Introduction

The racket is arguably the most essential piece of equipment for a badminton player. While the court, shuttles and playing conditions are shared by all players involved in a badminton match, the racket is fully within the control of the player. The racket is commonly viewed as an extension of a player’s arm. As such, it should complement a player’s style and level.

Whether you gravitate towards pummeling your opponents with a flurry of powerful smashes or outpacing your foes with speedy exchanges of control and precision, a racket should work for you and not the other way around. When chosen properly, a racket can be your greatest ally on court, while carelessly settling for a racket can turn it into your biggest enemy. Racket Properties

The balance of a racket is determined by finding the position on the shaft in which the racket remains stable and completely parallel to the ground. The distance between the base of the handle to this position on the shaft is called the balance point. The balance point is used to categorize the balance of a racket. Understanding the traits of different balances will allow you to select a racket that boosts your gameplay.

astrox tour 8500 review

A head-heavy racket has a balance point that is over 295mm. They are suitable for players who favor an attacking style of play. Players who are smash-happy, enjoy powerful shots or prefer the back-court can benefit from choosing head-heavy rackets, as it adds extra force behind their shots. However, with great power comes decreased racket movement. Since the weight is concentrated at the head of the racket, it becomes more difficult for the player to swing the racket head quickly. Therefore, those who use head-heavy rackets may find it difficult to react to fast shots or play a solid defensive game. As the control of head-heavy rackets takes more effort and practice to master, these rackets are recommended for experienced players vs. beginners. Beginners who lack the experience to manage head-heavy rackets can suffer shoulder injuries from misusage or apply stress to the wrist from attempting quick drives or defensive shots.

Pros: Generates powerful shots Cons: Decreased racket handling, Increased risk of injury if misused Recommended for: Attacking players, Back-court play

Head-light rackets observe a balance point typically below 285mm. With head-light rackets, speed is the name of the game. The lighter frame gives players the ability to steer the racket to their will with more ease. These rackets are characterized as being superior at executing shots at the net, blocking smashes, controlling the shuttle and enabling players to have quicker reaction times. Players who enjoy games filled with fast drive exchanges and speedy rallies should look into playing with a head-light racket. Head-light rackets are suggested for doubles games, defensive game play and front-court players. While head-light rackets enable players with great speed of the racket, they give up power in exchange for it. With less mass at the frame, head-light rackets have less momentum transferred from the swing to the shuttle, making it more difficult to produce explosive shots.

Pros: Greater control of the racket, Improves reaction speed Cons: Decreased explosive power Recommended for: Defensive and doubles players, Front-court and fast-paced play

Even Balanced

Even balanced rackets can be viewed as Jack of all Trades, as they are able to adequately execute all of the different shots. The balance point for even balanced rackets have a length between the range of 285-295mm. An even balanced racket allows you to blend the benefits of head-heavy/-light rackets while masking the drawbacks. It allows you to achieve precision in your shots while also giving you a degree of power. If you are a player who does not have a strong preference towards any particular play style, an even balanced racket would be a solid choice to support you in any situation you find yourself in on the court. Additionally, for beginners starting to play badminton, an even balanced racket can help you uncover your badminton play style. When you make the discovery on whether you are inclined to power-plays or speed-plays, you can switch to head-heavy or head-light rackets, respectively. The even balanced racket is sub-optimal for players looking for specialization, such as playing remarkably fast shots or supremely powerful smashes.

Pros: Capable of executing each shot well (though not exceptionally) Cons: No specialization towards either defensive or offensive extremes Recommended for: All around players, Beginners

Author’s note : Instead of purchasing or borrowing a racket with a different balance point to try it out, there are home remedies that a player can take to modifying the balance of point of the racket. To make a racket more head-heavy, a player can add lead tape to the head of the racket. Whereas to make a racket more head-light, a player can experiment with adding different types of grips to the handle.

Per Badminton World Federation (BWF) guidelines, the weight of a badminton racket should not exceed 100g. Yonex’s breakdown is as follows:

Note: the Astrox racket series has introduced racket weight units of 2F and 3F, unseen in any other Yonex racket series!

Lighter weight rackets are easier to control and are more accommodating towards improper form or technique. They allow for quicker recovery from shots and fluid execution of a variety of shots. As such, lighter rackets are recommended for beginners.

Heavier rackets are able to generate bigger force at the cost of racket handling. As it takes more strength to move the racket, it can be an injury risk for players who are not equipped to use it properly. Beginners are not recommended to use heavy rackets when starting their badminton journey.

The grip of a racket is measured by the circumference of the handle. Typically rackets are made in G4 or G5 grip sizes. The table below details the grips and their respective sizes.

Smaller grips are recommended for players who enjoy keeping their opponents on their toes. They allow for a greater amount of racket manipulation and make it easier to make last second deceptions.

Bigger grips allow players to deliver power by using more of their arm rather than their finger and wrist strength. Power players tend to grip the handle tighter, making a bigger grip the more suitable choice.

If you are uncertain about the grip you should select, air on the side of a smaller grip. There is always the option to add overgrips to increase the size of your current grip. Read the following post we wrote to determine the right grip to complement your play style: The Complete Guide to Yonex Badminton Grips .

astrox tour 8500 review

The flex (short for flexibility) of a racket refers to how stiff the shaft is. The stiffness of a racket’s shaft influences the racket stroke and recovery time of a player and thus is an important point of consideration when choosing a racket. By definition, when a racket is stiff, it does not bend as far back as a flexible racket would during a swing. This property makes it so a stiffer racket will return faster to its base position than a less stiff racket would (with all else being equal), giving the player a smaller time period to exert force onto the shuttlecock.

There is an excellent explanation of it in this forum post . While a stiffer racket recovers faster than a more flexible racket because of the decreased vibrations after a hit, it is more difficult to time shots. Flexible rackets are more lenient towards slower shuttle strikes but increases recovery time. This means that a player should use a stiffer racket if he/she can generate sufficient power very quickly and a more flexible racket if he/she takes more time to generate power.

Yonex categorizes its rackets into 4 levels of stiffness: extra stiff, stiff, medium, and hi-flex. As a beginner , we would recommend medium or hi-flex rackets since it is difficult for beginners to take advantage of the extra stiff or stiff properties. Seasoned players tend to use stiff and extra stiff rackets but there are certainly exceptions where they still prefer flexible rackets.

Astrox Products

The Astrox Racket Series is a premium racket line released by Yonex that seeks to replace the beloved head-heavy Voltric series . Innovative technologies introduced with the Astrox line boast the ability to unleash steep attacks. While the following features are not present in all Astrox line rackets, let’s take a look at some of the most revolutionary traits and see which ones could amplify your unique play style:

  • Rotational Generator System
  • Hyper Slim Shaft
  • Energy Boost Cap Plus
  • Black Micro Core
  • Nanomesh Neo
  • New Isometric Frame Shape

The Rotational Generator System , present in all Astrox rackets, is a state of the art technology that applies the counterbalance theory . This theory is a deviation from conventional weight distribution throughout the entirety of the shaft and frame of a racket , and instead concentrates weight at 3 points along a racket: the top of the frame, the bottom of the frame (around the T-joint) and the bottom of the racket handle. This provides maximum control by allowing players to transition from one shot to the next with utmost fluidity.

An example of this is when a player whips a net kill shot , the recovery of the racket back to neutral position is faster, allowing players to be ready for any response from their opponent. This particular weight distribution is the contributor to Astrox’s namesake quality of steep attacks as it can produce up to 2.3 degrees of a steeper angle on the attack.

The Hyper Slim Shaft is Yonex’s slimmest ever. This feature is exclusively offered within the top of the line Astrox 100 ZZ . A shaft of this caliber greatly reduces air resistance and gives players the ability to shred through the air with rapid swing speeds.

The Energy Boost Cap Plus , located where the racket shaft meets the handle, is unique in its design and shape. It contains a flatter surface for players to rest their thumb comfortably on which enables definitive control. Dips in the front of the support cap allow for the racket to flex purposefully to deliver increased power.

The Black Micro Core is a material that dulls the vibrations of the racket when it comes into contact with the shuttle, maximizing the solid feeling players get from striking the shuttle with power.

Namd is a new dimensional graphite material that attaches nano material directly to the graphite fiber compared to the conventional method of adding nano material within the resin. This revolutionary material allows for greater storage of energy during the larger flex of the racket, which is then delivered in the form a thunderous strike on the shuttle upon contact. The longer stroke of the racket due to the larger flex can equate to increased shuttle speeds of up to 7.1%! While the Namd technology allows for flexibility during quick shots such as explosive smashes, it remains stiff during slower shots such as net drops, allowing players to retain utmost control in net play. This allows for rackets that utilize Namd technology to display superior qualities throughout the entire spectrum of shots. While the majority of the rackets see Namd technology in the shaft only, the Astrox 99 and Astrox 100 ZZ employ Namd throughout the shaft and frame of the racket. What this phenomenon achieves is the doubling of contact time between the racket and the shuttle to deliver tremendous force, as there is minimal loss of energy from the player to the shot.

Nanomesh Neo is a cheaper alternative to Namd technology that serves to offer the same benefits for the economically friendly rackets in the Astrox racket series.

The New Isometric Head Shape available in the Astrox 100 ZX and Astrox 100 ZZ grants players the punchy feeling from a compact frame without the trade off of the larger sweet spot of an Isometric frame which is more forgiving to players who may not consistently strike the shuttlecock at the correct position on the string-bed.

Decide for yourself whether the Astrox racket series is a worthy successor of the beloved Voltric Series. For attack-oriented players, the Astrox racket series will simply not disappoint you!

Astrox 01 Ability

The Astrox 01 Ability is one of the newest additions to the Astrox series, and makes up one of the trio of 01 rackets. It is geared towards beginners entering the badminton scene who enjoy a simple racket which can delivery hearty smashes. The Astrox 01 Ability has the lowest balance point out of the 01 series, making it most capable of producing more controlled shots.

Yonex Astrox 01 Ability

Astrox 01 Clear

Yonex Astrox 01 Clear

The Astrox 01 Clear is one of the newest additions to the Astrox series, and makes up one of the trio of 01 rackets. It includes the signature rotational generator systems to produce steeper smashes. The Astrox 01 Clear is the middle of the 01 series when it comes to its balance point. Slightly higher than the Astrox 01 Ability , it strikes a balance with control and power in a head-heavy racket.

Astrox 01 Feel

The Astrox 01 Clear is one of the newest additions to the Astrox series, and makes up one of the trio of 01 rackets. In comparison to its brethren of the Astrox 01 Ability and the Astrox 01 Clear , the Astrox 01 Feel has the highest balance point, signifying that it is the most head-heavy.

Yonex Astrox 01 Feel

Astrox 0.7 DG

Astrox 0.7 DG

The Astrox 0.7 DG is a beginner racket that is reinforced with the durable grade (DG) technology which strengthens the racket frame and allows it to withstand higher stringing tension. Beginners can wield this racket with the peace of mind that it will carry them through their early badminton trials on court.

Astrox 1 DG

The Astrox 1 DG is one of the newest 2021 additions to the Astrox line of rackets. It’s racket features almost exactly mirrors that of the Astrox 0.7 DG , with it’s durable grade technology for heightened frame durability and NANOMESH NEO material which helps the racket recover to its natural position after contacting the shuttle.

The subtle difference between the Astrox 1 DG and the Astrox 0.7 DG is that the Astrox 1 DG has a higher balance point, making it a slightly head-heavier racket.

Astrox 1 DG

Astrox Smash

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox Smash is a lightweight racket that can help beginners to unlock their smashing potential. The Astrox Smash combines the Astrox technologies and features with a light weight to aid players who may not yet have the strength to generate powerful shots. The racket is fast and smooth through the air, allowing players to clear and play overheads shots with ease.

The Astrox Smash is budget-friendly, giving beginners an option to tune up their shots before upgrading their racket to better suit their play style.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox FB (short for Flash Boost) is supposedly the successor for the Voltric FB. The Astrox FB is another lightweight racket geared towards beginners who have not yet mastered how to efficiently manage their energy when executing shots.

The Astrox FB’s lightness offers great whip , which is the hitting of the shuttlecock with a short strike. The racket’s responsiveness allows players to excel in control at the net and mid-court play, while still being able to produce threatening smashes.

Astrox 3 DG

The Astrox 3 DG is part of the Durable Grade (DG) line of rackets that allows for players to string their rackets up to a maximum of 35 pounds given its improved material durability. Though, most players should avoid ever stringing their racket at such high tensions. Even advanced and professional players are rarely advised to string at such a high tension .

The Astrox 3 DG is a mid-tier racket which includes the Astrox series’ signature Rotational Generator System for steeper smashes, and a slim shaft for a more aerodynamic swing despite a bulkier frame from the durable grade technology.

Yonex Astrox 3 DG

Astrox 5 FX

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 5 FX uses a technology known as Light Feel Carbon Neo which produces a lighter feel and flexibility upon impact, minimizing the vibrations being felt by the player.

A mid-tier racket, the Astrox 5 FX will require skill to achieve overhead, smash and defensive shots as it does not offer great swing speeds or quick repulsion. Beginners will find that the Astrox 5 FX offers little to no assistance to their game.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 6 is an offensive-style racket that is geared towards attacking oriented players.

The Astrox 6 allows for ease of racket handling, allowing the player to maneuver the racket to their will, with ease. With manageable racket control, intermediate players up to deliver powerful shots at their opponents.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 7 is a racket that can perform in both singles and doubles matches. The Astrox 7 is able to achieve great power, but requires strong arm power to do so as a result of having a rather stiff shaft. Players without the strength to create their own power will struggle to respond to off-balanced shots.

While the thicker frame of the Astrox 7 impacts the aerodynamics, the racket displays great maneuverability making it a great tool for defensive play.

Astrox 7 DG

The Astrox 7 DG is equipped with the durable grade (DG) technology, which enhances the frame with super high elasticity high modulus graphite to make it extra durable.

The Astrox 7 DG has similar technologies to that of the Astrox 3 DG with a stiffer shaft flex. On the other hand, the Astrox 7 DG has similar characteristics to the Astrox 7 with the addition of the durable grade attribute.

While the Astrox 7 DG can generate substantial power, players still developing their swing technique will need to be wary not to overexert themselves through forceful swings to generate power with the racket. As such, the racket is recommended for intermediate players.

astrox tour 8500 review

Astrox 10 DG

Yonex Astrox 10 DG

The Astrox 10 DG is yet another addition to the line of durable grade (DG) rackets in the Astrox racket series. The durable grade technology found in the racket frame boosts its durability and allows for an increased maximum string tension on the racket.

The Astrox 10 DG most closely resembles the Astrox 7 DG in its versatility as a racket of choice for singles or doubles. Though, the Astrox 10 DG has a lower balance point than the Astrox 7 DG, giving its player better racket handling at the expense of some power.

The Astrox 10 DG would be best utilized in the hands of an intermediate player who can manage its medium flex and head-heavy balance.

Astrox 22 LT

Astrox 22 LT

The Astrox 22 LT is a variation of the Astrox 22 racket. The biggest difference being the remarkably light weight that the Astrox 22 LT comes in at – 3F (63 g). Players wielding this racket will find it extremely easy to maneuver and have the racket be at the right place to execute any shot.

The Astrox 22 LT will generate adequate power through the Astrox serie’s signature counterbalance technology in the Rotational Generator System. Though, its true shine comes from the ability to play speedy exchanges in the mid-court through fast reactive drives and dominate the front-court with quick and nimble net play.

The Astrox 22 LT uses a Control Support Cap, as opposed to the Astrox 22’s Power Boost Cap. The Control Support Cap provides a wider surface area for the player’s thumb to rest comfortably and aid their control game, which goes hand-in-hand with the Astrox 22 LT’s heightened racket handling capabilities.

Astrox 22 F

The Astrox 22 F is a very similar racket to the Astrox 22 LT in regards to technology and racket material, and even its light-weight at 3F (63g).

Where the Astrox 22 F differs from its sibling racket is in the NANOSCIENCE technology found in its racket frame. The Astrox 22 F includes NANOMETRIC DR, an enhanced graphite, throughout its frame which achieves a longer hold of the shuttle when it contacts the string bed. The elongated hold of the shuttle converts into increased repulsion power for faster and more overwhelming shots delivered by the hitter.

Yonex Astrox 22 F

Astrox 22 RX

Yonex Astrox 22 RX

The Astrox 22 RX closely resembles the Astrox 22 LT in its racket specifications. The biggest differences between the two racket is that the Astrox 22 RX is slightly lighter (2F vs. 3F), has a stiffer racket flex, and users the Energy Boost Cap instead of the Control Support Cap at the top of the handle.

While the Astrox 22 RX is still considerably light-weight head-heavy racket, its higher weight than the Astrox 22 LT gives it the additional mass for heftier swings at the trade-off a bit of maneuverability. Players looking for a boost to their power while warding off arm fatigue from swinging a heavier racket would do well with choosing the Astrox 22 RX.

The stiff flex of the Astrox 22 RX is one of the reasons it is recommended for intermediate players, rather than beginners. Intermediate players who have developed the right swing speeds would be able to unlock the benefits of a racket shaft that snaps back quicker to its neutral position.

The Energy Boost Cap found on the Astrox 22 RX allows for an increased racket flex which can provide greater repulsion power, while simultaneously reducing the racket from twisting negatively.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 55 is a racket that can pack a punch through steep and powerful smashes. Quick maneuverability is offered by means of the racket’s light weight. Players who use the Astrox 55 can transition smoothly between mighty smashes and defensive blocks or drives.

While overall light, players should not neglect strengthening their wrist as the stiffness of the racket still requires players to exhibit proper technique in their swings.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 66 was designed with a female audience in mind. This racket is capable of smooth interchanges between offensive and defensive play within a rally.

The Astrox 66 is an all-round racket that helps players improve on their fundamental game by delivering deep clears and impactful smashes while being easy to handle.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 77 is an all-round racket suitable for all players and that receives high remarks across the board. Even the 3U version of the Astrox 77 feels much lighter due to the Rotational Generator System feature, making its usage easier on the player’s wrist and forearm. This racket can produce a rather quick swing through the air, giving players the opportunity to produce smashes and clears effortlessly.

The Astrox 77 is made of a slightly longer shaft – and consequently shorter grip – than the majority of other rackets on the market. This allows for increased energy transfer from the flexing of the racket to the completion of the snapback. The Astrox 77 aids in improving a player’s power and is recommended for those who gravitate towards smashing and back-court play.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 22 holds the title as the racket with the lightest frame produced by Yonex, which will be dethroned by the new Astrox 22 LT racket. Contrary to popular belief that power is unachievable by lighter rackets, the Astrox 22 can deliver a strong smash for a racket in its particular weight class. However, it would be inaccurate to compare the Astrox 22’s smash potential to that of the Duora Z-Strike or Voltric Z-Force II .

The Astrox 22 can easily produce back-court to back-court clears and drives to the back-court, while also performing remarkably in defense. True to the nature of light rackets, net kills and net drops are executed without difficulty. The lightness of the frame head helps intermediate players to execute shots that utilize the wrist with precision. However, more technical shots at the net will still require technique and experience to execute with the Astrox 22.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 38D (D is for Dominate) is the lowest-tier version of the Dominate series, behind the Astrox 68D and Astrox 88D .

The Dominate series focuses on offensive via back-court play, at the expense of control and finesses of racket handling.

Players should not mistaken the low-price point as appropriate for beginners. The combination of a stiff racket and head heaviness will be unforgiving to those without proper technique and form, leading to higher risk of mishits and/or injury.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 38S (S is for Skill) is the lowest-tier version of the Dominate series, behind the Astrox 68S and Astrox 88S .

The Skill series focuses on quick reflexive and offensive play in the front-court as well as impenetrable defensive. The trade off is a loss in the explosiveness behind offensive shots from the back-court.

The Astrox 38S is able to achieve quick swing speeds through the air, but is still advised against beginners due to the stiffness of the shaft, making it harder to handle for those of lesser badminton experience.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 39 is the low-tier version of the much more popular Astrox 99 . The ability to deliver the steep smashes revered in the Astrox 99 are noticeably dulled by the difference of materials used in the racket’s composition. Most prominently is the absence of Namd technology throughout the entirety of the Astrox 39 racket, as seen in its counterpart.

Players who wield the Astrox 39 can expect for crisp and powerful offensive shots with the caveat that they have the skills to handle this racket marketed towards advanced players. Without proper technique, misuage of the racket can lead to injuries in the shoulder.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 68D (the D is short for Dominate) is a cheaper alternative of the Astrox 88D that is more similar in qualities to the Astrox 68S. The main difference with the Astrox 68D is that it is more flexible than the Astrox 68S and is designed to be used by back-court players.

The stiffness of the Astrox 68D is not one that is beginner-friendly, but when used properly can translate into quick responses and great control. The Astrox 68D is a Jack of all Trades as it can deliver each shot well, but none of them exceptionally.

Astrox 68S

The Astrox 68S (the S is short for Skill) is a mid-tier version of the Astrox 88S . This racket is able to deliver good power at the cost of player fatigue. The Skill sub-series within the Astrox line of rackets is geared towards players who prefer the front-court.

While the Astrox 68S does not boast impressive swing speed or movement through the air, it can aid a player in producing solid net play with a high degree of accuracy.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 69 is a solid racket that is even more head-heavy than the Duora Z-Strike . The racket sports a 10 mm longer shaft than a regular racket’s shaft. True to the series, the Astrox 69 performs well in the smash category.

While the Astrox 69 consumes a player’s energy, the investment is paid off in the form of breaking down the opponent’s defense. The area of caution for the Astrox 69 is with net play, as the racket feels a bit sluggish at the net.

Astrox 77 Pro

The Astrox 77 Pro is one of the lightest options within the head-heavy Astrox series. It is suitable for allround players generally interested in 4U rackets with just a touch of head weight, or 3U rackets that are perfectly even-balanced.

It has the shot stability of Astrox rackets and the maneuverability and control of Arcsaber rackets. It is more forgiving than the  ARC11 Pro , which is marketed as the flagship balanced option. It packs a bigger punch than the  Arcsaber 7 Pro (ARC7 Pro)  while remaining just as easy to use.

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 88D is the brother of the Astrox 88S that produces big hits. Even though it is head-heavy, the racket weight is not concentrated at the top of the frame, as the Astrox 88D has a flex point at the middle of the racket frame which allows for more generation of power from the racket to the shuttle. Fearsome smashes can be produced while still allowing the racket to be nimble, quick and easy to maneuver in the air. While a full smash from the Astrox 88D is just shy of what can be produced by supreme smashers Voltric Z-Force II or Voltric 80 , the half to 3/4 smash is truly devastating.

This racket is the front-runner for players who prefer the back-court in doubles. Clears are effortless, smashes are pressing, and drop-shops catch opponents off-guard as the Astrox 88D can disguise the back drop masterfully as a smash or clear. While having a heavier head in comparison to the Astrox 88S makes it a little slower at the mid-court, the Rotational Generator System allows for the player to recover from each shot quickly to be ready for the next shot. This quality is the saving grace for a head-heavy racket in doubles play, where players are required to constantly shift between offensive and defensive shots to stay on par with their opponents.

astrox tour 8500 review

Author’s pick. The Astrox 88S is a top of the line racket designed for the ultimate front-court player in a double’s setting. The Astrox 88S is the perfect complement to its formidable brother, the Astrox 88D . The Astrox 88S sports a lighter frame for a head-heavy racket, which allows for quicker swinging speeds. The potential for great racket maneuverability makes the racket optimal for front-court play, where players can execute delicate net drops and placement with masterful precision.

The Astrox 88S has a unique flex point near the T-joint located at the bottom of the frame, allowing the player to hold the shuttle on the string-bed slightly longer and be able to dictate the direction of the shot with more finesse. While the smash from the Astrox 88S is not as great as the Voltric 80 or its Astrox 88D counterpart, it remains true to its strengths in the front-court. Drives can be discharged with power and speed for a prolonged period without tiring the player. The racket supplements shots that require subtle movements in the wrist and fingers such as backhand shots, cut-offs or deceptive drop-shots from the back-court.

The Astrox 88S is the ideal racket for play makers who seek to transform a defensive position to an offensive opportunity for their partner deliver the decisive final blow.

Astrox 88D Game

The Astrox 88D Game is one of six variations introduced in 2021 to the Astrox 88 racket line. The Astrox 88 Game rackets are arguably the easiest in the racket line to use due to its medium flex in comparison to the stiff flex of the Astrox Tour and Pro rackets.

True to its name as a racket of (D)omination, the Astrox 88D Game performs well in the back-court and is an ideal weapon for a doubles player. The new line of Astrox 88 rackets includes a new technology known as the VOLUME CUT RESIN. This is a revolutionary upgrade to the Rotational Generator System in introducing lighter and stronger materials into the racket frame. This boosts the unique science of weight distribution for an even quicker transition between consecutive shots.

The Astrox 88D Game is made with the NANOMETRIC NEO NANOSCIENCE, giving it increased frame and shaft flex for more explosive power.

Pick up the Astrox 88D Game if you enjoy dominating the badminton court from the rear and are looking for a companion to match your offensive prowess.

Astrox 88S Game

Yonex Astrox 88S Game

The Astrox 88S Game is the sister racket to the Astrox 88D Game . One of Yonex’s newest additions to the Astrox 88 line of rackets, the Astrox 88S Game shines in the mid-to-front court play.

Made with a slightly shorter overall length, 5 mm less than the Astrox 88D Game, the Astrox 88S Game provides its player ultimate feedback and racket feel and handling. Users of the Astrox 88S can be confident in being ready for any and all shots their opponent may fire their way.

You will also find the VOLUME CUT RESIN state-of-the-art technology within the Astrox 88S Game, which amplifies the benefits of the Rotational Generator System for even faster racket recovery.

The Astrox 88S Game is equipped with the Energy Boost Cap which stabilizes the shaft, while also allowing it greater flex to generate additional power.

Become a menace in the front-half of the court to set your partner up, or clinch the point yourself with the Astrox 88S Game.

Astrox 88D Tour

The Astrox 88D Tour is one of the six new rackets introduced into the Astrox 88 line of rackets in 2021. The Tour rackets can be considered the middle tier of the three sub-series: Pro, Tour, and Game.

The Astrox 88D Tour builds on the idea of being a racket designed for power-hungry players who play the rear-court, especially in the doubles discipline.

Similar to the other new additions to the Astrox 88 line, the Astrox 88D Tour also contains the VOLUME CUT RESIN , which optimizes the weight distribution characteristics of the Rotational Generator System, allowing for speedier recovery and transition between shots.

The Astrox Tour and Pro rackets also have an enhanced Isometric Head Shape, which enlarges the sweet spot on the string bed to maximize the surface area players can hit for the best shot response.

The Astrox 88D Tour exhibits the revolutionary Namd material in the shaft, which is capable of storing and unleashing tremendous power through powerful shots. This particular technology makes the Astrox 88D Tour racket a force to be reckoned with through its dominating potential in the back-court.

The Astrox 88S Tour is the partner in crime to the Astrox 88D Tour racket. The Tour sub-series in the Astrox 88 line is the middle tier of the new 2021 additions.

Similar to the Astrox 88D Tour, the Astrox 88S Tour is made with the New Isometric Head Shape which gives the racket a larger sweet spot for the player to execute their shots with the best result. Additionally, the Astrox 88S Tour is also found with VOLUME CUT RESIN which supplements the Rotational Generator System by means of lighter and strong materials to maximize the racket’s recovery and readiness for each consecutive shot.

The Astrox 88S Tour, part of the SKILL side of the Astrox 88 line, is 5 mm shorter in length for increased racket control. Speaking of control, the built-in T-joint , strengthens the connection between the frame and shaft for heightened control. This, coupled with an extra slim shaft, and Namd technology, takes control, precision, and racket handling to the next level. All together, these attributes make the Astrox 88S Tour a formidable racket to command the front court.

Astrox 88D Pro

The Astrox 88D Pro was introduced in 2021 as part of the six new rackets to the Astrox 88 line. The Pro sub-series is considered the top of the line in comparison to the Tour and Game sub-series.

The Astrox 88D Pro, true to its Dominate designation, is geared towards players who enjoy dominating their opponents with mega powerful shots from the back-court.

Similar to the Tour sub-series, the Astrox 88D Pro has Namd technology in its extra thin shaft to unleash colossal smashes through the transfer of increased stored energy in an incredibly speedy swing. The New Isometric Head Shape aids the player’s shot effectiveness in increasing the area on the string bed players should strike the shuttle with, otherwise known as the sweet spot.

With each of the new additions to the Astrox 88 line of rackets comes the VOLUME CUT RESIN. This technology boosts the weight distribution concept of the signature Astrox hallmark Rotational Generator System. This extra compact and strong material allows players to execute clean shots in one second and become immediately alert and ready for the next shot in another.

The Astrox 88 Pro sub-series is also equipped with the New Built-In T-Joint which is a lighter weight version of the Built-In T-Joint . The New Built-In T-Joint is able to provide the shuttle greater stability on the strings, which can boost the delivery of power.

Meant for the truly menacing back-court player, the Astrox 88D Pro found in the hands of the right player will truly be unstoppable.

Astrox 88S Pro

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 88S Pro is the perfect complement to the Astrox 88D Pro . The Astrox 88S Pro is part of the super Pro sub-series of Astrox 88 rackets which does indeed deliver to its name.

Designed with control players who tactically and strategically command the front-to-mid court, the Astrox 88S Pro’s stiff and extra slim shaft gives its player phenomenal racketing handling capabilities, feel, and responsiveness. This is further elevated through the inclusion of VOLUME CUT RESIN which amplifies the Rotational Generator System’s weight balance and distribution mechanics for optimal transition between shots.

The Namd technology found in the shaft remains extra rigid during slower shots, which is music to the ears of control player. This characteristic allows control players to have the utmost authority over where they want to place the shuttle.

The New Built-In T-Joint , also found in the Astrox 88D Pro, provides a different type of benefit for the Astrox 88S Pro users. As a player who enjoys the technical and precise game play, the New Built-In T-Joint’s ability to stabilize the shuttle provides increased control.

And finally, with the Energy Boost Cap Plus , twisting of the shaft is minimized for better stability, while the Solid Feel Core in the frame reduces discomfort to players from disruptive vibrations.

A racket that offers comfort and control at the peak of what the market has to offer, the Astrox 88S Pro will surely not steer you wrong.

astrox tour 8500 review

Best value. The Astrox 99 has gained the attention of the badminton world as the racket of choice by the World No. 1 Men’s Singles player Kento Memota. The Astrox 99 sits between the Astrox 88S and 88D in terms of its weight distribution in the frame of the racket. It is the first racket to boast the Namd technology throughout the entirety of the racket (frame and shaft) in contrast to the other rackets in the Astrox racket series which deploys this technology in the shaft only.

A defining characteristic for the Astrox 99 is its ability to produce a stellar smash with a noticeably steeper angle. The racket maneuvers well through the air, with a quick and nimble feel. The Astrox 99 has a more solid feeling in comparison to the Astrox 88D , as observed in its crisp clears. Contrary to the typical fatiguing from conventional head-heavy rackets, the phenomenon is not felt through continuous drive exchanges. However, as it pertains to offensive drives, the Astrox 99 is outshined by the Astrox 88S and thus is not suitable for offensive doubles play.

While the benefits are clear, beginner and intermediate players should be cautious in selecting the Astrox 99. The benefits of the Astrox 99 are fully unlocked by players who have mastered hand speed, timing, technique and physique. Players with not enough practice or wrist/arm strength may put their bodies at risk of injury. As such, this racket is an exceptional choice for experienced players.

Astrox 100 ZX

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 100 ZX is a pair to the Astrox 100 ZZ , which are the latest edition to the Yonex Astrox line of rackets. These rackets feature a new isometric frame which gives players the punchy feel of a compact frame without sacrificing the larger sweet spot offered by an isometric frame. With more weight distributed at the top of the racket, the Astrox 100 ZX produces solid and powerful smashes that are just a hair less than the Astrox 88D .

The relatively fast snapback of the racket allows for the Astrox ZX to recover from a shot quickly, whether that is executing fast flat drives or delicate shots at the net. The touch of the racket does not match that of its Astrox 100 ZZ counterpart.

While the Astrox 100 ZX is swift through the air, it can be difficult to nimbly change the racket’s direction or achieve the highest degree of reactive response times. The Astrox 100 ZX, with its extra stiff shaft, is designed for advanced players who are back-court oriented attackers who enjoy a harder feel, with enough control for precise shot generation.

Astrox 100 ZZ

astrox tour 8500 review

The Astrox 100 ZZ is regarded as the true successor of the legendary Voltric 80 racket. The Astrox 100 ZZ was introduced alongside its twin, the Astrox 100 ZX but seemingly outshines it in many aspects. Both of the Astrox 100s sport a new isometric frame for better feel and new support cap for better comfort for thumb placement.

The Astrox 100 ZZ exhibits a Hyper Slim Shaft, Yonex’s slimmest shaft to date, produces unparalleled snapback speeds while also being able to slice through the air with lightning fast swings. Yonex boasts that this revolutionary shaft can reduce air resistance by up to 11.8%! The Astrox 100 ZZ joins the Astrox 99 as the only other racket that displays the new Namd technology through the entirety of the racket, which aids the racket in achieving devastatingly steep smashes. A Black Micro Core works to absorb more vibrations to give players exquisite feel and control of the racket.

The Astrox 100 ZZ can deliver an arsenal of shots magnificently, ranging from elegant net drops and kills to impeccable defensive and speedy flat drive exchanges. The racket exhibits similar qualities to that of the Duora Z-Strike , with differences in the technology – namely the frame shape and dual optimum system vs. rotational generational system. However, the Astrox 100 ZZ has ease in employing whip to generate power without the feeling of fatigue that is felt from the Duora Z-Strike .

This racket is crafted for advanced players who prefer front-court or defensive doubles play, but can also be lethal in singles. The Astrox 100 ZZ ascends from being a Jack of all trades to a King of all trades because of its all around excellent capabilities.

Yonex Astrox 100ZZ vs Astrox 100 Tour vs Astrox 100 Game Badminton Rackets Review & Comparison

Updated: Oct 4, 2022

Astrox 100ZZ, Astrox 100 Tour and Astrox 100 Game

Many of you would be familiar with the Astrox 100ZZ , which is the Japan-made model of the Astrox 100 series. Recently, Yonex decided to produce some of its flagship Astrox series rackets in Taiwan, these include the Astrox 88 series and the Astrox 100 series . Thus, the Tour and Game rackets were born. For the Astrox 88 series, apart from the top-range Astrox 88S Pro and Astrox 88D Pro , Yonex has also presented the made in Taiwan Astrox 88S Tour , Astrox 88S Game , Astrox 88D Tour and Astrox 88D Game . Similarly, for the Astrox 100 series, apart from the Astrox 100ZZ , we also have the Astrox 100 Tour and Astrox 100 Game.

Check out the Astrox 100ZZ :

The Tour rackets are the mid-range products, whereas the Game rackets are the lower-range products in their respective series. Therefore, in terms of price, quality of production and materials, the Japan-made flagship models definitely top the chart, followed by the Tour rackets and then lastly, the Game rackets. However, I must say that I am really impressed with the Tour and Game rackets - they are very affordable and at the same time, very well-made with similar finishes compared to the Japan-made flagship rackets.

Let's talk about the Astrox 100 Tour and Game rackets now.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of the review, If you are like me who used to wonder how to tell each of the three rackets apart visually, let me break it down for you.

The most obvious way to tell the Tour and Game rackets apart is, of course, by looking at the decal on the racket frame and shaft. The word "Tour" is painted on the frame and shaft of the Tour rackets, and the word "Game" is painted on the frame and shaft of the Game rackets.

Next is to look at the support cap right above the wooden handle on the racket. The Tour rackets have a similar support cap to the Japan-made flagship made rackets, and the Game rackets have the older generation boxy design racket support cap on them which, coincidently, is the same one used on the second generation Astrox 88S and Astrox 88D .

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Tour and Game

Thirdly, you will notice that the Japan-made flagship and Tour models have a fully recessed racket frame profile whilst the Game models only have the top half of the racket frame recessed.

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Tour and Game

Fourthly, in terms of shaft thickness, expect the Japan-made models to have the thinnest shafts. The Tour rackets will then have a thinner shaft compared to the Game rackets.

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Tour and Game

So far, the same physical features have been used in the flagship, Tour and Game models of the Astrox 88S, Astrox 88D and Astrox 100 series so it looks like Yonex might carry on with this trend going forward.

Moving on to the review of the rackets now.

The Astrox 100ZZ is an extremely fast racket, with plenty of easy big power albeit a smaller sweet spot compared to the traditional Yonex rackets. The racket shaft is stiff but still very nice to play with overall.

For me, the 3U weight class of the Astrox 100ZZ is too heavy. The 3U Astrox 100 ZZ is a much bigger beast compare to the 4U version, essentially everything is souped up – the weight, the solid feel, the oomph behind it, as well as the energy required to play well with it too! It is certainly too much for me to handle, as I'm not able to generate enough racket head speed, especially in the short sharp shots to do this amazing racket justice. In tricky situations where I had to dig out very very late, I wasn't able to play very well with this head heavy racket. The 4U is the preferred weight class for me. However, people who are super strong will absolutely love this racket. Viktor Axelsen , for instance, plays amazingly well with this racket. The amount of power and the crisp feeling you get out of this racket is absolutely insane.

For the Astrox 100 Tour , as mentioned before, is made in Taiwan. You can see it has the words "Nanomesh Neo" printed on the racket and the material itself is used in the frame of the racket. The shaft is what Yonex calls the Rexis shaft which is slightly thicker than the one used on the Astrox 100ZZ at 6.7 mm, but it does contain the innovative Namd material as well.

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Tour

For me, the Astrox 100 Tour 4U model plays really really well, just a touch slower compared to the Astrox 100ZZ . It felt decently head heavy and has no problem generating a lot of power with good timing. I thought the shaft of the racket was pretty stiff and the swing of the racket felt super smooth. Overall, a very nice racket to play with.

The 3U version of the Astrox 100 Tour , on the other hand, was heavier, more solid and slightly stiffer compared to the 4U version. It really reminded me a lot of the Astrox 100ZX to be honest. I believe they might have very similar design philosophies and I wouldn't be surprised if it was made exactly the same as the Astrox 100ZX model, just painted differently. Again, stronger players will really like this racket.

Let's now look at the Astrox 100 Game model rackets. In this model, there is no Rexis or Namd materials in the racket shaft or the racket itself. It is replaced by the Nanomesh Neo material in both the frame and shaft and the shaft thickness is 7.2 mm, the thickest amongst the three models.

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Tour and Game

Besides this, it also has the biggest frame amongst the three models at 24 cm x 18.7 cm. Ironically though, it has the thinnest frame at only 9.8mm compared to 10.5mm and 10.6mm for the Astrox 100ZZ and the Astrox 100 Tour rackets. I guess Yonex thought having a thinner frame might speed this racket up considering its bigger frame.

In terms of playability, I thought the Astrox 100 Game rackets have a slightly lighter head in comparison to the Astrox 100 Tour and the Astrox 100ZZ models. They are also just a touch less stiff compared to the Tour models. Out of the three models, I think the Astrox 100 Game rackets are the easiest ones to play with, but have the least power and stiffness.

If we look at the Astrox100 Game 3U rackets, they are, overall, heavier compared to the 4U rackets but still very nice to play with. Punchy and solid. Again, stronger players will really enjoy the 3U models.

Here is a table showing the rackets' measurements for you to easily compare them against each other.

astrox tour 8500 review

As these rackets are so new, Yonex hasn't even put them on the racket matrix, so here is my interpretation of where the Astrox 100 Tour and Astrox 100 Game rackets might stand in the racket matrix.

astrox tour 8500 review

In terms of pricing, I believe the Tour rackets are about 25 to 30% less compared to the Japan-made flagship models, and the Game rackets are in turn 25% to 30% cheaper compared to the Tour rackets. So the Tour and Game rackets are actually really good options if you have a tighter budget.

I would also add that both the Astrox 100 Tour and Astrox 100 Game rackets are head-heavier than the Astrox 88S and Astrox 88D Tour and Game models.

Overall, I am really impressed with these apparently lower-range, made in Taiwan models of the Astrox 100 series rackets. My only disappointment would probably be that the Tour and Game rackets come pre-strung with factory strings. I guess it's probably a nice idea to have free strings but when you're buying a racket that is retailed between £140 to £180, you would expect to get fairly decent strings on a pre-strung racket. However, what you are getting is in fact unbranded, unmodelled strings, which are not even one of Yonex's cheaper strings such as the BG65 or BG3 .

CKYEW Yonex Astrox 100 Game strings

The ones I got are also strung at an extremely low tension which is almost unplayable. It really is a shame, because bad strings ruin the feel of good rackets. Imagine buying a Ferrari, and they put on really poor, cheap tires that make the car un-drivable. So my advice to anyone who is buying the Tour and Game rackets would be to get them re-strung with a string of your own preference at your own tensions. This will maximise the enjoyment you will get out of these rackets.

Yonex Astrox 88 Racket Series: Picking the Right One for You

The Yonex Astrox 88 rackets have been the racket of choice for many professional players, including World #1 Men's Doubles, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. These rackets are divided into two types, the Skill (S) and Dominate (D) series designed for your playstyle. Recently, Yonex has also launched the Pro versions of these rackets, the Yonex Astrox 88S Pro and Yonex Astrox 88D Pro. In this post, we will take a look at the Yonex Astrox 88 Racket Series and help you decide which one is right for you!

Yonex Astrox 88 Badminton Rackets at Badminton Warehouse

High Level Comparisons

Grip & shaft length.

The biggest difference between the original Yonex Astrox 88 rackets and the new pro version is the length of the grip and the shaft. The new pro versions have a longer grip and a shorter shaft, to allow players to have greater control of their shots.

The intention of this was to allow players to have quicker reactions in the front court due to the shorter shaft.

Racket Speed

The shorter shaft of the Yonex Astrox 88 Pro rackets allows players to have a quicker swing speed and an easier time manipulating the racket in defense. It also makes it much easier to have a quicker reaction in the front court, allowing you to cut off quick shots and play more skill shots at the front court.

On the other hand, the longer shaft of the original Yonex Astrox 88 makes it easier to hit overhead power shots without having to add a lot of power on your own.

Head Weight

The Pro version of the rackets have a much lighter head feel, making it easy to manipulate and keep your racket up on the court. This allows doubles players to have an easier time controlling the front court and hitting the shots down.

Which is Right For Me?

It may be a tough decision to pick between any of these 4 great rackets, but our intention at BadmintonWarehouse is to make this choice easy for you. Let's take a look at each of these rackets individually and see which one may fit your playstyle!

Yonex Astrox 88S Pro

This racket was built to shine for doubles players in the front court! If you are a player with good front court touch or want to play a quicker game in doubles, this racket may just be for you! With a shorter shaft, it's much easier to hit quick spin net drops, pushes, and kills in the front court.

If you already own the Yonex Astrox 88S and are looking to make an upgrade, we highly recommend giving this racket a try. If you are completely new to the Yonex Astrox 88 Series, the Yonex Astrox 88S Pro is a great place to start.

Pick one up here:  Yonex Astrox 88S Pro

Yonex Astrox 88D Pro

This racket was built for attacking players who wanted an easier time moving the racket around in the mid and back court. Overhead swings are much quicker and mid-court drives have much more maneuverability. On the defensive end, it is also much more reliable as the improved head speed helps us recover from dangerous situations.

If you are coming from the Yonex Astrox 88D, this racket may feel a little weaker overhead due to the faster racket speed. However, we are confident that this racket still delivers heavy shots and the quicker head speed provides many more benefits across all aspects of the court. We also consider this to be an upgrade to the original Yonex Astrox 88D racket!

Yonex Astrox 88S

Kevin Sanjaya's racket of choice, this racket has been a staple in many pro players' equipment bags for the past few years. The racket is extremely quick and lets you play to your own skill, using its light frame to help you hit tight net drops, pushes, and cutoffs. This was made originally for doubles players, but many singles players such as Viktor Axelsen use this racket as well.

This racket has been time tested and proven to work for all skill levels, from beginners to the top professionals around the world. If you are looking for a reliable racket for a skill type player, be sure to check out the Yonex Astrox 88S.

Get the original Astrox here: Yonex Astrox 88S

Yonex Astrox 88D

D stands for dominance and like its name suggests, this racket was designed for players who focus a bit more on their power shots than their skill shots. Compared to the S version above, it is slightly lacking in its performance in skill shots like net drops as well as its quickness in defensive shots. However, it makes up for this with its longer length allowing you to generate much more power in your smashes.

This racket has also been time tested and proven to work for players in all skill levels. Particularly for power players, if you are looking for a racket to improve your game, don't hesitate on picking up the Yonex Astrox 88D!

Get the dominance version here: Yonex Astrox 88D

Yonex Astrox 88 Series Recap

The Yonex Astrox 88 Badminton Racket Series is extremely versatile and can fit players of all skill levels and types. There are certainly differences between each racket, but we at BadmintonWarehouse believe that you won't go wrong with any one of them. If none of these seem like a good fit, we recommend checking out the Yonex Astrox 100 ZZ Racket as well — one of our personal favorites!

YONEX Badminton Racquet Astrox Tour 8500 (4U G5) Blue |Made in Japan

A world-first, new dimension graphite material, Namd, greatly improves the adhesion of the graphite fibers and resin by attaching nanomaterial directly to the graphite fiber. In high performance racquets, it is common to combine nanomaterials with resin that connects graphite fibers, but in Namd, nanomaterials are directly adhered to the graphite fibers and resin is greatly increased. This major improvement produces a shaft that flexes and stores energy, delivering explosive force on impact with the shuttle. Extra Slim Shaft is more aerodynamic and reduces air resistance making your shot stronger and more intense shot. This racket is very well balanced and awesome to play with, and with the price over performance, it gives you the best value for money.
