Symphony of the Seas

The 6,680-passenger, 2,200-crew-member Symphony of the Seas set sail in 2018 and features 18 decks packed with activities.

For heart-pounding fun, travelers will find a surf simulator, an indoor ice skating rink, two 40-foot rock walls, a zip line and a 10-story slide. Meanwhile, relaxation seekers can unwind in the spa, sip cocktails made by robotic bartenders or stroll through the Central Park -inspired neighborhood.

Onboard snacks and meals are served at 20 quick-service and sit-down eateries. The Main Dining Room is where the ship's traditional, complimentary dinners are provided nightly, but specialty options like a steakhouse, a bistro and a Johnny Rockets outpost are also available. What's more, cruisers can dine at Jamie's Italian, a restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

After filling up on gourmet fare, passengers can retreat to their cabins, all of which include work desks, flat-screen TVs and minibars. Guests can choose from 149-square-foot Interior Staterooms, some of which have virtual balconies with real-time views of the ocean, or opt for upgraded cabins with furnished balconies and up to 1,524 square feet of space. Select suites also feature two bedrooms, whirlpool tubs and dining rooms.

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Allure of the Seas

The 6,826-passenger Allure of the Seas, unveiled in 2010, is among the largest cruise ships in the world. There are a whopping 2,054 crew members on board to cater to passengers' needs. Along with signature line amenities like rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks, the ship houses seven unique neighborhoods with a variety of activities, shows and dining options. Other standout features include a zip line that descends 10 decks, two surf simulators and a science lab. Plus, with 19 dining options – and a Starbucks at sea – every member of the family will be satisfied.

In terms of lodging, about 65% of cabins feature balconies, and all staterooms are appointed with TVs and minifridges. Interior staterooms are the most economical option, but those who splurge on Suites are granted larger balconies and concierge service. Crowd-free areas might be difficult to find due to the outrageous capacity of the ship, but some recent cruisers praise the nonstop activity and entertainment.

Carnival Mardi Gras

There's a good reason why Carnival named one of its newest ships Mardi Gras. The ship – which launched in July 2021 – is not only named after the first Carnival ship that entered service in 1972, but also features amenities and activities that keep guests entertained and the atmosphere energized. Carnival designed the ship with six different zones, each with a unique flair. Kids can play all day in the Ultimate Playground, which features WaterWorks (the onboard water park), SkyCourse (a ropes course) and Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, an onboard roller coaster that travels up to 40 mph. Meanwhile, adults can take advantage of Lido, where the RedFrog Tiki Bar flanks one of the ship's pools. Additional activities include a comedy club, a casino, Family Feud Live (yes – it looks like the famous show's set) and a spa.

As you might expect from its large-scale amenities, Mardi Gras is sizeable: It accommodates up to 6,465 passengers and 1,745 crew members. To keep up with demand, the ship offers close to 20 different dining venues serving everything from sushi to burgers to fried chicken. When travelers need refreshments or a nightcap, they can visit one of seven bars and lounges.

Following a full day of fun, cruisers will need a quiet retreat to rest their heads. Staterooms feature Carnival Comfort Collection linens, TVs and a dedicated room steward. Upgraded rooms may include perks like exclusive access to ship amenities, bottles of water, in-room coffee makers and priority check-in and disembarkation. Rooms range in size from 158 square feet for interior staterooms to the massive 1,120-square-foot Carnival Excel Presidential Suite.

Catch Mardi Gras in Caribbean locales like San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Cozumel and Grand Turk .

U.S. News Insider Tip: To dine at Bonsai Teppanyaki (available on Celebration , Horizon , Panorama , Venezia and Mardi Gras), make your reservation as soon as possible. The restaurant only seats 16 people at a time, so reservations go fast. –  Karon Warren , Contributor

Unique features – including a glass walkway extending 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship – make Regal Princess stand out among competitors. Guests can expect quality service on the 3,560-passenger, 1,346-crew-member ship, which debuted in 2014 and was most recently updated in 2017.

Regal Princess offers plenty of onboard activities, from an indoor driving range to a photography studio to educational programming through Discovery at SEA events. While adults sip cocktails at one of the onboard lounges, kids and teens can enjoy age-appropriate youth clubs. Come mealtime, the whole gang can choose between the main dining rooms, a number of specialty restaurants (including Sabatini's Italian venue) and multiple laid-back eateries.

All cabins come appointed with minifridges and flat-screen TVs. While Interior cabins measure between 158 and 162 square feet, larger Balcony staterooms occupy 214 to 222 square feet. The ship also features Mini-Suite category cabins, which offer two flat-screen TVs, bathtubs and furnished balconies. Each guest aboard Regal Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Adventure of the Seas

Adventure of the Seas (first launched in 2001) underwent an extensive renovation in January 2018. It boasts modern amenities like an outdoor movie screen and Wi-Fi (for an extra fee). Other highlights include an ice skating rink, a surf simulator and a rock climbing wall.

There are seven dining venues across the ship, the newest of which is the Izumi Japanese specialty restaurant. While adults can relax at the ship's nine bars and lounges, youngsters can mix and mingle at age-appropriate youth clubs and a teens-only disco. Among other onboard amenities, Adventure of the Seas features an abundance of pools and whirlpools, including an indoor/outdoor pool and lounge area exclusive to adults called the Solarium.

When it comes to lodging, recent cruisers found staterooms to be comfortable and spacious. Cabins come in four categories – Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite – and about 60% offer ocean views. The ship's 2018 revamp brought with it new Interior and Ocean View staterooms, as well as a new Suite Lounge. While it may be difficult to find quiet spaces on the 3,807-passenger ship, recent guests were still complimentary of the service on board and the 1-to-3 crew-to-guest ratio.

Adventure of the Seas sails to various destinations in the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale , Florida and Orlando , Florida. The ship also completes transatlantic voyages.

We’re All Overlooking the Easiest Group Trip Ever: The Cruise

By Dan Q. Dao

Royal Caribbean Allure in Nassau

Planning a vacation for a group of friends can be incredibly tricky. Depending on the crew, you’ll need enough flexibility to please participants of every age, while also eliminating the stress of committing to pre-booked activities for the whole group. There’s also the matter of accommodating dozens of dietary restrictions, and, well, making sure everyone ends up in the same place, all in one piece.

I never thought that cruises would be an attractive solution. I remember going on several as a kid and loving it back then, but when I moved to New York City as a young adult, I got the idea that cruises were expensive, and worse, un-cool—something like giant floating theme parks with overly sweet cocktails and people with bad taste.

As it turns out, cruises offer a wide range of experiences , from family-oriented to more of a party atmosphere, and can also include good food, real cultural immersion, and a super easygoing vibe for a big group. And cost-wise, you could actually save a ton of money and time while visiting more destinations in one week than you ever could on land.

Kate Love, a 28-year-old data analyst in Houston, Texas, has planned high headcount cruises with her parents, friends, and their parents in the Caribbean—with a group as large as 35. Her favorite part? Being able to visit several places in just a few days, without having to book flights and worry about packing, unpacking, and moving to different hotels.

Royal Caribbean International Old San Juan Puerto Rico

Cruises give you the chance to see far more places in a short amount of time than you would on land, such as island-hopping in the Caribbean.

“We've done multiple cruise itineraries out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and have always found those itineraries to be the best bang for your buck—you hit an island almost every day and just when you think it couldn't get better, the next island does,” Love says. “Royal Caribbean in particular has always been overly accommodating to our large groups. We're talking 12 to 15 rooms all in the same corner of one hallway.”

For groups of a larger size, Leona Bowman—the 34-year-old, Amsterdam-based mom and travel blogger behind Wandermust Family —says cruises are especially ideal because no one has to commit to the full itinerary. Part of your group can opt for an excursion while the other chooses to explore independently.

“I think the key to a great cruise holiday with a group is to not schedule every minute of every day,” Bowman says. “We like to use the rule of thumb that for every hectic all-in group day, we have a day where members can plan their own thing. Plan the big things you want to do as a group early, but also remember to savor the catching up when you’ve all had day of individual exploring.” Love agrees: “Our only rule was: show up to dinner, which was non-negotiable.”

Leo Chan, a 30-year-old, NYC-based travel and men’s fashion influencer, adds that having a predetermined routine aboard the Celebrity Millennium’s Alaska Glacier cruise allowed his group of four—which included his girlfriend and her parents—to make the most of the day while they were out on excursions, knowing that by night, they’d be relaxing and en route to the next destination. “On average, the all-aboard time was around 4 p.m. to make it back in time to relax and have dinner,” Chan says. “We had a great schedule with 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to explore Alaska , such as glacier hiking and whale watching.”

It’s worth noting that the limited time frame and activities at each destination also means you won’t be overwhelmed with options. Cruises cater to those who want to be able to “choose their own adventure,” while also being limited enough to prevent the kind of option paralysis that plagues millennials .

All of this is well and good, but what about the food, the drink, and culture of traveling? Cruise lines are actively catering to a more discerning, oftentimes young, traveler looking to spend time poolside on a boat, but also to connect with far-flung destinations through their gastronomic treasures .

In my last few cruises—which ranged from budget to mid-range and ultra-luxe—I’ve explored jungle farms in Bali, gone snorkeling in the Caribbean, and made new friends over wine tastings off the Tuscan coast. I’ve eaten great meals on- and off-board, and met chefs and culinary tastemakers. They’re the type of experiences I’d pay for in New York, but with that added sense of place, they’ve become some of my most memorable—and photo-worthy—vacation experiences.

While every cruise line is different, it’s worth pointing out the great strides that many ships have taken. The S.A.L.T. program on the luxury line Silversea connects guests with local farms and chefs via extensive, curated food tours. Or, on the more mass-market end, there’s the MSC Divina , with outposts of Eataly’s Ristorante Italia and Manzo steakhouse. Most ships have casual, buffet-style dining options—truly, something for everyone—alongside specialty restaurants, as well as grill, café, and juice bar options.

That’s not to mention the fact that you’ll likely save money on food if you stick to breakfast and dinner on-board, while enjoying lunch at a port for local flavor. For millennials like me who are particular about scoping out a new location and its restaurants, it’s nice to be able to settle on one of two must-try spots, knowing those will be my only added costs.

The same goes for drinking, which can really raise the final tab on a vacation. “There's very, very little unexpected expense on a cruise, whereas this obviously isn't the case with most hotels,” Love says. “If you like to drink, the packages are a must—I've discovered some of my favorite drinks on cruises because I had no fear that I was going to get stuck with a $12 cocktail that I would hate. I'm also a big wine with dinner drinker, and that can add up.”

If you enjoy traditional entertainment like live music, musicals, or other shows, cruise offerings often come close to what you’d find in destinations like Vegas or Disney. The difference is you won’t shell out additional cash on last-minute tickets, Love says. “If you want to go see a musical one night—great, check the schedule and go. You want to go to the dance club? Cool, your drinks are paid for. Ice skating? Done. The comedy show? Free. Every single night has different options for you and you get to make a last minute choice without spending more.”

Beyond flexibility and new experiences, there’s a unique social atmosphere on cruises that allows you to meet new people. Huyen Thanh Le, a 45-year-old business consultant, remembers planning her wedding on a cruise specifically so her and her husband’s 150 guests could meet each other in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

“We were 32 and we wanted to do something intimate but allow both sides of our families to hang out and get to know each other,” Le says. “It wasn’t a typical wedding and dinner because there were so many people we didn’t know that well, but knew our families would invite.” Her solution for dealing with 150 guests? “Create a group text to keep everyone on the same page—we printed our own schedule for activities each day to go along with the cruise activities.”

However you decide to rock your cruise vacation, the number one rule is to have fun and keep things stress-free. And that’s something anyone can get onboard with.

European Cruise

The island of Santorini, Greece, a popular port of call on Mediterranean cruises.

Why a group cruise trip can be one of the best deals ever

Take advantage of group discounts. “Cruise lines sometimes offer discounts for the more tickets you book—I’ve even seen deals that are buy five get one free,” Love says. “So what we would do is book all of the berths together, and split the discounted fare between everyone.”

Travel during off-peak times. Bowman notes: “Interestingly, off-peak can differ by region. For example, Alaskan cruises and the Caribbean start to get cheaper by the third week in August, as American kids go back to school. Conversely, when American schools go for break in June, European kids are still in class, so those cruises will be a little cheaper than they are in July and early August.”

Always be on the lookout for last-minute deals. Chan says: “If you're okay cruising with an inside room, that is the cheapest way to go. Check if your cruise line offers last deal bid upgrades. We recently paid for a big upgrade from an inside room to a balcony at a fraction of the cost it would have been if we had booked it originally.”

Before departing, get a copy of everyone’s travel information in case of worst-scenario situations. “We worked with the cruise coordinator directly to nail down information for our whole group," Le says. "But we also kept a copy of all your guests’ information (passport scans, flight information) just in case.”

When possible, book excursions outside of the cruise line. “If your group is over a certain size—usually six or more—and in a place you feel comfortable traveling independently in, it can be much cheaper to arrange excursions independent of the cruise ship,” Bowman says. “There are some global and local excursion specialists who have cruise-specific tours that will provide guarantees for getting you back to the ship on time just like the tours sold by the line themselves.”

How to Plan a Cruise for a Large Family

By Elissa Garay

Last updated: March 7th, 2024

Cruises for large families - family hanging out on a cruise deck

  • Find a Cruise

Cruising is as close as it comes to a one-size-fits-all vacation, with a something-for-everyone appeal and value-packed activities and amenities—like accommodations, dining, entertainment, and transportation from port to port—all neatly bundled into one upfront fare.

But arranging cruises for large families—that is, family units that are larger than the cookie-cutter two to four members—can be a bit more complicated. Happily, with just a little know-how, planning a more-the-merrier cruise for large families can be a relative breeze.

The reasons for choosing a family cruise vacation are many: The ease of planning and great value, with nearly all-inclusive pricing, certainly rank tops. Then there are the varied diversions, both on and off the ship, that cater to multigenerational tastes.

Family aboard Celebrity Cruises

Not to mention that you’ll have the chance to reconnect with the brood in a stress-free environment while making memories to share for years to come, as you explore the world on a high seas adventure.

The key to successful cruises for large families? Advance planning. Check off these tasks ahead of time so when you get to the embarkation port , there’ll be nothing left to do but enjoy the smooth sailing ahead.

Follow the Leader

People walking inside The Ranch

If you’re traveling with extended family, there’s nothing like too many cooks in the kitchen to spoil a vacation. Save some headaches and appoint one person to serve as the group leader (if you’re reading this, then that may be you), who can help research, organize, and work through all of the necessary logistics, like developing the group’s travel itinerary, for instance, or ensuring that payment deadlines are met.

The leader should also be the person who facilitates communications between the family so that everybody is on the same page, while also acting as the point person that can liaise directly with the cruise line and/or travel agent.

Communicate and Collaborate

Family on a catamaran cruise

While every group can benefit from a leader, nobody wants a dictator. The designated cruise leader should be focused on ensuring fluent communication between all participating family members, so that nobody feels left out of the loop or the decision-making process on important factors like budget, sailing dates, and cruising destinations. Even kids can have a say on things like preferred ports and cruise ship activities . After all, this is a vacation for everyone.

(Tip: As the group leader and main researcher, you can help make your family’s decision-making process more manageable by narrowing down the broader choices ahead of time. After all, fewer options make consensus more achievable.)

If you’re cruising with only your own household, hold in-person meetings as developments arise. Otherwise, share plans and information as it comes through via email, a group text thread, or perhaps a private Facebook group page.

Also, the group leader shouldn’t feel bogged down with working through every single aspect of cruise planning : Feel free to have guests “own” certain parts of the trip, like researching a cruise port and coming up with excursion ideas or planning onboard activities.

Cruises for large families - family hanging out on a cruise deck

Celebrity Flora

Cruising may be a relatively easy vacation to plan, but that doesn’t mean you should leave it to the last minute, especially when you have a large family to wrangle. Plan to book as far in advance as possible—count on a minimum of six months out (or more, if you’re planning to sail during the summer or school holidays)—to make sure you’ll have plenty of time to hash out your family’s cruise vacation preferences.

Once you have your perfect cruise pinpointed, you want to be sure that the itinerary isn’t sold out and that the inventory is there to accommodate your group’s preferred staterooms, especially if you’re looking for more limited stateroom types, like connecting staterooms or spacious suites.

Get Your Documentation in Order

Woman holding a USA passport

Passports are the recommended identification for cruisers since most itineraries involve travel to international ports. (Note: An original birth certificate may suffice for children but additional documentation may be required for kids who are not cruising with both parents, so be sure to inquire ahead.)

Accordingly, check in with the cruise line or your travel agent well in advance of your sailing to ensure that the whole family has valid documentation on hand, with plenty of time to spare.

It’s also a smart idea to book a travel insurance policy for your trip, as soon as your sailing is booked. A good insurance policy can provide reimbursement if your vacation plans are disrupted by an emergency, and can also ensure that you have health insurance should you need it while far away from home.

Choose the Right Cruise

Family chatting and drinking juice ondeck

The single most important thing you can do to ensure a winning cruise for large families is to make sure that you’re on the right ship, at the right time, and going to the right place.

You’ll have to determine those factors when you’re choosing a cruise according to your family’s tastes and circumstances. Plan on consulting with your family members on the following options to ensure sailing success:

Determine Budgets

If an extended family is cruising together, be sure to set a budget that’s comfortable for everybody and limit sailing options to those that fall within the agreed-upon price range. Don’t forget to factor in extras like the costs of flights and hotels (if needed), and shore excursions in port, too. As for the cruise fare itself, keep in mind that different stateroom types can span a wide spectrum of prices, as well.

Select Optimized Sailing Dates

Make sure you take into account all of your sailing party’s various scheduling considerations before settling on a sailing date. Note that if you’re traveling with youngsters, you’ll likely have to fit your sailing into school holiday periods.

Decide on the Duration

Make sure your family is all on board with the duration of the sailing. Not everybody will be able to get away for a two-week-long dream vacation, while others might want more time at sea than just a quickie three-night escape. Luckily, there are plenty of sailing lengths in between to choose from.

Pick a Ship with Multigenerational Features

Make sure you choose a ship that comes loaded with amenities and activities that cater to a wide range of ages, abilities, and interests. Make sure to check off features that are important to you, such as pools, fitness centers, libraries, bars and nightclubs, restaurants, casinos, shops, spas, theaters, music venues, kids’ clubs, etc. And skim through entertainment options and activities like cooking lessons, lectures, fitness classes, Broadway-style shows, too.

Hone in on a Dream Destination

Cruises give you a chance to sample an impressive amount of ports in just a few days. Therefore, try and pick a destination that will appeal to your party’s interests. Whether your family members are primarily beach bums (hello, Caribbean), wildlife enthusiasts (Alaska is at the top of the list), or culture vultures (the Mediterranean is calling), you’ll find there are multiple destinations to choose from.

Pick your shore excursions accordingly and don’t be afraid to split up to pursue different interests on land. (Tip: You might want to settle on a cruise that leaves from a close-to-home embarkation port, which will save you travel time and perhaps the need for airfare, too.)

Book the Best Stateroom

Modern interior of Celebrity Edge Iconic Suite

Iconic Suite

Families come in all shapes and sizes and, happily, so do staterooms . While many standard staterooms cater to parties of two to four, there are a wide range of accommodations to fit your family size.

Connecting or neighboring staterooms are one of the easiest solutions to accommodate larger groups, while spacious, splurge-worthy suites that sleep at least five with plenty of room to spread out are also worth considering, if you have a more comfortable budget.

Just keep in mind that varying stateroom types cover a wide range of costs, so be sure to match each accommodation to your family’s spending caps. Also, staterooms and combinations that accommodate larger families tend to be more limited in supply, so plan well in advance to nab your preferred stateroom on your preferred itinerary.

Break Bread Together

Family eating at Seaside Restaurant aboard Celebrity Flora

For many, one of the best parts of cruising is the food on the ship —and the fact that you don’t need to pick up the tab or cook or clean up after a large clan. Large families find that dining together is a great way to share some special moments at the beginning and end of each day.

Make sure to reserve a large table and preferred dining time in the main dining room for your group well ahead of the sailing date. And don’t forget to allow for a little flexibility if anybody wants to sample the specialty restaurants, too.

This shared evening mealtime can be the perfect opportunity to catch up on the details of the day, especially if your large family has opted to go their separate ways.

Cruise Together, But Take Time Apart

Couple relaxing at the Lawn Club

The beautiful thing about cruising is that it caters to so many individual tastes. So while you should assemble the whole gang for regular meals and shared excursions, don’t plan on scheduling every minute of every day as a group—even if it’s a family reunion cruise . Do leave plenty of time for members to break off as needed and to do their own thing, both on the ship and ashore.

In port, not everybody might have a need for speed (Grandpa may not want to go ziplining, for instance), and a history-rich tour might bore the younger ones. Back on the ship, someone’s idea of sea day bliss might be hanging poolside, while others might want to hit the casino and lecture circuit. Some may be night owls, while some are early birds.

If you have kids, you might want to look into supervised kids’ clubs onboard. That way, parents can have a little time for themselves while kids get to interact with other young cruisers.

Your family is bound to have plenty of individual interests, so be sure to leave plenty of time for each individual to indulge them. It will make the family dinner conversation that much more interesting when you regroup.

Group cruises are a great way to spend a vacation with friends, family or any other type of group whether large or small. Cruises provide great value On a cruise people can opt to go their own way part of the time or, if they choose, join in on group activities. Dining can be together as a group or only for certain nights within a cruise. A group cruise can be set up in the way that works best for each group.

How does a Group Cruise Work?

While it varies by cruise line in general 8 cabins makes up a group, however, in some cases the number only 5 cabins maybe required to create a group. Once the number of cabins is determined we will hold the group space and then the group leader can promote the group, communicate the details such as pricing to the group, determine the dining and meeting space needs and get people excited to join the cruise.

Benefits of Booking a Group Cruise

There are many benefits of booking a group cruise. First is lower pricing and the rates are guaranteed for the categories that are held. Without booking into a group the rates are always subject to change. In addition, groups are offered extra amenities ranging from onboard credits, a complimentary bottle of wine or a cocktail party, specialty dining or other amenities.

Plus, the group leader can sail for FREE as a tour conductor credit will be issued back after the group sails. The amount of the tour conductor credit varies according to the cruise lines and the number and variety of cabins within the group. In general it is one berth (not cabin) for 16 full fare passengers traveling in the group. And, the more cabins that are sold the higher the number of tour conductor credits are earned!

Group Activities

Group activities can be varied according to the group needs. Dining can be set up together, special parties can be set up on board, meeting space complete with audio-visual equipment and group shore excursions can be offered.

The 5 Best Large-ship Ocean Cruise Lines in 2022

The best large-ship cruise lines, according to Travel + Leisure readers, prove that, when it comes to entertainment on the high seas, bigger is definitely better.

best cruise line for large groups

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite large-ship ocean cruise lines.

For the 2022 World's Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure adjusted the cruise categories to reflect changes in the industry and travelers' experiences. Ship categories are now based on the number of cabins, and the large-ship category now covers ships with 800 to 1,499 cabins. Several previous large-ship awardees, including Viking Ocean Cruises and Seabourn, have moved to the midsize-ship category.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

In the No. 2 spot is the venerable line Cunard, with its three ocean liners. T+L readers applauded the classic décor and elevated onboard atmosphere. "We love everything about this ship," wrote one fan who sailed on the Queen Mary 2 . "We have both crossed the Atlantic and cruised in the Caribbean on the QM, and the experience is always outstanding."

Celebrity Cruises, with ships that include the state-of-the-art Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, claims the No. 3 position. Said one reader who cruised on Apex: "Amazing ships. Perfect size for my family." A sister ship, Celebrity Beyond, debuted in April 2022. Celebrity also tops this year's mega-ship awards category with its larger Celebrity Reflection.

Holland America Line, celebrating 75 years in Alaska in 2022, is in the No. 4 spot. "Food is excellent, crew is friendly and attentive; and cabins are large compared to other cruise lines," one voter wrote. Royal Caribbean International, with its smaller 1990s ships such as Enchantment of the Seas and Vision of the Seas, comes in at No. 5.

Impressively, all the top lines that readers chose as the best cruise lines for large ships are WBA Hall of Fame honorees. Read on to find out why Disney Cruise Line is the crème de la crème.

1. Disney Cruise Line

There's nothing like watching a child's eyes light up when they meet Mickey and Minnie, or Elsa from Frozen, or Spider-Man. But the amusement-park-level attractions, carefully orchestrated kids' programming, entertainment, and family dining on Disney ships are also big wows. Perhaps most noteworthy, though, is that these ships manage to cater to both families with kids and adults sans kids. Grown-ups get separate hangout spots such as an adults-only nightlife area, pool, and specialty dining venues. "Excellent for families and for singles," one T+L reader said. "Best memories," said another. The line's four ships are back in service, but that's not all fans have to look forward to as the line's much-anticipated fifth ship, Disney Wish , debuted in early July.

6 family-friendly cruise lines for a multi-generation cruise

We pick the best family-friendly cruise lines

Family. The one thing you value above all else. And what better way to spend time together than on a family cruise? It’s a perfect way to get the whole family together in one place, and here we look at the best family-friendly cruise lines.

On a family cruise, you never need to compromise. You decide exactly how you want to live, where to eat, and how to spend your days. Multi-generation cruising does offer something for everyone.

Quick navigation

Multi-generation cruising is more popular than ever before

Cruising takes on a whole new meaning when traveling with your family group. Multi-generation cruising is a growing trend as you discover what great value for money your family cruise offers. From youngest to oldest, you can be together as much as you please or take time for yourself on board. You can always meet up at the end of the day for those family dinners or nights at the theatre.

On a family cruise, kids and adults have many activities to choose from. Adults can feel like kids again, and the kids are creatively entertained from dawn until dusk! It’s also a fantastic way for grandparents to make memories with their grandchildren. And parents get a welcome break when grandparents can enjoy activities with the kids in a fun environment.

Wake up in a new port every day.

In addition to having a great time onboard, each day offers an opportunity to see something new together. Each day, stepping off the cruise ship and into a new port is just fantastic. You travel to a new city while you sleep and wake up to new sights and sounds daily. Multi-generation cruising allows you to create these memories for life with the people who mean the most to you.

Whether exploring by yourselves or with a group excursion, the sights, and sounds of a new destination ensure variety. The anticipation of meeting the locals, tasting fresh foods, and trying out new activities add to one unforgettable day. Times that by at least seven, and who can deny that a multi-generation cruising holiday is anything but fabulous?

Choosing cabins on the best family-friendly cruise lines

Cruise lines offer more family cabins and combined cabins than ever before. That means your family can select cabins that suit your budget. You can combine premium cabins – for example, grandma and grandpa, who may have a bigger budget – with standard family cabins. All while still living close by one another in the same area of the ship.

Things to consider before you book your multi-generation cruise

Which family members will live together in one cabin? You may decide you need, for example, two cabins that sleep four quests in each and two cabins that sleep two guests each. Tell your cruise consultant you are flexible, though other configurations may suit you and your pocket. For example, imagine if you are eight family members traveling together. Do you book a 2-bedroom suite for four guests plus a balcony room for four guests? Compare this to 4 cabins with two guests each, and you could get a much better price.

Do you need interconnecting doors on your family cruise? These cabins are great for adults with teenagers. You can be close but do not need to be all squeezed together in one cabin. Our tip is if you are a family of 4 sharing a cabin and the kids are young adults, book a family balcony cabin. You will be glad of the extra 4-6 square meters of space a balcony gives you.

Multi-generation cruising – cabin choice matters.

What kind of cabin do you want? You choose between inside cabins, window cabins, balcony cabins, or suites. Price will play a significant factor here. But sometimes, the price difference between a balcony cabin and a window cabin can be minimal, depending on where on board the cabin is located. Look out for any special offers or campaigns the cruise line is running.

Perhaps the senior members of your family will use a balcony more if they are relaxing in their cabin during the day or have a slower start to their mornings. At the same time, mums and dads with youngsters may not want a balcony at all, just a window. Teenagers sharing a room will most likely always be busy onboard. If they mainly use their cabin just for sleeping, perhaps an inside cabin without a window is enough, enabling you to save money.

Are there any parts of the ship you do not want to live close to? For example, a cabin close to elevators is excellent if you don’t want to walk so far. However, you may hear loud guests walking past at all hours. Cabins directly under pool decks or near the theatre can also be noisy.

You may want to avoid cabins at the front of the ship where the anchor is located. And the engines are at the back of the ship, and vibrations will be louder in these areas.

What is important to you is important to the cruise line. They want to keep you happy, so make sure you talk to them about the best options to suit your family on your multi-generation cruise.

Our top pick of the six best family-friendly cruise lines

When looking for family-friendly cruise lines and cruises for large multi-generational families, you will find that the Caribbean and Mediterranean offer extensive popular itineraries.

The largest cruise ships have more facilities, larger pool areas, and more family-based excursions. They are hard to beat when there is something for everyone of all ages. And these cruise ships offer endless activities and countless ways to have fun on board.

These cruise lines offer all this and much more:

  • Luxury cruise ships with fantastic amenities
  • Cabins to suit all family members
  • A vast array of activities for all ages
  • Awesome Kids Clubs

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean’s big new mega-ships have a vast range of activities. The cruise line ensures families have a great time and is ideal for family and multi-generational cruising. It offers everything from surfboarding, ziplining, and carousels to top Broadway musicals, ice-cream stations, and phenomenal water slides. It’s hard to go wrong with Royal Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle cruising approach is a hit with families of all ages who love the flexibility and no dress code. Many NCL restaurants have flexible dining options, great kids’ clubs, and exciting water parks. You do not need to pre-book anything; you do what you like when you like.

Watch out for their prices, though, and compare with other cruise lines – the price jump from inside and window cabins up to balcony options can be extreme. Otherwise, be sure to try and get a deal with their extra Free at Sea packages when booking (wifi, open bar, excursions, specialty dining, and additional guests). The extras can all add up on board when you have many guests in your group.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival offers excellent value for money. Most major cruise lines in the world are centered purely on having fun and are very popular in the Caribbean. It’s an upbeat cruise line and very energetic, where every night is party night. Carnival Cruise Line has fun partnerships with some big brands, such as Dr. Zeuss.

MSC Cruises

MSC is a family-run cruise line based in Italy. On board, you will find a fantastic mix of multicultural guests, mainly from Europe, with six standard languages. The food in the buffet restaurants is Italian-inspired, and who doesn’t like a taste of Italy?

MSC Cruises is a well-priced cruise line with great prices for kids under 18. Their summer itineraries from northern Europe to beautiful Norway are fantastic. Ports of call in the Norwegian Fjords are outstanding and suited to teens and older kids who love the great outdoors. Choose MSC Cruises for your multi-generational cruising if your kids are teens or older.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney is the expert in kids’ entertainment, which is unrivaled for kids ages 4 to 11, to whom they cater the best. But you’ll always find the adult-only areas on board when you need a break! Disney offers suburb cruises, but prices can be high compared to, for example, Royal Caribbean.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises are relatively traditional in their style of cruising. This one is very popular with British families when looking for family-friendly cruise lines for multi-generational cruising. This is a good choice if you are traveling from a port in the UK, most likely on a cruise from Southampton . The ships are big, airy, and fun but still quite traditional in their style of cruising.

Researching cruise destinations will help you find the perfect location that caters to everyone’s preferences. Whether you’re looking for a tropical getaway or an exploration of historical sites, there are numerous options to choose from.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer group discounts which can help you save money while still enjoying all the amenities and activities onboard.

Finding the Right Ship

Finding the right ship for a big party can be a challenge, but it’s worth it to ensure everyone has a great time. When planning a cruise for a large group, it’s important to consider the ship amenities and group dining options.

Look for ships that offer a variety of entertainment options, such as pools, casinos, and theaters, to keep everyone entertained throughout the trip. Additionally, check if the ship has spacious common areas where your group can gather and socialize.

When it comes to dining, make sure the ship offers group dining options, so your party can enjoy meals together. This could include private dining rooms or the ability to reserve a large table in the main dining room.

Coordinating Group Accommodations

Coordinating accommodations for a big party on a cruise can be a challenge, but it’s important to ensure everyone has a comfortable place to stay. Here are some key considerations when booking accommodations for a large group:

Group transportation: Look for cruise lines that offer shuttle services from the airport or provide assistance with arranging group transportation to the port. This will make it easier for everyone to arrive together and start the cruise on time.

Group dining: Coordinate with the cruise line to reserve a private dining area or a large table for your group. This will allow everyone to dine together and enjoy meals as a group, creating a sense of camaraderie and making it easier to socialize and plan activities.

Cabin arrangements: Discuss with the cruise line the best options for accommodating your large group. They may be able to offer connecting cabins or suites that can accommodate multiple people, ensuring everyone is close by and comfortable.

Special requests: If any members of your group have specific needs or preferences, such as accessibility requirements or dietary restrictions, make sure to communicate those to the cruise line in advance. They will do their best to accommodate these requests and ensure everyone has a pleasant experience.

By taking the time to coordinate accommodations that meet the needs of your large group, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience for everyone.

Once the accommodations are settled, it’s time to start planning group activities that will make the cruise even more memorable.

Planning Group Activities

When planning activities for your big party on a cruise, consider options that will appeal to a wide range of interests.

One great idea is to organize team building activities that will encourage your group to bond and have fun together. From scavenger hunts to trivia nights, there are plenty of options available that can cater to different preferences.

Additionally, don’t forget to take advantage of any group discounts offered by the cruise line. These discounts can provide significant savings for your entire group and allow you to allocate more funds towards other aspects of your trip.

Once you have decided on the activities and taken advantage of group discounts, it’s time to move on to booking and managing group reservations.

Booking and Managing Group Reservations

Once you’ve decided on the activities and taken advantage of any available group discounts, it’s time to start managing your reservations.

When booking a cruise for a large group, it’s important to consider the group size and ensure that everyone has a spot. Start by contacting the cruise line or a travel agent to inquire about group booking options. Many cruise lines offer discounts and special perks for groups, such as onboard credit or complimentary upgrades.

Provide the cruise line with the number of people in your group and any specific requirements or preferences. It’s also helpful to keep a spreadsheet or document to track each individual’s reservation details, such as cabin type, dining preferences, and shore excursions. This will help you stay organized and ensure that everyone’s needs are met during the booking process.

As families navigate the current landscape of family cruises with Royal Caribbean, it's vital to anticipate the evolving implications for the future.

Here are three key points to consider:

However, unvaccinated children must present a negative COVID-19 test result to set sail. Testing rules for kids vary based on cruise duration and specific destinations.
  • Exemptions for Vaccinated Families : On shorter cruises, vaccinated families with children under 5 are exempt from testing requirements, making planning easier for those who've received the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Policy Updates : Royal Caribbean's latest policy adjustments provide clarity and flexibility for families with young children, offering a more streamlined experience for those looking to embark on future cruises. Stay informed as guidelines may continue to evolve to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for all passengers.

What Are the Requirements for Children on Cruises?

On cruises, children 5 and under skip vaccines and tests. No worries about restrictions! Unvaccinated kids under 5 just need a negative COVID-19 test, except for certain destinations. Families sail free!

Do Kids Have to Be Vaccinated to Go on a Carnival Cruise?

No, kids don't have to be vaccinated to go on a Carnival cruise. Children under 12 can sail with a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated guests. Unvaccinated kids aged 2-11 need a negative COVID-19 test. Safety first for all guests!

Do Kids Have to Be Vaccinated to Go on Disney Cruise?

We don't need to worry about children being vaccinated for a Disney Cruise. Disney Cruise Line doesn't require kids to be vaccinated. Families can enjoy the magic of Disney together on the high seas without vaccination concerns.

Cruising with a Large Family

By About A Mom

Three generations of my family recently headed down to Miami to embark on a 4 day Western Caribbean cruise aboard the Carnival Ecstasy . I can’t recall a time when planning a family vacation was this easy. I am so excited to partner with Carnival Cruise Line for this blog post and share some of the things that made planning my family’s cruise a piece of cake.

Cruising is such a great way to get your family together with minimal planning. Once you get there, the itinerary, dining and entertainment are all taken care of, so you can just enjoy time with family. Spending that little extra time pre-cruise will help make your family’s cruise go more smoothly.

After cruising aboard Carnival Ecstasy with my family last month, I’m excited to share a few tips to help with planning your family’s next cruise.

Tips for Planning a Cruise for a Large Family

Staterooms. While looking at cruises on the Carnival website, I found a lot of different options. When booking your cruise for a large family take time to explore the various stateroom options. Carnival offers a variety of staterooms that will work for large families. I recommend booking early to have the most options. Don’t be intimidated by booking two staterooms. Carnival does offer some adjoining staterooms, and if you are traveling with teenagers consider booking one outside stateroom and the inside stateroom across the hall. That’s exactly what we did for our recent cruise.

Activities. A cruise is the ideal family vacation if you are traveling with children of different ages. There are a variety of activities for all ages. Days can be spent relaxing by the pool, or racing down water slides. You can catch a show before or after dinner. Enjoy a massage while the kids are spending time with their grandparents. The possibilities for fun are endless.

I was excited to learn about Camp Carnival where the younger kids can get involved in kids club activities. On a Carnival cruise, kids can enjoy all the best parts of summer camp and family vacation at Camp Carnival. Kids are split up into three different age groups: 2 to 5 years, 6 to 8 years, and 9 to 11 years. The best thing about Camp Carnival is that it’s free.

Dining options. Our cruise ship, Ecstasy, has so many different dining options that are included with your cruise. There are some buffet options which is great! With kids I think the buffet is always a safe bet. There is surely something that everyone in your party can eat and enjoy. All drinks, on the other hand, are not included with the cost of your cruise. I recommend checking with your cruise line to see what drink packages are available. We opted for the Bottomless Bubbles drink package which includes unlimited soda and juice. You can sign up for a beverage package ahead of time or once onboard.

Shore Excursions. Shore excursions come at an additional cost. If your cruise visits more than one port, consider booking an excursion for just one of them to cut down on the expense. If money isn’t an issue, shore excursions can be a lot of fun and are a great way to have new experiences like snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins. Planning a shore excursion that will be fun for grandparents and kids of different ages is a lot easier than you might think. My family did a beach excursion in Cozumel that was loads of fun for us all. Getting to sunbathe and swim in the ocean during the month of December was such a treat. The water was still plenty warm and the private beach was breathtaking. It was an amazing day for us!

Packing.  I always worry about over-packing, especially since I am usually traveling with teenage girls. It happens so often. You want to put some thought into what you pack for a cruise. It’s a lot less stressful to go on vacation when you have less to haul around. Warm destinations require less bulky clothing, and with the exception of one or two dinners you don’t need to pack anything fancy. Pack mix and match items that can be worn more than once. The girls and I ended up spending most of the cruise in our swimsuits and cover-ups.

Plan a getaway

Bring proper documentation. Of course, passports are the recommended documentation for everyone in the family. However, for most cruise ships , kids can board with a birth certificate only, and adults with a birth certificate and a government issued picture ID. Some cruise lines allow a picture of the birth certificate, if you don’t want to bring the original. Make sure you bring multiple copies. Check with your cruise line to make sure what you need.

Make sure you have all of your documents well in advance of your cruise, in case you are missing something. The night before our cruise my sister was going nuts trying to locate her travel documents. Whew! It was a stressful evening for her and me too. Remember, make sure you have these documents together well in advance.

I was amazed by how simple it was to plan a cruise for my large family. Our cruise was such a great bonding experience, and a chance to have fun and let loose. Visit Carnival online to learn more about planning your own cruise. Will you be planning a cruise anytime soon?

This post was created for Away We Go with Carnival , the destination for getting in the getaway state of mind.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

  • I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
  • I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
  • My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

best cruise line for large groups

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

best cruise line for large groups

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

best cruise line for large groups

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

best cruise line for large groups

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

best cruise line for large groups

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

best cruise line for large groups

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.

‘We’re stranded here’: Couple says cruise line abandoned them on African island

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. ( WMBF /Gray News) - A South Carolina couple’s dream vacation has turned into a nightmare at sea this week.

Jill and Jay Campbell say they are currently stranded on a small island off the coast of Africa after their cruise ship left without them.

“We were waiting for the tender boats to come back and get us because our boat was anchored off the harbor, but they didn’t come back to get us. So, we’re stranded here,” Jay Campbell said.

The Campbells were eight days into a 21-day cruise, which started in South Africa and stopped on the island of São Tomé.

“We were on a tour of the island, but we had an issue on the tour, and they didn’t get us back in time,” Jay Campbell said.

Despite help from the island’s coast guard the cruise ship reportedly refused to let them and several others back on board. This has left some without their money, medicine, vaccination certificates required by immigration, and all other belongings left in their cabins.

WMBF reports that the Norwegian Dawn has abandoned seven American and two Australian passengers.

The Campbells said several passengers are older, one has a heart condition, one is a paraplegic, and another is a pregnant woman.

The couple said they are now trying to reunite with the ship at another African port, but the process has been complicated.

“We’re trying to get written permission from the cruise line to reboard,” Jill Campbell said.

Despite the issues, the forgotten passengers are hopeful they can finish their trip.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to make it through the rest of this trip and end in Spain,” Jay Campbell said.

All the passengers have reportedly tried reaching out to Norwegian Cruise Line but have yet to get any assistance in re-embarking the ship.

“We’ve got our flights booked to Gambia. However, we don’t know if we’ll be able to get into the country and get back on the ship,” Jill Campbell said.

WMBF reports Norwegian Cruise Lines released the following statement regarding the situation on Saturday:

“On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in Sao Tome and Principe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on their own or with a private tour missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time.

While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

Guests are responsible for any necessary travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all-aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port.

Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. We are in communication with the guests and providing additional information as it becomes available.”
