Australia to 75-year-olds: Prove you are healthy, otherwise stay home

Alan Hess, 80, and his significant other, Harriet Brooks, 78, are looking forward to a dream cruise that will end in Sydney, Australia.

But because of some rare new restrictions required to travel to the country down under, whether they can go may depend on their health.

The Australian government wants tourists older than 75 to get a visa that requires a chest X-ray and a medical exam from one of their certified doctors before entering the country. Good luck finding an Australian-certified medical provider. There are only two in the entire state of Florida, one at Miami International Airport and the other in Brooksville, about 45 miles north of Tampa. Some states do not have any certified doctors; most only have one.

“This has been a real nightmare,” Hess said.

Hess and Brooks, who live in a retirement community west of Boynton Beach, learned of the requirement just weeks before they paid $16,000 for the cruise that will end in Sydney on Oct. 19. They plan on spending five days in Australia — that is, if they are allowed to leave the ship.

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs, in a statement emailed to The Palm Beach Post, says the rule is designed “to protect the country from public health and safety risks and safeguard the access of Australian citizens to health care and community services in short supply. It reflects the fact that the health of those over 75 years of age is more likely to deteriorate quickly, with significant cost to the Australian community if they are unable to depart.”

The tests are required regardless of the length of your stay. The new rule took effect in July.

An expensive, time-consuming process to get the paperwork

Because the cruise was on Royal Caribbean, Hess said he contacted their corporate office to seek help.

"They told us it is our problem. I explained that as long as they are bringing passengers to Sydney, it is their problem," Hess said.

Hess and Brooks each had to spend about $400 for the tests and medical exams. Hess said they wasted an entire day by the time they completed their exams and returned home.

“This is money we never expected to spend. And as of Sept. 18, we still don’t know if we passed the exams.”

Michelle Thomas, their travel agent, said she was shocked at how complicated and difficult Australia has made it for 75-year-olds trying to visit the country.

“It is ridiculous," she said. "The process used to take a few minutes. I even contacted a visa company that I work with to obtain visas for them. The company said there was nothing it could do.”

Hess says he was told by government officials that the tests have been submitted “to the department's migration medical services provider for further assessment.” Brooks has been told that the processing of her visa application is moving forward but “a case officer” must investigate the case before the visa can be issued.

“Do not contact the department about health examinations in the meantime,” a government official told Brooks in a letter that was provided to The Post.

Their trip to Australia is coming fast, and they are still in limbo

Meanwhile, Hess and Brooks are running out of time. Their cruise aboard the Celebrity Solstice leaves from Hawaii on Oct. 1 and arrives in Sydney on Oct. 19. Whether they spend their five planned days in Australia all depends on whether they get their visas.

Asked what happens if they don't, Hess said: "We have no idea but we are so looking forward to the five days in Australia."

Hess said he has asked both the U.S. Embassy in Australia and the Australian Embassy in Washington for help. He has yet to receive a response from either of them. Hess says he expects to have plenty of company, noting that there are a lot of people on cruises who are 75 years or older. “They are throwing us to the wolves."

He said Royal Caribbean has said that if he and Brooks do not have their visas when the ship leaves from Hawaii, they won't be able to board on Oct. 1 even though they have visas from the other countries on the itinerary. None of those places — New Zealand, French Polynesia and Tahiti — required the special medical tests insisted on by Australia.

The subclass 870 visa instead is a longer-term 3-year tourist visa specifically designed for parents. With it, parents can stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years and no more than 10 years. This allows them to enter and re-enter Australia as needed to visit their stepchildren, adopted children or biological children more conveniently and affordably.

However, if your current visa is due to expire while you are still in the country, you will need to apply for an Australian tourist visa renewal, via a Long-stay tourist visa application .

What happens if I stay too long and my Australian tourist visa has expired?

Overstaying your stay with a tourist visa in Australia will result in your becoming an “unlawful non-citizen” – which can lead to detention and removal from the country. Worse, it could interfere with your ability to re-enter Australia on a tourist visa in the future. If you overstay your visa by more than 28 days, you could even become excluded and prevented from re-entering Australia on a tourist visa for as long as 3 years. Don’t do it.

Can I change my Australian visa once I am in the country?

No, you cannot change your visa type , such as an Australia tourist visa multiple entry, once you are in the country. However, you can apply for a further stay via the Long-Stay Tourist Visa, subclass 676.

What are my other options for extending my tourist visa?

Because the consequences of an Australia tourist visa overstay can be so serious, it is critical that you apply for a tourist visa renewal or extension as soon as possible and before your visa has expired . Applying online is fast and convenient.

If you are planning to travel to Australia with a ETA Tourst Visa, you must know that it is not legal to work with an ETA . ETA-visitors have no right to “work”. However, they can do volunteer work or engage in other business activities, such as business meetings, conferences or seminars . Of course, you can stay in Australia on your tourist visa while looking for work, but once you found it you should obtain a different kind of visa in order to legally maintain your work.

However, working on a “tourist visa” in Australia is fairly common – especially for those who wish to work to pay for their holidays. If you want to legally work in Australia during your holiday though you will need a special, dedicated visa – not an ETA. This visa is called “ Work and Holiday Visa ” (often referred to also as “Working Holiday Visa”).

You can do any kind of work or jobs while on a tourist visa in Australia. However, your Work and Holiday Visa must be used within one year of the date it is issued, and it will be active for 12 months from the date you enter the country.

A working holiday visa cannot be extended: if you choose to stay longer, you must apply for a new visa. Additionally, you cannot bring dependent children or other family members with you, and you must pay taxes from anything you earn during your tourist visa working days.

The cost for a work and holiday tourist visa is of $ 625.00 as of 2024, but additional costs may also arise, including costs for police certificates, biometrics and health checks. Processing time can take from 13 to 22 days but may take longer if more information is needed or for verification purposes. Passports and visas

Your passport is your most important travel document. All Australian citizens must have a valid passport before leaving Australia and maintain a valid passport while overseas.

Be aware that countries have different passport validity requirements. Check the expiry date of your Australian passport before you travel. Some countries won’t let you enter unless your passport is valid for six months from when you plan to leave that country. Carry extra passport photos just in case something happens to your passport and you need to replace it while you're away.

Find out early what visas you need by contacting the foreign mission (embassy, high commission or consulate) of the countries you intend to visit. Some countries have specific entry and exit requirements, including compulsory vaccinations. A tourist visa may not allow you to undertake any form of work—including voluntary or unpaid activities. Check the visa requirements of countries you might be transiting. Contact details for foreign missions are in the White Pages or on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website .

• a visa doesn't guarantee entry to a foreign country

Research your destination

Find out about the political, cultural and economic environment of your destination so you'll know what to expect. Consult the travel advice for your destination and either purchase a guide book or search the internet for recent information. Talk with family or friends who are familiar with the countries you'll be visiting. You could also consult the country briefs available on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website to learn more about your destinations.

If you're concerned the airline may question your fitness to fly, get a letter from your doctor confirming you're fit for air travel.

If you have a disability, call your airline to find out about services such as shuttle services, seating arrangements and special meals.

If you need to carry medication , needles or syringes with you, get a letter from your doctor saying why you need them. Seek early advice from your airline on how to comply with enhanced airport and air travel security regulations.

Centrelink payments

There are rules about how leaving Australia affects Centrelink payments or concession cards. You should check the Services Australia website to find out how any absence from Australia could affect your payment.

If you're travelling independently, book your accommodation before you get there.

Keep in touch

Keep in touch with your family or friends. Many travellers use email or their Australian mobile phones to keep in touch. Contact your Australian mobile phone provider to arrange global roaming before you travel. If you want to minimise global roaming costs, check if pre-paid mobile phone services are available in your planned destinations and purchase a local SIM card.

Protect yourself against loss and theft by carrying minimal luggage. When you're overloaded, you make yourself more vulnerable to bag snatchers and pickpockets. Secure your credit cards and passports in a money belt or under your clothes.

If you're travelling to the USA, make sure you understand its specific airline baggage lock requirements. Information is available from the US Department of Homeland Security .

Money and valuables

You can take a number of steps to protect yourself against loss and theft of money and valuables.

• Organise a variety of ways of accessing your money overseas, such as debit and credit cards, traveller's cheques and cash.
• Check with your bank if your ATM card will work overseas.
• Register with your bank the period you expect to be travelling.
• Never let your credit card out of your sight.
• Make two photocopies of valuable documents such as your passport, tickets, travel insurance policy, visas and credit cards. Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave the other with someone at home.
• Take your senior citizens card. It may be recognised in some places overseas.

Staying healthy overseas

Think about your health needs before you travel.

Make an appointment with your doctor or travel clinic for a basic check-up at least eight weeks before you leave. Find out if you destinations require any vaccinations or health checks.

Be cautious of purchasing and taking medication overseas without consulting a qualified medical professional.

If you're taking medicines overseas, we recommend you:

• discuss with your doctor the medication you'll need to take
• carry a letter from your doctor detailing what the medication is, how much you'll be taking with you, and that it's for your personal use
• leave the medication in its original packaging so it's clearly labelled with your name and dosage instructions

If you're travelling with medication, make sure it's legal in the countries you're visiting. Do this by contacting the relevant embassy or consulate in Australia before leaving home.

If you need to travel with large quantities of medication, it's good practice to separate the quantity between your luggage, in case bags go missing. Keep medication in the original, labelled container to avoid customs problems.

If it’s allowed in the countries you're visiting, it may be preferable to carry your own needles and syringes for injections. If you buy needles and syringes overseas, make sure they’re sealed and sterile.

Take enough medication to cover the length of your trip. If you need to buy it locally, be careful not to buy imitation or counterfeit products. Packaging and labelling may be similar to that in Australia, but the strength and active ingredients can vary from country to country. Always check the strength of a medication with a doctor.

Unless it’s for your personal use or an immediate family member travelling with you, it’s against the law to carry or send Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medication overseas. Penalties include a fine up to $5,000 and two years in prison if you break the law.

Prescription glasses

If you wear glasses, take a spare pair and/or a copy of the prescription. That way you can replace them more easily if lost or broken.

Reciprocal health care agreements

Australia has reciprocal health care agreements with Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

These agreements can cover or subsidise some emergency medical costs. This is usually for urgent treatment that can't wait until you get home.

Each country with an agreement decides what they'll cover or subsidise. The treating doctor determines if your condition is a 'medical necessity'. We can't intervene in their processes or policies.

It's important to remember that healthcare agreements are no substitute for travel insurance . They won't cover you if a doctor recommends medical evacuation back to Australia.

Department of Veterans' Affairs

If you receive a pension from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), advise DVA of your plans to travel overseas before you leave. Ask about the possible implications for your pension and healthcare entitlements. A DVA 'gold card' or DVA healthcare card does not guarantee that DVA will cover your medical costs while you're overseas. Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

• Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
• Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.

You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

Australia Visitor Visa Requirements

Who requires a Visitor Visa?

Australia Visitor Visa is REQUIRED for all nationalities to enter Australia as a tourist, except for the below.

• New Zealand passport holders
• Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
• eVisitor Visa
• Those transiting in Australia for less than 72 hours and can get a Transit visa .

Documents required

To support your application, you can attach as many as 60 documents online. You don’t have to attach that many but the more documents you provide, the better your chances of approval.

You have to satisfy the Home Office that:

• You are who you say you are
• You are a genuine visitor who will not overstay or work illegally
• You are of good character and not have a criminal record
• You won’t be a burden to Australia’s healthcare system

To do this, attach as many of these documents as you can :

Identity documents

• Valid passport (must be valid for the duration of the stay)
• Valid National ID card (if from a country that issues them)
• marriage or divorce certificate;
• change of name documents;
• documents that show other names you have been known by
• Residence Permit/Visa (if residence and citizenship differ)
• One passport-size photo

Genuine visitor documents

• Itemized personal bank statements for the last 3 months. Aim to have at least 5000 AUD in your bank account. The money cannot be deposited suddenly and inexplicably – it should be from legitimate sources and savings over time.
• Tax returns
• Credit card statements
• their relationship to you
• the purpose of your visit and length of stay
• if you will be staying with them
• Proof of their funds (if they will be paying for your stay)
• Your plans or travel itinerary while in Australia  
• a letter from your employer stating you plan to return to your job
• proof that you study at a school, college or university in your home country
• proof that you have immediate family members in your home country
• proof that you own a house or other major assets in your home country;
• Confirmed return flight ticket;
• Health Insurance

At a later date, you may be required to obtain and submit the following:

• Medical Certificate
• Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

All non-English documents (except for police certificates) must be translated into English and all documents’ copies (both original and translations) must be certified.

Photo requirements

You need one passport-size digital photo for the Visitor Visa application. The photo must meet the following requirements. 

• Taken in the last 6 months
• Showing your head and shoulders against a plain background
• Neutral facial expression with mouth closed, eyes open, and looking at the camera
• Religious head coverings are allowed but must not obscure the face
• Piercing is allowed but must not cause any reflections or shadows

There is no official guidance for the size and resolution of pictures uploaded online but the file type must be JPG. You will get to move the photo to position your face within a frame.

As long as the picture is clear, crisp, and not excessively big, it will be accepted.

Visitor visa fee

The Australian Tourist Visa application fee is 190 AUD , payable online.

Processing time

Australian immigration reports that 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% are processed in 21 days . These periods start after you submit your biometrics (if required).

How to apply

You must apply for your tourist visa online through the Immi Portal. Applying on paper is not possible for the visitor visa anymore. Follow the below steps:

• Go to the ImmiAccount portal and create an account
• Click on “New application” and pick “Visitor Visa (600)”.
• Enter your personal information, passport details, employment details and financial information
• Upload your documents such as passport, photo, etc.
• Pay the required visa fee
• Submit the application

The Visitor Visa is part of Australia’s biometrics program. If you apply for a Visitor Visa from any of the below countries, regardless of your nationality, you must give your biometrics.

If you apply from one of these countries, you will receive an email informing you that you need to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) to have your biometrics collected. The biometrics are usually a face photo and fingerprint scan.

You must complete the biometrics procedure within 14 days of getting this email otherwise your application becomes void without a refund!

AABCs are typically managed by VFS Global. They charge a service fee for biometric collection. This fee depends on AABC and the country you are applying from.

For example, the biometric service at AABC in Dubai, UAE is AED 109.17. The biometric service fee at AABC in Manila, Philippines is PHP 557.

How to schedule biometric appointment?

Within 24 hours of applying for your Visitor Visa, you will receive an email with a biometric request letter from Home Affairs. Follow these steps to schedule your biometric appointment.

Find the nearest ABCC to you and follow the prompts to schedule your biometric appointment.

How to attend biometric appointment?

Follow the below steps to attend your biometric appointment at an AABC.

• Arrive at the AABC at least 15 minutes before your appointment time
• Original passport
• Biometric appointment confirmation
• Biometric fee receipt and
• Biometric request letter received in the email from Home Affairs
• Your facial photo is taken and your 10 fingertips are scanned

What if you can’t attend your appointment?

If you can’t make an appointment, you can reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled appointment date and time. You can reschedule up to 2 times.

What if you miss your appointment?

If you miss your scheduled appointment, you will lose the fee paid as the biometric fee is nonrefundable. You will also have to wait 24 hours to schedule a new appointment.

How to track status

You will receive the status of your application in your email. You can also track the status of the visa in your ImmiAccount.

How to download approved visa

When your Visitor Visa is approved, you will receive a grant letter in your email from Home Affairs. The grant letter is your Visitor Visa.

The Visitor visa is electronically linked to your passport, so you don’t need to download or print your Visitor Visa.

If you’re ever asked to show any proof, you can use the Grant Notification you received in your email. You can also download it from your ImmiAccount under “Visa Grant Details”.

How to check the validity of your Visitor Visa

The expiration date of your Australia eVisitor visa is indicated as “Must not arrive after” on the visa letter. If you lost your grant letter or don’t have a copy of your Visitor Visa, you can check the validity details on the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal by using either your Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number.

Procedure at the border

The Visitor Visa is digitally attached to your passport so you don’t need to print anything. When you enter Australia, simply present your passport and be ready to answer a few basic questions about your visit.

Eligible passport holders can use the Smart Gates for faster arrival and departure procedures.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay. 

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

Working Holiday Visas

Australia's Working Holiday Maker program allows visitors aged under 30 (or 35 in certain cases) who hold a passport from a participating country to travel and work in Australia. Working holiday visas are valid for one year, or up to three years if you meet certain conditions.

Visa requirements

Health requirements and panel physicians.

Australia enjoys some of the best health standards in the world. To maintain these standards, most visa applicants are required to meet certain minimum health standards in order to be granted a visa. We refer to this as meeting 'the health requirement'.

See the department's list of office locations to find  information on panel physicians in your location that have been approved to perform medical examinations on visa applicants outside Australia.

Character requirements

Everyone who wants to enter Australia must be of good character and will be assessed against the character requirements. Applicants must declare all recorded offences to us. If you do not declare an offence and we become aware of this it might have a negative impact on your application.

For information on how character is assessed, visit the Department of Home Affairs website .

If requested, you must provide a police certificate from each country where you have lived for a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years, since turning 16 years of age.

Applicants currently living in the United States may be requested to obtain both a State-wide police clearance from each State of residence in the USA during the last 12 months AND an FBI clearance in their current name and any other name they are known by or have previously been known by.

If applicable, you must also provide:

• court papers listing the outcomes and dispositions of any charges listed on the FBI clearance, US State police clearance, or other police certificates/clearances
• any document(s) associated with your arrest, time served and release documents
• a written statement from you detailing each arrest/offence/conviction.

Obtaining an FBI clearance (US citizens and permanent residents)

US citizens and permanent residents can apply directly to the FBI or to one of four department approved channelers listed below to obtain an Identity History Summary Check.

• National Credit Reporting
• National Background Check Inc  
• Telos Identity Management Solutions

Obtaining an FBI clearance (US temporary residents and visitors)

US temporary residents and visitors can apply directly to the FBI to obtain an Identity History Summary Check.

Obtaining a state police clearance

Apply to the relevant state police department. Please ensure the clearance is requested for all names you have been known by.

The type of certificate issued depends on individual state procedures.

The Australian Government has incorporated the collection of biometrics into the visa application process outside Australia.

Applicants lodging visa applications in selected locations, regardless of nationality, may be requested to attend an AVAC or an ABCC in person to lodge their application and/or provide their biometrics.

No, there is no age limit.

How many people can join to an Australian Tourist visa?

Nobody can join to an Australian Tourist visa. Every person, who wants to travel, needs to apply for a visa themselves.

Is there an obligatory medical examination for the Australian Tourist visa?

Under 75 years old the medical examination is only obligatory if the applicant has a severe illness or is undergoing continuous medical treatment.

If the applicant is over 75 years old the medical examination is obligatory.

Do I need to obtain a health insurance if I go to Australia with a Tourist visa?

No, you are not required to have a health insurance with this visa. But we strongly recommend having a health insurance if you are going to Australia.

Yes, you are required to prove your financial background to apply for this visa.

How can I prove that I possess the required financial coverage?

The easiest way to prove your financial background is with your own bank account. The required amount can be in any currency, the official of the Australian government will convert the sum on the account into Australian dollars at the current exchange rate at the time of the evaluation of the visa.

What can I do if I do not possess the required financial coverage?

The person who financially supports you or invites you to Australia can prove the required financial background instead of you.

How long does the evaluation of the Australian Tourist visa usually take?

According to the data of the Australian Department of Home Affairs the evaluation of the Australian Tourist visa is between 2–27 days 90% of the time. Based on our experience it usually does not take longer than that.

Do I Need a Health Examination for an Australian Tourist Visa?

For a Visitor visa (Subclass 600), you may undergo medical examinations if you answer “Yes” to any of the questions under health declarations. Otherwise, if you answer “No” to all questions, you may not undergo medical examinations (see screenshot below).

Specifically, you will undergo the following tests if you fall in any of the following situations:

An email will be sent to you by the Department of Home Affairs instructing you to arrange for a medical examination within the specified period.

The email will contain a letter specifying the type of examination you need to undertake and a HAP ID. You will then need to bring this letter to any of the following accredited panel physicians:

• Nationwide Health Systems AUX Inc. with offices in Makati, Davao, Cebu, and Baguio
• St. Luke’s Medical Extension Clinic – Global City in Taguig

Has anyone come across new rules for over 75 travelling to Australia for a 5 week holiday, my mother has been told over 75s now need a medical at a designated medical place, she is travelling from the UK?? Is this now the procedure?? Thanks  

Is it a subclass 600 visa she'd be applying for? If so, that's correct. See: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1163i.pdf Looks like she needs a medical exam, but not a chest xray or blood test.  

Thanks for that link, maybe she can go for the 651 visa....no one seems to be able to give her a straight answer when she phone immigration etc. But pretty clear on that form that a 600 needs a medical.

Each state and territory determines its own quarantine rules. You should check requirements for specific states and territories .

Passport validity requirements

For entry into Australia, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. If you’re transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Visa requirements

British citizens can usually get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

• eVisitor visa . There is no visa application charge or service fee
• Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via the iOS App or Android App . There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 may apply

Working holiday visa

Thousands of Britons travel to Australia each year on a working holiday visa and the vast majority have no issues. Working conditions, accommodation and medical facilities are generally of a good standard.

Dual nationals

Quarantine of goods

Australia has strict quarantine rules to keep out pests and diseases that could affect plant, animal or human health.

You must fill out an Incoming Passenger Card and either:

• declare any risk goods including food, animal products and plant material (including wooden articles)
• dispose of any risk goods in the bins at the airport or sea port

All luggage is x-rayed on arrival. Any items of concern are further inspected, treated and if necessary confiscated and destroyed. You can be heavily fined for breaches of quarantine regulations.

You will also be asked to declare whether you have ‘visited a rural area, or been in contact with, or near, farm animals outside Australia in the past 30 days’.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil’s government extended exemptions to tourist visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Australia and Canada until April 2025, extending a program aimed at boosting tourism that had been scheduled to end Wednesday.

The decision, issued by Brazilian presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Relations late Tuesday, marks the third time Brazil has delayed the visa requirement since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023.

His predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, exempted the countries from visas as a means to boost tourism — although all three countries continued to demand visas from Brazilians.

That went against the South American country’s tradition of requiring visas from travelers based on the principle of reciprocity and equal treatment, and prompted Lula’s Foreign Ministry to say it would scrap the exemptions.

“Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption from visiting visas, without reciprocity, to other countries,” the ministry said at the time, while noting that the government stood ready to negotiate visa waiver agreements on a reciprocal basis. It did reach a deal with Japan to ease travel provisions.

The decision to maintain exemptions for the three countries is important for boosting tourism in Brazil, notably from the U.S., Brazil’s official tourism board Embratur said in a statement Tuesday.

Official data shows that nearly 670,000 Americans visited Brazil in 2023, making the U.S. the second largest country of origin after neighboring Argentina.

The government initially postponed the reinstatement of the visa requirement in October, then again in January. At the time, the government said it was still finalizing a new visa system and wanted to avoid implementing it close to the high season, mainly during the New Year’s celebrations and Carnival festivities in February, which attract tens of thousands of tourists.
