Barça Academy World Cup presented by Allianz returns to the Ciutat Esportiva after three years

The 2022 Barça Academy World Cup presented by Allianz marks the ninth edition of this international tournament, with the most important date on the calendar for every Barça Academy worldwide returning after a two year hiatus enforced by the pandemic. The last time FC Barcelona’s football schools from around the world were able to meet up was in April 2019. 

The meet will see around 1,150 boys and girls aged 6 to 14 years old make the journey to visit FC Barcelona’s facilities. This ninth edition, taking place from April 11 to 14 , will be played exclusively on the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper football pitches.

There will be 104 teams from 15 countries in total, playing 352 games across the four days of the competition. This 2022 edition will see teams representing 26 Barça Academy and Barça Academy Camps from around the world. 

This ninth edition will see debuts for 8 Barça Academies, namely Barça Academy PRO Miami, Barça Academy Orlando, Barça Academy CDMX, Barça Academy Budapest, Barça Academy Jordan, Barça Academy Yokohama, Barça Academy Riyadh, and Barça Academy Camps in France. 

The Barça Academy World Cup presented by Allianz begins at 10:30 CEST on Monday, April 11, with the opening ceremony in Estadi Johan Cruyff. The first matches kick-off afterwards at 12:00 CEST, featuring four age groups: under-8s, under-10s, under-12s, and under-14s. The tournament finals will run from 10:30 CEST on Thursday, April 14 on pitch 7 of the Ciutat Esportiva, followed by the closing ceremony and trophy presentations in the Estadi Johan Cruyff (13:30 CEST). 

The competition can be followed via the official tournament app as usual, available for download for Android and IOS, with over 10 hours of live match feeds via Barça TV and Barça TV+ , plus the Barça Academy social networks, who will also show them worldwide.

The America’s Cup yacht race is held every four years in a location determined by the previous winner. It is the oldest continuously contested sporting event in the world. When Team New Zealand defeated Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Italy in 2021, it was expected that the race would return to the home waters of Team New Zealand in Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand, – but the worldwide pandemic and New Zealand’s strict protocols have placed the race in Barcelona, Spain.

Barcelona to host the America’s Cup in 2024

Sport. The city has been chosen by the Emirates Team New Zealand, the winning team from the last edition in Auckland (New Zealand) in 2021.

The city has been chosen by the Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), the winner of the last event in Auckland (New Zealand), which has the rights to organise the 37th edition. This will be the first time that the oldest international competition in the world includes a Women’s America’s Cup.

Decisive factors in the choice of Barcelona for this event include the way the city is backing the blue economy and the transformation at the Olympic Port , the quality of its facilities, the diversity of spaces for competition, the current infrastructures and those in the pipeline, its experience in organising major sports events and its nautical tradition and education and leisure options. The competition will have an important economic impact for the city, estimates putting the figure at between 900 and 1,000 million dollars.

Sustained economic impact and tech innovation

The return of the America’s Cup goes much further than the competition days. During the two years before the regatta, some 2,500 people from sports teams and the organising body will spend months in the city to prepare for the event and invest in their boats to adapt them to the local conditions.

The competition represents a major boost for the emerging nautical innovation and tech sector , particularly with regard to renewable energies. In parallel to the preparations for the event, the Hidrogen project will be carried out to develop green hydrogen motors for the teams’ support boats, which must be propelled using this sustainable source of energy.

Public-private collaboration

Barcelona’s candidacy to host this major sports event was jointly prepared by the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Port de Barcelona and Barcelona & Partners, the investment agency for Barcelona Global.

Hosting the 37th America’s Cup is yet another example of Barcelona becoming consolidated as a venue for leading international events , such as the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the ISE, the main global congress for the audio-visual sector being held in the city for the first time this spring, and the World Capital of Architecture, also in 2024.

When is the America’s Cup going to be hosted in Barcelona?

The celebration of the 37th America’s Cup is planned to be taking place between August and October 2024, although the training and first series will start in 2023, nevertheless Barcelona is already getting ready for organising this competition.

Port Vell in the city centre will be the base port for all the teams.

Event’s setup

The 37th America’s Cup will be divided in several races concluding with the Match in October. The preliminary regattas will be the warm up before the Challenger Selection Series. It is in this part where the final contestants will qualify for competing against the Defender for the final prize. In this edition, both the Women’s America’s Cup and the Youth America’s Cup will compete at the highest level, paving the way for the next generations of sailors.

Preliminary Regattas

There are up to three programmed preliminary regattas, the two first ones in the AC40 class and the last one, in Barcelona, in the AC75 class. The details of the rules, scores and conditions will be revealed closer to the date of the race.

Challenger Selection Series

September 2024

The Challenger Selection Series will determine what team will confront the current champion, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the America’s Cup Match. Consisting of a first phase, the Round Robin (league system) and a final phase. Depending on the number of contestants and the available time, Round Robin will be a simple or a double round. The two first teams will qualify for the final stage The winner will be the first Challenger to achieve a minimum of 6 points on the final stage.

America’s Cup Match

Starting on October 12, 2024.

In October 2024, the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand will face the Challenger Selection Series winner in a 13 regattas Match. Each regatta will be a match race between the two teams. Each regatta’s winner will add a point to their score The first team to get seven points will become the 37th America’s Cup Defender.

Youth & Women America’s Cup

September – October 2024

The Youth and Women’s America’s Cup will take place at the same location as the other regattas, along Barcelona’s coast line, during the final stages of the Challenger Selection Series and the start of the America’s Cup Match.

Both regattas will be contested between 12 teams divided in two groups of six for an initial fleet regatta. The first group will be formed by the teams competing in the America’s Cup. The second team will be formed by non directly involved nautical clubs that comply with the 37th America’s Cup rules of participation.

Both groups will participate in a series of 6 to 9 fleet regattas. The three best contestants of each group will get through to the final stage, consisting in 3 to 4 fleet regattas. Only the two best teams of this competition will reach the match-race to determine the absolute champion of their category.

Both competitions will be undertaken by a fleet of six monotype AC40s provided by the America’s Cup teams.

Opposite to what you would have thought, the name of this competition is not related to the continent where it was born, but to the name of the ship that won the first edition of this event. The first America’s Cup was celebrated in London on the 22nd of August 1881 due to the Great Exposition.

The America’s ship owner, John Cox Stevens, donated the trophy, a silver vase, to the New York’s yacht club with a requirement; that an international competition was created in the shape of a regatta and that the prize was that same trophy.

The event is programmed to take place during September and October 2024

All eyes will be on the sea, but for the duration of the regattas all the city will be focused on this sport event; if you are planning on following the races from the sea, you can choose some of the options we offer at Boat Trip, where the starting point will be el Port Olimpic. Also, Port Vell will be hosting all the big teams involved, and the area will be open for fans to visit and check out the boats that will be participating.

Currently, Emirates Team New Zealand is the holder of the trophy. This team will be based next to the press and the America’s Cup offices in the port.

Welcome to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup taking place between August and October 2024 in the beating heart of beautiful Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of the most visited cities on planet Earth. Situated around Port Vell and along the beach to Port Olímpic, the sailing world has made Barcelona their home for what promises to be one of the most intense America’s Cups in the event’s 174-year history.

WHAT IS THE AMERICA'S CUP: THE RACE WITH NO SECOND PLACE

It is the oldest international sporting trophy – dating back to 1851 – and stands as one of the hardest sporting endeavours. The New York Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, held the trophy for 132 years before losing it in 1983 to Australia. Since then, the Cup has only been won by teams from the United States, Switzerland, and New Zealand. The current Defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

WHERE: BARCELONA, CATALONIA, SPAIN

“Like a jewel in the sun” was how Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury described Barcelona in their famous song about the city. The cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region–known worldwide for its art, architecture and vibrancy–is shining even brighter as preparations are well underway to welcome the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup and its teams. All the teams’ bases are located within the Port Vell area and surrounded by the America’s Cup Race Village where tens of thousands of spectators can be accommodated daily. The racecourse, just outside the port entrance breakwaters, is set in front of significant fan zones, beach viewing platforms and a hospitality area to provide the perfect vista.

WHEN: AUGUST – OCTOBER 2024

The Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Barcelona official opening ceremony will be held in Barcelona on the 22nd of August 2024. The final Preliminary Regatta and the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) will follow, leading up to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Match starting on the 12th of October 2024. During 2023 and early 2024, three preliminary events will be held in Vilanova i La Geltrú, Jeddah, and Barcelona. In June 2023, all teams set up their bases and are training in Barcelona. Further details and race schedules will be published in due course.

WHO’S RACING: Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but some strong competition is coming for them. INEOS Britannia, the ‘Challenger of Record’ from the United Kingdom, are in charge of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) to decide who will race against Emirates Team New Zealand for the trophy. The unique format of the Cup sees the Defender of the trophy automatically entitled to race in the final Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Match whereas the Challengers will undertake a series to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. The additional confirmed entries are: Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France.

WHAT BOATS: AC75 AND AC40

The AC75s are the pinnacle of foiling monohull yachts. Created for the 36th America’s Cup, they are a technological leap ahead of typical yachts as Formula 1 is to your daily driver. With foils that lift them out of the water and enable the yachts to generate so much momentum that they sail 4x faster than the wind.

For the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, the second generation of the AC75s will be even faster with wider foils and refinements all over. Eight crew will be aboard and some of the finest sailing talent will be charged with racing them.

The AC40s, meanwhile, are the boats used for the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's America’s Cup events and as training vessels for the main teams competing in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Smaller but no less potent, with a four-person crew, these pocket-rockets were launched to much fanfare in September 2022, and their performance has been astonishing.

Event Format

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona will comprise several events that will eventually culminate in the October 2024’s Match. The Preliminary Regattas will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series), which decides who moves on and faces the Defender for the ultimate prize. The very best female and youth athletes from around the world will be thrust into America’s Cup level racing for the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup events, paving the pathway to the future of the America’s Cup itself.

LOUIS VUITTON CUP: SEPTEMBER 2024

The Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selections Series) will determine which team will face the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match.

The Louis Vuitton Cup will comprise of a double Round Robin stage and a Semi-Final stage, followed by a two-boat Final. The top four teams will race in a first-to-five-points Semi-Final, with the two winners advancing to the Final Match Race. The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the team to first score seven points, will face Emirates Team New Zealand, the Defender of the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup. 

LOUIS VUITTON 37TH AMERICA'S CUP MATCH: STARTS 12 OCTOBER 2024

The America’s Cup is the race with no second place. Either you win or you lose, and it has been like this for over 170 years.

In October 2024 the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand will face the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) in a 13-race Match. Each race will be a match race between the two teams. The winner of each race scores one point, the loser scores no points. The first team to score seven points will become the Defender of the 38th America’s Cup.

HOW TO WATCH

The America’s Cup Race Village is where you want to be in the middle of the action and experience the event's buzz off the water. The Race Village is completely FREE throughout all America's Cup events, and it will be located in Port Vell along Moll de la Fusta, connecting people to boats, team bases and events. The beaches between Port Vell and Port Olímpic will allow FREE race viewing for everyone.

There will be no ticketing arrangements and we encourage everyone to come and soak in the unique atmosphere of world-class America’s Cup racing that promises to be fast, furious and very close. Having witnessed the racing live, don’t forget to take a stroll through the Race Village to watch sailor presentations from the main stages as well as food, drink, sponsor and team activities daily.

Barcelona, the host of the 37th America's Cup

We made it happen again! Barcelona will host the 37th America’s Cup, which will be held in 2024 thanks to the candidacy promoted by Barcelona & Partners , our investment attraction agency.

 It was so announced by Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), the winning team of the last edition of America's Cup, celebrated in Auckland (New Zealand) 2021, and which has the organizing rights for the 37th edition of this world reference event.

Once again, we have proven that when public institutions and the private sector come together and work towards a goal, no obstacle cannot be overcome or challenge that cannot be met for a city like ours.

Not without effort, we have lined up the Generalitat de Catalunya , the Barcelona City Council , the Port of Barcelona , and a group of 25 private investors , some of the members of our association, to support the celebration of this world-class sporting event in our city.

America's Cup will promote Barcelona around the world, boost the sustainability and innovation of nautical activities and our economy, and create quality employment and new investment, leaving a great legacy in the city.

America's Cup is expected to have an economic impact in Barcelona of between $900 million and $1 billion. The previous edition, held in Auckland, New Zealand, generated revenues of NZ$832 million, attracting 940 million spectators.

For this prestigious world-class sporting event, some 2,500 people from the sports teams and the organizers will travel to Barcelona, as they will spend many months in the city, organizing the competition. In addition to America's Cup, this edition will also feature a Women's America's Cup regatta, as well as the popular Youth America's Cup regatta.

In parallel to the Barcelona event, the edition will feature the Hydrogen Project, focused on the development of hydrogen engines for the support boats.

When is the America’s Cup?

For 2024, the opening ceremony takes place on August 22. The main event kicks off on the 12th October and you’ll find some smaller events running in June.

It’s very close to the Miró Foundation and The Grec Theatre if you fancy some sightseeing before your trip to the America’s Cup. It is intimate and chic but some rooms are a little compact. Barcelona's Champions League exit sends Atletico Madrid to 2025 Club World Cup in the United States

ZURICH — Barcelona’s exit from the Champions League on Tuesday sent Atletico Madrid to the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in the United States next year.

Europe will have 12 teams at the lucrative monthlong tournament — title winners of the Champions League in the four seasons through this one plus high-ranked teams based on overall results in the competition in this period.

Barcelona began play Tuesday trailing Atletico in the rankings to take the second Club World Cup entry from Spain and lost 4-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the home leg of their quarterfinals. Barcelona was eliminated 6-4 on aggregate score.

Atletico also was eliminated from the Champions League losing 4-2 at Borussia Dortmund, and 5-4 on aggregate, but its Club World Cup place is secure.

Atletico is the 22nd team to qualify for the inaugural 32-team edition of the Club World Cup that will be played in cities across the U.S. from June 15-July 13 next year. The expanded format will be played every four years instead of annually.

FIFA expects to pay tens of millions of dollars in prize money to each team at a tournament that will be without European powers like Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan. Also missing will be Lionel Messi’s current club Inter Miami and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.

In the lineup from Europe are the past three Champions League winners — Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City — plus high-ranked Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter Milan, Porto, Dortmund, Benfica, Juventus and now Atletico.

The last European entry will be either Arsenal, if it wins this Champions League edition, or Salzburg.

The Austrian champion could get in despite being ranked below the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Milan because countries are limited by FIFA to two entries unless they have more than two continental champions.

Three Brazilian teams — Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense — have qualified as Copa Libertadores winners since 2021. Argentina’s storied rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors are likely to qualify as high-ranked teams in South America’s quota of six entries.

Seattle Sounders and Mexican teams Leon and Monterrey will be joined by another team from the CONCACAF region. The Champions Cup final is on June 2. Another U.S. team should qualify as part of a Club World Cup tradition to include the host nation’s champion.

In Asia, Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan are in. Al Ahly of Egypt and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco have qualified from Africa and Auckland City of New Zealand will represent Oceania.

The last of the continental finals in 2024 is South America’s Copa Libertadores on Nov. 30.
