My girlfriend and I arrived in Jerusalem on 22nd December not having arranged any day tours. We stayed at the Jaffa Gate Hostel in the Old City for 5 days and picked up a brochure for Bein Harim Tours. Not having many choices available at the time at such short notice, we decided on the day trip to Masada and the Dead Sea with Bein Harim.

Tour 3: Massada and The Dead Sea

We had to be at the David Citadel Hotel at 5:50am in the morning to meet the tour and had to sit till 7:30am until a taxi arrived and took us to meet the tour minibus at the Mount of Olives. A whole 1.5hrs waiting in the hotel lobby!

The tour was ok but the guide was less than friendly and herded us into a pokey minibus for the day. The guide seemed to have bouts of fake, friendly sincerity on brief occasions but that was about it. It was quite a rushed tour but at least the guide did have quite good knowledge about the places we visited, not like the tour to Nazareth and Gallilee region two days later...

Having limited time/options once again we reluctantly booked the day tour to Nazareth-Capernaum- Jordan River with Bein Harim. Well, what a mistake that was. The taxi driver who picked us up for our Masada tour a couple of days before did warn us about the Bein Harim tours and did offer to take us on a personal tour for half again the price of the tour. Despite paying more, we should have taken up his offer..

Tour 4: Nazareth, Tiberias and The Sea of Galilee

The day tour to Nazareth-Capernaum-Jordan River with Bein Harim once again had us waiting early morning at the David Citadel Hotel. Thankfully it was only a 30 minute wait and we had a bus this time. What we failed to realise was that the tour started in the Nazareth region so we spent a couple of hours picking up more people in Tel Aviv before the tour actually started. The tour only started around 8:30am so we'd spent nearly 3 hours stuffing around!

The guide was called David and he was TERRIBLE!! It was as though someone had given the old guy the job as a family favour or something and he didn't want to be there. He was shabbily dressed and untidy, his english was terrible, he was rude and unhelpful, and the most knowledge he had was of the traffic and roads we were travelling on. He also walked off on the tour group without explanation or guidance.

From what I remember, the day consisted primarily of:

Jerusalem to start of tour: 3hrs

Nazareth visit the Church of Annunciation:45min

Capernaum: 45min

Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish at Tabgha: 45min

Lunch (at dodgy restaurant somewhere near Gallilee):1hr

Jordan River: 45min

End of tour to Jerusalem: 4hrs

Believe me, I think most people shared our sentiments that we just wanted to get away from the whole thing and off the tour as soon as possible.

What made it worse was that after an already disappointing day we had to spend another couple of hours dropping off the people in Tel Aviv before the bus took us back to Jerusalem. In hindsight I realised why they didn't have actual site times listed on the tours..you spent most of the time getting to and from the tour!

From 5:50am in the morning till 9:30pm at night we had, if we were lucky, 3hrs of any quality time on the tour.

Unless you're extremely desperate, I'd avoid Bein Harim and find other tour operators or ways to see the sites yourself. I'm sure you'll find much better options out there.

OK, I suggest you three take this conversation out of the saloon, please.

We saw a brochure in our Tel Aviv hotel lobby, and chose to go up to the Galilee the first day we were in Israel. After this trip, we decided if we liked the toour, we would use them for the other tours we wanted to go on.

The bus arrived at the hotel at the stated time (not 5:30 am!!). There were a couple of other pickups, and then the bus traveled to a central meeting point where I guess all the different hotel pickups group and get on the bus for the correct tour. I guess this is just the economics of doing business like this.

It is not a private tour for hundreds of dollars more...it was a one hundred dollar "overview" tour of the region, and we treated it as such. We chose the higher priced toour, on the smaller bus, and the transportation was perfect.. about 20 people. I didn't want to deal with a large busload of people getting on/getting off the bus at every stop.

Was there enoough time at each site? Of course not...but it was our first trip to the Holy Land, and we wanted to cram in as much in a short period of time. We will definitely be back and take extra time at the places we want to explore in depth.

The tour guide on our first tour was very knowledgeable (and I forgot his name).

We used Ben Harim again in Jerusalem for the Old City tour. This time, we were picked up on time, and dropped at another hotel to wait for our tour bus, and had to wait for about an hour (it was explained that there was a bad accident on the main highway from Tel Aviv, where this bus was coming from, and the road was closed for awhile.)

In any event, we got underway, and had a very nice overview of the Old City, and the tour guide (again I don't remember his name) gave us a lot of information that we would not have known if we just walked the Old City ourselves. Was lunch great? Well, we weren't there for the cuisine! it was in the Arab section in a falafel place, and was good enough for a little respite in all the walking around in hot weather.

We did Yad Vashem later in the day, and of course the hour & a half is not nearly enough to adequately see this amazing museum. It's another place we will be back to on our next trip.

I think that most people might have expectations that tours like this will never meet. A private driver might be a better choice for people who want to concentrate on specific areas, or spend more time in one location than another. But for a good overview, we found Ben Harim provided excellent value for the money paid (less than half of what a private driver would have been).

I agree with Anon -- the subject has been explored in depth and, I might say, beaten to death.

I should have paid more attention to the fact that our agent took ages confirming our tours (blaming the tour company for delaying confirmation in the first place).

We had booked 2 trips: Jerusalem and Bethlehem and Massada and the dead sea last week (October 2009) for 2 consecutive days.

There we were waiting outside our hotel for thr first trip in the morning for 30 minutes and nobody showed up!

We had to go in and ask reception who phoned them and an operator at Bein Harim said that we were just down for Bethlehem in the afternoon according to their records (what rubbish!) and it was now too late to go on that tour. So we accepted this and agreed to go on the Massada trip this day instead. Again, we waited outside only to find no-one turn up. We then went back to the desk at reception and he phoned them again and was told they were 'on their way'. We waited outside again and nobody showed up. The receptionist then came out of the hotel and told us that they had sent a TAXI for us to take us to the tour! Yes, a taxi did arrive with another couple who were going on a trip. The taxi took us to the Hyatt hotel where there were coaches waiting. The trip didn't begin until 10am which is a waste of time as far I am concerned.

The trip itself was badly organised with more time spent at a tourist shop then anything else and the guide wasn't very impressive either (too old) and lacked interest in us.

Upon the return, people were dropped off at various locations and the driver brought us back right at peak traffic so it was horrendous to arrive back at this ridiculous time and if we'd left earlier this could have been avoided. We were so angry we got out earlier and walked back to our hotel.

2nd day, once again, no-one showed up outside our hotel so we had to ring from reception. 'On our way' was the reply again, so we were told. True to form, a taxi turned up eventually and took us to the Hyatt hotel where we boarded another coach.

The trip itself to Jerusalem and Bethlehem could have been fantastic if it wasn't for the following:

Time spent too long in tourist shops in both Jerusalem and Bethlehem

Didn't take us to David's tower

Being forced to have a meal at lunch-time in a back-street over-priced cafe

Not taking us to Field of the good shepherd in Bethlehem as advertised

General poor time management

Something horrendous happened to 4 of us aswell in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem: we were separated from the group due to crowds and poor control from the guide. We waited outside for our guide and group only to be joined by 2 others who had gone astray too. A man approached us and said the group had gone back across the walled check-point from Jerusalem/Bethlehem which really terrified us. He then loaded us in to a van and drive us to the tourist shop and were told to go in. The staff in the shop were vultures but told us our group was coming, which it did later. Too much time was spent here and we never went to the Field of the Good Shepherd as advertised which annoyed me.

Before you ask 'why didn't you cancel' I will say that we would not have been refunded as per 'the rules' and we only had 2 days and could not make other arrangements.

Thank you for your post. It is important to hear a different voice. Most of those that post have a negative experience and this is why they post.

I found the tours to be a good balance. It was a quick overview of the most important sites with knowledgeable guides, efficient transportation and worry-free escorts. There was a bit of shuffling around while gathering the appropriate tourists, but not too much of an inconvenience. Drop-off was the same. Would I rather be dropped off at the end of the tour; yes, but you get what you pay for.

I recommend bringing a book for the ride, but I enjoyed just looking out the window of the coaches. Don't forget to bring a bathing suit to the Dead Sea. The ones you can buy there are one-time-use only! Food was typical of tour food around the world. If you want world-class eating, then go after the tour.
