Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor in Maine are a perfect East Coast vacation spot. The national park is spread over most of Mount Desert Island (reached by a short bridge from the mainland), the Schoodic Peninsula, and the tiny Isle au Haut.  

The park’s wooded hills are perfect for hiking , and Acadia has a wide range of trails, from easy (the Ocean Path with a stop off at Thunder Hole is a highlight) to very challenging (including the park’s most famous trail, the Beehive).

A fun choice is the walk out to Bar Island, which you can only reach at low tide by crossing along an exposed sand bar. 

However, there is much more to do. There are miles of historic carriage roads that are ideal for walking and cycling. Or take a dip in the very chilly Atlantic at the beautiful Sand Beach or the less chilly and equally beautiful Echo Lake.  

There are also plenty of ways to get out on the water in summer. There are kayak trips that let you explore the pink granite coastline in more detail; boat trips that will take you past lighthouses and more distant islands ; and sailing trips with champagne that are the perfect way to see the sunset. 

The gateway town of Bar Harbor is also fun to explore. It’s a quintessential New England town with a storied history and is filled with great restaurants and places to stay.

A highlight is The Reading Room Restaurant , which offers fine dining with amazing ocean views. It’s located in the Bar Harbor Inn , which is also a wonderful place to stay. You can also plan to camp in Acadia National Park or book a vacation rental nearby.

Sutton, New Hampshire

Sutton, New Hampshire, is a great summer family vacation spot on the East Coast , couples will also find it to be filled with romantic things to do, especially outdoors lovers.

You’ll find many state parks and lakes nearby that are perfect for hiking, biking, swimming, and kayaking or boating. There, you shouldn’t miss Kezar Lake, Wadleigh State Park, Gile Pond, and Shadow Hill State Forest.

You should rent kayaks and head out to Loon Island where you can hike through the surrounding forest.

If you like hiking, walk all or part of the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway , a 75-mile hiking loop that can be started at Wadleigh State Park heading to Winslow State Park, then down to Rollins State Park and over to Mount Sunapee State Park before heading back to Wadleigh. You can also bike along that trail.

In town, visit Bayberry Barn Christmas Shop because Christmas there is also a summer thing.

For a place to stay, you can rent a cottage in town or in the nearby woods for something more secluded. If you’d rather stay at a hotel, the well-rated Follansbee Inn , located right on Lake Kezar, will be a perfect pick.

Boston, Massachusetts, is nicknamed “The Cradle of Liberty.” And certainly, there is no better city to understand the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence than visiting this historic city.

Summer is an ideal time to visit New England because you won’t need snow boots or parkas. The roses bloom profusely in the James P. Kelleher Rose Garden. But the first stop for any history buff in the Boston Commons is to buy a ticket for the Freedom Trail tour .

The 2.5-mile red brick sidewalk is where History happened. Boston was the epicenter of the American revolutionaries’ fight with the British Crown. The major stops include the Boston Common (America’s oldest public park), the Massachusetts State House , the Park Street House (church), the Old Corner Book Store , the Old South Meeting House , and the Old State House.

And if you like to communicate with the dead, you’ll delight in visiting the Granary Burying Grounds . Highlights include Paul Revere’s tomb . Built in 1660, the cemetery is the final resting home of America’s most famous Revolutionary heroes.

If you are a fan of Boston Cream Pie or the Parker Ross, book a room at the Omni Parker House . You can also easily find a vacation rental near the city’s top sights.

And no visit is complete without an Italian meal in the North End , which is Boston’s Little Italy.

Siasconset is a must-visit to explore some of the oldest cottages on the island and have a tasty lunch at the enchanting Sconset Cafe . Take the picturesque Sconset Bluff Walk to see the sunset at Sankatay Head Lighthouse before taking the bus or driving back Downtown.

There you will find all of Nantucket’s museums like the Nantucket Whaling Museum, the Museum of African American History, and the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum.

If you do not drive, a great way to explore the island is by bike . There are plenty of bike rentals on Nantucket and the bike trails take you all around the island which makes it a safe biking destination.

The Nantucket Periwinkle is an ideal place to stay for couples and families alike. This charming inn is conveniently located near the beach and the downtown area and breakfast is included.

There is a national airport on Nantucket island, but you can also easily take the ferry from Hyannis, New Bedford, or Cape Cod.

Block Island, Rhode Island

From pristine beaches to great restaurants , you’ll fall in love with this relaxed east coast gem off the coast of Rhode Island, and want to stay for your whole summer vacation. 

Fly into Providence, Rhode Island, and head to Pt. Judith to take the 30-minute Block Island high-speed ferry. If you are planning to take a car with you, there is a 1-hour traditional ferry. A car is not necessary as you can easily rent a bike or moped to get around .

First up is a visit to Crescent beach , one of the most popular sandy beaches on the island. Close by, the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge is a protected coastal wetland where you can take a picturesque walk to the iconic North Lighthouse.

In the middle of the island, the Great Salt Pond is a popular spot for sailing, kayaking, and fishing . Have lunch with a Great Salt Pond view along with a famous Mudslide at The Oar . It’s one of the island’s most popular eateries.

Finally, don’t miss the stunning Mohegan Bluffs on the south side of the island that sit almost 200 feet above the water. You can take a tour of the Southeast Lighthouse , the highest lighthouse on the East Coast with amazing views. On a clear day, you can see Montauk, New York.

If you decide to stay overnight, the Block Island Beach House has cute decor and a swimming pool that’s sure to keep everyone happy. You’ll also find plenty of vacation rentals on the island.

New York City, New York

New York City is one of the best summer destinations on the East Coast. This staggering City is full of life at night and is touted as the city that never sleeps; from dawn to sunset, New York City has something for everyone to stay busy and entertained at all times.

When flying to New York, the best airport to arrive at is JFK, and then hop on the LIRR train or an airport shuttle to get to New York City.

A great place to stay that is relatively close to Time Square and Central Park is The Time New York Hotel ; this hotel has spacious rooms, is near a variety of food joints, and is situated nearby a metro station, so transportation is more accessible. 

If you love sightseeing, New York City is home to some of the USA’s most significant landmarks and monuments. Take a ferry across Manhattan to Liberty Island to witness the french gifted Statue of Liberty, tours typically run from 8:30 am- 6 pm most days, and it will cost around $24 for adults, $12 for children aged 4-12, children under four are granted free admission, and seniors get a discounted rate at $18.

Another note-worthy activity during the summer is strolling through Central Park ; this massive park is over 840 acres. Things to do at Central Park include listening to music performances, taking a bike tour of the park, having a picnic, renting a boat and rowing across a 20-acre lake, and other activities.

Finally, when you have had your fair share of outdoor activities, make your way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located near the park. This famous museum is where the Met Gala is held, but more importantly, features historical artifacts from various time periods worldwide. When planning a trip to the museum, make sure to reserve tickets beforehand as it’s a tourist hotspot. 

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

While Gettysburg is a beautiful destination year-round, the summer months are the absolute best. Pennsylvania has hot summers but not overly so, so getting outside to wander is no problem.

The biggest draws to Gettysburg are historical in nature, as the town was the city of the Battle of Gettysburg, the largest battle and turning point of the Civil War. History buff or no, don’t pass up the chance to visit the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and drive at least part of the battlefield.

You can see places like Little Roundtop that you likely learned about in your US history classes as a child. Other significant and interesting historical sites are the Shriver House Museum, the Farnsworth House (said to be one of the most haunted places in the US), and the Jennie Wade House , home of the only civilian who died in the battle.

If history isn’t your thing, don’t worry! Gettysburg is beautiful beyond the battlefield as well. There are many hikes in the areas , as well as fruit farms where you can pick your own berries, apples, and more , and there’s quite a big craft beverage scene . (The Mason Dixon Distillery is fantastic!)

To get to Gettysburg, you’ll want to fly into either Harrisburg, PA, or Baltimore, MD, and rent a car. There is no public transport in the area so a car is a must.

Stay at the historic Inn at Lincoln Square for something centrally located that’s not haunted (or so they say). You’ll also find a couple of nice houses available as vacation rentals.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Rehoboth Beach is a perfect beach vacation destination on the East Coast . Featuring plenty of fun water activities and entertainment options , you’re sure to have a blast while on a vacation there. Relax on the beach, go for a swim, sample some local food, and take the time to unwind.

When you’re feeling adventurous, go on a guided kayak excursion or learn windsurfing . You can also go for a hike at Gordon’s Bond Recreation Area , or walk through marshes and ponds at the Thompson Island Trail.

In the evening stroll through Rehoboth Beach’s boardwalk , known for its many restaurants, shops, hotels, and amusements. There are also many free concerts during summer and kids will enjoy playing arcades at Funland.

The Jungle’s Jim Waterpark is great to visit if you’re traveling with kids. It’s the largest waterpark in Delaware and you’ll find several different areas and slides for kids and teens.

To explore the area a bit further you can take a day trip to Cape May , known for its Victorian houses such as the Emlen Physick Estate that you can tour.

If you have the time and want to explore the coast further, you can plan a fun summer road trip, starting in Rehoboth Beach and ending in Virginia Beach , stopping by Bethany Beach, Ocean City, Chincoteague Island and Assateague Island National Seashores, Cape Charles, and then Virginia Beach.

You’ll find plenty of nice and affordable vacation rentals near the beach . Or if you prefer a hotel, the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel is right by the beach and offers family rooms, a restaurant, and free parking. For something more budget-friendly that’s still near the beach and city center, check out the High Seas Motel.

Williamsburg, Virginia

The Historic Triangle is one of the most fascinating places on the east coast. The triangle, located on the Virginia Peninsula, is made up of the towns of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg. These three colonial communities all played a significant role in US history.

Jamestown was the first English settlement, Yorktown is where the American Revolution ended, and Williamsburg is often referred to as the place the nation was born. 

Colonial Williamsburg is home to the world’s largest open-air museum . The historic area of the town, including dozens of preserved buildings , is a living history lesson, where historical interpreters dressed in colonial costumes remain in character and interact with guests.

You can tour the original colonial governor’s palace , watch live reenactments of historical events , and see how trades workers made silver pieces, shoes, wigs, and furnishings. It is one of the most fun and educational experiences in Williamsburg for kids as well as adults.

Aside from the fascinating history in the area, Williamsburg is home to Busch Gardens Theme Park and Water Country USA , both of which are popular East Coast attractions during the summer months.

Davis, West Virginia

If you love outdoor adventures then Davis, WV should be on your bucket list for summer destinations on the East Coast . Hiking, whitewater rafting, and mountain biking are just a few of the fun things to do in Davis .

Davis is actually the highest incorporated town in the state of West Virginia so the weather is much cooler than in surrounding areas.

People come here from all over to hike and backpack in the Dolly Sods Wilderness area because of the mild weather and stunning views.

Don’t miss the most photographed waterfall in West Virginia – Blackwater Falls – at Blackwater Falls State Park . There are lots of great hiking opportunities here too.

Go whitewater rafting on the Cheat River with Blackwater Outdoor Adventures or mountain bike in Canaan Valley State Park.

The town of Davis is small but there are many great restaurants, cute shops, and a brewery called Stumptown Ales.

Davis and the surrounding Canaan Valley are pretty remote so cell phone service is spotty. Make sure to bring a paper map with you to navigate!

The nearest major airport is Dulles International (Washington D.C.) and it’s two hours and 40 minutes away. A car is definitely needed to get here and get around once you’ve arrived.

There are some really unique places to stay in the area – you won’t find any chain hotels here. The Bright Morning Inn in town is a great bed & breakfast or there are cabins at Blackwater Falls State Park if you’re okay with roughing it a bit. You’ll also find plenty of cabins for rent if you want something a bit more secluded.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina, really comes alive during the summer with great weather, a vibrant city, and lots of outdoor opportunities.

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway and admire the gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Check out a few of the hikes along the parkway like Devil’s Courthouse, Craggy Gardens, or Crabtree Falls.

The French Broad River is also popular for kayaking, SUP, or tubing and you can even go whitewater rafting on some sections.

The Biltmore House is popular in all seasons but summer is a great time to visit their gardens, go hiking on the grounds, and make a visit to their winery. Definitely should be on your list even if you’re just spending a weekend in Asheville .

Asheville is known to be a foodie city and has been named Beer City USA for multiple years in the past. You’ll find lots of art galleries and boutique shops downtown to walk through and don’t miss White Duck Taco or Chestnut for great meals.

There is no shortage of breweries but Bhramari, Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, and New Belgium are favorites. Many of them have outdoor spaces so summer is the perfect time to get out and enjoy those.

This is a very dog-friendly city so if you have a furry friend you like to bring along then this is a great place to do that.

The Asheville Regional Airport is just outside of town in Fletcher, NC. You’ll want a car if you plan on hiking or driving the parkway. If you plan on sticking to downtown then a car isn’t necessary.

The Aloft Asheville Downtown is a great hotel option at a reasonable price and it’s within walking distance of many popular restaurants, breweries, and other points of interest. You’ll also find plenty of great vacation rentals in the downtown area.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks is one of the best East Coast summer destinations for anyone looking to spend some time outdoors. Made up of over 200 barrier islands alongside the Atlantic Ocean, from the calm waters of Corolla Beach to Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills Beach, you’ll find plenty of places to visit.

Don’t miss the Wright Brothers National Memorial where the first flight took place, the area’s many lighthouses, and the quaint towns full of history.

For something fun, visit Jockey’s Ridge State Park where you can slide down the super tall sand dunes. Head to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge or take a 4×4 tour in Corolla , for a chance to spot wild horses, or kayak through the mangrove in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge .

The Outer Banks is filled with beaches, state parks, wildlife refuges, and quaint towns , so you’re sure to find plenty of places to visit whether you want to relax or go on an adventure. The best would be to plan a summer road trip from Virginia Beach to Ocracoke Island.

You’ll find plenty of beach cottages along the shore as well as hotels, inns, and beach resorts for all budgets.

Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina

If you’re looking for a relaxing destination with beautiful beaches, Hunting Island State Park is a great East Coast summer destination to consider. It has a beautiful lighthouse, great hiking trails, and pristine beaches.

While exploring Hunting Island, be sure to visit the Hunting Island State Park Lighthouse. It is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that is open to the public. Anyone over 44” tall can climb to the top of the lighthouse during operating hours. The views from the top are stunning.

Another highlight of the park is the Hunting Island lagoon . It is a really fun place to enjoy paddleboarding or kayaking . This is also a great place to look for seabirds and other wildlife.

The closest airport to Hunting Island State Park is the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport (SAV). It is 90 minutes south of the park. Another great option is the Charleston International Airport (CHS). The airport is about two hours north of Hunting Island.

There is a campground in the state park which is just steps away from the beach . This is a great campground to stay at if you have camping gear or an RV. Staying on the island is the best way to experience all of the fun things to do there.

There is also one cabin for rent in the state park next to the lighthouse. The cabin does book out well in advance so it will take some planning if you want to stay there.

There are not any hotels in Hunting Island State Park. The closest hotels are on Fripp Island or Harbor Island. Beaufort, South Carolina is also a short drive if you want a bigger city. If you’re looking for oceanfront lodging, take a look at the Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort.

You’ll also find plenty of vacation rentals on both sides of the island.

Charleston, South Carolina

Filled with Southern charm, history, entertainment, and great food, Charleston is an ideal summer destination for families and couples alike. From enjoying the beach and hiking to summer festivals and events, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do during your vacation there!

Summer is the best season to spend some time at the beach, take a day trip to Folly Beach, Edisto Island, Sullivan’s Island, or Isle of Palms . There you can go on a dolphin-watching boat cruise, try stand-up paddle, or go kayaking.

Take a day trip to Kiawah Island  where you can enjoy 30 miles of biking and hiking trails and 10 miles of beach, as well as stunning scenery. The Francis Marion Forest is also a must-see if you like spending time outdoors.

In town take a walking tour of the historic district , visiting centuries-old buildings, strolling through parks, and learning more about the city’s history. If you like to get spooked, take a ghost tour instead – while foodies can go on a food tour.

Don’t miss the farmers market at Marion Square in downtown Charleston where you can buy some fresh produce and sample some local food (every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m during summer). And make sure to visit a plantation or two – Boone Hall Plantation and Magnolia Plantation are among the most popular in the area.

You can book a vacation rental near the historic district or in Folly Beach if you want to be near the beach. If you’d rather stay at a hotel, Zero George Street probably is the most famous inn in town and you’ll be in for a treat if you decide to stay there.

Cloudland Canyon State Park, Georgia

You can find one of the best summer destinations on the East Coast at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Rising Fawn, Georgia. With 3,538 total acres to explore and over 64 miles of hiking trails , it’s one of the largest parks in Georgia.

During summer , the canyon is full of lush greenery, making it one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit. The best attractions to see in the entire park, however, are the waterfalls that lie hidden at the bottom of the canyon.

There are two that you will visit on the Waterfalls Trail . The first one is especially unique because of the turquoise blue pool that forms at the bottom of the 60-foot falls.

For the bluest water, try to visit when it has not rained recently. The gemstone water can sometimes turn a murky brown during the days following a storm because the waterfall’s increased volume and strength will stir up sediment from the canyon floor.

Also, be prepared to climb hundreds of steps. This is a strenuous hike but is well worth the effort!

Cloudland Canyon has fully furnished cottages for rent within the park, and this is the best place to stay during your visit. Your kitchen will be fully-furnished, so you can choose to cook your own meals if you like. If those are booked, check out the vacation rentals in Rising Fawn .

If you’d rather dine out, there are several restaurants just a quick drive away . The Canyon Grill serves a variety of American cuisine, including pasta and salads, and it’s a local favorite in Rising Fawn.

From major US cities located nearby, Cloudland Canyon is easy to reach by car. From Atlanta, it’s just a two-hour drive north along Interstate 75. From Chattanooga, it’s just a 30-minute drive southwest on Interstate 24 West and then Interstate 59 South. 

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Historic houses, a driftwood beach, and Gilded Age decadence: Jekyll Island, Georgia, has a bit of everything, making it one of the best East Coast summer destinations!

The island is a perfect place to visit in summer thanks to its wide beaches and water park , but that’s not all. It might be small, but you’ll be spoiled for choice on what to do on Jekyll Island !

Bask in the summer sunshine as you cruise along the island’s bike paths , and then stop for some ice cream in the historic district. The tram tours through the historic district are a great way to get off of your feet for a bit while soaking in the island’s history. 

Next, look for sea glass at Jekyll Island’s secluded driftwood beach.  

If you get too hot, take a break inside at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center where you’ll learn about conservation efforts underway to protect these incredible marine animals. 

End the day with a dip in your hotel’s pool and dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants. 

Jekyll Island feels remote, but it’s less than 30 minutes from the closest interstate (I-95). You’ll need a car to get to the island as the nearest major airport is in Jacksonville, about 2 hours south by the interstate.

Once you’re on the island, settle into your hotel before heading into your first activities. If you love history, you’ll want to stay at the original Jekyll Island Club Resort , which was once the winter home of elite families like the Vanderbilts, Carnegies, and Astors. 

If you’d prefer to be on the ocean side of the island, opt for the Ocean Club , which shares amenities, dining reservations, and pool access with the Jekyll Island Club Resort.  

Tybee Island, Georgia

Tybee Island in Georgia will make an awesome East Coast beach vacation spot for families, couples, and friends alike . With plenty of things to do during summer, you’re sure to have a blast.

Located next to Savannah , Tybee Island features many g orgeous beaches, historic buildings, and plenty of entertainment options . Don’t miss the Fort Pulaski National Monument and the lighthouse.

When you’re tired of the beach go on a kayak adventure, taking a tour to discover the surrounding coastal areas or the marshlands. Or, go on a cruise trying to spot dolphins or to watch the sunset.

If you like hiking, go for an easy stroll along the North Beach Birding Trail, the McQueen’s Trail, or the Sally Pearce Nature Trail. In summer, you might spot warblers, the Painted Bunting, and other vocal birds. You’ll also find plenty of biking trails on the island.

If you have more time, take a day trip to visit nearby Savannah , strolling around the historic district, visiting an art museum or two, and touring a plantation.

Orlando, Florida

One of the best summer destinations on the East Coast is Orlando, Florida. It is home to some of the best theme parks in the world and great outdoor recreational activities. There is a great downtown area with fun nightlife and other activities.

During the warm summer months, one of the best things to do in Orlando is to visit the natural springs in the area. There are lots of great springs within an hour of downtown Orlando. Wekiwa Springs State Park is about 25 minutes from downtown and is a great place to cool off during a hot day. You can also enjoy camping and hiking here.

There are lots of great water parks in Orlando, which feel especially refreshing during the summer. Universal’s Volcano Bay and CoCo Key Water Park are two of the best-rated waterparks in the area. These are great activities to enjoy time in the beautiful Florida sunshine.

A great area to enjoy downtown during the summer is Lake Eola . There is a beautiful walking path around the lake, and you can rent swan paddle boats . There is a great playground for kids , and it is the location of fun markets and festivals.

How much of New York can you see on just a quick weekend trip?

Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately!

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

• The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
• The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

• Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
• Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

• CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
• Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Where to Stay in Baltimore

• The Inn at Henderson’s Wharf : Housed in a warehouse-turned-charming-hotel, you can find the popular Inn at Henderson’s Wharf at the end of a delightful cobblestone street in Fells Point.
• Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore : Housed in the former B&O Railroad Headquarters, walking into the opulent lobby of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore feels like stepping back in time–and the rooms are incredibly comfortable, too

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

• Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
• StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

• The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
• Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

• Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
• The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

• The Jasmine House : This stunning boutique inn is housed in a Greek Revivalist home dating to 1843, and decorated to the nines! This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
• Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

• Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
• The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Curious about filming locations?

Atlanta–and Georgia overall–are hotspots for filming movies and TV shows ranging from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things.

Where to Stay in Atlanta

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Away from its iconic theme parks, though, there is still plenty to do in Central Florida!

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

Check out the Orlando Museum of Art or the Morse Museum of American Art during your East Coast city break!

The USA is packed with bucket list cities, parks and attractions but if you’re looking for the best of the west coast we have 25 favorite spots or the best of the east coast, keep reading!

1. Dry Tortugas National Park, Flordia: This national park off the coast of Florida is comprised of islands and features an abundance of marine and bird life!

2. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts : This little gem of an island is in the south of Massachusetts and has the cutest colonial style.

3. Baltimore, Maryland : This city is quirky, it’s adorable, it’s charming – that’s why they call it Charm City – and it’s well worth the stop.

4. Atlantic City, New Jersey : Known as the Las Vegas of the east, Atlantic City offers casinos, wide beaches, and boardwalks.

5. Savannah Historic District, Georgia:  Spanish moss trees adorn this district and make it appear otherworldly. (pictured below)

6. Watkins Glen State Park, New York : With gorgeous gorges and waterfalls, Watkins Glen State Park is quite the adventure.

I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

Yes it is one of my absolute favorite places, so gorgeous! 🙂

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

Once you've come out the other side in Lincoln, New Hampshire, you can continue on your way west and cross over into Vermont.

Set your sights next on Stowe, Vermont's most picturesque ski resort town , and the location of the Trapp Family Lodge , the historic home of the real von Trapp family that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein to write "The Sound of Music." If there's no snow on the ground, the area offers plenty of trails for biking and hiking, or you can enjoy a scenic gondola ride and the charming downtown area. You'll finish the trip when you arrive in the state capital of Burlington, a small city with a youthful personality as the home of the University of Vermont. You can stock up on farm-fresh groceries at the celebrated Saturday farmers market and go barhopping among the city's many craft breweries.

Boston, Massachusetts to Acadia National Park, Maine

There's no shortage of ways to explore Boston — self-guided walking tours, museum visits, and strolls through Little Italy (in the North End) and historic spots like Faneuil Hall and Boston Common are all great options for soaking in the city. Visitors can also take a harbor cruise or ride a seasonal Swan Boat in the Public Garden lagoon. Don't leave town without sampling the city's famous clam chowder and Boston cream pie.

The fastest route on this 285-mile trip takes nearly five hours and passes through Salem, Massachusetts; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Portland, Maine; and Augusta, Maine's capital, before reaching Bar Harbor. You'll experience New England's scenery and history if you take U.S. Route 1 with a few detours along the way.

Traveling north on U.S. Route 1 from Boston, you'll pass over the Mystic River. If time allows, watch for the Yankee Division Highway heading east toward Gloucester — a worthwhile detour if you're interested in seeing lighthouses, fishermen's memorial statues, and historic buildings. Back on the highway, you'll drive north, just a mile or so from the sea most of the time, briefly passing through New Hampshire until you reach Portsmouth and enter Maine. Continue through beach towns and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge , and take State Route 9 for a detour to Kennebunkport. Spend the night, dine on Maine lobster, and check out the stunning mansions in this nearly 400-year-old town.

Take Route 9 around the shore, then head back to U.S. Route 1 on Route 208. Continue on U.S. Route 1 to Portland, another great option for an overnight stay. From Portland, three hours on the shore-hugging scenic route will get you to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

New York, New York to Newport, Rhode Island

Spending a few days in Manhattan is the ideal lead-in to a relaxing road trip to a quieter town like Newport. After noshing on bagels or pizza, shopping, visiting museums, and strolling through Central Park, it could be time for a change. Don't leave without walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, meandering along The High Line , and experiencing The National September 11 Memorial Museum .

When it's time to leave, head north on Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR Drive) along the East River to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, which spans the Harlem River. Interstate 278 then takes you through the Bronx and onto Interstate 95 through Westchester County. The highway runs northeast, close to the shore of the Long Island Sound into Connecticut. You'll pass through New Haven, home of Yale University, and have an opportunity to explore the campus.

Shortly after the town of Guilford, exit onto State Route 1, which will take you closer to the sea and add about 30 minutes to the four-hour, 185-mile trip — but it's well worth it for the views and beach access. You'll join Interstate 95 again to get back on your way to Newport, eventually exiting onto State Route 102 and then Route 138.

In Newport, park your vehicle and spend a few car-free days along the shore, strolling the three-and-a-half-mile Cliff Walk , exploring vintage mansions, and enjoying fresh seafood. Take a bike ride along one of many trails or relax on a sunset cruise.

New York, New York to Washington, D.C.

This 226-mile trip takes approximately four hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From lower Manhattan, take the Holland Tunnel that passes under the Hudson River to New Jersey. You'll be on Interstate 78 in Jersey City, with views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty . The interstate highway crosses Newark Bay on the Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge, then meets Interstate 95 heading south.

Driving south on Interstate 95 (New Jersey Turnpike), Staten Island, one of New York City's boroughs, will be on your left across a narrow body of water called Arthur Kill — the word "kill" is derived from the Dutch, influential in settling this part of the northeast. Continue south on Interstate 95 through New Jersey — maybe taking a detour to the beaches of the Jersey Shore — until you cross the Delaware River into the state of Delaware. You'll soon enter Maryland, where Interstate 95 is named John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, cross the Susquehanna River, and go on to Baltimore.

Continue south on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295) into Washington, D.C., where there's plenty to see and do, from museums, memorials, and monuments to outdoor activities on the waterfront. The Smithsonian museums alone could fill several days, plus there's hiking, biking, and boating for those who want to spend some time outdoors.

Baltimore, Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia

Starting in Baltimore, this East Coast road trip will take you on a long detour from I-95 that passes through a rare coastal landscape populated by wild horses. From Baltimore, it's a 118-mile drive across the Chesapeake Bay to Delaware's Bethany Beach, a lovely first beach to set the tone for this coastal adventure. From here, travel south along the water until you reach Ocean City, Maryland, a classic American beach town to base your adventures in Assateague State Park. Open to beach campers, this 48,000-acre stretch of grass and sand is considered one of the country's most scenic camping destinations.

You'll find wild horses roaming the landscape on Assateague and further south on Virginia's Chincoteague Island, which is your next stop. There's no main road connecting the two islands (although there are many back-country campsites) so you will have to briefly go back inland to get to Chincoteague, where you'll find even more beautiful scenery, horses, and the famous Pony Swim , which takes place every summer. During the event, spectators can watch as the horses are herded across the bay by the "Saltwater Cowboys" in an impressive display of the animals' swimming chops.

From Chincoteague Island, it's a beautiful 105-mile drive with the Atlantic on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other. Make sure to stop for lunch in one of the small towns along the way for fresh seafood. When you reach the end of the island, you'll travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and arrive at your final destination in Virginia Beach, another classic American beach town, where you'll have your pick of chic hotels and a large boardwalk with plenty of restaurants and attractions for all ages.

Washington, D.C. to Nags Head, North Carolina

After taking in the sights, restaurants, and history of our nation's capital, you may be ready to head to the beach — this trip takes you about 280 miles south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina . As with most of these road trips, there's the faster way and the more scenic route. In this case, the scenic drive adds nearly an hour to the approximately five-and-a-half-hour trip, but if you're on vacation, it's worth the additional time.

Head south out of Washington, D.C. on Interstate 395 (which turns to Interstate 95). You'll pass the Thomas Jefferson Memorial , then cross the Potomac River into Virginia. Continue south until you reach State Route 3 around Fredericksburg — head east on Route 3, then south on Route 17. Called Tidewater Trail, Route 17 meanders along next to the Rappahannock River, a spot known for outdoor fun and delicious oysters.

You'll cross the York River and the James River, which empty into the Chesapeake Bay. In the city of Newport News, take Interstate 64 southeast, and in Chesapeake, take Route 168 into North Carolina. The highway meets up with Route 158, takes you along a narrow peninsula to the Wright Memorial Bridge, and south to the Outer Banks town of Nags Head. Relax on the beach, climb to the top of the still-active Bodie Island Lighthouse , or watch the hang gliders at Jockey's Ridge State Park among massive sand dunes.

Charlotte, North Carolina to Gatlinburg, Tennessee

For this scenic East Coast road trip, you'll travel to the heart of Appalachia, starting in Charlotte, North Carolina where you can pay a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame . From here, you'll head west to Asheville, another city with a lot of character and a unique history. Consider this your gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park . While in town, you should stop by The Biltmore Estate, the impressive mansion of the famously rich Vanderbilt family, and plan to spend sunset at the Omni Grove Park Inn , a historic hotel that once hosted American authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and also has the best sunset views in town.

From Asheville, get yourself to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a road that provides 469 miles to explore the poetic Appalachian Mountain landscape from the comfort of your car — with plenty of stopping points to enjoy a cozy cabin lodge or gentle hike. The road goes northwest through Virginia, but we recommend traveling southwest to finish in the Smoky Mountains and then crossing the national park until you reach Gatlinburg. For a trip this grand, why not plan a big finale and book a night in one of the region's luxury tree houses? The Sanctuary Tree House Resort in nearby Pigeon Forge is home to beautiful feats of architecture with real tree houses boasting trip-making amenities like outdoor hot tubs and swinging day beds.

Wilmington, North Carolina to Savannah, Georgia

Start or end this road trip by spending a few days in the riverfront city of Wilmington, strolling Cape Fear's 1.75-mile Riverwalk , browsing the shops, or dining at one of the waterfront cafes or restaurants. Tour the Battleship North Carolina , just across the river from downtown, to catch a glimpse of its role in World War II's Pacific Theater. Spend a day at the beach or ride in a horse-drawn carriage among Wilmington's historic mansions.

When it's time to begin your drive south to Savannah, you have a few options. The fastest route is inland on Interstate 95, a little less than five hours for 300 miles. But take your time and drive near the coast on U.S. Route 17. While this will add around an hour, you'll pass through small towns and be able to stop for lunch on a nearby beach. If time allows, you could happily take three days or more to enjoy this scenic and historic section of the coast.

Head west across the Cape Fear River, then U.S. Route 17 takes you inland for a few miles south before you get close to the Atlantic shore for most of the drive. You'll pass Shallotte, its river of the same name, and the Brunswick Islands , five barrier islands with beaches, seafood, and a historic atmosphere. North Carolina's Outer Banks region, which comprises 100 miles of shoreline, is a popular summer destination, and you might decide to spend some time (or even a night) in one of the beachside towns.

Myrtle Beach in South Carolina might be your next stop, or you can continue your scenic drive along the shore and spend the night in Charleston. Continue on U.S. Route 17, driving near the Sea Islands — hundreds of barrier islands along the shores of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida — for about two hours, before arriving in Savannah.

Savannah, Georgia to Orlando, Florida

It may not be easy to leave Savannah's squares, parks, riverfront, and restaurants, but if you're planning a visit to Orlando's theme parks and many attractions, it's time to get on the road. Most of the 300-mile trip will be on Interstate 95, which runs fairly close to the coast, but there's a short detour that takes you to Sea Island , Little St. Simons Island , and Jekyll Island that's well worth an extra hour or more.

Take Interstate 16 West out of Savannah to meet up with Interstate 95 South — you'll drive mostly inland, but pass over creeks and streams along the way. Shortly after the Altamaha River, watch for a turnoff onto State Route 99, then take Route 17 south. Take a road to whichever island you want to visit. Then, continue on Route 17, which meets up with Interstate 95 again. Continue south, passing Amelia Island, and on toward Jacksonville, where you'll cross the St. Johns River.

You'll drive near the coast as you pass St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city, and a variety of beach towns. At Daytona Beach, home of the Daytona International Speedway , head southwest on Interstate 4, passing Lake Monroe and on to Orlando, where hotels, Disney World, Epcot, Universal Studios, and entertainment of all kinds await. Explore the natural surroundings at Shingle Creek Regional Park , where you can paddle a canoe or kayak, or enjoy a quiet picnic.

Miami, Florida to Key West, Florida

This classic road trip takes you to the furthest reaches of Highway 1 and the southernmost point of the continental U.S. From Miami, it's a 164-mile drive to Key West, but it's a trip that should be broken up along the way to enjoy the diversity of the many islands that make up the Florida Keys — and maybe even a detour to Everglades National Park if you've always wanted to see gators in person. Before you set out, make sure you take the proper time to enjoy the scene of South Beach, have a cafecito on Calle Ocho in Little Havana, and take a few shots for the 'gram at Wynwood Walls .

From Miami, embrace the laid-back style of the Keys by traveling slowly, first stopping at Key Largo for a slice of Key Lime Pie at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen . As you roll down Highway 1 past Islamorada and Marathon, you'll see fabulous resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfasts but for an experience that's a little different, park the car and hop on a boat to the celebrated Little Palm Island , a private island resort where you can have your own luxury bungalow. You can spend the entire trip exploring the many wildlife-rich snorkeling and diving spots, especially if you take an excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park , a protected marine reserve.

For literature fans and animal lovers, a visit to the Hemingway Home and Museum is a must, where you can meet the unique six-toed cats descended from the great American author's precious pet Snowball who lived there with him in the 1930s. Of course, with only one way to go from Key West, the drive back is just as scenic as the drive there, so keep track of your favorite spots and make sure you never miss the sunset, which is magnificent from just about every angle.

The East Coast includes all the coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The East Coast region of the USA also includes Vermont, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia even though they do not have coastal access to the Atlantic.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Moscow or St. Petersburg – Which Russian City Is Better?

As two of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia, most travelers who visit the world’s largest countries end up making their way to both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both cities have a wealth of attractions, including palaces, churches as well as exciting culinary and nightlife scenes. But what if you find yourself able to visit only one – should you visit Moscow or St. Petersburg? Alternatively, if you have time for both, in which city do you spend more days?

During a recent trip to Russia, I had a similar problem deciding. My trip allowed me to visit both cities but I was not sure in the beginning whether I should stay for more days in Moscow or St. Petersburg. As such, the comparison I am going to do here applies both to those trying to allocate the number of days between the two cities as well as those who have enough time to visit only one,

As Russia’s capital, the city serves as the financial center of the country. The city is highly cosmopolitan. You will find a large number of people from all around Russia here and even people from the former Soviet republics. Moscow also has a noticeable expat population and you’ll find various types of eateries here from Japanese to French as well as Italian – the latter which local chefs do very well.

While the city sits firmly in Europe and plenty of the surrounding architecture are certainly typical of the continent, Moscow can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming (and clogged), not to mention polluted due to the smoke coming out of the cars. There are plenty of highways circling the city to reach areas outside the central core. Moscow is definitely one of the great cities of the world.

• Moscow is one of the world’s largest cities and you won’t get bored here. There are plenty of districts from which to explore. Personally, I love the area surrounding the Patriarshy Ponds filled with plenty of charming shops and hip restaurants.
• If you decide to spend more time or devote your entire time in Russia to Moscow, you’ll be pleased that there are plenty of day trip and excursion opportunities from here. The towns around the golden ring, i.e. Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, etc are either a car or train ride away and can easily keep you preoccupied for a couple of days.
• The city is not as touristy as St. Petersburg and that’s a good thing. I visited the Kolomenskoye Park for example, which houses a UNESCO World Heritage Site, without encountering the tour groups I typically see in St. Petersburg.
• If the hipster culture interests you, you’ll be pleased that you have plenty of options in Moscow. The most prominent is Flacon , a short walk from Dmitrovskaya station.

• Overall, I found Moscow to be more expensive – both in terms of hotels, food as well as transport. The Russian capital is frequently ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the world. All it takes is a visit to the iconic GUM shopping mall to see the astronomical prices.
• If you are visiting Moscow independently, you might find getting by via public transport a bit confusing. When taking the metro in particular, the signs are all in Cyrillic so it’s helpful to learn a bit of the alphabet in order to familiarize yourself with the names of the places. If any consolation, some of the stations are among the most beautiful subway stations in the world.
• While both Moscow and St. Petersburg have less charming Soviet style buildings, you’ll find more in Moscow – being once the capital of the Soviet Union.
• There are no shortage of sights in Moscow but many of them are scattered all around the city. Interesting places in the outskirts include: Kolomenskoye Park, the Izmailovo Kremlin, Novodevichy Convent and Flaocon. But these are at different directions from the center.

Where I stayed in Moscow: I found the InterContinental Tverskaya Moscow to be conveniently located. It’s within a short walk from at least 3 metro stations while the Red Square is just down the road. Service overall is fantastic compared to other Moscow hotels and vacation rental options and there are good deals to be had during weekends. St. Petersburg

Established some 300 years ago by Peter the Great, St. Petersburg probably ranks among the most visually appealing cities in Europe. Almost any building in the central core for example can be considered as a tourist attraction. The city is one of the great touristic cities in Europe – hosting plenty of daytrippers from cruises around the Baltics or Scandinavia.

• The city is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with plenty of classical and baroque architecture. Peter the Great spared no expense in hiring the best architects from Western Europe when he established the city.
• St. Petersburg is relatively cheaper than Moscow. Uber rides between most points within the city center don’t go beyond $5.
• Many of the tourist attractions are concentrated within the center so it’s fairly easy to walk from one attraction to another or take a short cab ride.
• The city derives a good part of its income in tourism and you’ll find plenty of signs in English and even in other foreign languages. While I was there, I saw many restaurants and shops displaying signs in Chinese.

• While you will find daytrip opportunities in the form of Petrograd as well as Catherine Palace, they’re significantly less than if you choose to base yourself in Moscow.
• St. Petersburg can get quite touristy and you could find the crowds a bit maddening and you might even need to queue for a long time to enter. It’s possible to purchase tickets for some attractions online but others are available only on the spot.

Where I stayed in St. Petersburg: I was pleasantly surprised by the Crowne Plaza Ligovsky . Some of the rooms are styled like a palace with engravings on the walls. Fresh juices were served during breakfast – something relatively unheard of for a 4 star hotel. Best of all, it is located just across Galeria, one of the biggest shopping malls in St. Petersburg. Where to go if you could choose only one city?

Both Moscow and St. Petersburg are great in their own ways. However, if your stay in Russia is very short and barring any other limitations, I would suggest going to St. Petersburg instead. My reasons are as follows: St. Petersburg is quicker to navigate. You can finish most of the main attractions within a couple of days by focusing on the city center and perhaps visiting the area north of the river. In contrast, Moscow is quite spread out. The city is so much more than the Kremlin and Red Square that it will take you more days to really see the city. It would be better to visit Moscow next time when you have more days to spare.

If you have enough time for both cities, where should you allocate more days?

On the other hand, if you have more time to visit both cities and are deciding where to allocate more days – I would suggest allocating more days for Moscow. Other than the extra time required to see the city outskirts, you could also use the extra days to arrange excursions to the cities in the Golden Ring. Also check out my suggested one week itinerary for Russia . Alternatively, you can also consider venturing to Russia’s third capital, the multicultural city of Kazan if you have time.

Tips for Russia

• Know the Cyrillic alphabet  – the local alphabet is not difficult and is actually quite fun to learn especially after you learn how many words sound the same in both Russian and English! This will help greatly when you navigate metro stations and read shop signs.
• Travel insurance – If you are going for a simple eating trip near your home country, travel insurance may not be needed but for Russia which is quite far and rather exotic, I decided to purchase one. I bought from  this provider which has a higher than average medical coverage and compensates you for things like accidents and lost items at a relatively cheap price.
• Buy metro cards – Getting the metro cards in cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg will save you lots when it comes to transport cost and is far more convenient than buying tickets on the spot. For places that are not covered by the metro, you can consider ride-sharing apps like UBER.

I have been to moscow and lived there for a while i only find out that in moscow people are so aggressive and not friendly at all. If you don’t kniw the Russian language then it means you would be in problems. People don’t like to help others. if you can’t find any address don’t ask any one they will not answer you.time is money for them they don’t waist time for you.

I will plan to visit both but spend a bit more time in Moscow (if I can afford the hotels!!).

What time of year were you in Russia? I would like to go during the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

Follow live updates on the solar eclipse

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

Below is a list of timings for some U.S. cities along the path of totality, according to NASA .

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
• Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
• Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
• Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
• Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
• Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.

For weeks, if not months, those who have seen one repeated to anyone who would listen: There’s nothing like experiencing the totality of a solar eclipse.

For some of them, this was a second time in six and a half years experiencing the eerie calm when the moon passes in front of the sun, at least for a few minutes. And yet, they were just as awestruck.

For others, it was a likely last opportunity to witness such a celestial phenomenon for two decades. It inspired gasps and smiles, solemnity and excitement.

Here is how it looked as the moon’s shadow crossed three countries and 13 U.S. states, with the time of totality in Eastern time.

2:10 — 2:14 p.m.

Uvalde, tex., 2:29 — 2:33 p.m., russellville, ark., 2:50 — 2:54 p.m., carbondale, ill., 2:59 — 3:03 p.m., bloomington, ind., 3:04 — 3:08 p.m., tiffin, ohio, 3:11 — 3:15 p.m., littleton, maine, 3:32 — 3:35 p.m..

A group of professors and students traveled from the United States to El Salto to conduct the most thorough experiment ever using an eclipse to test Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Einstein’s idea held that the massive sun would bend the light of surrounding stars more than previously estimated, proving that matter can pull and warp space and time.

The researchers used five telescopes to measure that effect more closely than ever, measuring stars that appear so close to the sun’s edge they can only be viewed during an eclipse.

After a countdown in Spanish, the sun darkened, and the data collection began. “TOTALITY,” yelled Sam Jeffe, a third-year physics major at Willamette University as it appeared in the telescopes’ lenses. “And it’s clear!”

Researchers will feed the data into the computer program, which will analyze the position of the stars and determine how the sun bent the light around them. But, for now, more than half the battle was done.

2:27 — 2:31 p.m.

On U.S. soil, totality first came into view in the border city of Eagle Pass, Tex., where a crowd gathered at a football field erupted into cheers as the skies darkened above them.

A singer crooned, “I’m walking on sunshine!” People put on protective glasses and craned their necks toward the sky. Many began to clap.

Vita Garza Flores, 76, traveled from Northern California to see the eclipse in the city where she was born. She brought her daughter and brother along with her.

She grabbed her eclipse glasses, positioning them across her sunglasses: “Wow!”

Students from Uvalde High School were also among the citizen scientists using the eclipse to learn more about the sun and its effects on Earth.

They joined Southwest Texas Junior College’s STEM club in participating in a program known as the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse. Called Citizen CATE, it will combine short videos of the eclipse taken via telescope into an hour-long movie that NASA says will detail magnetic structure within the sun’s corona and reveal its density. That will help scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind — charged particles that can disrupt electricity grids and produce auroras when they reach Earth.

In Russellville, NASA gathered scientists and broadcast the eclipse’s progress live online. Tourists gathered there, too, wearing T-shirts that declared, “I got mooned at the eclipse.”

A jazz band from Arkansas Tech University played. NASA hosted workshops and Q&A sessions with scientists, at least one of whom has been to space: Among the visitors were Mike Massimino, a veteran of NASA space flight missions to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.

Carbondale, Ill., earned the title of “eclipse crossroads of America,” having fallen in the path of totality for a 2017 solar eclipse as well as the event on Monday. This time, at least, the skies were clear for totality, and a full stadium of eclipse fans burst into collective screams when the moment came.

“This is so much better than 2017,” a one commentator on NASA’s live broadcast noted. “It’s so much darker than 2017.”

To many of those who experienced it, the eclipse was a spiritual event. In Bloomington, Buddhist monks marked it with a puja ceremony, a “ritual honoring and promoting inner and planetary healing,” according to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.

Eclipse watchers flocked to Yellowwood Lake where they could experience the eclipse in nature.

When the last pulses of the sun’s rays make their way to Earth before an eclipse enters totality, they appear like a brilliant diamond set on a golden ring. In Tiffin, that meant a chance for some “unforgettable” weddings at an event called “Elope at the Eclipse.”

3:18 — 3:21 p.m.

Niagara falls, n.y..

Crowds flocked to landmarks across the path of totality for a memorable view. At Niagara Falls, despite a thick blanket of clouds, people gathered on the banks of the Niagara River and trained their phone cameras toward the sky. Streetlights turned on, if only briefly, when darkness descended.

The moon’s shadow reached North America at the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico, just after 2:07 p.m. Eastern time. Just about 90 minutes later, it crossed the wilderness of northern Maine, on its way toward Canada, and then, the North Atlantic.

A total solar eclipse will next dim communities in the contiguous United States in 2044, but only in parts of Montana and the Dakotas. The country will have to wait one more year for the next coast-to-coast phenomenon, a total eclipse that will stretch from California to Florida on Aug. 12, 2045. It will be a Saturday.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
