in 1225, this ambitious construction features the highest vault in Gothic architecture. Despite many structural complications, work on the cathedral continued sporadically well into the 16th century, but ultimately the structure was left in its current, unfinished state.
Next, we move to Rouen, an ancient capital of the Duchy of Normandy founded on a Roman settlement. Despite modernization, Rouen has maintained many medieval treasures in its ‘old’ district including half-timbered buildings and a clock (set in a Renaissance arch).
The glorious Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen springs up from 12th-century foundations, revealing soaring Gothic arches, intricate Flamboyant carving and two towers that flank the façade. A short distance away, we view Église Saint Maclou, considered one of the best examples of Flamboyant Gothic architecture in France; its construction began sometime after 1432 during the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles.
Nearby we find the Abbaye Saint Ouen de Rouen, which has both Merovingian and Carolingian origins. Construction of the current structure began in 1318, work was slowed, however, by the Hundred Years War. The abbey church’s slow evolution is highlighted by the western façade, which dates to the 19th century and reflects a Neo-Gothic style. After our visit, we head back towards Paris and overnight near the airport for one night. Dinner is on our own. (B/L)
Day 12 Travel Home
Transfer from the hotel to the airport for our departure home. (B)

Expectations During Travels with Far Horizons
This tour is designed for flexible, energetic people who like to be active, have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. We have designed this trip to be as comfortable as possible, while also aiming to visit some remote or unique sites that other companies do not attempt to include in their itineraries. There may be days where we have very long drives and the conditions of the roads may vary. Hotels and transportation in some remote areas may not be up to western standards. There may be times when no bellhops are available; please pack with the understanding that you need to be able to handle your own luggage at times. At times we may be walking over uneven trails for a mile or more; hiking boots are strongly recommended. Not every meal will not be haute cuisine and several lunches may be picnics or box lunches. By maintaining a flexible attitude we will soon be captivated by the beauty of the natural scenery, the hospitality of the local people, and the fascinating sites we will see. Your flexibility and patience will be appreciated.
Itinerary Changes
Changes in our itinerary, accommodations, and transportation schedules may occur. While we are committed to keeping as close to the published details as possible, sometimes it is simply not possible. Weather events, government affairs, or other factors out of our control sometimes come into play. A good book to read as well as patience, flexible attitude, and a sense of humor are essential.

Paris Architectural Tours
Paris, the capital of France, is famous for buildings such as The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Centre Pompidou. Although the scale of the city centre mostly retains its historic density and height there are a number of major contemporary buildings in the city. These buildings can be visited on our French Architecture Tours . The cluster at La Défense – the Parisian business district – includes many late 20th century towers.
Major historic Parisian buildings include The Pantheon, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Opera House and Sacre Coeur. Major contemporary Parisian buildings include Arab du Monde lnstitute, The Louvre Museum Pyramid and Parc de la Villette. For visits to some of these more outlying buildings in the French capital public/private transport is necessary.
Celebrated architects with buildings in Paris include Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, I.M. Pei, Richard Rogers, Renzo Piano, Richard Meier and Tadao Ando.

However some tours can last longer – even for a few days – and can focus on certain building typologies. Our guides can also take groups to specific areas, such as new residnetial developments or La Defense to see the cluster of skyscraper buildings.
Contact Isabelle Lomholt to arrange your architectural tour to France on mob. +44 (0)7952 149814 or isabelle(at)e-architect.com
Payments are required in full prior to the architectural tour.

The tour concentrates predominantly on the works of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret – better known as Le Corbusier – in and beyond Paris, and Alvar Aalto’s key works in Paris, Helsinki and Jyvaskyla, with a digression to visit Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, and some of the important projects generated by and after it, in Bilbao. We will also be visiting many recent buildings in Berlin, including Norman Foster’s Reichstag and Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum. Another highlight will be Foster’s Millau Viaduct in southern France, the world’s tallest bridge and one of the great engineering achievements of all time. We have also allowed adequate time for participants to enjoy the many galleries, museums and other attractions in the cities we visit. DAY 1 Sunday 22 September 2024 Helsinki Arrival day in Helsinki. Check in is available after 3:00pm (Flight and pre tour accommodation options are available). This evening join Malcolm for welcome drinks.
DAY 2 Monday 23 September 2024 Helsinki In the morning, we visit the first of Aalto’s major Helsinki works, the famed 1971 Finlandia Hall, plus Heikki and Kaija Siren’s 1957 Otaniemi Chapel at the University of Technology. This afternoon we will visit three buildings within walking distance of our hotel, Steven Holl’s 1998 Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, LPR’s 2011 Helsinki Music Centre and K2S Architects’ simple and moving 2012 Kamppi Chapel of Silence.
DAY 3 Tuesday 24 September 2024 Jyvaskyla In the morning we visit two Aalto highlights, Aalto Studio (1954-55) and Aalto House (1935-36). In the afternoon we depart Helsinki by coach for Jyvaskyla.
DAY 4 Wednesday 25 September 2024 Jyvaskyla Our guide for our day in Jyvaskyla will be from the Alvar Aalto Museum. We will be visiting four of Aalto’s works, the Saynatsalo Town Hall (1952), the Muuratsalo Experimental House (1952-54) at Saynatsalo, the Museum of Central Finland (1956- 61) and the Alvar Aalto Museum (1971-1973)
DAY 5 Thursday 26 September 2024 Helsinki We depart by coach for Noormarkku to visit Aalto’s Villa Mairea (1937-39), a delightful guesthouse and rural retreat built for Harry and Mairea Gullichsen, who told Aalto that he should regard it as “an experimental house” and Aalto seems to have treated it as such. After the visit we travel to Helsinki by coach.
DAY 6 Friday 27 September 2024 Berlin We fly to Berlin in the morning. In the afternoon we have a guided tour of the city, followed by a visit to James Simon Gallery by David Chipperfield, Unite d’Habitation by Le Corbusier, Tchoban Foundation, Museum for Architectural Drawing by SPEECH and Axel Springer Campus by OMA.
DAY 7 Saturday 28 September 2024 Berlin A day at leisure to visit such attractions as the Berliner Dom, Pergamon Museum, Egyptian Museum, Charlottenburg Palace and Park or the Museum of Design devoted to the artists of the Bauhaus School.
DAY 8 Sunday 29 September 2024 Berlin In the morning we visit Daniel Libeskind’s 1999 Jewish Museum, followed by Norman Foster’s reinvention of the Reichstag, 1999, built to commemorate the move of Germany’s capital from Bonn to Berlin. The afternoon will be free
DAY 9 Monday 30 September 2024 Bern We fly to Luzern in Switzerland in the morning. In the afternoon we visit Jean Nouvel’s 1999 Culture & Congress Centre which occupies a magnificent site fronting onto the lake. A guided tour of the building’s interior is subject to the Centre’s event schedule. We then take the coach through mountain scenery to Bern.
DAY 10 Tuesday 1 October 2024 Lyon In the morning we visit Renzo Piano’s 2005 Paul Klee Gallery in Bern. We then cross into France to see Le Corbusier’s masterwork, the 1955 Chapelle Notre-Dame-du- Haut at Ronchamp. The first pilgrimage Chapel on this hill overlooking the small town of Ronchamp was destroyed by lightning in 1913 and its replacement was then ruined by shellfire in 1944. The Chapel at Ronchamp is one of western civilization’s most spiritually and emotionally intense buildings. We then travel across France by coach to visit Santiago Calatrava’s stunning 1994 Lyon- Saint Exupery (previously Satolas) TGV Station. This is followed by a short trip to our hotel in Lyon.
DAY 11 Wednesday 2 October 2024 Toulouse Today we travel by coach to the world’s tallest bridge and one of great engineering achievements of all time, Norman Foster’s 2004 Millau Viaduct. The tallest part of the bridge is 343 metres above the ground. The road deck is a maximum of 270 metres above ground. We then take the coach to the delightful town of Toulouse
DAY 12 Thursday 3 October 2024 Bilbao In the morning we cross into Spain by coach on our way to Bilbao. We meet our Bilbao guide at the remarkable 1893 Vizcaya Bridge at Pais Vasco, the oldest hanging transporter bridge in the world. The bridge was designed by Alberto de Palacio, one of Gustave Eiffel’s disciples. In 2006 the bridge was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We then move to Artxanda for a view overlooking Bilbao, before we visit Calatrava’s 1997 Zubizuri pedestrian bridge over the Nervion River close to the Guggenheim Museum and our hotel.
DAY 13 Friday 4 October 2024 Bilbao Another highlight this morning, probably the most famous building of the second half of the 20th century and one that created the understanding that architecture can reinvent cities (the Guggenheim Effect), Frank Gehry’s gleaming Guggenheim Museum (1997) which sits on the edge of Bilbao’s Nervion River. This Basque city had once thrived on the steel and shipbuilding industries but had been in such deep decline that it was nicknamed El Boxto, The Hole. A new life for the city was led by a determined and imaginative mayor, and now Bilbao thrives again, its life, streets and skyline dramatically altered by a collection of remarkable architecture. We tour the museum in the morning. In the afternoon we visit Francisco Mangado’s 2011 Archaeology Museum of Vitoria, and Santiago Calatrava’s 2001 Ysios winery at Laguardia.
DAY 14 Saturday 5 October 2024 Paris Prior to our flight to Paris, we have a tour of Santiago Calatrava’s magically made and landscaped 2000 Bilbao Airport. We commence our time in Paris with a visit to I M Pei’s 1989 Louvre Pyramid, the entrance to the gallery, followed by a visit to the Immeuble Molitor apartment (1931-34), Le Corbusier’s apartment, studio and workshop, which takes up the two top floors of the Molitor building.
DAY 15 Sunday 6 October 2024 Paris In the morning, we visit Le Corbusier’s most famous house, and one of the finest examples of 20th century architecture, the 1929 Villa Savoye at Poissy. It is a startlingly simple white cube set on a green lawn and encircled by a deeper green forest. Villa Savoye has been completely restored and is a joy to see. We then visit Alvar Aalto’s 1959 Maison Louis Carré, built for a French art dealer and collector. This masterpiece of modern architecture combines buildings, garden, furniture and interior design in a total work of art. It is Aalto’s only remaining building in France and one of his most remarkable private villas. Lastly we visit the 1977 Pompidou Centre designed by Richard Rogers, Renzo Piano and Gianfranco Franchini.
DAY 16 Monday 7 October 2024 Paris In the morning we visit two works by Le Corbusier at the Cité University. The Pavillon Suisse (1932) indicates the development of Le Corbusier’s “Five points of architecture”. Over two decades later, with Brazil’s Luis Costa, Le Corbusier added the 1953 Maison du Bresil to the campus. In the afternoon we visit Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret’s 1925 Maison La Roche-Jeanneret (Foundation Le Corbusier), followed by Tadao Ando’s Bourse de Commerce and La Seine Musical by Shigeru Ban.
DAY 17 Tuesday 8 October 2024 Paris A day at leisure provides the opportunity to visit Versailles, Giverny, the Eiffel Tower, Musee d’ Orsay, Notre Dame, Champs Elysees, Montmartre, Arc de Triomphe, Chartres Cathedral, Jardin des Tuileries and countless other highlights in and around Paris. We have our farewell dinner in the evening.
