• Sankat Mochan Temple was founded by Tulsidas who was the author of the Ramcharitmanasa.

Durga Kund Mandir

• Durga Kund is also known as the Durga temple is situated in the holy city of Varanasi.

•  Durga Mandir was constructed in the 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore. 
• Durga Mandir is situated on the Sankat Mochan Road, adjacent to Durga Kund, 250 meters north of Tulsi Manas Mandir, 700 meters north-east of Sankat Mochan Mandir. 
• Durga Mandir is 1.3 kilometres far away from the main BHU gate.
• Next to the temple, is a kund (pond) which was earlier connected to the river Ganges.
• It is believed that the existing icon of the goddess was not made by a man but appeared on its own in the temple.

Tulsi Manas Mandir

• Tulsi Manas Mandir is one of the holiest and most famous temples of Varanasi.
• Tulsi Manas Mandir is located on the banks of the Tulsi ghat.
• Tulsi Manas Temple has great historical and cultural importance since the Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas was originally written at this place by Hindu poet-saint, Tulsidas.

• Tulsi Manas Mandir is situated on the Sankat Mochan road.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

• One of the oldest and the most sacred ghats in the holy city of Varanasi is Dashashwamedh Ghat.
• This place is most famous for its Ganga Arti ( a holy fire ritual), which is an elaborate and lively ceremony that takes place at dusk every day.
• The arti lasts about 45 minutes.
• The hour-long ritual can be watched from the Dashashwamedh ghat or boats moored at the river bank.
• The name ‘ Dashashwamedh’ means the place where Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses.
• It is also said that Bajirao Peshwa I had the ghat reconstructed in 1740 AD.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

• The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most famous and one of the holiest temple situated in Varanasi.
• It is located on the banks of the river Ganga and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
• Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, or Jyotirlingams, the holiest of Shiva Temples.

Ramnagar Fort

• Ramnagar Fort is said to be the ancestral home of the Maharaja of Banaras.

The lively atmosphere of the Dasaswamedh Ghat makes it one of the best places to visit in Varanasi. This tourist attraction is a swirling hodgepodge of flower sellers touting bright blossoms, boat operators hawking rides along the Ganges River, and sadhus (holy men) with face paint. You can spend hours people-watching in this area during the day.

Hindu priests put on the Ganga Aarti every night at the Dasaswamedh Ghat, starting at around 7pm. Donning saffron-hued robes, the priests spread out plates of flower petals and other offerings and blow a conch shell to signal the start of the spiritual ceremony.

Thousands of tourists gather to watch the priests chant and wave tiered plates of sandalwood-scented incense in intricate patterns for about 45 minutes. It's an extravagant sight and one of the top things to do here.

Hot tip: Get to the ghat at least a couple of hours early if you want to beat the crowds and score a great spot for the show. You can also get incredible views from boats along the river or from shop balconies above the ghat.

Assi Ghat's star attraction is a Shiva lingam (phallic representation of the Hindu deity) beneath a sacred fig tree. Feeling a little stiff from traveling? Swing by Assi Ghat at sunrise, when you can get your downward-facing dog on with dozens of others during free morning yoga classes accompanied by live music every day. Tourists can also see another Ganga Aarti performance here in the evening, which is slightly smaller and more intimate than the one at Dasaswamedh Ghat. It typically starts around 6:30pm.

Plumes of smoke swirl toward the sky at Manikarnika Ghat. No, it's not from a factory — it's from the perpetual cremations that happen on this ghat. Hindus believe that Manikarnika Ghat is one of the most auspicious places for the departed to reach moksha (emancipation from the cycle of spiritual rebirth). The funeral pyre at this ghat burns 24/7, and the flame that feeds it is believed to have been lit for centuries. Roughly 100 cremations take place at this site every day.

Priests or guides frequently offer to lead tourists through the fascinating ghat; however, some can be aggressive in their demands for money. You may see doms (members of an untouchable caste) carrying cloth-wrapped bodies on makeshift stretchers, along with piles of firewood stacked up, ready to feed the pyre.

You may also be offered the chance to see a cremation up close — for a fee, of course. While profound, the experience is not for the faint of heart, nor is it a tourist attraction in the traditional sense. Know your limits; be respectful; and avoid taking photos of the funerals, mourners, and the departed.

Hot tip: If you're interested in the ritualistic cremations, but can't stomach the idea of seeing them up close, consider passing by Manikarnika Ghat on a boat tour along the Ganges River . The distance dampens the effect while still giving tourists a sense of what's happening in this important place.

Hinduism certainly has a stronghold on Varanasi, but Buddhism has a major presence less than 12 kilometers away in the village of Sarnath . Here, you'll find the Dhamek Stupa, a massive stone and brick structure that's 43.6 meters tall and 28 meters in diameter. The stupa was built more than 1,500 years ago as a replacement for a structure that dated back to 249 BCE.

The devout believe that the Buddha came to Dhamek Stupa to give his first sermon, which revealed the Eightfold Path after he achieved enlightenment. Take a look at the elegant carvings of birds, people, and flowers that cover the walls of the stupa as you wander around the attraction.

Sarnath also has plenty of other tourist places that make it a worthwhile day trip destination from Varanasi. Check out the Chaukhandi Stupa (a Buddhist shrine that dates back to at least the 6th century), then make your way to the Sarnath Museum to see the Lion Capital of Ashoka , a sculpture that used to sit atop the Ashoka Pillar in 250 BCE and became the National Emblem of India in 1950.

Round out the day with sightseeing at the peaceful Tibetan Temple, located near the main market, before making your way back to Varanasi.

Spiritual activities around Varanasi aren't solely confined to the ghats. Just a five-minute walk west of Assi Ghat , the Shri Durga Temple is a popular attraction for Hindus who wish to pay tribute to the goddess Durga. The temple's nickname, "Monkey Temple," gives you a clue about the creatures you might find swinging about in this area. You may also see a couple of graceful swans floating on the pool of water outside the temple.

There are few destinations in India without a fort, and Varanasi is no exception. About 14 kilometers from the city center, you'll find Ramnagar Fort.

The 18th-century sandstone fort and palace is no longer used as a defensive structure but instead houses a quirky museum brimming with vintage automobiles, elaborate hookahs, antique weapons, sedan chairs decked out in jewels, and a one-of-a-kind astronomical clock that's more than 150 years old.

After enjoying an archeological treasure hunt at the museum, check out the fort's temples, one of which honors Veda Vyasa, author of the Mahabharata and other important Hindu epics.

While not as active as other riverfront spots in Varanasi, Shivala Ghat is a pleasant place to visit if you're looking for some peace and quiet along the Ganges.

The lack of crowds at the ghat makes it easier to respectfully observe the devout doing their ritualistic dips in the holy river and families gathering for prayers and tea in the morning. Don't be surprised if you wind up sharing the space with water buffalo, which are known to hang about in the area. You can also see a palace built by Nepalese king Sanjay Vikram Shah in the 19th century.

It's also worth devoting a few hours to wander the maze-like alleyways leading to Shivala Ghat. The densely packed neighborhood offers a glimpse at what everyday life is like for locals in Varanasi.

Situated on the banks of the Assi River, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple draws thousands of visitors a day, all eager to make an offering of sweets and flowers to the Hindu god Hanuman.

Legend has it that this temple was constructed exactly where Hindu saint and poet Goswami Tulsidas had a vision of the monkey god. Speaking of monkeys, keep your eye out for the mischievous creatures who are regularly spotted bouncing around the temple.

Hot tip: April or May can be a particularly great time to visit this Varanasi attraction. That's when the temple hosts its annual "Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh," a festival of classical music and dance recitals held over a series of five to six days. Performers come from all over the world to take part in the nearly 100-year-old event.

Visiting Banaras Hindu University Park – Varanasi

The large park that is Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi India, contains many different things to see as a tourist and it all stems from a Hindu legend. Contained within the Banaras Hindu University is the most prominent Hindu temple in Varanasi. Hindus across India and abroad visit this particular Lord Shiva temple to pray for the well-being of their families and eternal peace. As tourists, we bare witness to some of these prayers and get to explore the grounds of this religious university.

What should you bring? – I recommend bringing a bag for your shoes for when you take them off, unless you aren’t concerned about the potential for them to be stolen and water.

If you make your way to Varanasi the key thing to see is the Ganges River. If you have additional time, then definitely make your way to Banaras Hindu University. The feel of the University Park is quite different than being on the Ganges River, there are more structures to explore and more of the culture to experience.

What is it like to visit Banaras Hindu University?

Entering Banaras Hindu University Park

Expect it to be warm, the weather in Varanasi is often both hot and humid! Despite that, when you first enter the Banaras Univesity Park, you will enter through a wide pink entranceway with a just a peak beyond the gates to the fabulous Shri Kashi Viswanath temple .

Along the sides of the entrance are stores where religious goods are sold as well as food and drink.

Vendors at Banaras Hindu University

One such vendor is pictured here. At first glance this person is merely selling flowers. However in the Hindu religion flowers are offering to the gods in hope that they will grant grant good health, wealth and prosperity to the person who puts it on the alter.

Other vendors sold Hanai tattoos, fake jewels that you can stick on your body, bells and more.

I also noticed something quite interesting. There was a man making a gigantic soup! I learned that this is something that they do for the poor in Varanasi, they provide free meals to anyone who asks for it. Wow!

Shri Kashi Viswanath Temple

After entering the University, in front of you after a moderately long pink path is Shri Kashi Viswanath Temple.

The architecture of the temple from a distance, along with the colors of the building help it to stand out from anything nearby,

Before entering, we had to take off our shoes and walk barefoot into the temple.

Why is Shri Kashi Viswanath Temple Important?

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva created the original Temple, but over the years the Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to invasions and religious conflicts. People who come to the Ganges River to die , also visit this temple which can liberate devotees from the cycle of birth and death.

As a tourist, inside of the temple there were just a few small rooms that offered shrines – Shiva and others, to pray to and leave offerings for. In fact, devotees come from all over the world to this temple seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva and to participate in religious ceremonies performed at the temple.

Other than the Temple

Outside of the Temple there are other structures as well, each dedicated to a different diety, with a few dedicated to simply feeding the poor. Each provides a small area for worshipers to gather and to present offerings to shrines.

There were other buildings, but most were not open for us to peek into. However, just walking the pilgramage or peole celebrate their religion by turning bells and giving offerings throughout the park was pretty amazing.

Was visiting Banaras Hindu University Park worth it?

For me, yes. I really enjoyed seeing the architecutre of the buildings and walking the holy path that many Hindus before me have walked. I liked seeing and understanding the deities that were represented there and I enjoyed learning about the legend of Lord Shiva creating not only this exact location, but all of Varanasi and I liked the people. This was one of the few places in India where the people were not trying so hard to sell me something.

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is one of the oldest varsities in India. It was founded by renowned social reformer and freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, in 1916, with the assistance of British socialist Dr Annie Besant. The sprawling 1,300-acre main university campus located on the outskirts of Varanasi was built on land donated by the ruler of Kashi. The university counts many freedom fighters, as well as a great number of scholars, artistes and scientists among its alumni. With well-maintained roads, a large temple, an airstrip and several buildings of architectural significance, the university, with a dense green cover, resembles a sub-city. Its wide streets are lined with trees on either side and make for great walking avenues. With accommodation available for over 30,000 students within the main campus, BHU is one of the largest residential universities in Asia. One should visit this campus for its unique buildings and a museum called Bharat Kala Bhavan, which lies within the premises. The museum houses miniature paintings, palm-leaf manuscripts, sculptures and history displays. These highly valuable archives are more than a lakh in number. One can also interact with the locals and students while visiting the campus.

Banaras Hindu University

Banaras Hindu University or BHU is an old public university that is functioning since 1919. It is the largest residential university in Asia , 3rd best university in the country and 10th best university in the world . Although the college has the word ‘Hindu’ in it, it allows students of all creed, religion and ethnicity. Students from foreign lands also study in this university. The main campus of the university spreads over more than 1300 acres of land, which was donated by the last ruler of Varanasi, Kashi Naresh .The South campus covers 2700 acres of land, which includes Agriculture Science Center.

• Bharat Kala Bhavan : An archaeological museum that is famous for ancient Artifacts, wood works, statues and others. There are more than one lakh items in display in this museum.

There is not entry fee for the university. Bharat Kala Bhavan visitors should buy entrance ticket.

Best time to visit the university ?

The university is open throughout the year. Tourists are allowed to visit the university between 10 am and 6 pm. The best time to visit the university is from October to March . The climate will be mild during this period and suits sightseeing.

Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya , a lawyer and independence hero started the university. The plan for the university started in the year of 1911 , foundation for the university started in the year of 1914 and it took two years to complete the university. With the help from Annie Besant , Malviya started the progress and it took several years to gather funds required for the construction. The university was opened in the year of 1919 .

Banaras – It's Way Beyond Just Being The Holy Pilgrimage Place Of India

Radiant beauty of Banaras does not require any meticulous introduction. Not only Indians but people from across different continents understand the value of Banaras in India. I somewhere feel while searching for the cultural beauty of Banaras at Ganga Ghats, we have forgotten to discover the beautiful heritage sides of Banaras. Undoubtedly Ganga Ghats will remain a true mirror reflection to display the cultural beauty of Banaras but there is an equal need to uncover the ancient beauty of Banaras in terms of discovering heritage of Banaras.

My love and my hate towards my hometown are equal. Varanasi was always Banaras for me since my childhood. It never changed for me though people used to correct it saying that it’s Varanasi not Banaras anymore but it was always Banaras for me and will always remain “Bhole Ki Nagari Banaras” for me. I still remember whenever I used to travel by train to Banaras with my family, my mother used to wake me up in the middle of the night and used to give me one coin to throw in the Ganga River. I used to see everyone praying before throwing one rupee coin in the river but I never understood the logic as I was unaware about the value of Ganga River for Hindus.  I used to be more threatened by the thought that What if train falls down in that deep river (Jokes Apart). A divine sound of mantra was enough to guess that now our train has entered in the territory of Banaras.

While exploring the chaotic streets of Banaras, I found that people of Banaras have restricted the discovery of ancient Banaras. Banaras is not only about discovering temples, Ghats and history of Hindu mythology. There is a lot more about Banaras which is only available on internet websites which is a true disappointment. Very few people are aware of these places so Let’s me take you to the beautiful sides of Banaras which I would not call “Unexplored” but yes, there is a need to promote these places as well apart from Ganga Ghats and temples.

I understand the emotional sentiments of Indians where few people feel blessed at Ganga Ghat where as few people feel disappointed with the maintenance of Ganga River. But every city is a mixture of negative and positive tourism. I know it’s sad to see the two acts of human where on one side we worship Ganga and on the contrary we act careless towards the cleanliness of Ganga but high priority has been given to the maintenance of Ganga but it’s equally our duty also to maintain cleanliness. So next time, discover Banaras beyond Ganga Ghats, Temples and religion then you will be able to establish a new perspective about Banaras.

Exploring Moscow as a tourist can be a humbling experience. Everything is just so big. Red Square makes Piazza Navona look like a school playground, you could fit about five of Charles University into the mighty Moscow State University building, and after a trip on the Moscow Metro the London Underground seems like a dainty fairground ride. If you like feeling small, anonymous and insignificant then Moscow is definitely the place for you! Surprisingly, after you've got used to it, it feels quite liberating; and if it's adventure you're after you've come to the right place...

A natural starting point for all but the most maverick sightseer is of course Red Square . This iconic space has witnessed more than its fair share of history and is rich in surrounding attractions. The impressive fortifications of the Kremlin , Russia's seat of power, flanks the whole of one side of the Square, the magnificent GUM shopping centre flanks another, whilst St. Basil's celebrated onion domes are an essential photo opportunity on the South East end and the State Historical Museum stands guard on the North West. Easily enough to occupy anyone for day, Red Square also hosts one of the capital's more bizzare tourist attractions - Lenin's Mausoleum . A must for Commie nostalgia seekers.

If you've exhausted the attractions of 'Krasnaya Ploschad', then just a minute away by foot is another stunning space in the form of Theatre Square. Take in the magnificent Bolshoi Theatre - even better take in a performance! Afterwards head in a South Westerly direction for two more essential sites. The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is second only to the Hermitage in terms of grandeur and style in Russia, whilst the reconstructed Church of Christ the Saviour is a majestic place of worship by the Moskva river, with it's scintillating golden-capped roofs. Venture only a little further for the zany Tsereteli Museum .

Next up on the tourist trail is the area of Kitai Gorod (literally 'China Town') - a thirteenth century trading area just East of the Kremlin, which is today characterised by its narrow streets, courtyards, pretty churches and monasteries and laidback caf, bar and club scene. An oasis of calm in a frenetic city!

A little further from the heart of Moscow, and to the West, is a comparable scenic district - the pedestrianised Old Arbat Street . Once the home of legends such as Pushkin and Tolstoy, today the region around the Arbat is probably the most touristy district in the whole of Moscow. Indeed there is a school of thought that says the area has lost much of its character, however the splendid mansions, swathes of bars and restaurants and the peddling street artists make it well worth a visit. The towering Ministry of Foreign Affairs is found overshadowing the Western end of the street, and a great introduction to Stalin's so-called Seven Sisters - seven huge Soviet skyscrapers and the most prominent features of the Moscow skyline.

Well there's the tip of the iceburg for you, but there's plenty more to see and do in Moscow . The Tretyakov Gallery , Gorky Park , the Patriarchs Ponds and the Cosmonaut Museum are all a metro ride away, whilst of course no trip to the capital is complete with sampling the legendary Moscow nightlife ... Sleaze and all!
