The Great Lakes Region is the perfect travel destination for outdoor lovers, a relaxing getaway, or anyone looking for off-the-beaten-path adventure. Here, I’ll focus on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan destinations. Here’s a breakdown of where to travel in the Great Lakes region:

What to pack for Great Lakes Adventures:

Summers on the Great Lakes can be chilly, particularly in June and early July! Pack for a variety of weather conditions. I recommend…

  • A lightweight, long hiking pant. I use  this pair  from Kuhl or this budget-friendly pair from REI. I wear a women’s size 8 short and have found that both of these pairs are both flattering & functional!
  • A fleece. Any fleece will do, but I really love my  Patagonia Synchilla
  • Wool baselayers. Five years of heavy paddling and my  Smartwool baselayers  are the only wool baselayers I’ve had that have really stood the test of time. The basic REI stuff lasted about a season, my Icebreakers top also didn’t really last long.
  • Study hiking boots. I like my  Bridger Mids.  Working in outdoor retail I literally never had anyone try on these shoes and not buy them. Pair with  Darn Tough  hiking socks.
  • A puffy jacket. It can be cool even in the summer along the coast, especially evenings. My partner Andy (also a wilderness guide) swears by the  Patagonia Nano Puff . I like my  Helly Hansen Liftloft .
  • A Tent:  Read my budget tent recommendations here!
  • A day hiking pack: I love my  Perimeter 35L , made by local (to me!) Two Harbors company Granite Gear. I was gifted this pack a few years back and it’s still my go-to day pack.
  • Sleeping Bag: Check out the  Nemo Disco  down sleeping bag for the perfect comfortable set up for chilly nights. Pair with a comfortable sleeping pad .
  • A raincoat. I love the  Moss Raincoat from Helly Hansen ; It’s affordable, cute, and super durable.

1) The Sleeping Bear Dunes

Ever wanted to watch the sunset 400 feet above Lake Michigan? Or swim in crystal clear, salt-free water? Look no further than Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Located on the edge of Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes have some of the best hiking trails in the Midwest. Between bike trails and beaches, the Sleeping Bear Dunes are one of the best travel destinations in the Great Lakes.

image of hiking boots at sunset at overlook nine in sleeping bear dunes national lakeshore

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is great place for families! Beaches like North Bar Lake Beach provide easy access to both Lake Michigan and a smaller warm lake, and there are many easy hikes in the Sleeping Bear Dunes .

When visiting the Sleeping Bear Dunes, pack a lunch! While there are plenty of trails, there are very few restaurants in the area. The few restaurants will be crowded and have long wait times. There are several campgrounds within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, including DH Day Campground and the Platte River Campground. Book your campsite in advance online at Recreation.gov .

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is home to some of the best Great Lakes beaches, like Esch Road Beach pictured above. If you’re wondering where to travel in the Great Lakes region, make sure Sleeping Bear is near the top of your list.

2) leland, michigan.

Tucked away in the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula, Leland has beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan, hiking trails, wildflowers, and crystal clear water. One of the best harbor towns in the Grand Lakes, Leland is home to the adorable riverside Fishtown.

Historic Fishtown is a great place to walk the docks, and eat local smoked fish. My favorite Fishtown activity is to have a small picnic on the docks and watch for fish in the Leland River below, then head out to the Clay Cliffs for a quick hike.

Image of Leland River at Fishtown Leland as it empties into Lake Michigan in the Historic Fishtown District with a boat on the green water on a sunny day

Leland is a perfect Great Lakes travel destination, with similar beaches to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, beautiful hiking trails, but somewhat crowded. While summer is the busiest and traditionally beautiful month, visit in the fall to avoid the crowds.

3) Traverse City, Michigan

Located at the base of the Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City is the cherry capitol of Michigan. If you’re looking to get Up North and looking for an exciting place to base camp for the week, Traverse City is the Great Lakes summer vacation spot.

In town, you can walk, bike, or swim right on the harbor. Traverse City is also home to several awesome breweries with delicious food, including North Peak Brewing Company , Rare Bird Brewpub , and The Shed Beer Garden .

Traverse City is surrounded by great hiking and paddling options on all sides. From Traverse City, it’s easy to day trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Leland, Torch Lake, or the Manistee National Forest. After a long day on the trails, head up to the Mission Point Lighthouse for a perfect sunset.

4) torch lake, michigan.

Torch Lake is best known for its Caribbean blue waters. At 19 miles long and 2 miles wide, Torch Lake offers endless potential for boaters, fishermen, and water lovers.

The most popular spot on Torch Lake is located at its southern end. The best spot on Torch Lake is the Torch Lake sandbar, which can only be accessed by boat. Here, the water’s of Torch Lake hover between six feet and six inches deep, making it the perfect spot for swimming! Nearby public access can be found on the Torch River, or at various other spots on the Chain of Lakes.

Be especially careful on Torch Lake! Unsurprisingly, the area is as popular as it is beautiful. When paddling and swimming on the lake, lookout for careless boat drivers. If you are in a motorized boat, watch for swimmers with extra care.

While Torch Lake itself is a dream to swim in, did you know Torch Lake is just one in a chain of beautiful lakes? Elk Lake is also a beautiful spot to visit and get away from the crowds, and Lake Skegemog has beautiful wildlife. Torch Lake is just a few miles away from the Lake Michigan shoreline, and Barnes Park Campground is a perfect place to pitch a tent.

When you’re visiting Torch, be sure to check out town of Bellaire, Michigan. Bellaire’s Short’s Brewing Company is my favorite brewery in the state! Nearby, you can go for a peaceful paddle on the crystal clear Grass River. The Bellaire area is also home to great hiking, skiing, and mountain biking . Between tropical water and beautiful trails, the Torch Lake area is a must see Great Lakes destination.

Check out the ultimate all-season guide to Bellaire, Michigan!

5) the pictured rocks.

Ever dream of colorful cliffs and clear water? While Lake Michigan has soft sand dunes, Lake Superior has rugged cliffs, long hiking trails, and remote sea kayaking routes.

The Pictured Rocks are a bucket list item for any traveller. This national lakeshore has both family friendly hiking trails and more difficult treks. Near the lakeshore, you can find massive sandstone cliffs with waterfalls into the lake. Hike through the forest for more waterfalls and wildflowers, or take a swim in ice cold Lake Superior.

From Bayfield, head over to Madeline Island for adventures in cliff jumping. Drive out to the Lakeshore Trail on the mainland during a bad weather day to experience the full power of Lake Superior.

Visit Lost Creek Falls in Cornucopia for a nearby, family friendly hike. Overall, Bayfield is a perfect Great Lakes summer vacation spot for people of all ages.

9) the apostle islands wilderness.

Just outside of Bayfield, you can find one of the most overlooked wilderness areas in the Midwest. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is home to 21 wilderness islands in Lake Superior!

A trip through the Apostle Islands will take you far from mainland and out into the heart of Lake Superior. Explore sea caves, beaches, crystal clear water, and observe wildlife. In my opinion, Stockton Island is the best island in the Apostles. But you don’t have to take it from me! Start planning that overnight sea kayaking trip for yourself!

Image of the front of a sea kayak and one sea kayaker on Lake Superior under the cliffs at the Apostle Islands Sea Caves

The Apostle Islands are not a beginner level sea kayaking trip! All paddling in the Apostle Islands requires safety equipment, knowledge of Lake Superior weather patterns, and sea kayaking experience. Read kayaking safety on Lake Superior here . To book a guided day sea kayaking trip or an overnight adventure in the Apostle Islands, visit Lost Creek Adventures .

Especially beautiful in August, the Apostle Islands Wilderness is a bucket list Great Lakes destination. If you’re wondering where to travel in the Great Lakes Region for maximum adventure and solitude, head to the Apostle Islands.

10) two harbors, minnesota.

On the Minnesota side of Lake Superior, Two Harbors is a great spot to basecamp on the North Shore. Visit the iconic Castle Danger Brewery and watch the Great Lakes ships come and go from the Two Harbors Lighthouse.

After your time in town, head north along Highway 61 towards Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.

Image of part of Gooseberry Falls Waterfall with a rainbow in the waterfall mist

Gooseberry Falls is one of the best ADA-accessible places to experience the North Shore of Minnesota. In addition to some of the most family friendly hiking trails, Gooseberry Falls State Park also has some of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Minnesota.

While Gooseberry has waterfalls, Split Rock Lighthouse is just slightly farther north and has incredible views of the rugged Lake Superior Shoreline. Split Rock is the perfect place for a picnic on your way farther north!

11) tettegouche state park.

Another incredible spot along the North Shore is Tettegouche State Park with massive cliffs and waterfalls! Tettegouche is one of the most popular North Shore photography locations and for good reason. There are four different waterfalls in Tettegouche State Park, and multiple incredible overlooks.

Palisade Head at Tettegouche State Park on the North Shore of Minnesota

Although the park is busy, you can still find solitude on some of the more difficult trails and Superior Hiking Trail Spurs. My favorite spot in Tettegouche State Park is Palisade Head (pictured above).

12) Grand Marais, Minnesota

Are you searching for the best harbor town in the Great Lakes? Look no further than the sleepy coastal small town of Grand Marais. Between Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters, Grand Marais is one of the best Great Lakes summer vacation spots.

While in Grand Marais, spend your day hiking some of the great trails in the area, out on one of the many local lakes, or just exploring town!

A photographer stands in sea smoke at Artist's Point, MN

While most people only visit Grand Marias in the summer, this town is a perfect all season getaway. With cross country skiing and frozen waterfalls in the winter, leaf peeping in the fall, waterfalls in spring, and an idyllic summer, it doesn’t get much better than Grand Marais.

Read about the best winter adventures in Grand Marais!

13) the gunflint trail.

After leaving Grand Marais, take a trip up the Gunflint Trail into the heart of the Boundary Waters. The Gunflint Trail is a road that winds past inland lakes deep into the Boundary Waters Wilderness.

Hiking the Border Route Trail; Watatp Cliffs on the BRT

While most people head into the BWCA to canoe, there’s more to do than paddle! Hike one of the many trails along the Gunflint Trail, fish some of the inland lakes, or watch a lakeside sunset.

The Gunflint Trail and BWCA are connected to Lake Superior both in watershed and culturally. The Anishinabee/Ojibwe people once guided French fur traders through the Boundary Waters, along the Lakes and then out to Lake Superior. Eventually, this journey led to Montreal.

Although today the BWCA and Lake Superior are mostly seen for their recreational value, these areas still have cultural and ancestral ties to the Anishinabee People.

Hike the best hiking trails along the Gunflint Trail

14) grand portage, minnesota.

Located on the land of the Grand Portage band of Anishbabee/Ojibwe, Grand Portage is a beautiful place to learn about the history and culture of Lake Superior. Visit Grand Portage National Monument , one of the only US National Parks run by an Indigenous Tribe (Grand Portage Ojibwe) and the park service together.

Grand Portage has beautiful hiking trails, the largest waterfall in Minnesota, incredible views of Lake Superior, and the incredibly unique and valuable Grand Portage National Monument.

15) Isle Royale National Park

Perhaps the single best Great Lakes travel destination, Isle Royale National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the Great Lakes. Here, you can see wolves, moose, foxes, eagles, and more.

Isle Royale is an isolated National Park 18 miles from the nearest mainland. The island can only be reached by boat or plane, and is home to some of the best backpacking trails in the Midwest.

Highlight: Boating opportunities like pontoon cruising, kayaking, and sailboat races

Lake Muskegon is a top lake to visit in Michigan especially if you have an interest in working several types of lake experiences into your visit. The lake is located in western Michigan near the town of Muskegon .

The lake is popular for boating, water skiing, kayaking, and pontoon boating. There are often sailboat races and regattas that take place on Lake Muskegon in the summer. There are beaches for swimming and easy access points for kayaking. Fishing is another popular activity on the lake.

If you are staying on Lake Muskegon for vacation, plan a day trip to take the Lake Express ferry to Milwaukee , where you can enjoy other water activities in Wisconsin.

The best time to visit the lakes in Michigan for swimming and recreation is in the summer months of June, July, August, and September. These are your best months for warm beach weather, access to recreational rentals that are open for things like kayaks, attractions and amenities that are fully open, and ferries that are running to the islands.

Average temperatures during these months range from 76 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with the sweet spot being mid-June through mid-August when you have the warmest air and water temperatures.

July is the hottest, muggiest, and wettest month on Lake Michigan, which has many of the state's most popular beaches, so you might have to consider some indoor backup plans if you go during the height of the summer season.

If you are visiting Michigan's lakes for the scenery more than the swimming and recreation, then visiting between mid-September and mid-October will not disappoint. The weather cools significantly by the end of September into the mid-60s when the fall foliage begins to peak, starting in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Discovering The Great Lakes: Which One Should You Visit?

Lake Superiors sand dune shore

The Great Lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Ontario and Erie – are the largest group of freshwater lakes on the planet, holding over 20 percent of the Earth’s fresh water along the northern borders of the US and Canada . The lakes encompass 95,160 square miles, formed thousands of years ago after the last Ice Age left behind large bodies of meltwater and glacial landforms. Sometimes called the ‘inland seas,’ the Great Lakes are known for their ocean-like characteristics – strong winds and currents, rolling waves, and distant horizons – and are home to remarkable national parks, wildlife preserves, pristine waters, beautiful beaches, and countless outdoorsy activities.

If you like the great outdoors: lake superior.

The largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior offers 7,340 square miles of pristine natural beauty. Its ideal juxtaposition on the northeast corner of Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin provide lake goers with access to many national forests – including Superior National Forest, Ottawa National Forest, Hiawatha National Forest, and Sault Ste. Marie State Forest Area – with several just a short drive away. The surrounding awe-inspiring landscape makes for the perfect camping trip: expect forested woods, waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, fishing, and vast wilderness. Isle Royale National Park offers kayaking and diving (alongside 450 other islands to explore) and is a wildflower paradise filled with blooming buds, while the sea caves at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the ultimate kayaker’s dream. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore should not be missed, with its steep, multicolored cliffs and massive rock arches towering over clear and peaceful waters.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie: Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is an adventure sports haven. From shipwreck diving, fishing, and boating to wind and lake surfing, kiteboarding, parasailing, flyboarding, and kayaking, this lake has no shortage of things to do. And if you catch yourself here in the colder months, thrill-seekers can test their skills at ice luging, ice climbing, ice diving, snow kiting, or ice sailing. There are over 30 state and local parks located on the shores of the lake, and on its many islands as well as many beautiful beaches. If you’re a history buff: Lake Ontario

As an outlet to the Pacific Ocean through the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario has played a key part in American history for centuries. Originally inhabited by Natives, including the Huron and Iroquois tribes, the lake – discovered by Europeans in the early 1600s – was established as a primary hub for trading. Many towns blossomed on its shores as people settled close to the water, and several of these communities are still there today. Rochester is filled with historic neighborhoods and buildings – such as Corn Hill, one of the nation’s best preserved Victorian neighborhoods, and the Susan B. Anthony House – while Oswego provides curious travelers with a detailed history of the 15th-century village at many of its history museums. Cape Vincent is always worth the stop, founded by French explorers and missionaries in the 17th century, before departing to the world-famous Thousand Islands.

If you want a little bit of everything: Lake Erie

Lake Erie may be the smallest, but it is mighty. Along the lake’s 100-mile shore, find historic resort towns, lighthouses, and Victorian homes alongside many beautiful beaches. Adventure enthusiasts can revel in the many recreational activities – from biking, fishing, and golfing to canoeing, camping, and horseback riding – while lovers of the outdoors can get their fair share of natural beauty at the many islands and parks, including Presque Isla State Park, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, and Maumee Bay State Park. Learn about the rich waterfront heritage at the Erie Maritime Museum, or catch a theater performance at the Warner Theater. There’s even wine tasting plus a whole host of breweries . Should you need some downtime, visitors can take advantage of the abundant wildlife by bird-watching, or take in the scenery with a drive down the Great Lakes Seaway Trail. On Kelleys Island , former glaciers have carved long grooves in bedrock, a sight that should not be missed.

8 Great Lake Michigan Beach Towns

Come for the sand and surf. Stay for the charms of these eight Lake Michigan towns, filled with art, food, shopping and history.

Kelly Roberson has more than 30 years' experience in journalism and marketing. She lives in Des Moines and works as a senior writer and content strategist for Principal Financial Group.

True to the name, Dutch culture anchors this community with must-see lakefronts at Holland State Park and Tunnel Park. The DeZwaan Windmill, moved here from the Netherlands, anchors Windmill Island Gardens and still grinds winter wheat and corn. At Nelis' Dutch Village , stroll 10 acres of Dutch-inspired canals and gardens (and brush up on some klompen dancing skills, too). Take home wooden shoes from DeKlomp Wooden Shoe and Delft Factory. Blocks of brick buildings downtown hold independent shops, galleries, eateries and brewpubs.

Best Bet Explore two more customs—turning wooden bowls and woodworking with reclaimed materials—at the Holland Bowl Mill and Cento Anni.

Clinch Park sits across the street from downtown's rich lineup of shops and restaurants and offers multiple beaches, kayak and paddleboard rentals, a movie theater, snacks, and more. For an easy float, have an outfitter drop you at Boardman River south of town to paddle through Traverse City and onto Lake Michigan.

Best Bet: The Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails crisscross 60 miles of the area, including a trail through town. Bike rentals are easy to find downtown.

3. South Haven

The classic starting points for a visit here are the Michigan Maritime Museum and 1810 replica Friends Good Will tall ship. The museum includes five buildings with exhibits on all things seafaring, including shipwrecks. Guests can visit the ship dockside or sign up for a cruise. 4. Grand Haven

Stretching 1½ miles along Grand River, the Grand Haven Boardwalk is home to shops, restaurants and water-based pursuits. From there, you can scout out a spot to rest on the beach at Grand Haven State Park, or continue your adventure onto the 1,151-foot pier for a closeup view of two lighthouses.

Check out the masses of flowers, birds and trees at Galien River County Park from a 300-foot canopy walkway that includes a 60-foot-high overlook tower. Later, relax at area wineries or distilleries. 12 Best Lake Michigan Beaches With White Sand, Rolling Dunes, and Stunning Views

These sandy shores in the Midwest are perfect for a summer getaway.

best great lake to visit in michigan

With more than 1,600 miles of shoreline touching the states of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, Lake Michigan is home to many beautiful sandy beaches. The region has been nicknamed the "Third Coast" of the United States after the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Several islands and connecting rivers add to its beauty.

Water temperatures are chilly, especially in the northern area, and rarely top 73 degrees, even in summer. Lake Michigan's western and northern beaches are rocky, while its southern and eastern beaches offer some of the largest lake dunes in the world due to prevailing winds from the west.

Many Lake Michigan beaches are located in national, state, and county parks with excellent facilities for visitors. Beach towns, lakefront resorts, cabins, campgrounds, historic inns, and hotels provide a wide variety of places to stay. We've rounded up a dozen of the best Lake Michigan beaches, some of which welcome your furry companions.

Oval Beach, Saugatuck, Michigan

Oval Beach is the main beach in Saugatuck, one of the best small towns for a getaway in Michigan . Visitors can enjoy restaurants, theater, and shopping after a day on the sand. Set along the southeast shore of Lake Michigan near the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area and Kalamazoo River, the beach offers clean white sand, rolling dunes, and natural beauty. Restrooms, concession stands, parking, and a picnic area are available. There's a strict no-dogs, no-alcohol policy, and visitors should be aware that the parking lot fills early on summer weekends.

Ludington State Park, Ludington, Michigan

Located midway along Lake Michigan's eastern shore, Ludington boasts 28 miles of sandy beaches. Some of the best strands sit within the 5,300-acre Ludington State Park between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan. The park offers beaches on both lakes, as well as ponds, sand dunes, marshland, forest, and the historic Big Sable Point Lighthouse . While you're in Ludington, check out the city's largest beach, Stearns Park , which has free parking and Wi-Fi as well as wheelchair-accessible walkways from the parking lot to the water. Nearby, Buttersville Park is a dog-friendly beach featuring campgrounds, a picnic area, a playground, restrooms, and a pavilion.

Indiana Dunes National Park, Porter, Indiana

Indiana Dunes National Park offers 15 miles of beaches and an ideal setting for swimming, birding, kite flying, hiking, and exploring. Located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, the park includes nearly a dozen beaches with parking lots. Most of the beaches are open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and offer restrooms and drinking water. At West Beach , there are showers and lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Leashed pets are permitted year-round except at the West Beach swimming area during the summer season.

North Avenue Beach, Chicago, Illinois

North Avenue Beach is one of Chicago's most popular beaches thanks to its golden sand and stunning views of the city and Lake Michigan. Its unique white-and-blue beach house, resembling a sleek ocean liner, features a restaurant, ice cream cafe, restrooms, and rental facilities for bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards, Jet Skis, beach chairs, umbrellas, and more. Swimming is permitted only during the beach season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) when lifeguards are on duty from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in designated areas. Dogs, alcohol, and smoking are not permitted. There are plenty of things to do in Chicago after a day at the beach, including visiting museums, dining at restaurants, or catching a Cubs game at Wrigley Field.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan

Spanning more than 70,000 acres, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the best places to visit in Michigan , according to locals. This 35-mile-long stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline boasts the largest freshwater dune system in the world. The park has at least seven beaches, including Platte Point Beach , where the Platte River flows into Lake Michigan and the waters merge. Beach fires are permitted only on mainland Lake Michigan beaches between the water's edge and the first dune. Leashed pets are permitted on certain beaches, but some are closed in spring and summer to protect the nesting areas of the Great Lakes piping plovers, a protected endangered bird species.

Silver Lake State Park, Mears, Michigan

The 3,000-acre Silver Lake State Park features nearly three miles of shoreline and about 2,000 acres of dunes, forests, hiking trails, and campgrounds. It also has a popular 450-acre off-road vehicle area, the only one of its kind east of the Mississippi River. Four-wheel ATVs and other vehicle rentals are available from several local companies, and from mid-May through October, Mac Wood's Dune Rides offers a 40-minute dune tour in a dedicated section of the park. The pristine lakefront beach features soft sand and calm waters for swimming and wading. Boat launches and fishing are available at several of the park's beaches. The 1874 Little Sable Point Lighthouse hosts summer concerts, and visitors can climb the tower for stunning views of the forest, dunes, and lake.

Petoskey State Park, Petoskey, Michigan

Situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Michigan in the Little Traverse Bay area, Petoskey State Park offers a mile-long sandy beach, hiking trails, picnic facilities, volleyball courts, and a playground. Kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes are available to rent, and during summer, concessions sell ice cream, camping items, and souvenirs. A favorite activity at the beach is searching for Petoskey stones , the state stone of Michigan. They are actually fossils of an ancient form of coral, and the stones are prized for their beauty and unique markings that show best after the stone is hand polished. Leashed pets are welcome in the park, but are not permitted along the lakeshore in an effort to protect the habitat of the endangered piping plovers. Two historic Inns, The Terrace Inn and Stafford's Bay View Inn , are reminders of the area's history. Be sure to stop by the taproom at Petoskey Brewing Company , housed in a building dating back to 1898.

North Beach, Racine, Wisconsin

On Lake Michigan's western shore, just north of downtown Racine, North Beach features 50 acres of soft sand with a playground, volleyball courts, and a snack bar. There's live music, lifeguards, and free parking from mid-June through Labor Day. A wheelchair mat extends to the shoreline so everyone can enjoy the beach. North Beach is open year-round from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. During the swimming season (June through August), lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Pets aren't permitted on the beach. Wind Point Lighthouse is open for tours and Racine boasts historic architecture, farmers markets, boutiques, and restaurants.

Warren Dunes State Park, Sawyer, Michigan

The beautiful Warren Dunes State Park protects three miles of Lake Michigan's southeastern shoreline. The park's 1,500 acres also include forests, hiking trails, campsites, cabins, and massive sand dunes. Visitors enjoy climbing the dunes and gliding down them on sand boards, as well as swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Equipment rentals and food concessions are available during the season from mid-May through Labor Day. Hang gliding from the dunes, with approved permits, is another popular activity. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park's campgrounds, trails, and boardwalk, plus a pet-friendly section of the beach. Three walkways between the sidewalk and the shore provide wheelchair access, and beach wheelchairs are available from the ranger station. Paved roads and boardwalks in the campground also offer wheelchair access. The park is open year-round, and each season boasts natural beauty, wildlife, and things to do.

Holland State Park, Holland, Michigan

Holland State Park on Lake Michigan's eastern shore features two white-sand beaches, campgrounds, a playground, concessions, and equipment rentals. At Tunnel Park , a concrete tunnel cuts through a sand dune to provide access to Lake Michigan for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. The park offers beach volleyball, barbecue grills, restrooms, and a children's playground with a dune climb and stairway. Dogs are permitted in some areas in keeping with the park's guidelines . At Kirk Park, there's a sandy beach along Lake Michigan with high bluffs, dunes, hiking trails, restrooms, a horseshoe pit, a deck, picnic tables, and grills. There's an off-leash dog beach accessible year-round using the south beach stairs. Michigan's most photographed lighthouse, Big Red Lighthouse , has a history dating back to 1870 and is best viewed from a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk in the park.

Silver Beach County Park, St. Joseph, Michigan

Silver Beach County Park sits at the mouth of the St. Joseph River on Lake Michigan's southeast shore. It features a clean, wide, sandy beach, modern restrooms, outdoor showers, a playground, picnic tables, volleyball courts, and seasonal concessions. Lifeguards are on duty from early June to mid-August, and the swimming season typically runs from July to September. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk, and there's a daily parking fee. Leashed pets are permitted on sidewalks, but they're not allowed on the beach. During summer, beach wheelchairs are available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis, and kayaks and paddleboards can be rented at the south end of the park. South Pier is popular for fishing as well as beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the North Pier Lighthouse . Nearby, visitors can enjoy St. Joseph's restaurants, boutiques, and wineries.

Rosewood Beach, Highland Park, Illinois

The only swimmable beach in Highland Park, Rosewood Beach is a community gem. A major renovation project completed in 2015 restored the shoreline and created a boardwalk, park, nature trail, restrooms, concession stand, and a stunning glass interpretive center. Nature-focused programming, volleyball courts, and equipment rentals are available. Public swimming runs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily, conditions permitting. Dogs are not allowed on Rosewood Beach, but nearby Moraine Park is dog-friendly and includes picnic areas, a sculpture garden, and walking trails to the beach.

12 Amazing Michigan Beach Towns on Lake Michigan

Known for its picturesque Great Lakes shoreline, Michigan offers a variety of charming beach towns along Lake Michigan. Each town has unique attractions and ambiance, making them worth a visit.

Whether you are searching for a quiet getaway with lakefront views or you are interested in experiencing a lively and vibrant city, you’ll find a Lake Michigan beach town that suits your style.

Cherry Festival-Traverse City

Traverse City

Known for its beautiful beaches, vineyards, and a vibrant downtown area, Traverse City is a great spot for both relaxation and adventure.

Traverse City is a world-class destination, perfectly mixing culture and history with the relaxed beachfront vibes that everyone loves. It has earned global recognition for being one of the best places to visit in Michigan and is easily the state’s most popular city on the Lake Michigan shoreline.

In truth, Traverse City isn’t right on the waters of Lake Michigan — it rests along the shores of the quiet and protected Grand Traverse Bay. As a result, its beaches are calm and comfortable, making them incredibly popular among families who want to spend a day on the water.

Clinch Park

Clinch Park is a favorite among both locals and visitors, largely because it is located in the heart of the downtown area. With a concession stand, restrooms, showers, and changing areas — as well as vast stretches of soft, white sand — this park is one of the best places to swim and play in Traverse City.

National Cherry Festival

As the Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City is proud to host the National Cherry Festival in late June and early July each summer. The week-long festival features entertainment, carnival rides, parades, and endless handmade cherry items. It’s perfectly timed with peak cherry season, so you can expect ripe, sweet varieties throughout the entire event.

Some other activities and attractions that you might enjoy in Traverse City include:

  • A boat ride on the Tall Ship Manitou
  • Winery tours on the Old Mission Peninsula
  • Tour the Mission Point Lighthouse
  • Shop at the local stores on Front Street

Downtown Saugatuck

Famous for its artsy vibe, Saugatuck has beautiful beaches, dunes, and a quaint downtown full of galleries and unique shops.

On the west side of the state, you will find that Saugatuck is not your average beach town. In this city, sophistication and elegance reign supreme, adding a touch of grandeur to your Michigan beach vacation .

While it may feel like a cosmopolitan community, it’s still one of the most welcoming places to visit — with families, couples, and solo travelers all discovering an experience that leaves them with lasting memories.

Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency

Saugatuck has earned the nickname of Michigan’s Art Coast, largely thanks to the Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency, which is located in the city and helped establish it as an art community.

Not surprisingly, many of the artists who studied and trained at Ox-Bow set up shop in town, and now visitors can spend hours perusing the endless art galleries in Saugatuck. Some of the most well-known galleries in Saugatuck and nearby Douglas (across Kalamazoo Lake) include:

  • Water Street Gallery
  • Roan & Black
  • Button Gallery

While it would be easy to spend your entire visit to Saugatuck inside the immersive and enlightening galleries, you’d be remiss if you didn’t take time to explore the great outdoors. The city’s lakeshore is defined by white, billowing sand dunes, with many travelers finding themselves at Oval Beach .

Nationally ranked as one of the best beaches in the country, Oval Beach is easily the most popular and well-known beach in town — it’s a hotbed of activity during the sunshine-filled summer season.

Grand Haven State Park Camping

Grand Haven

Known for its stunning state park beach and iconic lighthouse, Grand Haven also hosts the annual Coast Guard Festival.

Grand Haven — which is not as big or as busy as Traverse City yet still offers visitors so much to see and do — is a quintessential Michigan beach town. The city’s downtown is always bursting with life, thanks to the many local restaurants and boutiques, but it’s the beaches that truly stand out in this community.

11 Beautiful Small Towns on Lake Michigan For a Coastal Getaway

Posted by Brittany Varano September 10, 2022 Updated June 30, 2023

Lake Michigan is aptly nicknamed ‘America’s Third Coast’ and is a relaxing coastal getaway lined with charming beach towns begging to be explored.

As one of the world’s largest lakes, Lake Michigan is so vast and wide that you can almost be fooled into thinking it’s the ocean. And with more than 1,600 miles of coastline that spans four states, water-based activities like boating, fishing and swimming are all the rage on Lake Michigan.

While you’ve undoubtedly heard of Chicago and Milwaukee, Lake Michigan’s largest cities, sometimes getting out of the concrete jungle is much needed to disconnect. Thankfully, there are many charming beach towns that offer quaint escapes you can’t experience anywhere else. And it’s in these vibrant small towns where you can soak up the beauty of the Great Lake while escaping big city crowds and supporting local establishments.

From Michigan to Wisconsin and everywhere in between, here are some of the best small towns on Lake Michigan.

1. Saugatuck, Michigan

Nestled along Lake Michigan’s southern shores is the artsy and welcoming small town of Saugatuck. This LGBTQ+-friendly coastal destination attracts sunshine seekers every summer itching to experience the beauty of Saugatuck Dunes State Park and the gentle waves of Oval Beach .

Outside of sandy pursuits, this charming little getaway boasts a thriving art gallery scene and sprawling vineyards. Stopping by Fenn Valley Vineyards  to sample Michigan-made wine is a must for connoisseurs. Climbing Mount Baldhead for unobstructed views of the lake is another iconic thing to do in Saugatuck.

Port Washington’s idyllic Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve is a lovely place to spend an afternoon. The preserve features boardwalk trails, wildflowers that bloom in the spring and summer, and cliffside views of Lake Michigan’s blue waters. When your tummy starts to grumble, head over to Twisted Willow , an all-American restaurant serving farm-fresh dishes, or the Schooner Pub for seafood and lake views.

  • 6 Most Idyllic Small Towns In Michigan

Michigan , the Wolverine State , is a treasure trove of natural wonders, like the first on the list, Beaver Island, with its own abounding landmarks to discover on this Michigan Lake's largest island. Find your own place of idyll, from the Sunrise Coast in Tawas City to the Art Coast in Saugatuck, flaunting six pristine beaches. Wildly adventurous from one side, the Great Lakes State offers beautiful views for scenic relaxation to make everlasting memories away from the big cities.

Catering to every modern traveler away from the hustle of the city, Tawas City is the social butterfly on Lake Huron, with waterfront dining and resorts for every budget along the shoreline. New Buffalo, the southern terminus of the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, is the portal to the Great Lakes State near the Indiana border. Pentwater and Saugatuck, the through-and-through Lake Michigan "homies," flaunt an inland lake each for double the waterfront views along the trails and sugary beaches.

Beaver Island

White Shoal Lighthouse near Beaver Island, Michigan.

Beaver Island, aka America's Emerald Isle, offers a relaxed, peaceful escape for every nature lover. This largest island in Lake Michigan features a large expanse of wilderness with access by plane or sail to the St. James shore. Home to around 500 people—many Irish descendants—Beaver Island Historical Society is a great place to start discovering, with the view of the beautiful Beaver Island Harbor Light across the waters at the tip of the island's "hook." Largely natural, Beaver Island's unique shape is fun to explore on a bike ride for the active, with rentals available in town, including cars. The other side of the island flaunts another, the Beaver Head Lighthouse or, locally, the Whisky Point Lighthouse.

From Font Lake to Mt. Pisgah, outdoor adventures abound for summertime visitors, while the trails conveniently meander around notable sites like Prorar's Tomb, Angeline's Bluff Lookout, and the Big Rock. Quaint and steeped in history, Camp Wagner Campground rests shoreside on the east flank, popular among the outdoorsy, but even the top-rated Beaver Island Retreat sits spoiled within nature for a romantic escape or a memorable family stay. Dive headfirst into the natural underwater surroundings at the Beaver Island Marine Museum and don't miss the Toy Museum with something eye-catching for every age, while Whisky Point Brewing Company offers to decompress, or just stick around after dinner for drinks at the Shamrock Bar & Restaurant.

Marquette, Michigan on the shores of Lake Superio

Home to around 22,000 people, this larger, small town is a shining star of the state, in between the sparkling lakefront and the ultimate winter playground on the other side. Drawing scores of tourists, Marquette bursts with life along the Upper Peninsula without ever feeling overcrowded, where everyone can find a slice of seclusion along the immense Lake Superior's shore—the world's largest single freshwater body—to enjoy the views in close company on a sunny summer day. Alternatively, Noquemanon North Trails Trailhead is a jet set through luscious views for a refreshing hike, and don't miss a sunset stroll to the Marquette Ore Dock.

Whether you're in for the meandering hikes in the foothills or skiing the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain when the flakes fly, the waterfront at Presque Isle Park features gardens, bandshells, lookouts, and cliff diving from the Black Rocks. The college town, home to Northern Michigan University, abounds in cultural entertainment, shopping, and dining, like the Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbour Brewery. From the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum to the Marquette Maritime Museum, there's something for everyone to discover the secrets behind the Great Lakes , including the Marquette Harbour Lighthouse against sunset views!

New Buffalo

New Buffalo, Michigan

Just across the state line with Indiana , New Buffalo is a fun road trip stop, holding a promise of many rewards for those who make it to this southwest corner in Michigan, the "port of entry" to the Great Lakes State. Featuring a charming downtown, the Harbour Grand Hotel welcomes wearisome travelers with a spa, a delicious restaurant, and the next morning's breakfast in bed. Offering beautiful harbor views from sunrise to sunset, the nearby beaches feel idyllic without crowds to relax, soak in the sun rays, and enjoy the close company. From the Four Winds Casino to the up-and-coming food scene, New Buffalo, just 70 miles from Chicago, sure knows how to make lasting impressions!

Part of the upscale southwestern shore towns of Harbor Country, it inspires the feel of "the Hamptons of the Midwest," humbled by the stunning Lake Michigan views, and welcomes visitors to share the one-of-a-kind atmosphere, including the southern terminus for the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail. Imbibe the local culture at some of the nearby wineries, while New Buffalo Sailing Excursions and Third Coast Paddling can get even the meekest on friendly terms with the waters. The massive public beach is great for beachcombing, and the stunning Galien River County Park features marshy wetlands and cozy boardwalk hikes.

Street scene in Pentwater, Michigan

Boasting two lakefronts—the immense Lake Michigan and its own pretty Pentwater Lake—this Main Street villa feels idyllic within nature's embrace. Its quaintness is old-fashioned, like a getaway right from childhood to which you can introduce your own kids. Steeped in history and laidback vibes, Pentwater is ideal to explore on a stroll or bike, and there is no better start than a ride around its 500-acre lake, perhaps after a bite at the Brown Bear. Home to genuine locals happy to host visitors, the town on Michigan’s west coast flaunts a stunning historic lighthouse, while the Hexagon House Bed and Breakfast is a cozy stay keeping with the retro theme.

Lake Michigan’s clear waters and sugar-fine sandy beaches are seductive for a summertime escape if relaxing is the goal of your visit. Just north of the cute Pentwater South Pierhead, Mears State Park sprawls as the main beach with amenities, doubling up as an RV park to explore the trails when not lounging on the expansive sands in the lake's fresh breath. A vibrant river feeds the smaller inland lake, while rows of small businesses downtown hold curiosities for every taste and interest. After browsing an eclectic mix of shops, like Sew Lets Be Quilty and Cosmic Candy Company, why not grab a snack to go for a picnic at the Village Green, a center park with tons of fun events?

Aerial view of Saugatuck, Michigan

Sneaking up on every beach lover's list in the state, Saugatuck , an Art Coast town, truly offers something for any traveler's taste. While being tiny, it is an annual summer tradition to hit up on Lake Michigan, flaunting six sandy beaches and many town greens. From ice cream stands for a stroll to South Pierhead for a selfie to the Saugatuck Dunes Rides through the Saugatuck Dunes State Park sprawling just to the north, it all inspires a summertime love affair for the outdoorsy.
